A “First Amendment Audit” Turns Violent at the Brentwood Post Office on Tuesday
A Bystander Injured and Hospitalized After YouTube Group Films Residents
The Brentwood Post Office was the site of what looked like a publicity stunt and ended in violence. When the post office at 200 S. Barrington Avenue opened at 8:30 a.m., a man named Josh Paris met six men who claimed to be “First Amendment Auditors” who were there as part of a group that they called “iiMPCT MEDIA,” as reported by Fox 11 News. The incident seemed strange and we have reached out to the LAPD for confirmation in addition to the video footage published by Fox 11 News.
“First Amendment Auditors” are defined by the website Freedom Forum. org which states, “A First Amendment audit occurs when people film public officials or employees to hold them accountable or “test” their right to film in public spaces like town halls, libraries, police stations, parking lots, or state and local agencies. The public space “passes” the test if the audit is uneventful. It fails the test if a public employee confronts the person filming — or “auditor” — attempts to stop them from filming, threatens them with arrest, or removes them from the public space.”
“First Amendment audit videos are often posted to YouTube.”
The men were dressed in costume, with one man wearing a full white futuristic suit reminiscent of Star Wars characters,
with a reflective visor over his face. After some difficulty remembering the name of his costume, he called himself, “Shockwave.” The other men were dressed in non-descript clothing and were wearing fake beards and bandannas over their faces.
Paris interviewed “Shockwave” on camera and the “audit” seemed to not cause too much trouble, except when members of the public objected to being filmed. The witness footage shows the men standing in front of the entrance of the post office where a woman who was trying to enter the building.
After the woman’s attempts to access the building seemed frustrated, the woman allegedly waved her cane at the men and walked away. A man named Robert came to the woman’s defense and reportedly was put in a chokehold on the ground by more than one of the “iiMPCT MEDIA” members who also allegedly stomped on the man’s head.
Robert, according to the report from Fox 11, was having trouble breathing after being released and bystanders called 911. The news report states that one of the men ran away but returned with a camera to film what was happening and he and two other members of the group were placed under arrest.
We have requested more information from the LAPD and will update this story as the story develops. iiMPCT MEDIA has posted a video of their audit on their YouTube channel but it does not include the footage of the fight.
The video’s description refers to people who object to being filmed or who call the police “Karens.” The linked Instagram account is private and the TikTok account no longer exists.

Yaroslavsky reflected on the significance of the square’s location in Westwood, home to the largest Iranian American community outside of Iran. “The Women Life Freedom movement is a global call for justice, and I am immensely proud that our district — and particularly Westwood — has played such an important role in honoring Mahsa Amini’s legacy,” Yaroslavsky said. “This square serves as a reminder that the fight for women’s rights is far from over, and that Los Angeles stands in solidarity with the courageous women and allies who are pushing for change around the world.”
Roozbeh Farahanipour, CEO of the West LA Chamber of Commerce, expressed solidarity with the Iranian people. “On behalf of our Westwood and Iranian American communities, we want to send a strong message to the people in Iran that all Angelenos who share deeply
held American values proudly stand with the freedom-loving people of Iran,” he said. “You are not forgotten.”
Emiliana Guereca, CEO of the Women’s March Foundation, emphasized the ongoing fight for women’s rights globally. “Mahsa Amini’s death is a stark reminder that until all women are safe, our fight for women’s rights must continue,” Guereca said. “The Women’s March Foundation is proud to co-present Women Life Freedom Square to honor her legacy and ensure that women’s stories are remembered in our public spaces.”
The event also featured performances by Aviva and Morteza Barjestah, and remarks from Beverly Hills Vice-Mayor Sharona Nazarian, actress and activist Nazanin Boniadi, and West LA Chamber of Commerce CFO Elham Yaghoubian.

