I am so glad those people at [Embudo Valley Organics] no longer raise birds for slaughter (don’t see how people are able to do a good job at that and still sleep at night). They must be so cute when they are young, like all babies are.

Finding Resilience

N

ew Mexico reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases on Oct. 30. Tommy Archuleta was one of them.

A licensed mental health counselor, as well as a licensed drug and alcohol counselor who works for the New Mexico Corrections Department at the state Penitentiary, Archuleta was receiving daily screenings and COVID-19 tests every other week through his job. By the time he received his results for his most recent test, he had been sick at home for five days.

His symptoms began with a “really” sore throat. Soon, he was bedridden with fatigue, chills and incessant headache.

“The flu symptoms look a lot like COVID symptoms, so I didn’t know if I had the flu or COVID, but I was able to weather the harshest symptoms,” he says. But when dizziness set in, having by then received a positive diagnosis, he became concerned and called an ambulance to Presbyterian Medical Center in Santa Fe where he was tested again—this time rapidly.

“I just wanted to get care,” Archuleta says, “because once I realized it was COVID, then I could start the process of trying to find out what severity level I was experiencing and what I was looking at.”

at Presbyterian Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho and he was transported there Halloween evening.

Archuleta, 55, says he has no pre-existing conditions and keeps in good shape as a mountain biker but, as a former smoker, knew he could still be at risk. He was reassured at the Rio Rancho hospital, however, that he had a “far less severe strain than the other people on that unit that I was on.” On that unit, he says, “there were people definitely on ventilators and fighting for their lives.” Archuleta received a liter of oxygen in the evening, responded well and was released on Nov. 2.

Archuleta knew he was at risk for contracting COVID-19 given his work as a counselor in the state prison system, where close quarters have led to outbreaks at facilities across the state; he had been teaching a psycho-educational class to approximately 20 inmates before he fell ill. The Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe currently reports 77 inmate cases and Corrections Department spokesman Eric Harrison says that facility to date has had 52 staff members who tested positive, which includes corrections offices, staff, contractors, educators and administrators. Of those, he says, 47 remain positive and five have recovered.

Fortunately, Archuleta is on the mend.

He was sent home with a 10-day course of the steroid treatment dexamethasone and has also been using the breath work he already practices with clients, along with yoga, to remain focused.

“There’s a hyper vigilance that comes in with trauma,” Archuleta says. “I don’t know how traumatized I’ve been, but I’ve certainly been awakened.”

Part of that awakening is the recognition that Archuleta likely transmitted COVID-19 to his 87-year-old father with

whom he lives in Cochiti Lake. As soon as he knew he was sick, he became concerned his father also had contracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

He had, in fact, also called an ambulance for his father on Halloween night, which took him to Bernalillo County. His father was released that evening, though, as he was not yet exhibiting symptoms.

After Archuleta returned home on Nov. 2, he began to monitor both his and his father’s oxygen levels. He could already see, he said, his father’s condition changing and, by Nov. 4, his father also had chills and a fever. He was then admitted into Presbyterian Medical in Albuquerque, where he would remain for approximately a week, receiving the antiviral medication Remdesivir, plasma and other treatments.

When SFR spoke with Archuleta on Nov. 11, he was preparing for the hospital to send his father home, where Archuleta will now take care of him—with the help of home healthcare aides. Archuleta plans to return to work himself when he’s fully recovered. He knows he will need the help.

While Archuleta doesn’t know what his father’s recovery will look like, he’s not unprepared for what comes next.

“I don’t have a big family,” he says.

“When my mom died in ‘13, I was already in place helping him with her care, and so ushering her out. And when it was just him and I, it seemed clear that my next job was to usher him out in dignity and in honor.

And so, when this hit me, and I saw that it was hitting him, there’s a certain acceptance that you just sort of roll into. I think that’s what resilience guides us toward; acceptance doesn’t mean agreement—you just kind of find yourself finding stores of strength and resilience to continue on.

That’s what life is about: accepting the change, not necessarily agreeing with it.”

