HISTORY TOO In addition to his “legacy of hard-hitting investigative journalism,” Richard McCord was a champion of historic preservation in his adopted hometown.

Richard served on the board of the Old Santa Fe Association (OSFA) some 15 years—four of those as treasurer of the 94-year-old nonprofit dedicated to preserving the best of Old Santa Fe. In addition to recruiting new members to the organization and cause he took to heart, Richard also contributed valuable essays to OSFA publi-

cations. He reported on the history—one of his passions—of historic preservation movements and statutes around the country, and, notably, he wrote about what Santa Fe would look like today if not for OSFA and the preservation battles it won, starting with 1926, with its founding.

Beyond all that, Richard was good company, with a wicked sense of humor, and bonhomie towards all. We are so grateful to have known you, Richard, and thankful for all you did to ensure that the Santa Fe you loved will retain its “unique charm and distinction…born of age, tradition and environment, which are Santa Fe’s most priceless assets.”

Dick and Laurie bought The Santa Fe News from Rudy Rodriguez in1974. They renamed it the Santa Fe Reporter and then updated the format.

I know this story quite directly. I was editor of The Santa Fe News prior to its purchase. My “Santa Fe Flavors” community column appeared in the Reporter’s early days. (Those “flavors” were the lives and livelihoods of a number of City Different people.) Rudy remains active in our business community.

I’ve had a lot of conversations in the last few weeks with friends and co-workers about how they felt the day after he got elected and, almost universally, the way they describe it is they were shell shocked, which I think is a common anecdote among people who don’t support [Trump]. But over the four years, that feeling never really faded; it’s always been sitting in the back of my head. And he has done horrendous and callous things almost daily over the last four years, and each of them is another hammer strike against the nail into this thing I already knew: …the man doesn’t care about anyone except himself and it just happens to benefit him greatly to not care about people of color, immigrants, women— it’s an overwhelming disregard for humanity. I certainly hope Biden wins, which is not something I thought I would ever say, but it is where we’re at…I would like the next four years and hopefully longer than that to be hopefully something a little more kind and compassionate.

Santa Feans reflect on four years of the Trump presidency and their hopes for the future

T

his story’s methodology was simple. SFR asked people in the Santa Fe community the following two-part question: “What event or issue stands out to you the most from the last four years of the Trump presidency, and what is your strongest hope for the coming four years?”

For the first part of the question, racial justice, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic emerged as some of the most pressing issues.

But beyond specific issues, people also expressed concerns, remorse and, in many cases, outrage and frustration at the general loss of civil discourse and respect for this country’s democratic institutions.

As for their hopes as voters head to the polls Nov. 3: restoring all that’s been lost, in a nutshell.

Our respondents—students, artists, politicians, social activists—had plenty to say. On the front end, we asked folks to keep it short. As the weeks went on, we let people say their piece.

Nonetheless, some of the answers have been edited for concision and space.

I think the issues that really stick out for me—and it’s because my work and my career is oriented around these two particular issues—are climate justice and Indigenous sovereignty issues, both of which have been extremely harmed and had gross setbacks…with the Trump administration. I spent six months of my life back in 2016 working on the Standing Rock issue and I was working on the ground as a communications and digital strategist for that movement and it took quite some time [to achieve] what we wanted but, eventually with the Obama administration, we met a goal and the pipeline was stopped. One of Trump’s first actions in the White House was writing an executive order to push that pipeline through. I was on the ground in February when that took place and it really set forth…an entire raid of the camp and kind of quite literally set that entire movement up in flames…it was a huge stab to our morale and to our work. That movement was so powerful to tribes across the world, across the continent, and to have

years of the Trump presidency, and what is your strongest hope for the coming four years? that be one of his first actions—it set the tone for what was coming. Since then we saw the rescinding of [The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah], which to me was a shock of presidential action, him basically violating the Antiquities Act. It wasn’t surprising that it happened, but it was also again shocking to have those things happen one after the other; [it] just set the tone for the kinds of attacks that we were to see and feel over the course of his term, from pulling out from the Paris agreement to now, with creating plans to open up the Arctic Refuge for oil and drilling.

When it comes to the climate, the communities that are going to be the first and worst impacted are Indigenous communities. In Alaska, there are communities that have already been relocated, their entire lifeways have changed because they can’t live where they have been for time immemorial. It’s a miner’s canary type of situation, where this is going to happen, not just in the north, but we’re seeing it happen in places like Louisiana, where some of the tribes have been the first to receive climate relocation funding. In the next four years—it’s obvious where my loyalties stand and where my vote will go—but I can only hope if we are able to remove Trump from office, then a new administration will be able to get back into the Paris agreement, we’ll be able to move forward with

I don’t think there’s a single event or issue. Honestly, it’s the new precedents the Trump administration has set on so many different issues that I’ve found so disturbing. There’s no rock bottom on any given issue, from separating children from their parents at the border to reducing the ability of workers to access their rights. My strongest hope is that we won’t have four more years of Trump but, beyond that, that we’re able to unify ourselves around a vision for the future that looks like a slide toward justice instead of a descent into worsening injustices and inequality.

