Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I’m concerned about what I see happening to this country and what I can do about it. What’s happened to my health insurance? doubling and tripling along with diminishing social security? Why don’t we have decent, dependable health care like other countries? It’s a fact that millions of Americans travel to Mexico each year for prescription drugs and health care. Why do we suddenly have a secret police force tearing around the country terrorizing immigrant friends and their families, who mysteriously disappear without due process of law after living here 30 years? Why are we bombing and sending military strikes against other countries, which only cause terrible damage, kill people, resulting in hatred, while achieving nothing? Why are there so many lawsuits and threats attacking our free press and educational institutions? Where are the checks and balances between church and state established in the First Amendment? “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion.” and in which Jefferson and Madison both argued that paying taxes to a government supporting a particular (ie. Christian), religion, deprives others of their religious liberty. Why is the Supreme Court disregarding legal precedents? changing our voting rights, threatening the legitimacy of the Constitution? On and on. I find myself resorting to familiar maxims: “Do unto others…, Don’t throw out the baby…, Let your Conscio[s] be your guide” etc. etc. And, most of all, what can I do? Well, I can resort to one thing still left to me—contact my elected congressional representative. While you may not have the same concerns, we still have freedom of speech, last I checked. And, they tally daily what their constituents think and want them to do. So to give at least a minimum of peace of mind, I suggest if you’re worried as I am, in the privacy of your home, you can write, e-mail or call your elected leader. They listen and record each voters voice, letting them know our concerns and what we want them to do. Modoc Cheer Spreads Holiday Cheer at Mountain View

Modoc Cheerleaders spent time at Mountain View today for a holiday community service event, decorating cookies with residents and sharing conversation. The visit offered cheerleaders a chance to connect with residents in a meaningful way, listening to stories, spending time together, and bringing extra joy to the holiday season. When the girls were asked what their favorite part of the day was, many said it was

the residents themselves. One cheerleader said her favorite part was “how sweet the residents were and how they loved to listen to you about anything.” Another echoed the same sentiment, saying the residents were “just so sweet and just loving [to] all of us there.” Another cheerleader said her favorite moment came from seeing the impact of simply taking time to listen. “My favorite part about today was seeing the

residents smile and get happy when I was interested in their stories,” she said. Of course, there was one answer that made everyone laugh. “Eating the cookies!” one cheerleader added. The cookie-decorating visit provided a fun holiday activity for residents while giving the cheer team an opportunity to give back and spend time with members of the community.

The consequences of stalking can persist long after the behavior has stopped. Victims frequently struggle with a variety of significant difficulties.

Some challenges victims might encounter include: • Anxiety and hyper-vigilance • A persistent sense of fear, even in familiar and safe surroundings • Sleep disturbances and nightmares, which can often disrupt their sense of safety and calmness • Trust issues, making it difficult to establish new relationships and maintain current ones. In certain situations, individuals may encounter symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including flashbacks and emotional detachment. The constant sensation of being observed or trailed can result in considerable stress, impacting both personal and professional areas of life. The family moved to Stockton, California, and Mickey worked for the Production Credit Association for a few years; Michelson Sod Farm in Slough House, California; and then started Bunyard Sod Farm. In 1995, he bought property back in Surprise Valley and moved back to the valley where he always wanted to be. Mickey is survived by his devoted wife Bonnie; daughters Catherine (Bobby) Prasad and Michele Bunyard; brother John Bunyard (Susie); three grandchildren Shailee (Arron) Martinez, Charly Simpson, and Payton Burresch; four great grandchildren Erynn, Ayden, Asher, and Taylor Martinez; along with nephews, nieces and drear friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents and grandson, Devon Prasad. The Celebration of Life will follow at a later date.

Michael Gene Bunyard (Mickey), 76 years old, passed away on November 7, 2025 after courageously battling his illness. Born on May 21, 1949 to Bob and Mary Bunyard in Alturas, California, Mickey attended Surprise Valley School District for all twelve years and graduated from high school in 1967. Following high school, Mickey worked at the old Powers Ranch in Eagleville California for a short time. On April 6, 1968 he married Bonnie Parman at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alturas, California. Their marriage lasted for 57 years and blessed them with two daughters: Catherine and Michele. July 10 1968 Mickey was inducted into the U.S. Army where he did his basic training in Fort Lewis Washington. He then transferred to Fort Story Virginia, and then to Naha, Okinawa where he spent 18 months. He then transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado and

THE COMMUNITY MOURNS Tuesday morning, a statement was issued from LaMalfa’s official Facebook account, which detailed his legacy of service, leadership and kindness to the North State, in addition to the family he leaves behind. The post stated: “Early this morning, Congressman Doug LaMalfa returned home to the Lord. He leaves a lasting legacy of service, leadership and kindness to the North State. His humor and work effort are legendary - with one reporter once saying he’d look in the backyard of every BBQ just to see if Doug was there visiting. “Congressman LaMalfa cared deeply for the people he served and worked tirelessly to hold the government to its word, to fix our forest mismanagement, build water storage, and leave people to be free to choose what is best for themselves. His tragic and unexpected passing leaves a deep impact on many. He leaves behind his amazing wife, Jill, four children, one grandchild, two sisters and a hosts of cousins.” The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office stated in a Facebook post that LaMalfa faithfully represented California’s 1st District. The sheriff’s office stated: “The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our supporter and advocate for the rural way of life in Northern California, Congressman Doug LaMalfa, who faithfully represented