In keeping with his background as a counselor, Archuleta says he would like to see and participate in some type of online forum for COVID-19 survivors, “where we could come together and share our strength,” he said, noting the need for connection during such an isolating time.

As he discusses the need for resilience, Archuleta references the word “trudge.”

In contemporary usage, he notes, “It’s lost some of its meaning, but its oldest and more stalwart meaning is that you walk with purpose.”

Archuleta’s musing on the word trudge follows suit from his other endeavor as an accomplished poet. He’s currently finishing a manuscript titled Susto, which is Spanish for fright. One piece from the collection, “Remedio : Ocotillo (Candlewood)” was featured by the Academy of American Poets in its Poema-Day series last March (poets.org/poem/ remedio-ocotillo-candlewood), and his work has been published by numerous other prestigious literary outlets.

“It’s been born from grief from the loss of my mother,” Archuleta says of the manuscript, “but it started to take on a lot of different meaning when COVID hit; it cast a completely different light on the work. I mean, COVID has changed everything.”

A month and change have passed since Indigenous Peoples Day protesters yanked down the so-called “Soldiers Monument”—known more readily as the obelisk—and Santa Fe feels perhaps more fractured than ever along lines of reconciling the city’s history of settler-colonialism.

The local political and arts establishment have ample criticism for how Mayor Alan Webber and his police department have handled the obelisk destruction and its aftermath, whether they believe the administration’s touch has been too soft or too stiff.

Indigenous activists say there’s a slim chance to start healing generations of oppression, embodied by the 150-year-old obelisk, but that the city must exchange continued dawdling for bold, swift action.

The City Council had planned this week to discuss Webber’s long promised answer: a Cultures, Histories, Art, Reconciliation and Truth committee—known, risible as the acronym is, as CHART. As of presstime, the matter had been tentatively bumped to the Dec. 9 agenda.

Its proposed mission includes determining what to do with other controversial monuments and creating new public art for the Plaza, as well as attempting to suture the city’s wounds by convening “listening sessions.” Even the committee’s composition has spurred hours of debate.

Yet councilors are also freshly aware of the consequences of taking too long in the process.

Public opinion about the obelisk varies greatly, though many Santa Feans agree that Webber could have done more to prevent a group of people from tearing it down Oct. 12.

The mayor’s failure to act swiftly on promises he made in June—an extension, really, of a vow from the previous administration made in 2017—to create a committee and start talking about removal of monuments, the city’s botched attempt at a community art project to adorn the plywood box constructed around the obelisk, and the administration’s perceived disinterest in communicating openly about it has left many people frustrated.

Webber acknowledged this sentiment at a media briefing on Monday, but said he was not convinced earlier action would have stopped the destruction.

“I don’t know if we can say with any certainty that if we’d appointed a committee over the summer that the people who toppled it on Indigenous People’s Day would have been forestalled,” he said.

The CHART committee will need public buy-in.

For Councilor Mike Garcia, the biggest issue is making sure the city’s diverse factions perceive the final committee as legitimate. At a Quality of Life Committee meeting earlier this month, he worried that lack of Native representation on the City Council could lead to bias from the start, adding that the governing body had already “lost all credibility” in the eyes of the public.

Garcia later proposed an amendment aimed at independence in CHART committee selection. His concerns are valid.

Take the similar, but opposite reactions from an Indigenous activist and one of the city’s Hispanic leaders to how Santa Fe officials are going about the work ahead.

Elena Ortiz of The Red Nation says she’s felt sadness, mostly, since the obelisk came down. The city’s mood and dialogue have exposed deeper problems, she says.

“Santa Fe, with its pseudo-liberal, left-leaning politics, thinks it’s somehow above racial tensions that have gripped the nation this year, Ortiz tells SFR. “But when you look at the vitriol that has come out since the obelisk, we’re peeling back this onion and we’re showing the racism that is endemic in Santa Fe. And we’re showing that, hey, Donald Trump doesn’t have anything on Santa Fe and this racism is so systemic.”

