Day of Action Organized to Save National Parks
By Janice Prince Betian
A Day of Action was held Saturday at the Tule Lake National Monument, formerly the site of the Tule Lake Segregation Center, where more than 30,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned during World War II.
The event was organized by the Tule Lake Committee, whose mission is to preserve and educate the public about the history of incarceration at Tule Lake, and the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), which is leading nationwide efforts to raise awareness about threats to the National Park System and to urge Congress to protect parks from drastic funding cuts.
Go Sasaki, who traveled from Boston to take part, was born in Oregon and had family members incarcerated at Tule Lake. He welcomed attendees and urged their support to preserve the site and protect other national parks.
Hiroshi Shimizu, a camp survivor, greeted about 75 visitors from as far away as Boston, San Francisco, and Idaho. “This is the home of the Modoc people,” he reminded the audience. “They were told they did not belong here.” He also asked
how many in the crowd had attended the Klamath Tribe Restoration celebration the previous day, and several raised their hands.
Shimizu described the “loyalty questionnaire” that was given to incarcerated Japanese Americans during the war. “Those who were unruly, disloyal, troublemakers were placed in Tule Lake,” he said, explaining how suspicion and fear even caused prisoners to turn against one another.
Although many of those imprisoned were U.S. citizens, they were told that if they were not happy, they could “self-deport.”
More than 5,000 signed to emigrate to Japan. Some later sought to rescind their decisions, citing coercion and duress, but the U.S. government refused to restore their citizenship.
Another survivor, Yiroshi Shimizu, shared that she was born in the Topaz internment camp in Utah. At six months old, her family was transferred to Tule Lake, and after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they were moved again to Crystal City Internment Camp in Texas, where she remained until age five.
Kay Sasaki of Klamath Falls spoke of her parents,

who were forced into Tule Lake before she was born.
The family had owned a prosperous farm but were ordered to leave with only what they could carry.
Her mother was a U.S. citizen, while her father, an immigrant from Japan, was deported. “The trauma of this left scars on Japanese American men, being
shipped from one camp to another. They were shaped by the experience… How horrific is that?” she said,

Modoc County jury convicts man in domestic violence case
A Modoc County jury has found a man guilty on multiple charges stemming from a domestic violence case, the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Adam Doig was convicted of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, a felony, as well
as misdemeanor counts of domestic violence and possession of a dirk or dagger. Jurors also found true an enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury during an act of domestic violence.
Doig was acquitted of other charges: misdemeanor vandalism, and an
additional felony count of criminal threats.
The case was prosecuted by Modoc County Assistant District Attorney Richard Cotta.
“We are proud of the courage shown by the victim in this case. Coming forward is never easy, but it is vital to holding offenders
accountable,” District Attorney Nina Salarno said in a statement. “This verdict sends a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in Modoc County. I commend ADA Cotta for his commitment to victims of domestic violence.”
Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.

Main Street Honors Service as Veterans March in Modoc County Fair Parade
Carrying the nation’s colors and ceremonial rifles, AJ Harris (Army), Amber Provart (VFW Auxiliary), Commander Sean Provart (Army), Junior Vice
Commander Randall Betian (Navy), Josh Bowers (Navy), and Commander Edwin Allert (Air Force) marched at the front of the procession. As the group
advanced, the National Anthem was sung, drawing the crowd to its feet in tribute to local veterans and service members.

At this year’s Modoc County Fair, fairgoers were greeted by two well-known fire safety mascots riding along with BLM Fire — Smokey Bear, the U.S. Forest Service icon who has reminded generations that “Only YOU can prevent wildfires,” and Sparky the Fire Dog, the National Fire Protection Association’s friendly Dalmatian who teaches children and families about fire prevention. Together, they brought smiles, photos, and an important reminder about protecting our homes, communities, and forests.

