Tax Relief is Available for Natural Disasters

From the Los Angeles County Assessor’s office

Assessor

This has been a challenging few months when it comes to our weather because we’ve been ravaged by severe storms not experienced in decades. The damage has been extensive throughout California, and our region has suffered significantly. The rain totals have been historic, with meteorologists indicating the most recent storm was the third wettest over a two-day period since 1877.

My entire office extends our sincerest regard to all those suffering from these storms, and we do have a program that offers property tax relief for qualified property owners.

It’s understandable that those affected by these storms would not be thinking about their property taxes at this difficult time. However, I did want to remind them there is property tax relief available in the event of damage to their property resulting from these types of natural disasters.

By filing a claim for Misfortune & Calamity relief within one year of the incident, properties that have sustained a minimum of $10,000 in damage or destruction may be eligible for a refund of taxes already paid and lower annual tax bills until the property is repaired or rebuilt.

This property tax relief is available to owners of homes, business equipment, fixtures, orchards, or other agricultural groves, and to owners of aircraft, boats, and certain manufactured homes. It is not available to property that is not assessable, such as state-licensed manufactured homes or household furnishings.

As stated, the claim has to be filed with my office within 12 months of the event, whether it be caused by fire, earthquake, flooding or any other natural disaster, for that matter. The savings can be for a total loss of the

property or a percentage of the damage as long as it’s $10,000 or more. The percentage is calculated by the appraiser using a standard formula, oftentimes in conjunction with other factors such as existing insurance.

If granted, the assessed value of your property will be reduced, effective from the date the damage occurred until the damaged structures are rebuilt or repaired, the property undergoes a change in ownership, or a base year value transfer is affected.

Furthermore, we are going to be proactively identifying eligible properties so the process can be moved forward expeditiously. These types of reassessments led to millions of dollars in property tax relief a few years back during a significant event known as the Woolsey Fire, as well as victims of the Rolling Hills Estates landslides where homes were red-tagged as uninhabitable when the ground collapsed underneath their foundations, reducing homes to rubble.

The M&C claim forms - known as the Application for Reassessment: Property Damaged or Destroyed by Misfortune or Calamity (ADS-820) - can be obtained online at https://assessor.lacounty.gov/tax-relief/

disaster-relief or by phone at (213) 974-8658.

Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang leads the largest local public property assessment agency in the nation. His office of about 1,400 appraisers and support staff is dedicated to creating an accurate and timely property Assessment Roll. This year, the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office conducted more than 2.5 million real estate and business assessments valued at nearly $2 trillion.

Brentwood Non-Profit SheStyles Seeks to Transform the Donation Experience

Sisters Empowering Girls, One Stylish Outfit at a Time, In Brentwood

In the early days of the pandemic, sisters

Brooke and JoJo Friedman embarked on a mission to transform the traditional clothing donation process. Recognizing the lack of consideration for recipients’ experiences, particularly among underserved communities, they founded SheStyles—the initiative aimed to offer girls stylish clothing choices at no cost, emphasizing personalization and dignity.

Brooke, initially motivated by her own closet clean-out, envisioned a shift from merely convenient donations to providing

an empowering and enjoyable experience for those in need. SheStyles, a project that transcends the pursuit of high-end designer pieces, focuses on giving girls access to diverse clothing options that resonate with their identities.

Starting on Instagram, SheStyles quickly expanded to hosting pop-up shops, with the first one held in the Saban Community Clinic’s East Melrose location in 2022. The Friedman sisters, along with a dedicated team of high school volunteers, have organized five additional pop-ups across Los Angeles in collaboration with nonprofits supporting girls and young women.

During these events, known as “SheStyles Boutiques,” attendees are assisted by the “SheStylists” team in selecting and styling

outfits from a wide array of donated clothes. Each item features a SheStyles hangtag, and the pop-ups are designed to emulate a boutique shopping experience, complete with branded shopping bags and makeup samples—all provided free of charge.

Brentwood Beat: Mike Feuer vs. Nick Melvoin: a Really Tough Choice

As we enter the political season, many in Brentwood will have their eyes on both Mike Feuer and Nick Melvoin.

Both are running in California’s 30th Congressional District, seeking to replace Adam Schiff, who is now running for U.S. Senator. There are 13 candidates in the primary race. The top two vote-getters will go on to November.

