Cal Fire Lassen-Modoc Unit-Facebook The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the
Fire Prevention Trailer. They gained essential knowledge on battery safety, evacuation strategies, and overall fire preparedness, in addition to learning about the dangers of playing with fire equipment and understanding firefighter fitness and gear. This community-focused initiative, shared by the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc
Unit, shows the strong commitment to public safety education, ensuring younger residents understand critical fire prevention measures. By teaching these crucial lessons at an early age, the program helps build safer communities through increased awareness and preparedness. Residents are encouraged to follow the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc

This year’s judging panel included Fraser Shennan of Scotland, 2023 International Supreme winner; Peter Morgan of Northern Ireland, 2021 and 2024 Irish national champion; Bruce Fogt of Ohio, a two-time USBCHA National Finals winner; and Russell McCord of Texas, USBCHA vice president. Alongside the trial fields, a trade show highlighted food and craft vendors, including Sweet Pampered Baker, Java
Doc, My Rhubarb Patch, Bar T Bar Brand, Spicebridge, and Untamed Cowgirl. Modoc County Court Grants Probation in Child Endangerment Case
A Modoc County jury has convicted Robbie Barnes of felony child endangerment and misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine following a trial concerning the living conditions of her adolescent daughter, officials announced. A June 2025 investigation into the theft of several firearms led Modoc County Sheriff’s deputies to search a
residence where Barnes was alleged to have been living. During the search, deputies recovered stolen firearms, methamphetamine and equipment associated with manufacturing marijuana honey oil. During the trial, the defense claimed Barnes did not live at the residence Continue on page 7

Obituary
Gregory Dean Weed 07/15/1958 – 09/18/2026
Gregory Dean Weed, 68 died very unexpectedly in Alturas, California on September 18, 2026. He was born July 15, 1958 to Marvin and Caroline Weed. He was the third of five children and grew up in Rohnerville, California. He attended Fortuna High School and graduated in 1976. In 1978
he married Barb Coppini and they began their life together and their marriage of 48 years. They lived in the Tacoma area for the first years of their marriage then moved to Likely in May of 1982 where they have resided ever since. Greg worked in many capacities during his
lifetime. He began his career in construction, worked in distribution, became a manufactured home salesman, was an employer, a cook, a barista, a manager, and a deliveryman. Whatever he was involved in, he gave it his all. His greatest achievement were his sons, Phil and Brian. He took them hunting, fishing, and camping. He taught them to work hard and to play hard. He attended all their sports activities and anything they were involved in. He was especially proud of who they became as men. Greg was also involved in many affiliations. He became fire chief for the Likely Fire Department shortly after arriving in Likely and held that position for many years. He was also a past Captain of the Modoc County Sheriff’s Posse, a member of the Elk’s Lodge and a member of the West Valley Users Group. He liked to be involved in the community and made many long lasting friendships by doing so. Greg is survived by his wife, Barb, son and wife, Brian and Kaici and grandchildren, Haizley and Cooper. He is also survived by his brother Harvey & Patty Weed, sisters Connie Weed and Janet Harwood, In-laws Cindy &
Mike Walsh, Terry & Dan Pambianco, Ed & Laura Coppini, Diane Coppini and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Phil, his brother and sister-in-law Rod and Carol Weed. A celebration of the life and times of Greg Weed, Likely, California will be held at the Likely Fire Hall, Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 1:00 pm. A side dish or dessert would be appreciated. Greg’s generosity and impishness will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Greg’s memory to the Likely Fire Department, P.O. Box 515, Likely, CA 96116. Modoc High School Unveils Grant-Funded Digital Marquee

On Oct. 1, a subcontractor of Stewart Signs was on-site at Modoc High School to replace the marquee at Main Street and East Eighth Street. In the June 17 edition of the Modoc Record, it was announced this would be done after securing two grants totaling $37,000. The project is
funded by $7,000 from the Pacific Power Foundation and $30,000 from the McConnell Fund of the Community Foundation of the North State. The new marquee will be designed to serve as a community hub for school announcements and public safety alerts, such as
fire information or utility repair updates. It is also expected to generate revenue through local advertising. The new display offers superior brightness and updated branding featuring the school logo.

