Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history. This little true story applies to the clueless coastal

folk who have no idea of the challenges and problems and issues of ranchers, farmers, loggers, and so on. I bet that if a survey was done on the coast that asked where their food comes from they’d think that their food grows on the shelves of grocery stores. If that same hypothetical survey asked coastal folk where the lumber comes from to build their houses they would not be able to answer that question.

THE BOARD of Supervisors has accepted the plans and specs for the $36,000 County High School building. That throws Cedarville’s $10,000 school in the shade, but what we lose in the price of the building is made up in the fill in, as Cedarville has between 60-70 students and Alturas has between 20-30.

I was keeping as far back on the shoulder as I could... it was 10 AM, maybe 3 cars whizzed by. All of a sudden a gold sedan, maybe year 1970, moved into the opposite lane and honked me. I’ve been honked good in my 83 years, but this LOUD honking lasted maybe 15 seconds. I want to tell the citizens of Modoc that I know that I was not doing right. I was clipping the juniper berries off a tree. My rocky eleven acres got burned pretty good in the Barnes fire (the fire crew saved the cabin and about 3 acres of trees). I am trying to replant the burned area. About the off-duty deputy who honked me, you done right. Yes, you thought I was a vagrant who came up from the river down there. No, I pay property taxes and try to drive safely. I’m keeping-off the shoulder in the future.

Fort Bidwell Man Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter in 2024 Cedarville Woman’s Drug-Related Death

A 34-year-old Fort Bidwell man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the drugrelated death of a Cedarville woman in late 2024, the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office said.
Derk Martin Aalpoel entered the plea Jan. 12 in Modoc County Superior Court in the death of 34-yearold Fawn Goodwin.
Modoc County Sheriff’s
deputies Joe Harris and Erik Von Rader investigated the case, conducting an inquiry that included reviewing digital records, interviewing witnesses and serving search warrants, the district attorney’s office said.
Investigators determined Aalpoel provided Goodwin drugs containing methamphetamine and fentanyl, the district attorney’s office said. The
Washoe County, Nevada, Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the toxicity of those substances caused her death, the district attorney’s office said. Goodwin was found dead in her apartment Oct. 28, 2024.
The case was initially charged as second-degree murder and is the first homicide conviction in Modoc County based on providing drugs that resulted in a
death, the district attorney’s office said.
“We are very satisfied with the outcome of this case,” District Attorney Nina Salarno said in a statement. “My office is firmly committed to holding accountable anyone who causes the death or serious injury of another by giving or selling dangerous drugs.”
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Aalpoel
will receive six years of felony probation, with a sixyear state prison sentence suspended, the district attorney’s office said. He has been in custody at the Modoc County Jail since December 2024.
Judge Karen Dixon ordered a probation report. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2026, at 1 p.m. in Modoc County Superior Court.

A high-speed chase ended with the arrest of an Alturas woman Wednesday afternoon after she allegedly fled from law enforcement through multiple Modoc County communities.
At about 1:20 p.m. Jan. 14, a California Highway Patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Main Street in Alturas at approximately 65 mph, according to authorities. Multiple vehicles and pedestrians were present in the area at the time.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for
excessive speed, but the driver failed to yield, prompting a pursuit that continued south on U.S. Highway 395.
A witness near Jones Lane on U.S. 395 said the pursuit was alarming. “It was kinda scary seeing it happen,” the witness said.
The pursuit continued through Likely and ended on U.S. 395 just north of Madeline. The driver and sole occupant, identified as Lacy Marie Chacon, 44, of Alturas, was taken into custody.
Authorities said Chacon resisted arrest and sustained minor injuries during the incident. Emergency medical

Modoc Middle School
Students Tackle Underage Drinking
Friday Night Live West (FNL-West) Chapter youth leaders launched a bold initiative to bring together a powerful team of partners comprised of youth, parents, and alcohol merchants. The effort is led by members who seek to build strategic partnerships to reduce underage drinking and build safer, healthier futures for their peers. FNL-West is a youthled program that builds partnerships for positive, healthy youth development, engages youth as active community leaders, and generates resources to drive positive change on issues that matter to them.
The Modoc Middle School chapter’s multi-media campaign, designed and driven by youth, began with a monthly social media drive and a community invitation to partner with them last September. FNL leadership took action to disseminate their prevention project with a community presentation at the Niles Theater, a pledge drive at schools and filming a public service announcement. Unlike
traditional prevention projects, FNL positions youth at the center of change. It empowers them to work directly with stakeholders to raise awareness of current laws and regulations about underage drinking and to reduce the access of alcohol products to minors. Youth receive training on data collection, public speaking, creating public service announcements, and leadership and advocacy skills throughout the campaign. Although underage drinking rates continue to decline, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that alcohol remains the most used substance by adolescents. Young people’s lives are affected directly and indirectly by underage drinking, whether or not they drink alcohol themselves. Underage alcohol consumption increases the risk of motor vehicle crashes and interpersonal violence. Yearly, there are more than 4,000 alcohol-related deaths
for people under the age of 21 (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Alcohol-Related Disease Impact, 2022).
In February, leaders in FNL-West will visit local alcohol merchant partners to present certificates for their diligence in ID checks, displaying youth-created educational materials, and promoting responsible retail practices. Chapter leaders will also collaborate with parents in a pledge drive and support another PSAmovie event at the theater. When youth, families, and businesses join forces, real change can happen.
Harlyn Hinton, Modoc Middle School student and FNL-West leader, expressed her enthusiasm and her parent’s support to Coordinator Go Forth, saying, “I always have fun and my parents like me to be involved with lots of good activities. That’s why I go to school over here.”
As part of the campaign, FNL-West is encouraging participation in the Community Alcohol Survey (https://tiny.ucsf.edu/

Whether your goal is fresh produce from your own backyard or adding a personal aesthetic touch to your home with bountiful blooms, growing a garden offers many benefits. Gardening is more than a hobby; it is an activity that gets people outdoors, helps them learn new skills, provides exercise and may even foster family connections. Gardening also offers environmental benefits. Growing your own garden reduces your carbon footprint, encourages biodiversity, improves air quality and provides food for pollinators. Supporting pollinators, in turn, boosts the productivity of your garden and those around it. By growing their own plants, gardeners help cultivate a more sustainable future. Local gardeners will be available to answer questions and share advice. For more information, call 530-569-0060.
