I really appreciated the article “Targeted for Pollution” by Katherine Lewin. Before reading it, I knew nothing about the Associated Asphalt and Materials operation except where it is on the highway. New Mexico has a deep and rich history (pun intended) of mining and milling its natural resources, but the Santa Fe Eavesdropper would never overhear that tidbit around town. The blue-collar worker isn’t genuinely appreciated here. So, Associated Asphalt and Materials intends to “operate around the clock...365 days a year”? Reads like new job openings with consistent hours and benefits. Reads like trade opportunities for young adults, including those who live in the Southside.

I understand the concerns and complaints of the environmental stewards, but isn’t it obvious that tough sacrifices must be made to sustain our city? Santa Fe’s favorite industry has been closed for months except for carry out, and many of its workers have been laid off! The City Different needs a different employer to hire its working class, who should only need a high school diploma (or GED), a strong back, and a good attitude to apply. etails about hundreds of eviction cases handled in the Santa Fe Magistrate Court over the last decade run across Samuel Taub’s computer screen as he watches his coding analyze and organize the information. The cases and resulting data tell a story: Eviction filings by landlords are down month over month in 2020 compared to the averages of 2010 through 2019.

For example, during the second week of October in the past decade, the average number of eviction filings was 22.5. This year, when the state has imposed a moratorium on evictions due to non-payment of rent because of COVID, only four were filed.

This pattern has held throughout the year as the state rule has largely appeared to stop landlords from kicking out tenants.

This doesn’t particularly surprise Taub or

the other University of New Mexico law students and researchers working on what they aim to become the first in-depth, statewide look at eviction data.

Taub and the other researchers wonder how the status of a moratorium at the federal level could also impact New Mexicans.

“There’s less filings,” Taub tells SFR. “That’s a strong indicator that there are fewer evictions…Although I think what the new concern is, the stay ends on Dec. 30, the CDC one does, and so I think people are worried that Congress isn’t going to pass any sort of relief this month and then that’s going to expire and then next month it’s going to be a disaster.”

The data, still behind a password-locked website as the team prepares to release it more publicly early next year and with info from more counties, also appears to show the south and west sides of Santa Fe have seen historically higher rates of eviction cases than other parts of the city. That trend has also not surprised Taub, who grew up in Santa Fe. “I have a heavy bias having grown up here; I just have a narrative in my head of what’s happened,” Taub says. “But it certainly looks like the eastside of Santa Fe isn’t experiencing any of the magnitude of eviction problems that the south and west side are…It’s just become more and more, I feel anecdotally, racially imbalanced.”

Evictions are also still happening through loopholes in the moratorium that allow landlords to evict for other infractions Taub lists: people not listed on the lease living in the unit, a broken car in the yard

or too much debris on the porch.

He and others at UNM hope the preliminary data will eventually inform officials who are working to make better policy to keep people in their homes during and after the pandemic.

Assistant Professor Elizabeth Elia, who teaches property and land use law at UNM and also rotates into the economic justice clinic for landlord-tenant case work, started the research project over the summer with several of her students.

The group began with cases in Bernalillo County over the last two years, entering case details such as the reason for a claim and its outcome in the absence of user-friendly aggregation of case data in the court system there.

After he witnessed the slog of the manual process, Taub wrote a program, starting with the Santa Fe Magistrate Court, to aggregate and analyze the data. Now, researchers also have preliminary data for Bernalillo Metro, Doña Ana Magistrate and Sandoval Magistrate courts. Elia wants to get Taub more help to complete the data for the state, which updates on a weekly basis, so the tool can contribute to other national studies.

“We’re really lucky in that we’ve had good models for what type of data that we might expect to be able to see through the National Eviction Lab project,” Elia says.

“They collect this type of data for all different states around the country for evictions and they had been struggling to get information from New Mexico because we don’t have an easy way of accessing the information. So we’re trying to help fill that gap for New Mexico.”

Elia started thinking about the impact of evictions on New Mexicans before the pandemic, when she wanted to compile the data in order to look for connections between housing stability (or instability)

and outcomes in childrens’ education. The pandemic was just a foot on the gas pedal for the project because the state was “late in the game” to apply an eviction stay for COVID-related non-payment of rent.

The New Mexico Supreme Court ordered a temporary moratorium on evictions for those who are unable to pay rent during the public health emergency over the spread of COVID-19 in late March.

Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber announced the city’s eviction moratorium a week before the state did.

