Dog Fatally Struck in Brentwood Crosswalk; Owner Seeks Answers
Tragic Incident Involving
Hit-AndRun
Driver at Busy Intersection
By Dolores QuintanaIn a disturbing incident, a dog was killed after being struck by a car in broad daylight while crossing the intersection of Gretna Green Way and Montana Avenue in Brentwood on March 9. The incident happened around 2:40 p.m., as the dog’s owner and Brentwood resident, Leslie Mayer, was in the crosswalk with two dogs, Jolie and Theo, on a leash.
According to the owner, in her post on Nextdoor, the driver of an older brown

Mercedes rolled through a stop sign and accelerated through the crosswalk, striking one of the dogs, named Theo, on a three-foot leash. Mayer reported being approximately 10 feet off the curb when they heard the car accelerate behind them. By the time they turned, it was too late, and she and
her second dog survived because they were standing outside of the car’s path.
The driver, described as a senior man, reportedly exited the vehicle after the incident, seemingly confused. He claimed to have seen the owner but not the dogs and asked, “What happened?” as if he had

not seen what had occurred. Despite the severity of the situation, the driver allegedly failed to provide any information or offer an apology before leaving the scene.
The intersection of Gretna Green and Montana Avenues is an area in Brentwood with many pedestrians and foot traffic, especially on Sundays when the popular Brentwood Farmers’ Market takes place. Leslie Mayer warns others to be cautious when crossing the street in this area and is looking for any information that could help identify the hit-and-run driver in the neighborhood.

When your loved one has Alzheimer’s, dementia, early stage memory loss, Parkinson’s or is recovering from a stroke:

Opinion: West Los Angeles Needs to Care about Veteran Homelessness

Veteran homelessness is a public health concern that impacts my West Los Angeles community. As a USC Masters in Social Work candidate, I have been working with people who struggle to secure housing. Braving the weather conditions compromises their immune systems, which results in increased risk for infectious diseases, such as the 2018 Hepatitis A outbreak that spread through California.
Many unhoused individuals are survivors of abuse and trauma and are grappling with mental health challenges. The psychological and emotional issues they endure oftentimes lead them to self-medicate with alcohol and/or drugs, which increases substance use issues. People who have faced chronic mistreatment naturally tend to inflict pain onto others, oftentimes unknowingly.
I was walking on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood one morning, and an unhoused individual was pacing back and forth in front of me. I recognized her because I had seen her visit shops in the area before. I stepped aside to give her space because I was not sure where she was going next, and she began screaming at me and spat at me. She said, “Why did you move away from me? I served this country, and this is what I get in return!?”

One of my well-off neighbors is a veteran, while other veterans in the area lack stable housing. There is a correlation between high rates of homelessness and high rates of crime. Subsequently, local residents experience uncertainty and fear, and this untrusting outlook is unhealthy for the neighborhood as a whole. Social barriers are reinforced as stigma is perpetuated.
The Los Angeles Homelessness Authority reported 46,260 sheltered and unsheltered members of the city’s homeless population in January 2023. Furthermore, homelessness in Los Angeles increased by 10% between 2022 and 2023. This can be attributed to the lack of affordable housing, increases in rent costs as well as the expiration of COVID relief programs, such as policies that protected tenants and reduced eviction rates. This had led fewer people to enter homelessness prior to the expiration of the programs.
Unhoused veterans who receive disability benefits slip through the cracks because they are disqualified from the housing program due to their disability-related income. During the Brentwood Homeowner Association’s annual meeting on March 18th, 2024, Karen Bass emphasized that there are homeless veterans who have to choose between receiving disability income and receiving housing.
This is a missed opportunity to secure housing for these individuals. A 2017 study conducted by the RAND Corporation found that the implementation of a program in LA County that secures long-term housing for unhoused participants led to a 60% reduction in the costs of public services utilized. Furthermore, even after taking into account the costs of permanent housing, the county had saved 20% of their spendings.
There are housing programs that exist, but the waitlist for many is six months. Could you imagine being out on the streets during the winter months while it pours rain? U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) offers permanent housing to individuals in need who qualify, but its long waitlist leaves individuals unhoused.
To make matters worse, sometimes the waitlist can be so overburdened due to lack of housing that this results in the closure of the waitlist. People who risk their lives fighting for our country deserve better than to return to the United States and struggle to secure a basic need such as housing.
There is an opportunity to rectify this issue by legislating to make housing a human right and advocating for policies that support this. Countries such as Scotland, France, South Africa, and others have integrated a right to housing in their constitution and legislation, and in the case of Scotland, homelessness is rare and not recurring.
The West LA Veterans Administration Medical Center infrastructure is in the process of becoming a robust community that offers basic needs, medical services, protection, and care to veterans. Let us make sure that unnecessary barriers do not stand in the way of making sure every veteran gets the essential protection they deserve after putting their bodies, minds, and souls at risk to protect our nation.

Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren
Headlines Stand with Israel Luncheon
Distinguished Statesman Shares Insights
on
Israel’s Future
In Brentwood, one of Israel’s most distinguished statesmen, Ambassador Michael Oren, a diplomat who worked at the highest levels of the Israeli government, was the featured speaker at Jewish National FundUSA’s 12th annual Stand with Israel Legacy Luncheon in Brentwood on February 23.
The Positively Israel event for local partners (donors) was attended by nearly 200 philanthropists joining in celebration of the past, present, and future of Israel. The solidarity portions of the afternoon included a moment of silence to remember the hostages, the fallen, and the families and for peace in Israel.
During his tenure as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Oren worked with the White House, Congress, and the CIA on crucial strategic issues, including the Iron Dome defense system and the Iran nuclear threat. Drawing on more than forty years of experience in governance, the military, and foreign service, and with the perspective of
a historian who has lived throughout Israel and abroad, the New York Times bestselling author discussed his latest book, 2048 The Rejuvenated State, the Israel-Hamas War; and the threat of an even bigger enemy across the northern border in Lebanon.
“October 7 was more than just an outrageously barbaric attack by heinous terrorists...It was the breakdown of a covenant,” said Oren. “Every Israeli knows that this is a war not just for our security, not just to let those people come back to their homes, not just to send a message to the region…We know that this is a battle for our national survival.”
Representatives from Jewish National FundUSA recounted how, since the morning of the “Black Shabbat,” the organization’s team in Israel immediately mobilized to support the devastated communities — evacuating, feeding, clothing, and providing other supplies and trauma therapy to tens of thousands of evacuees and working tirelessly to coordinate, serve, and help those in need — transforming the black, burnt, and broken into love, light, healing, and hope.
“The shock we all felt as we learned about October 7 and the atrocities that took place that day continue on with respect to the war and the hostage situation,” said Jewish National Fund-USA’s Director of Planned Giving, West
Coast, Cynthia Hizami, Esquire.
“We also watched as the world judged…not Hamas and their incomprehensible inhumanity and pure evil…but instead Jews and Israel. However, something else has happened. Through our shock, pain, and sorrow, through a world tinted with rising antisemitism and Jew-hatred, Jews worldwide have united in a show of compassion and endurance. Our bond with Israel is stronger today than ever before.”
The organization’s leaders also shared how, through an unprecedented level of charitable giving, Jewish National Fund-USA has raised nearly $60 million in immediate relief funds. They also unveiled the organization’s bold and visionary plans to rebuild the southern Israeli communities that were ravaged by Hamas and implementing plans for a bright and prosperous future.
“Work has already begun on a plan called Livnot B’Yachad—Build Together,” added Hizami. “This bold initiative will create a bright new future for the people of Israel and communities devastated by terror. The initiative includes building new houses, applying fresh coats of paint, beautiful parks, repaved roads, and strategic community infrastructure. We will rebuild the Israel Envelope to a new level of glory.”
Hizami also shared the many ways supporters

of Israel can achieve their philanthropic goals while taking advantage of existing U.S. tax laws, including Charitable Gift Annuities, where individuals can receive a fixed income as high as 10.1%. She also discussed savvy ways. People are utilizing donor-advised funds, IRAs, and traditional bequests.
“At no time in our history has Jewish National Fund-USA’s work been more important,” added Fred Toczek and Susie Satzman Toczek, co-presidents of Jewish National Fund-USA in Greater Los Angeles. “The enduring strength and perseverance of Israel has always been important to us and our family. Our partnership with Jewish National Fund-USA allows us to continue to support our homeland well into the future.” To learn more about the many meaningful ways you can leave a legacy for Israel, call 800.562.7526 or email plannedgiving@jnf.org.

