IN REMEMBRANCE
We will never forget.

A nation remembers: Honoring Sept. 11, 24 years later
Today marks the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The attacks remain one of the most significant events in American history, reshaping the nation and its sense of security.
Across the country, people are pausing for moments of silence, gathering at memorials and reflecting on the courage and unity that followed the tragedy.
In New York, bells toll at Ground Zero to mark the times the Twin Towers were struck and later collapsed. In Washington, ceremonies take place at the Pentagon, while families gather at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Though the attacks
unfolded far from here, the impact was felt in every community. Local residents recall where they were that morning — the phone calls, the television images and the silence that followed.
For many, Sept. 11 remains a day of mourning and gratitude for the first responders and ordinary people who acted with extraordinary bravery. As the nation remembers, the anniversary also serves as a reminder of resilience. Out of tragedy came stories of firefighters climbing stairwells, strangers helping strangers and communities banding together. The promise to “never forget” endures, not only in ceremonies today but in the ways Americans continue to honor unity and compassion.

Warnerview Skilled Nursing Facility Earns
Prestigious Five Star CMS Rating
Modoc Medical Center is proud to announce that Warnerview Skilled Nursing Facility has been awarded a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest possible rating a nursing facility can attain.
The CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System is a nationally recognized benchmark designed to help patients, families, and caregivers compare nursing facilities with ease. A five-star rating reflects excellence across three key performance areas: health inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures of care. Facilities that earn this distinction
consistently demonstrate superior performance, dedication to patient safety, and a commitment to highquality, compassionate care.
“This recognition is a direct result of the tireless efforts of our staff,” said Ed Johnson, Chief Nursing Officer at Modoc Medical Center. “A five-star rating doesn’t happen overnight— it requires attention to detail, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to putting our residents first in everything we do. I could not be prouder of our team for their passion in providing the very best care to our community.”
Achieving and
maintaining a five-star status requires:
• Rigorous compliance with state and federal health inspections.
• Strong staffing ratios that ensure residents receive timely and personalized care.
• Outstanding performance on clinical quality measures, including resident health outcomes, rehabilitation success, and overall quality of life.
Warnerview’s recognition highlights the skilled nursing facility’s role as a cornerstone of care in Modoc County, ensuring residents and their families can expect a standard of care that prioritizes patient

safety and dignity above all else. For more information about Warnerview Skilled Nursing Facility and its services, or MMC’s