“We were very eager to see what was actually happening with evictions as people were out of work and then once we had the moratorium in place from the Supreme Court, we wanted to see what was actually happening in courts, whether it was being upheld by the courts or applied by the courts or not,” Elia says.

“Now, as we look towards hopefully the end of the pandemic…across the country, there’s major concern that we’re going to have just an incredible wave of evictions… that have been stayed over the last six months or so.”

While the data is already answering some questions, such as how many evictions are being filed and where and for what, it creates more questions than answers, according to Elia: How likely is a “wave” of evictions? How big is it? When is it likely to crest and what can be done to prevent huge numbers of people from being evicted all at once as public health emergency orders expire?

The data might be useful to answer these questions and inform lawmakers in the next several months. One of said lawmakers is already in the loop. Rep. Andrea Romero, D-Santa Fe, is a second-year law student at UNM and also Taub’s classmate.

Romero tells SFR she plans to use the data at the upcoming legislative session to push policies that will update “outdated” housing policies, including extending the time people have to legally pay back owed rent as well as trying to fix patterns of housing discrimination.

“We’re already utilizing it to support some of our initiatives that we’re looking at in a large housing omnibus package,” Romero says. “Right now if you’re a landlord, you can deny someone on the basis of ‘I don’t like that you have a subsidy for this,’ and it’s completely legal, and we think that that is absolutely egregious… things like that are going into our overall package, and of course, increased funds overall…How can we extend these resources to folks who need support and who need it immediately?”

The result: a dogged but incomplete effort at drawing the parameters of a plague that has left countless Native families wondering whether their loved ones were taken, maimed or worse.

The Sentencing Commission, which looks at race and ethnicity issues from a criminal legal system standpoint, is working on a bill for 2022 that might assist the hunt for MMIWR data. The potential policy, modeled off of a recently passed law in Colorado, would require the collection of race and ethnicity data starting from the point of someone’s contact with the police. New Mexico’s Department of Public Safety would also establish a dashboard on its website that shows the race and ethnic breakdown of police contacts and arrests.

While the commission’s work is offender-focused, Sentencing Commission Deputy Director Douglas Carver says the ideas could be applied to more victim-centered data collection efforts.

“I think anything that focuses on these gaps in our information, our gaps in data, is useful for the whole concept,” Carver says. “And I think these discussions will help with the missing Indigenous women’s discussion because it raises the profile of the issue with the Legislature.”

Rep. Derrick Lente, D-Sandia Pueblo, one of the original sponsors of the task force bill, tells SFR that while he understands it had constraints because of the pandemic, there were a lot of things missing from the report: specifically, policy directives that legislators could push this session.

Lente says the limited availability of data and the pandemic contributed to the incomplete report. Despite the lateness of the group’s conclusions and the 2021 session’s constrictions, namely that each policymaker can only bring five pieces of legislation and the session will be virtual, Lente says that he is still considering a bill as a follow-up to the report in the upcoming session.

“I have no problem at all focusing on data collection, data sharing and communication as the next step,” Lente tells SFR. “The problem is not going away.”

ov. Michelle Lujan Grisham laid out her ambition to address climate change in New Mexico last year when she signed an executive order requiring the state to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030.

Despite the pandemic, the state has carried out most of its plans for the year toward that mission.

The highest-profile environmental policy of Lujan Grisham’s tenure so far has been adoption of the Energy Transition Act of 2019, which ordered the energy sector to move to 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Lawmakers have taken other steps toward reducing emissions in the last two years, including updating energy efficiency codes for new construction, creating solar development tax credits and investing millions in Volkswagen settlement funds into electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

It hasn’t been nearly enough to reach the emissions reduction goal. A recent progress report by the governor’s Climate Change Task Force found that on its current path, New Mexico would only get halfway there by 2045.

New Mexico produces more than twice the national average of harmful carbon emissions per capita. Electricity generation—which is the target of most recent climate change legislation—only accounts for 11% of the state’s total emissions and ranks third on the list of the state’s most polluting sectors.

At the top sits the oil and gas industry, which is responsible for 53% of the state’s total emissions.

“If we can’t reduce emissions in this sector, we are in trouble,” New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Secretary Sarah Propst said at an interim legislative committee meeting in November.

The transportation sector ranks second at 14%.

Unlike earlier estimates that were based on generalized national data with New Mexico factors built in, the task force created the new breakdown using a new analysis of localized information collected in 2018 by Colorado State University that found the oil and gas

industry releases four times more emissions than previously thought.