non-truthful defense information at trial. Law enforcement officers reported finding methamphetamine and a loaded firearm in close proximity inside the residence, along with a disassembled setup for producing marijuana honey oil. Assistant District Attorney Richard Cotta noted that active honey-oil extraction involving butane creates highly combustible vapors capable of igniting or exploding from an ordinary ignition source. Despite concerns regarding Barnes’ statements and the home conditions, the court granted her felony probation based on her limited criminal record and the potential impact
incarceration would have on her daughter. A 180-day county jail sentence was stayed pending compliance with probation. “Our office was mainly concerned with the deplorable conditions in which Ms. Barnes was raising her adolescent daughter,” Cotta said. “No child should be raised in such despicable—and preventable—conditions.” The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office thanked the jurors for their service. Cotta acknowledged the increasing demands on the local jury system, adding that community participation remains essential to maintaining law and order.

Tuesday October 13th Modoc Crazy Quilters Modoc Crazy Quilters gather every Tuesday at the Federated Church from 9 am-3pm. Come and go as you can, bring a project or just come visit. The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) Lunch The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) receives lunches every Tuesday and Thursday at the Senior Center in Cedarville. Lunch starts at noon, but conversation starts around 11:30. If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley. We also have a potluck the 3rd Wednesday of every month. So come on down for some good food, conversation and laughs. Building More Than Wrestlers: A Community Effort Led by Heart
In a small community like ours, programs aren’t built by facilities or funding alone— they’re built by people. And this year, our youth wrestling program has been strengthened in a powerful way thanks to a group of dedicated young men who chose to give back—not for recognition, not for pay—but simply because they care. We would like to recognize Emmett Pedotti (Class of 2025), Gunner Kramer (Senior), Tallon YoungCockrell (Sophomore), and Von Whitlock (Sophomore)
for their unwavering commitment to the next generation of wrestlers. These young men have volunteered their time, energy, and knowledge to help build something bigger than themselves—and that kind of character is what truly defines our program. What makes this even more meaningful is the connection to Modoc Vineyard Academy. Having MVA students involved in our wrestling program represents more than just participation—it reflects a shared commitment
to developing discipline, leadership, and integrity in our youth. Wrestling is more than a sport; it is a foundation for life, and these young men embody that every day they step into the room. Coach Emmett Pedotti began helping in 2024 while still competing at the high school level. After finishing his own practices and matches, he would show up with a smile and unmatched positivity, ready to pour into younger athletes. His consistency and leadership have set the tone for what it means to lead by

