An open letter to New Mexico from AVANGRID From AVANGRID to the people of New Mexico, The AVANGRID family of companies is excited to join the Land of Enchantment through our merger with PNM. There is something incredibly special about New Mexico, and we are eager to learn and partner with you. When I last visited, there was a sense of innovation that radiated as I walked around Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I was impressed by the people and the passion that exists within your diverse State.

We at AVANGRID know that New Mexico is where we want to be. While your potential for renewable energy is extraordinary, it is your culture that sold us on New Mexico for a mutually beneficial shared future.

As excited as we are to form a long-lasting partnership with PNM and the people of New Mexico, we never intended to leave the impression that we were withholding information and if we created that impression, we apologize.

We want our partnership with New Mexico to be open, strong and resilient. As part of the merger proceeding, there were questions about the performance of our eight electric and gas utilities. We regularly disclose information about all our energy companies, and because those documents were public, we did not understand the NM Public Regulation Commission might want us to refile that information in the merger proceeding. We have not experienced this type of request in a merger proceeding before. We fully appreciate the importance of providing information about AVANGRID’s track record of managing its utilities.

That was our oversight.

We are proud to share information about the way we conduct business — we may not always get it right, and when we don’t meet customers or regulators expectations, we accept responsibility and take corrective action. We welcome the opportunity to share with you all aspects of our performance.

Here is what we would like you to consider as you weigh the benefits of our proposed merger with PNM: First, you may have heard that our companies in the Northeast recently received some fines or penalties, and I want to give you some context. Last summer, Tropical Storm Isaias resulted in widespread outages throughout the Northeast, including at two of our utilities in Connecticut and New York (United Illuminating and New York State Electric & Gas). United Illuminating received a proposed $2M penalty, while the other major utility in Connecticut, Eversource (which is not an Avangrid utility), received a $30M penalty. Similarly, New York State Electric & Gas received a $1.5M penalty, while other non-Avangrid utilities in New York received potential penalties of $102M for Consolidated Edison, $19M for Orange & Rockland and $16M for Central Hudson Gas & Electric.

We take safety, reliability, and storm restoration to heart. While we always strive to do better, I am proud of our employees who braved that storm and were able to restore power while keeping themselves and customers safe. While a fine of any kind does not reflect well, AVANGRID outperformed the other utilities in the region.

Second, several years ago, during the implementation of a new customer billing system, Central Maine Power Company (CMP) experienced service quality and billing issues. Implementation of the new billing system occurred just before we had an unusual cold snap and an increase in supply prices which is administered by the state. This led to dramatically higher bills. Customers questioned their accuracy. Several independent audits, however, found that 4

99% of our bills were accurate. We worked hard to address the other customer service issues, such as long customer wait times when calling into our call center. We put in the time and resources to understand the problems and address them. Now we are exceeding all service quality targets and are working to regain the trust of our customers. We are not afraid to implement change, but we are also not afraid to admit when we fall short of our customers’ expectations, and fix it.

Third, you may have heard that our energy companies in New York, Connecticut, and Maine have been subject to management audits. These audits are routine in these states and are like a detailed health check-up. While we’ve learned that New Mexico does not typically utilize management audits, many Northeastern states require periodic audits for all energy companies in the ordinary course of our work.

Another matter that we’ve notified New Mexico regulators about relates to a Spanish investigation that has recently included the Chairman of our parent company, Iberdrola, S.A., who is also Chairman of AVANGRID along with one other Iberdrola executive and two former Iberdrola personnel. What we told regulators was that this is an effort to obtain facts in conjunction with a longstanding investigation of 21 companies, there have been no formal charges or indictments of these 4 current and former Iberdrola individuals, and that Iberdrola’s Board informed the court over a month ago that any Iberdrola individual would be available to respond to any questions investigators may have.

As part of the merger proceeding, we have done our best to answer questions honestly and fully, and will continue to do so. We have committed to provide monthly updates to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission about any fines, penalties, and enforcement proceedings. We understand that you need this type of transparency to decide if AVANGRID is a good partner for New Mexico.

n early June, China reported a 41-year-old man had been infected with H10N3—a type of avian influenza—marking the first case of human infection from that particular strain.

I will admit the news passed me by as I, like so many others, remained focused on the continued repercussions of another zoonotic virus, SARS-CoV-2, the culprit behind COVID-19.

But for scientists like Jeanne Fair, the event emphasizes the fortuitous timing of a new initiative kicking off this fall: the Avian Zoonotic Disease Network.

A scientist with Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Biosecurity and Public Health division, Fair’s career has focused on epidemiology and animal disease ecology. As part of that work, she spent three years as the regional science manager in the Middle East and Central Asia region for the US Department of Defense’s Biological Threat Reduction program, which is supplying the grant for the new avian project. Along with researchers at Michigan State University, CRDF Global and in Georgia, Jordan and Ukraine, the work will specifically focus on the Mediterranean and Black Sea Flyway, the main migration route for birds between Africa and Europe, one of the least researched flyways.

The research the Avian Zoonotic Disease Network will undertake is interdisciplinary in nature, and will include scientists with expertise in bioinformatics, veterinary virology and epidemiology, to name a few specialties.

For Fair, these types of collaborations have become a passion. “Once any agency stops funding something, what’s left are the people and the relationships,” she says. And those long-term relationships benefit both long-term scientific inquiry and fast-moving crises.

An example of the former dates back 25 years, when Fair first set up a network of 400 nestboxes across the Pajarito Plateau in order to study wild bird populations. That project, which has also become a collaborative effort, reflects a common thread throughout all of Fair’s work, which is “trying to understand how environmental stress[ors] impact avian populations and individuals and how does that make them more susceptible or not to infectious diseases.”

