8 Injured in Brentwood-Area High-Rise Fire
One person in grave condition By Sam Catanzaro
A 25-story high rise on Wilshire Boulevard near Brentwood caught fire Wednesday leading to multiple injuries, one of two fires in a threeblock radius Wednesday morning. According to Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) spokesperson Brian Humphrey, the fire was reported January 29 at 8:37 a.m. at a 25-story residential high-rise complex know as Barrington Plaza located at 11740 Wilshire Boulevard. A total of 335 LAFD personnel responded by ground and air, and were assisted by the nearby Santa Monica Fire Department, LAPD Los Angeles Police Department and allied agencies in successfully managing the incident.
The fire’s cause remains categorized as “suspicious” by the LAPD and remains the focus of an active investigation. The wind-driven fire was extinguished one hour and 19 minutes after it was first reported. There were eight civilian patients, most suffering from smoke exposure. Six were transported to a local hospital, including one person who was in grave condition, according to the LAFD. “Despite reliable eyewitnesses vividly describing one or more persons ‘jumping’ from the 6th floor, we surmise that such person/s may have appeared, disappeared (returned briefly inside) and returned to the building’s exterior in an area heavily charged with smoke, leading the eyewitnesses to believe they had jumped rather than temporarily retreated into the building. It is likely the jumper/s in question was the man later safely rescued by an

Low-Income Housing Comes to West LA By Jeff Hall
A new housing development that will provide affordable housing to low-income individuals – including some who are currently homeless – is now underway in the neighborhood. A ground-breaking for “Missouri Place” was held Jan. 16 at the southeast corner of Missouri and Bundy, between Santa Monica Blvd. and Olympic Blvd. This is the site of the former West LA Animal Shelter. Brentwood’s Tom Safran, whose Tom Safran & Associates firm is known for high-quality public housing projects, is the property manager. 74 units will be built on the site, which is close to parks and public transportation, includ-

Several speakers acknowledged 74 units won’t solve the problem of homelessness in Los Angeles, but stated Missouri Place will make an important contribution. Mayor Eric Garcetti said homelessness will be solved one individual at a time but noted 14,000 units for currently homeless individuals are now in development. Mike Bonin noted that getting low-income housing built can be challenging because, in
This was not the case with Missouri Place, according to Bonin. He said West LA is a community that knows how to say “yes.” He also stated having Tom Safran as the developer is a good thing: “If Tom is doing a project in your area, you know it’s going to be damned good.” Assemblyman Richard Bloom talked about how long a journey it has been to get municipalities to do enough about housing. He was mayor of Santa Monica at one time, which has experienced persistent homelessness. Today he is more hopeful than ever, he said.
