Potential Life Sentence for Wrong-Way 405 Crash “Horrific night” for first responders By sam Catanzaro A man faces life in prison for driving the wrong way on the 405 Freeway and killing a driver near Brentwood during what an LAFD spokesperson described as a “horrific night” over last weekend that saw two fatal wrong-way crashes. According to the California Highway

Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred on the 405 Freeway north of Getty Center Drive on Sunday around 2:30 a.m. Authorities say a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck traveled up to four miles the in wrong direction going southbound in the northbound lane before crashing into a Jaguar. The driver of the Jaguar, 43-yearold Joey Allen, died on the scene. The driver of a third vehicle involved in the collision also was injured, prosecutors said. On February 20, the Los Angeles County District Attorney (DA), announced that

the driver, Antonio Marco Abrego faces one felony count each of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury. The case includes allegations of causing great bodily injury and/or death and refusing to submit to a chemical test. Bail is set at $2.1 million. Abrego faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged. The case remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, West Los Angeles Station. The 405 crash was one of two wrongway crashes reported that evening. Another wrong-way crash occurred on the 210 Freeway in Monrovia two hours later. A woman traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the freeway collided head-on into a pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. In a Reddit thread, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Firefighter and Specialist Public Service Officer Brian Humphrey described the evening as “horrific” “It was a horrific night on Los Angeles area streets and freeways, with multiple deadly crashes, including those involving at least four wrong way drivers and/or headon collisions. While cause investigations continue, driver impairment is strongly suspect,” Humphrey wrote. Humphrey went on to describe the task of delivering death notifications to family members of the deceased. “Walking up the driveway to a house in moonlit darkness, there is nothing but the empty sound of leaves or gravel beneath your feet, punctuated by the inevitable deep breath and long exhale of those in your group who are equally dreading their duty. on the site and construction crews anticipate work will be done within weeks, allowing the facility to open in early March,” reads the newsletter. Once complete, the site will include two 40’ x 120’ tension membrane structures and modular trailers, which will be located within the VA campus near existing buildings and services. The site will offer roughly 100 beds for currently homeless veterans, as well as storage for residents, personal hygiene and laundry facilities, supportive and community engagement services, and 24-hour security. This bridge housing facility will be temporary — and not to be visible from the exterior of the campus — as the VA constructs

out its Draft Master Plan, which will provide 1200 units of permanent supportive housing on the campus. The facility was expected to open in early 2019, but crews experienced a delay on the site when they uncovered old pipes that needed special attention as the site was prepared for the temporary structures. In addition, mud from a rainy winter and asbestos that was discovered hindered the project. Across the street at the West Los Angeles National Guard Armory, the federal government has approved plans to build a bridge housing center there for non-veteran homeless individuals in the area.

Fingers Crossed: Will the New Voting System Work Well? Founding Publisher The new voting centers will be open from February 29 through March 3. One preliminary reaction I have is that Brentwood’s two primary voting centers – Village Lutheran Church on Church Lane and Luxe Sunset Hotel – are really not in mainstream Brentwood. Both locations are to the far eastern edge of Brentwood – and fairly close to one another. I’m not sure why anyone would pick two locations so close to one another. Moreover, in order to get to the Lutheran Church on Church Lane, or to the Luxe Sunset at the corner of Sunset and Church, most of us will need to drive right through “Ground Zero” when it comes to traffic. Both locations are really close to the intersection of Sunset and the 405. The Barrington Recreation Center and

Brentwood Presbyterian Church – where we used to vote – seem much more in the middle of things. To be fair, the Village Lutheran Church location will be great for those living in Brentwood Glen. This little corner of Brentwood seems a bit “forgotten” by the rest of Brentwood, because it’s a bit cut off from the rest of Brentwood. So maybe they deserve a break this time. I’ve been inside the Luxe and that cute little church many times. I’m sure the hospitality will be terrific. I just think it would more convenient for most of us if we went back to Barrington Recreation Center and Brentwood Presbyterian Church. Note: the mechanics of voting will change. If you haven’t yet voted, and need help, go to LAVote.net. There are some videos there showing how the new equipment will work. $1.3 Billion Secured to Complete Purple Line Subway to VA