Brentwood Beat: Welcome, McCarthy Pharmacy

By Jeff Hall
Brentwood: We have a new neighbor. McCarthy Pharmacy, well-known in Santa Monica for 20 years, just moved to Brentwood.
McCarthy Pharmacy occupies the space where Pharmaca was up until recently, right next to Vicente Foods.
McCarthy Pharmacy used to be located at Ocean Park and Lincoln in Santa Monica, but that block was recently rezoned to accommodate a big housing project.
McCarthy Pharmacy needed a new home, and Bob Inadomi, General Manager of Vicente Foods, extended an invitation to McCarthy to move in. Pharmacist Mordechai Nikfar and his wife, Honey, co-own and operate the business. They live in 90049.
McCarthy Pharmacy prides itself on its old-fashioned values and exceptional customer service.
McCarthy has a very loyal customer base, according to the Nikfars, with most of McCarthy’s current clientele traveling
from Santa Monica to Brentwood.
“Check us out on Google or Yelp,” said Honey Nikfar. “You’ll see that people like us.”
According to the Nikfars, McCarthy’s prices are low and the pharmacy caters to older clients who need help managing their prescriptions and any paperwork required.
The pharmacy happily sends refill reminders via text, email – or even phone call. The pharmacy also delivers, using its own drivers, the Post Office and FedEx.
When asked why McCarthy could make it in this location when Pharmaca could not, the Nikfars said Pharmaca is part of a bigger chain – and that chains simply can’t offer the same level of service as a small mom-and-pop shop (literally, in this case).
“Come in and try us. You’ll see,” said Dr. Nikfar.
In order to gain a following in Brentwood, McCarthy is offering 10% off on all non-prescription items on Tuesdays.

‘A Must-See’: Light in the Piazza Comes to Broad Stage for One Night Musical
By Susan Payne
An intimate story of contemporary and timeless romance produced by the Musical Theatre Guild is coming to the Broad Stage in Santa Monica for a one-night only, semistaged reading at the end of September, launching the first of many performances for the guild’s 2024-2025 season.
“The Light in the Piazza” is a Tonyaward winning lush, sophisticated and classical musical about a mother and daughter discovering their true selves while visiting Florence, inspired by the 1962 romantic comedy film and novel by Elizabeth Spencer.
While sightseeing in Florence, daughter Clara Johnson (Valerie Larsen) loses her hat in a sudden wind gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli (Gabriel Navarro), a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This begins The Light in the Piazza, a story of Clara and Fabrizio falling in love. However, with love, comes unforeseen complications.
“Certain problems ensue, and we learn more about those difficulties and the intimacies of the families. It’s a very moving story that’s told quite well. One of the great things about this score is that although it’s very modern in its way, it also harkens back to a time when Broadway
melodies were soaring — like Richard Rodgers, or Leonard Bernstein writing in West Side Story,” said Brad Ellis, the director of music for The Light in the Piazza.
As this one-night performance is set for the end of September, Ellis, who played the quiet teacher/piano accompanist in the Fox television show “Glee,” encourages all to attend for the musical’s complexity, unpredictability and romantic draw sung by a cast of Musical Theatre Guild members with a wealth of expertise.
“This is your chance to see an absolutely expert cast, performing a musically rich and unique storyline. It doesn’t follow traditional romantic expectations. Because of the complexity of the situation, which I can’t reveal, you’re not sure exactly what it is you want to have happen. When you finally understand what should happen, that brings us to tremendous conclusion,” Ellis said.
Ten Musical Theatre Guild members are cast for this performance on Sept. 29: Margaret Johnson (Kim Huber); Clara Johnson (Valerie Larsen); Fabrizio Naccarelli (Gabriel Navarro); Franca Naccarelli (Tal Fox); Guiseppe Naccarelli (Will Collyer); and Signor Naccarelli (Robert Yacko); Signora Naccarelli (Eydie Alyson) and Roy Johnson (Brent Shindele). Music and lyrics are by Adam Guettel.

“This show is beautiful and it’s famously complex to put together. What’s terrific about Musical Theatre Guild is the depth of experience of these Broadway performers who really can dig into this material and get it right, even for one night,” Ellis added. “For musical theatre fans, and for those who aren’t the deepest musical theatre fans, it’s a must-see.”
Musical Theatre Guild comprises musical theatre artists in the Los Angeles area that produce staged concert readings

of Broadway’s forgotten gems and undiscovered treasures. Members represent over 60 Broadway shows, 79 Broadway National Tours, countless regional products, cast recordings and more. Get your tickets to “The Light in the Piazza” on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, Eli and Edythe Broad Stage (1310 11th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401) here: musicaltheatreguild.com/show/the-lightin-the-piazza.