example. Tallon Young-Cockrell, a standout wrestler over the past two years, returned after his own successful season with one goal in mind—to give back. His willingness to invest in younger wrestlers speaks volumes about his character and his love for the sport. Gunner Kramer showed
incredible resilience this season. Despite suffering a significant knee injury, he continued to show up— brace and all—committed to teaching technique and mentoring young athletes. His toughness and selflessness did not go unnoticed and left a lasting impression on everyone in the room. Von Whitlock has been a constant presence, ready to step in wherever needed. Whether it was partnering with wrestlers, assisting in drills, or simply offering encouragement, Von brought energy, reliability, and a deep understanding of the sport that our youth greatly benefited from. These young men represent what our wrestling program is all about—hard work, sacrifice, and giving back. Their impact goes far beyond wins and losses. They are helping shape confident, disciplined, and respectful young athletes who will carry these values with them for years to come. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank them. Modoc Yetis & Lady Yetis Hit It Out of the Park at Hit-A-Thon STEPHEN KING
After being rescheduled due to some unpredictable Modoc weather, the Modoc Yetis and Lady Yetis were finally able to take the field for their Hit-AThon fundraiser on Thursday, September 10, at Rotary Fields. Players from both the baseball and softball programs stepped up to the plate and put their skills to work, hitting to raise money for their teams. Each athlete collected pledges and sponsorships leading up to the event, with supporters
donating a flat amount or pledging based on the number of hits made. The evening was about much more than baseball and softball. Families and community members came together to enjoy great food, raffle baskets, and plenty of time cheering on our local athletes. It was a fun night filled with teamwork, laughter, and community support. The Modoc Yetis and Lady Yetis programs are supported through fundraising and sponsorships,
making events like the Hit-AThon incredibly important. Funds raised help provide opportunities for our local athletes to travel, compete, develop their skills, and represent Modoc County at tournaments throughout the region. A special thank you goes to the businesses and individuals who helped make the Hit-A-Thon possible through donations and support, including NAPA Auto Parts, Stitchworks, Holiday Market, Battram Heating & Air, Double-A Cafe, and Lazy B. We would also like to thank every person who sponsored a player, purchased food or raffle tickets, donated items, volunteered their time, helped organize the event, or simply came out to cheer on the kids. The continued support from our community is what makes these opportunities possible. Most importantly, thank you to our Yetis and Lady Yetis players for working hard, stepping up to the plate, and making the evening a success. Endorsed Ballot Initiatives 2026 Proposition
Recommendation
Proposition 1: The Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026. Authorizes $11.25 billion in general obligation bonds for affordable housing, homeownership, and veteran home-loan programs, including farmworker housing.
OPPOSE REASONING: California is already paying off billions in bond debt, all at a cost to the general fund to service the debt payments. While a critical need, the funding for farmworker housing is not enough to make this a worthy effort.
Proposition 2: Save for California's Future Act. Raises the state's rainy day fund cap from 10% to 20% of General Fund revenues and expands required paydown of state liabilities.
NO POSITION REASONING: CAFB does not have policy on this topic.
Proposition 3: California Children's Education and Health Care Protection Act of 2026. Makes permanent the 2012 voter-approved high-income tax rates, directing revenue to K-12 schools and community colleges.

Proposition 4: California Fair Elections Act of 2026. Establishes a public campaign financing option for candidates for elective office, subject to expenditure limits and eligibility criteria.

Proposition 41: Requires Audits of Programs Funded by New State Special Taxes. Requires audits of programs funded by new state special taxes and prohibits new state taxes from being excluded from the existing voter-approved spending limit.
SUPPORT REASONING: Fiscal responsibility, and transparency is critical with taxpayer money.
Proposition 42: Prohibits New State Personal Property Taxes and Certain Retroactive State Taxes. Prohibits new state taxes on the ownership of personal property, including business interests and intellectual property, and prohibits retroactive state taxes.
SUPPORT REASONING: California is already an expensive state to live in. There should not be another tax burden that will impact all Californians.
Proposition 43: Local Taxes: Limitation. Requires local special taxes, including those imposed by citizen initiative, to receive two-thirds voter approval, closing a court-created initiative loophole.
SUPPORT REASONING: Restores 2/3rd vote on local special taxes which must be protected.
Proposition 44: Requires Community Health Clinics Spend 90% of Revenue on Program Services. Requires nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Centers to spend at least 90% of revenue on direct program services rather than administration or overhead.

Proposition 45: Modifies Environmental Review for Certain Projects. To encourage investment in infrastructure and limit CEQA ligation abuse, sets deadlines, streamlines review, and limits litigation for housing, transportation, water, health, and clean energy projects; directs CEQA to give substantial weight to project approval and to prevail over conflicting state laws.
SUPPORT REASONING: CEQA reform is desperately needed. Prop 45 will assist in priority issues for Farm Bureau members – wildfire fuel reduction projects, water infrastructure. While there are members and policy on both sides of this argument, the overwhelming benefit that comes from Prop 45 outweighs the negatives and should be supported.

