topping to let a gopher tortoise cross the street, driving by a group of wild pigs on a busy road, watching dozens of pelicans in a feeding frenzy as dolphins swim offshore...these are just a few of the scenes you can expect to encounter in the Englewood area. A wide variety of birds and animals call Englewood home, all or part of the year. They are a source of fascination and entertainment to residents and visitors. This is a place where you can see bald eagles soaring in the morning sky and a bobcat in your neighbor’s yard at dusk.

SEA TURTLES

The loggerhead sea turtle weighs between 155 and 375 pounds and averages about three feet in length. Ninety percent of the nests found in the U.S. are in Florida and the Englewood area is a particularly popular nesting spot. Sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 to October 31, when female loggerheads lumber up on shore and lay their eggs in the sand before returning to the water. Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers mark and track the nests with yellow wooden stakes and neon tape. When the nest hatches, the hatchlings scamper across the beach and into the Gulf of Mexico. The Coastal Wildlife Club, www.coastalwildlifeclub.org is an excellent source of information. The loggerhead is classified as a threatened species, and the green turtle, which also nests on our beaches but is much rarer, is endangered. Just 1 in 1,000 loggerheads survive to maturity. The U.S. Endangered Species Act and the Florida Marine Turtle Protection Act protect sea turtles. Regulations limit the amount of artificial light homes and businesses can utilize on the beach, and prohibit leaving large items like yard furniture overnight in nesting areas. Sea Turtle Ordinances in Charlotte, Lee, and 2025

APRIL 15 – OCTOBER 31

• DO move any and all chairs, trash barrels, and large toys from the beach at night so the turtles don’t get stuck in them while approaching the beach at night to lay their eggs. • DON’T leave lights on near or on the beach at night. They confuse the hatchlings and cause them to crawl inland instead of the Gulf once they've hatched • DON’T interrupt or move a turtle laying her eggs. • DO fill in any holes on the beach, or flatten out large sandcastles so the hatchlings don’t get trapped while trying to crawl towards the Gulf after hatching. • DON’T use flashlights, lanterns, or flash photography on the beaches at night with turtles around. Lights disturb nesting turtles and hatchlings, causing them to become disoriented as they make their way into the Gulf. • It’s against the law to touch or disturb nesting sea turtles, hatchlings, or their nests.

DO’S & DON’TS DURING TURTLE NESTING SEASON

Manatee Sarasota counties are available from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission at www.myfwc.com.

MANATEES

This gentle giant, sometimes called a sea cow, is Florida’s state marine mammal. These wrinkly gray and brown herbivores can grow to 10 - 12 feet long, weigh about 1,000 pounds and can live up to 60 years in the wild. They like warm, shallow waters and communicate with squeaks, squeals, chirps and clicks. Manatees are slow swimmers and are threatened by increases or decreases in water temperatures, destruction of their habitat, and inattentive boaters. The manatee is on the threatened species list and their populations are constantly monitored. Learn more at www. myfwc.com.

FISH SPECIES

Florida has over 250 different species of freshwater fish. Most of the species are non-native, meaning there are very few truly native Florida fish. Families include black bass, catfish, gar and American eel. Some species are threatened and are constantly monitored by government organizations, while others are either restricted or prohibited from being fished. There are over 1,000 species of saltwater fish in Florida’s waters and most are edible. More than 40 of those species have their harvest regulated, and some species have 8

game fish status, meaning they can’t be sold. Species include flounders, groupers, grunts, jacks, tunas, mullets, snappers, snook, redfish, swordfish, shrimp, and many more. In addition, there are also several shark species in our waters, including hammerhead and nurse sharks, but you’re more likely to find fossilised shark teeth on the beach than encounter a shark in the water. Again, www.myfwc.com is your go-to place for the most up-to-date information on fish regulations and fishing calendars.

