Luxurious Equestrian Estate “Paradise Found” Hits the Market in Sullivan Canyon David Calvert-Jones Lists Renovated Cliff May Residence for $21.5 Million By Dolores Quintana Los Angeles-based businessman David Calvert-Jones is parting ways after 14 years with his longtime residence in the horse-friendly Sullivan Canyon community on the Brentwood and Pacific Palisades border, as reported by The Robb Report. The Australian-born nephew of billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his wife Karina are asking just under $21.5 million for their updated mansion, initially acquired for just over $4 million. The residence, previously owned by Hollywood actress and activist Maxine Cooper for nearly fifty years, was made famous by her role as Mike Hammer’s secretary, Velda, in the 1955 film noir classic Kiss Me Deadly. Originally built and designed in the early ’40s by noted architect Cliff May, the equestrian property underwent an extensive renovation and expansion during the Calvert-Joneses’

tenure. The five-bedroom, five-bath house spans over 6,200 square feet of split-level living space with stone and rustic hardwood floors, vaulted wood-beam ceilings, custom built-ins, and steel-framed windows and doors with views of the serene gardens. Situated on a leafy cul-de-sac parcel within the Riviera Ranch enclave, the offwhite stucco and stone structure, roofed with terra cotta tiles, is known as “Paradise Found.” Walls screen the estate, and a

gated driveway is lined with mature olive trees. The interior features a fireside living room that doubles as a screening room, a formal dining room, a glass-lined breakfast room, and a gourmet kitchen with high-end stainless appliances. The primary bedroom suite boasts a sitting area, a walk-in closet, and a spa-like bath with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a separate shower. Exterior amenities include a large detached guesthouse, a horse stable, a central courtyard with a swimming pool,

an open-air cabana with a fireplace, al fresco lounging spots, and a spacious motor court with an attached three-car garage. The property, originally purchased for $122,500 by Maxine Cooper and her husband Sy Gomberg in the mid-’60s, has transformed into a luxurious and inviting residence during the Calvert-Joneses’ ownership. Drew Fenton and Bjorn Farrugia of Carolwood Estates and Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker Realty are the listing agents.

Banc of California Makes Los Angeles its Headquarters, Commits $1 Million to Boost Small Business CEO Jared Wolff Announces Donation to Mayor’s Program at Joint Press Conference By Dolores Quintana Banc of California, Inc. has officially chosen Los Angeles as its new headquarters, announced CEO Jared Wolff in a joint press conference with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The decision aligns with Banc of California’s commitment to serving the dynamic Los Angeles business community. The press conference occurred in front

of the Banc of California headquarters at 11611 San Vicente Blvd. in Los Angeles. “As a native Angeleno, I know the power and promise of Los Angeles and the entrepreneurs and businesses that make it great,” stated Wolff. “Designating Los Angeles as our headquarters aligns with our mission as California’s leading business bank to further support this vibrant business community.” Mayor Bass expressed enthusiasm about Banc of California’s presence, affirming that Los Angeles is open for business, with City Hall advocating streamlining processes for businesses. Wolff also revealed a $1 million donation from Banc of California to the Mayor’s Contract Financing Assistance Program (CFAP), benefiting small- and medium-sized businesses competing for government contracts. “In recognition of our partnership with the city, Banc of California is very pleased to make a $1 million contribution to Mayor

Bass’ Contract Financing Assistance Program,” Wolff added. “We are proud to provide financial support to businesses, creating jobs, driving business forward, and enriching the communities where we live and work.” The CFAP facilitates access to capital for smaller businesses by using project agreements as collateral for low-interest loans before project completion. Banc of California’s contribution expands the program, launching a fund in early 2024 that extends beyond construction contracts, supporting businesses seeking government contracts, particularly in anticipation of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Mayor Bass highlighted the impact of Banc of California’s contribution, stating, “This million dollars... really will make a difference between businesses being able to survive and businesses being able to do business with the city of Los Angeles.” Formerly headquartered in Santa Ana,

California, Banc of California opened an office in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in 2021. The decision to designate Los Angeles as the new headquarters follows the successful completion of the merger with PacWest Bancorp on November 30, establishing Banc of California as the third-largest bank headquartered in California.