Those multiple stressors also played a role in the mass bird mortality event in September 2020, when an estimated 1 million birds died in New Mexico

and southern Colorado as a result of drought, wildfire smoke and weather extremes. Fair notes in an essay she wrote in February that the mass bird mortality event led to the creation of a Southwest Avian Health Network to connect New Mexico ornithologists with those in neighboring states.

Unsealed Energy Proposed PNM and Avangrid/Iberdrola merger maintains support despite secrecy and concerns over independence

ith only a month until the $7.7 billion proposed merger between the local utility provider PNM and multi-state power company Avangrid comes to a decisive vote, support for the deal is strong and growing. Yet longstanding concerns raised by a small group of opponents remain—and now they have new ammunition.

Citing recently unearthed documents filed as part of the merger petition that’s pending before the Public Regulation Commission, New Energy Economy, an environmental action group, wants to hit the brakes on the deal.

The group points to issues of independent, local control over the proposed mega-company and a lack of transparency in the negotiation process. The management concerns mirror those of regulators in Maine, who expressed alarm over the governing board’s lack of independence five years after a similar merger in that state to the one proposed in New Mexico.

But other environmental groups and state agencies favor the merger because, from their perspective, the deal offered

by Avangrid and its Spanish parent company, Iberdrola, presents the best future for New Mexicans.

Avangrid announced its intention to acquire PNM last October and has since made tweaks and stipulations to the deal to gain support from organizations and the public. Those efforts have not endeared all New Mexicans and, more than once, the PRC has admonished Avangrid to be more forthcoming in its dealings.

Throughout the months-long process, PNM and Avangrid have been filing documents to support their petition and labeling them “confidential.”

A handful of them became public after an order from the PRC hearing examiner, whose June 25 ruling makes clear the state’s legal standards for transparency.

“A document does not deserve confidential treatment merely by designating it as such,” hearing examiner Ashley

Schannauer writes in the recent order denying the joint applicants’ confidentiality claim.

In one unsealed document, Avangrid outlines a condition for the deal’s approval: To ensure regulators can’t place a “burdensome effect” on the company. The agreement would eliminate the opportunity for PNM to have an independent board that would oversee the merged company—which, as New Energy Economy points out, runs against the grain of corporate governance best practices.

Joanie Griffin, a New Mexicobased public relations specialist who works for Avangrid, writes to SFR in an email that the current proposed structure of Avangrid’s board is to have either five or seven members, with at least 40% of them independent of Avangrid/Iberdrola.

The New York Stock Exchange dictates that publicly listed companies must have a majority of independent directors.

But Griffin says Avangrid is exempt from this designation because more than 50% of the business is held by the parent company.

“Independent board members are not needed to ensure safe and reliable service to customers at reasonable prices,” Griffin writes.

Mariel Nanasi, executive director of New Energy Economy, says the board’s current structure demonstrates “Avangrid/Iberdrola’s refusal to allow an independent PNM board to act separately from the control and dictates of Iberdrola’s ruling chairman and executive committee.”

This concern is especially troubling since Iberdrola’s CEO is under investigation in Spain for alleged spying.

In Maine, a similar acquisition of the state’s local utility company, Central Maine Power, by Avangrid took place six years ago. On Monday, Maine’s Public Utility Commission, a PRC contemporary, offered what might be considered a glimpse into New Mexico’s future with Avangrid.

Mexico will provide better electric service for PNM customers. O’Connell points to Avangrid’s experience managing utilities in the face of storm damage exacerbated by climate change.

O’Connell stresses the need for a balanced board makeup.

“We want to make sure PNM operates for PNM’s customers,” he says, adding, “We want the PNM board to have a bigger, broader view of what’s going on in the world.”

The New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, another signatory on the merger, agrees with O’Connell and his colleagues on the current structure of the board.

“We have pushed throughout the improvement of the stipulation to create as much local autonomy on that board as possible,” Matt Baca, AG Hector Balderas’ chief council, tells SFR. “I think there’s been significant movement in terms of what decisions are subject to local control.”

Another area of concern revealed in the unsealed documents: discussions over the Four Corners Power Plant, a coal-based generating facility from which PNM has committed to exiting its 13% ownership

by December 2024.

Nanasi says this deal isn’t necessarily in the public’s best interest, either. She says the Four Corners divestiture would stick consumers with a $300 million bill for abandonment and other energy transition costs.

Raymond Sandoval, PNM’s spokesman, likens this price tag to home improvements costs that must be completed before selling a house on the market.

While Balderas acknowledges “absolutely a need for transparency” and other groups SFR spoke with conceded the deal leaves some things to be desired, O’Connell says: “The merger provides the opportunity for a better future than what PNM alone has to offer.”

Yet Nanasi’s transparency concerns linger.

With the hearing examiner’s ruling only applying to a few documents, there remain thousands more not available to the public and, in some instances, even the PRC. And given these companies’ commitment to public interest, she still has questions around public transparency.

Economic analysts say lost oil and gas industry jobs won’t rebound in New Mexico

ew Mexico’s oil and gas industry has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels in key categories, delivering record amounts of petroleum to markets, money to state coffers and helping add record amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. But what haven’t rebounded are the state’s oilfield jobs, which are expected to remain 25% or more below pre-pandemic levels for at least the next five years.

According to recent projections from the Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) at the University of New Mexico, oil and gas jobs in New Mexico will return to only 74% of their pre-pandemic levels in the near future.

For years, state officials and industry boosters have pointed to oilfield revenues and jobs as the two main reasons for supporting an industry that also fuels the state’s climate emergency. Now, one of those key reasons is likely dissipating.