Modoc High School Celebrates Homecoming Week with Parade, Athletics, and Crownings in Alturas

Modoc High School celebrated homecoming Sept. 28 through Oct. 3 with a “Ticket to Paradise” theme, daily dress-up themes, class competitions, athletics and traditional homecoming events. The week took off Monday with Airport Attire. Powderpuff football followed from 6 to 9 p.m., with the sophomore Class of 2029 winning the competition. Tuesday’s Mountains vs. Beach theme accompanied home soccer and volleyball matches against Fall River. Soccer and junior varsity volleyball began at 5 p.m.,
followed by varsity volleyball at 6 p.m. The student section dressed for a Pool Party theme. Students wore mismatched vacation clothing for Wednesday’s Lost Luggage theme. A bonfire was held from 7 to 9 p.m., where Colin Jeffers was crowned homecoming king. Thursday featured an American Road Trip theme, with students wearing red, white and blue. The junior class won the boxershort volleyball competition, held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday brought the week home with the Home Sweet

Homecoming theme and purple-and-white attire. A parade began at noon, followed by a rally and a staff game against the boxershort volleyball winners. Junior varsity football played Weed at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity team faced Fall River at 7:30 p.m. Modoc defeated Fall River High School 28-14. Jeffers with 116 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown, along with 34 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. The win was Modoc’s highestscoring game of the season and moved its record to 2-4, according to MaxPreps. Fall
River’s touchdowns were scored by Raul Iniguez and Carson Smith. Abby DePaul was crowned homecoming queen during halftime of the varsity game. The full homecoming court included freshman lord and lady Kilian Moltzen and Tatum Zapanta; sophomore duke and duchess Jonathan Marquez and Gemma Coates; and junior prince and princess Josh Minto and Maddy Moltzen. Senior king nominees were Tyler Guasp and Gunner Kramer, and senior queen nominees were Ella Battram and Zella Taylor. Jeffers and
DePaul were named the 2026 homecoming king and queen. Class awards were spread across the school. The freshmen won the float competition, the seniors won spirit week and the juniors won boxershort volleyball. Homecoming concluded Saturday. Modoc hosted Lost River High School for volleyball at 1 p.m., with a camo theme, before the senior Class of 2027 hosted the homecoming dance from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

Modoc County District Attorney Nina Salarno joined victims’ families, prosecutors, law enforcement leaders and public safety advocates Oct. 1 at a Peace Officers Research Association of California and Criminal Justice Legal Foundation event to speak out against new regulations creating
a pathway for sentence reductions, including for some individuals serving life without parole. Speaking at the California Firefighters Memorial, Salarno stood alongside families impacted by violent crime and emphasized the importance of protecting victims’ rights and ensuring
their voices remain central to California’s criminal justice system. Salarno said she was proud to represent Modoc County and stand with victims, their families and public safety leaders from across the state on an issue with lasting consequences for those who have suffered loss.

CAL FIRE Arrests Suspect in Lassen County Vegetation Fire
State fire officials arrested a suspect in connection with a vegetation fire near Milford late last month, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced Thursday. FIRE’s Lassen Modoc Unit responded to a report of the Grade Fire off Old County Road 59 on Milford Grade around noon on Sept. 24. While units were en route, officers with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office alerted CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers to a suspicious individual in the area. CAL FIRE officers responded and located sheriff’s deputies who had detained the suspect. Following an investigation, the unnamed individual was arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail. The suspect faces multiple charges, including: • Arson of a structure or forest land (Penal Code
451(c)) • Providing false identification to a peace officer (Penal Code 148.9) • Entering a property without consent of the owner (Penal Code 602(m)) • Building fires on another person’s land without permission (Penal Code 602(j)) • Setting fire to lands of another (Public Resource Code 4421) CAL FIRE credited several agencies for assistance in suppressing the blaze and aiding the investigation, including the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Milford Fire Department, U.S. Wildland Fire Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.