Technically, the congressman from the 30th District doesn’t represent Brentwood, so it might seem odd that I’d be writing about this particular race. We can’t vote for any of the candidates.

But we have two candidates we know well, Mike Feuer and Nick Melvoin. Both have represented Brentwood in one capacity or another.

Mike got started as a city councilman representing the 5th District, succeeding Zev Yaroslavsky. He then went on to become a state assemblyman in Sacramento – where he represented Brentwood. He later served as city attorney, representing all of Los Angeles.

Nick Melvoin grew up in Brentwood and became a public school teacher in LAUSD in Watts. He later worked in the Obama White House, and upon his return to Los Angeles, he ran for a seat on the LAUSD School Board. He won in the 4th District, which represents Brentwood.

I attended a 30th District candidate forum the other day at the Ebell Theater. I counted ten candidates on stage and maybe 100 in the audience. These things can be a bit wonky and not for everyone – especially on a Saturday afternoon – but some of us actually like this stuff. I thought it was a really good event, very ably moderated by Elex Michaelson, an anchor for FOX11.

Most of the candidates were very impressive. This will be a tough one for voters. For the purpose of this article, I’m still focused on Mike and Nick. I’ve known them both for years, I’ve interviewed them both, I’ve watched them in action.

I’m glad I’m not voting in this one. I like them both.

Mike Feuer is quite brilliant and really understands the nuances of policy. He has authored many important bills and initiated important actions while city attorney. He has a true gift for being able to explain the complexities and minutiae of public policy in a way that’s simple to understand.

Mike seems professorial, and I mean that, in this context, as a compliment. You always learn something when you listen to Mike. Mike and I go back a long way; I think he’d make an excellent congressman.

Nick Melvoin strikes me as possibly the more action-oriented of the two. When he and several teachers got laid off from LAUSD because of a dumb seniority policy, he sued. He was a school board member during Covid, and he leaped into action, keeping students in school – masked, inoculated, cared for, and fed. Because of this, parents could hold down their day jobs. It was quite a logistical feat and really changed the role schools play in our lives.

Now, Nick is championing using unused LAUSD campuses for the purpose of building affordable housing for teachers and other school personnel. These are hands-on managerial experiences many elected officials never acquire. Nick is now emphasizing the need for generational change, an argument that could resonate at a time when it currently looks like a rematch between Biden and Trump. Nick is 38.

Anyway, I can’t say anything more. The Brentwood News is officially neutral in such matters, and if I had to vote in this race, I wouldn’t know what to do. If you live in the 30th District, all I can say is good luck choosing. In addition to Mike and Nick, there are several outstanding candidates. Whoever wins, you’ll be in good hands.

I know I speak for many in Brentwood when I say “thank you” to Nick and Mike for all they have done for our community over the years.

Richard Neutra’s Iconic Adler House in Brentwood Hits Market at $3.495 Million

Mid-Century Modern Masterpiece Retains Original

Neutra Design

Brentwood’s Adler House, a midcentury estate designed by the renowned Richard Neutra, has been listed for sale, as reported by Mansion Global. The residence earned its name from Dr. Fred Adler, a physicist, and his wife, Alicia, who commissioned the renowned Austrian-American architect for its construction in 1955.

Chris Hicks, the listing agent for the home at The Agency, emphasizes Neutra’s brilliance in crafting a design that is both simple and perfect, showcasing breathtaking views that give the impression of hovering over Los Angeles.

The three-bedroom dwelling was purchased by the current, unresponsive sellers in 2013 for slightly over $1.75 million, as per PropertyShark records.

Hicks notes, “They bought it because they saw the importance of preserving the home. The previous owner put their own touches on it, and [the current owners] removed them and took it back to its original standing.”

Original features, including built-in cabinets, desks, and fireplaces, are preserved throughout the property, with Neutra’s distinctive mark evident.

The heart of the open-plan residence is its

light-filled sunken living area, adorned with walls of windows offering panoramic views stretching from Downtown Los Angeles to Catalina. The listing states that the kitchen has been updated and “flows effortlessly

for cooking and entertaining. The primary bedroom includes an original built-in desk with a vanity, an updated bathroom, and an added walk-in closet.”