“That is a jaw-dropping number, and it’s staggering in terms of the implications for New Mexico’s climate mitigation opportunities,” said National Resources Defense Council Climate and Energy Program Director Noah Long at the same meeting. “It means that oil and gas sector emissions will need to be reduced at a much faster rate than earlier understood and it also means that every other sector in this state—whether it’s buildings, the electric generation sector or transportation and industry—will also have to increase or accelerate its decarbonization if we have any chance of meeting science-based targets.”

A profound conflict at the heart of the government compounds the issues. Oil and gas revenues account for nearly 40% of the state’s budget and fund countless critical services, including the public education system. The state’s heavy dependency on oil and gas money has for decades left legislators and governors alike reluctant to cross the industry.

On paper, a new proposed regulatory framework to curb methane emissions would go a long way toward addressing the problem, requiring the oil and gas industry to capture most of its methane emissions by 2026.

In reality, the combined impact of years of underfunding and disinvestment and the strain of COVID-19 has pushed the departments responsible for enforcing the new rules past their capacity to perform even the most basic regulatory functions.

New Mexico Environment Department Secretary James Kenney says new regulations would theoretically pay for themselves with fines and permitting fees, but his department needs legislative approval to raise fees or spend the money. The Legislature’s track record of failing to support the department’s other enforcement activities does not inspire optimism that the new rules will have the intended outcome after the 60-day lawmaking session that begins in January.

people as possible,” Kenney tells SFR in an interview.

“We have an oil-and gas-based economy. Issuing permits for wells but having no one to check on it is the same thing as asking someone to comply with the drinking water standard, but never testing for it. It’s the same thing as issuing a hazardous waste permit and then never going out to see if they’re in compliance,” Kenney says.

His frustration is palpable even over Zoom.

“That’s our history—that’s what I’m fighting against.”

LEAVING COAL IN THE DUST Moving away from coal toward renewables is a main focus of the Energy Transition Act. The state’s largest utility, Public Service Company of New Mexico, aka PNM, even promised to reach zero carbon generation earlier­—by 2040.

However, the question of which technology will replace abandoned coal plants in the meantime—and who will foot the bill—is still up for debate. New Mexico’s utilities are plunging ahead with plans to light up the state with cleaner energy.

Electricity here is largely generated by a collection of coal plants, gas plants and solar and wind farms located in the state, as well as a nuclear power plant in Arizona.

In addition to phasing out the coal-powered San Juan Generating Station by 2022 in accordance with state law, PNM recently announced its plans to ditch investments in coal at a second plant—the Four Corners Generating Station—by 2024. PNM’s shares in the plant represent 10% of its energy production and are the company’s last remaining investments in coal.

On Dec. 2, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission approved a solar and battery power replacement plan for San Juan, though the plant may stay in operation under different ownership for another decade. Private energy developer Enchant Energy joined the City of Farmington in a proposal to purchase the plant and retrofit it with carbon capture technology to reduce its emissions.

gument in a case regarding PNM’s investments at Palo Verde that appeared before the New Mexico Supreme Court in 2019.

The court ruled that ratepayers shouldn’t bear the full cost in that case.

According to Nanasi, the Energy Transition Act itself may prevent the PRC from being able to protect ratepayers for the utility’s unwise investments.

“We don’t believe that there needs to be a conflict between renewable energy and protecting poor people,” she tells SFR. Nanasi plans to ask the Legislature to once again amend the act in the upcoming

session to reinstate the PRC’s power to determine the extent to which ratepayers must shoulder the cost for shutting down dirty energy plants.

For its part, PNM plans to officially file for abandonment of both the Palo Verde and Four Corners generating stations in early next year.

THE METHANE PROBLEM If New Mexico has any hope of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions enough to meet the goals of the governor’s executive order, the state must tackle emissions from oil and gas production.

When it comes to replacing the power from Palo Verde and Four Corners, PNM is leaning heavily toward a mix of gas and renewables.

PNM spokesman Raymond Sandoval tells SFR he foresees the debate over using gas as a “bridging fuel” will most likely occupy much of the public conversation about the energy transition in 2021.

Sandoval says the utility wants to invest in high-tech gas engines that would provide reliability and cost savings in the short term, and could potentially be converted to run on hydrogen in the future.