Once this Full Funding Grant Agreement is finalized the grant will deliver $1.3 billion for a subway primarily under Wilshire Boulevard that will connect downtown Los Angeles and Westwood with service en route to the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and Century City. “This is exciting and greatly welcome news to everyone in my district who waited patiently for the okay for the Purple Line Extension to the Westside,” said L.A. County Supervisor and Metro Board Member Sheila Kuehl. “Kudos and thanks to our federal partners for helping us deliver this critically important transit project to the taxpayers of L.A. County.” Metro is now actively building the first two sections of the subway and has begun some

initial preparatory construction activities for Section 3 between Century City and Westwood. Major construction is expected to start later this year. The three sections of the seven-mile Purple Line Extension are expected to open, respectively, in 2023, 2025 and 2027. “This new transit line, when fully constructed, will revolutionize connections between the Westside and the rest of Los Angeles County’s growing rail and bus networks,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. According to LA Metro, the Purple Line Extension to the Westwood/VA Hospital station will garner about 49,300 daily weekday boardings at the seven new stations. There will be about 78,000 new daily trips on the full Metro Rail System as a result of opening this line.

Nearly half a million workers commute every day too and from the Westside. An over $1 billion federal grant that was committed to LA Metro this week, however, brings the agency closer to alleviating some of the resulting traffic with a subway ending at the VA near Brentwood. A federal grant totaling nearly $1.3 billion to help build the third and final phase of the Metro Purple Line Extension to the Westwood/VA Hospital in Westwood was sent February 11 by

Transportation Authority (LA Metro). The $1.3 billion federal grant will be delivered through a multi-year agreement known as a Full Funding Grant Agreement that is governed by the FTA’s Capital Investment Grant program. The $1.3 billion is a stand-alone grant agreement, with no required loans for Metro to pay back as in previous funding agreements for Sections 1 and 2 of the extension. According to LA Metro, the overall cost for this section of the project is $3.6 billion, with remaining funds coming from Metro’s voter-approved transportation sales tax

Reducing Brentwood Gridlock LADOT to deploy officers regularly at the Barrington Ave, Barrington Place, and Bundy intersections every afternoon,” reads Bonin’s January newsletter. According to Bonin, constituents have observed multiple days where officers were not deployed over the holidays and continuing into January. In response, Bonin began working with LADOT to address the staffing shortage that caused the missed shifts. A new class of officers has since joined the force and is currently being trained in the field. “You may even see new trainees and their

supervisors in the field for the next several weeks. With the additional officers now assigned to the Western office, staffing on Sunset will return to normal soon,” Bonin said. Boni also announced that a long-awaited dynamic ramp metering project is still ontime and on-budget. This multi-agency project will connect LADOT traffic signals with Caltrans metering lights to more effectively manage traffic flow onto the freeway and reduce backups on city streets. The new system is expected to become operational later this summer.

Barrington Plaza Fire Victims Take Legal Action Tenant files suit against owner of Brentwood high-rise that caught fire By Sam Catanzaro A tenant of a Brentwood-area high-rise that caught fire last month filed suit alleging that the building’s owner was negligent. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), on January 29 a fire was reported at 8:37 a.m. on the 7th floor of a 25-story residential high-rise complex know as Barrington Plaza located at 11740 Wilshire Boulevard. Two firefighters sustained injuries battling the fire. According to Scott, they suffered minor burns and were treated and transported to a local hospital. The LAFD treated 11 civilian patients. Seven were transported to a local hospital – including a 3-month-old child – while four were treated and released on the scene. One 19-year-old male died from smoke inhalation and burns. Following the fire, a tenant filed a suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging that the company that owns the building, Douglas Emmett Inc., was negligent in failing to install sprinklers and

perform other fire safety improvements. “For years, tenants of Barrington Plaza Apartments have pleaded, warned and fought with Douglas Emmett … about a