Celebrated Architect Pierre Koenig’s Iconic Mid-Century Residence Hits Los Angeles Real Estate Market

The Personal Home of Pierre Koenig Listed for $4.995 Million in Brentwood

The Los Angeles residence belonging to mid-century architect Pierre Koenig, famed for designing some of the city’s iconic Case Study Houses, is now on the market for $4.995 million, as reported by Mansion Global. Known for his architectural masterpiece, the Stahl House, Koenig’s personal residence, recognized as “Koenig House No. 2” by the L.A. Conservancy, presents a unique opportunity for architectural enthusiasts. The home is currently listed as a sale pending on the listing agent’s site.

Dalton Gomez of Christie’s International RE | AKG, handling the sale with colleague Aaron Kirman, remarked, “Pierre Koenig is one of the greatest architects of our time, and to own his residence is a trophy unto itself.” Constructed in 1985, the steel home

spans three levels and features a lightfilled, open floor plan with glass walls dividing and connecting various rooms. The centerpiece is a three-story atrium crisscrossed by walkways and staircases.

Boasting 3,000 square feet, the residence includes a spacious living area, modern kitchen, dining space, and a library nook.

Gomez notes the house’s uniqueness due to its all-metal infrastructure—the bedrooms

open to the courtyard, creating a “jewelrybox feel” throughout the home. Koenig’s former office, still intact, adds to the property’s historical charm.

Gomez emphasizes that potential buyers gain more than just a home; they acquire bragging rights to a space chosen by Pierre Koenig for both living and creating. The house, referred to as a trophy property, carries the legacy of one of the most

celebrated architects in Los Angeles.

Previously in Koenig’s family, the residence underwent restoration by his stepchildren after his passing. It last changed hands in 2017 for $3.46 million. The current owners, however, could not be reached for comment, adding an air of mystery to this architectural gem now available to a new generation of homeowners.

Hollywood Producer’s Cinematic Home: Brentwood Masterpiece Hits Market at $17.75 Million

From Silver Screen to Rooftop Views: “Seinfeld Producer’s Modern Hideaway for Sale

Seinfeld Hollywood producer Andrew Scheinman, who is also the creative force behind popular productions such as “A Few Good Men” and “When Harry Met Sally,” has transitioned from crafting film blockbusters to creating a stunning residence in Los Angeles, as reported by Mansion Global.

Co-owner of Castle Rock Entertainment alongside Rob Reiner, Scheinman, 75, constructed a six-bedroom, nine-bathroom home in the prestigious Lower Mandeville Canyon section of Brentwood. The property, a collaborative effort with Los Angeles architects Rockefeller Kempel,

boasts a contemporary design, covering 7,200 square feet. The home has a boxy look, and Scheinman’s brother Adam is an investor in the project.

“This is the third house my brother and I have built together,” Scheinman revealed. “Once I was out of the film business, I thought this was a nice creative outlet.”

Completed after five years of construction, the custom-built residence officially entered the market last week with a listed price of $17.75 million. The exclusive listing is managed by David Kramer of Hilton & Hyland/Forbes Global Properties and Paul Czako of Gussman Czako Estates.

When conceptualizing the home’s design, the Scheinman brothers sought a balance between modern aesthetics and warmth, opting for a cozy ambiance despite the presence of extensive glass elements. Adam Scheinman personally crafted the interiors, focusing on wood, stone, and color selections.

Positioned in the coveted Lower Mandeville Canyon on a small cul-de-sac, the property boasts rooftop ocean views and a strategic layout for privacy. Kramer, who

is co-listing the property, emphasized the appeal of a semi-private driveway leading to a gated entrance and a concealed garage. To further enhance privacy, the Scheinman brothers invested in landscaping, planting 150 trees and lush greenery around the property. Lower Mandeville Canyon is renowned for its elite residents, including music producer Scooter Braun, former California governor

Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Hollywood luminaries like Harrison Ford, Reese Witherspoon, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Listing agent Kramer, who previously facilitated a $53 million sale “up the street” in 2022, noted the exclusivity of the area, affirming its appeal to high-profile individuals seeking privacy and luxury in the heart of Brentwood.

Downtown Wellness Center Bridges Gap Between Psychedelics and Meditation

The solution isn’t OUT there. It’s IN there… Somewhere deep within yourself.