Former City Councilor Ron Trujillo says it’s about representation, too, when it comes to Santa Fe’s path forward.

“In my opinion, the mayor only heard one side of the story,” Trjujillo says. He

ran against Webber in the race for mayor and tells SFR he is not aware of Webber contacting some of Santa Fe’s oldest Hispanic cultural organizations to discuss CHART or other plans.

“He’s got to make sure that all voices are heard, that all people, all parties that have a stake in this are brought to the table,” Trujillo continues, “If he just stacks it with only the people that he wants to hear from…what’s the use of putting it together?”

It’s not just Webber’s political rivals who have concerns about the makeup of the CHART committee or who felt frustrated after the destruction of the obelisk because they felt they had not been heard.

At an Art Commission meeting in October, commissioners said they had sent the mayor a long list of concerns and recommendations about how to proceed with the obelisk in August, and never received a response. They also worried that the Art Commission might not have enough involvement in the new CHART committee process.

Concerns about who would be on the CHART committee were echoed in public comments.

“This really has to be led by people of Santa Fe, from Santa Fe, the complex conversation you’re all having is the same conversation we have to have as a town,” said Chris Jonas, director of Littleglobe, a local community art organization that has engaged in oral history projects such as ¡Presente! Stories of Belonging and Displacement in Santa Fe. “One of the biggest dangers I believe is that if this is led by a political initiative it will stay within the political realm and that people will speak from a strategic perspective rather than from a heartfelt town perspective,” he says.

Some Hispanics, says Abeyta, feel as though the decision to end these traditions was made by outsiders at a time when locals are quickly losing ground in the capital. Over the last 50 years, many Hispanic families have been priced out of downtown historic neighborhoods where their relatives had lived for generations.

From this perspective, the debate about the obelisk is not just about historical wrongs, but also about present-day gentrification—or as Abeyta puts it, the process of “unbelonging.”

Yet Corrine Sanchez, executive director of Tewa Women United and resident of San Ildefonso Pueblo, tells SFR that monuments to an unshared past do nothing but further divisions in the city.

“It is time to reconcile the violent past of this state and country and embrace healing and story-sharing that does not glorify such tactics, attitudes and behaviors,” Sanchez says. “We can correct historical mistruths but we cannot change the reality that peoples died because they were not seen as human, as equal, as worthy. We, here now, have the ability to learn from these mistakes.”

Part of moving ahead will be up to CHART, which, with varying perspectives, everyone interviewed for this story supports.

Councilor Jamie Cassutt Sanchez takes a broader view, saying she believes a “restorative justice approach” may be best.

The term is most commonly used in reference to a method of addressing the impacts of crime by requiring offenders to take responsibility and find resolution with affected victims and communities.

However, Cassutt Sanchez says the process has also been successfully used to address cultural conflicts between different groups elsewhere. “I wouldn’t say that there’s any process that I thought was perfect…I think that there are components from each that are lessons we can learn,” she says. “But at the same time, our situation is different and we need to look at what is unique to Santa Fe. I think that the [restorative justice] model really strikes a chord with this idea that it’s not just about compromise, it’s not just about coming up with solutions, but it is part of healing.”

St. Augustine is a curious analogue for Santa Fe, being situated in Northern Florida and associated with the kinds of visceral, horrifying images that marked the Civil Rights Era. But the city of about 15,000 people—roughly 10% of Santa Fe’s population—demonstrated how to avoid the massive tumult the City Different finds itself in now over monuments to the past that leave non-white communities with modern day reminders of systemic racism.

St. Augustine’s memorial, obelisk-shaped like Santa Fe’s, stood for hundreds of years. Recently, as in Santa Fe, tensions over its existence and symbolism boiled over. But in very different ways.

The marker was dedicated to Confederate soldiers, creating considerable pain among the Black and activist community for decades. To them, it glorified people who defended slavery and killed for its continuation.