One of the things that’s really troubled me about the last four years has been the outright attempt by the Trump administration to marginalize immigrants and people of color and those of lower economic backgrounds And I feel like in Santa Fe, we like to think we’re immune from a lot of that stuff—that we’re in this nice liberal bubble or whatever—but if the last four years and COVID have taught us anything, it’s that Santa Fe very much has to confront many of the same issues that are facing the nation right now. I think the thing that stands out for me from the Trump presidency is the fragility of our institutions.

I didn’t think so much could be undermined so easily. The biggest issue is how much depends on the norms of decency and cooperation and collaboration.

I am struck by how much the Trump administration has undermined—and how quickly—by being willing to throw out all the values that we’ve held dear as a nation. I think my biggest issue with him is his lack of selfcontrol and his ability to follow through with a lot of the things he’s saying…and his blatant disrespect for individuals. His forceful push created this chaos or this inability to be one again.

That’s why the people voted for him in the first place, they thought, ‘hey he’s not a politician.’ My hopes are we get a candidate that’s willing to push our people together and create community.

What stands out to me is the complete disregard for science and public health: putting politics over science, compassion and human rights. Above all, I’m hoping for a level of humanity at a presidential level and I think, based on my previous answer, that we will go back to embracing science. In regard to specific issues and topics, I think climate is our biggest threat and addressing the egregious rollbacks to specific regulations under the Trump administration. I hope to see real criminal justice reform that’s centered in equity and racial justice. We need to reimagine and reinvest in what public safety looks like, so I hope that will be part of the conversation and I hope to see a solid plan on how to truly and quickly respond to the next pandemic.

It’s impossible to pinpoint any one thing because there’s so many terrible egregious things. Really what I find most disturbing and surprising is that I did not realize how brittle our democracy was in the US and how quickly things could erode, how much could change how quickly and how much actually the executive branch does have control over. I feel incredibly naïve that we’ve been able to depend on some goodness of character in most of our presidents— at least they respect we are a democracy. Even Andrew Jackson, who was a terrible human being, actually for the most part respected [the presidency] as one branch of government. It’s shocking to me how quickly this sense that we have a robust democracy has completely eroded and how fearful we are about having a fair election and how none of us really are certain the White Supremacist in Chief will not give the green light for people to start attacking one another on Election Day if he doesn’t like the results.

I am hoping obviously for Biden to win and a peaceful transfer of power and we all come back to what our democracy means and we can all have some sense that our leadership cares about all of us, not just the people that are ‘his base,’ and we can all come together under a democracy as citizens to really tackle the large crises, like the pandemic and the divisiveness and treating people with dignity and respect so we can provide the services people need to survive and thrive.

What event or issue stands out to you the most from the last four years of the Trump presidency, and what is your strongest hope for the coming four years?

Really, I do think that as not inspiring as Biden is to some people, I’m actually hugely relieved he’s not a very polarizing force right now because I don’t think I could take another four years of something other than calm and respect and dignity in the office. I think all of us on the far left need to push him and make sure all of this stuff, like police reform is on the table, but just having a sense there’s an and adult in charge would be wonderful again.

I’m hoping to get back to somebody who recognizes that climate change is the most serious thing we have long-term and short-term besides COVID as a threat, and to start taking care of those things. Fossil fuels had an expiration date; we’re heading that way both from a market standpoint and environmental standpoint. At the worst-case scenario, we don’t have unlimited fossil fuel, despite all of the dirtiness that they dropped into our world.

I guess what has been most sort of striking to me is the way that special interests—namely the Trump campaign—have been able to capitalize on our lack of media literacy and basic civics to foment uncertainty about what is reliable information, and the general disregard for government institutions. And my hope also would be the progressive left finds the space to go to work on things that are important, like creating actual viable paths for third-party candidates, like instant run off and approval voting and working on state and local levels, as opposed to coming out of the woodwork every four years to sabotage the presidential election.

There are so many things that it’s hard to isolate. I think we’re all tired, overstimulated, numb and I would have to say some broad things, like his lack of empathy for people who are not like him, his inability to stand up for our values: things like respecting each other, having tolerance for each other, setting an example as the elder of the country. I think about broad things, disrespect for our democratic norms.