City Denies That Upgrades Are Needed Amidst LA’s Largest Rent-Controlled Housing Eviction in 40 Years

Barrington Plaza Evictions Coincide with Lavish Makeover Plans By Dolores Quintana

As we have reported previously, tenants of the Barrington Plaza Apartments complex were served with eviction notices in May of this year in a controversial decision. The property owner, Douglas Emmett Inc., stated in a press release, as part of a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, that the evacuation was necessary to facilitate mandated fire safety upgrades imposed by the city of Los Angeles. Fires in 2013 and 2020 damaged the building, which led to eight floors of one of the buildings being declared uninhabitable. According to the owner, the city

conditioned permit approval for restoring the fire-damaged floors by installing sprinklers and additional safety equipment, prompting the evacuation of all three towers. The estimated cost for the required work surpassed $300 million, with completion anticipated to take several years. The Barrington Plaza Tenant Association’s press release states that Barrington Plaza’s corporate landlord, Douglas Emmett, is currently serving Unlawful Detainers to tenants whom they did not approve for extensions and could not vacate the premises by the September 5th Ellis Act eviction deadline. When asked, the BP Tenant Association responded via email that the Ellis Act is a California state law allowing landlords to evict tenants in rent-controlled units if they are permanently leaving the rental business and that the court will decide on the outcome. They also added that the Barrington Plaza Ellis Act Eviction has been the subject of multiple discussions in the chambers of the Los Angeles City Council, but the City Council has gone silent since.

The Barrington Plaza Tenants Association and the Coalition for Economic Survival are assisting these tenants with their “Notice of Related Case,” which is part of the earlierfiled motion to overturn our May 8, 2024 eviction, scheduled for trial in Santa Monica Court on February 13, 2024. The City of West Hollywood and the City of Santa Monica have issued resolutions supporting The Barrington Plaza residents. West Hollywood’s resolution reminds us that this is the largest mass eviction since the eviction of the residents of Chavez Ravine. It also states that the city has supported multiple attempts to repeal the Ellis Act. The City of Santa Monica’s resolution states,“The City Council of Santa Monica implores Barrington Plaza owner Douglas Emmett, Inc., a company headquartered in Santa Monica, to honor the City’s commitment to protecting renters’ rights by not evicting the tenants of Barrington Plaza or implores Barrington Plaza owner Douglas Emmett, Inc. to offer the tenants the right to return to their units at the lawful rent in effect at the time the notice of intent to withdraw the accommodations was filed…” The City Council of Santa Monica adds,” The City Council of Santa Monica implores Barrington Plaza owner Douglas Emmett, Inc. to offer the tenants the right to return to their units at the lawful rent in effect at the time the notice of intent to withdraw the

accommodations was filed...” Robert Lawrence, a Barrington Plaza tenant who is scheduled to be evicted in April 2024, said, as quoted by Capitol and Main.com, “This is going to be premiere property on the Westside, three state-of-theart high-rises with all the amenities. They’re going to charge, you know, double or triple the rents.” As it is, Lawrence currently pays $2,400 each month for his one-bedroom apartment in Barrington Plaza. Contrary to the company’s assertions made to the City Council and investors, a city spokesperson contradicted the purported requirements according to Capitol and Main. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety clarified that the mentioned enhancements were neither requested nor mandated. Todd Golden, business manager for Sprinkler Fitters U.A. Local Union 709, said, as quoted by Capitol and Main.com, “I’ve just never heard of such a thing that they have to evacuate all three buildings. It’s not part of what we do.” The Los Angeles Department of City Planning approved plans on May 11 for exterior remodeling, and shortly thereafter, Douglas Emmett issued the Ellis Act eviction notices. According to Capitol and Main, the proposed “Landmark Plaza” includes new amenities, balconies, landscaped gardens, glazed windows, a state-of-the-art gym, updated storefronts, and a refurbished pool area with cabanas. Eric Rose, the spokesman for Douglas Emmett, told Capitol and Main.com, “At this time, the owners of Barrington Plaza are removing the units from the market and have options as to how those units will change, be rehabilitated through new life safety measures or become something different.”