Brentwood Beat: Can LA Learn Anything from Oakland?
By Jeff HallWhen those of us in LA – especially Brentwood – think of Oakland, the images that come to mind probably aren’t very favorable. Many of us think of murder, crime, poverty, homelessness, racial tension.
Recently, In-and-Out Burger announced it was closing its only remaining location in Oakland. The location was reportedly busy and still profitable, but concerns for customer and employee safety took priority, according to company management. There is simply too much crime in Oakland, according to In-and-Out.
Governor Newsom recently announced he was sending in added CHP and other safety personnel in an attempt to crack down on crime in Oakland.
So I was curious when I was recently invited to attend a presentation by John Huddle and Daniel Cooper of EIKON, an Oakland-based homelessness and poverty outreach program.
The program was being touted as a success, and I wanted to see what EIKON was doing to beat the odds. We have our own homelessness, poverty, and crime problems here in LA. What can we learn from EIKON?
EIKON started at a church in Oakland.
John Huddle was called to Christian ministry there and, upon arrival, was taken aback by the living conditions he confronted. At his urging, his congregation began to do what it could—find someone shelter, provide some free lunches, take unwanted furniture, and get it into the hands of those who needed it.
Many who sought help had mental health and substance abuse issues. Some suffered domestic violence – or violence on the streets. Almost all lived at or below the poverty level.
One day in 2020, Huddle got a call asking if EIKON could use several truckloads of food. In an act of spontaneous combustion, Huddle and his associates gathered in the church’s parking lot to unload, organize, store, and distribute the goods. Volunteers showed up in big numbers to help.
After this initial success, the word got out. Others in the region began contacting EIKON, asking the congregation if EIKON could use food, furniture, office supplies, and returned merchandise. The answer, of course, was a resounding “yes.”
Today, EIKON operates a warehouse in Hayward, near Oakland. Office Depot, Puma running shoes, and others now make regular drop-offs. WorldVision, a 501(c)(3) devoted to helping children, helps provide weekly truckloads of donations from a well-
Wine Tasting in Malibu

known seller of home goods.
EIKON quickly distributes food and goods to 45 points of distribution in eight East Bay Counties. The program benefits 1521 individuals living at or below the poverty line each month, according to Huddle.
In addition to the collection and distribution of food and physical goods, EIKON operates an after-school program called YES (Youth Environmental Studies) and a StopWaste program. EIKON regularly prepares free meals under the umbrella of “Infinite Christmas.”
EIKON is now gearing up to build a village of tiny homes on a church property in Hayward. The village will consist of 12 micro-homes, each 252 square feet. The target population is unhoused California State University East Bay students.
be dumped on street corners are effectively recycled back into others’ homes by EIKON, Cooper said.
EIKON just received a $20,000 grant from Alameda County to continue its work.
Here in LA, there are many churches, temples, mosques, and synagogues that do good work at the local level to help the poor and the homeless. But without coordination with, and funding from, governmental authorities, many of these efforts remain piecemeal and under-funded.
But, the potential in all this “people power” is formidable and should not be overlooked. Many places of worship have underutilized parking lots that could be used for tiny home villages. If religious organizations commit to not proselytize, wouldn’t LA benefit from having access to all this volunteer labor and available land?
LA should revisit its “no funding for religious organizations” policy. It’s selfdefeating.

Though EIKON has its roots in Christian values, there is no attempt to proselytize by members of the EIKON community among those seeking help. It all starts with modeling hope, according to Huddle. Members of the EIKON community try and give individuals the belief life can actually become better. This gets them started on the road to recovery and self-improvement.