There is so much to do because there’s so much that’s been damaged and it’s been a hard year for New Mexicans, but I have high hopes for the future—I think we have to. I’m hopeful that with competent democratic leadership at the national level, we can get this virus under control and have practices that are informed by science and medical professionals.

I guess the bigger picture of it all comes down to human dignity…and that plays out in all the ways, from defunding police to what’s happening at our borders to detention centers, abolition of prisons and, deeply for me, climate justice as all one giant umbrella. I think during the last four years: just seeing atrocities on all fronts, attacking the human dignity to live. One thing that really struck me in a conversation I had with someone right around the time all the climate justice actions were happening in the Fall, [when] we were working with YUCCA [Youth United for Climate Crisis Action] and this one person said to me, ‘I really believe it’s too late for us to stop what’s happening in terms of the climate; I just want humans to go out with the most dignity possible.’ I just want to bring that level of grace with everything we’re doing. My hope for the coming four years…I hope that we can get Trump to relinquish power. I’m not so sure that no matter what happens in the election that we aren’t going to end up having to fight for any form of democracy going forward. I think my hope is to move the conversation, to move where the center is.

This presidency has just been an assault on most parts of our identity. On the personal front…the Muslim ban had a real effect on my family and community in terms of access, getting stuck places, not being able to attend funerals of loved ones and overall fear and mental health crises because of that.

From a perspective as newmexicowomen.org, there are just so many ways in which the last four years and this presidency has impacted self-identifying women and girls nationally and that ranges from Brett Kavanaugh and those hearings…and the hearings we’re listening to this week [for Amy Coney Barrett] and just knowing the implications for generations to come…We are firmly rooted in an intersectionality approach, which recognizes our race and our immigration status, our linguistic ability, all of those things impact our gendered experience.

What event or issue stands out to you the most from the last four years of the What we’ve seen in terms of this administration is an actual advocating of violence towards communities of color and it has such an impact on our lives and the lives of women of color. And what we’ve seen in terms of disrespect toward the transgendered community—it’s just across the board.

We know there are existing inequalities that predate the Trump administration…but we know this administration has reinforced and emboldened those who perpetuate [them]. Our framework is gender justice and healing and what we’ve heard from our community partners across the state is we have gender wounds and racial wounds and colonial wounds and that to really heal those wounds requires justice and you can’t have justice without healing. We obviously don’t have a context in which that’s ever been the case, so we’re trying to build something we’ve never lived. So our hope for the coming four years is rooted in the things we’ve heard from our community partners, which involves investing in the leadership of women and girls, particularly women and girls of color, particularly women of color, investing in women-owned businesses, creating legislation that actually serves our community.

The biggest thing I hold space for is we can talk more of the human approach. Racism is a social construct and it’s based on us being divided. If there’s a way, [my hope is] for us to come together on a humanist level and have a president that rallies around all of us.

Well, there’s lots of events and issues, but…quickly off the top of my head: the rise in hate crimes, his justifications of even the most extreme forms of racist violence, the Proud Boys, neo-Nazis, all these Klan related groups, while at the same time he hides behind trying to delegitimize legitimate protest movements like Black Lives Matter. Just the rise and level of hate. People laugh when they call him the first racist president, which he obviously is not, but other than southern demagogues in the late 20th century, he’s one of the most blatantly racist presidents that we’ve ever had. He doesn’t use coded language, like Reagan and Bush did. You could make a case that’s just as bad, but I am saying he’s the most blatant about his bigotry. What he really shows is, this is the 21st century form of racism, which isn’t subtler, it’s more aggressive, more in your face…[My hopes]: That’s a hard one, when you’re at rock bottom…that somehow, with our political system, the will of mass numbers of people, working cooperatively for progressive causes, can have more influence. The two issues I’m going to focus on are climate and conservation and our democracy. For the past four years, this administration has done untold damage to our nation; it’s time to turn the page: Donald Trump and his administration have wreaked havoc on our environment and on our democracy and they have targeted communities in New Mexico with their border wall, with their attacks on immigrants, with their trampling on Native American rights and with their refusal to act on climate change, which threatens New Mexico’s future.

On the climate and conservation front, the destruction of nature is happening at a devastating pace: We’re in the middle of a sixth mass extinction…we’re also facing a climate crisis of epic proportions, which is inextricably linked to the nature crisis. The Trump administration has taken a hatchet to every protection we have to halt these accelerating crises. Trump has sold off our public lands for development, gutted ESA, opened the Arctic for drilling…disregarded tribal sovereignty, disregarded climate change and climate science and tried to wipe the record clean from their agencies. The next few years will be critical: We must act swiftly to reverse the terrible danger this administration has done, we can’t just reverse the damage of the last four years, that would be like putting a Band-Aid on a life-threatening wound.