“Basically, the production of oil is becoming more efficient,” says BBER Acting Director Michael O’Donnell. The state is hitting “maximum levels of production” he says, “and yet employment is low.”

The BBER employment calculations rely upon a close reading of past employment, industry news and interviews with industry leaders, O’Donnell says. And there’s no question that the industry is pumping oil and gas from the ground at record rates, with fewer people.

Democratic state Sen. Carrie Hamblen of Las Cruces is worried about what happens to workers displaced by the shifting industry. “We have to put an infrastructure in place where the folks who are working in those jobs can get job training and make either equal to or more than what they’re making today so that they can support their families.”

One of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s primary goals upon entering office was to dramatically reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, more than half of which come from oil and gas production.

That goal led to two sets of state rules (one not yet implemented) designed to clean up waste and leaks in the industry.

But both rules depend heavily on self-reporting by operators. It’s not clear how those operators can monitor more than 53,000 active oil and gas wells in the state (and growing) with 26% fewer people in the field.

Hamblen says, “We now know how damaging this extractive industry is to the environment.” That’s a prime reason she’s working to diversify the state economy away from oil and gas.

“What are the logical and environmentally conscious ways that we can move forward?” she asks.

In the first quarter of 2020, there were about 25,000 people in New Mexico working in the mining sector, which mostly entails oil and gas jobs. A year and a global pandemic later, there are about 17,000 jobs in that sector—a 32% drop.

Dawn Iglesias, chief economist at the Legislative Finance Committee (LFC), which uses BBER reports in its forecasts for state legislators and other branches of government, says that total employment in the sector is forecast to rise to just under 19,000 jobs by the end of 2026, about 25% lower than pre-pandemic levels.

The BBER produces proprietary economic forecasts and reports for government agencies; it doesn’t share them publicly. The LFC’s Iglesias described what’s in the report, and Acting Director O’Donnell confirmed the details.

In particular, employment is down in the Permian Basin, the state’s largest, most productive oil and gas field.

Iglesias says the long-term drop-off in oil and gas employment isn’t too surprising in light of losses following previous petroleum boom-bust cycles. Carlsbad, for example, has see-sawed between boom-bust cycles for decades. The previous boom cycle busted in 2015 with the crash of natural gas prices, caused by overproduction across the country.

“To put this into context,” Iglesias says, “the state had about 28,000 mining jobs prior to [the] oil price crash of 2014-2015 and never recovered to those employment levels.”

the peak of the 2020 boom than in the 2015 boom. Yet 50% more gas and over 160% more oil was produced at the 2020 peak than during the 2015 peak.

This bust period is different as well.

Jobs aren’t gone because there isn’t demand for oil and gas, or because there are better jobs elsewhere. Quite the opposite: Oil production has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels in New Mexico, something that has not happened in other major oil producing states.

Rather, the jobs are gone because the companies haven’t hired people back.

In other words, it’s a boom for industry and—so far—a bust for workers.

Economists aren’t oracles, and their predictions aren’t set in stone. But they are useful to state legislators planning future budgets and state agencies estimating future projects.

Kelly O’Donnell (no relation to BBER’s O’Donnell) is a research economist at the University of New Mexico who also prepares economic analyses for institutions across the state. She also worked in state government during Gov. Bill Richardson’s administration and recently published a study on oilfield remediation possibilities in the state.

“One thing I know,” says O’Donnell, “is that anything related to the oil industry is devilishly difficult to predict….The margins of error are huge.”

However, there is concurrence with the BBER outlook for oilfield jobs in the Permian Basin.

“A forecast of oil patch employment?

That’s a tough one,” she says. “But that [BBER] forecast sounds very realistic to me.”

That’s in part because many of the world’s economies are transitioning ever more quickly away from fossil fuels. And many of those transitions are driven by climate change, which is driven by burning fossil fuels.

Notwithstanding recent rains, New Mexico is sweltering through one of its

driest periods in modern recorded history, just the latest reflection of the changing climate in the region.

Despite a now-overturned federal pause on new oil and gas leases on federal lands, a stockpile of thousands of previously approved drilling permits has allowed production to continue. The number of well-drilling rigs is rising, too. At a recent LFC meeting, Iglesias presented data showing that part of the state’s oil and gas good fortune stems from the low cost of pumping oil here, with break-even points roughly equal to those just over the border in Texas.

That’s in part because of geography.

Back in February at a state Senate committee meeting, Stephen Robertson, the executive vice president of the Permian Basin Petroleum Association, an industry trade group in Texas, said as much.

“If all things were left equal, and you’re purely deciding where to operate based off of geology, it would be in southeast New Mexico, out of the entire United States,” he said. “That’s where the rock is.”

The monetary windfall to the state comes with a risk: “The more that we rely on oil and gas activity in the budget mix, the more volatile the state budget,” Iglesias said at a June meeting of the LFC. Therefore, economists say the best way to stem that risk is to diversify the state’s revenue streams. No single industry can replace the windfall from oil and gas, which makes up a third of the state budget. But there may be money to be made—lots of it—from cleaning up after that industry now.

Earlier this month, Kelly O’Donnell released a report on oilfield remediation in New Mexico. It’s an industry that she says could bring billions to the state.

The key to that economic performance, though, is that New Mexico doesn’t end up paying for it. Otherwise, it would be “taking money from one pocket and putting it into another pocket,” she

From 2018 to early 2020, Carlsbad, New Mexico, was the epicenter of an oil and gas boom that was almost more than locals could bear. Eddy County Commissioner Ernie Carlson says there were housing shortages, empty shelves at Walmart and overflowing “man camps” at the edges of town, where oilfield workers—nearly all men—lived cheek-by-jowl in RV parks and trucked in temporary housing.

