Cal Pines Water Tender Crash Triggers Power Outage on County Road 60

Alturas Elementary Students Boost Fire Safety Skills with CAL FIRE

Crews responded at approximately 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to a crash involving a Cal Pines water tender on County Road 60, about four miles from County Road 54. The vehicle struck a power pole, triggering a power outage in the area. The lone occupant was transported to Modoc Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, according to Cal Fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Traffic control remained in place while crews worked to restore power, which was back for most of the area by 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.

My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The thought of being at the mercy of the far-left coastal population is way beyond unacceptable.

DR. GIBSON has become the first man in Modoc to own two cars. One is a runabout and the other is for touring. Dr. Gibson said the touring car eats up more than twice the gasoline of the little one… The Alturas stage between Alturas and Likely was held Monday by two masked men. The driver, Omer Hammers, was ordered at gunpoint to order the highwaymen the strong box that is reported to have held $1500. Later reports, however, indicated the box was empty.

108 Years Ago - 1918

W. J. AND P. S. Dorris will soon construct a huge reservoir about two miles east of Alturas on what is now known as Stockdill Slough. It will be about 12 ½ miles around and when completed it will afford a new system for holding back flood waters from the Warner Mountains. It is situated along the Alturas to Cedarville road and in future years one can expect to see boats skimming the surface and fishermen

Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history.

LYLE COOK, president of the Modoc Woolgrowers, reports that 1,595 coyotes, 170 bobcats and 126 porcupines were killed by hunters in Modoc-Lassen this past year… There may not be much of a lumber market, but the Edgerton mill in Adin is nonetheless employing 86 men and working two shifts… Shorty Bowers has promised a baseball game between his team and the Colored Monarchs here Sunday…

THE CITY hopes to install a solar energy heating system in the Alturas Swimming Pool in time for next season’s operation. There is $10,000 available for this project from the state since 1976.

Some Modoc County folk were born-and-raised here so they had no choice in finding themselves here, but some of us came here from coastal urban areas and we came here to get away from all that madness. My wife and I are not clueless former coastal folk, and we cherish the unique character and issues of Modoc County. Please vote no on redistricting our state!!

That throws Cedarville’s $10,000 school in the shade, but what we lose in the price of the building is made up in the fill in, as Cedarville has between 60-70 students and Alturas has between 20-30.

I agree with Mr. Middlebrook’s letter to the editor, yes in 1982 France honored Americans. I had a similar experience in England in the early 1980’s. At that time the whole World wanted to aspire to what Americans morally stood for Freedom-Liberty-Justice, and how well our economy was working for the working people. We were the envy of the World.

THE MODOC boys who enlisted in the Grizzlies, California’s 2nd Artillery, are making good. Modoc furnished 22 boys, and 13 of them already hold ranks of non-commissioned officers. Such a showing, while remarkable, it is not unexpected in view of the fact that the boys were above the average in physical and mental qualifications.

The County of Modoc is proud to announce the launch of its newly redesigned official website, marking a significant step forward in improving public access to government services, information, and community engagement.

As part of this modernization effort, the County’s website domain has transitioned from co.modoc.

ca.us to countyofmodoc. gov, providing residents and visitors with a more recognizable and trusted government web address. The new domain reflects the County’s commitment to transparency, accessibility, and effective communication with the public. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office and Health Services Department have undergone a refresh on their webpages in coordination with the County’s website.

Crews Battle Fast-Moving 3-1 Fire in Lassen County

Emergency responders are battling a rapidly expanding vegetation fire, dubbed the 3-1 Fire, which was first reported at 1:45 p.m. on July 7, 2026. The blaze ignited approximately 1.7 miles southwest of Fourth Butte and west of Little Valley Road.

By 2:09 p.m., crews encountered two separate

fires burning at a moderate rate of spread, covering five and 10 acres, respectively.

The two blazes merged within 20 minutes, expanding to 30 acres by 2:27 p.m. As the fire grew to 50 acres by 2:38 p.m., officials significantly ramped up resource requests, including additional engines, crews, water tenders, dozers, and air tankers.

The situation escalated quickly through the afternoon. By 2:54 p.m., authorities requested the closure of Little Valley Road from 5th Bell Highway to Little Valley as the fire reached 75 acres and crossed the roadway. Evacuation warnings were issued for zones LAS-137 and LAS139 at 3:21 p.m., followed by

warnings for zone LAS-127B at 3:45 p.m. and zone LAS141 at 3:59 p.m.

The fire experienced a massive surge in activity, reaching 570 acres by 4:29 p.m. due to short-range spotting. FIRIS OES Intel 12 mapped the blaze at 572 acres shortly thereafter. As of 6:31 p.m. Tuesday, the fire was officially mapped at 713 acres with 5 percent containment.

CAL FIRE issued an update Tuesday night Firefighters continue to make strong progress on the 3-1 Fire. Fire retardant has been placed around the majority of the fire, helping support containment efforts and providing firefighters with additional opportunities

to strengthen control lines. Effective at 8:00 PM June 7, the evacuation order for Little Valley has been lifted. Residents may return home; however, please remain alert and continue to use caution in the area as firefighting operations remain active.