Obituaries

Gerta Anna Elzea was born in San Luis Obispo, CA on May 3rd, 1933. She was 2 years older than her sister, Glenda, and lived with her mother, Avalyn Jacobson, her grandmother, Anna Schlicht, and her uncle, Harvey Schlicht. The world looked a lot different in 1933 than it does now. Gerta was surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and many friends. Her family was very close and they were all proud to be Danish. Danish customs and traditions were part of their community and everyday life. In fact, her grandmother owned a little restaurant called The Wooden Shoe in San Luis Obispo.
The world was in turmoil, and as the U.S. entered into WWII in 1941, lives changed significantly. Many friends, husbands, and sons went to war. Gerta’s mother, a single mother, went to work at Camp San Luis Obispo in the laundry. Her uncle, Harvey, went to work driving a truck at Camp San Luis Obispo. Food was rationed and windows were covered with paper so no lights would show since they were on the coast of California. At one point in time, Gerta recalled her uncle, Harvey, taking them to get school clothes and they came home with boots, because that’s what was available. Through all of this, Gerta’s family remained strong as they did their part for the war efforts. Even though times were tough, Gerta never remembered those times as being difficult. But, what she did talk about was her family and the picnics, the clamming, eating abalone, going to the ranch on the Carrizo Plains, holiday celebrations, dancing and singing, and
learning to cook, sew, and crochet with her mother and grandmother. She was taught to look on the positive side of things and proceeded to do her best to instill this within her own family.
During this time, Gerta’s patriotism blossomed. She learned to love all of the patriotic music, the marches and bands. She developed a deep sense of pride for her country which she carried to her death. She never heard a rendition of “God Bless America”, “The StarSpangled Banner”, or “Stars and Stripes Forever” that she didn’t cry. She stood when her flag passed by and was always the first to say “Thank you” to a veteran. During her elementary and high school years, she played the saxophone in the band. When she was finally old enough, she took great delight in being in the marching band and being part of the marches which she cherished so much. When no longer able to march herself, she did her best to watch every Rose Bowl parade she could.
In 1948, Gerta’s mother married Elmer B. Harper from Adin, CA at which time Avalyn, Gerta, and Glenda moved to the Harper Ranch in Round Valley, just outside of Adin. Gerta loved being a “ranch girl” and she and her sister became Buster’s girls. They were as thrilled to have him as he was to have them. Upon moving to Adin, Gerta started her Junior Year at Adin High School and graduated in 1950. While in High School, she met Junior Elzea who became the love of her life.
During her schooling years she showed an interest in administration and secretarial work. She later went on to work at the high school as a secretary and later went on to be the District Secretary for the Big Valley Joint Unified School District.
In 1952 she and Junior married and moved onto the ranch in the little house next to Elmer and Avalyn. The house consisted of a little tiny bedroom, a little tiny kitchen, a little tiny living room, and an outhouse. This is the house they lived in when they welcomed their first child, Marsha, into their lives in 1953. They welcomed their second child, Sheral, in 1955. During this time, Gerta was a homemaker and helped with duties around the ranch, while Junior harvested wheat, drove logging truck, and helped with the ranch as well. Gerta also contributed to her family by making fruit pies daily that were
sold at the Red Caboose Café in Adin. And, boy did her family benefit from her love for pies and baking ever since! Especially during the early years of her young family, there was always a pot of coffee on the stove and some sort of baked good ready to share with Edna, Betty, Alice, or any other stranger or friend that may show up to visit.
She truly carried on the traditions of her childhood with baking, sewing, and Celebrations. In 1958, Elmer had knee surgery due to injuries he had previously sustained. At that time, there was no knee replacement surgery and he ended up having his knee fused, causing a stiff leg. He was unable to continue working the ranch and in 1962 the ranch was sold.
Both Avalyn and Elmer and Gerta and Junior moved into new homes that had been built on a little section of property from the original ranch in Round Valley. Junior and Gerta’s house was a moderate home.
When they moved into the house, Gerta said her legs hurt from walking because the new house was so much larger than the previous house. In 1964, Junior and Gerta decided that their family was not complete and Chris was added to the family. This did not stop her from being a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, teaching Sunday School and running the children’s church program at Adin Community Church, helping at Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir, babysitting in trade for piano lessons for Marsha and Sheral, being a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, running the concession stand at Little League, a member of the Rebecca’s Club, keeping in touch with her family in San Louis Obispo, running kids here and there, baking desserts for bake sales, and hosting and entertaining family that came to visit from afar.
She worked as the secretary for the Soil Conservation, she worked at Chases market, and eventually returned to Big Valley School District as the District Secretary.
Gerta never wanted to miss a thing and took great joy in attending the grandchildren’s events. It never mattered how late an event may end, she was going to be there with bells on. Sometimes she and Junior were the biggest ducks in the puddle and would often shut the family gatherings down (sometimes not until 2 or 3 am). Despite having several ailments, Junior
and Gerta never let that stop them from going and doing. She dedicated several years of her life to caring for others. She was a caretaker extraordinaire. When Junior passed away, Gerta did not let this get her down and kept on living. She went right back to being involved in many community events and gathering with friends to play Nickles, even when requiring a chauffer herself. In fact, she was honored as one of the Grand Marshalls in the 150 th celebration of Adin in 2019.
Gerta was actually very healthy until the last 3 months of her life. Her mind was sharp until the end and we often found ourselves going to her when we couldn’t remember something. Gerta went home to be with Jesus on August 19, 2025 at the age of 92.
Gerta is survived by her daughters, Marsha (Jeff), Sheral (Thor), son Chris (Lisha) Grandchildren: Jena (John), Erin (Todd), Brandon (Mattea), Vance (Katie), Christjan Great Grandchildren: Jeremiah (Summer), Jocelyn (Noah), Tanner, Braedyn, Dean, Evan, Jonah, Tayte, Mikaylee, Kysen, Avalyn Great-Great Grandchildren: Elias, Wyatt, Gabriel, Eleanor, Emiliana She is also survived by extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many many friends.

Daniel proudly served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Private E-2, and was honorably discharged on August 12, 1976. Following his service, he worked as a self-employed master

Daniel loved anything involving his grandchildren including crafting halloween scenes. On July 24, 1996, Daniel married the love of his life, Karrie Yvette Bendsen, in Alturas, California. The two shared nearly three decades together until her passing on March 14, 2024.