In the field of alternative therapies, there is an emerging interest in psychedelics and

deep meditation. However, those practices have their own limitations. Even the most fundamental forms of meditation require patience on top of long-term periods of practice in order to hone the skill. And while LSD, psilocybin, DMT and other

psychoactive drugs offer an eye-opening journey (your third eye that is), users may be vulnerable to negative episodes and loss of control to exit the trip when they want.

Reality Center, a Santa Monica-based startup bridges these gaps with what the founders term, “digital psychedelics.” Located at 1428 2nd Street, Reality Center has the calming feel of a therapist’s office, quietly removed from the bustle of the Promenade, just outside.

At one end of the treatment chamber, a relaxing space reminiscent of a massage area within a recording studio, enhanced with lysergic decor, clients meet the one who synchronizes all of the elements of a treatment, a ’Reality Manager’ who directs the session from behind a set up of controls. This person takes on the dual role of therapist and DJ. Based on co-founder Don Estes’ theory of ‘Sensory Resonance,’ which posits that the autonomic nervous system can be reset by harmonizing its various senses, the reality manager mixes the sound and visuals of the technology just right for the client to enter a nearmeditative state.

During 30 minute to hour-long sessions, a client lies on a wave table, which is basically a massage table-size waterbed filled with minerals which regulate the vibrating impedance of two 15-inch transducers (akin to subwoofers) embedded at the base. A pair of noise-canceling headphones are placed over the client’s ears, an additional small transducer (in the form of a stuffed animal dolphin) is placed over the heart and two LED visor lights are placed over the eyes. All of these elements are synchronized to the same frequency, manifesting a psychedelic-style journey for the client, while he or she closes their eyes, exuding no effort for the experience to come.

I underwent a one-hour session. I can’t recount every single emotion or interpretation I felt. But what I envisioned was a non-stop exhibition of ornate patterns featuring every shape with every shade of every color; rapidly morphing and spiraling before my eyes. At one point, it appeared as though I was propelled down a tunnel walled in colorful symmetries. At another, I hovered above what seemed like a planet surrounded by a billion specks of dust. For whatever reason, I interpreted these specks as the individual souls of every breathing organism of the universe. That we are all one, together, connected in complex ways.

But no two clients have the same experience. Often, their emotional reactions, and resulting shifts in mentality, correspond to their particular trauma or stress. For example, if a client has difficulty connecting with others, they may no longer feel that struggle after a session. These experiences often trigger tears of relief, said Reality Center Co-Founder Jonathan Chia.

A combat infantry veteran of the Iraq War, Chia founded Reality Center two years ago alongside partners Tarun Raj, Don Estes and Benji Tucker. After obtaining a degree in digital photography, he enjoyed a career photographing and directing multimedia content for some of the world’s biggest brands, celebrities, thought leaders and politicians. Like many veterans, he initially turned to drugs and alcohol as a path to self-medication. His business partner, Raj, introduced him to a better way of alleviating pain: Reiki; an energy healing technique using soft hand motions. Concurrently, he was documenting and working with nonprofits that provide experiences like - hiking with psychedelics, golf with meditation and various equestrian programs. He saw how those organizations integrated mindfulness practices that fast tracked his own well-being and did the same for entire communities. Eight years later, he made the entrepreneurial move to foster more of that healing with Reality Center.

While the center is available to the general public for a fee, it has played somewhat of a charitable role within the community. Since undergoing her own session, Dr. Gina Gallivan, Lead Clinical Psychologist for over 60 local agencies, has partnered with the center to refer clients (police, first responders, firemen, etc). According to Chia, 500 veterans in the last two years have been provided free sessions through partnerships with organizations like Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and Veteran Care Group. One segment of clientele which Reality Center has seen results from are those suffering the loss of a loved one, hoping to connect with them on the other side, but never feeling their presence or energy. Chia says one client, the widow of a police officer, couldn’t sleep since her partner was killed in the line of duty. When her session finished, she felt rejuvenated but didn’t feel she could connect with her husband. The next morning, however, she texted Chia ebullient news: Not only had she slept through the entire night, she dreamt. Not only did she dream, she dreamt of her husband. In her dream, she explained, he looked happy and told her, “I love you.”