By Dolores Quintana On Saturday, December 16, in a brazen daylight robbery around 9:40 a.m., multiple people were robbed at the ATM at Wells Fargo atm West Pico Blvd and Glendon Avenue, according to a post on Nextdoor and witness statements. The robber was described as being tall, about 6’3, black, and wearing all-black clothing with a hoodie. Witnesses said that he might have been wearing a du-rag underneath the hoodie but wasn’t wearing a mask. He was carrying a gun, which he pointed at the temple of a male customer at the ATM. A witness said that she was trying to pull into the Wells Fargo parking lot, and the suspect’s car was blocking the entrance. When he moved his car and parked, she said that he ran towards the people using the ATM and pulled his gun. The male victim was in his forties, and the other victim was a woman in her 30s. The witness pulled into another area and immediately called 911. The LAPD arrived quickly after the call. The woman who was robbed stated that she thought the suspect may have been in his 20s, and he put the gun to the head of the man at the other ATM and demanded his money. He demanded money from her, and she gave him the $300 that she had since she hadn’t even started using the ATM. The man was unable to access his account because he was so nervous. There was no security at the ATM; from all accounts, the branch is normally a busy one. Witnesses said that he also may have attempted to rob people sitting in their cars

Suspect in Custody: Los Angeles Man Linked to Serial Homeless Murders and San Dimas Slaying Authorities Seek Information on Additional Crimes Suspect May Have Committed By Dolores Quintana On December 1, a press conference was held by the Los Angeles Police Department about a series of three separate murders that occurred between November 26, 2023, and November 29, 2023, all victims being homeless. The authorities’ belief was that a serial killer of unhoused residents of the city might be at work. In response to the crisis, Mayor Karen Bass stated, “Our region is mobilizing to respond to this issue. We will work tirelessly to find the individual responsible, arrest them, and hold them accountable.” Chief Michel Moore affirmed that the LAPD is utilizing all available resources to investigate, and

District Attorney George Gascón expressed commitment to the pursuit of justice. A joint task force was formed to investigate these heinous and disturbing crimes. The next day, Saturday, December 2, another surprise press conference was called, and during the conference, the announcement was made that a suspect in the murders was already in custody. The suspect is Jerrid Joseph Powell, a 33-year-old Los Angeles man who was already in custody for a San Dimas follow-home robbery turned homicide. He has now been formally arrested as the suspect in the killings of three homeless men in separate shootings this week, according to LAPD Chief Michel Moore. The shootings spanned four days, starting on Sunday, Nov. 26, in the southeast area of Los Angeles. The victims include 37-year-old Jose Vamos, 62-year-old Mark Diggs, and a 52-year-old man who has not been identified pending notification of his relatives. Powell is also connected to the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Nicholas Simbolon in San Dimas. Surveillance footage revealed Powell following Simbolon from a charging station, robbing, and shooting him in his garage. Simbolon was an employee of the County of Los Angeles who lived in San

Well Marriage Center Aims to Improve Relationships with 2 Los Angeles Locations By Susan Payne A new marriage counseling center in Los Angeles is hoping to change how the therapeutic world handles relationships. Well Marriage Center, a therapist-owned counseling practice located in West Los Angeles and Pasadena, is helping couples build relationship skills, heal relationship trauma, understand their attachment styles and rekindle intimacy and connection they might have thought was too far gone. The Center has locations in seven states and opened its California offices this year. Welcoming all relationships, Well Marriage is a team of licensed, professional therapists offering specialized couples counseling, individual therapy, and relationship wellness programs. “We hope that offering a specialty in relationship support can help couples and families in our local communities. Even though many therapists offer marriage counseling, very few are specialized in it,” said Chet Denlinger, CEO of Well Marriage Center. “We tend to think that healthy relationships and deeper connections with others can make the world a better place.” Ninety percent of couples who complete therapy with a highly trained couples therapist report an increase in their emotional well-being and have more comfort in their relationship, according to the American Association of Marriage and