Claude Fred Singleton Jr.
June 14, 1947 – July 7, 2025
Claude Fred Singleton Jr. was born on June 14, 1947, in Reedley, California, to Elma and Claude Singleton Sr. He was the beloved brother of Walter and Ray, who preceded him in death.
Growing up, Claude and his brothers shared a deep love for the great outdoors, spending countless hours fishing, camping, boating, and hunting.
After high school, Claude married Diane and moved to Eureka, California, to attend Humboldt State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology. Following graduation, the couple briefly lived in Los Angeles, where Claude pursued his passion for horse racing. His love for “betting on the ponies” continued well into his retirement.
Claude’s journey took him to Oregon and Susanville before he finally settled in Alturas, affectionately known as the “Big A” to Claude. It was in Alturas that Claude truly felt at home.
Claude dedicated 43 years to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), retiring in 2021. He was a passionate advocate for public lands and often spoke to local school classes to inspire interest in public service. Among his many accomplishments, Claude was particularly proud of the Cedar Creek Restoration Project in Likely, California. This project, which focused on restoring stream banks and improving livestock grazing areas, combined his love for education and conservation.

Time for a star-studded celebration!
Free Dark Sky Fest is Sept. 13 in Cedarville, CA
August 25, 2025 - Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Bureau of Land Management Applegate Field Office are once again inviting the public to come out for some amazing stargazing at the annual Dark Sky Fest. It’s free and for the entire family!
The annual event is an opportunity for stargazers of all ages and abilities to come out for a day of learning, creating and gazing skyward. Cedarville is a quaint and picturesque town nestled just west of the Massacre Rim International Dark Sky Sanctuary, officially one of the darkest places on the planet. It’s the perfect place to gather for the day and on into the night to learn more about the value of dark skies and why it’s important to protect them.

elementary students in planting willows along Cedar Creek, an effort that garnered recognition from the Izaak Walton League, a conservation organization, and widespread media coverage.
Claude’s dedication to natural resources extended to his work in recreation, wildlife, and interpretation on public lands. He also contributed to the fuels and wildlife program, creating quail nesting sites from fallen juniper trees, which he fondly called “nesting donuts.” His passion for local history led him to design and place interpretive signs across the BLM Applegate Field Office area.
Claude’s enthusiasm for BLM’s mission was evident to all who knew him. He loved discussing conservation, especially while out in the field. A true nature lover, Claude cherished his German Shepherd dogs and several cats. He was an avid collector of guns, bottles, cans, matchbooks, and stamps, and enjoyed tying his own flies for fly fishing.
Claude and his friend Chuck frequently went fishing and camping together.
Claude was well known by many, and his close friends considered him family. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday September 6th at 1pm at the Cal Pines Lodge in Alturas. Claude’s favorite lunch will be served. Please RSVP by calling the BLM Cedarville Office at 530.279.2712.
“We encourage folks from the more urban areas of northwest Nevada and northeast California to take the scenic drive to Cedarville to see for themselves what they’re missing back home,” said Friends Executive Director Shaaron Netherton. “The proliferation of artificial light has literally blinded us to a truly dark sky and what it reveals to us. People are amazed by the sheer number of stars they can see and the awe-inspiring impact it has on them.”
The more adventurous folks can also spend time in or around the Sanctuary over the weekend, as long as they follow some basic guidelines for venturing into the back
country, such as having the proper vehicle, satellite communication and/or a good paper map and snacks and water. And don’t forget a good beach towel or blanket for stretching out and becoming awestruck at the endless stars above.
The day-long activities on Saturday, Sept. 13 include:
10am-2pm: Starry Skies Science Fair in the garden at the Country Hearth Restaurant at 551 Main St. in Cedarville
There will be information about starry skies, astronomy, and our solar system; fun art projects and activities for kids and adults!
7pm - 11pm: Stargazing Party at Modoc County Fairgrounds

at 1 Center St, Cedarville, with the Astronomical Society of Nevada and Star Chaserz Mobile Observatory
Starting with night sky trivia, and story-telling, then moving into telescopes set up for viewing deep sky wonders like galaxies and nebulas; stargazing binoculars; and programs on constellations and night sky navigation. The event will be held regardless of sky conditions. Find out more about the event and RSVP at https:// www.nevadawilderness. org/2025_dark_sky_party.

CHP Seizes 3,650 Pounds of Marijuana During Traffic Stop in Northern California

A routine traffic stop at an agricultural checkpoint in Dorris, California led to one of the region’s largest marijuana seizures.
The California Highway Patrol’s Northern Division said an officer stopped a 25-foot Penske box van on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025, for an investigatory check.
Inside, officers found 194 large moving boxes and two landscape trash bags filled with marijuana. The haul weighed about 3,650 pounds, all in unprocessed form. The
marijuana was seized as evidence, CHP said.
The driver, Ifsmel Martinez, 36, of Corning, was arrested on felony charges of transporting marijuana across state lines and possession of marijuana, according to CHP.
Authorities did not release information about where the shipment originated or was headed.
Officers continue to monitor trafficking routes and remain alert for suspicious activity on state highways, the agency said.

