ACCIDENTAL COLLECTOR I was thrilled to see your cover story for the Feb. 3-9 issue—almost as thrilled as I was last year to find the nearby Little Free Library down on the corner of Alto Street

by La Familia Medical Center next to the Community Garden. It proved a wonderful, gradual way to pay forward my accidental accumulation of books from many decades. Each time I head for the grocery store (the only outings in my solitary, but happy and productive, life), I drop off a couple books there—anything from great world literature to esoteric nonfiction to cartoon collections—and many times find a book or two I’d never have encountered otherwise or one I’d always wanted to read....I regret not having any books in Spanish to share with the many vecinos in my neighborhood. Since this is clearly an important matter of public education, maybe the Santa Fe school district should figure out a way to put books en español on LFL’s shelves.

Reach Out and Read (reachoutandread.org) was founded by pediatricians in 1989. At every well-child check-up between the ages of 6 months and 5 years, the child is given a brand new, developmentally appropriate book. Books are available in many languages.

The book is incorporated into the wellchild visit: Seeing how the child relates to the book allows observation of developmental skills. By reading to the child, the doctor or nurse models reading aloud and can assure the parent that it’s normal for a 6-month-old to put a book in her mouth or advise that when an impatient 2-year-old turns the pages faster than a parent can read, the parent should just good-naturedly comment on the pictures and ask questions, “Is there a puppy?

Where’s the puppy? Yes! There’s the puppy!

What do you think the puppy is going to do?”

The book goes home with the child, adding to their growing home library. And the magic of an adult reading to a child is nurtured.

Pandemic Barriers

There were many barriers for survivors to reach out in the manner they would have done under normal circumstances

court-ordered counseling and more calls to crisis hotlines. Estrellas says this is a peek into the domestic violence that law enforcement data doesn’t capture.

The Santa Fe Police Department saw a 12% decrease in domestic violence cases from 2019 to 2020, according to calculations the department provided at SFR’s request.

But the shelter’s Path to Peace program—court-ordered classes for convicted offenders—showed a 5.7% increase in the number of participants in 2020 over 2019 from 132 to 140, as well as a 17.7% increase in crisis calls.

“The good news is that during the pandemic, there were police arrests and court cases,” Estrellas says. “This shows a slight increase in those who were court-ordered

he call came in to Esperanza Shelter’s hotline in the midst of the pandemic—the woman had run into a grocery store and borrowed a stranger’s phone to call for help. Her abuser was waiting outside. She didn’t have a lot of time.

It wasn’t enough.

The woman “panicked and hung up because, she said, ‘He only sent me in for eggs and I’ve already been too long,’ and then we never heard back from her,” Anji Estrellas, executive director of the Esperanza Shelter, tells SFR, recounting the call. “And the abuse she described was really severe.”

When COVID-19 first spread its tentacles across the country last spring, professionals who work with victims warned of increased danger for those living with or near their abusers.

Nearly a year later, advocates say anecdotes bear out their dire predictions, as exemplified in the story recounted by Estrellas.

Yet, figures from police show a decrease in domestic violence cases.

COVID-19 brought new roadblocks to victims of interpersonal violence: less time and space to call for help and more violent abuse kindled by pandemic stressors. Victims may also decide to stay with an abuser to avoid the possible spread of COVID-19 in a shelter. And there are simply fewer available jobs in the state now to help survivors gain financial independence.

In Santa Fe, the affordable housing shortage has also likely contributed to victims deciding not to leave a bad situation. There are far too few homes within reach of Santa Feans, particularly those in the low to middle income bracket, according to Tomás Rivera, director of the Chainbreaker Collective, a nonprofit community organization.

And even the units that are available are often studio apartments—not suitable for a mother and children, for example.

Estrellas adds that many of her clients are on a two- to three-year waiting list for federal housing vouchers.

These hurdles to safety and support are feeding a data trend in major cities across the US: declining domestic violence reports that may be hiding a wave of violence behind closed doors.

In Santa Fe, the police department had fewer domestic violence cases in 2020 compared to 2019. At the same time, there’s an increase in offenders in

to work with us, so that also shows the rise of the violence during the pandemic.”

However, 2020 saw drops in the numbers of residential clients and overall survivors assisted by Esperanza.

The shelter attributes the decline in residential clients and survivors in part to using alternate housing outside of the shelter. (The shelter has too many communal spaces for a pandemic world.) The shelter also put a new policy in place that allows survivors to stay longer—until they find housing or get a voucher from the government.

Other cities echo a similar decline in reports to law enforcement. The Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization focused on the criminal legal system, examined police reports in Chicago, Austin, and Chandler, Arizona, from March through April 2020, and found that domestic violence rates dropped in those cities while calls for help increased—pointing out

fewer people may actually file a report after a call is made.

“What COVID has really brought is the isolation, the stress, the at-home school learning, people losing their jobs to the food security issues,” Marcos Zubia, director of development at Esperanza Shelter, tells SFR. “All those sorts of things are playing into what we’re seeing in the sense that…when there’s stress in the household, that causes the domestic violence cases to increase.”

But even when a situation has become so violent it feels untenable, victims may have stayed with their abuser more often in 2020 because of a cost-benefit analysis.

What is more dangerous: COVID-19 or violence at home?

María José Rodríguez Cádiz, executive director of the Solace Crisis Treatment Center, says victims have had to make even harder choices in the past year.

“Is it safer to reach out or to bear the violence? Is it safer to stay home than to be in a different environment?” Cádiz says. “Do I know, as a survivor, what to do in a time of lockdown? All of those variables can very well explain the numbers that we’re looking at.”