Family Therapists. Well Marriage Center has found that not one approach fits all couples, so the therapists are uniquely equipped in the study of relationship therapy approaches to help all couples — married or not. “We work from a strengths-based foundation, which means we’re immediately looking for ways couples already connect well, or used to connect well, and ways that couples have the capacity for support and success,” Denlinger said. Instead of “tell me about the problem,” the first question a Well Marriage therapist will ask is, “Tell me about how the two of you met and what attracted you to each other initially?” “It’s a subtle shift that many general practitioner therapists haven’t made, but being strengths-based is a foundational pillar we believe in. It allows us to leverage a couple’s strengths from the start, which helps set them up for success and reminds them they’re on the same team,” Denlinger said. Above and beyond therapeutic care, Well Marriage Center counselors cover all bases for couples’ therapy: premarital, marital and dating therapy, individuals wanting a better relationship with themselves, services for couples who have been together for a time, and non-traditional relationships. Well Marriage Center counselors are skilled in helping couples navigate life changes,

heavy conflict, lack of communication, grief, trauma, decreased sexual intimacy, affairs and infidelity and separation or divorce adjustment. “We’re very inclusive in our services and approach for any relationship scenarios that people bring to the table. Our skills transcend traditional notions of ‘marriage counseling’ to encompass any and all relational issues a person may want to work out. We focus on the bonds between people and the relationship people have with themselves. Any person or couple wanting to grow in an emotional or relational context can find a valuable resource in us,” Denlinger added. Generally, the results vary depending on the therapist, but between 70-90% of

couples find therapy beneficial. While the practice takes work and dedication, it’s highly effective for most couples. You’ll find at Well Marriage Center, therapists deeply care for your relationships and want them to succeed. “In relationships, sometimes we’re afraid of being vulnerable and don’t even realize it’s because of our childhood. Sometimes we have a hard time hearing our partner through different communication styles. Sometimes it’s hard to forgive and begin again. We want to change that for you,” Denlinger said. The Center offers inperson couples therapy and virtual couples counseling. For more information on Well Marriage Center, or to find a location near you, visit www.wellmarriagecenter.com.

The majestic private estate epitomizes the tranquility and elegance of classic Beverly Hills living. The couple rented the estate after their marriage in 1958 after meeting during the Broadway production of “Picnic” in 1953.

Brentwood Beat: Sure, Why Not? By Jeff Hall Hmm. It’s that time of year -- making a list and checking it twice and all that. I have a list of stories I intended to write this year but never quite got to them. Let me play a little catchup before it’s too late. Andy Bales discusses his thoughts on how to address homelessness at a special session of the Brentwood Community Council. The meeting was held at Kaufman Library. Reverend Andy Bales, executive director of the Union Rescue Mission, gave a talk to the Brentwood Community Council earlier this year. He has huge experience when it comes to dealing with the issue of homelessness. He has always been firm in his approach: Addicts need to go cold turkey and get clean. Those with mental health issues need to get help. Going too easy on people doesn’t help them. Tough love is required. Formerly homeless individuals need structure. Leaving homeless people on the streets too long is the worst thing we can do – the damage done to the individual becomes worse and worse – and the recovery will be that much harder and take much longer. Given Andy’s track record of success, it’s hard to argue with him. Andy is moving back to the Midwest after spending many years on Skid Row.

This will be a big loss for Los Angeles, but Andy deserves a break. Good luck, Reverend Bales! You will be missed! Thank you for all you have done for Los Angeles – and all the individuals you helped along the way. More and more housing for formerly homeless veterans is opening up on the VA campus. I know everyone wishes more progress could be made faster, but let’s at least acknowledge the good that is happening. Brentwood resident Tom Safran and his team, including his son, Jordan Pynes, are playing a huge role in all this. Sarah Williams of Century; Tess Banko of the Veterans Collective, Steve Peck, head of USVets; and Nicole Negrette, also of USVets, attended the “one year later” Thanksgiving celebration at Building 207 on the VA campus. I recently attended a Thanksgiving gathering at Building 207 on the VA campus, which opened almost exactly a year before. Building 207 has 60 units of beautiful housing for formerly homeless veterans. Earlier this year, Arnold Schwarzenegger donated 25 tiny homes that are now parked on the west side of the VA property. Every tiny bit adds up. In October, several gathered over at the Brentwood Country Club to celebrate the formation of the Brentwood Community

Council 25 years before. Former CD11 City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski, original founder of the BCC, was there; it was good to see her. Cindy Miscikowski started the Brentwood Community Council 25 years ago and attended the “25-year later” celebration. Recently, Traci Park held a “one year later” celebration at the Westchester district office for those who helped her with her 2022 election campaign. She did something similar to celebrate the holidays. Mayor Karen Bass showed up.