It’s my hope in the next four years we see bold action to tackle climate change and address the nature crisis. On democracy issues, the president has abused his office for gain and the gain of his wealthy donors…this administration has led a coordinated assault on voting rights; foreign adversaries are attempting again to interfere in our elections. Under this president, so-called public servants use their offices to help themselves and their friends instead of the people they are supposed to work for. The good news is we can change all this: We can end the reign of big money, stop political gerrymandering

The worst parts of politics becoming the default setting is the worst piece for me, so much so that it’s hard to even notice that they’re happening. My biggest hope is that we don’t wake up the day after the election and forget what these four years have been like and what brought us here—that we have a collective reckoning with the fact that it wasn’t just one man, but it was our culture coming to slowly accept the unacceptable.

We’ve seen in their response to COVID what happens when you undermine government and trust in government. This is a moment when leadership in government is so needed and because we haven’t had it…we’ve lost lives, we’ve lost livelihoods, our economy is—to put it technical terms—a mess. I think the next four years is about rebuilding that trust and recreating the kind of world where we create justice and equity.

I think what we have seen is that Trump and the Republicans have sought to undermine any trust in government and any sense that we can work collectively to address our issues, and that allows them to roll back regulations, to roll back health and safety protections, to roll back protection of environment, to give free rein to the largest corporations and richest individuals and create the most inequitable economic structure we’ve seen since the 1920s. What I hope to see in the next four years is that we build back that trust. We know we need government to educate our children, we know we need it to protect our workers, to protect our environment and, as I always say, to create the foundation upon which our communities can thrive and our businesses can thrive.

I think the best description of the Trump presidency for me is that it’s killed a lot of people. What I’ve seen is new and unexplored levels of human death through the handling of the pandemic, through expansion of extractive industries that exacerbates the end of the human population. I see Trump as a white supremacist rallying white supremacists from the highest office, which also leads to death. Locally, we have people shot at by white supremacists, who are being told to stand by, by the president of the United States. The most quantifiable aspect of the Trump presidency is a lot of people have died who wouldn’t have died if Trump had not been elected. My hope for the next four years is first that Joe Biden is elected…but more importantly, because a lot of my hopes don’t rest on electoral politics, my hopes are the grassroots movement and uprising that we’ve seen in an unprecedented way in the last three quarters of a year will continue and we’ll come together, not just as voters but as people and change the brutal violent issues of our nation at their core. My big hope is in the next four years is we can pass…the Green New Deal and preserve the plan that will preserve our planet for future generations and move toward unfunding and eventual abolition of police.

RESTRICTING IMMIGRATION IS BAD POLICY. Our Declaration of Independence submitted evidence that the King of England was establishing a tyranny. One example was his refusal to encourage immigration to the colonies.

Current immigration enforcement is driven by those who fear cultural diversity, but enjoy jazz, pizza, and Mexican beer.

We keep out inventors and innovators who have the gumption to reach our border in search of the rewards offered by the U.S. economy.

We keep out young families that just want to work hard, buy nice things, and stimulate our economy. Cities that have received the most immigrants have thrived: New York, Boston, San Francisco.

IT IS NOT ONLY BAD POLICY, IT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. (1) Our Constitution gives Congress power to regulate commerce and naturalization, not immigration; it reserves power over immigration to the states. The Supreme Court invented a Congressional power in upholding the egregious Chinese Exclusion Act. (2) No person shall be deprived of liberty without due process.

Immigration courts are a sham. Judges are ICE employees who serve at the whim of the President. Appeal is usually meaningless because the person has already been deported.

IT IS NOT ONLY BAD POLICY AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL, IT IS IMMORAL. We are all created equal. We have rights only because every adult human has those rights, not because of the happenstance of our birth.

Everyone has a right to liberty, which includes a right to travel.

If you deny that right to anyone, you deny it to yourself.

Apropos of that main pick, let us say that every time we think we’re about to start hating online performances because they’re not even close to as good as concerts, some dark horse appears as if from nowhere to whisper “Just hold on a little longer.” This week, it’s Lucinda Williams, as fine a songwriter as ever there was and a goddamned legend in the music world. Seems Williams has set up a six-part streaming concert series (including a tribute to her friend, the tragically deceased Tom Petty), and local promotions crew AMP Concerts is one of the proud and the few companies with access to the show.