DOLPHINS The most common species of dolphin living in Florida waters is the bottlenose dolphin. These playful marine mammals grow to be 6 to 12 feet long and can live into their 50s. Their diet consists of fish and some invertebrates. They are intelligent animals that have a wide range of vocalizations and cooperate well together. If you go boating, they may just follow you, playing in the wake behind your aquatic vehicle. If you don’t want to rely on luck, many tours in the area specialize in spotting dolphins. It seems like everyone who visits Florida wants to see an alligator. You are most likely to see them sunning on the banks of a canal or possibly on a golf course, or you might just see the top of a gator’s head skimming the water. Whatever you do, don’t get close and keep your pets away IMAGES

from any area frequented by alligators, and don’t feed them, as it is dangerous and illegal.

Nine-banded armadillos are not native and look like small anteaters wearing armour. Their rooting and burrowing damage lawns. They are most active in the evening and have poor eyesight and hearing, so watch for them when you’re driving at night. Also not native, and more dangerous to pets, are coyotes. Relatively new to Florida, these predators snatch small animals, so unless you are in a densely populated area with no woods, be extra careful when you walk your pets at night. A whistle is an effective way to scare them. It is rare to spot a fox, bobcat, whitetailed deer, wild turkey, wild boar or river otter, but they’re all in our area. However, there’s nothing more rare than spotting a Florida panther. Today there are only around 200 of these elegant felines left in the wild.

FLORIDA BIRDS Many different birds call our area their home or their vacation home. While flamingos are not native to this area, they can sometimes be found. You are much more likely to see roseate spoonbills, as well as pelicans, egrets, ibis, white and blue herons, sandhill cranes, osprey and majestic bald eagles. On the beach, you might see tiny sandpipers hopping along the waterline, seagulls eyeing your lunch and numrous shore birds that nest on our beaches from February through the end of summer. Blue herons and egrets often wait 2025

Dolphin playing with food. patiently for the spoils from people fishing from the shore. Brown pelicans will fight for those fish, splashing loudly when they dive into the water. Your backyard could be home to mockingbirds, bright red cardinals, noisy woodpeckers, tiny hummingbirds or maybe the Florida scrub jay, which is protected under both state and federal law. Sandhill cranes, traveling in families or pairs, can be found loping across the street or grazing in your yard. And look up to that light tower, or if you’re on the water, the channel markers, and you might see an osprey nest. If you develop an interest in birds, contact the Venice Area Audubon Society at www. veniceaudubon.org for information on special events and bird walks in the area.

NATIVE PLANTS According to the state of Florida, a native plant is a plant species that is presumed to have been present in Florida before European contact. Exotic or invasive are terms most often applied to major nonnative pest plant species. An interesting fact: Florida has more native trees than any other state except Hawaii. One of the most photographed trees in our area is the banyan tree. These grand trees form canopies along Manasota Key Road and on the aptly named Banyan Street in Boca Grande. The Southwest Florida 11

Nobody forgets the first time they see a gopher tortoise cross the road. This species is threatened and federally protected. region is also home to the majority of Florida’s red, black and white mangroves, and the buttonwood. These tropical trees grow along the shore and are crucial to many aquatic species. They are protected by local and state regulations. Other trees common to the area are slash and spruce pine and the laurel and diamond oak. The invasive Brazilian pepper tree is an especially troublesome species. Contact with it can cause a nasty skin reaction.

Englewood is also home to many fruit bearing trees. The lemons, grapefruit, key lime, oranges, papaya and mangoes on your table could come from trees in your own backyard or from down the street at local markets.

Sea Grapes thrive in the area's hot sandy soil.

Flowers you will find here include the classic beach sunflower, orange canna lily, bromeliads and hibiscus of all colors, and many more. If you want to know more about planting a garden or are just curious about the plants and trees you see every day, visit the Florida Native Plant Society website at www.fnps.org. You can join the local chapter at www. mangrove.fnpschapters.org or you can join the Lemon Bay Garden Club at https:// lemonbaygardenclub.com. The UF/IFAS Extension is a valuable resource for those looking for gardening help, https://sfyl.ifas.

Florida Birds Great Blue Heron

Osprey

The Great Blue Heron is the tallest of the wading birds. It can be commonly seen standing in shallow water, watching for fish to eat. Blue/grey in color with a white head, black stripe above the eye, and a yellow bill. Often solitary, they can sometimes be found with large flocks of other waders at fish concentrations. Great blue herons rarely venture far from bodies of water, but are occasionally seen flying over upland areas.