Solace Crisis Treatment Center, a nonprofit that offers victim advocacy and sexual violence prevention programs, also saw a drop in the total number of violent crime survivors assisted: 632 people in 2019 and 493 people in 2020—a 21% decrease.

Meanwhile, several bills are moving through this year’s legislative session that could increase protection for survivors.

Gwyn Kaitis, director of policy with the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says the organization is working on Senate Bill 36, which would allow children and incapacitated adults to testify in criminal cases via remote video.

The coalition also supports Senate Bill 92, which would amend the missing persons act to allow victims of domestic violence to request confidentiality in their location if they are found and do not want their location known.

Cádiz, too, is closely following proposals that could support survivors of sexual assault and support rape crisis centers.

For now, she hopes both data and context will help the community understand the prevalence of interpersonal violence in a pandemic world.

“There were many barriers for survivors to reach out in the manner they would have done under normal circumstances,” Cádiz tells SFR. “And that, to me, is the most troubling thing—that the numbers that we have are actually just a fraction of what was taking place in reality.”

e don’t want to be in the habit of pointing out our own shortcomings, but we had to skip the Love & Sex issue last year. See, there was the rumored pandemic hurtling toward our little city, and we ultimately had to make a tough judgement call. It didn’t sit right, though, so we spent the following 10-ish months daydreaming of the day we’d be able to email our official Love & Sex illustrator Shelby Criswell and say, “Do it.” And so we did. We’re particularly proud of this year’s issue, too, as it’s chock-full o’ sex workers. They’re actual people, dear readers—and the work is actual work.

What We Learn About Intimacy From a Pandemic Expand your expectations to a broader sense of COVID-era engagement

L

earning new ways to build intimacy in our lives is a skill that can help deepen our understanding of ourselves and the relationships we maintain. These skills are often used by people in long-distance and non-monogamous relationships, but if there’s a hopeful silver lining to the pandemic shuffle, it’s that more people are using them.

“Before [the pandemic], texting was a random thing that wasn’t taken as serious because it was ‘better’ to be in person,” says one Albuquerque resident who goes by BKBN. “While I would rather be in person with people, since we can’t, I value someone who takes time to send a thoughtful message.”

Texting and messaging are just two of the many tools people are using more to cultivate and maintain intimacy. At a time when we might want and need the support of others most, we’re being challenged to change how we meet our needs.

Still, in the midst of all of the chaos, we must also attend to our mental health.

It’s important to understand that how you connect with someone on Tuesday might be different from how you want to connect on Friday.

This is also true about sex, desire and relationships. If we can learn to communicate and negotiate about what does and doesn’t feel good in a given moment, those skills will be useful in other areas of our lives. Some days, for example, you’ll find you’ve been staring at a computer

screen for so long, you just can’t anymore. That’s when it might be a good plan to reach for phone/audio connections— or for texting, sexting, sending lewds/ nudes via email, etc. With social distancing the norm, we’re being asked to choose specific tools for unique moments, and to ask ourselves and others what would feel good right now.

BKBN further tells SFR the pandemic has helped him explore how to be vulnerable via text; a relatively new concept, but one that is yielding surprisingly rewarding and borderline familiar results.

“I think I’ve relearned connecting with people in a way that leads to community,” he says. “While I can’t say the pandemic is good, it did force me to rebuild intimacy skills and think about how to keep them going forward.”

Even when we’re making connections that can’t be in person, those details make the connection more rich.

“I started sending nudes to my long-distance lover,” says one Albuquerque woman who prefers to remain anonymous. “We did it before, but my skills are top-notch now. I’ve got a tripod and a selfie button. It’s art now! I have lingerie now, just so I can play and make cute videos and photos.”

People are getting even more creative.

Try sending a T-shirt you slept in or a blanket they can cuddle when they are craving physical touch. Throw in a body pillow and/or a weighted blanket, and you’re practically cuddling without another human being there.

Brandon Hunter-Haydon, who lives in Massachusetts, says the new landscape has helped him create more intention in how he connects with himself and others.

“I am creating a dedicated space— usually a bedroom—that’s free of distraction, free of stressors. I leave my phones/devices out of the room,” Hunter-Haydon says. “I enhance it with lighting, fragrances or even music, but the idea is to create another dimension where there’s no expectation, but you’re inviting a sensual experience.”

Intimacy and connection also might have nothing to do with sex. How do we connect with family and friends when we can’t see them regularly? How do you tell someone you miss them without using the exact same words you’ve used for the last 300 days? My hope is that in all of the grief, loss and loneliness of a pandemic, we can take some of what we’ve learned and carry it forward to create deeper, more attuned forms of intimacy that meet our own needs, and the needs of those with whom we’re engaging.

A

t the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I lost my job and couldn’t receive unemployment.

I was facing eviction, my bills were all past due, I was living off donations of rice and beans from friends and I started to feel like I had little choice in the matter—I jumped head-first into creating a presence on OnlyFans.com with little more than survival on my mind.

I didn’t consider how I’d go about promoting myself. I didn’t consider how much or how little I’d charge potential subscribers. I didn’t even consider how far I’d be willing to go in terms of content creation, but I jumped in nonetheless, thinking it would help keep me afloat, or that it would easy.

Like every single woman on Earth, I’d felt men cast their gaze on me in demeaning, objectifying, predatory ways. I’d been sexualized without my consent before; I’d heard testimony from drunk dudes about pleasuring themselves to that top I worked in the other night; I’ve been groped in public. I’ve had men withhold tips because I wouldn’t let them shove money in my bra. I’ve survived sexual assault. With the decision to create content, I had to revisit each of these experiences, and moments after creating my account, I was hit with near-crippling anxiety. I hated being sexualized by men and being seen as an object or property.

Did I really want to put myself out there, specifically with the intent to receive sexual attention?