FILM SAT/31 SCIENCE FICTION DOUBLE FEATURE If COVID-19 thinks we’re all about to just sit here and let traditions not happen, it’s sorely mistaken—especially as it applies to the (cult) classics like Rocky Horror Picture Show. In case you didn’t know—which, dammit, Janet, would be, like, really hard to do—it’s the tale of a lost pair of lovers who meet the super-sexy scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who’s on the cusp of revealing a super-sexy creation. With indoor theaters closed, it seemed no one would have a movie at which to throw toast this year. Luckily, Meow Wolf and the Motorama Drive-In saved the day, complete with a performance from drag troupe SAINTS BALL. Yes. A million times yes. ONLINE MUSIC SUN/1 EL MEJOR DIA It’s a mite heartbreaking to see the Santa Fe museums open briefly then be forced to close again due to rising COVID-19 numbers. But that doesn’t mean they stop doing things, not even at all. Take the Museum of International Folk Art—one of our favorites and just the type of place you’d expect to host a virtual Dia de los Muertos party on Nov. 1. The whole thing goes down free on Facebook Live and features Albuquerque folklorico duo Las Flores del Valle.

It’s Twitchy DJs D-Monic and Sol releive some of the heaviness Given the shape of our past seven months, it would be easy to turn our backs on live music’s new form. No concerts hurts, it turns out, and it sometimes feels like there are only so many livestream events we can handle on a regular basis.

It’s not the same. Performers seem tired.

Viewers are most definitely tired. What’s a music fan to do?

“With all the heaviness and change going on in our world, we believe now more than ever it’s important to tune out and enjoy life for a while,” says Dominick Gonzales, aka DJ D-Monic. Gonzales joins forces with longtime fellow DJ Dynamite Sol (aka Sol Bentley) this week for House Party.

No, it’s not a stream of the seminal 1990 Kid and Play movie—though that would be awesome—it’s a Halloweenthemed dance party laser-blasted right into your home via the Twitch platform.

Originally a video game streaming service, Twitch’s evolution has found it serving as an everything-streaming kind of platform with elements of live chatting, high-quality sound and video and a little of that Samhain magic we need right now.

“The virtual house party is just that,” Gonzales continues. “An escape. Let’s just have fun together.”

Gonzales says the duo will share deck duties, spinning their very favorites of soul, reggae, hip-hop, funk and more.

We can reportedly expect some throwback numbers and some secret hits—a veritable cornucopia of well-known and lesser-known dance jams meant to soothe.

In a way, D-Monic and Sol have trained Santa Fe’s collective DJ-listening ear over the years with appearances at local clubs and fests. They’ll also accept tips through PayPal, Venmo and CashApp (watch for the links during the stream; musicians gotta make a living, too). So tune in, tip a few bucks and interact with others desperately missing that live music scene.

Reading in the Arroyo: An Occasional Column About Books

Déjà Vu: Another time, another plague B Y M O L LY B O Y L E a u t h o r @ s f r e p o r t e r. c o m

I

t’s late October, and this year’s curtain between the living and the dead is extra gauzy, maybe even a bit motheaten. The surging numbers of coronavirus can make for a daily jump scare, not that we need to go looking in a season that’s otherwise frightening in every possible way.

With all the fixation on “these unprecedented times,” a phrase that also feels moth-eaten by now, I sought to escape into something instructively scary for Halloween: horror, but make it historical, and maybe with a lesson of sorts. I settled on a literary relic set during a similarly ghastly time—the 1918 flu pandemic, which infected about a third of the world’s population in three or four successive waves, depending on whom you ask (just like now!).

Pale Horse, Pale Rider, Katherine Anne Porter’s 1939 triptych of short novels, reminds us that a pandemic raging across the world is indeed precedented. This one anointed an entire wartime generation with the toll of 675,000 unexpected US deaths—and it happened personally to Porter, a much-forgotten early practitioner of Southern gothic horror.

Born in Indian Creek, Texas, in 1890, Porter already had three divorces under her belt by the time she arrived in Denver in September 1918 as a newly hired reporter at the Rocky Mountain News. In October, she contracted the influenza that was laying waste to World War I soldiers and citizens in Denver. She nearly died. After months of convalescence, she was discharged from the hospital completely bald.

Her hair came back snow-white and stayed that way for the remainder of her life.

This near-death experience (tru-ly a scary story to tell in the dark) is central to the final tale in Porter’s collection of novellas. In Pale Horse, Pale Rider,, a young theater critic at the fictitious Blue Mountain News named Miranda is enjoying a fledgling love affair with Adam, a soldier bound any day now for the European theatre of WWI, when she contracts the deadly flu virus.

Before her dance with death begins, Miranda’s inner monologue crackles with sassy proto-feminist wit. One unpleasant dude at the newspaper with a bad habit of sitting on Miranda’s desk is drolly described as “a pursy-faced man, gross-mouthed, with little lightless eyes.”