The Osprey is large with long, narrow wings that are bent at the elbow. It is brown above and white below. Its head is mostly white with a prominent dark stripe through the eye. The soles of its feet have rough pads that allow the bird to grip slippery fish, which it often carries in its talons as it flies to its perch or nest. A common sight locally, it frequently uses utility poles or channel markers as platforms for its large nest.

Florida Birds Great Egret

Roseate Spoonbill

Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other White Egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet. The Great Egret was once almost extirpated from North America by plume hunters. It feeds alone on fish, frogs, and snakes in shallow water. It can often be found standing on mangrove prop roots. The Great Egret nests in colonies with other species of herons on rookeries.

Named for its wide, spoon-shaped bill, the Roseate Spoonbill feeds by sweeping its head through the water in a side-to-side motion, straining small fish, crustaceans and insects. It is pink with red eyes. Spoonbills are typically crepuscular (dawn and dusk) feeders. Historically common throughout Florida, the spoonbill population was decimated in the early 1900’s by plume hunters.

Florida Birds Brown Pelican

Double-Crested Cormorant

The Brown Pelican has a large, stocky, brown body including a massive bill and throat pouch. The non-breeding adult has a yellowish-white head and neck. The back of the neck of breeding adults is chestnut brown. Young birds are mostly brown. The Brown Pelican is listed as endangered in many states and threatened in Florida. Pelicans can commonly be seen gliding across the water, diving for a meal, or soaring high overhead.

The Double-Crested Cormorant is a large black bird with a hooked bill adapted for catching fish. It has an orange throat patch during breeding. It is an expert swimmer and diver. The Double-Crested Cormorant is common year-round and roosts in large numbers at the local rookeries. Frequently it is seen perched with wings spread outward.

Florida Birds Royal Tern

White Ibis

The Royal Tern is a seabird with a redorange bill and a black cap during the breeding season, but in the winter the cap becomes patchy. The Royal Tern is found in Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean islands. The Royal Tern lives on the coast and is only found near salt water. They tend to feed near the shore, close to the beach or in backwater bays. The Royal Tern’s conservation status is listed as least concern.

The White Ibis is a commonly seen bird in and is often the most numerous bird at the mangrove rookeries. Ibises are solid white, with black wing tips that can be seen when in flight. Ibis have long pink or orange legs, a bald face, and a long, downward-curved bill that is well suited for probing in the mud for small crustaceans or worms.

8570 Manasota Key Road 941-861-5000 www.sarasotacountyparks.com The furthest north of the public beaches in Englewood, this 21-acre park offers access to the beach and the bay. A cement boat ramp, as well as a dock on the Intracoastal Waterway side of the park makes this an ideal spot for boaters. Shelter space is limited so it’s a good idea to reserve in advance. There are restrooms, paved walkways, a ramped dune walkover, beach showers, seating, updated pavilions and picnic areas, pedestrian boardwalk and docks. Popular Local Animals Manatee

Bottlenose Dolphin

One of Florida’s most popular animals would have to be the Manatee. Measuring up to 13+ feet long and weighing as much as 1,300 lbs, manatees are herbivores and eat over 60 different freshwater and saltwater plants. Their “gentle giant” qualities makes them quite loveable to watch. Manatees inhabit the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon basin, and West Africa.

Right along with the Manatee in the population poll would have to be the Bottlenose Dolphin. Playing in the wakes of the many boaters in Florida, they tend to pop up when least expected. Bottlenose Dolphins inhabit warm and temperate seas worldwide, being found everywhere except for the Arctic and Antarctic Circle regions. The Bottlenose Dolphin can weigh between 330 and 1,430 lbs.

Florida Panther

Bobcat

The Florida Panther is a North American cougar in South Florida. It lives in pinelands, tropical hardwood hammocks and mixed freshwater swamp forests. It is known under a number of common names including Florida Cougar and Florida Puma. Adult female Florida panthers weigh approximately 64-100 lbs, whereas the larger males weigh 100-159 lbs. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to development remains the biggest threat to the Florida Panther through poaching and wildlife control measures.