“All of the work we have done in the Veteran community has enabled us to reach the front door of other communities like police, firefighters, first responders, doctors and clinicians,” said Chia.

Future plans include selling individual devices for customers to replicate the experience within the comfort of their home. An annual subscription for an App, along with purchases of goggles and transducers (controlled by the App), may be offered as soon as Winter of 2025. An expansion of Reality Centers is also anticipated soon across major U.S. cities.

Find Harmony at IntoMeSea: Unveiling

Santa Monica’s Quantum Wellness Hub

A Look Into the Healing Studio and Interview with Owner Jen Williams

IntoMeSea, a healing wellness studio located at 1812 Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica, radiates peacefulness and calm in a turbulent world. Owner and creator Jen Williams opened the studio in November of 2021 and is having a bit of a pop culture moment since the studio and its services were featured in the February 20 episode of Vanderpump Rules.

The building was designed by environmental architect David Hertz, a leader in sustainable architecture and regenerative design. He has decades of experience in the practice and innovation of green building; the building itself is steeped in beautiful and environmentally conscious design. If it can be said that a building has an aura, IntoMeSea’s studio has one, which is noticeable as you approach it.

I spoke with owner Jen Williams about the studio and all it offers to residents of Santa Monica and beyond.

Dolores Quintana: Tell me a little about IntoMeSea

Jen Williams: We call it Quantum Wellness Studio because we tap into wellness aspects that aren’t typically common in most other places. We have floatation therapy and energetic soaking in crystal tubs, gigantic quartz crystal tubs. We have infrared saunas. We have a halotherapy salt chamber, which is great for the microbiome of our lungs, which is on everyone’s minds since so many people are getting sick. It’s great for that and the immune system and so forth.

We also have fire and ice, which is contrast therapy with the cold plunge and the infrared sauna. We also have a cool light called a Lucia number three; it’s technically a hypnagogic light, which will put a person into the state of hypnagogia, which is the state between wakefulness and sleep, which actually stimulates alpha and theta brainwaves. It activates the pineal gland. It’s great for insomnia, anxiety and depression. It boosts serotonin levels and increases melatonin output. It’s not to be mistaken with what people think of light therapy as red light therapy; we do have red light in the infrared saunas. If needed, that’s where someone can get the red light, their boost of red light.

Dolores Quintana: So IntoMeSea has a lot of therapies that are centered on wellness, as well as events, correct? Please tell me more about the wellness events.

Jen Williams: We have an event space, and we call it the labyrinth room. There’s a gigantic labyrinth that’s been hand-painted

on the floor. The events range from a Full Moon monthly Tarot ceremony with a local tarot reader, Fabio, who is amazing, to past life regression and tea ceremonies to sound baths and breathwork.

We do a weekly breath church on Sundays. There are embodiment and movement classes inspired by movement and dance, breath work, and cacao ceremonies. It really ranges the gamut of energetic work and spirituality work. We don’t prescribe to any one type of spirituality; we like to include everything. It’s a great complement to the services because the services help integrate the work that’s done in a lot of the events.

Dolores Quintana: So you find that the events and services work together harmoniously.

Jen Williams: Very harmonious, and many times, somebody could come and have this fantastic breathwork event and experience these breakthroughs. Then, they can try a float tank and integrate that or in the crystal tub, and many of the services also work well together.

Say somebody wants to work on manifestation. They can do the Lucia Light followed by a session in a crystal tub so that whatever comes up for a person in a Lucia Light service, they can then integrate into the crystal tub service, which is about manifestation and intention setting.

Dolores Quintana: Some of the services might be useful in dealing with issues that

someone has in their lives from past events.

Jen Williams: I mean, yeah. If somebody wants to work through clearing blockages or feels stuck somewhere, the Lucia lights are great for that, as well as the crystal tub. We are not therapists; we’re not doctors. We can’t diagnose or treat any particular thing; we want to create a space to allow a person to move through their own experiences.

Dolores Quintana: Could it be used for people who may be at a place where they feel like they want to make some kind of breakthrough? Maybe they want to get through a stagnant period, say they’re low energy, or there may be a specific issue they can’t resolve. If they have repetitive thoughts about something that happened and it is bothering them, but they want just to get away, not get away from it, but help themselves process it because our brains are part of our bodies, so they affect how our body feels and functions.