“We would have whole apartment complexes that would be built,” says Kayley Shoup, the director of Citizens Caring for the Future in Carlsbad. “And then Chevron or someone would come in and they would rent every single apartment for housing for their employees.”

Driving through the oilfield today, the wells are still pumping, and there is still the constant background whiff—sometimes overpowering—of benzene, toluene and other hydrocarbons seeping from well sites.

But in town, the boom appears to have deflated. The traffic is calm, the hotels once again have affordable rooms and there are dozens of homes awaiting sale.

says. The money would preferably come from the companies that drill in the state or the federal government.

“We really need to start preparing for a future in which oil and gas is not the source of jobs and revenue that it once was,” she says.

The well reclamation plan has twin benefits: It would plug thousands of wells currently leaking methane—a greenhouse gas that is up to 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide—and other toxins.

Plus, it could employ laid-off oilfield workers to essentially undo what they have done in past years as they employ their skill sets in reverse.

“Those would be oilfield jobs,” Kelly O’Donnell says. “No question about that.”

Head north or south out of town, and there aren’t nearly the number of white full-sized pickups or tanker trucks driven by oilfield workers.

Jobs across the state are projected to recover to pre-pandemic levels in the next two years or so, says Michael O’Donnell at the BBER—except in the Permian Basin counties of Eddy and Lea. They are “projected to do kind of the worst, really,” he says. It is the only

part of the state not predicted to return to pre-pandemic employment levels by 2026.

But some local and state leaders don’t believe the economic projections.

“I just don’t believe that way,” says Republican state Sen. Gregory Baca, the minority floor leader. “I follow what I see.

I talked to people within the industry, and that’s who I believe. I think they’re the most reliable source of information.”

When asked if he believes “people within the industry” more than the state’s economists, Baca says, “Yes.” Carlson has lived his entire life in Carlsbad, and he thinks that the Permian will boom again.

In fact, he wants the state to spend money on Eddy and Lea counties. “What I’m worried about is getting the infrastructure in place [so] that we don’t ever see the crisis that we had from the boom,” he says. And he saves particular scorn for the economic forecasts from BBER and the state’s Legislative Finance Committee that point to a muted rebound in jobs in the Permian.

“If you ever have spent much time in Carlsbad, you’ve got to know that’s bullshit,” Carlson says.

But the economists aren’t so sure.

“The transition away from fossil fuels is pretty inevitable. At this point, we don’t know how fast it will happen or exactly how it will proceed, but it’s going to happen,” says Kelly O’Donnell.

Her paper on oilfield remediation notes “international price wars, environmental liabilities and the accelerating transition to renewable energy are already eroding the industry’s economic dominance.”

She says, “What New Mexico needs to be thinking about is how to manage that transition in a way that is least detrimental to those communities that are really oil and gas dependent.” It’s an argument noted by economists across the state.

Doubling down on an industry with an increasingly troubled environmental and economic future is not something any of them recommend.

No Room for Improv-ment Brian Haas returns with some serious gunslingers Both longtime readers and jazz aficionados will no doubt be familiar with pianist Brian Haas. He’s a bit of an eccentric and an absolute beast of a musician whose improv strategies play out in solo shows, numerous one-off bands and with heavy-hitter projects Nolatet and Jacob Fredd Jazz Odyssey. To put it lightly, Haas is not fucking around—particularly with his newest act, Tephra Sound.

Originally assembled in New Orleans by cellist Helen Gillet (who has played with Arcade Fire and Iron & Wine, just to name a few), the trio also features Haas on piano and Beyoncé drummer Nikki Glaspie laying down the beat. For Haas, such musicians are longtime friends; for Santa Feans, they’re some of the most brilliant players to come through in ages, and Tephra Sound’s upcoming show at Leaf & Hive Brew Lab should, by all logic, become a massive affair.

“It’s fully improvised, but it’s also totally cohesive,” Haas tells SFR. “A lot of times, people think we’re playing written songs. It is full-blown, but listenable.

his working HQ. Santa Fe remains home base, however, especially when he’s not working, and he says the years he’s spent living in the foothills and hiking have given him a psychedelic appreciation for nature and the mountains that works its way into what he’s playing these days.

“I very much bring my own thing to the scene,” Haas explains. “I’m very much the shamanistic nature boy in that scene.”

So there you have it—something strange and unexpected, something that very well may never be reproduced again and in a small listening room in little ol’ Santa Fe. Expect also a performance from Haas side project Fat Minotaur (a play on Pat Benatar) featuring drummer Mikey Chavez. They don’t play publicly terribly often, according to Haas. Hudson’s work has dazzled the local theater scene both on and offstage for ages—and you can still catch her in stage show Red Bike through Teatro Paraguas before she goes. Still, this one’s a real blow to local arts, so we snuck in a quick Q&A before Hudson departs.

First of all, where the hell do you think you’re going?

Michigan. We’re moving to a little town called Cedar Springs, which is just outside of Grand Rapids, and it is a really neat and sort of in-between spot between my fiancee’s family and mine.

I absolutely love New Mexico, but I am more of a Midwest kind of of ecology person. I like gardening out here, but I’m still not that great at it—and I’m a really good gardener. My parents have a 40-foot apple tree that grew out of the compost, as an example. Also, if we were to stay here, we couldn’t afford a couple acres and a nice house. Knock on wood, we’re closing on about 6 acres in Michigan, and we’re gonna kind of homestead a little bit. That’s the plan.

Charla has a job as a band teacher with Grand Rapids Public Schools, and I’ve had an interview…for early childhood special ed.

An artist’s job is never truly done, but do you feel you accomplished what you set out to accomplish at Teatro Paraguas?