Miranda seems to resent the majority of her entitled male coworkers, knowing her theater beat is merely a “routine female job.” She and the society columnist, Ye Towne Gossyp, are “considered fools by the rest of the staff—nice girls, but fools.”

They and other young women are expected to buy war bonds they can’t afford and to cheer up the ailing soldiers in local hospitals, knitting socks they don’t want to knit and parading around rows of men in beds with baskets of flowers and cigarettes.

Porter repeatedly and sarcastically underlines the dull futility of this women’s work: “So rows of young girls, the intact cradles of the future, with their pure serious faces framed becomingly in Red Cross wimples, roll cock-eyed bandages that will never reach a base hospital, and knit sweaters that will never warm a manly

chest, their minds dwelling lovingly on all the blood and mud and the next dance at the Acanthus Club for the officers of the flying corps. Keeping still and quiet will win the war.”

The novel’s whispered conspiracies about just where the 1918 virus originated are all too familiar. The gossip columnist believes it came from a camouflaged German submarine, which surfaced in Boston harbor and sprayed a greasy cloud of germs all over the city. She knows it’s true because she “read it in a New York newspaper,” an anecdote met with derision by her jaded colleagues, including Miranda. They jeer at the easy swallowing of this fake news. “Towney still reads the newspapers,” jabs the sports reporter, reflecting an inbred distrust of the media that’s at least 102 years old.

But the real terror in Pale Horse, Pale Rider comes when Miranda herself gets sick. Days bleed into months, Adam is no longer allowed to visit her, and the walls give way to a phantasmagoric ship at the edge of a horrible jungle, “a writhing terribly alive and secret place of death.”

Reading Miranda’s nightmarish hallucinations, I’m brought back to Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh’s recent description in the Los Angeles Times of nearly dying from the coronavirus, when

he lost all sense of time and space for several weeks in the hospital and believed he had been beaten by a brick by someone in downtown LA. This liminal space between life and death is the true Halloween haunt worth dwelling upon this year. Porter’s exploration embodies a literary empathy, of truly inhabiting another skin via fiction and resurfacing with all the chills you have channeled in that space. Miranda’s ever-changing delusions are transfixing as she battles death, and her evolution toward wellness and normalcy is a process we’re all realizing whether we have contracted COVID-19 yet or not. It’s somewhat dizzying to think of the century of strife, war and progress ahead of her as she wakes—as so many others have done this year—to find that her beloved has caught the virus from her and died.

This is scary stuff, to be sure. But I like to think the experience of Porter’s novel and Miranda’s grief can gird our loins for the darker half of this year, which is now upon us—and we’re not even dealing with a war (yet). At the end of Pale Horse, Pale Rider, a glimmer of light addresses the new, changed world we have waiting for us down this shadowy road.

“Now there would be time for everything,” Porter writes.

Zemeckis, Barris and Del Toro revisit the Roald Dahl tale

With 1990’s The Witches having reached a sort of cult status (mainly for ruining lives with that intro thing about the little girl trapped forever in a painting), it’s only natural to react to an HBO remake of the Roald Dahl story with consternation. But then you start seeing that names like Robert Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro, Kenya Barris, Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway are attached, and you breathe a little easier.

The story’s the same: A young boy (newcomer Jahzir Bruno) moves in with his grandmother (Spencer) after his parents die, and a fateful vacation to a ritzy seaside hotel coincides with the annual meeting of the witching world’s top brass. There, the Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has concocted a scheme for international covens to transform children into mice—they hate kids and mice are easier to stomp to death, it seems— and the young boy is swept up in the mania with some other recently-turned-mice types.

DAVID BYRNE’S AMERICAN UTOPIA

+ BYRNE RULES; THE MUSIC, DUH - COULD HAVE GONE DEEPER

It’s only slightly odd for Talking Heads front man David Byrne to claim his 2019 Broadway show, American Utopia, is merely based on the album and tour of the same name—it’s pretty much a concert. In fact, it absolutely is a concert (witty banter betwixt songs included). But rather than re-performing the live show he’d toured and call it a day, Byrne does his fans and newcomers a solid by assembling one of the greatest international bands of all time, tossing it onto a minimal stage to play a combo of new songs and hits and then hiring Spike Lee to direct the thing.

It’s borderline magical (and will be to many) and does that super-fun up-close-and-personal thing that seems to grow more popular the longer we’re pandemic-ing. But Utopia doesn’t quite reach the Elysian heights you maybe expected or heard about from Byrne’s legions of adorers. Love him or like him, though, you’ll never mistake his style for someone else’s. Plus, the man’s got jams.