Jen Williams: Absolutely. The space helps people break through old patterns or old belief systems. We also have an intimacies co-creator. Her name is Martha Lockie, and she does Akashic Records readings. You can book a reading with Martha, especially if they have repetitive patterns or something keeps showing up in their life—a type of relationship or job or, specific thought patterns, and so forth. Martha can do an Akashic Records reading, and Martha has been trained in Akashic Records readings and has been

accessing it for many years. She provides a mantra that’s practiced and so forth, and she can guide the person to pinpoint those specific things they might need assistance with. Then, they can integrate it either in a float tank in the crystal tub, with the Lucia light, or a combination of them. Some of the services have physical health aspects, but we also have energetic health aspects as well.

Dolores Quintana: Is there anything else that you might like our readers to know?

Jen Williams: We’re a green business. Everything we do is green-certified with the City of Santa Monica. We really care about the planet, and so forth, sustainability and all our, you know, as much of our packaging as we can do possibly is, you know, either biodegradable plastics or you know, like even when it comes to like our little cellophane wrappers for our Q tips and cotton, cotton pads and so forth, you know, we try to keep everything as green as possible. And if anybody wants to book, they can book directly on the website.

When I originally came up with the concept of IntoMeSea, it was really important for me to create a space where people could come and find their authenticity and connect to their authentic selves. Those people could then collectively take that sense of authenticity into the world.

One Whole Life: Health Starts in Your Gut

Los Angeles-based broth company, OWL Venice, is on a mission to heal the world. OWL stands for One Whole Life and they believe that to heal the world, you must first heal yourself, which is where their Reset cleanse comes in.

The OWL Reset combines the wisdom of Chinese medicine, ayurveda and chronobiology. On the Reset, their broth elixirs and plant-based shakes work synergistically to provide a simple, powerful way to maintain your gastrointestinal health and digestion.

Broth is an effective way to treat intestinal permeability, but OWL Venice bone broth elixirs aren’t like other traditional stock. They are free of inflammatory foods like onion and garlic, and simmered with healing herbs that reduce inflammation, heal the gut and aid in digestion. They are formulated to be sipped like tea and provide healing benefits from both the plants and bones.

While other cleanse programs deplete the body of essential nutrients, the OWL Reset is formulated to nourish the body, heal the gut and promote holistic wellness. Packed with healing herbs, minerals, collagen, protein and key superfoods, this is a modern day cleanse that helps people curb cravings and manage weight while restoring and repairing the gastrointestinal system, commonly known as the gut.

But, why reset?

OWL founder Lindsey Wilson says the word cleanse implies that you may not already be clean to begin with, but your body is actually healing itself all the time.

“Our body uses about 60% of its energy on digesting food. So, the idea of switching to an all-liquid reset is that the body is able to spend less energy digesting food and more energy doing what it does best, which is repairing and healing the body,” Wilson says.

Currently, OWL offers chicken, turkey, beef, bison and vegan mineral broth elixirs in a four-, six- and eight-day reset cleanse program to heal and seal the gut. Each day of the Reset comprises three broth elixirs and three organic mylkshakes, a nourishing blend of hemp hearts, veggies,

roots and functional herbs designed to improve digestive performance and reduce inflammation.

“Resetting helps you re-establish healthier habits and reconnect you with those hunger cues so you realize when you’re eating because you’re hungry versus when you’re eating because you’re tired, lonely, stressed or sad,” Wilson said.

“Spring and summer are the best times to have a lower caloric intake. A traditional reset I would recommend only in summer because it is hotter and the body is better able to digest raw foods,” Wilson said. “However, the OWL Reset is designed to be done year-round because of its warm broths and whole fruit and vegetable shakes.”

OWL products are void of common food

A beneficial time to detoxify the body and tap into increased energy and confidence, clearer skin, reduced stress, stable adrenals and a healthier lifestyle, is spring, right around the corner.

allergens such as gluten, dairy, garlic, nuts, onion, added sugar and inflammatory ingredients. Using chronobiology, the idea of eating foods at a specific time of day based on a living organism’s utilization of

light as indirect energy, each ingredient in the reset intentionally considers alignment with circadian rhythm. This supports prime digestion and absorption of nutrients morning, afternoon and evening.