No. I’ll just say that because I don’t even want to say I’m closing the door.

Obviously it will be different, and I won’t be able to do whatever with Teatro Paraguas at a moment’s notice, as long as they’ll have me writing the Christmas show, taking minutes, working the online

fundraiser....I want to still be there for Paraguas.

I like that idea that I could ever be a person who says ‘I’ve completed the thing!’ But I’ve been very, very happy with many projects in many different ways.

The beauty of my plays being staged, that total honor, that total heart full-ness. I’ll never forget The Elliott Trilogy, getting to play a ditzy character, getting to play the characters I never thought I’d play—even getting to be in the Paraguas Orchestra on ukulele; I’m not very good, but I did it! I got to be creative in ways I never thought I would. I got to do soundscapes for several shows.

I guess that doesn’t fully answer it, but I feel like I’ve done a lot, and I hope there is still more. There may be a natural ending, but we have our biological family back in the Midwest, and we’ve really got family—familia—through Teatro Paraguas, and I know we won’t lose track of each other.

Is there anything you learned during your Santa Fe tenure that you’ll carry with you moving forward?

This is an education thing, not a theater thing, but especially during COVID, with teaching, or just teaching in general, that idea of starting to let go of perceived control. No, I guess that’s a theater thing, too. You know, my first show I directed in college when I was a junior, I just had this vision and I needed to see it through, but that’s the worst way to teach, the worst way to direct. It took me doing my first Benchwarmers [at the Santa Fe Playhouse], I think. I applied and got accepted, and I just sat and didn’t say boo when the director Jonah WinnLenetsky found all these things in my script that I hadn’t written, and I don’t know if I would have found that nuance.

He did a lovely job, and watching a gifted director direct my piece—that trust, to see where trust can lead you, and it’s the same thing in your classroom.

You can control small children, that’s the ugly truth, and people do it far too often. They manipulate them and control them to be little cyborgs, but it’s better if you trust that they’re curious, trusting, caring little people, and they have things they want to learn about. If you hold onto control, you’re not only going to fail, you’re going to do everyone a disservice.

You have to trust everyone is there. You trust your colleagues and your students and everyone’s going to do better and you’re not going to give yourself a heart attack at 35.

That’s something I’ve suspected for the last few years, but I’ve really learned now. This last year was a real reckoning space, and I asked myself who am I other than someone who does theater every night. I don’t feel I haven’t found myself, but I won’t go so far as to say I ‘selfactualized,’ but I’m pretty aware and I loved the people who were around.

Off the Chain Local advocacy group seeks to educate the community on why our food systems fall apart

issa Johnson’s love of healthy and non-industrialized foods goes way back.

“I started my life on an organic farm.

My parents were always concerned about real food,” she tells SFR. “I’m so excited when we have an apricot season, whether it be at the market; waiting for the chiles to be available. With eating locally, I feel a greater appreciation for those foods.”

Johnson and Nina Rosenberg are two executive board members from Slow Food Santa Fe, the local chapter of an international organization that aims to illuminate concepts around eating healthy.

Santa Fe’s chapter is headed by Johnson, Rosenberg and Ellen Lampert, and is one of 60 nationwide. On a broader scope, Slow Food is dedicated to preserving traditional food cultures, promoting biodiversity in our diets and raising awareness on how food gets made. Closer to home, Johnson and Rosenberg have more than a casual relationship with food—they see an expression of soil health, climate change, big agriculture, small farms and strained supply chains.

“Not a lot of people think about this,” Rosenberg explains, “but with the pandemic, we’ve got to ask ourselves: What role do we have?”

“We realized there were so many issues around food, food supply and food issues,” Johnson adds. “We wanted to start with growing foods and talking about healthy soils here in New Mexico, then moving into production and supply chain issues and up to the role of the eater.”

The next steps are in the Food Systems series, a number of video talks produced

by Slow Food Santa Fe that cover major aspects of food production in Northern New Mexico and beyond. The upcoming episode, aptly titled “Nobody Cares About Supply Chains ’Til They Break,” focuses on regional food producers and distributors and how they managed during COVID-19 when so many basic food items were suddenly marked up or sold out. The panel includes Erika Newman and Jennifer Knapp from La Montañita Co-op, Thomas Swendson of New Mexico Harvest, and Michael Venticinque of the New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association.

Such concerns go beyond the pandemic, according to Judith McGeary, founder and executive director of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance and the Council for Healthy Food Systems. In a previous talk on meat raising and processing for Slow Food Santa Fe, McGeary noted how the pandemic exploited fault lines that were already there.

In fact, small farms have been declining for decades with the monopolistic growth of Big Ag. Additional challenges like climate change’s impact on small farmers (which SFR explored last year; “Farming Without Rain,” Sept. 16, 2020) and the demand for fast-produced food leave many family farms unable to compete—and makes us far more dependent on fragile systems.

“When these mass slaughterhouses shut down [during the pandemic] because their worker conditions were so terrible, the first thing that happened was a ripple effect,” McGeary said in her talk in May. “It rippled to the small-scale local processors. Most of the small-scale meat processors have a waiting list of one to two years, sometimes registering before the animal is even born. That’s not a very good way to run a system.”

She went on to explain how many of the large-scale Big Ag processors rely heavily on undocumented workers, whose ability to protest conditions are limited.

And while New Mexico’s meat processing plants reported lower outbreak numbers than in other states (the largest being around 100 cases in the border town of Santa Teresa), such hiring policies ultimately make it easy for things to spiral out of control. As a result, the cost of meat rose 5% to 10% last year.

Our bank accounts aren’t the only things at stake when prices rise and the public panics. Sherry Hooper, executive director of The Food Depot, tells SFR that when food supply chains are disrupted, it’s often the most needy who suffer.

