While the exact birthplace is debated, the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace in 1966. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30, 1868, known then as Decoration Day.

Originally honoring those lost in the Civil War, the holiday evolved after World War I to commemorate all American military personnel who died in all wars. This expanded to include casualties from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following proclamations by presidents including Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, Congress passed legislation making Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971.

This community-focused initiative, shared by the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc

By teaching these crucial lessons at an early age, the program helps build safer communities through increased awareness and preparedness. Caltrans Project on Highway 299 in Shasta County Near Fall River Mills to Cause Delays up to 89 Minutes

A $13.2 million Caltrans rockfall mitigation project on State Route 299 in Shasta County will cause traffic delays of up to 89 minutes starting tentatively on June 1, as crews begin a 10-day operation to remove large boulders.

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

Extended traffic control is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the project site, which is west of Fall River Mills between the Pit River Falls and Canyon Vista Point and Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road. The maximum 89-minute

Submissions can be emailed to info@modocmedia.com.

Motorists are advised to avoid using the Pit River directly south of the project limits along SR 299 during construction.

Veterans Day is not only about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the ongoing contributions of veterans in our neighborhoods, workplaces and families.

Community members are invited to help shape the guide. If you or someone you know has served, Modoc Media encourages you to submit a photo, name and years of service.

The Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation project, which is designed to improve public and worker safety, includes constructing an 8-foot-wide catchment area adjacent to the roadway, installing new rockfall mitigation drapery systems, and removing loose and unstable rock through a process called scaling. A select area of large boulders will be removed by excavation, while others will be held in place by anchored

The existing roadway will be cold planed and repaved with a 0.1-foot layer of hot mix asphalt to restore it after construction. Additional work includes replacing or improving six culvert segments and installing new pavement markers, signs, and delineators.

Alturas Fire Department Suspends Outdoor Burning Due to High Fire Danger

The Alturas Fire Department has suspended all outdoor burning within city limits beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 22, citing elevated wildfire danger, dry vegetation and worsening weather conditions.

The citywide burn suspension applies to residential burn piles, yard debris burning, agricultural burning within city limits and any outdoor burning not specifically exempted by law, according to a public notice issued by the department.

Fire officials said the temporary ban is intended to help protect lives, property and natural resources as Northern California enters a period of increased wildfire risk.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is also conducting fire hazard inspections throughout

Alturas. Residents are being asked to clear potential fire hazards from their properties, including dry grass, weeds, excessive vegetation, combustible debris and improperly stored flammable materials.

Officials encouraged homeowners to maintain defensible space around homes and other structures to reduce the risk of wildfire spread within the community.

The department also urged residents to use caution with activities that could ignite sparks or fires, including operating equipment in dry vegetation, improperly disposing of smoking materials, using outdoor cooking appliances and parking vehicles in dry grass.

Fire officials said weather and fire conditions can change

rapidly during wildfire season and emphasized that community cooperation is critical to protecting homes, businesses and emergency personnel.

The Alturas Fire Department encouraged residents to create and maintain defensible space

Collaborate on Memorial Day Poppy Display

Alturas Elementary fifth graders collaborated with Modoc High School art students to create a meaningful ceramic poppy display in honor of Memorial Day.

The finished artwork, now displayed around a large tree on the Alturas Elementary campus, serves as a tribute to the men and women who died while serving the country. School staff expressed pride in the

students’ dedication and the lasting memorial they have created.

The vibrant installation is intended to be enjoyed by the entire community. To preserve the meaningful artwork, staff asked community members to help protect the ceramic flowers by refraining from touching, pulling on, or breaking them. This ensures the tribute remains intact for all to appreciate.

All information concerning redemption or the initiation of an installment plan of redemption will be furnished, upon request, by Macey VonRader, Modoc County Tax Collector, 204 South Court Street, Alturas, California 96101. Phone number is (530) 233-6223.

The amount to redeem, including all penalties and fees, as of June, 2026 is shown opposite the parcel number and next to the name of the assessee.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www.nestortrustee. com, using the file number assigned to this case 202515755-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANTS: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil

The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or have consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
