The acquisition marks the start of a multiphased development plan intended to transform the former industrial grounds into a public railway history park and museum.

On June 4, Caltrans District 2 issued an updated timeline for the Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation project and expected traffic delays.
Caltrans will begin 24/7 traffic control on State Route 299 as part of the Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation project. The work, located west of Fall River Mills between Pit River Falls and Canyon Vista Point, aims to improve safety by installing rockfall mitigation systems and removing boulders.

We have a $10 million building for forestry yet our roads are “pit-i-ful”. Some never fixed. Fire is our #1 fear, outlying neighborhoods have many trees and one way streets. Secondary roads are unusable (craters). Will we be another LA or Maui?

Thursdays, from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Outside of these hours, the project will maintain 24/7 traffic control with a temporary signal, causing delays of up to 13 minutes. A 14-foot width restriction will be in effect, and motorists are advised to avoid using the Pit River directly south of the project limits.
The $13.2 million project includes scaling loose rock, excavating large boulders and repaving the roadway. It is expected to be completed by November 2026.

Kenneth R. Server
April 14, 1933 – May 23, 2026
Kenneth Server, 93, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the Oaks Assisted Care facility in Gilbert, Arizona. Born on April 14, 1933, in Alturas, California, to Ernest and Maude Server, Kenneth lived a life defined by hard work, deep love of family, and a remarkable career that took him across the American West and beyond.
Growing up in Alturas, Kenneth was a gifted and driven young man who excelled on the fields and courts of Modoc High School, competing in football, basketball, and track. He was also an excellent pitcher for a Modoc County baseball team — a passion for athletics that stayed with him throughout his life. Kenneth went on to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering in 1955. Upon graduation, he was hired by Kennecott Mines in Ruth, Nevada, where he would spend the next 19 years, ultimately serving as Mines Plant Engineer for eight years.
It was in Ely, Nevada, that Kenneth met the love of his life, Helen Strange, on a blind date at the KingPin Bowladrome in the Summer of 1957. The two married the next year and built a life together that would span 52 wonderful years.
After his time at Kennecott, Kenneth’s expertise and reputation opened doors to new opportunities. He joined Standard Oil to contribute to the development of its Oil Shale project in Northwest Colorado, then moved the family to Boise, Idaho, for a position with Morrison Knudsen. His career continued to evolve with roles at Colowyo Coal in Meeker, Colorado, and later Cyprus Coal, which brought the family to Aurora, Colorado in 1981. In 1988, Kenneth and Helen, along with their three youngest daughters, made another move to London, Kentucky — where Kenneth continued to put his lifelong expertise to work.
Kenneth and Helen made one final move together in 1996 when they moved to Prescott Valley, Arizona after Kenneth had retired. They lived happily together in a nice
home until Helen’s passing in 2011. In retirement, Kenneth stayed incredibly busy. He did thorough research into his family tree and created a detailed memoir. He lovingly created memory books for his wife and seven children. He also transformed his yard through extensive landscaping, constructing several life-sized saguaro cacti from concrete. He competed in the shot put at the Huntsman Senior Games in 2013 and 2018, winning the event for his age group in 2018.
On the week that Helen passed, Kenneth made the decision to accept and follow Jesus Christ as his Savior by being baptized into the Catholic Church. He took on some of Helen’s roles at St Germaine’s Catholic Church in Prescott Valley, attending daily mass and volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry for fourteen years.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ernest and Maude Server; his devoted wife, Helen; and Kenneth’s three younger siblings.
He is survived by his seven cherished children (Barbara Fisher, Jeffrey, Debra Forrester, James, Karen Renn, Aimee, and Melissa Sunderhaus), fourteen grandchildren, and sixteen greatgrandchildren. All who loved him very much.
Kenneth Server was a man of extraordinary character —a devoted husband, a loving father and a gifted, hardworking engineer. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral mass will be held on June 12th, (11 a.m.) at St Germaine’s Catholic Church in Prescott Valley.