“We saw a few disruptions to the supply chain. Mostly, the issue [last year] wasn’t the quantity for us, but the deliveries were postponed or delayed,” Hooper explains. “A lot of the manufacturers had smaller staff because people elected to stay home, so orders couldn’t be processed very

fast. The wait ended up being six weeks sometimes.”

In the ensuing economic turmoil, the challenge of feeding the needy intensified, Hooper says, but food resources dwindled in all areas.

“Donations from the grocery stores dried up because the stores didn’t have food to donate, and we paused individual donations over transmissibility questions,” she continues. “Normally the stores donate excess foods to us that we pick up.

We saw much fewer donations from the stores as a result because there was nothing available and no one knew when things would be reliably back.”

All the while, livestock were still slaughtered as there was nowhere to take them, and countless gallons of milk were dumped as truck drivers stayed home.

Still, Rosenberg of Slow Food Santa Fe notes individual consumer choices hold the power over these fragile systems. When we’re more educated about where our food comes from, there’s less risk. That’s where the talks come in.

“We want to make it easy to learn about these issues,” Rosenberg says. “As consumers, we’ve only got two levers: deciding where to spend our money, and to vote.

This is an opportunity to talk to local producers and distributors about what they’ve experienced and what changes they’ll implement.”

Both Rosenberg and Johnson see individual change as the first step in larger reforms.

“Before we advocate for change, we needed to learn more and inform ourselves,” Johnson explains. “As eaters, it’s an investment where we spend a dollar. That’s investment in a whole chain. It has an impact on so many people’s lives.”

The Santa Fe Opera returns with The Marriage of Figaro’s enduring tale of love and forgiveness

I

n the third act of French author Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’ play, The Marriage of Figaro, the titular character references an Italian expression: Tempo e galant’uomo: “Time will show in the end who means harm and who doesn’t” in the Penguin edition; sometimes also rendered as, “time is a gentlemen.”

So it is in Mozart’s opera, where no matter how many schemes, misunderstandings and revelations ensue (and many, many do), the audience for this opera buffa (comic opera) knows all will turn out well.

But time itself is a character in the opera, and not always a lighthearted one in the Santa Fe Opera’s moving production. As written, all the events take place in the course of 24 hours (Beaumarchais’ play is alternatively titled The Follies of a Day). In the current production, time remains front and center throughout, courtesy of French set designer Chantal Thomas’ revolving turntable, which resembles a large clock accompanied by massive brass gears that convey both the passage of time throughout the opera’s

four acts (the play itself is close to three and a half hours long), Beaumarchais’ early career as a watchmaker and the whirling components of the opera’s complex plot and themes. When still, the set presents time as an overbearing, even dogmatic, presence. In motion, it becomes a force unto itself, and a dizzying one at that.

First performed in 1786 in Vienna, The Marriage of Figaro ranks high on all the top operas in history lists—in his pre-opera talk, lecturer Oliver Prezant references Brahms’ description of every number in it as “a miracle”— as well as a showcase for the collaborative magic between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (who also wrote the librettos for Mozart’s operas Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte).

Beaumarchais first introduced audiences to the characters in The Marriage of Figaro in his play The Barber of Seville (which also became an opera, this one

by Rossini). Mozart’s “sequel” opens with Figaro (bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee in his company debut) and his fiancee Susanna (soprano Ying Fang, also debuting) preparing for their wedding— Figaro by taking measurements for their marital bed and Susanna by trying on

her bridal hat—when the first obstacle to their union emerges. Count Almaviva (baritone Samuel Dale Johnson, in his SFO debut), whom Figaro serves as a valet, plans to use a medieval feudal right, aka jus primae noctis or Le droit du seigneur, to bed Susanna, Countess Almaviva’s maid, on her wedding night.

Figaro begins to hatch a plan to thwart the count’s intentions, which swiftly becomes a widening web of machinations and mishegoss snaring a larger cast of characters.

While the original play was incontrovertibly critical of the ruling class— Beaumarchais wrote it just before the French revolution, which he supported— the opera cares less about class warfare and more about love. Santa Fe’s production, however, splits the difference.

According to the opera’s press materials, French director and costume designer Laurent Pelly took inspiration for both elements from Jean Renoir’s La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game), itself inspired by The Marriage of Figaro, which is set in another tumultuous period of societal change: the late 1930s. To that end, the lower classes in this production wear only black and white, whereas the count and countess don colorful outfits—

with the countess’ fuchsia dressing gown playing a particularly key role when Countess Almaviva (soprano Vanessa Vasquez) and Susanna change outfits in one of the later hijinks. The count’s castle is a five-part black and white modular construction, with much of its windows and bricks rendered as drawings. The house itself also moves, changes shape, becoming more disordered as the opera reaches its crisis action and resolution.

This more meditative and less raucous approach (although there are plenty of funny moments throughout the production, particularly courtesy of the scene-stealing mezzo-soprano Megan Marino as the count’s lovesick and mischievous page Cherubino), feels particularly suited to our particular time.

The Santa Fe Opera’s opening night last weekend was a return after a missed season due to COVID-19, and the audience in the theater who stood in standing ovation at its end all wore masks in a theater where some seats were cordoned off to allow for social distancing, while others watched a simulcast from their cars in a new initiative the opera introduced this season. In another sign of the times, director Pelly was unable to come to Santa Fe due to the current international travel restrictions, so Laurie Feldman directed his concept, whereas Brownlee stepped in for British baritone Ashley Riches, who was similarly unable to come to the US. Such an environment might seem like a lot of pressure for the singers and musicians performing the first night, but if anything, the music and voices—many performing on the stage for the first time—all rose (some quite high) to the occasion. Standouts included Vasquez’s countess, who rendered her character’s suffering from her husband infidelity and willingness to forgive him with pained and believable dignity.