UCLA’s Center for Art and Performance (CAP UCLA) will host a two-night engagement of Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World, a multimedia production by the British-Iranian Javaad Alipoor Company. The performances are scheduled for September 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. at CAP UCLA’s The Nimoy.
The production explores the life and mysterious still unsolved murder of Iranian pop icon Fereydoun Farrokhzad, who was found dead in Germany just six months after performing to sold-out crowds. Blending elements of a play, documentary, and podcast, the show is set to live music and offers a technicolor deep dive into Farrokhzad’s story. It also examines how dissidents from the Global South continue to be targeted in the West, while critiquing the limitations of modern technology in a post-colonial world.
This show is the final installment in a

The "B" was kept and used to begin the word "Brewery." The plant was the first to use the new, efficient steam turbine technology and was the third plant in Los Angeles and by far the most modern at that time. Brentwood Beat: How to Reduce Crime in Brentwood
By Jeff Hall
Concerned Brentwoodians gathered via Zoom on August 28 to brainstorm strategies intended to reduce crime in the area.
In recent months, there has been an alarming rise in robberies, including invasion break-ins that take place even while residents are at home.
Criminals, including well-financed “burglary tourists” from South America, have become highly sophisticated in their approaches to thievery.
Some know how to quickly find and cut wires that enable alarm and security cameras to function. Even wireless systems can be overcome by wifi jammers.
Some theft rings even fly drones to scope out houses, looking for homes that appear to have nobody inside.
suspicious, everyone nearby knows about it quickly.
This Homewood organization also invested in a “Flock” camera system that takes pictures of license plates and then compares the license plate numbers against a database of known cars that frequent the neighborhood.
Should a burglary occur, chances are good the Flock system will have captured the license plate of all vehicles in the neighborhood at the time of the crime.
This gives the LAPD hugely valuable information that can be used to chase down perpetrators, said Brentwood’s Senior Lead Officer Matthew Kirk.
City Councilwoman Traci Park said 90 percent of every working day is spent on crime and public safety issues. Fighting crime was a central thrust of her election

Park said the ranks of the LAPD now stand at around 8,800, down from 10,000 a few years ago. Recruiting is difficult these days, she said. Having more police officers will go a long way toward reducing crime,

Senior Lead Officer Matt Kirk said robbers from South Central are quite brazen and pay little attention to security cameras. They just pull up their hoodies, making it
He said street-level cameras like those built by Flock often capture videos of home
More tips from Carolyn Jordan and other participants:
1) If your property backs up to a canyon, point at least one of your security cameras in that direction. Criminals know to avoid cameras facing the street and can come from less obvious directions; 2) If you have an alarm system, use it. Many burglaries take place in homes with

Eclipse School Helps Children Prepare for Kindergarten
By Susan Payne
Transitional Kindergarten works.
For Juliya Spiegel, mother to a now five-year-old kindergartener, a decision was on the table one year ago to enroll her son into Eclipse School, a TK program in the Pacific Palisades.
After touring the school and learning more about the program, Spiegel felt the program was right for her son and decided it was a yes.
Because it’s a smaller, more intimate setting, her son — like the other students — was encouraged to find commonalities and build a bond with each of the students through activities and play. While developing social emotional and foundational skills in his last year of preschool, Spiegel’s son gained confidence in making new friends and the ability to read before kindergarten started.
“It was the best parenting decision we could have made. His confidence was soaring on his first day of kindergarten this year,” Spiegel said.
With over 50 years of combined
teaching experience, Eclipse founders Beth Reilly and Shea Morris lead the program, combining foundational skills and developmental learning with an emphasis on language and literacy.
Eclipse’s unique curriculum prepares children socially, emotionally and academically to ensure they succeed in any kindergarten — progressive, traditional or rigorous academic.
“Social emotional growth is one of Eclipse’s focuses and that’s what gave my son confidence. They (Reilly and Morris) have been lifechanging teachers and humans and I’m so grateful that I listened to my gut,” Spiegel said.
After spending over 14 years as friends and colleagues, many conversations about child development, teaching philosophies and collaboration propelled the founders to start Eclipse. What began as a summer camp is now a school in its third year, preparing each child the strongest foundations for their academic journey.
Reilly and Morris believe wholeheartedly that opportunities for play and social emotional growth with
exposure to foundational skills set young students up for success in kindergarten and beyond.
“If they’re developmentally ready then they will grasp those skills sooner. If they are not quite ready, the multitude of opportunities to be exposed to the skill will give them familiarity to the skill when they are ready in kindergarten,” Morris said.
Eclipse’s literacy program introduces children to sounds and letters throughout the transitional kindergarten year. By the end of the year, the students are putting sounds and letters together to create words while reading or writing.
For math, Eclipse exposes children to a variety of skills such as number recognition, counting, patterns and critical thinking in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. Diving deeper into science topics and art, Morris said this year, they take each letter of the alphabet and focus on an artist or art techniques.
“The letter C was connected to Eric Carle, the illustrator and we created colorful collages,” Morris said. “It’s