The bobcat is also known as the red lynx. It has distinctive black bars on its forelegs and a black-tipped, stubby (“bobbed”) tail from which it derived its name. Its coat is variable, though generally tan to grayishbrown, with black streaks on the body and dark bars on the forelegs and tail. It’s spotted patterning acts as camouflage. The ears are black-tipped and pointed, with short black tufts.

Popular Local Animals American Alligator

Loggerhead Sea Turtle

One Florida native you must be cautious of would be the American Alligator. Found pretty much anywhere in Florida where there is a water source and vegetation nearby. These creatures are not to be trusted and should never be approached by humans. Measuring between up to 15 feet in length, they can weigh up to 1,100 lbs. They eat fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and an occasional golf ball.

SWFL beaches are well known for their nesting seasons of Loggerhead and Green sea turtles. “Turtle Season” runs from April 15 to October 31. Females return to their nesting beach every two to three years to lay an average of 4 clutches. An average sea turtle will lay 80120 eggs per nest, and average between 2 to 8 nests in one season. Sadly, only an estimated one in 1,000 will survive to adulthood.

Popular Local Animals Gopher Tortoise

Ghost Crab

Gopher Tortoises are native to the southeastern United States and are well known for digging long deep burrows. On average, these burrows are 15 feet long and 6.5 feet deep, but can extend up to 48 feet in length and 9.8 feet deep. Gopher tortoises are herbivore scavengers, opportunistic grazers and consume a very wide variety of plants. On an average, Gopher tortoises can live more than 40 years.

Ghost Crabs are common shore crabs that live in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. These crabs inhabit deep burrows in the sand. The name “ghost crab” derives from their nocturnal and their generally pale coloration. They have thick and elongated eyestalks, and a box-like body, and are capable of gradually changing body coloration to match their environment and the time of day.

Popular Local Animals Green Iguana

Anole Lizard

The Green Iguana is a large lizard and is probably the largest species in the iguana family. Adults typically grow to 4-6 feet in length from head to tail. When frightened by a predator, Green Iguanas attempt to flee, and if near a body of water, dive into it and swim away. If cornered by a threat, the Green Iguana extends and displays the dewlap under its neck, stiffens and puffs up its body, hisses, and bobs its head at the aggressor.

Anoles are lizards that range is size from 1.5” to 4” in length. They are typically green or brownish, but their color varies depending on the species and many can also change it. In most species at least, the male has a dewlap, a brightly colored flap of skin that extends from the throat and is used in displays to attract sexual partners. They primarily feed on insects like flies, crickets, caterpillars, butterflies, ants and spiders.

owerboats and pontoons, sailboats, kayaks, canoes and SUPs...you’ll find them and more on the many waterways in the Englewood area. If you don’t own your own boat, you can rent a kayak for a paddle in the local estuaries or explore the Gulf on a fishing charter with one of the area’s experienced boat captains. Florida ranks number one in the country for adult anglers. It seems that everyone you meet in Englewood has a story about the one that got away or the one that didn’t, and soon you will too. If you like to stay on dry land, there are enough golf courses to keep you swinging every day! Tennis players will find excellent courts in several public recreational sites, and there are also facilities at many clubs, as well. Pickleball has become very popular and courts can be found with many of the tennis courts.

BOATING

Boat owners who don’t launch from a private dock will need to find a public boat ramp and there are many in Charlotte and Sarasota counties.

Biking has become very popular axctivity since COVID. in Florida, and nearly as many smaller, unregistered boats. With all that company in the water, it helps to: • Know your boat, the equipment, controls and load capacity. • Obey signs and notices regarding vessel speeds. Be aware of all restricted areas. • Pay attention to the weather, it can change quickly. • Make sure that someone knows where you plan to go and how long you will be on the water. • Always wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket and have your passengers wear one too. All children 5 and younger must wear a life jacket in any vessel under 26 feet. • Keep a flashlight, first aid kit, drinking water and sunscreen in watertight containers on your boat. FISHING

