First 5 Modoc’s Early Learning and Resource Hub recently received a playground upgrade through support from Modoc County Public Health.
The improvement aligns with approved Modoc County Public Health SNAP-Ed program interventions, serving as an environmental support for physical activity. The installation of Fibar engineered wood fiber chips creates a safe, accessible surface that supports SNAPEd policies, systems and environmental strategies aimed at increasing healthy lifestyle opportunities in lowincome communities. The upgrade provides a safer, more inviting environment for families with young children.

Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the

Denim Day Brings a Global Message Home to Alturas

What began as outrage in Italy has grown into a worldwide movement—and today, that message is being carried forward right here in Alturas.
Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.
The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties.

It’s been quite the transition since March 29, 2024 - two years ago, when we sold the Modoc Record business. Thankfully, the Record - our county-seat weekly, continues, when so many other newspapers are barely surviving or have died.
Rick and I believe, all of us would be unhappy to live in a “news desert” - without a local newspaper. But with Modoc’s unique geographic location, it could happen.
Most folks like to get something for free. But, the costs behind “free”, are anything but! The truth is, it’s advertising dollars that keep it free and pay for production, newsprint, printing, as costs increase, delivery with the outrageous price of fuel and California’s Labor costs. The cost of doing business is more now, than when we sold this business.
Reality is - Without necessary advertising dollars, a newspaper ceases to exist - no local news or history to document life’s milestones, events, death notices and obituaries, our kids’ sports, accomplishments, legal public notices, features, classified ads, a chance to express our thanks, concerns, support and opinions.
Now that we have fewer businesses than in the past to advertise, it gets even tougher. From past years of experience, we’ve seen new businesses open and close within six months to a year because many relied solely on Facebook or other free online entities to “spread the word,” or they just waited for someone to walk through their doors. But making that choice takes support away from any local newspaper. We get it, everyone is trying to save a buck. But not everyone chooses to use Facebook or online entities in this area.
Regardless of how you feel or think about the Modoc Record today, in some small way you can help prevent Modoc County from becoming a “news desert”- a place without any local news at all. Whether it’s by purchasing an online subscription, placing a display of any size, advertising your skills or business in the business directory or classifieds - it all can help your business and keeps the Record going.
Just think about it . . . The Modoc Record is currently “free”but it takes communities who care, to keep it going, give input and help it improve.
Rick and I are relieved that a new, young owner, Thomas J. “TJ” Montemer, with his new and progressive ideas, chose to invest in the Record two years ago, so we could retire. He continues to produce and publish our local newspaper. By no means is this an easy weekly task! And the future of newspapers is not a given these days.
On Jan. 30, 2026, Rick and I sold the lovely landmark Modoc Record office building at 201 West Carlos St. in Alturas. We thank our local Realtor Sandy Stevenson and our local Chicago Title & Escrow for their expertise. Before selling the commercially zoned building, we applied to the City Planning Commission, seeking to add a residential zoning variance. They agreed, so it can now become a residence and still retain the commercial zoning, should it ever be needed.
For research about anything Modoc - The Modoc Record past lives on in safe keeping at the Modoc County Library, now protecting the bound archived volumes, microfilm (dating back to 1892) and CDs through 2024, plus boxes of negatives, photo prints, (late 1970s-2000) in a climate controlled room of its own.
Our gratitude goes to Librarian Kris Anderson who willingly accepted the collection, keeping it all available to the public. Kris and Library Tech II Andrew Wilton, physically moved the hefty shelving, irreplaceable history and living plants from the 1937 Record building to the Alturas Library.
Our gratitude extends to Cal Vada Museum, Candi Maidens and Museum Board members, for accepting several Record historic items, now located at the new CalVada Museum. With its quality displays, CalVada is home to impressive historic collections and research materials, located on Cedarville’s Main Street in a beautiful brick building with tall arched windows. Cedarville was once home to the “Surprise Valley Record” before it was purchased and equipment moved to Alturas, to become the all encompassing Modoc County Record.
Why didn’t we give everything to the Modoc County Museum in Alturas, you may wonder? The Alturas museum is filled to capacity with treasures, including the original newspaper Linotype machine on display there and other historic Record photos on file. They simply had no space for our items.
We hope this information will be helpful to you in the future. We encourage you to help keep the Record a part of Modoc County.

FedEx Truck Crash on Highway 299 Sparks Small Fire
An accident involving a FedEx delivery truck occurred on April 7, at approximately 2:39 p.m.
According to CHP, Anthony James Earle was driving a 2015 Ford EC3 eastbound on state Route 299, east of McKenney Drive, at about 60 mph as he approached a curve.

