Obituary

Raymond Wayne Abernethy Raymond Wayne Abernethy, known to many as “Big Ray,” passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, in Alturas, California, with his children by his side. Ray was born on December 4, 1943, in Ottawa, Canada. At the age of seven, he and his family relocated to Washington, where he grew up. Ray graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington, in

September 3, 2026 1963. Active, competitive, and always up for a challenge, Ray ran track in school, taking third place in the 440yard run at the Elks Junior Olympics. He also played football, played in the school and pep bands, and served as a school savings manager and Red Cross representative. He won first place in a state sales contest with the Stadium Castle Retailers, which took him to Chicago for a national school club meeting. In March 1966, Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army. He proudly served two years of active duty as a butcher, earning a Rifle Marksman Badge and the National Defense Service Medal, before being honorably discharged from the Army Reserve in 1972. Following his military service, Ray lived for many years living in Monterey, working in tree trimmer and masonry. He loved spending time at local spots like Cannery Row, Mission Ranch, Sadie’s Bar, Bennie and Anea’s Bar, Bar Rondeview, and the Brick House. He also had a passion for fast cars, winning a streetclass car race in Monterey in 1969, and cherished beach days spent making memories with his son, Ray.

In the late 1990s, Ray moved to Alturas, California, where he spent the remainder of his life. Before earning his real estate license, he worked as a bartender at the Niles Hotel, which was owned by his brother John and family. Ray was a proud devoted Modoc Brave fan, never missing a football game or wrestling match that his son Ray competed in. Ray also visited the local jail and women’s prisons to offer ministry, support, and conversation. (Ray loved the ladies). For the last 16 years of his life, his greatest joy was being “Papa” to his grandchildren, whether they were watching movies and TV series together or watching and cheering them on at their baseball and softball games. Ray lived a big, exciting life. He mastered Wing Chun Kung Fu, loved riding his motorcycles, and was a devoted Raiders fan, and watching a Sunday football game will never be the same without him. The life of every party, the extra words he always added when singing “Happy Birthday” will be missed, but forever remembered with a smile. Ray had a way of making everyone feel welcome. He could turn a simple

He will be remembered for his stories, his laughter, and his kindness. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ronald and Garry; and his son, Ray Webb. He is survived by his children, Raymond, Ryan, Isaac and Nicole; his grandchildren, Elijah, Audrie, Raylie, Raymond, Ryan, Kyndall, Kennedi, Kayla, and Skyler. He is also survived by his sister, Valerie; his brothers, Doug (Lillian), John (Liliana), and Michael; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Toxic Algal Bloom Detected on the Modoc National Forest The California Department of Water Resources and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have issued an algal mat alert for areas in the Warner Mountain Ranger District; East Creek located 1 mile South of the South Warner road above Mosquito Creek , Owl Creek 1.2 miles above county road 1, and Twelve mile creek 1 mile East of Mount Bidwell on the Modoc National Forest. Please use caution when recreating near these areas. While harmful algal blooms (HABs) are caused by algae or cyanobacteria that grow suspended in the water column (planktonic), some algae grow attached to the bottom (benthic) and

can form algal mats. Some species can produce toxins, and if present, can pose a risk to humans and pets. Here are a few actions to keep in mind: *Heed all instructions on posted advisories if present. *Avoid algae and scum in the water and onshore. *Keep an eye on children and your pets (dogs). *If you think an algal mat is present, do not let pets and other animals go into or drink the water, or eat scum and algal accumulations on the shore. *If you think an algal mat is present, reduce the potential for inhalation of sprays or mists by avoiding areas downwind of the bloom, and

activities near the bloom that could kick up spray such as splashing. *Don’t drink the water or use it for cooking. * Wash yourself, your family, and your pets with clean water after water- play in the affected area. *If you catch fish, throw away guts and clean fillets with tap water or bottled water before cooking Updates to this report will be provided by a routine water monitoring program that conducts site visits at this waterway. Crews quickly extinguish multiple fires along Highway 395 in Modoc County

Three fires broke out along Highway 395 in Modoc County on Wednesday, prompting temporary road closures as fire crews and law enforcement responded to the scene. The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office reported the fires started from the Brass Rail area east toward the Agricultural Station. Westbound lanes were closed, and officials asked drivers to avoid the area. No evacuations were ordered. According to Cal Fire, there were three fires total, designated the Pencil Fires.