“It is not your grandfather’s gas…We are not using gas to light a flame, to boil water and turn a turbine—these literally are jet engines,” he says, explaining that the gas engines would turn on at peak hours or on overcast windless days when wind and solar farms can’t provide enough energy to meet demand.

Yet, according to a series of articles by S&P Global about the overproduction of gas plants across the country, many utilities are far overestimating how much energy it will take to maintain grid reliability. They continue to build excess gas capacity despite the fact that one in seven gas plants built in the last two decades are rarely used.

Based on that author’s analysis of projections from the US Energy Information Administration, at the current rate of gas plant construction, natural gas could be the dominant source of energy production by mid-century and the country’s CO2 emissions would remain at equivalent levels to where they are today.

Meanwhile, Mariel Nanasi, director of the Santa Fe-based ratepayer advocacy group New Energy Economy, tells SFR ratepayers should not be forced to pay for PNM’s abandonment of the Four Corners Generating Station because, she says, its original investment in the plant was found imprudent. Most of the industry’s emissions are in the form of methane plumes that hang above the Permian and San Juan basins and cause respiratory issues and asthma.

“There is a significant ozone problem in the state of New Mexico where people who live in these areas should not have compromised public health based on us being 110% of the national ozone standard—which is kind of where we are,” Environment Secretary Kenney told the Legislative Finance Committee on Dec. 3.

The state Environment and Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources departments are developing regulatory frameworks for methane leaks and ozone levels.

Both agencies released drafts of their proposals earlier this year, and will begin a formal public rulemaking process to assess the final versions early next year.

The proposed rules provide big targets for cutting emissions from the oil and gas industry, including a requirement that oil and gas producers reach a 98% gas capture target by the end of 2026 in the Permian and San Juan basins.

But officials admit significant hurdles to enforcement.

The rules proposed by the environment department would regulate ozone, and therefore methane, through its Air Quality Bureau. This bureau is entirely funded by the permitting fees and fines it collects from polluters, which means that, in theory, new regulations would pay for themselves. However, Kenney tells SFR, he still needs legislative approval to increase the amount of money he spends on staffing and other needs of the bureau—and right now, the funds he has are stretched too thin.

“We are now down to two air inspectors for the entire state of New Mexico for everything that we regulate,” Kenney told legislators at an interim Water and Natural Resources Committee meeting Nov. 9.

shortages goes far beyond the oil and gas industry. According to a report by the Environmental Council of the States, New Mexico’s environment department has experienced a greater decline in its budget since 2016 than the majority of other states, and the shortfall impacts every responsibility the department has.

“I believe that New Mexicans, as well as the Legislature, really haven’t had a chance to see behind the curtain and understand what impact at least 10 years of a budget decline…has had on both staffing and our ability to implement the programs that the Legislature, the EPA, the Department of Labor and other agencies have given us the authority to do,” Kenney tells SFR over Zoom.

NMED has recently fallen so short on funding that it stopped testing drinking water for contaminants such as excess chlorine and asbestos. In addition to regulating air and water quality, the department is also responsible for workplace inspections, but barely has enough OSHA inspectors to keep up with the demands of COVID-19, he said.

“COVID has stressed and strained the existing resources that were already stressed and strained,” Kenney says.

While the state provided the department with emergency funds to hire 28 temporary workers to handle COVID-19 rapid responses, Kenney says, New Mexico only has eight fully trained OSHA inspectors who are qualified to investigate occupational injuries and deaths.

The inspectors have been so preoccupied responding to the pandemic that there are non-virus related cases going unaddressed. Oregon, which has twice the population of New Mexico, has almost 10 times as many investigators.

Kenney says the department doesn’t even have enough funds to take full advantage of federal grant matching opportunities.

“I’m a New Mexican, I’m a bit outraged that that money is sitting, waiting to be used simply because I don’t have the ability to match it,” says Kenney.

Last year, the Legislature poured $5 million into technologies such as those being developed by Santa Fe-based Descartes Labs that would make it easier to detect natural gas leaks, but have seemed hesitant to put pressure on the industry.

That might start to change this year as lawmakers try to diversify the state’s economy to better withstand the boom and bust cycles of the oil industry that have taken a serious toll in the last year. If captured, the natural gas currently polluting the atmosphere could provide a valuable source of additional revenue.

for energy production as we build out the grid, as we find new ways for infrastructure to evolve, as we find new ways to diversify the economy.”