Robert C. Carlisle was born in Denver, Colorado to Lucille (Griffin) Carlisle and Wallace Bailey Carlisle on May 27, 1937, the second of their four children. In the fall of that same year, the family moved to Berkeley, Ca. where they lived until 1953, when Bob’s dad moved them to Lafayette, Ca. Robert joined the Armed Forces and served his country state side from Nov. 1954 in Marines until his Honorable Discharge in Oct. 1962 from Army Reserve.
He married Barbara Anne Britton Feb. 20, 1965. They first settled in Surprise Valley and then bought their home in Alturas, Ca. in 1982. Barbara worked for US Bank and Modoc Co Tx Collectors and Bob, for Citizens Utilities and retired in 2007. They travelled in their RV all over the Western States until Barb passed on Sept. 9, 2009. They had no children. In 2012 Bob met Katherine Cook and on July 26, 2013, they were married and have lived in Susanville, Ca. Bob was modest, conservative, had a dry wit, a beautiful smile and was always willing to lend a helping hand where needed. He loved the outdoors, travelling in his pickup or RV, working with his hands and creating something out of castoffs. He stayed busy and worked circles around everyone in his garden, yard, about the house repairing and making improvements.
Bob was preceded in death by wife Barbara, his parents, Lucille and Wallace Carlisle, sister, Sue Shilts, nephew Scott Carlisle, and brother Edward and Eds wife Peg. Surviving Bob is wife, Katherine, her family, his brother Jim (Linda) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was hospitalized in Reno, NV. at Renown Hospital on May 5, 2026 and passed May 15, 2026. He fought so hard to live. The hospital staff and family alike referred to him as a tough little iron man and gently/lovingly cared for him. A good man who loved his country, family, friends and God’s Good Earth. There will be no services for Bob per his personal wishes.

Washington Family Involved in Highway 139 Crash Near
Susanville
A Washington family was involved in an early morning crash on Highway 139 north of Stone Ranch near Susanville, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators said the southbound vehicle drifted off the shoulder before striking trees and rocks. One person was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center with minor injuries. While the roadway remains open, CHP officials said it will be closed intermittently for vehicle recovery once a tow truck arrives.

Record Number of Graduates Honored at TEACH Adult Education Ceremony

Twenty adult learners were recognized for earning their high school diplomas during TEACH Adult Education’s graduation ceremony held Thursday, June 4, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Alturas. The graduating class represents the largest number of graduates in the history of the adult education program.
Approximately 80 family members and friends attended the celebration, filling the hall with applause and encouragement as graduates were recognized for their accomplishments. Eleven graduates were present to receive their diplomas and participate in the ceremony.

(Training, Employment and Community Help), was in attendance to welcome guests and congratulate graduates on their achievements. Ann Weaver of Lassen College and Sarah Merrick, director of Adult Education, presented each graduate and recognized the determination and perseverance demonstrated by the graduating class.

During the ceremony, graduates crossed the stage to receive their
diplomas and were celebrated by family members, friends, instructors, and community supporters.
The evening served not only as a recognition of academic achievement, but also as a testament to the determination and resilience required to return to school and complete a high school education as an adult.

TEACH Adult Education provides opportunities for adults throughout Modoc
County to earn a high school diploma, prepare for the GED examination, improve English language skills, develop digital literacy skills, and pursue citizenship education. The program serves adult learners from diverse backgrounds and helps individuals achieve educational, career, and personal goals.
As the largest graduating class in program history, the Class of 2026 stands as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished through hard work, persistence, and a commitment to education.

If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley.
We also have a potluck the 3rd Wednesday of every month. So come on down for some good food, conversation and laughs. Hope to see you there soon.

National OHV Safety Week: Donsquatch Shares Essential Wildfire Prevention Tips for Riders
As summer temperatures rise and fire danger increases on public lands, Donsquatch is reminding riders that forest protection starts with individual responsibility.
Donsquatch is the official off-highway vehicle (OHV) wildfire prevention and postfire recovery mascot for Quiet Warrior Racing LLC. His message aligns with 2026 National OHV Safety Week, which runs June 13-21. Wildfires are no longer seasonal events. Across California and the Pacific Northwest, megafires have damaged trail systems, destroyed infrastructure and impacted wildlife habitat. This has stretched the capacity of firefighters and land managers to maintain recovery efforts.
The OHV community plays a critical role in preventing human-caused fires and keeping public lands open.
A primary prevention tool is ensuring motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs and 4x4 vehicles are equipped with functioning spark arrestors. The USDA Forest Service requires spark arrestors that meet federal standards, as hot carbon particles from exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation.
Donsquatch also advises riders to inspect vehicles before every ride. Dry grass and pine needles can accumulate near exhaust systems, skid plates and engine compartments, creating ignition risks. During peak fire season, riders should carry a fire extinguisher, shovel and basic emergency gear. Additionally, vehicles should not be parked in tall, dry grass or left idling unnecessarily during extreme heat.
Responsible behavior includes staying on designated routes, obeying seasonal closures and respecting fire restrictions. Land managers implement temporary closures to reduce ignition risks and ensure safe access
for firefighters. Ignoring these closures damages natural resources and jeopardizes future access for the entire community.
Proper vehicle maintenance and compliance with manufacturer recommendations are essential. Overloaded or improperly modified vehicles can lead to breakdowns and operational hazards in rugged terrain. While many riders enjoy customizing their vehicles, safety and reliability must remain the priority during fire season.
The OHV community is encouraged to support local volunteer trail crews and stewardship partnerships. Across the West, volunteers help reopen trails, restore watersheds and educate the public. These partnerships are increasingly vital as agencies face staffing shortages and deferred maintenance.
“We Ride. We Care. We Restore,” Donsquatch said. Every rider has a role in protecting forests and ensuring the future of responsible OHV recreation.