The largest reached 0.4 acres, another reached 0.04 acres, and a small fire was reported within city limits across from the Brass Rail. Forward progress was stopped and the fires were quickly extinguished by fire crews. National Interagency Fire Center data shows the fires were discovered at 11:57 a.m. Aug. 26. The MCSO issued an

update at 12:39 p.m. stating that one-way traffic control was in place along Highway 395, with fire crews and law enforcement on scene. By 1:54 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office reported the highway was fully reopened and emergency resources had cleared the area. The cause of the fires remains under investigation by Cal Fire.

Construction continues on Highway 299 at Pit One Grade Motorists traveling on State Route 299 near Pit One Grade should continue to use caution as Caltrans crews work on the ongoing Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation Project. The project, located on SR 299 in Shasta County near Fall River Mills, is designed to improve safety by reducing the risk of rocks and debris reaching the highway. Work includes the installation of permanent rockfall mitigation systems, including drapery and cable systems, as well as improvements to drainage and the roadway. The extended traffic holds that were scheduled for late August and early September have now passed. Current Caltrans highway information indicates that one-way traffic controls remain in effect at some locations along SR 299,

with delays of up to approximately 15 minutes reported at certain construction areas. Drivers traveling through the Pit One Grade area are encouraged to allow additional travel time, follow posted traffic-control signs and remain alert for construction personnel and equipment.

The Pit One Grade project remains listed among Caltrans District 2’s current projects. Motorists should check current road conditions before traveling, as construction schedules and traffic controls can change based on project needs and conditions.

BLM Temporarily Closes Public Lands in Northern California Due to S-1 Vya Fire

The Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed public lands near Cedarville and Fort Bidwell due to wildland firefighting operations for the S-1 Vya Fire. The emergency closure takes effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice to ensure public and firefighter safety, according to the agency’s Applegate Field Office. The fire began on Aug. 24. The affected area spans public lands situated between Modoc County Road 1 to the west and Nevada Highway 34/Fort Bidwell Road to the east. The northern boundary is marked by Modoc County Road 6/Barrel Springs Byway, and the southern boundary extends to Nevada State Route 8A. The Fee Reservoir Campground is included in the closure and is currently inaccessible to the public. Under Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations, exceptions to the closure order include: Federal, state, and local officers or employees performing official duties. Members of organized rescue, medical, or firefighting crews. BLM employees, agents, and contractors on official business. Individuals holding written permission signed by an authorized BLM officer. Grazing permittees impacted by the fire, acting in coordination with the Applegate Field Office. Notice of the closure is posted online via the BLM Applegate Field Office website and BLM California social media channels. Physical notices are posted at the Applegate Field Office, the Surprise Field Station, and along major access intersections including Modoc County Road 1 at County Roads 6, 15, and California Highway 299, as well as

Nevada Route 8A at Highway 34. Violators may face federal penalties, including fines under 18 U.S.C. 3571 and up to 12 months imprisonment under 43 U.S.C. 1733(a). Suspect in Critical Condition Following Officer-Involved Shooting Near Alturas A 29-year-old man remained in critical condition Thursday following an officer-involved shooting near Alturas after he allegedly charged law enforcement officers with two hammers, according to the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office. Michael Ernest Ehmen was hospitalized in Redding following the Aug. 24 confrontation near the intersection of Sportsman Drive and Parker Drive in an unincorporated area of Modoc County. No officers were injured. The incident began earlier that afternoon when a resident on California Pines Boulevard called 911 to report a burglary in progress. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner confronted Ehmen after discovering he had forced entry into the residence. Ehmen allegedly pointed the homeowner’s own pellet rifle at him before a physical altercation ensued, during which Ehmen slashed the homeowner’s hand with a knife and attempted to stab him before fleeing. Investigators said the reporting party provided video clearly identifying Ehmen as the suspect. Law enforcement located Ehmen near Parker Drive