another way to be engaged while learning. Our job is to instill a love of learning in these children and to do that we have to have a fun and inviting environment.”
Now that TK has passed for Spiegel’s son, she reflects on the decision she made to transition him to Eclipse.
“Beth and Shea really delivered, they instilled a love of learning in Lev and confidence both inside the classroom and on the playground. Eclipse is a magical school that provided the perfect foundation for Lev’s school experience,” Spiegel said.

Industrious Expands, Opens New Flexible Workspaces in LA
By Susan Payne
New and expanded Industrious offices are opening soon in Los Angeles.
Founded in 2012 by Jamie Hodari and Justin Stewart, the first Industrious office opened in Chicago. Now, with more than 120 locations in 50+ cities in the United States and abroad, the company has become the leading workplace provider for companies of all sizes and stages.
This fall and winter, Industrious is opening new and expanded office space in Century City, Santa Monica and West Hollywood. Offering flexible lease terms, coworking memberships, conference and meeting rooms, Industrious’ coworking, private offices and suites are perfect for professionals looking for thoughtfully designed and full service workspaces.
“We fill a void for professionals who desire the flexibility of being in the office when they want to and enjoy a great experience while they are here. As companies expand, shrink or change, we’re able to support that growth in both directions,” said Chloe Sosnowski, the general manager for Industrious Los Angeles.
Opening in October, Industrious in Century City is expanding to the building next to its current location because of its need for more space. This premier location in Watt Plaza puts your workplace in the heart of Century City and close to LA’s

luxe real estate, retail and entertainment.
In Santa Monica, Industrious is opening a new location on Wilshire Boulevard, slated to open this winter. Near the beach, this office space offers a range of flexible solutions including outdoor space, storage space, an open atrium lobby and more.
“We’ve had successful locations in Los Angeles for a long time, so we’re excited to open a new space for the first time in Santa Monica this winter. We don’t have a lot of options for flexible working spaces in Santa Monica, so we believe this is going to fill a gap for people don’t want to commute long distances for work” Sosnowski said.
An expansion of an Industrious workspace in West Hollywood, slated to open in the spring of 2025, shares a similar story to Century City’s growth, in
which more space was a necessity.
“We’ve been full in our West Hollywood location for a long time, so much so, that we’re expanding next door, and we’re so excited for the expansion,” Sosnowski said. “For these openings, we usually have a ribbon cutting ceremony and we’re locking in those dates now.”
At Industrious workspaces, common areas such as cafes, meeting rooms, lounges and wellness rooms are shared. Offices come fully furnished and move in-ready while suites, or upgraded offices, come with a dedicated reception area and conference rooms.
“We’re excited to be in Los Angeles in a city that’s supported us for so long. We’re looking forward to continuing our growth there, we’d love to have people and companies experience us,” Sosnowski
said.
The company offers monthly Access Memberships that allow people to work from the common areas every day, plus reserve a desk once a week. Virtual Memberships provide businesses with a professional mailing address at any location, exclusive member benefits and the Industrious’ full range of on-site services, amenities and spaces. Meeting spaces are available for teams up to 20 people available by the hour or the day. Day passes are also available ranging from $50-85 per day.