California’s 1st District. “Whether he was coming up for the county fair or holding town hall meetings to listen to and address our local concerns, Congressman LaMalfa consistently made the effort to be present and engage with our community. “We were truly fortunate to have his leadership and representation. “A principled conservative and dedicated public servant, he will be greatly missed. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jill, his family, and his staff during this difficult time.” Geri Byrne, the Modoc County supervisor posted on Facebook and stated: “Doug wasn’t just our representative; he was a dedicated advocate who never forgot the “Top of the State.” Whether in the halls of D.C. or at Modoc County Farm Bureau and Cattlemen’s meetings, he was present, boots on the ground, listening to our concerns. “Doug delivered for us where it mattered most. He secured land for local jobs, protected the SRS funding that supports our schools and roads, worked tirelessly on the Tulelake airport, and brought home the millions needed to upgrade Surprise Valley Electric. “Doug, thank you for always showing up for our 4-H and FFA kids, our firefighters, and our ranching families. We’re going to miss you at the table. Continue from page 1 confirmed the attack was caused by wolves, and due to the severity of Smoke’s injuries, our veterinarian was forced to humanely euthanize him.” Hanson later told the Modoc Record that he and his family checked their ranch on New Year’s Eve, including looking up the locations of collared wolves, and did not see signs the animals were close by. “We went out that night and looked around the ranch and looked up the locations of the collared wolves to see if we needed to remain vigilant,” Hanson said. “We did not see anything the night prior.” Hanson said the next morning, his family began their rounds at about 8 a.m., first finding the calf and reporting it to Wildlife Services. He said they then went to the next pasture to feed their horses and noticed Smoke was not walking up. “That’s when we knew something was wrong,” Hanson said. The sheriff’s office said deputies found blood and wolf tracks throughout a pasture adjacent to the ranch’s main residence, including near a children’s play area. The horse suffered a serious injury to its right hindquarter and was bleeding and still alive when examined, but deputies later were told it would likely need to be euthanized. Hanson said his veterinarian, Wayne Cockrell, later euthanized Smoke because of the severity of the injuries. Hanson said he was grateful for the response from Wildlife Services, McGarva and Cockrell. “Wildlife Services came out very quickly,” Hanson said. “I’m thankful to Wildlife Services, Sheriff McGarva and my veterinarian Wayne Cockrell for their help and support during this time.” The sheriff’s office said tracking software indicated wolves from the Harvey Pack were a short distance away in Rice Canyon the day before the Jan. 1 attack and “it is probable” the pack was responsible. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife was contacted and advised of the incident, the sheriff’s office said. A separate report of depredation was received

Jan. 3 at the Hagata Ranch southeast of the Willow Creek Ranch, where a calf appeared to have been eaten or violently attacked. That incident was also attributed to the Harvey Pack, according to the sheriff’s letter. Hanson said that calf belonged to his uncle, who lives nearby in Willow Creek Valley. McGarva said in his letter that Lassen County has experienced 45 depredations, with 42 confirmed to be caused by nearby wolf packs. He said most of the incidents have been attributed to the Harvey Pack, including seven kills in late October in the Termo-Grasshopper area of the county. He also said the Willow Creek Ranch owners have experienced 11 depredations. Hanson said wolves have been confirmed to have killed 10 of his cattle since November 2024, and that his family has tried nonlethal deterrents, including fladry, lights, sound devices and range riding. He said he would like more precise information about wolf locations so ranchers can better prepare. “If we know they’re close, we can do our range riding and do more to deter wolves from coming that night,” Hanson said. Since the incident, Hanson said his family has brought

their horses into corrals, increased nighttime riding, installed two sound boxes and continued monitoring wolf tracking information through the state wildlife website. He said the ranch had also experienced a calf loss in early December. Hanson said he has faced criticism from some who suggest ranchers should simply keep wolves off their property. “People say, ‘Keep the wolves off your property,’ but it’s not that simple,” Hanson said. “Wolves are highly intelligent. We don’t have a lot of information or resources on non-lethal controls, and we are sincerely doing our best.” “It is incredibly difficult to protect your livestock,” he added. “We are rural America. We live in vast places. We’re spread far out. Being everywhere at once doesn’t exist. That does not discourage us from continuing to try.” Hanson said ranchers play a critical role in the food supply and that his family intends to remain in the area despite the losses. “We grow and feed America,” Hanson said. “We are farmers. We are ranchers. We are not going anywhere.” Hanson said he hopes state wildlife managers will

expand monitoring efforts, including placing more GPS collars on wolves, so ranchers can better anticipate when packs are nearby and respond before attacks occur. He said having more accurate, real-time location information would allow ranchers to increase range riding and make more frequent rounds the night before wolf activity is confirmed close to homes and livestock. McGarva urged state officials to provide assistance and intervention, saying wolf

activity has increasingly occurred near residential areas as ranchers move livestock closer to home during winter. He also referenced earlier requests for intervention and called for allowing the state’s wolf management plan to be implemented “where necessary.” Gray wolves are protected under both federal and state laws, though McGarva noted in his letter that legislation is pending related to the species’ status.

Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits near Susanville, second strong quake in two days A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck late Tuesday near Susanville, California, the second strong quake in two days in the Willow Creek Valley area northwest of the city, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS said the earthquake occurred at 9:49 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, about 9 miles (14 kilometers) north-northwest of Susanville. The quake had a preliminary depth of 3 miles (5 kilometers). The earthquake follows a magnitude 5.0 quake recorded at 4:41 p.m.

The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) Lunch The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) receives lunches every Tuesday and Thursday at the Senior Center in Cedarville. Lunch starts at noon, but conversation starts around 11:30. If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley. We also have a potluck the 3rd Wednesday of every month. So come on down for some good food, conversation and laughs.