Jacob Burman of Traci Park’s staff made a great Santa Claus at a recent holiday party held at the CD11 Westchester office. Traci made the point that a LOT of progress has been made in the last year, with homeless encampments all over CD11 now having been cleared. Many formerly unsheltered are now in temporary or

even permanent housing. This progress is obvious for all to see. Great work, Traci! Bob Inadomi, Mike Adams, and Traci Park at a recent gathering held inside Vicente Foods, honoring Vicente Foods’ 75th anniversary. Inadomi is the GM; Mike Adams, still active at the store, is the son of the original owners. Traci Park, CD11 councilwoman, handed out certificates of recognition. My good friend Bob Inadomi, general manager at Vicente Foods, was recently honored by Traci Park alongside Mike Adams, whose parents started Vicente Foods 75 years ago. I was there; it was a lot of fun. Bob has been GM for 25 years now; I’ve known him since he first arrived. Vicente Foods has been a steady advertiser in the Brentwood News from the very beginning. Bob is very wise and observant. If you ever want to know what’s really going on in Brentwood, ask Bob. I said to Bob during the gathering, “We should do a selfie.” A nearby shopper immediately jumped behind us and asked, “Can I be in it, too?” A Vicente Foods shopper joined our selfie. We said, “Sure. Why not?” Maybe that should be our mantra in 2024: Sure, why not? Happy holidays, all!

Iconic Jewish Bakery, Diamond Bakery, Bids Farewell to Fairfax Ave After 77 Years Diamond Bakery Promises Continuation of Legacy After 77 Years of Business By Keemia Zhang Diamond Bakery, a Jewish bakery on Fairfax Ave, has announced the closure of its retail location after 77 years of operation. Assuring loyal customers that “this is not a goodbye,” the bakery will provide its goods wholesale to “the many restaurants and cafes that carry our products” across the city through Bread Los Angeles. The bakery’s new business plan will also place Diamond Bakery products in grocery stores. The move follows two years of efforts to keep the location open. “We have invested innumerable hours, financial resources, and our hearts and souls in keeping the store open,” reads a message posted on the bakery’s website. The

decision was made based on “a combination of factors,” including the dilapidation of the current building. Rooted in Jewish history, Diamond Bakery was founded by Jack and Betty Segal in 1946 before being sold to the Lottman and Rubenstein - immigrant couples who had met in Auschwitz. The bakery has provided iconic cultural recipes, such as challah, babka cookies, Corn Rye,

and their “signature” Racetrack pastry for decades of customers. “The Diamond Bakery brand and legacy will never end,” promises the statement. “We will miss seeing your familiar smiling faces and hope there will be a reason to open our doors again.” Customers can “stay tuned for great news” from Diamond Bakery’s website and social media pages.

Irish rock star Bono, known for his performances with U2, is not only making waves on the Las Vegas stage but is also linked to a notable architectural venture in Los Angeles. Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, a substantial residence has been taking shape for years, finally catching the attention of commuters in Hollywood as the estate takes shape. Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that Bono is an investor in this project, which features a sprawling foundation and an elevated driveway and encompasses a triangular-shaped main house, a guest house, and a pool. Despite attempts to reach out, representatives for Bono and Plus Development Group, the project’s developer led by architect Noah

Walker, have remained tight-lipped on the matter. The musician, currently engaged in a series of concerts at the Sphere in Las Vegas from December 2023 through February 2024, has reportedly been observed on the street monitoring the progress of the Hollywood Hills residence, according to a neighbor. This mansion is yet another spec house that has emerged in the area recently. Notable examples include the Stanley House, featuring interiors by Lenny Kravitz, which sold for $33 million in 2018, and the Thunderball-inspired Californication House, a contemporary mansion that celebrity real estate agents Rayni and Branden Williams, along with Crest Real Estate founder Jason Somers developed.