The answer surprised me—I did. For once, it felt like I had the power to sexualize myself on my own terms, a new reality that felt both freeing and terri-

fying. Regardless, it has been a learning experience.

I created an Instagram account to promote my OnlyFans page, but that fell short fast. How does one promote that they’re engaging in sex work anyway?

This raised more questions: If I have no following outside of personal accounts, how do I gain traction? If I link to personal accounts and my family sees them, what will they think? If a future employer stumbles upon my content, will it cost me a job? If someone who already has an opinion about me sees my content,

will it change how they see me? Will men who know me think it’s a free pass to be lewd around me? Will women who know me form new judgements about who I am?

What I realized at the dizzying end of all of these questions was that if people change their minds about who they think I am, that doesn’t actually change who I am. If my family sees my content and confronts me, I can tell them I did what I had to do to survive and hope they understand. My boundaries are still my boundaries and will be observed respectfully—being a sex worker doesn’t mean people can sexualize you whenever they want.

Besides, it’s not all flowers and rainbows and sex toys. I have off days wherein I feel as though I’m sexualizing myself against my own will. I’ll go offline for days in a depressive state, feeling a lack of confidence or shame for forcing myself to look sexy and take photos so I can maintain subscribers and hit quotas. The assumption is far too often made that sex work is easy, when it’s anything but—this is a full-time job. Between promoting, which takes hours a day if I wish to remain relevant, creating content (promotional, subscriptional and custom) and responding to messages and comments, sex work is exactly that: work.

But people don’t often ask if it’s worth the trouble. For what it’s worth, in the seven months I’ve been creating and posting content, I’ve made roughly $1,300. This has helped pay rent, buy food, buy gas and pay bills, but I still don’t have a large enough following despite months of promotion and creation. For now, it’s not enough, but it helps me get along. Can I afford to stop doing sex work? No, I can’t.

Meanwhile, male consumers believe sex is supposed to be free. At least that’s the overwhelming response I receive when answering messages. It seems most men believe I should send them photos and videos gratis, or enter Skype sessions for free. They haggle and seemingly want me to be doing this because I love it or am eager to please them, because I exist only to show them what they want. They forget—or, more likely, willfully ignore—that I am a human being who needs money to eat and survive.

“I can get pussy, tits and ass anywhere for free, why should I pay you?” they’ve asked; or, “I already blew my load to your promo pic, why would I pay now?”

The world of sex work, at least the small pool into which I’ve dipped a very nude and lewd toe, is teeming with men who expect freebies from content creators who work too hard for too little.

And it’s terrifying. Despite the positivity and support that has sprouted up for sex work and sex workers in recent years, I’m not even writing this piece under my real name for fear of the fallout, or the fear of facing assumptions from my community.

People assume sex workers simply entered the field, when this is overwhelmingly not the case. We serve you coffee and sell you gas, we work in your office and pass you on the street every day. We save to buy homes, we’re trying to pay our bills.

Sex workers are working toward something better for ourselves. The world is a scary enough place for a woman. If you don’t think that’s valid enough, then I really don’t care.

Big Love is Bad, Actually Our cultural obsession with “big love” promotes a cycle of discontent

R

emember when denim ball caps were a thing? Remember when boy bands had frosted tips? When Kelly Clarkson was everywhere and Hollywood was putting out weird impressions of George W. Bush for some kind of safe commentary?

Welcome back to the era of 2003’s Love Actually. We’re talking Hugh Grant dancing around 10 Downing Street and not doing a proper job of being the UK’s Prime Minister; Bill Nighy’s appearance that we call a “performance” for some reason (maybe it’s brilliant, I can’t tell); Andrew Lincoln stalking Keira Knightley—and Bilbo Baggins himself, Martin Freeman, doing a softcore porno and falling in love. It’s a wonderful Christmastime in Brittania.

Love Actually’s numerous plot threads come together with a series of romantic grand gestures. Grant’s character goes

door-to-door, searching for his assistant so he can dramatically reveal his feelings. Colin Firth gets so turned on by a Portuguese housekeeper that he learns her language and leads a massive crowd to watch him pitch woo. Some impossibly cute kid violates national security by sprinting through an airport gate to profess his love while his stepdad Liam Neeson goads him on. It’s all mostly weird.

This isn’t meant to pointlessly knock the UK’s contribution to the Christmas cinematic canon. In the States, we’re cursed with never-ending Elf and Christmas Story reruns, and we’ve done this to ourselves, really, perhaps as punishment for society’s sins. Yet, there’s a broader conversation surrounding what such films teach us and a terrifyingly questionable portrayal of what it means to fall in love, to have love and to give love.

Love Actually has funny moments.

It’s even sweet now and again—as long as you’re sticking strictly to the heteronormative or can get down with the idea of a poor person being “saved” by a rich person. It’s like classic Hollywood, right? My Fair Lady, maybe? Love Actually didn’t invent the idea of the grand romantic moment, but it’s a culmination of its pathos—a not-so-subtle reminder that unless special things happen to you, you probably aren’t very special. Oh, also, the Laura Linney bits wherein she graciously visits her institutionalized brother feel weird and reductive when it comes to mental illness, but her stint on the final season of Frasier proves what I’m talking about—straight people gonna straight, and their love is creepy and boring.

And it’s all some massive and never-ending international trend that drives the bus. Bigger is better, even in love, right? It’s in ads wherein a man surprises his wife with a diamond necklace—or a Peloton—or the

return of a long-lost family member—just in time for the holidays. It’s the shock (and too-public) proposal in front of Disney World’s Cinderella Castle, on the sports jumbo-tron in front of tens of thousands of spectators or an American high school culture obsessed with grandiose promoposals. Isn’t going the extra mile proof of concept? Proof of love? The intricate, the bombastic, the airport-sprinting training we receive from big films should probably elicit the same response from everyone: Nice story, better if true.