and Sportsman Drive. When officers attempted to stop him, he fled down a hillside, leading a pursuit of several hundred yards. Four officers eventually encountered Ehmen hiding behind trees and brush roughly 20 feet away on a plateau. Authorities stated that Ehmen charged at one of the officers with a claw hammer in one hand and a prospector pick hammer in the other, prompting the shooting. Officers administered first aid at the scene before Ehmen was flown to Redding for treatment. The shooting followed several days of escalating events involving Ehmen, investigators said. Sheriff’s officials noted that Ehmen had been released from custody Aug. 20 with a courtordered GPS ankle monitor. Data indicated the monitor

was cut off near the Alturas City Pound, which was burglarized late Aug. 20, resulting in the theft of two of Ehmen’s three impounded dogs. The Shasta County multiagency Officer-Involved Critical Incident Response Team was called in at approximately 4:45 p.m. Aug. 24 to investigate the shooting, with the scene secured by the Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and federal partners. Criminal charges filed with the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office include attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and resisting an executive officer.

The Modoc Yetis 11-andunder team secured a championship finish over the weekend, capturing the 11U silver bracket title during tournament play in Medford on Aug. 22–23. The two-day event featured

competitive pool play before teams were seeded into single-elimination brackets. After navigating their early matchups, the Yetis earned a spot in the silver bracket and delivered back-to-back performances on Sunday to

claim the top spot. The weekend title marks a highlight in the late-summer tournament circuit for the Modoc club as they continue their season.

Community Comes Together for the 105th Annual Modoc District Fair

The 105th Modoc District Fair drew community members to Cedarville for four days of festivities recently, concluding with a celebration of local tradition and agricultural achievement. The fair’s final day began with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Surprise Valley Community Church. Grand marshals Gene and Wynarda Erquiaga led the Main Street parade following the breakfast. The event concluded with the Devil’s Garden Colt Challenge, the second of two monster truck performances, and the First 5 tricycle race. Attendees also visited various exhibits and vendors, and the Wold Amusements carnival on the midway. Tyler Harris was named the high point horseman at this year’s Rancher’s Day event. Harris received a custom-made saddle as the top prize, which will be handmade to his exact specifications. Other highlights included Best of Show winners, who received $25 cash awards. In agriculture, winners included Kay Antunez de Mayola for dried beans; Audra Evans for eggs and salt block;

Sean Curtis for jams and jellies; Mackenzie Nabors for an oldfashioned basket; Clayton Oilar for fruit, ag gimmicks and vine crops; Robin Hagge for leafy vegetables; Cathy Carlock for herbs and garlic; Karen Hill for a boot and hat display; and SVJUSD for a scarecrow. Arts and crafts honors went to Barbara Read for fine arts; Tyler Albaugh for wood; and Florence Bordwell, Syndi Taylor and Holly Stains for collectibles. In the baking and confections category, winners were Audra Evans and Fallon Voelker for quick breads; Audra Evans for cookies; Sean Curtis and Dixie Miller for yeast breads; and Henry Seibt for confections. Mackenzie Nabors took top honors in education (STEM). Floral winners included Karen Hill for cut flowers and arrangements, and Florence Bordwell for the Modoc container. In photography, awards went to Fallon Voelker for black and white and Lisa Youell Jeanney for color. Jennifer Henson was recognized in the sewing and textiles category. Susie Stokke and Danielle Jones tied for the top prize in the American flag

pallet contest, sharing the $250 first-place award. The greased pig contest and Kids Day Rodeo were among the most popular attractions. Other events included a horse show, junior gymkhana, companion dog show, wiener and corgi dog races, a mechanical bucking bull contest, and the livestock show. Local quilters also displayed their work in the annual quilt show. The Hot Summer Car Show featured a variety of vintage vehicles, including several Kizer automobiles in excellent condition from the early to mid-1950s. The Modoc District Fair is organized through the efforts of volunteer Modoc Heritage Foundation members. These volunteers work throughout the year in partnership with the fair board to plan and host the event. The fair also relies on support from local sponsors and volunteers.