What else could you want from one of the most seminal songwriters of our time and the creator behind 1984’s Stop Making Sense, arguably the single greatest contemporary music movie?

Here, however, Byrne plumbs the depths of his psyche in a way that feels more vulnerable than ever. Rampant throughout Utopia are thought pieces on a house vs. a home, Byrne’s relationship to brains and their chemistry (he’s famously autistic) and some pretty sweet if restrained 20

Del Toro/Zemeckis/Barris’ take, however, sets the action in the late 1960s, complete with Motown music cues, then centers Black actors while giving Spencer’s character a little voodoo know-how. The superior special effects wizardry of today adds a little more oomph.

As always, Spencer proves herself a national treasure. She cuts an empathetic figure during emotional scenes reflecting on life and loss; she phases into heroic and witty against daunting odds—she’s comforting but powerful at once.

Bruno as the young lad is serviceable enough, but Hathaway repeatedly steals the film as the horrifying Grand High Witch. Part Anjelica Huston from the original (because how could you not?), part Pennywise, Hathaway’s take oscilates jarringly between that of a glamorous wig aficionado to menacing monstrosity. Kudos to

The highlight, though, comes with Byrne’s cover of Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout,” wherein his ragtag band of singers, dancers, percussionists and rhythm-ers implore the audience to consider the countless Black Americans killed across time. “Say her name,” they command, or “say his name. Say their name.” Sandra Bland.

Ahmaud Arbery. Emmett Till. It’s a powerful tribute and an example of an artist using their platform for good. It also strikes a somber tone without keeping us there for good; the in-film audience, who danced in the aisles mere moments earlier, sits at attention while family members of the slain hold up large scale photos offstage. It’s chilling, but vital and hopefully reaches someone, especially as we barrel toward the election.

It also solidifies Byrne’s reputation as enduringly relevant, and though it might have been nice to get a little more insight into the nuts and bolts of the songs or even just the performance itself, folks will be talking about this one. As well they should. (ADV)

Hathaway’s use of the crazy eye technique, and kudos again for infusing just the right amount of humor to an objectively horrifying character.

Stanley Tucci’s in the mix as well, as is some early-movie narration from Chris Rock, though in both cases that hardly seems to matter. Those things exist and little else. Anyway, we’re just here for the hijinks and the horror lite elements.

As an added bonus, you can show this to your kids alongside the original movie then ask them to compare and contrast. That oughta kill a few hours.

all mine now,” Britain’s Special Operations Executive (kind of like their CIA) was like, “Hey, you know what? The world’s super-misogynist, so if we trained some women how to do spy stuff, they could probably operate in France without calling a lot of attention to themselves!”

And so they did. It’s a rather fascinating and thrilling bit of history told in great detail by filmmaker Lydia Dean Pilcher (Radium Girls) in A Call to Spy, one of the deeper non-documentary dives into the subject.

Recruiting from various military branches, secretarial pools, diplomatic administrators and the like, the SOE’s Vera Atkins (Castle’s Stana Katic) cobbles together a small batch of the first lady spies, sends them into Lyon and pretty much turns the tide of things for both the war and women forever. And though the film claims inspiration from numerous lady spies of the day, it mainly focuses on the efforts of the American Virginia Hall (spy name Bridgette, eventually the first woman agent of the CIA and played by Sarah Megan Thomas, who also produces here) and England’s Noor Inayat Khan (spy name Madeline, England’s first-ever wireless operator, female Muslim war hero and literal Indian royalty/descendent of Tipu Sultan; Radhika Apte).

It’s disappointing the bulk of the film goes to Hall’s exploits given Khan’s pedigree and resume and Atkins’ overarching war efforts, though the American certainly spent more time in the field bombing trains and busting

resistance members out of jail and doing other things that are probably more exciting for film. Thomas brings a quiet dignity to the role and achieves more with a simple expression than seems possible.

Apte, on the other hand, does what she can with less screen time and would-be inspiring lines like “I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing!” that tiptoe up to ham-fisted but make a certain kind of sense given the real-life woman’s obvious dedication (she apparently never spilled a secret after being captured by Nazis). Atkins cuts an intriguing story as well, a Romanian Jew repeatedly denied British citizenship despite her innumerable contributions to the liberation of France and Europe at large. She, too, gets fewer minutes than Hall, which becomes another disappointment given Katic’s bubbling rage and hard-won heartache in the face of duty and something larger than herself.

Pity, then, that the overall feel of the film is that of a BBC miniseries. It certainly tracks that Pilcher is trying to pack a lot of story into a brief couple hours, but some scenes feel unnecessary or burdensome, others too brief.