Point is, such films have whittled away at us for years, and romance spawned by pop culture is a sport or shock-andawe campaign. Some of us tried to bring that bigness into our homes in 2020, but events outside of ourselves loomed larger.

For the sake of public safety, we have to be smaller, and we need to learn how to bring down expectations of big romance.

It’s pathetic it took me a global pandemic to realize this. When you’re a film fanatic, you delude yourself into thinking you’re watching above the fray.

“I can watch something dumb, but it’s because I’m smart,” I say to myself.

Still, somewhere deep in my subconscious, a voice was telling me to hope for the unexpected. Through movies like Love Actually, I mistook love as big bucks and big effort. Being unique or singled out for special treatment is a good feeling, and we want to feel that from the world, but the loneliness of the past year came with an obvious but invaluable lesson: We’re not big, and most of us don’t get special treatment. Last year hit hard with the idea that our suffering doesn’t have a rescue at the end. When the pandemic struck, we lost the possibility of the big romantic moment. Losing the possibility is hard.

Ironically, watching Love Actually last year was the wake-up I needed— it reminded me of everything I didn’t need. I’d been convincing myself since I needed a “movie character moment” to be valuable to the world and even to myself. I was lonely in waiting for the big romantic moment, though. I turned down professional and personal opportunities because I was sure my big moment was on the horizon. I think many others have done the same.

But someplace between screenings of rom-coms and rom-drams and even the odd horror film and documentary, the past 12 months taught me something important: Love can and sometimes must be found in silence, in survival, on the couch while furiously reloading the unemployment website over and over. Love, it turns out, actually prospers in quiet rooms.

SISEA Sux Stalled bipartisan bill paints horrific future for sex workers

I

n mid-December, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) introduced the Stop Internet Sexual Exploitation Act, or SISEA, claiming it can and will reduce sexual exploitation online. In reality, however, the bipartisan bill is poised to remove vital platforms and resources for sex workers, effectively ending consensual online sexual content and even endangering sex workers’ lives. If you’re thinking such steps won’t affect on your own life, consider that if you consume online adult content—any adult content—Merkley and Sasse’s bill impacts you directly.

For starters, SISEA would criminalize downloading adult content, create legal loopholes for underage sexual content, place impractical demands on adult content platforms and dictate platforms which carry adult content must operate “a 24-hour telephone hotline that an individual or an authorized representative of an individual, or a law enforcement officer, can contact to request removal of a pornographic image from the platform if the individual appears in the pornographic image and has not consented to the pornographic image being uploaded to the platform.” At first blush, that mouthful sounds reasonable, perhaps even preventative of revenge porn scenarios. But such far-reaching potential damages mask dense legal language cloaked in flowery as-

sertions that the bill would prevent and fight online sexual harm while it’s actually discouraging platforms from hosting adult content creators in the first place.

Broadly, SISEA sets high goals that are outright disconnected from the reality of how the internet functions. One provision, for example, would establish a requirement for the verification of identity and age before uploading adult content, but also applies retroactively. This means your adult content site of choice that struggles to comply might be wiped of decades’ worth of content.

SISEA would also require a two-hour deadline response for the removal of reported content, a step that would require more manpower than many platforms have on hand. The bill is further unclear about the verification process for those reporting content, which could lead to online attacks or trolling via mass reporting. This also means that if a platform finds that adult content warrants too much manpower as a result of SISEA, they may ban it outright rather than risking noncompliance. Anyone recall the great Tumblr adult content purge of 2018? Picture it on an internet-wide scale; thousands upon thousands of adult content creator accounts could potentially disappear overnight, massive archives disappearing alongside time.

Adult content is the most obviously impacted form of sex work today, but online advertisements encompass an even more vulnerable group—full-service sex workers, who provide direct sexual service. In the time of COVID-19, such workers are already more vulnerable than ever.

Perhaps most frustrating is that we’ve already experienced similar harmful government oversight before. When Congress passed the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (FOSTA/SESTA) in 2018, unintended consequences included sex workers losing contact with their customer base, as well

as the ability to screen clients safely and discreetly from home. This vetting inclued anything from proof of sexual health screenings to background checks for violent crimes.

When those resources were lost, some consensual sex workers were forced to move to street-based advertisement, leading to prostitution charges, violence, more sex trafficking and even death. The advertising vacuum also led to male managers and promoters, essentially pimps, swooping in on vulnerable sex workers and taking a cut of the profits for dubious protection services while exposing sex workers to dangerous situations up to and including direct participation in sex trafficking. San Francisco, for example, saw sex trafficking triple within a year of FOSTA/SESTA passing, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, and the dual bills created such unfathomable liability for some businesses that they removed all mention of the subject itself, and with it, any platform for victims to reach out for help. Cyber-trails of proof to convict traffickers, for example, disappeared.

SISEA also impacts those uninvolved with sex work—even teenagers. The bill’s language stipulates users must “verify their age is not less than the minimum age required to consent to sexual acts under the law of the State in which the user resides.” In 40 states, the age of consent is under 18. Should SISEA pass, it would

create confusion about whether such vaguely written laws would legalize pornographic content featuring unun derage teenagers under the guise of “stopping exploitation.” It also states directly that “a covered platform may retriev not permit the download to a retrievim able data file of any pornographic image from the platform.” This means that even a consensual sex worker on OnlyFans will no longer be able to download conduct business, since downloading their content would essentially constitute a federal crime. Adult content as we know it would cease to exist online, with legally obtained sexual material created by consensual crim sex workers evaporating due to the criminalization of downloads.

