our best with integrity and honesty. One of our biggest accomplishments is getting our shop back open after Hurricane Ian. Between damage to the shop and our staff’s homes, it was not easy. We were, due to help from our wonderful staff, able to get back open within a week and half after the storm. We worked with generator power and started the cleanup. Very quickly we had customers coming in with boats damaged from the storm. Still doing some repairs at the shop, we are finally getting boats back to customers all fixed up and ready for the summer boating season. With our Captain Tony Towns at the helm, we keep moving forward with helping the community recover and come back stronger. We did lose staff after the storm and it took a lot of determination to keep working through jobs. Through long days and hard work with the remaining staff, we were able to work through the back log of jobs we had after the storm. Staffing has been an issue for several years now. We just keep pushing and have managed to hire one new staff member to help us keep moving forward. We look forward to continuing to serve this great community and keeping our customers enjoying the waterways. Thank you,

In search of purpose, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving for over 23 years and rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Throughout my military career, I dedicated myself to my country while earning a Bachelor of Science in Management and a Master of Business Administration in Global Management.

After retiring in 2004, I transitioned into corporate human resources, leveraging my counseling skills to become the Director of Training for a prominent Fortune 500 company. Without the continuous love and support that we receive from our community we wouldn’t be where we are today. Cooking has been a passion since a very young age, I taught myself how to cook with many years of trial and error.

I am one of 14 kids, and with a family that big, comes a lot of independence. With lots of patience, advice, and obviously some great family recipes from my mother, as well as from my wife and her family, I learned my way around a kitchen.

After graduating from Lemon Bay High School and the University of South Florida, Chris was excited to start working in his hometown while studying to attain his CPA license, which he accomplished in 2010. He has spent the last 17 years assisting Englewood residents and small business owners, not only with their taxes, but all aspects of their finances. Now that he’s started Dutery + Co., CPA in 2020, he’s looking forward to growing his career and continuing to serve the community he has called home for the last 27 years.

What Men Should Know About Prostate Cancer

Health-conscious adults recognize the importance of staying on top of health-related issues, and that may involve educating oneself about certain diseases with the hope of understanding and reducing individual risk. For men, recognition of important facts about prostate cancer can help them better understand a disease that the World Cancer Research Fund International reports is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men.

• The Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Foundation report that one in eight men in the United States and Canada will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.

• Men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than they are melanoma and cancers of the colon, kidney and stomach combined.

• The PCF estimates that more than three million men in the U.S. are currently living with prostate cancer.

• The risk for prostate cancer increases considerably as men age. According to the PCF, roughly 60 percent of prostate cancer cases are found in men over the age of 65.

• Men who have a father, brother or son who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer could be twice as likely to develop the disease.

• The CCS reports the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer among men in Canada was 91 percent in 2022. By contrast, the five-year survival rate for all cancers in the same year was 62 percent. The American Cancer Society reports that the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer in the U.S. was 97 percent between 2012 and 2018.

• The PCF notes that prostate cancer often produces no symptoms, which underscores the significance of prostate cancer examinations. The ACS reports that the prostatespecific antigen (PSA) blood test is used mainly to screen for

prostate cancer in men without symptoms. Men are urged to speak with their physicians about testing for the disease, even if they are symptom-free.

The ACS indicates such a discussion for men who are at average risk for the disease should occur at age 50, while the MD Anderson Cancer recommends men open a dialogue with their physicians beginning at age 40.

Prostate cancer is a common yet treatable disease. Men are urged to educate themselves about prostate cancer and discuss prevention with their physicians.

David was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Public Environmental Affairs from Indiana University. He spent many years in Chicago, where he raised his two children, David and Ella, while managing his family’s business, HP Products. After the company was sold to Ferguson Supply in 2014, David relocated to Sarasota, Florida.

Hello Englewood, another year has passed, and our little community has suffered not just 1 but 2 terrible hurricanes. Many of us have still not fully recovered from Hurricane Ian. Hurricanes Helene and Milton really pushed the limits of our small town. I pray that we have an uneventful hurricane season this year.