Here in Los Angeles, any religious tie-in can get in the way of a religious organization’s receiving funding from city or county agencies. This isn’t true in Oakland, said Huddle. The City of Oakland and Alameda County are so desperate for support that they will accept help from just about anyone, said Huddle.
According to Daniel Cooper, Huddle’s partner, EIKON actually saves the city money by doing things more cost-effectively than the city can. Many couches, television sets, and other items that might otherwise

Those of us who go to various services should talk this up within our congregations. If there is any interest, I’d be happy to try and connect the right people to explore some win-win partnerships. If interested, please send me an email: jeffhall@ mirrormediagroupla.com.
Even though Oakland might seem far away, there is much we might learn from what’s going on up there. EIKON started with very little and now has big momentum. Surely, we have the same potential here.
Should you feel inspired, consider making a contribution. Maybe programs EIKON runs in the East Bay will benefit us here in LA one day.

FBI Seeks Victims of Alleged Online Exploitation Scheme Allegedly Run by Resident of Santa Monica

Individuals Urged to Come Forward in Investigation of John Douglas Burch
The FBI’s Philadelphia Field Office is urging individuals to come forward if they believe they may have been victimized by John Douglas Burch, a 54-year-old resident of Santa Monica, in a recent FBI bulletin. Burch faces federal charges related to allegations of engaging in illicit sexual conduct and enticing others, with the investigation revealing a pattern of online exploitation that spans multiple states.
According to federal authorities, Burch’s alleged scheme, which originated in Los Angeles, California, is thought to have affected minors in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and possibly other locations since at least 2014.
The FBI’s probe suggests that Burch utilized social media platforms, often assuming the identity of a fitness professional, to target primarily underage females, though some adults may have also been targeted. Allegedly, he pressured these individuals to participate in what he referred to as his “training program.” This program reportedly involved various tasks, including listening to explicit audio recordings, watching violent

pornography, and creating and transmitting pornographic content online.
Once individuals complied with Burch’s demands, the FBI alleges that he would arrange to meet them in person and coerce them into engaging in illegal and nonconsensual acts with himself and other men.
Authorities believe that Burch may have used social media to contact women and minor girls both domestically and internationally. Additionally, they suspect that he may have coerced women into recruiting others via social media. Some interactions with Burch may have occurred in person or through various social media accounts associated with him.
These are some of the social media handles for the accounts Burch used to allegedly lure victims:

Federal Agents Raid Property Linked to Music Mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs In Holmby Hills
Authorities Conduct Searches in Los Angeles as Part of Ongoing Sex Trafficking Probe
Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations, assisted by local HSI agents, conducted searches on Monday at two properties linked to music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, one in Los Angeles and the other in Miami as reported by multiple media sources. The searches are part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation led by federal authorities in New York, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Spokespersons for Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan declined to provide further details or comment on the matter,
so it is not known whether or not “Diddy” is the center of the investigation. Combs’ legal representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
According to a statement from HSI, the department has said that they were behind “law enforcement actions” as part of the ongoing investigation.
Combs’ Los Angeles residence, located in the affluent Holmby Hills neighborhood near Beverly Hills, had a police perimeter established. Helicopter footage from KABC-TV showed agents wearing Homeland Security Investigations vests gathered in the backyard near the pool area. The search seemed intensive, with reports coming from the property that agents even searched the cushions of poolside furniture.
The Los Angeles property associated with Combs’ Bad Boy Films production company is situated in the 200 block of S. Mapleton Drive in Holmby Hills, a neighborhood renowned for its celebrity residents and proximity to landmarks such as the Playboy Mansion.