Betting On Our Future at State Conference

Youth leaders from RISE (Resources for Indian Student Education) participated as Ambassadors and workshop presenters during a Statewide conference held at the CSU, Chico campus on August 12-14, 2025. Ambassadors serve the conference sessions, escort speakers and guests, support the Student of the Year and present awards during the event. Thomas and Samuel Anguiano, along with Talise and Saiya Fernandez were four of the six Ambassadors to the 2025 California Conference on American Indian Education.
Surprise Valley High School graduate Rena Linton was awarded 2025 Student of the Year at the event. Linton received a plaque, necklace and Pendleton blanket at her robing, and she will receive a scholarship upon enrollment in her veterinary courses.
RISE-MESA Advisor Ingunn Ringvold and Linton’s family attended the evening banquet and awards.
One of the five workshops that were presented by RISE teams was Rollin’ with Resilience. It was sponsored by The California Endowment to advance awareness regarding a rise in adolescent gambling, problems gambling in all ages, and connections to mental health issues. At the beginning of the workshop, participants were unable to distinguish between gambling and risktaking. After involvement in discussion, games and videos, participants had a better understanding of the differences. Youth in the BOOF (Betting On Our Future) project, Jada and Samira Go Forth, and Brodie and Dylan Mudron, presented the full workshop alongside the Friday Night Live Advisor, Leah Mudron.
BOOF is a Friday Night Live campaign that empowers young people as advocates for change regarding underage gambling. The team created awareness of current facts
that included California has the most Indian gaming casinos in the Nation, and a National Indian Health study found that many children reportedly gambled at least once as young as 8 years old. When considering the various forms of addiction, gambling addiction has the highest rates of suicide. Emphasis was drawn to prevention of problem gambling and illegal underage gambling. Thirtysix workshop participants earned a BOOF tee shirt by testing their learning with a team game of Password. Mudron has gained approval to continue a Friday Night Live (FNL) Chapter at Modoc Middle School in the new academic year. Alturas Elementary students successfully represented their desire to continue FNL, and they have several activities planned.
Information about FNL may be received by calling RISE at (530) 233-2226.

describing the shame felt by many Japanese Americans despite their innocence.
Michelle Hui, a high school student from Klamath Falls, also shared her family’s connection to Tule Lake through her grandmother. “I believe she told her stories because she didn’t want that history to be erased,” Hui said. “If it could happen here… if it could happen in Ukraine, it can happen anywhere.”
The gathering concluded with a display of 3,000 paper cranes, created by participants to honor those who endured incarceration. Attendees posed for photos to memorialize the occasion. Organizers stressed that the event was not only about remembrance but also about advocacy. The proposed 2026 federal budget includes an unprecedented $1.2 billion cut to the National Park Service—the largest in its history. Such reductions could eliminate more than 5,500 full-time positions and, according to the NPCA, potentially force the closure of up to 350 of the 433 national park sites.

Keeping Fair Tradition
At the Modoc County Fair, one of the most beloved traditions is the annual antique engine exhibit hosted by Robert and Rosemary Thompson of Bieber. Now 91 and 90 years old, the Thompsons continue to share a piece of living history with fairgoers. Their collection of engines—many of which powered local farms
more than a century ago— draws curious onlookers year after year. Crowds gather as Robert cranks up a 1919 mealand-flour grinder, purchased from the Montgomery Ward catalog for just $12.95, and the old machine sputters to life, a reminder of both the ingenuity and the grit that shaped Modoc County’s farming past.

Braves still seeking first win after Cup F, SCL opener losses
Modoc went 0-3 at the Cup F tournament, falling to Butte Valley, Tulelake and Weed.
The Braves’ goals came from Mackenzie Diven, Trustin Thomas, Maya Taylor and Axel Salazar.
Modoc opened Shasta Cascade League play Aug. 26 at Butte Valley, firing 19 shots on goal in a tightly contested match. Goalkeeper Easton Knight turned in a standout performance, while defenders Sam McCandless, Andres Lopez, Tallon Young and Caelan Hughes held strong. Despite the effort, the Braves were held scoreless and dropped the game in overtime on penalty kicks.
Modoc next travels to Tulelake on Sept. 3 before hosting Paradise Adventist in its home opener Sept. 8.