As of 3:35 a.m. Wednesday morning, the fire is mapped at 800 acres remaining at 5 percent containment.

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the public avoid the Little Valley Road area to allow fire personnel and emergency vehicles clear access. Residents seeking evacuation shelter information are advised to call (530) 254-4500.

Surprise Valley Kicks Off Fifth Annual First Fridays Event in Cedarville

Surprise Valley welcomed residents and visitors

Friday July 3 for the start of the fifth annual First Fridays celebration, which featured local vendors, live music, food, shopping and family-friendly activities along Main Street. The monthly event is designed to encourage residents and visitors to support local businesses while providing entertainment in downtown Cedarville. These events continue through the first Friday of October.

The event, held from 5 to 9 p.m., brought together local businesses, artisans, nonprofit organizations and community groups for an evening of entertainment and shopping ahead of the Independence Day holiday.

Musician Mike McCourt provided live entertainment throughout the evening. Attendees participated in several activities, including

a watermelon-eating contest, an egg race, a children’s activity zone, old-time photos and a sip-and-paint class.

Local vendors offered handmade goods, crafts, outdoor recreation products and community information. Participating organizations included the Surprise Valley Advisory Council, Henny’s Homemade Heaven, Mountain Valley Adventures, Toochi’s Treats, Happy Place Soap Company, the Modoc County Arts Council, Modoc Feline Humane Society, the Senior Center Garage Sale and the Back Country Horsemen.

Several Cedarville businesses served food and beverages. Offerings included burrito bowls, ice cream, Philly cheesesteaks, burgers and drinks, while local restaurants and the Chamber bar welcomed visitors throughout the evening.

Many downtown businesses remained open, giving attendees an opportunity to shop at local retailers and

specialty stores. Participating businesses included Good Things, The 610, The Corner Store, The Vault, Valley Farm Store, Squeaky’s, Studio 540, Cressler House, Beam Market, Lani’s Lana, Woody’s Restaurant & Bar, Klay Cottage Plus, Warner Mountain Weavers, Humble Home, Wholesome Goodness,

Applegate Station, the Cal Vada Museum and Country Hearth.

According to event organizers, attendees who made purchases from participating businesses were entered into a raffle for a gift basket, and prizes and gift cards were awarded to winners of several activities.

Modoc County Civil Grand Jury Concludes 2025-2026 Term

The 2025-26 Modoc County Civil Grand Jury held its final meeting June 24. A civil grand jury investigates local government operations, public agencies and officials to identify potential improvements. Unlike a trial jury, it does not determine criminal guilt or innocence; instead, its focus is on ensuring transparency, efficiency and ethical performance in local government.

Every county has its own selection process. Modoc County impanels a new civil grand jury each July to serve a one-year term. To select a jury, questionnaires

are sent to random citizens and reviewed by a judge. A person can serve for two consecutive years, which helps when a new grand jury is selected. While jurors cannot disclose discussions from a previous term, returning members can provide knowledge of the structure and process.

The primary mechanism for the jury’s work is the issuance of public reports. These documents detail findings and offer recommendations to local agencies. Findings remain confidential until the final report is released.

Foreperson Marsha Barnes said she has enjoyed the experience. Key highlights for her included getting to know residents from throughout the county and learning how local government operates. Barnes said she enjoys being a civil servant and was grateful for the opportunity. Barnes encouraged anyone who receives a questionnaire to fill it out and return it, noting that serving on the civil grand jury is a rewarding experience that provides a broader understanding of local government operations.

If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley.

Modoc County Faces Increased Wildfire Risk: How to Stay Prepared

Modoc County residents face an increased wildfire risk this summer due to dry conditions following a mild winter. Modoc County has already seen a multitude of fires this summer, especially toward the end of June. Fortunately, a majority have been quickly mitigated before extensive damage occurred. Recent fires include the Whittemore Fire, which burned 20.3 acres northwest of Triangle Ranch Road near Crowder Flat Road on June 21. On June 23, the Rocky Fire, south of Delta Lake and approximately 6.5 miles west of Likely, burned 298 acres. The Mountain Fire on June 27, located 7.5 miles southwest of Davis Creek, burned approximately five acres. The Romero Fire burned 699 acres near Highway 395 on June 28, three miles north of Likely. Also on June 28, a hay fire occurred on County Road 54 and County Road 70; it was contained to a portion of the hay bales. On June 29, a fire was reported near the east end of Modoc Street and was quickly extinguished before significant spread. On June 30, the Hill Fire, 2.4 miles southwest of Fletchers

Place, burned 1.77 acres. Also on June 30, the Grove Fire burned 0.25 acres on Denver Drive and Sportsman Drive in Cal Pines Hill Unit 4. On July 1, a vegetation fire started on Ponderosa Drive just outside of Lookout near a residence. This was quickly extinguished before significant spread.

On July 7, a vegetation fire was reported on County Road 23 in Cedarville and was quickly contained.

Currently, the 3-1 Fire near Modoc County, which started July 7, remains active as of Wednesday morning.