This may not be that concerning for those who have moral or ethical objections to sexual media or sex work, but this doesn’t mean sexual materials will simply vanish.

Instead, consumers and sex workers will be forced to the dark web, that unregulated sub-internet infamous for horrifying content such as videos and images of abused or sexually enslaved women, child porn and sex trafficking. The more consenting adult content creators are cornered, the more immediately dangerous the industry becomes—and the more the dark web market of abuse and exploitation grows.

The fault lies with lawmakers ignorant to how sex work and the internet function practically, as well as evangelical anti-pornography groups which oppose sex trafficking rescue efforts and sex work activists. As the new Congress has been sworn in, the bill appears to be stalled for now, but you can count on it being reintroduced, possibly under a new name. More attacks are launched on adult content on the internet all the time—the question remains what we’re going to do about it.

The Good, the Bad and the Only OK Dating is horrible in the best of times—in the midst of a pandemic, it can be hell

ccording to a new study from the website WalletHub.com, New Mexico is the number-one worst state in the country for singles. This probably doesn’t surprise anyone who lives here, but by taking elements such as dating costs and the populace into account, WalletHub was able to scientifically determine that it’s rough out there. Throw something nutty like an international pandemic into the mix, and the whole rigamarole becomes a whole lot worse. Questions loom: Have you already met that special someone? Should you lower your standards? Is running back to an ex because we might all die basically the last respite of the damned? All of that is real. Too real.

So, I reached out to some folks in Santa Fe and Albuquerque to see how things have been going in the love department over the last year. Are the stories kind of funny and sad? Yes! Are they maybe a little hopeful?

Also yes. Names have been redacted to protect the innocent (read: those hoping to have sex again at some point).

“I went out the weekend before lockdown with the mission of having in-casethis-is-the-end-of-the-world sex,” says one Santa Fe massage therapist. “I was feeling like it really could be my last shot at having some for a long time.…I found it, but it was not good, not fun and I would have been fine if the world ended without having that.”

Turns out our anonymous sex-seeker discovered through social media that her last bang, so to speak, was a rabid anti-masker, anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist. But wait—there’s more. Later that spring, she matched on Tinder with an out-of-state film worker who’d come to New Mexico for work. Before they had a chance to meet, however, someone on his crew tested positive for COVID-19, sending

him back east. Still, she says, they stayed in touch and planned to meet if and when he returned. That did end up happening, but, she says, “I legit couldn’t think of what to do.”

Not comfortable hitting a restaurant or bar, or even having someone from whoknows-where in her home or car, the anonymous dater finally settled on a walk, only to learn her out-of-stater’s boss wasn’t allowing crew out of their hotel except for work, which, she says, “I understand, but needless to say, we never met.”

Even worse, old flames and ancient Tinder matches started coming out of the woodwork with vaguely honeyed words for our mystery massage therapist. Whether this was about mortality concerns or that good old-fashioned assumption that we could probably bone our exes with minimal effort, especially when the world’s crumbling, none can say.

“My girlfriends and I started calling it ‘Look What the Quarantine Dragged In,” she tells SFR. “I remember one Tinder match was in Texas, and I asked if they were still on lockdown. He said, ‘Yeah, but they said it’s okay for you to come here.’ I think lockdown to a lot of them was just an opportunity to hook up. I’ve had married exes reach out, men who have blocked me reach out.…I’ve had a lot of men talking to themselves in my DMs and getting very ag-

gressive because I don’t respond.”

For one Albuquerque 30-something, however, the DMs have actually worked out OK. “Obviously respect people’s space,” he says, “but if you’re able to start up a convo, there’s a chance something more isn’t too far behind.”

A musician and social media expert by trade, our ABQ mystery guy has been dating during the pandemic, but just one person.

“I tried dating apps with no luck, but I’ve actually had a lot of luck with just talking to people I already knew over social media,” he says, also pointing out how dating someone he already knows was an easier situation to trust. “I’ve met up with two different people, but am seeing one of them exclusively now—both had to be tested regularly for work, so there were no worries since I feel like having known them a bit before helped minimize that possibility.”

That social media plan seems to work alright for some, as does the Facebook Dating component (who knew FB has a dating component?). One anonymous Santa Fe 40-something tells SFR she’s been using it for about a year, and that after viewing hundreds of profiles and only meeting up with a couple dudes who didn’t prove to be good matches, she found a suitor in Denver with whom she connected immediately.

“I usually find someone I may be interested in, chat for a bit on Facebook Dating, then take it to Facebook Messenger for the ease and options on the app. If they are worthy, I might add them limited as friends then, after a time, phone number, Skype, eventually meet in person, etc.,” she explains. “I am very picky. I am 44, divorced 16 years with 2 older teenagers, so I try to be cautious, but open-minded—I have high standards because I bring a lot to the table. I have done the hard work and have reached a certain level, and I am looking for the same.”

This one’s a COVID case investigator and contact tracer for the state’s Department of Health, so you know she’s taking it extra seriously.

“I know and teach COVID protocol all day long,” she says. “[There are] basic public health guidelines that have been around for decades.”

So what about that guy in Denver? After connecting via Facebook Dating, they took the romance to Skype, where they could lay eyes on one another.

“In the first three days we were both feeling what I would consider love at first sight,” she tells SFR. “Due to certain circumstances and scheduling, we agreed that I would drive up to Denver the second week of January to stay with him; we…got a private cabin, went exploring out in the wilderness….It was incredible! Due to the pandemic, distance and a few other things, we are currently on hold for now, but I am leaving everything open to whatever.”