Fishing is without a doubt one of the most popular recreational activities in our area. Far offshore swim grouper, cobia, blackfin tuna, and yes, sharks. In the waters closer to land are snook, redfish, mangrove and red snapper, sheepshead and many more. Boca Grande is known as the tarpon fishing capital of the world, attracting anglers from all over the globe. Lakes are home to several species of bass, crappie, sunfish, bluegill and more. It’s important to know that just because you catch it, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to keep it. There are very specific regulations on which fish you can take home and which have to go back in the water. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) lists species as endangered, threatened and species of special concern. Of course, what you really want to know is “Where are the fishing hot spots in Englewood?” That depends on what you’re looking for, the time of year and especially who you ask. Go to www.myfwc.com or call 888347-4356 for rules, regulations and license information, as there are many instances where you do not need a license to fish in Florida. You can get an instant license online at www.myfwc.com, from the Charlotte and Sarasota County tax offices, or from most bait & tackle shops and hardware stores. Insider Tip: To get the real deal on where to angle in Englewood, stop by the monthly meeting of The Englewood Fishing Club. Check their calendar at www.englewoodfishingclub.net.

Florida Fishing Snook

Redfish (Red Drum)

Renowned for their elusive nature and powerful fights, Snook are a prized game fish in Southwest Florida. Target them from March to November when they migrate from backwaters to nearshore areas. Live bait, such as pilchards or shrimp, is a favored option. Additionally, artificial lures like jerkbaits, swimbaits, or topwater plugs can entice strikes from these feisty predators. Snook are currently catch-and-release only.

Redfish, known for their fighting ability and delectable meat, can be found throughout the year. Their peak seasons are fall and spring when they actively feed in shallow waters. Cut bait, and live bait, such as shrimp or pinfish are effective choices. Anglers also find success using artificial lures like jigs, spoons, or topwater plugs, especially around submerged grass or oyster beds. Redfish are currently catch and release only.

Trout

Sheepshead

Trout, commonly known as Speckled Trout, are a favorite among anglers. They can be targeted year-round, with peak seasons in the cooler months. Seek sheltered areas from October to February for the best chances of success. Live shrimp is a go-to bait, while artificial lures, such as soft plastic jigs, jerkbaits, or topwater plugs, can also entice strikes. Focus on grass flats, oyster bars, and drop-offs for fruitful trout fishing.

This flat, oval fish has dorsal and anal fins that are rounded towards the slightly forked caudal (tail) fin, and its greenishsilver body is striped with five or six dark vertical bars. It grows to almost 30 inches and 22 pounds, eating invertebrates, small vertebrates, and some plants. They prefer inshore areas around jetties and piling, or in brackish waters around mangroves and estuaries. They are a prized food fish, and are also popular in public aquariums.

Florida Fishing Grouper

Mahi-Mahi

Southwest Florida offers exciting grouper fishing opportunities throughout the year, with peak seasons in the cooler months. The most common species include Gag Grouper, Red Grouper and Black Grouper. Live bait such as pinfish, pilchards, or threadfin herring are effective, whether used for trolling or bottom fishing. These powerful fish will test your skills and provide a rewarding catch.

Mahi-Mahi have compressed bodies and one very long dorsal fin extending from the head almost to the tail fin. Mature males have distinctive “foreheads”; it grows as the fish matures and often protrudes well above the body proper, which is streamlined by the musculature of the back. This “hump” is a sexually dimorphic feature; females have a rounded head. Mahi-Mahi is a very popular fish for eating.

Florida Fishing Snapper

Spanish Mackerel

A variety of snapper species inhabit the waters of Southwest Florida, providing an excellent opportunity for reef and bottom fishing. Snapper fishing can be enjoyed year-round, with popular targets including Mangrove Snapper, Lane Snapper, and Red Snapper (during open seasons). Cut bait, such as squid or shrimp, as well as live bait like pinfish or pilchards, along with bottom fishing rigs, yield great results.

Spanish Mackerel are a fast and aggressive species, offering exciting action for anglers. While they can be caught year-round, their peak seasons are spring and fall. Trolling with spoons or flashy lures at a fast pace is an effective technique. Live bait such as pilchards or shrimp can also entice strikes from these voracious feeders.

Tarpon

Florida Bass

SWFL is well known for its quantity of Tarpon located in the area waters. The Tarpon is hugely popular in Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island where yearly fishing tournaments are held, (catch & release only). Tarpon grow to about 4–8 ft long and weigh up to 280 lbs. Tarpons possess shiny, silvery scales that cover most of their bodies, excluding the head. They are very exciting to catch, if you are able to reel this strong fish to the boat!