Fang is particularly wonderful in the role of Susanna (which she sang previously for the Dutch National Opera), with a particular high point when she disguises herself as the countess, in bearing and voice, to sing her “rose” aria in Act IV, “Deh vieni non tardar,” declaring her love for Figaro, and also signaling the dreams she has of a transformed situation and world—a dream borne out soon as the long day finally ends in reconciliations.

The Doctor Is In Hezekiah Farrell’s Love Doctor character drops weird and excellent Pressure Vol. 1

A

t this point in human history, no musician should be forced to defend autotune. The digital tool was originally developed to fix minor vocal mistakes made during the recording process, but its late-aught rise to the mainstream courtesy of about a million rappers—most notably T-Pain—drew ire from purists (ugh, purists) to the point that Usher told T-Pain in 2013 that its use “ruined music.” Those comments reportedly sent T-Pain into a deep depression; perhaps in parallel, autotune became more rarified. But as digital collaboration in the hip-hop sphere becomes more and more commonplace, and as Soundcloud rappers interact and write together across borders, autotune is making a strong comeback.

Even Santa Fe plays host to a burgeoning scene.

“Autotune is...wow, how do I say this?” queries Hezekiah Farrell, a local MC, producer, dancer and circus artist. “OK, couple things: Autotune is inhumanly beautiful.

The things you can do, the way you’re able to make melodies—you can do the craziest things with autotune.”

Farrell goes by Love Doctor on his new mixtape, Pressure Vol. 1, a 12-track collaboration featuring nine MCs, producers and engineers—all from Santa Fe and all interested in challenging the notions of music and beat production, lyricism and autotune’s place in the hip-hop pantheon.

Farrell’s the only MC you’ll find on every song, and his flow feels both very much contemporary but with old-school soulful flavors. Pressure Vol. 1 hit Soundcloud on July 1, but it all started during an unassuming trip to Philadelphia in February.

“My girlfriend and I were in the house a while for the quarantine, so we went to Philly just for a change, and it was so dope,” Farrell recalls. “Art everywhere, murals everywhere, music...it was very inspirational, and I was trying to get with these [Santa Fe] guys idowhatvr and ChapterMillion before I went out there—that didn’t happen, but I made a song while I was there and sent it to them, and homies sent it back in 30 minutes. When I got that kind of response, I immediately sent out seven other songs to seven other people.”

That first song is called “Aphrodisiac” and appears on the new mixtape. A smooth and sexual autotune bonanza, Farrell says he culled from his reality and his desires when writing; music production and lyricism are nothing new to Farrell. He grew up in a house devoted to hip-hop. His father, from whom he says he’s estranged, was a hip-hop artist and signed with a label in his 20s; his mother, the writer Oriana Lee, also spits verse.

“There was always music and beat machines around the house. Hip-hop is very ingrained in my family, almost like a religion,” Farrell explains. “[My siblings and I] have always been around that, and because my parents rap, we even rapped for school. I was, like, 11 when I started freestyling.”

Later, as a teen, Farrell would produce nearly 500 songs—only to erase them all.

“I didn’t think they were good enough,” he posits with a laugh.

That was when he was 18; he’s 22 now, and has been producing constantly in

those four years. Part of it is the hip-hop love, part of it was falling in love with sound. Farrell has worked freelance for numerous musicians and rappers and designed sound and foley for the Santa Fe Playhouse. He balks at the concept of claiming the self-taught mantle, but points to YouTube tutorials, books about audio and home experimentation as his main teachers.

“I’m my own coach, if that makes sense,” he says.

Call it what you like, Pressure Vol. 1 has a studio quality sound, even if creating hip-hop is far more accessible than other genres according to Farrell.

“Everything is so digital now, but 20, 30 years ago everything was all hardware,” he points out. “Everything now is in Logic or whatever software you use—you could have a studio just by spending money for the computer. You don’t even need speakers, just headphones.”

Another blow for purists, perhaps, but another step in the democratization of releasing music. With Love Doctor, Farrell not only pushes Santa Fe hiphop forward, he’s got the beginnings of something excellent.

“We’re just trying to make fun shit,” he says.

Black Widow Review The Bourne facsimile

In some ways, Black Widow is an exciting addition to the Avengers-verse. In others, it’s a tiring reminder that the tone and feel of the endless slew of Marvel films has become as formulaic as possible.

In either case, we finally get a second woman-led Marvel movie (after 2019’s Captain Marvel), and Florence Pugh (Midsommar) is in it and easily becomes the best part of something that also has the ever-brilliant Rachel Weisz and a pretty funny David Harbour. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson, too.

We pop into the story at some point after the second Avengers film during which time the supers of the world are on the run from Secretary Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) and his Sokovia Accords, a legislative act that would require Avengers types to register with the government (it’s the lead-up to that Captain America: Civil War movie). Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Johansson) is not down, so she flees to Scandinavia to watch James Bond movies and sulk. But when the sister we never knew she had (Pugh) reappears to remind everyone the evil Dreykov (Ray Winstone as a vague amalgamation of Cold War-era Soviet maniac and boogeyman) is still raising up lady assassins—also called Black Widows—Natasha is forced to reunite with the only non-Avengers family she’s

In 1969, with the country’s eyes on Woodstock and the moon landing, the Harlem Cultural Festival took over Mount Morris Park (today Marcus Garvey Park) in New York City for six consecutive weekends of shows—every last one of them something incredible. Stevie Wonder, The Fifth Dimension, Nina Simone, BB King, Hugh Masekela, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Pops Staples and the Staples Singers, Mahalia Jackson and on and on and on and...