Open to whatever indeed. Who can say whether or not we’ll ever trust strangers again, especially when it comes to putting our mouths on their mouths and interlocking our parts with theirs? Still, the lessons are clear: Be open, be cool, don’t creep on people with whom you blew it in the past if you can help it. Oh, and mask up, assholes.

He’s been making a name for himself since his teens with an earnest blend of fingerpicking, sugary-sweet vocals and subtle nods to the blues of yesteryear. For his upcoming Love Songs livestream, however, Gomez culls a romantic set from his own catalogue and love songs through the ages. Feedlots Food for Love virtual fest to benefit hungry New Mexicans statewide By now, none of us are strangers to the online virtual benefit concert. In Santa Fe alone, we’ve already experienced Tonic for the Times and Virtual LemonAid, both of which raised money to help New Mexicans with food, rent assistance and whatever else was pressing.

The biggest, however, has yet to come, and with the upcoming Food for Love event running over the Valentine’s Day weekend, scads of the country’s most esteemed artists come together to raise the big bucks for the New Mexico Association of Food Banks, a new consortium encompassing the five major food banks across the state, including the Food Depot in Santa Fe and Albuquerque’s Roadrunner Food Bank.

“These five food banks cover every one of the 33 counties in New Mexico, and they’ve formed an association so every place in the state is served,” organizer Bill Banowsky, also owner of Violet Crown Cinema, tells SFR. “It was a natural group for us to work with, and all of the money raised goes right to them— we don’t touch the money—and they tell us $1 can feed up to four people.”

On the bill, you’ll find folks like David Byrne (who has already played a couple other shows for New Mexico causes), Ben Dickey, Charlie Sexton, Sue Foley, Shawn Colvin, Marcia Ball, Lyle Lovett, Nathaniel Rateliff, Eliza Gilkyson and many more than we could possibly

print here. Each pre-recorded a performance, and local promotions outfit AMP Concerts edited the five-hour package together.

Banowsky says the show’s been in the works since last summer following musician Terry Allen’s A Night in Austin show, a similar benefit that raised over half a million bucks for out-of-work Texas musicians. Back home in New Mexico, Allen’s organizing alongside Banowsky and others, and the song remains the same, though funds will go directly to feeding anyone needy. So what is it about New Mexico that would make all these artists band together to help us?

“A combination of Terry making the ask, and it being a worthy cause,” Banowsky explains. “Many of these artists have played here a lot, and there’s an affinity for our state and our people. New Mexico is a beloved place. We’ve put a light on that, and the response has been great from the artists.”

Food for Love runs for 48 hours, but will also live on in website form, should folks wish to donate later down the line.

It’s funny to use qualifiers like “freshness” and “urgency” when describing a throwbacky album, but with Schreitz tapping Theo Krantz (head of local label Cry Like Donna and a studied musician in his own right) for production work, the songs feel every bit as new as they do familiar.

“I guess I would say they’re kind of abstractions of love songs,” Schreitz tells SFR. “They deal with desire and excitement, which I feel are abstractions of pop music in general—they sort of point to a particular meaning, but I’m not trying to convince you one way or another.”

Still, love and desire aside, Schreitz has gone darker than ever.

• After however-long without access to state-subsidized arts and history institutions, places like the Museum of International Folk Art and the New Mexico History Museum are opening up once more—albeit with smaller numbers allowed inside, as long as they’re masked. • The Keep Santa Fe Multicultural group (keepsantafemulticultural.org), which has vehemently opposed the state’s Department of Cultural Affairs tearing down the Gilberto Guzman mural “Multi-Cultural” to make way for its Vladem Contemporary satellite wing of the New Mexico Museum of Art, was out there on Guadalupe Street protesting over the weekend following the announcement that construction on the new space was beginning last week.

In a press release from the DCA, SFR learned that the mural would indeed be retired, though Keep Santa Fe Multicultural organizers have repeatedly said museum and state officials had promised to keep them abreast of construction developments—which never happened.

• Venerable Canyon Road gallery Turner Carroll (turnercarrollgallery.com) hits the big three-oh this year, which is pretty huge. Tonya Turner Carroll and Michael Carroll founded the space in 1991, and have since shown some of our all-time faves, specifically Nina Tichava, whose mixed-media paintings are soooo good for staring.

When we at SFR heard Blue Corn Brewery was retiring its longstanding name and rebranding to Hidden Mountain Brewing Co., we all laughed and made ranch dressing jokes. But after sampling some takeout the other night, I’m glad to report that the Southside eatery and brewery appears to be on the right track.

First, the bad news: The onetime Blue Corn Brewery location off the Plaza has closed for good, so anyone who lived closer to that one/loved that place is out of luck now. If it helps, however, the rebrand puts the restaurant in a better position to serve locals, according to Head Brewer Paul Mallory.

Mallory tells SFR the name change has been in play for a few years, and that the COVID-19 pandemic seems a good time to try something new. With the downtown location closed—and with it, Mallory says, the strange balancing act of trying to appeal to both locals and tourists alike— the flagship Hidden Mountain Brewing

Foodwise, my companion and I (both pescatarians) sampled the fish and chips ($16) and the grilled salmon ($20). Made with cod, the fish and chips came as three satisfyingly breaded and crispy portions of the white fish. Like pizza, even the notgreat fish and chips of the world are pretty OK, but Hidden Mountain nailed it on both the flavor and presentation fronts. The fish was firm and flavorful and the included tartar sauce and coleslaw accentuated the taste with a slightly sweet and aromatic counterpoint. The chips were perhaps a tad wilted, though that was probably more to do with the drive home—and anyway, they were obviously hand-cut and flavorful nonetheless.

The grilled 6-oz. salmon elicited a sincere “Ohmygod!” from my dining partner, particularly for its cherry chipotle barbecue sauce.