The Florida Bass is a fresh water fish that resembles the largemouth bass in that it has an elongatedw body that varies in color from a silvery-white to brassy-green and sometimes to a pale brown in murkier waters. The Florida Bass was thought to be restricted to Florida, but a phylogenomic study found that it was widespread in coastal river systems of the southeastern United States from Florida north to the Cape Fear River in North Carolina.

nglewood is known for its collection of charming and unique, small, locally-owned businesses. It is not uncommon when you sit down at a restaurant, that the owner will be the one to greet you. The shopkeepers are warm and friendly and are used to catering to locals, as well as our vacationing/snowbirding clientel. You will find the stores carry everything from souvenirs, nautical themed home decor, upscale fashionable clothing to handmade jewelry and art. With all this variety to choose from, you are bound to find just what you are looking for!

SHOPPING HISTORIC DEARBORN STREET The new streetscape on West Dearborn Street is fresh and exciting. It is one of the most popular destinations, and is the historic business district. In season, be sure to stop by each Thursday to Pioneer Plaza where there are wonderful Farmers Market filled to the brim with vendors and their tents full of all kinds of wonderful items. There are food trucks and vegetable stands and live entertainment.

LEMON BAY PLAZA Located in the north part of Englewood on SR 776 you will find Lemon Bay Plaza. It is currently not filled to capacity, but has a UPS store, Rumours Wine Bar, Libee's Sports Bar, Bay Fit Club, Kyle Kurtis Salon, Aura Boutique, Reids Health Foods and more.

PLACIDA ROAD AND CAPE HAZE Traveling down Placida Road will take you through Grove City into the Rotonda/ Cape Haze area. Discover the home décor, gift, restaurants and specialty stores tucked into the business and retail malls.

DINING

Whether you are picking up some freshly prepared take-out for a quick meal at home or the beach, meeting with friends for breakfast or lunch, or celebrating a special occasion, you will find a restaurant that offers just what you’re craving. Especially in season, you should either make reservations or call ahead, as there may be a significant wait at the most popular restaurants. In September, watch for

evenings, about one hour before sunset, everyone is invited to the Drum Circle on Englewood Beach. You can participate by bringing a percussion instrument, hula-hoop or by dancing along. However, many people just bring chairs or a beach blanket and enjoy watching. It’s a good idea to check the weather on the Drum Circle Facebook page (@Englewood Drum Circle - Official Page) before you go, as the drum circle is weather permitting. Cruisin’ on Dearborn is held the first Saturday of each month from approximately noon to 6:00 pm on West Dearborn Street. Collectors show off their antique cars, hot rods, muscle cars and more, while hundreds of enthusiasts come out to appreciate and reminisce about the vehicles.

Over the past few years, Englewood, like much of the nation, has experienced significant shifts in the real estate market. Various factors, including rising insurance rates, increasing property taxes, and fluctuating interest rates have contributed to a slowdown in market activity. The two years prior to this shift were marked by an unprecedented buying frenzy, during which time many individuals achieved their housing goals in a highly competitive environment. However, the recent market cooling has allowed for a more balanced approach, helping housing inventory grow while putting some pressure on home prices. This softening in prices, coupled with the slowdown in buyer activity, has brought the market to a more sustainable pace. Buyers are now taking a more relaxed approach, carefully considering their options and waiting for the right fit. As inventory continues to build, we are seeing renewed buyer confidence, with many feeling relieved to have a broader range of pricing and housing options available. This increased selection is gradually drawing more potential buyers back into the market. The beginning of the year has shown a significant uptick in pending sales, indicating a strong season ahead. We are seeing that our seasonal visitors are once again enjoying everything Southwest Florida has to offer, from boutique shopping and dining, to outdoor adventures, cultural events, and the stunning natural beauty of the Gulf Coast. As of December, 2024, the average home price in Englewood was $358,176, 2025