When it comes to the state’s role as an energy exporter, New Mexico has untapped resources besides fossil fuels.

Diversification efforts could go toward making New Mexico a regional exporter of clean energy from renewable sources.

The oil-producing regions of southern New Mexico also happen to be among the sunniest and windiest. Rather than seeing renewable energy as a threat, some local governments are beginning to see it as an additional opportunity to capitalize on what the area has to offer.

Oil-rich Lea County is one.

“As we all know, Lea County is and has traditionally been focused on oil and gas,” said Missi Currier, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Lea County, at a recent webinar hosted

by ReNew New Mexico. “But we’re also very excited about the opportunity to continue to bring in other opportunities

New Mexico is the most competitive marketplace for building renewable energy facilities in the West,” she says, citing a recent study by the University of Wyoming.

“In order for us to really capitalize on this big opportunity to build projects, we need to maintain that competitive advantage.”

To achieve that vision, Seguin says, the state should modernize the grid and build the transmission infrastructure to transport energy through New Mexico and out across the nation.

Coming up with a grid modernization plan will be one of the items at the top of the list for the New Mexico Energy, Mining and Minerals Department in 2021, Cabinet Secretary Sarah Probst told an interim legislative committee in November. The department will host a public meeting about its plan on Dec. 17.

The Western Spirit Transmission Line is a massive renewable energy transmission project already underway in central New Mexico. The project expects to complete the final permitting steps in 2021 to allow construction to begin in 2022 with

an anticipated operation to begin the next year. Backers estimate it will bring over $1.5 billion in new investments in renewable generation and transmission and involves building new transmission lines across 520 miles through the desert in Arizona and New Mexico.

Earlier this fall, PNM announced an anticipated merger with multinational corporate energy giant Avangrid, based in Spain. According to Seguin, this also indicates that New Mexico is about to step up its renewable energy game. Avangrid Renewables already started construction on a 306-megawatt wind project in the state this year.

Sandoval, the PNM spokesman, says that while the merger shouldn’t have any noticeable impact on customers, it will allow the utility to leverage the full financing might of the larger corporation to invest in more large-scale renewable projects. Avangrid is known for its renewable energy portfolio and innovation in Europe and elsewhere.

New Mexico faces an alarming future if the state does not immediately and drastically reduce its emissions from the oil and gas industry, and an opportunity-rich window to realize the full potential of the wind and sun.

In the short term, at least, says Ben Kelahan, founder of ReNew Mexico, a coalition that promotes renewable energy as an economic driver in the state, via webinar, fossil fuels and renewables could play complementary rather than antagonistic roles in making “the pie bigger for all New Mexicans.”

My Autobiography of Carson McCullers

By Jenn Shapland Tin House Books, 2020 An annoying amount of introspection seems to be a side effect of quarantine. If you’re lucky enough, or stupid enough, to live by yourself, you know the struggle. So, to escape the lockdown-induced hamster wheel of self-reflexive thoughts in my head—and for a break from reading Nextdoor threads with titles like “UNFATHOMABLE NOISE” that make me wonder about the relative mental health of my neighbors—I went on a memoir tear this month.

“Memoir is peeking into the windows of your own life,” writes Santa Fe resident Jenn Shapland about the art of self-examination. I like to read them for the thrill of peeking at others peeking at themselves.

Shapland’s My Autobiography of Carson McCullers is even more meta than that.

This hybrid biography-memoir begins with Shapland recounting her realization after stumbling across a sexy letter to the author from another woman, that McCullers (1917-1967) was queer. So is Shapland.

Shapland begins to envision writing a book about McCullers, the Southern Gothic novelist who wrote The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and other poignant, twisted tales of alienated or outcast individuals.

But like any reader who finds a kinship with a writer, Shapland can’t quite resist

fitting herself into the narrative of Carson, as she familiarly calls her.

While living in McCullers’ old house in Columbus, Georgia, and researching her lesbian relationships, Shapland becomes her own self-voyeur, investigating the complexities of her sexuality as well as that of McCullers. The result is an intensely personal ­account of McCullers’ secrets mingled with Shapland’s­ own—a book that probes both subjects’ identities as queer woman writers.

My Autobiography of Carson McCullers was shortlisted for a National Book Award in nonfiction, and it’s no wonder. I’ve never read a biography that so boldly inserts the author into her subject; equally, I’ve never read an autobiography so obsessed with a life other than the author’s own.

“Who can tell the story of her own life?”