the court to permit a class action. Brentwood News contacted Douglas Emmett for comment but the company could not immediately be reached. According to the LAFD, high rises in the City of Los Angeles are inspected annually. Barrington Plaza was last inspected in June 2019 and was up to code, says Scott. The 25-story building had no sprinklers, even though the same building burned almost seven years ago. Barrington Plaza is one of 55 nonsprinkler-ed high-rises in LA. All of these were built prior to 1974 and therefore the LAFD says they are not required to have sprinklers. Councilmember Mike Bonin, who represents the area, has introduced legislation to LA City Council that would require older residential high rises to be retrofitted to have sprinklers and other fire safety precautions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Brentwood Homeowners Association Holds Annual Meeting By Jeff hall

It was wall-to-wall people at the Brentwood Homeowners Association annual meeting, held at University Synagogue on February 24. Brentwood Homeowners Association (BHA) president Kathleen Flanagan introduced LAPD officers Jonathan Tom and Matt Kirk. Tom is the new captain overseeing the West Los Angeles station; Kirk is Brentwood’s new Senior Lead Officer (SLO). Former Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray wasn’t there, but a special statuette thanking her for her service to the Brentwood community was given to Tom and Kirk for delivery to Gray. Mike Bonin was BHA’s keynote speaker. His focus was on firefighting. Bonin showered

praise on members of LAFD in attendance for the job they did combatting the Getty Fire in December. Fire protection has been a prime cause for Bonin since he took office in 2013. Early on, he championed giving firefighting teams iPads in order to make it easier to navigate streets. Prior to the iPads, each truck carried a supply of printed Thomas Guides (printed maps, for those readers born in the digital age). In recent years and months, Bonin has been pushing for increased funding for LAFD, including a new fire-fighting helicopter that became operational just prior to the Getty Fire. An experiment a while back – a fire evacuation drill in Mandeville Canyon -- didn’t go well. Electronic communication was a real

issue. But, said Bonin, the lessons learned made LAFD far more prepared to handle the Getty Fire with dispatch. One lesson from the Getty Fire: homeowners need to communicate with their gardeners, nannies, house cleaners and others, letting them know they don’t need to report to work until the danger has passed. Many tried to enter the fire zone during the evacuation, for fear they might be let go if they didn’t report to work. Bonin urged everyone to down names and numbers of those they need to contact on a notecard and stash it in their “go bag.” Bonin said, in the “new normal” of climate change, we need to keep evolving in our

Treating Abdominal Injuries at Body Rhythm Shevi Baruch on helping patients with diastasis recti

By Staff Writer With more than 3 million cases diagnosed each year, diastasis recti is one of the more common abdominal injuries suffered by both men and women in America today. Put most simply, diastasis recti is the partial or complete separation of the “six-pack” muscles, which meet at the midline of your stomach. It is most common in women who are over 35 and older men with abdominal obesity. Diastasis recti generally isn’t dangerous and it can often be successfully treated with corrective exercise and strength training of all the core muscles which usually involves pelvic floor and deep stomach muscle exercises. Over the past 20 years, Shevi Baruch, founder of Body Rhythm, has helped a myriad of clients with diastasis Recti. Common symptoms include a bump or ridge extending down the middle of the abdomen, lower back pain, poor posture and for some people, constipation and bloating. “A typical situation is when a postpartum woman endeavors to get back into shape,” Shevi said. “She arrives at the studio months to years after having given birth. She has lost the pregnancy weight, but her abdominals are not responding to the exercises she has been doing.” That is when it is important to check for a diastasis recti because failing to correctly diagnose the condition can lead to a further separation of the abdominal wall if the mother is performing traditional abdominal crunch to get her abs back into shape.” To diagnose the condition Shevi explains that she will have a client lay on their back, feet flat and

knees bent (photo 1) “Support their head with one hand and curl up,” Shevi continued. “Place your other hand fingers on top, above and bellow of the belly button, to check if you can press your fingers down (photo 2). If you can press more then one finger down, you may have a diastasis recti. While there are certain exercises that people with diastasis Recti should avoid, there are others that could potentially help to close the gap. Shevi explained, “Those exercises focus primarily on the pelvic floor, back muscles, transverse abdominis and the psoas.” Shevi recommends to her clients to perform those exercises at home three times a day for one to six months. “In most cases after few months the abdominal gap will close. Sometimes it takes only few weeks to see the abdominals flatten. Then the