Earle, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. He was taken to Surprise Valley Hospital as a
precaution.
Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
According to Cedarville Volunteer Fire Department personnel, the struck power pole arced and started a small tree fire that was quickly contained and extinguished.
The 5th Annual Denim Day Awareness Walk will take place on April 29 at Modoc High School from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event brings together a wide range of community agencies taking a stand against sexual violence, including the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office, TAY Center, TANF, Sunrays of Hope, Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, Modoc Medical Center, Public Health, RISE, Alturas Police Department, Advancing Modoc, Pit River Health, CASA, and Plumas Bank. Participants will walk laps around Modoc High School track, earning prizes based on the number of laps they complete. More importantly, each step represents a shared commitment to raising awareness and supporting survivors.
Denim Day reminds us that sexual violence is not confined to large cities—it exists everywhere, including rural communities. By participating, Alturas residents send a clear message: clothing is never consent, and survivors are not alone.
On April 29, a simple pair of jeans—and a walk around a track—will stand for something much bigger.
Braves roll to victory at Spring Breakout Tournament
The Modoc High School baseball team won the inaugural Spring Breakout Tournament.
The Braves battled through more rain than sunshine, earning victories over Mazama, Loyalton, Burney and Henley. The tournament provided valuable preparation for league play.
Coach Lewis and his staff expressed gratitude to the parents, community members, supporters and volunteers who helped make the tournament possible.
Lewis said the team performed well throughout the tournament.
“Our pitchers threw strikes, and our hitters had great
approaches at the plate,” he said. “We only allowed eight runs in four games and scored 30. It’s a nightand-day difference from the beginning of the season to now.”
He added that the tournament provided valuable preparation for league play.

Vicente Fernandez, the Athletic Director for the Surprise Valley High School, traveled to Riverside, CA this past week to attend the California State Athletic Directors Association Conference (CSADA). He spent a week attending workshops and networking with other ADs throughout the state. When you are a full time teacher and live in our rural community, it is sometimes difficult to have conversations with other ADs and even vendors about their programs. Mr. Fernandez has been the AD for Surprise
Valley High School for 11 years and has built a very successful program. He puts hours of his own time into attending meetings for the Evergreen League, where he has served as league president for the past two years, and the Northern Section. He also works closely with staff when working on schedules to make sure they are not overlapping over events for our students. He strives to encourage our student athletes to conduct sportsmanship and remain respectful during athletic events. Our volleyball team has received the

Edward James Conlan
Edward James Conlan, 76, of Fort Bidwell, California, died April 8, 2026, at Warnerview Skilled Nursing Home in Alturas after a long battle with cancer.
Edward was born June 9, 1949, in Alturas, California, to Jack and Nora Conlan and was raised on the family ranch in Fort Bidwell with six siblings. After graduating high school he went to Ashland, Oregon, where he performed and worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival– a lifelong love of theater that continued in later years with community theater in Julian, California.
Edward’s passions included cooking, painting and drawing, and collecting antiques. He loved creating art and writing poetry throughout his life, and was known for his quick wit and enjoyment of visiting with friends and family. He worked as a chef at Tom’s Chicken Shack in Santa Ysabel and at Romano’s in Julian before spending many years working as a convenience store clerk in Palm Desert. Upon retirement he returned to the family home in Fort Bidwell, living there until his health declined and he moved to Warnerview Skilled Nursing Home, whose staff his family gratefully thanks for their care.
He was preceded in death by his parents, jack and Nora Conlan; sister Joan Marie Ethen; brother John Conlan; and sister Marietta Glaus. He is survived by sister Nora Lea Krupp of Modesto, California; sister Anne Marie (Mike) Carey of Boulder, Montana; brother Patrick Conlan (Rick Green) of Oakland, California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
Jennifer Lee (Benner) Vermillion
Jennifer Lee (Benner) Vermillion, 59, of Palo Cedro, California, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born April 25, 1967, to John and Wendy Benner in Susanville, California, Jennifer grew up in Cedarville, California, where she met and married her husband, Loren and where she would eventually open The Little Hair Shop as a cosmetologist for 13 years.
In 2003, Jennifer, Loren and family, moved to Palo Cedro, and Jennifer became a registered nurse at Mercy Medical Center for 17 years.
Jennifer was a fiercely loyal, loving, force to be reckoned with; determined and passionate in all aspects
traveling, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.
Jennifer is survived by her husband Loren, their daughters Monica (husband Alex Maier) and Brittany (husband Kenny Pietrobono), and grandchildren Ava and Vivian Maier (age 4) and Jackson Pietrobono (age 3) as well as her parents John and Wendy, and sisters, Angela Main and Paula Macgregor.
Services honoring Jennifer will be held April 25, 2026 in Cedarville, California at the Modoc Co. Fairgrounds, Four Seasons Building, at 12pm. All are invited to share in the celebration of life; guests are welcome to contribute a dish to share.