Shapland asks, given McCullers’ unfinished memoirs. She wonders why, exactly, she needs to find out whether or not McCullers slept with women. In the end, she writes, “I think I know what I wanted, though, from Carson: recognition. A rendering of my own becoming. A love story I could believe.”

Leary. When I read the obituary of Harcourt-Smith, a longtime Santa Fean who died in October at age 74, I thought something familiar to all regular readers of obits: “Wow, she lived here?”

Harcourt-Smith was a 26-year-old European wild child when she met 52-year-old Timothy Leary in 1972. The LSD guru was on the run from American authorities in Switzerland after having escaped prison in California, and HarcourtSmith happened to be a sexually voracious socialite who loved drugs and outlaws.

“Our love is the Perfect Love,” Leary whispered in her ear the morning after they met and tripped on Clear Light acid together. “I was going to star in a film about Hesse’s book Steppenwolf, but I would much rather live the story with you.”

In Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story, Harcourt-Smith’s rollicking, disjointed 2013 self-published memoir, she details a five-year love affair that took the couple from Vienna to Beirut to Kabul to San Francisco to Santa Fe. The relationship withstood Leary’s capture in Afghanistan and subsequent tenure at Folsom Prison (he was placed in a cell next to Charles Manson). After HarcourtSmith and Leary became FBI informants in order to secure his release, HarcourtSmith was vilified by the counterculture.

Many saw her as a modern-day Mata Hari who had orchestrated Leary’s arrest and defection. Poet Allen Ginsberg called her “a CIA sex provocateur.”

An eerily timed documentary based on her memoir aired on Showtime a few weeks ago. It’s a detailed 102-minute plunge into the bizarre tale of Joanna and Timothy, and it may thoroughly sate your appetite for psychedelic intrigue—or, if you’re anything like me, compel you to pick up Harcourt-Smith’s book. Directed

by Errol Morris and called My Psychedelic Love Story, it trades on Morris’ obsession with narrative slippage and conspiracy theories, subjects he has explored in films from The Thin Blue Line to Wormwood.

Harcourt-Smith is the dazzling focus, telling the filmmaker her sepia-toned ’70s stories from a well-appointed midcentury modern living room.

Morris’ psychedelic graphics and probing questions are a good match for Harcourt-Smith’s wry bons mots. “You can never tell how rich rich people are,” the once-spoiled, now-enlightened heiress tells the camera. It’s a statement as wise as her observation that her fellow It Girl Anita Pallenberg “almost singlehandedly invented the Rolling Stones.” In recalling her overwhelming love for Leary, Harcourt-Smith smiles with her entire face. Her charm and wit are irresistible even in her twilight years. But even she isn’t sure if she was a double agent or not, and both the memoir and documentary are inquiries into the integrity of her love.

Harcourt-Smith says before Leary’s capture, the two “tripped and traveled” in Europe and the Middle East for 49 days, the amount of time Tibetan Buddhists designate as the bardo between life and death. In that way, she writes, they lived “a life between lifetimes.” That sort of contraction and expansion of time is something to ponder as we go into 2021 with 10 months in quarantine under our belts— lives lived between lifetimes, indeed.

Theater in the Digital Sphere Teatro Paraguas partners with local company Xerb to stream online content

treaming fatigue has become very real, friends. Yes—folks who work in the arts have taken a major hit during the pandemic along with pretty much any other non-Amazon business you can think of, but there are only so many times we can tune in to a musician playing covers in their living room before we start coming up with excuses to skip one. My personal favorite?

“Oh, uh, I have to go. I cut my foot before…and my shoe is filling up with blood.”

It snowballs from there, but not to be outgunned by one of the most diabolical health concerns of our lifetime, local folks are working out ways to maximize our time spent streaming while upping their own content games and working

within the new world order. In this case, Midtown theater Teatro Paraguas has entered into a partnership with local streaming service Xerb.

SFR first told you about the service (xerb.tv) and its hopes to become a viable non-corporate alternative to titans like Netflix and Hulu in November of last year (Netflix on Blast, Nov. 26, 2019), and Xerb has since grown to include ­offerings from film festivals, food-based programming, kid’s stuff, classic cinema and lots more. Unlike the mainstream services, however, Xerb’s content comes a la carte—as in, you choose which channels to which you’d like to subscribe, and you can mix and match how you see fit.