During the operation, agents reportedly detained two individuals identified as Combs’ sons, although they were not placed under arrest. The sons were seen

Former Beverly Hills Therapist Indicted for Alleged Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material
Suspect Faces
Federal Charges
Following Investigation into Online Activity
A former licensed marriage and family therapist based in Beverly Hills has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of distributing child sexual abuse material, according to an announcement made by the Justice Department today.
Ron Gad, 49, residing in the PicoRobertson area of Los Angeles, was charged Thursday with one count of distribution of child pornography. Gad, whose marriage and family therapist license expired in November 2023, is currently out on a $250,000 bond. He is expected to appear for arraignment on May 3 in the United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles.
According to the indictment, Gad allegedly distributed child sexual abuse
material (CSAM) involving a pre-teen via the internet on December 2, 2021. The material was transported across state lines.
Previously filed court documents reveal that in the fall of 2022, law enforcement discovered Gad engaging in sexually explicit online conversations with an individual he believed to be a 13-yearold girl. However, the recipient was an undercover law enforcement officer.
In October 2022, Gad purportedly traveled over 180 miles from Beverly Hills to San Luis Obispo for a rendezvous at a public park, under the impression he would meet the “girl.” Upon arrival, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop, leading to Gad’s arrest and seizure of multiple digital devices, as per an affidavit filed with a criminal complaint.
Subsequent searches of Gad’s digital devices, authorized by a search warrant, allegedly revealed evidence of his distribution of CSAM, along with communications with suspected minors and internet searches related to sex with minors.
The San Luis Obispo County District

Attorney’s Office initially pressed charges against Gad in state court, which were subsequently dismissed to facilitate federal charges. An indictment and complaint are allegations, and every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in
being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.
Individuals with additional information concerning the case are encouraged to contact HSI’s tip line at (866) 347-2423.

AI-Generated Classmate Nudes: Beverly Hills Students Face Investigation
School District Says Potential Expulsion for Involved Students
An investigation is underway after authorities discovered that students at a Beverly Hills middle school employed artificial intelligence to create and share nude AI-generated images of their classmates, as reported by ABC 7 News.
The Beverly Hills Unified School District has labeled the incident as a “shocking misuse” of technology. Students found engaging in such behavior at Beverly Vista Middle School may potentially face expulsion and other repercussions, according to the district.
The Beverly Hills Police Department is actively involved in the investigation. School officials disclosed last week that they were made aware of the images, wherein the faces of students from the school were overlaid onto nude bodies generated by artificial intelligence. The ongoing investigation aims to determine

BHUSD Superintendent Michael Bregy stressed the importance of parents closely monitoring their children’s behavior in response to this incident. He also highlighted the legislative lag in keeping pace with the rapid advancements in technology.
“We strongly urge parents to remain engaged, scrutinize phones, and stay wellinformed about what is happening,” Bregy commented, as quoted by ABC 7 News. “Ultimately, it boils down to discerning the difference between right and wrong.”`
Operations-West Bureau Special Assault Section Asks For Public’s Help
Los Angeles Police Department’s OperationsWest Bureau Special Assault Section (SAS) is actively searching for additional victims in a series of sexual assaults that have recently come to light in the Hancock Park area.
On January 10, 2024, a 29-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by Kenneth Howard Dolin at his residence/photography studio in the Wilshire Division. Dolin, a wellknown photographer and acting coach with significant ties to the entertainment industry, has allegedly used modeling websites to solicit victims. Subsequent investigations by detectives revealed two additional female victims in their mid-twenties who accused Dolin of sexual assault in 2017. All three incidents reportedly began with professional contacts that escalated into Dolin inappropriately touching the women during solo photo shoots in his studio.
SAS investigators took action on March 4, 2024, arresting 64-year-old Kenneth Howard Dolin on charges of 289(a) P.C., Penetration with a Foreign Object (booking #6769557). Despite his arrest, Dolin has been released from custody pending further investigation.
Detective Brent Hopkins, a supervisor with the Special Assault Section, emphasized the

importance of understanding the distinction between art photography and sexual assault. “These victims felt trapped and had to comply with his advances. We want to make sure we know everything that happened and make sure that line does not get crossed again,” stated Detective Hopkins.
Investigators suspect that additional victims may have yet to come forward. A photograph of the suspect is being released to aid in the identification and communication with potential victims.