client’s program is revised and now they can perform any abdominal exercise including those that include head lift and curl up,” Shevi added. Shevi’s unique ability to understand the body is what allows her to help her clients through different conditions. “I always take into consideration the person that enters the studio, his or her challenges and strengths. Ron Galperin, LA City Controller, gave an in-depth review of city finances. He was fairly critical of LA’s efforts to house the homeless; he pointed out that after raising $1.2 billion in taxes, three and a half years later, fewer than 50 new housing units have been built. Mayor Garcetti, Mike Bonin and others have said Angelenos are about to see a lot of progress and that the problem of homelessness won’t be solved overnight. Galperin questioned the cost of units being proposed (some are proposed to cost as much as $500K to $700K each), with as much as 40% of this going to satisfy regulatory and approval requirements. Bisnoff responded by saying the practice was approved by LAFD, which was good enough for the BCC. Sheila Simmons attempted to put forward a motion that would highly curtail scooter companies (Bird, Lime, Wheelz, etc.) from parking on sidewalks, calling these “dockless” vehicles a safety hazard to pedestrians. Several on the BCC board wanted to give the companies a chance to present their case, so this action was continued till next month’s meeting (second Wednesday of every month). The BCC is hosting a special meeting on the issue of homelessness in the neighborhood. It will be held March 28 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Kaufman Branch Library. The meeting is open to the public.

on issues of affordability. Housing prices in particular, are rising much faster than wages. This led to a discussion of homelessness. Zev said mental health centers needed to be a big part of the solution, which means hiring more counselors, social workers and doctors. Giving a mentally ill homeless person a place to sleep is fundamentally important, he said, but that’s not enough. Zev said that many homeless individuals aren’t mentally ill when they first become homeless – but after several months or years on the street, most individuals will be negatively impacted. Zev also talked about what he saw as the folly of SB50, a Sacramento bill that would allow more high rises near transit corridors. To many, Zev said, this sounds like common-sense. But what many didn’t realize, he said, is that the proposed law would have allowed rezoning

firefighting techniques. Bonin said new technology allows airplanes to locate, via infrared technology, smoldering hot spots in need of extinguishing. Bonin also said buildings like Barrington Sunset on Wilshire – scene of a recent fire – need to be retrofitted with sprinklers. Former LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky also gave a presentation; it felt like a homecoming of sorts. He goes back a long way when it comes to representing the Westside, first, as a city councilman, followed by many years served as a county supervisor. When introducing Yaroslavsky, BHA President Kathleen Flanagan said, like Bono and Sting, the former supervisor was universally known by a single name: Zev. Zev is now director of the Luskin School of Public Policy at UCLA. He described some recent polling research that indicated traffic actually isn’t the number-one issue for most Angelenos. Everyone abhors traffic, noted Zev, but most feel like that issue is beyond their control, so they accept it as a fact of life. People are much more focused, he said,

The Brentwood Community Council is made up of stakeholder groups, including local homeowner associations and representatives of business operators, schools, religious institutions and other groups. Committees focus on issues like traffic, safety, schools and homelessness. Input from the BCC is considered critical by elected officials and other policymakers. Given that scenario, any home within a half mile of San Vicente, 26th Street, Wilshire, Barrington, San Vicente or Sunset – where buses run all day long – would be subject to rezoning and the introduction of high-rise development in areas formerly zoned as single family residences. This is one of the reasons homeowner leaders were so vehemently opposed to the measure. Zev thanked so-called NIMBYs for their leadership on this issue. SB50 ultimately failed, and Zev said he personally always liked hearing from homeowner associations as they kept him informed – and kept his feet to the fire. Last but not least, Ray Klein – who, unlike Zev, must go by his full name – was given special appreciation for his 15 years of service on the BHA board.