As wildfire season continues across California, CAL FIRE is encouraging residents to spend one hour improving their home’s wildfire preparedness through a series of simple safety measures that can help reduce fire risk and improve evacuation readiness.

The agency’s “1-Hour Wildfire Ready Checklist” breaks preparedness into four time segments focused on defensible space, home hardening, emergency planning and final safety checks.

During the first 30 minutes, homeowners are encouraged

to improve defensible space by cutting dry grass and weeds to no more than 4 inches within 30 feet of their homes. CAL FIRE also recommends removing combustible materials, including dry plants and outdoor furniture, from within 5 feet of structures. Wood piles should be stored at least 30 feet from the home or protected with an ignitionresistant cover. Lawns and ornamental landscaping should also be maintained to reduce fire hazards.

The next 15 minutes should be spent strengthening the home by moving portable propane tanks and gas grills at least 10 feet away from structures. Residents are also advised to inspect exterior vents and cover any openings with 1/8-inch metal mesh to help prevent winddriven embers from entering the home.

CAL FIRE recommends using the following five minutes to prepare for pets by ensuring carriers, food and water are readily available and developing a plan to evacuate animals safely during an emergency.

The final 10 minutes should be dedicated to emergency

planning. Residents are encouraged to identify at least two evacuation routes, review those plans with family members and confirm that emergency go-bags contain important documents, medications and other essential supplies. Signing up for local emergency alerts and checking battery-powered radios are also recommended.

According to CAL FIRE, completing these tasks can significantly improve a home’s resilience to wildfire while helping families prepare to evacuate quickly if conditions change.

Wildfire preparedness information, defensible space guidance and additional resources are available through CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Preparedness program.

Additionally, the Modoc Fire Safe Council will offer two workshops this week.

The Defensible Space Workshop will be held July 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Alturas Garden Club. Attendees will learn practical methods for creating and maintaining defensible space to reduce wildfire risk and improve property resilience.

On July 11, the Modoc Fire Safe Council will host the CalPines Firewise Workshop at 11 a.m. at the Deer Springs Fire Station. This session focuses on how neighbors can collaborate to strengthen community preparedness through shared resources and projects. Both workshops offer opportunities to consult with local experts and connect with neighbors interested in wildfire safety.

Street for the 10:30 a.m. parade, announced by Craig Flournoy. Led by the Color Guard and a performance of “The StarSpangled Banner” by Elora Camacho, the procession featured more than 40 entries. Retired Master Sgt. Jimmy Richardson served as the 2026 grand marshal, leading a court that included Little Miss Fandango ZaZa

Chambers, Jr. Mr. Fandango Maverick Prince and Jr. Miss Fandango Amara Baca Barlese.

The parade showcased a high level of creativity, with TEACH claiming the overall sweepstakes victory. Other top honors were awarded across several divisions: the Alturas Rural Fire Department won in the Civic/Service category, while

the Likely Fire Department took the prize for Cars. In the Equestrian division, Lake County Jr. Rodeo Roundup earned the top spot, with We the People winning the Family category and Budding Tree Preschool named the Youth division winner. As the festivities shifted to the park for the afternoon, attendees explored a marketplace of handcrafted

goods, food and beverages. Local businesses and organizations hosted booths while children participated in various activities. The Klamath Falls-based band Night Fire provided a live soundtrack of upbeat music, capping off a day that many community members praised as a fitting continuation of Alturas’ long-standing summer tradition.

Project Location: The proposed facilities would be located within the Lake City USGS quadrangle in sections 12, 13, and 24 Township 44 north Range 15 east; on APN 026-080-018; APN: 026100-004; APN 026-100-014; APN 026-100-006; and APN 026-100-008. The proposed development areas are leased to the Applicant by various

private landowners. The Project area is relatively flat and presently used for the production of alfalfa or associated agricultural facilities.

Related Zoning and Uses: The well pads would occur in areas designated as Prime Farmland, Farmland of Statewide Importance, Farmland of local importance or Grazing land by the California Department of Conservation (CDOC). Description of Project:

The Applicant proposes to develop up to eleven geothermal test wells southwest of Upper Alkali Lake, and 1.85 miles north of Lake City within the Surprise Valley region of Modoc County. Specifically, the Project involves the development of up to eleven geothermal test wells on nine well pads drilled to a depth of 3,000-5,000 feet. During installation, each well pad would accommodate a drilling rig, support equipment, portable bathroom, baker tanks, and project vehicles. Well testing would consist of flowing the exploration well into baker tanks stationed on the well pad and monitoring the captured geothermal fluid for temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemistry and other parameters. Three new access roads would be developed to access well pads. The proposed access roads would stem off from Surprise Valley Road to the well pads. Existing access roads may require improvements to accommodate transportation of well and drilling equipment. Improved roads may be widened and surfaced as needed.

Primary access to the general Project area is provided by Surprise Valley Road which travels north and south through or adjacent to Project parcels. Existing agricultural roads stemming from Surprise Valley Road provide access to individual well pad development sites and will be improved as necessary to accommodate the proposed development.