If you feel hungry during the reset, OWL includes a list of cleanse-approved foods that won’t negate the benefits of the Reset. Because there’s no one-size-fitsall approach to health and nutrition, OWL encourages listening to your body and finding routines, practices and preferences that work for you.

“The OWL Reset is designed for bioindividuality, taking into account those who have to follow various restrictive diets or protocols to heal digestive issues, those with autoimmune conditions, or anyone that has a compromised gut. We work with a specific list of ingredients to make the reset as approachable as possible,” Wilson said.

Mayor Bass Unveils Permanent Al

Fresco Dining Program with Financial Support for Restaurants

Permament Al Fresco Progam Application Process is Now Open For All

Mayor Karen Bass has announced the commencement of applications for the permanent Al Fresco outdoor dining program, allowing restaurant owners to continue offering outdoor dining options. Initially established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the outdoor dining initiative has proven popular, leading the city to make it a permanent fixture. Alongside this announcement, Mayor Bass unveiled financial relief measures to support businesses in sustaining their participation in the program.

We previously reported on the city council vote on the measure that made this program possible after Westside restaurant Open Face Food Shop sent out a distress call asking food lovers to let the city council members know that they wanted the

program to continue.

In her statement, Mayor Bass emphasized the importance of this program as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to bolster small businesses, generate employment opportunities, and enhance the vibrancy of local neighborhoods. The move aims to assist restaurants, cafes, and eateries in navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic and beyond.

Christy Vega, owner of Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, expressed enthusiasm for the permanent program, highlighting the potential positive impact on Los Angeles restaurants. Vega sees Al Fresco Dining as a significant win for the city, leveraging its favorable weather and scenic appeal to become the premier destination for outdoor dining in the nation.

Last year, Mayor Bass directed various departments to collaborate in developing the approved permanent program, with a focus on supporting small businesses and integrating them into policy development. According to a city survey of participating owners, 90% of businesses consider their outdoor dining area integral to their

operations and identity, while 97% express interest in maintaining permanent outdoor dining spaces.

Businesses interested in participating in the permanent Al Fresco program can access information and resources through the Online Al Fresco Guide, including requirements, anticipated costs, and frequently asked questions. Assistance is also available through Al Fresco Assistance Helplines, City BusinessSource Centers, and Al Fresco Webinars held monthly from February to June 2024.

To ensure equal access for customers with disabilities in the Public Right-ofWay, business owners are encouraged to

refer to the L.A. Al Fresco Disabled Access Toolkit. Chef Theresa Montaño, owner of Otoño restaurant in Highland Park, shared her positive experience with Al Fresco, describing it as a lifeline for her restaurant that brought vibrancy back to the streets post-COVID.

Small business owners applying for a revocable permit required for outdoor dining will automatically be considered for the Fee Relief Program. Early application is encouraged to avail the fee relief and allow sufficient time for processing and inspections. The Mayor’s fee relief program is expected to benefit approximately 1,800 small businesses in Los Angeles.

Students Rally Against Starbucks: Petitions Demand Removal from Local Campuses

Unified Push Challenges

Starbucks Amid Claims of UnionBusting

Students from two local universities, UCLA and UCR, have mobilized to petition the removal of Starbucks stores from their campuses, citing concerns over alleged union-busting tactics employed by the coffee giant, as reported by KTLA 5. The Los Angeles Daily News reported that students in Westwood intended to personally deliver a petition to the board of directors for Associated Students UCLA, bearing 700 signatures urging the termination of the university’s licensing agreement with Starbucks on Tuesday.

This student-driven initiative is a manifestation of solidarity with Starbucks

employees nationwide who are asserting their rights amid claims of union-busting practices by the company. The push for unionization has gained momentum on a national scale, with Workers United gaining support from employees at over 300 Starbucks locations, advocating for improved wages, enhanced staffing levels, and consistent scheduling.

Starbucks has faced accusations in recent years of strategically closing stores and laying off employees engaged in unionizing efforts. Following a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board, the federal government may compel the reopening of 23 stores, including six in Los Angeles, amid allegations that these closures were orchestrated to impede unionization efforts.

In response to these developments, a Starbucks spokesperson informed KTLA that the closed Los Angeles locations had no employees affiliated with Workers United or were involved in any known union activities.