reflecting a 6.5% decrease over the past year. Homes are taking just over 30 days to go under contract and sell easily when they are competitively priced and in desirable condition. Buyers are increasingly seeking value, but they remain willing to pay fair market prices for properties that meet their needs and expectations. Although inventory levels continue to rise, a steady flow of pending and closed sales signals strong demand. People remain eager to call Southwest Florida home, drawn to the area’s warm climate, relaxed lifestyle, and welcoming community atmosphere. Despite market fluctuations, the appeal of Englewood ensures that real estate activity will continue to grow. The resilience of Englewood residents has been nothing short of inspiring. In the aftermath of recent storms, rebuilding efforts have brought in newer, stronger homes designed to withstand future challenges. Many existing properties have also been upgraded with new roofs, impact-resistant windows, and reinforced doors, significantly enhancing safety and durability. Looking ahead, the community is staged for continued success and growth. Englewood’s unique blend of small-town charm, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community make it a desirable location for those seeking a coastal lifestyle. Whether it’s firsttime homebuyers, retirees, or seasonal residents, the market continues to cater to the diverse range of individuals eager to experience all that our beautiful area has to offer.

William Goff (1845-1919) was a sea captain before he came to the Lemon Bay area. He and his brother Dempse, along with their nephew Jim, worked the land in Vineland. William is credited as being the first settler in the Englewood area, arriving in 1878.

The original plat of Englewood was filed on August 17, 1896 by the Nichols brothers. The small lots in the center were home sites while the large lots were for citrus groves. All the streets were 20 feet wide.

Did you know shells are made by the soft bodied animals that live inside them? Shells are made by some types of mollusks, which are soft bodied animals such as snails, slugs, or mussels. Most shells are made by either a gastropod – meaning “stomach-foot”, aka snails; or a bivalve– a two-sided shell like a clam. The shell is made of calcium carbonate (chalk) secreted by the organism, and the shell is continuously growing as the organism grows. Two sided bivalve shells, such as clams, are held together with a hinge that usually breaks apart after the creature dies, which is why you often find only one side of a shell. They use gills that filter water and function both as lungs and as a mouth for finding plankton and debris in the water to eat. Their shells are made from calcium in the water which they make into a glue to add on to the edge of their shell, expanding it a little more with each layer as they grow. Snails grow their shells similarly, adding on layer by layer to enlarge the shell. The small sharp spiral end was the original shell when the snail was a baby. As the snail grows it added more and more calcium glue to the opening of the shell and makes it larger. Most snails feed using a long straw like tongue with a sharp file at the end. They use this tongue to either scrape algae off other shells, or, more often, to drill through the shells of other mollusks. Once they have drilled through the shell, they inject stomach acid to dissolve the critter inside its shell, before using their tongue to slurp their victim out like soup. Keep an eye out for shells with perfectly round little holes in them when you are shelling! See the Englewood Shell Club at: https://englewoodshell.club INFORMATION GATHERED AT WWW.RISINGTIDEFL.COM

SWFL Shells Lightning Whelk

Calico Scallops

Florida Fighting Conch

The only left-handed shell in Florida, lightning whelks are predators that eat clams and other bivalves by drilling a hole into their shells. They also use the sharp strong edge of their shell to shuck open clams. Lightning whelks have beautiful brown and orange zig zag lightning bolt stripes, and can grow up to 16 inches.

The beautifully colored and highly variable calico scallops are one of everyone’s favorite shells to collect. They can be almost any color, including red, orange, yellow, purple, pink, white, black, and every combination of the above. Did you know scallops can swim through the water by opening and closing their shells and pushing water through?

These shells are abundant on our SW Florida beaches and are usually in very good shape because they are thick, but can become weathered because it takes time for the shell to wash up to the tide line after the snail dies. The baby fighting conch shells are a slightly different shape than the adults, and shellers can confuse them for cone snails.

Banded Tulip

Sunray Venus Clam

Horse Conch

These shells are one of the most These pretty striped shells can be found on the beaches and beautiful and pleasingly shaped shells found on our beaches. Their mudflats of SW Florida and can color varies from red-orange, to often be found with both halves pink, to a blue purple. The snails still attached. Like the cockle, live in the bays and mudflats, they live buried in the sand and but after they die their shells soft mud, often in estuaries, wash up on the beaches. They where they filter feed and help are beautiful when they are alive clean the water. There is talk of because the body of the snail is making the Sunray Venus clam a black with tiny white dots like the new aquaculture crop in Florida because of their similarity to milky way galaxy. conch meat.