Each carries its own monthly cost (most run aound $3-$6), but until now, theater has been a missing component according to Xerb’s Director of Marketing Alex Streeper (she’s married to company founder Eric Streeper, btw).

“I’m also on the board at Teatro Paraguas, and I’ve been in a couple plays,” Streeper tells SFR, “but I’m no big actress—I’m just a big supporter, so we wanted to start reaching out to more

local organizations, we wanted to expand, we wanted to help theater, and we thought it would be really cool to have our first theater be local.”

According to Streeper’s fellow Paraguas board member Paola Vengoechea Martini, the partnership felt like an obvious choice. The theater creates content with almost shocking regularity, pandemic or no (think plays, poetry, holiday celebrations, talkback sessions, outside renters like the Julesworks Follies variety show and collaborations with other local theaters), and has joined the pandemic-spurred streaming revolution with Zoom-based plays like Love in the DMZ—an emotional two-person show centering on love letters between a soldier in Vietnam and his wife back home. Why not offer that content to subscribers who miss the theater but are stuck in lockdown?

“With the productions we’re putting on [through Zoom] right now, we’ve been recording them so we can put them up on Xerb,” Vengoechea Martini says. “We also have archival footage and a few other pieces from the past. We want to have content that’s accessible to all, and the reach has certainly expanded beyond the greater Santa Fe area.”

Vengoechea Martini says that even if the pandemic ended tomorrow and restrictions on gathering lifted along with it, Teatro Paraguas would continue the part-

nership with Xerb. Additionally, even live productions and events are being taped right now for inclusion on the platform.

Up next, the theater’s annual Christmas show, A Musical Piñata for Christmas, which hits its eighth year in 2020.

“It’s like a fun little romp,” says Alix Hudson, Paraguas company member and the show’s writer for the sixth year running. “We’ve got 20 cast members ranging in age, I think, 60 years between the oldest and youngest, and it’s sort of a meta family piece about a big, sprawling family that normally gets together during the holidays but has to do it on Zoom. The idea is that your best might not be as good as you want it to be right now, and that’s OK.” A Musical Piñata for Christmas will be broadcast live over Zoom, recorded, and posted on Xerb shortly after.

“The nuances of interacting virtually are…we have an advantage, because I wrote this very specifically for Zoom, and I think we’ve had some other really creative approaches,” Hudson explains.

“Learning all the different ways Xerb can be used as a medium—it’s kind of theater, but not; it’s kind of film, but not—we would definitely continue with Xerb.”

Hudson says at its heart, the partnership opens doors for accessibility as well as storytelling. She says Teatro Paraguas brass is already talking about experiments in multi-platform hybrid performances, and that applying for grants could even be easier with all of its content available in one place.

“Also,” Streeper adds, “sometimes you just want to sit on your couch or press pause, make dinner and come back. A lot of people like that flexibility, and we’re hoping Teatro Paraguas can expand its reach.”

Sound of Metal might trick one into thinking it’s a deep dive into heavy metal. Don’t worry, though, metal skeptics—10 minutes in and you can start turning up your television without worry.

Drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed of Nightcrawler) tours the country with his ­singer-girlfriend Lou (Ready Player One’s Olivia Cooke). He trades a life of drug addiction for a life of metal drumming, but at not-even-30, Ruben’s hearing diminishes to near-deafness.

Unsure how to communicate with the world, he finds a community run by a deaf-advocate named Joe (Paul Raci) who tries to guide Ruben not only to accept what he’s lost, but also to find gains. Easier said than done, however.

Director Darius Marder’s first feature is a European-styled, patiently told story portrayed through Ahmed’s expressions of mental anguish and featuring some of the most noteworthy sound design in recent years. Often overlooked, sound is easy to note when it’s bad, but when was the last time your stream ended or you left the theater and you thought “Wow, what a great mix?” Sound of Metal takes that oft-overlooked element and creates a work of

There are two types of Hollywood-on-Hollywood stories.

The first celebrates the glitzy mirage of Hollywood success, and the second chastises it for being a commercial industry. As director David Fincher (The Social Network, Gone Girl) usually does, this one goes for the kill. Mank is for the cinephiles, for brooding graduate students smoking behind the building asking if you’ve seen Kurosawa.

Following screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, this odyssey examining Citizen Kane’s writing comes out longer than the actual Citizen Kane. Most of it is Gary Oldman as Mankiewicz being drunk or wanting to be drunk.