Fire Crews Prevent Spread in Calpines Blaze
On April 13 at 4:14 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to a burning camp trailer on Spring Road in Cal Pines. The Cal Pines Fire Department and CAL FIRE responded.
When crews arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed and located directly next to a second trailer. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the first trailer, preventing it from spreading to nearby vegetation. The second trailer sustained minimal damage.
Tragically, three dogs were killed in the fire. An attempt was made to rescue them before crews arrived, but despite those efforts, they could not be saved.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Regional Presentation Day

On March 28, in Fort Jones, CA was the Regional 4-H Presentation Day.The 4-H members that participated were from Lassen, Modoc, Siskiyou and Shasta counties. About 25 4-H members attended from these four counties and participated in at least one public speaking contest.12 members were from modoc county, 8 being from the Surprise Valley 4-H Club. Members participated in giving demonstrations, prepared speeches, interviews and impromptu speeches. All of the members received a blue or gold placing, which allows all members who participated in the regional presentation day to move
on to the state competition on May 23rd at UC Davis. The regional director said this was the first time she had ever seen all of the

Brody Olive’s Journey with Type 1 Diabetes

For most middle school athletes, basketball is just a game. For Brody Olive of Alturas, it has been something much more—it has been a lifeline.
Brody, a local middle school student, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease, following heart surgery. His family believes the condition may be linked to COVID.
The diagnosis brought new challenges, but it did not take away his determination to live a full and active life.
Despite managing a serious medical condition, Brody continues to thrive on the basketball court, playing for his school team and staying active alongside his peers.
“Basketball saved his life,” said his mother, Tammy Preston. “It gave him something to focus on and helped him keep going.”
Each year, Brody attends Camp Howard in Corbett, Oregon—a five-day camp that brings together about 75 children living with Type 1 Diabetes. There, campers are supported by a team of doctors, nurses, endocrinologists, nutritionists, and counselors, many of whom live with the disease themselves.
The camp also welcomes professional athletes, including former NBA player Chris Dudley, who helped start the program and serves as an inspiration to campers.
The experience is made possible through generous donations. The Modoc Lions Club has supported Brody for three consecutive years, helping ensure he can attend camp. Additional community donors also contribute, making it possible for
children like Brody to participate without financial burden.
At first, Brody was unsure about attending. “I was nervous at first,” he said. Camp rules require campers to give up their cell phones, encouraging them to rely on each other and fully engage in the experience. But that initial uncertainty quickly faded. “They made me feel self-reliant. Now I feel like it’s a second home. It’s really magical,” Brody said. “It’s hard at first when you don’t know anyone,” he added.
Now in his third year at camp, Brody looks forward to returning each summer. Campers can attend until they are 18 years old, and many return as counselors, giving back to a program that once supported them.
At Camp Howard, kids who face daily medical challenges get the chance to simply be kids—playing sports, building friendships, and gaining confidence.
And thanks to the continued support of organizations like the Modoc Lions Club, that
opportunity remains within reach—helping young people like Brody build strength, independence, and hope for the future.

The Modoc County Department of Social Services is accepting bids for the removal of outdated Packaged Units and Split Units currently installed at 120 N Main St. Alturas, CA 96101 and the subsequent replacement of these systems also to be installed at 120 N Main St. Alturas, CA 96101. The project goal is to improve indoor air quality, temperature control, and to reduce energy consumption.
The winning bidder will be responsible for providing all labor, materials, tools, and supervision to complete the following tasks:
• Assessment of Existing HVAC: Inspect current configuration to ascertain any changes needing to be made during the installation of new equipment to ensure maximum efficiency and greatest control of temperature zones within the building
• System removal: Disconnect and remove the existing HVAC units, including associated electrical wiring, piping, and mounting hardware. The contractor must dispose of all old materials off-site.
• Equipment installation: Install all new equipment, including new high-efficiency rooftop package units, split units, ductwork, thermostats, and controls. The equipment must be sized based on load calculation for the specific building.
• Ductwork: Inspect existing ductwork for integrity and size compatibility. Perform any necessary repairs, modifications, or replacements. Seal all duct connections to ensure no leakage.
• Controls: Install new digital, programmable thermostats and controls. Integrate new controls with the existing building automation system, if applicable.
• Commissioning and testing: Start up and test the new system to ensure proper function and performance. Perform any necessary balancing and adjustments.
• System handover:
Provide an operation and maintenance manual for the new system. Train on-site staff on the proper operation and maintenance of the new controls and equipment.
All bids must be sealed. The bid must include the total amount along with itemization of the following:
• Cost breakdown: A detailed list of costs for all labor, materials, equipment, taxes on parts/supplies needed to complete the project scope, fees associated with the removal and disposal of existing refrigerant along with any new fees associated with the purchase of new refrigerant required for new units.
• Project timeline: A proposed schedule for project completion, including start and end dates.
• Proof of qualifications: Copies of all relevant licenses, insurance certificates (general liability and workers’ compensation), and contractor references.
• Warranty information: Details on equipment and labor warranties.
• Expiration Date: Date all prices, terms, and conditions become null and void.
Bids may be mailed or hand delivered.

In Alturas, that effort is led by the dedicated members of the VFW Auxiliary, who organize community blood drives every six weeks. Their commitment ensures that residents have regular opportunities to contribute to this vital need.
Jean Atkins, who coordinates the drives, says the impact goes far beyond the numbers.
“Every unit of blood represents someone taking the time
to help a stranger in need,” Atkins said. “It’s a simple act, but it truly saves lives, and our community continues to show up in such a generous way,” noting that a total of 38 local residents rolled up their sleeves to donate blood at the last blood drive.
The next opportunity to donate will take place on May 19th, when community members are once again encouraged to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.