The state shell of Florida and a fan favorite because they grow so huge - up to 26 inches! The Horse Conch is a fierce predator and can be found in the mud flats eating clams and other gastropods. The Horse Conch is very fun to find when it is alive because the body of the snail is bright orange.

SWFL Shells Moon Snail

Apple Murex

Olives

Often called the Sharks Eye for its mesmerizing blue colored iris - mimicking spiral, it can in a matter of only ten minutes, drill a perfectly round hole into the shell of its prey, such as small clams or other snails, and eat the soft flesh. They often eat several per day. They are also referred to as the necklace shell.

These shells are well known for their interesting spiny, frilly, and lacy ridges. The Apple Murex is the most common murex on our beaches, and they are usually a soft tan orange color. Many murex eat oysters, giving them the nick name the "oyster drill". Most murex snails have a special purple gland that was used to make purple dye in Mediterranean cultures.

Olive Snail shells are smooth, shiny, elongated oval-shaped shells. They are carnivorous and feed mostly on bivalves and carrion and are known as some of the fastest burrowers among snails. The shells often show various muted but attractive colors, and also may be patterned.

Junonia

Cockle Shells

Turkey Wings

One of the most sought after, hard to find shells in SWFL, this shell is greatly prized for its beauty and apparent rarity. Its milky chamber is covered with brown spots on the outside, and the animal that occupies the shell is likewise marked. Because of its deepwater habitat, the shell usually only washes up onto beaches after strong storms or hurricanes.

A cockle is an edible marine bivalve mollusk. Sometimes mistaken for a scallop, the distinctive rounded shells are bilaterally symmetrical, and are heart-shaped when viewed from the end. They tend to be around 2-4” in size. Behaviorally, cockles live buried in sediment and are capable of “jumping” by bending and straightening their “foot”.

The shell of a Turkey Wing is boldly striped in brown and white which gives it a resemblance to the wing of a wild turkey. This shell tends to be a little over two inches long, oblong, with one side more or less straight. The whole shell (when both valves are together) has also been likened to Noah’s Ark. Usually easily found on SWFL beaches.

SWFL Shells Coquina

Jingles

Arks

These are one of the smaller and most common bivalve shells you will find on the beach. Coquinas live buried in the sand and soft mud, extending their siphon into the water to breathe and filter feed. They often live close to shore, so the empty shells wash up in good condition. Scoop up a handful to feel them wiggle downward.

Most often, only the top half of this translucent pastel - colored shell is found. The bottom remains in the ocean, stuck to whatever hard surface it was growing on - such as a rock or another shell. Jingle shells are filter feeders that help clean the water. Jingle shells are popular for making wind chimes because of the pleasing sound the shells make when they clink together.

Very common on Florida beaches, these are actually a type of clam. The ponderous ark has a black, mossy coating on the shell that wears off as the shell is tumbled in the surf. When arks are alive, many species anchor themselves with thin strong spider-web-like strands called byssus to rocks or corals. In the Gulf, many ponderous ark shells are found with false sea fans attached to them.

Calico Scallop

Sand Dollar Shells

Cone Shells

These average 1-3 inches in diameter and are thin, strong shells with an almost translucent appearance. Their shiny shells are often found in shades of white, yellow, brown, and black. They tend to stay in shallow waters. These shells can measure about the size of your hand. They are found all along the Florida coast all year long.

Did you know that sand dollars are a species of sea urchins? They got their name due to their bleached skeleton resembling old American and Spanish dollar coins. Live sand dollars play an important role in the marine ecosystem. They are often red or purple in appearance and spend their time burrowing along the ocean’s floor to feed on microscopic algae and bacteria.

Cone shells (from the Cone Snail) are easily identified by the distinctive cone-like shape and a long aperture that reaches up to their shoulder. These snails prefer to live on sandy bottoms in shallow water. They are often found around shallow reefs. They come in various sizes and colors and are very prominent on our SWFL beaches.