That’s more fun than it sounds. His interactions and moral questioning around the old MGM world of William Randolph Hurst (Charles Dance of Game of Thrones), “rosebud” Marion Davis (Amanda Seyfried of Mamma Mia!) and studio head Louis B Mayer (Moneyball’s Arliss Howard) frame the artistic questions that build the film.

SELF-INTERESTED; OLDMAN LIVES UP TO + HIS NAME

The eternal question of art vs. commerce is the foundation. Mankiewicz knows 1930s Hollywood is merely pumping out propaganda for conservative (and financial) interests, so his leftist beliefs bring him to drink. His self-destruction brings his greatest work. Still, the world Mank inhabits is far more interesting than the man himself; Fincher notes his important contributions, but as any writer knows, the path to creativity is often paved with brooding and alcohol.

Fincher styles his opus as if it were out of the ’30s. Well, sort of: The characters answer in smart one-liners with Sorkin-esque speed, and while the black and white glossy look is any film fanatic’s dream, it’s still confounding to consider why it was shot in a wide aspect ratio (2.20:1) rather than the standard Academy Ratio (1.375:1) of the time. It’s a nitpick, sure, but the wider aspect ratio doesn’t translate well to online streaming. Rather

art, as noteworthy as cinematography or visual effects. We’re dropped both in Ruben’s decaying hearing while also being reminded of of the world around us every day, a sense we often give little thought.

It helps, too, there’s a commitment to avoid classic stereotypes. People with disabilities can often be presented as angelic figures with a Buddhist view of living. Rather, Sound of Metal highlights the complexities within that community, to note the good and bad, and whether we ought to accept jarring change or to fight like hell for a chance at normalcy.

Whether or not Sound of Metal is truly about processing of loss or is a spiritual journey, the audience can figure out on their own. Ahmed’s performance justifies the time spent, and an award-worthy sound design makes Sound of Metal truly one of the bravest releases of the year, if for its ideas alone. (RG)

than knowing the subject instantly, for example, the viewer often has to search the frame.

Mank is a project of love from Fincher (his own father wrote the screenplay), but a film that might not work for you unless you’re familiar with Citizen Kane and its history before going in. Interesting but exclusionary, Mank is notable for the performances and less notable for its cluttered screenplay. Nothing is earth-shattering, and amid Fincher’s passion the question remains: Is the development of Citizen Kane really that interesting of a story?

my life!” And you’ll find that even when they don’t necessarily delve into the purer forms of the genre themselves, its tenets—community, political outrage, freedom and so on—work their way into the music somehow. That’s at least the story for The Pogues and their illustrious leader/notorious drinker Shane MacGowan.

In Crock of Gold, from Glastonbury director Julien Temple, we get the whole story, and I mean whole story on MacGowan, from his earliest days on a farm upon the Emerald Isle itself to his teenage move to London during a time of major IRA upheaval and eventual quest to both preserve and evolve traditional Irish music.

It’d be easy to laugh off MacGowan for those who don’t know—the man loves a drink, is famously missing all kinds of teeth and seems to struggle with simple speech—but as Temple digs deeper into where the man was during the rise of punk, how he merged patriotic Irish pride with his love affair with the then-burgeoning 1970s punk explosion and what that means for music even today, we learn Irish sounds had been in danger of disappearing altogether outside of the tiny pubs and communal rooms and the niche listeners (with respect to The Chieftains).

Instead, Pogues bandmates like Spider Stacy and James Fearnley brought the tin

whistle and accordion to the punk world.

MacGowan’s lyrics wound up like a sort of dark and shockingly open form of political poetry (though he says in the film that he hates to be described as a poet as it makes him feel like the music didn’t matter as much to anyone).

Whether or not most folks know it, in fact, The Pogues impacted modern, punk and mainstream music in a way that might not have made them household names to most, but catapulted them into the pantheon of music scholars, punk hooligans and the keepers of cool culture.

Temple does wonders at showcasing MacGowan’s contributions to music without shying away from his issues with drugs, booze, anger and family. Animated sequences add enjoyable weirdness and an extra layer of artistry. It’s sad, though, that producer and longtime MacGowan confidant Johnny Depp felt the need to insert himself in the movie for whatever reason, but it is fun to see Shane stick it to him about the Pirates movie franchise.

Depp notwithstanding, Crock of Gold ought to wow the Pogues fans, win a few new fans and maybe even earn MacGowan a little more respect outside the UK. He deserves it and more. (Alex De Vore)