Clarence Lee McCarty
Clarence Lee McCarty died of a heart attack August 27, 2025. He was born August 17, 1955 in Rushville, Indiana, the youngest of four children, growing up on the farm and hanging out at his mother’s restaurant. The family moved to Watsonville, California. Clarence preached his first sermon and met his future wife at the Church of God in Watsonville at age 13. Clarence McCarty and Kathleen Downs eloped August 17, 1973.
He worked in Watsonville, growing carnations for 10 years. After a time in Nevada, he and Kathy moved in 1986 to minister at the Alderpoint Assembly of God. There, two children joined them: Cameron McCarty & Kimberly McCarty.
Clarence became pastor of the Indian Valley Assembly of God in Stonyford CA, and he also helped the community.
September 2006, Clarence brought his family to Alturas, California, to become Senior Pastor of Christian Life Assembly.
Clarence was available at the church and beyond. Some of his community service included fostering unity through the Alturas Ministerial Association, being a Chaplain to the Sheriff’s Department, and praying at the Modoc County Board of Supervisors meetings.
He cooked for the Rotary Club Fish Derby, competed in chili cook-offs, and created huge Thanksgiving Day events. He also instigated a tradition called the AllSing hosted by alternating churches on 5th Sundays.
Clarence and Kathy visited residents at Warner View [skilled nursing
facility], spending time with individuals, leading Bible studies, or leading a Sunday service with songs. Clarence would go home with great joy, especially when the residents sang and clapped along.
While traveling around, he responded to people in need.
Cameron McCarty would say Daddy is “doing his thing.”
Clarence was sensitive and said in a sermon that he wanted to kiss everybody’s booboos.
That’s too much for one man, so he prayed, and sometimes he used tough love.
Clarence often stopped to pray for people. He called that POTS – Pray On The Spot. He also offered to pray a blessing over new businesses. That habit echoed what one of his ball caps stated: C. I. A., Christians In Action.
Around 2008, Kathy McCarty started the Loaves and Fishes benevolence project, which Clarence expanded to include other churches. Alturas Baptist Church will now oversee that ministry.
Someone said that he was like a father, making one want to behave better.
Another said that Clarence had zero tolerance for dishonesty. Some have said
that he really liked to help people. And many have said that he was a good, honest man.
Being available to almost anyone needing a baby dedication, baptism, wedding, funeral, or visit in the hospital has endeared Clarence to the community.
The McCarty family liked watching good movies together, which often happened as they volunteered at the Niles Theatre. He might have sold you tickets at the box office.
Fishing was Clarence’s favorite hobby. He especially enjoyed fishing when Father Bernadine kept him company. Clarence started playing guitar when he was 13 and grew into leading worship.
Even though health issues made it difficult, he led the usual Sunday song serviceand a Warner View Sunday service - 3 days before his death.
Clarence and Kathy shared a life verse: Philippians 1:6. His story continues as a legacy that reaches far beyond his lifetime.
Preceding him in death are: his parents, Fred Perry McCarty and Marie Gleneth McCarty [ne Passmore]; sister Dolores Wright, Kadluboski [ne McCarty] of Missouri, and her daughter
Gleneth “Glennie” [ne Wright/McCarty, adopted by grandparents] of Missouri; sister Betty Hauff [ne McCarty], her husband, Charles Hauff, and their son, Charlie Hauff; brother Fred Junior McCarty; sisterin-law, Susan Reeder [ne Downs], and her daughter Michele.
Surviving him are: wife Kathy McCarty and son Cameron McCarty both of Alturas CA; Kimberly Ramirez [ne McCarty] and her husband Manuel Ramirez of Sacramento, CA. Nephew Carl [Wright] McCarty [adopted by grandparents] of Olivehurst CA; niece Debbie Parks [ne Hauff], and nephew Robert Hauff, plus nieces Lena and Betty; and Fred Junior McCarty’s children: Kenny, Richard, Jerry, Sherry, Clarence, and Evelyn “BB”. Also: sister-in-law, Betty,
& her Husband, Bobby Brewer, of Hollister CA and their children Stacey, Amy, and Bobby Jr.; sisterin-law, Wanda, and her husband, William Duncan, of Jackson, Oklahoma, and their daughters Tiffany, Destiny, and Sierra. Plus more nephews and nieces, and grand-nephews and grand-nieces. Apologies to those not listed.