On the side, rich

mashed potatoes and green beans not only expanded the overall dish’s texture game, but tasted “better and different than most mashed potatoes I’ve had.” We think it’s about the amount of butter used—we appreciate the amount of butter used.

Further, Mallory explains, the company’s beer game is a-changing, both in his decision to retire a number of brews (say goodbye to the brown ale and the honey wheat) to make room for more exciting experiments.

“I’ve always had a lot of creative freedom, but now I think I have even more,” Mallory says with a laugh. “I thought [the pandemic] would be a nice opportunity to try out a few of the things I’ve wanted to try.”

Straight away, this means you’ll find a rotating cast of hazy (that’s an unfiltered and slightly juicier beer, for the uninitiated) and West Coast IPA selections. The new jewel in Mallory’s crown, however, might be the debut of his Berliner Weisse brew. German in origin, the sour beer is generally made with a singular fruit during the fermenting process. Mallory says his is more like a base, and that he’s developed a number of fruit purees to sweeten the pot.

“We literally squirt a little into the glass when we pour, which means we can do more flavors, like blood orange or lime.

And we’ve even made a woodruff syrup from an herb, and [that last one] is more the way they do it in Germany. Because we’re only doing patio service right now, people can’t watch us pour and serve it, but I’m sure people will be drinking in bars soon enough.”

Should you wish to sample the beers yourself, Hidden Mountain car carries on the Blue Corn tra tradition of to-go growlers.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, baker Marti Mills is upping her cookie game like woah with her home-based business, XOnuevo (xonuevo.com). Mills pours her love for her home state of New Mexico into a wide array of baked treats made with ingredients like red chile, bergamot, cardamom, lavender and, of course, standbys like almond, chocolate, vanilla, etc. Did we mention you can get them in a number of different shapes—like freaking teddy bears?

“I wanted to find a way to share this love with my community during the isolation we’ve all be experiencing,” Mills says.

“When I was 5 years old, my grandmother taught me this recipe, and I became obsessed with baking as a result.”

Mills would go on to complete culinary training at the Santa Fe Community College at the age of 13—something that required special permission from the school’s dean. Additionally, she says, she’s committed to sourcing ingredients locally.

“My absolute favorite at the moment is the lavender shortbread,” she says.

“The lavender is grown organically by my friend in Santa Fe.” At $15 for a baker’s dozen (with the 13th cookie a mystery surprise), XOnuevo is perhaps a little pricier than a sleeve or two of Oreos, but we’re talking quality here, buds. Plus, as cheesy as it sounds, Mills bakes with love, both for the food and for the city/state. Ask anyone in the know and they’ll tell you love as ingredient is a very real thing. In your face, emotionless, mass-produced cookies!

If you’ve ever feared a Reddit post coming to life and whispering its no-doubt super-edgy edgelord nonsense in your ear, those nightmares have now come true with the new “documentary,” A Glitch in the Matrix.

One of the more questionable entries at this year’s Sundance film fest, The Nightmare director Rodney Ascher’s newest lingers in a gray zone between comedy and true crime. It would almost be impressively self-assured in its boldness but, in actuality, it’s the film equivalent of the dude who crowds you at a bar to rant incessantly about his internet search history, or your stoner buddy asking you if you’ve ever contemplated the cosmos, man?!

+ SKILLFUL, SMART, AND TIGHT - WOULDN’T HURT TO GIVE ANOTHER FEW SCENES TO THE SUBPLOTS

Two of Us is a surface-level romance, although its true nature is, oddly, horror. It isn’t the film’s imagery or plot that make it so, but a deeper and harsher reality that’s almost hard to fathom: Homophobia is alive and well.

Nina (Barbara Sukowa) lives across the hall from Madeline (Martine Chevallier). To everyone in their lives, the women appear to be casual friends, but in secret they’re longtime lovers. Even as society errs more toward approving of their relationship over time, the pair’s hush-hush goings-on remain a secret until Madeline has a stroke, putting Nina in the heart-wrenching position of battling her partner’s nurse and family, all of whom see the once-friendly neighbor as increasingly strange and dominant. Those familiar with the canon of queer film might expect such a story to zero in on the injustices, and while it was probably tempting to go that route, director Filippo Meneghetti’s first feature makes internalized homophobia a very real antagonist. Two millennia of oppression makes all kinds of love risky in the mind, even when the world ostensibly shouts its support; Meneghetti’s minimalist take keeps us behind the walls of the women’s apartments, making any exodus feel more akin to agoraphobia. He tells the tale economically, with no minute or scene dedicated to pointless fluff, which makes for a brisk run time. Two of Us becomes a wonderfully quick and cohesive introduction to queer cinema from a filmmaking newcomer.

Sukowa channels Nina’s rageful woman and transforms her anger over familial fear and the world itself into a sort fierce bit of protection. Chevallier, meanwhile, has the monumental task of communicating without words and physicality. Denied easy communication, she gives every post-stroke scene a layer of tension atop Nina’s own turmoil. IS INHERENTLY INTERESTING, AT LEAST? - EVERYTHING ELSE; ANIMATIONS ARE THE STUFF OF NIGHT TERRORS

Glitch asks the existential question of our reality: Are we living in a simulation, a la The Matrix? Setting aside how absurd it is to base a so-called documentary on a film that we now know is about coming to grips with being trans, the people interviewed in the film say their anecdotal experiences are proof computer algorithms set our day-to-day lives. Ascher doesn’t clarify who these subjects are or why we should take them seriously—we don’t even get names; the good news is that we already don’t take them seriously.

The Matrix, you see, is a work of fiction. So are Phillip K. Dick’s works. Ditto the YouTube video essays from the depths of the internet where only the bearded truck ranters dare to tread. To these nefarious subjects, though, their “facts” are indeed facts—and grave warnings.