The series was promptly lost to history.

Oh, it was filmed professionally by a guy named Hal Tulchin (who died in 2017), but nobody wanted to buy the historic, brilliant, crystal-clear, world-changing footage. And so it sat in some basement for the last 50 years, until Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (of The Roots) caught wind of it, unearthed the tapes and put together his first documentary—Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a bit of an indie darling that wowed crowds at Sundance and now comes to theaters and streaming service Hulu.

First things first—it’s almost unbelievable such a feat took place. As we learn in the film, Black culture was phasing from stories of trauma and staid, “acceptable” forms of dress, culture and existence. It was ’69, the year the world first heard the phrase “Black is beautiful;” the year former 28 28

ever known (Pugh, Weisz and Harbour) to do back flips and punch throats and stuff.

If you’ve seen the Bourne movies, you’ve seen the bulk of this one, and Black Widow feels particularly silly given its place in the Marvel timeline—y’know, since regular viewers already know everything that happens to Natasha down the line, which ultimately dials back the thrills and chills and makes any dangerous situation feel moot. She will survive this movie. We know that. What are the stakes again?

Jet-setting to locales like Morocco and Budapest, our heroines get into crazy car chases and close-combat brawls and pseudo-philosophical conversations about what’s right or wrong, what made them not wanna assassinate anymore and whether there’s, like, a soul or whatever. You half expect Matt Damon of Franke Potente to be driving the car before it’s back to Marvel madness.

Ironically, the action bits in Black Widow begin to feel tedious while the quieter and more human moments are what ultimately make the mov-

So why, when Woodstock amounted to little more than three days of miserable mud, neardeaths and some of the most notoriously terrible performances of all time, do so few people know about the Harlem Cultural Festival? As Tulchin tells Thompson in the film, he tried to sell it as “The Black Woodstock,” later lamenting how that didn’t help one bit.

But today, through interviews with performers, promoters and attendees, Thompson paints a picture of a world in flux both defined and spurred by the soundtrack of the festival, and it is glorious.

Unlike other music docs, Thompson highlights longer performance sections (Jackson, Simone, King and Stevie shine in particular), but whereas Summer of Soul could have been strictly about the music, we veer into the overarching American culture and race politics of the day.

A response could go either way for viewers.

On one hand, this is well-worn territory, particularly within the documentary milieu. Other films have dug deeper and been more effective in their storytelling, and Thompson’s glimpses can feel rushed before it’s back to footage of some other notable performance from the fest. On the other hand, how would one even begin to tell the story of the series’ impact without digging into the events that helped cause it? Thompson does well in tying performances to events, especially

ie almost worth watching. Well, that and Pugh’s pitch-perfect Russian accent and combo of badass and funny. Oh, sure, it’s great to see an explosion or a motorcycle chase, but we’ve seen those all before. SO MANY TIMES. Dipping into ideas of humanity, family, responsibility and love are the real draw here, even if they’re glossed over repeatedly for that thing Marvel movies do wherein a single, mildly funny joke (for fans only!!!) is beaten into the ground.

Anyway, you already know if you’re going to see this or not, so the best I can ask is that you not be one of those “Actually...” misogynists who believes their scorn toward a woman-led comic book movie is anything other than hate. It’s summer. Theaters are open again. What the hell else are you doing on a Sunday afternoon?

when someone like present-day Marilyn McCoo tearfully squeaks out that she was “so happy to be there,” or a civilian attendee points out how their entire worldview changed during the course of the festival.

Summer of Soul goes beyond mere journalism to highlight the Harlem Cultural Festival’s vast importance without finger-wagging. If we weren’t there, we likely wouldn’t have known. And while that’s certainly outrageous and another example of the whitewashing of America’s cultural history, Thompson seemingly wants us to just be glad we know now. It’s not hard to do so—and you’re not likely to find another gathering of musicians that feels as joyous as this probably did in your lifetime. Even watching it in a theater feels celebratory. + IT’S, UH, KINDA FUN? - BAD LOGIC; WIDE ANGLE LENS DISTRACTS

The moves of No Sudden Move are indeed sudden. You could make the argument it’s a purposeful style—the use of Warner Brothers old studio card at the beginning is a hint you’re getting something like the great spy thrillers of the ’70s, a la The French Connection. You aren’t getting that.

Steven Soderbergh’s latest crime thriller is engaging and at its best when it has fun with the premise. Don Cheadle and Benecio del Toro (both of whom starred in Soderbergh’s Traffic 21

years ago) play old-timey criminals who take on an easy job holding a family hostage for a few hours. But the simplicity is only a facade; the crime is far more complex than either anticipated and things—get this—fall apart. The criminal corporate espionage world of Detroit’s automobile industry in the 1950s draws them into a plot that changes and moves like a cheerleading routine.

As a meat-and-potatoes crime thriller, No Sudden Move feeds, but after the sixth or seventh twist, it’s almost like screenwriter Ed Solomon (the Bill & Ted movies) is begging you to understand he’s clever. It’s the cinematic equivalent of that literary type you meet at a party; he’s cool, but keeps following you around to talk Dostoevsky even when you’re getting into your car to go home. Soderbergh is checking boxes and moving on to the next thing.

No Sudden Move is shot in anamorphic wide lens for God-knows-what creative decision, but it’s like watching the actors through the fish tanks at Petco. This isn’t a direct-to-streaming accident, either, and it would’ve looked just as foolish in a theater. No longer can we give brownie points for faux CinemaScope and fake old-timey choices. (Yes, Mank, this is also directed at you.)

Fan of the Ocean’s 11 series, or anything from the Coen Brothers? Here you go, have fun.