More Conversations, Better Outcomes: 5 Tips To Help Prioritize Mental Health While In College
By Dr. Nicole Brady, Chief Medical Officer, UnitedHealthcare Student Resources
College is often seen as the ultimate proving ground for independence – you’re setting your own schedule, managing classes, navigating new relationships and adapting to a new environment. For many, it can also be the first time living away from home. These many new experiences may lead to stress, anxiety, even depression. Dealing with mental health challenges on your own may only be unrealistic, it may be harmful.
Findings from UnitedHealthcare’s College Student and Graduate Behavioral Health Report revealed that nearly twothirds of college students self-reported experiencing mental or behavioral health concerns. And while the overall incidence of concerns is down over the past three years, rates of serious issues like eating disorders, suicidal ideation and intent, and substance abuse disorder remain consistent.
Remember, you don’t have to go through any of this on your own. The same report found that more frequent conversations with both parents and peers about mental health are associated with positive outcomes. So, while independence is an important part of the
college journey, prioritizing your mental health should never be something you do alone.
Here are five tips to consider for your well-being this school year – with help from the support systems already around you: Make Talking About Mental Health With Your Friends A Habit
Findings from the report also revealed that nearly half of students selfreported that talking to a friend influenced their willingness to seek mental or behavioral health care. If you think you know someone who may be struggling, check in on them – and if you’re the one who needs support, consider reaching out to a friend for help. Being open about what you’re going through may help normalize mental health conversations on campus. Sometimes, all it may take is one conversation to spark powerful action.
Don’t Be Afraid to Talk With Your Parents
While mental health may seem like a daunting topic to bring up at home, letting your parents or caregivers know how you’re really doing can go a long way. They can serve as a trusted resource in finding you the proper support you need –especially since nearly half of college students remain on the family health plan.
Know What’s Available on Campus and Through Your Health Plan
Familiarizing yourself with your mental health resources before you need them can make a significant difference. Look into what’s available through your campus counseling center, student health plan, or your family’s health plan. Some insurers, such as UnitedHealthcare, offer a range of options from digital tools including the Calm wellness app to virtual and in-person visits to 24/7 mental health support lines. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just not like yourself, knowing where to go for help makes it easier to take that first step.
Seek Professional Help When Necessary
If feelings of stress, anxiety or depression persist, don’t wait –get support. Make an appointment with your campus health center or talk to your primary care physician (PCP) if you have one. If you don’t have a PCP, now is a good time to establish care. Your provider can help guide you toward the right support or refer you to a specialist if needed.
Keep the Conversation Going After College
Staying in the habit of checking in on your mental health – and talking about it with friends – may help you navigate future transitions like a new job, a move, or financial independence.
No one expects you to figure everything out on

your own, especially when it comes to your health. So, be sure to make space for your mental wellbeing this
school year and remember: asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a step toward resilience.

Creek Flow Report: Modoc County Watermaster Service
The Modoc County Watermaster Department has released flow numbers for the week of September 1–5, continuing its regular monitoring of key creeks and water systems in the region. As late summer conditions persist, the data reflects steady reductions across several waterways.
Flow Numbers for September 1–5
• Davis Creek: 5.5 cfs
• New Pine Creek: 5 cfs
• Pine Creek (near Alturas): 8 cfs
• Emerson Creek: 5 cfs
• Soldier Creek: 3 cfs
• Eagle Creek: 4 cfs
• Cedar Creek: Dry
• Shields Creek: 3 cfs
• Bidwell Creek: 3.5 cfs
• Cottonwood Creek: < 1 cfs
• Parker Creek: < 1 cfs
• Deep Creeks: Dry
• Mill Creek (Lake City): 2 cfs
• Pine Creek (Surprise Valley): Dry

• Briles Reservoir: Closed Conditions and Trends
Flows across most creeks remain low, with further declines noted in Cottonwood and Parker Creeks, both now registering below 1 cfs. Pine Creek near Alturas, however, recorded a slight rebound to 8 cfs compared with last week’s 6 cfs. Several systems—including Cedar Creek, Pine Creek in Surprise Valley, and the Deep Creeks—remain dry. The closure of Briles Reservoir further underscores the limited water availability as the region moves deeper into the dry season.
Outlook
With temperatures holding above seasonal averages and little relief in sight, additional reductions are likely in the coming weeks. Water users should continue to expect fluctuations in availability, particularly

Lassen County Sheriff Busts Illegal Marijuana Grows, Seizes Nearly a Ton of Pot

Authorities in Lassen County say they seized nearly 13,500 marijuana plants and almost a ton of processed cannabis during a weeklong operation targeting illegal cultivation sites in the northern part of the county.
The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, working with state and local agencies, served search warrants on six parcels between Sept. 2 and Sept. 5. Investigators reported finding 13,496 marijuana plants, 1,929 pounds of processed marijuana and five firearms.
Deputies also dismantled 31 unpermitted structures and removed thousands of pounds of garbage and dangerous pesticides.
Many of the sites were diverting water illegally from nearby streams, officials said.
Sheriff John McGarva said none of the grows were licensed by the state or county. Property owners will be taxed based on the size of their grows.
The operation included support from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the California Department of Justice’s Eradication and Prevention of Illicit Cannabis unit, Lassen County Code Enforcement, Lassen County Environmental Health, the Lassen County Road Department and the California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations Division.

It’s the perfect place to gather for the day and on into the night to learn more about the value of dark skies and why it’s important to protect them.
“We encourage folks from the more urban areas of northwest Nevada and northeast California to take the scenic drive to Cedarville to see for themselves what they’re missing back home,” said Friends Executive Director Shaaron Netherton. “The proliferation of artificial light has literally blinded us to a truly dark sky and what it reveals to us.