Us, then, is properly intimate—a work that knows its boundaries and thrives in the ultimate simplicity of a story told well. The burn is slow, but the merging of confident filmmaking and a familiar but looming terror asks us to hold out a little longer as each scene ticks on toward resolution. + HATHAWAY SELLS IT ONCE OR TWICE; HEDGEHOG

- LONG AND CONVOLUTED

You’re going to start seeing movies and television that were “bravely” filmed during the swirling, imposing pandemic. The kind that make the virus part of the plot. But as the onslaught of oh-so-topical projects starts to hit our screens, one question will remain for the those in search of quality entertainment: Why, when the excellent Michael Sheen/ David Tennant production Staged exists on Hulu, would we ever put ourselves through the tired and unremarkable Locked Down with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, now streaming on HBO Max? The short answer is that we shouldn’t.

The longer answer has something to do with Hathaway’s Linda and Ejiofor’s Paxton, a well-to-do American/English couple living in London who split up just as the UK COVID-19 lockdowns come into effect. We observe the aftermath. The well-to-do bit has everything to do with Linda’s CEO position with some international company called Miracore.

She’s wracked with doubt. Paxton, meanwhile, once went to prison, loves his motorcycle so damn much and apparently has toned down his former wild ‘n’ crazy ways to live in a posh multi-story house with a friendly hedgehog out back. Linda resents him for giving up his attitude even if he did it for her; Paxton likes poetry and reads it aloud in the streets to his neighbors. Gross.

Ascher deserves some credit for not shying away from the darker sides of conspiracy beliefs, but Glitch runs away with its own rambling. Movie clips and frightening amateur animation do even less for credibility, and Ascher’s confidence feels more like a mask for a hollow and exploitative nonstarter topic.

Ascher doesn’t know what he’s going for. His film is somehow comedic, dark and dull all at once, and he seemingly decides skimming the surface will do. Glitch is a 108-minute equivalent of a shrug. The automated voice that reads Wikipedia articles out loud would leave you with more.

though particularly smoldering during arguments.

We understand things were said that cannot be unsaid, but somehow we got lost when, in the third act of the film, Linda and Paxton decide they’re maybe going to pull off a heist. See, Paxton’s courier service boss (Ben Kingsley) sends him to illegally transport a diamond from Harrod’s department store—the very diamond Linda’s company has… something to do with…somehow. Unclear. But they might steal it, and then it’s splitsville, baby. No looking back. Right?

Hathaway and Ejiofor do their best, with Hathaway in particular doling out a decent monologue or two. Ejiofor’s effortless charm always works. Still, as rom-coms go, it’s not that funny or romantic. As heist flicks go, it’s kind of too little, too late. It’s also hard to reconcile blink-and-miss-it performances from Kingsley, Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling and Ben Stiller as anything other than a list of actors who said “Sure, I’ve got 10 minutes to Zoom in a performance” to director Doug Liman (he did Swingers, you know).

So, yeah, maybe just watch Staged? Or at least wait for something that isn’t quite so drawn-out and mostly boring with so little payoff. (Alex De Vore) HBO Max, R, 118 min.

You remember David Arquette, right? The actor from the Hollywood family that also boasts Rosanna, Patricia and Alexis Arquette? He was in Scream? Eight Legged Freaks? He married Courteney Cox? Yeah—that guy.

movie Ready to Rumble (also with Scott Caan... ugh) and became its Heavyweight Champion of the World. This set off a firestorm of hate among the wrestling faithful, who’ve spent the last 20 years hating Arquette’s guts—and it almost certainly derailed his acting.

What’s a guy to do? Well, according to the documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette, the answer is to start wrestling for real, start training in earnest, hopefully to win the respect of…whoever…while simultaneously clearing out the cobwebs of mental illness and undoing two decades’ worth of ire from the wrestling community. And it’s a trip.

You Cannot Kill David Arquette didn’t feel like it was worth the $19.99 rental on Amazon when it dropped a few months back, but now that it’s found a home at Hulu, it’s endlessly watchable in a trainwreck kind of way. Arquette produces his own redemption story, one in which he gets fit, travels to Mexico to train with luchadores, enrolls in a real-life wrestling school and ultimately finds himself while being accepted within the wrestling world. It honestly feels like a long con bit at first, but as scenes wherein backyard wrestlers seriously mess him up or even an ER visit that comes after a bout results in a nicked throat artery show, there’s something to learn from the star of See Spot Run—homeboy is dedicated and, as the people who sincerely love wrestling are quick to remind you, even if it’s akin to a play, it’s still a sport (Arquette’s athletics prove that, too).

We also get interviews with living Arquette siblings (RIP Alexis), Cox herself and Arquette’s present-day wife, the journalist Christina McLarty. McLarty’s insistence that hubs is for real lends credence to the journey, and it’s heartwarming to see her support in action. Both give the audience even more of a reason to root for the guy. You’ll almost surely come to respect Arquette by the end, and you’ll appreciate how much he really, truly means it. (ADV) Hulu, R, 91 min.

OBITUARIES Diane Perkins, 73 of Santa Fe, NM passed on Nov. 5, 2020 at home. She was born 1947 in Philadelphia, PA daughter of George and Doris Christensen.

She is survived by sister, Sandra Christensen, of Beaver Dam, WI. She had many different jobs in her life; the last of which included the reinsurance business, Cordon Bleu trained chef, and private health care worker. She also volunteered as a museum docent in Santa Fe. She had a sparkling personality and friends called her "Chef Perky" She gifted them with wonderful desserts while lecturing on history and origins of the recipes.

She was inurned at Rivera's Family Funeral Home in Santa Fe.