NTEK Water Protectors
On August 13, 2025, at the California Conference on American Indian Education held at California State University, Chico a team of Water Protectors from RISE led an interactive workshop on proactive water preservation and conservation. Paul Steele, Peer Consultant, presented with the team of Saiya and Talise Fernandez, and LeeAnne Craig from the RISE NTEK (Native Traditional Environmental Knowledge) project.
The team shared aspects of their project in a power point that included information on their BLM research, CA Tribal Water Summit work, and national Great Basin Anthropological Association presentation. It featured their first Water Festival with learning activities, booths and cultural experiences for the community to learn the importance of water protection and conservation.
LeeAnne Craig, Modoc Middle Schooler, highlighted a community contribution of growing traditional, drought resistant plants that were later given away. Their active support of the sacred site of Medicine Lake contributed to the 2025 National Monument Executive Order of the Sáttítla Highlands, located near Mount Shasta.
Surprise Valley High Schooler Saiya Fernandez taught, “Three-fourths of our Earth is covered in water. So

that old adage ‘Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink.’ is pretty accurate.”
Craig pointed out how everyone must be responsible with the small amount of fresh water available to us, saying, “Three percent of Earth’s water as fresh; but wait, 70% of that small amount is frozen in glaciers and ice caps!”
All cultures around our Earth equate water with healing and energy. It is the first medicine, one of the four elements of life, and water must be respected and protected. In CA, getting water where it is needed is a constant challenge from climate and geography.
Steele expressed that too often people take water for granted. He explained that everyone needs clean and healthy water, adding, “The United Nations expects five billion people will have water shortages by 2050. That makes every one of us responsible for protecting and conserving water.”
One of the workshop activities required identifying the ingredients of a good hamburger sandwich. Then estimates of much water was required to produce that hamburger. Talise guided participants in realizing that it takes nearly 700 gallons of water to grow the ingredients for that sandwich.
Workshop participants were pleased to receive a Water Protectors tee shirt, provided by a grant from the EarthWays Foundation.

The shirt displayed cultural water symbols with dozens of Native languages for the word ‘water’. Creek Flow Report: Modoc County Watermaster Service

The Modoc County Watermaster Department has released updated creek flow measurements for key waterways in its service area. These reports provide insight into local water conditions and highlight the ongoing changes in creek flows as summer progresses.
Report from Monday, August 18
As of last week, notable creek flows were recorded as follows:
Davis Creek: 6 cfs
New Pine Creek: 5.5 cfs
Pine Creek (Alturas): 12 cfs
Emerson Creek: 5.5 cfs
Soldier Creek: 4 cfs
Eagle Creek: 4 cfs
Cedar Creek (Surprise Valley): Dry
Mill Creek (Lake City): 3 cfs
Bidwell Creek: 4.5 cfs
Cottonwood Creek
(Surprise Valley): 4 cfs
Rader Creek: Dry
North and South Deep Creeks: Dry
These measurements underscored the variability in local stream systems, with several creeks already running dry by mid-August.
Updated Report from Friday, August 22
Later in the week, updated numbers showed further decreases across several creeks, signaling the impact of ongoing dry summer conditions:
Davis Creek: 5.5 cfs
New Pine Creek: 5 cfs
Pine Creek (Alturas): 7 cfs
Emerson Creek: 5 cfs
Soldier Creek: 3.5 cfs
Eagle Creek: 4 cfs
Cedar Creek: Dry
Pine Creek (Surprise Valley): Dry
Shields Creek: 3.5 cfs
Bidwell Creek: 3.5 cfs
Cottonwood Creek: 3 cfs
North and South Deep Creeks: Dry
Observations
Between August 18 and August 22, most creeks experienced measurable declines in flow, with Pine Creek (Alturas) showing the most notable drop—from 12 cfs to 7 cfs in just four days. Smaller decreases were also observed in Soldier, Bidwell, and Cottonwood Creeks. Meanwhile, dry conditions persisted in Cedar, Rader, and the Deep Creeks, and Pine Creek in Surprise Valley also recorded no flow.
These reports demonstrate the sensitivity of Modoc County’s waterways to seasonal changes and the importance of ongoing monitoring for water users and land managers.