Those who didn’t know should take notice, however, particularly misogynists and closeted fascists. There was a time when the globe united over things like this, and unsurprisingly, women led the way in with more important actions than we realize. Invaluable history lesson? No question. Great movie? Maybe not.

JOJO was originally adopted together with his sister as ‘barn cats’ because they had been deemed to be feral. Sadly, this was not the case and the sister disappeared shortly after adoption. His adopters brought JOJO inside. He was desperate for a playmate, JOJO but the older cats in the home didn’t adapt to the energetic addition.

JOJO is a year old and is very outgoing and playful. He enjoys the company of other cats and kittens and would do best in a home with a playmate.

JAXX and LULLU were LULLU rescued when their family moved and left them behind to fend for themselves. A neighbor took them in until F&F had space. JAXX has an outgoing personality and is very social.

LULLU is very sweet and gentle. These cats are bonded to each other and have been waiting a long time for the right family to adopt them together. They are approximately two years old and would prefer a home without dogs, but may tolerate another friendly female cat JAXX in the home.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Reed Galen is an American political consultant who has worked long and hard for conservative causes. But in next week’s election, he opposes conservative Donald Trump, whom he regards as an authoritarian tyrant. He writes, “Democracy is on the ballot. It’s a binary choice between good/bad, honorable/dishonorable, healthy/ sick, forward/backward. There has been nothing like this in our lifetimes.” If you’ve read my words for a while, you know I’m a connoisseur of ambiguity and uncertainty. I try to see all sides of every story. But now I’m departing from my tradition: I agree with Reed Galen’s assessment. The American electorate really does face a binary choice between good and bad. I also suspect, Aries, that you may be dealing with a binary choice in your personal life. Don’t underestimate how important it is that you side with the forces of good.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Feeling too much is a hell of a lot better than feeling nothing,” declares Libran author Nora Roberts. I trust you will see the wisdom of that perspective in the coming weeks. On the downside, there might be some prickly, disorienting feelings arriving along with the rich flood of splendor.

But I’m convinced that most of the surge will be interesting, invigorating, and restorative—although it may take a while for the full effects to ripen. And even the prickly, disorienting stuff may ultimately turn out to be unexpectedly nurturing for your soul.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): aurus politician Dan Coats has belonged to the conservative Republican Party all his adult life. He served in the US Congress for 24 years, and later as President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence. Since leaving that office, Coats has criticized his ex-boss. He has said, “Trump doesn’t know the difference between the truth and a lie.” In accordance with astrological omens, I urge you to be fiercely non-Trump-like in the coming weeks. It’s crucial to the welfare of you and yours that you tell the whole truth.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Many stories that were popular long ago are still studied today. One example is the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, originally told during the first century BC. Another is Homer’s epic tale the Odyssey, which harkens back to the sixth century BC. I have no problem with learning from old tales like these. It’s important to know how people of previous eras experienced life. But for you in the coming months, I think it will be crucial to find and tell new stories—tales that illuminate the unique circumstances that you are living through right now.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I’m surprised when I hear that fans of Donald Trump enjoy my horoscopes. My political views, which are deeply aligned with my spiritual philosophy, have always been very progressive. And I’ve never hidden that fact. How can someone who appreciates my ideas also like Trump, a vile bully who has unleashed enormous cruelty and chaos? If you yourself are a Trump fan, I understand that after reading the preceding words, you may never read my words again.

But I need to follow my own astrological advice for us Cancerians, which is: Be bold and clear in expressing your devotion to the ideals you hold precious. For me that means supporting Joe Biden, an imperfect candidate who will nevertheless be a far more compassionate and intelligent and fair-minded leader than Trump.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio politician Joe Biden wasn’t my first choice for President of the United States. During the selection process, I championed his opponents Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. But now I support Biden wholeheartedly. He has several policies I don’t agree with, but on the other hand I know it’s critical that we Americans ensure he replaces the appalling, corrupt, incompetent Trump. In the coming days, I advise you Scorpios to also consider the value of wise and pragmatic compromise in your own sphere. Don’t allow a longing for impossible perfection to derail your commitment to doing what’s right.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The United States has suffered terribly from COVID-19. Of all the world’s countries, it has had more cases and more deaths. Why? One major reason is President Donald Trump. He has consistently downplayed the seriousness of the disease, has advocated many unscientific cures, and has been lax and erratic in supporting the therapeutic measures that virtually all epidemiological experts have recommended. It’s no exaggeration to assert that Americans will reduce their coronavirus misery by electing Joe Biden as president. In this spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to meditate on how you could reduce any and all of your own personal suffering.