Vegetation Fire Near Alturas Damages Structure, Burns Quarter Acre Along County Road 54
A vegetation fire reported at approximately 1:15 p.m. Tuesday on County Road 54 just outside Alturas burned about one-quarter acre and damaged a nearby structure, according to Cal Fire.
Firefighters from Cal Fire and the Alturas Rural Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly stopped the fire’s forward progress. The blaze spread to a nearby structure, which crews extinguished shortly after arrival.
One person was evaluated and treated for possible smoke inhalation.
According to Cal Fire personnel, the fire burned approximately 0.25 acre and caused an estimated 15% damage to the structure.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Alturas Police Issue Urgent Warning Regarding Law Enforcement Impersonation Scams
The Alturas Police Department is issuing an urgent warning to residents regarding a law enforcement impersonation scam, emphasizing that department officials will never call to request Social Security numbers, banking details, or any form of payment over the phone.
During these unsolicited calls, scammers may pose as representatives from local
police or Homeland Security. In some instances, they have even used the names of former police chiefs to gain trust while attempting to solicit sensitive personal and financial data.
Residents are advised to hang up immediately upon receiving such a call. To verify a claim, contact the Alturas Police Department directly at 530-233-2011. If any financial information
has been shared, contact your bank immediately; if personal identity information was disclosed, consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus.
Suspected fraud and identity theft should be reported to federal resources, including IdentityTheft.gov, ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov.

The Lassen Library District invites bids from qualified contractors for a solar array and natural gas generator installation project at the District’s facility located at 1618 Main Street, Susanville. Modoc Fire Safe Council is hiring a Defensible Space Technician. Modoc Fire Safe Council is a local nonprofit helping vulnerable citizens and homeowners reduce wildfire risk in our community. We are looking for a dependable, hardworking individual to join our team as a Defensible Space Technician. In this role, you will be responsible for weed eating, trimming, and light vegetation removal within 0–30 feet of homes, as well as clearing debris from gutters and rooftops. You will transport removed vegetation and green waste from job sites and operate and maintain weed eaters and hand tools safely. Additional duties may be assigned by your supervisor. Applicants must be 18 or older with a valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record and must own a reliable vehicle capable of hauling vegetation and towing a trailer if needed. Punctuality and reliability are essential; our clients depend on us showing up on time. The right candidate must be able to work outdoors in heat, on slopes, and in dusty conditions, and be able to lift 50 lbs and operate power equipment safely.
Experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or wildland fire is a plus, but we are willing to train the right person. Pay is $23.00–$25.00 per hour depending on experience. Mileage is reimbursed at the IRS rate ($0.725/mile) for all workrelated driving. This is a seasonal, part-time position of 40 hours per week, running from mid-June through October, serving seniors and disabled homeowners in Modoc County. Modoc High School to Install New LED Marquee After Securing $37,000 in Grants
Modoc High School is set to replace its aging marquee at Main and East 8th streets after securing two grants totaling $37,000. The project is funded by $7,000 from the Pacific Power Foundation and $30,000 from the McConnell Fund of the Community Foundation of the North State.
Faculty member Kevin Marcussen wrote the grant applications during off-duty hours and prep periods. The school board will review a recommendation for a retrofit of the existing structure. This approach, which includes new double-sided LED panels and updated signage, avoids the additional state architect requirements and expenses associated with a full
replacement. The new marquee will be designed to serve as a community hub for school announcements and public safety alerts, such as fire information or utility repair updates. It is also expected
to generate revenue through local advertising.
The initiative follows a push by Principal Kristen Budmark to secure external funding for school needs. Recent grants have also provided for library books, computers, baseball field repairs, physical education equipment, a golf simulator, two-way radios, and woodshop supplies.
Marcussen said the highresolution sign is expected to be installed before the start of the upcoming school year. While the dimensions will remain consistent with the current sign, the new display will offer superior brightness and updated branding featuring the school logo.