The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to respecting employees’ rights to organize, engage

in lawful union activities, and bargain collectively without fear of reprisal. The statement underscored Starbucks’ goal of reaching ratified contracts for unionrepresented stores by 2024.

However, a worker at one of the Los Angeles locations, speaking to KTLA in December, claimed that employee layoffs were administered as punitive measures for engaging in unionization efforts.

Beverly Hills Police Resolve Armed Hotel Incident at Waldorf Astoria

Swift action prevents potential tragedy with Armed Suspect

A “keep the peace” call at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel on Wilshire Blvd. took an unexpected turn on Thursday morning, leading Beverly Hills Police officers to respond.

At approximately 9:39 a.m., officers were dispatched to 9850 Wilshire Blvd. following a request from hotel security for a welfare check on a male guest, whom they suspected might be armed. Before law enforcement arrived, hotel security, acting on concern, knocked on the guest’s door only to hear a chilling response, “I’m going to shoot through the door!”

The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) deployed a drone to assess the situation. The drone captured visuals of the suspect brandishing a firearm on the hotel balcony. In addition to deploying Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) personnel, Crisis Negotiation (CNT) personnel, detectives, and mutual aid resources, the BHPD Real Time Watch Center kept a vigilant eye on the unfolding events.

As resources converged on the scene, crisis negotiators prepared to communicate with the armed individual. Prioritizing the safety of all involved, officers requested the suspect exit his room unarmed, a demand he willingly complied with, leading to a peaceful resolution. The suspect was then safely taken into custody.

The suspect, Joseph Leonardi, a 41-yearold from Woodland Hills, California, was booked on the following charges: PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon in possession of a

firearm and PC 246.3 – Negligent discharge of a firearm, according to a press release from Lieutenant Andrew Myers, Beverly Hills Police Department, Public Information Officer

No injuries were reported during the

incident, and hotel guests were evacuated safely, according to CBS News. Preliminary findings from the investigation conducted by detectives revealed that the suspect was a convicted felon who had discharged several rounds within his hotel room.

Oklahoma Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening LA Schools with Bomb Attacks and Shootings

Angry Man Pleads Guilty To Making Chilling Threats Against Children and Schools

Marcus Jamal Sanchez, 45, also known as “Marcus James Buchanan,” from Blackwell, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty to a federal criminal charge for making bomb threats to five Los Angeles schools, including two elementary schools. The threats included a chilling plan to shoot children as they exited one of the elementary schools.

Sanchez entered a guilty plea to one count of making a threat through interstate

commerce to damage and destroy buildings using fire and explosives. He grew up in Los Angeles but currently resides in Oklahoma.

Arrested in June 2022, Sanchez has been free on bond since July 2022. The guilty plea was made on February 16.

United States Attorney Martin Estrada stated, “Sanchez put children, teachers, and staff at risk through his reckless and irresponsible actions. Schools should be safe havens for our kids, and my office will use the force of federal law – when necessary – to prosecute individuals who threaten the educational safety of our young people.”

According to the plea agreement, in less than two hours on February 28, 2022, Sanchez telephoned bomb threats to two elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school in Los Angeles. One of the elementary schools received a specific threat to shoot children as they exited the building.

The schools were Overland Elementary in Cheviot Hills, Vine Street Elementary, Fairfax High, Bancroft Middle School, and Le Conte Middle School in the Hollywood area.

In subsequent threats on April 27 and 28, Sanchez targeted two Los Angeles schools he had previously threatened, explicitly threatening to shoot and kill children at other schools. One call on April 27 mentioned a bomb at an elementary school, prompting a lockdown and police search, finding no explosives.

On April 28, Sanchez called the same school again, claiming a pipe bomb was placed at the school’s address. The school was locked down, and a search yielded no explosives. That day, he also threatened a different elementary school with a shooting, resulting in lockdown but no discovery of explosives.

United States District Judge Josephine L. Staton has scheduled a sentencing hearing for June 7, where Sanchez could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. The FBI and the Los Angeles School Police Department investigated the case.

“The depraved act of making death threats to vulnerable schoolchildren is incomprehensible to most and will not be tolerated by the FBI, nor the American people,” said Amir Ehsaei, Acting Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