Monument opponents took a sustained, systematic approach to protest that included open communication with city officials and law enforcement. Over three years of consistent protests, no violent arrests or destruction of property occurred in the Florida city, founded in 1565 by the Spanish, making it the oldest city in the country. (Santa Fe is considered the oldest capital city.)

In August 2017, prominent Florida activist Reverend Ron Rawls began inviting people to City Commission meetings, trying to get someone to listen to the Black community’s pleas to remove the memorial from the central plaza, a major tourist attraction.

Their attempts at dialogue failed.

“What we said we would do is we would begin to have protests that would affect the economy, and the economy in St. Augustine is mainly tourism,” Rawls tells SFR. Protests proliferated in and around the plaza. The point: to make the most popular spot in northeastern Florida “unpleasant,” according to Rawls, especially during the Fourth of July and other famous holiday events. And unpleasantness caused by peaceful civil unrest finally worked.

In June 2020, after nearly three years, a split City Commission, led by a new mayor, voted to move the object.

Two months later, the city paid $344,824 to a private contractor, which

bile gallery, says he believes the mayor’s silence on the issue was really his biggest downfall.

“That was, I think, a big failure that led to people feeling like they had been misled or lied to—though I don’t think that was the mayor’s intention,” he says.

This impression was furthered by the “community art” the city put up on the plywood box surrounding the obelisk this summer.

The project, advertised as a way for Santa Feans to start the dialogue and spread messages of unity, turned into a few poems handwritten in pen or Sharpie, and drawings by children.

Chase-Daniel, who was recruited to help applicants wheat paste their artworks to the box, says he believes the project failed because it did not seem to invite art reflecting the genuine mood of the moment’s hard truths or disagreements.

For his part, Councilor Roman “Tiger” Abeyta is concerned that the diversity of the CHART committee doesn’t just represent diverse cultures, but diverse ages as well.

One of his proposed amendments would add a member or person nominated by the mayor’s youth advisory board.

Abeyta, who has worked for years as chief professional officer at Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Fe, says he’s been talking with his own kids and the youth he works with about the issue, and their perspectives have surprised him.

“Our children are growing up in a much more diverse community than we did,” he says, “They are much more open minded than we were as kids. Each generation has a different perspective, and they need to be heard too.”

He says the youth he works with are much more likely than their parents to agree that offensive statues and monuments should be torn down.

But Abeyta also points to concerns that precede the obelisk destruction and are likely to extend beyond the work of CHART. He comes from a long line of Hispanic New Mexicans with varying understandings of ethnicity and race. His grandparents were insistent upon their Spanish heritage due to the pressures of early statehood in a country where people of non-European lineage occupied a lower social status. His father, on the other hand, identified more as Chicano, which he defined as mixed Spanish and Indigenous blood.

Abeyta believes in his own generation, the attachment that many Hispanics in Santa Fe feel to the obelisk has to do with nostalgia for the city they grew up in and a sense of erasure.

“They do their little Klan rallies and whatever they do out there in front of the monument,” Rawls says. “I think it’s good for everybody now.”

A quick response once the city commission held a vote to move the memorial, as well as a lack of arrests or destruction of property, highlights several marked differences between the two oldest cities. Here, the obelisk was torn down by protesters—but only after more than seven months passed after Mayor Alan Webber made a hollow vow to remove it and years after former Mayor Javier Gonzales told constituents the city would take a comprehensive look at the monuments and memorials in Santa Fe, and never did. Seven people and counting have been arrested for alleged roles in the destruction of the marker.

Rawls says three years of protesting and holding up a mirror to city leaders about what the monument signified to Black people finally led to real change.

“You have people that did horrendous things and their descendants want to rewrite the narrative and make it appear that these people are heroes and these are people that are to be honored,” Rawls says. “I think the mayor of New Orleans once said that ‘They were definitely soldiers, but they were not heroes’…You don’t honor those people with a monument on public property…when you look at the truth of it, those people don’t deserve to be honored.”

September, 2017: Protests against the portrayal of the “peaceful reconquest” in the Fiesta Entrada lead to the highly publicized arrest of Jennifer Marley, clad in a traditional Pueblo dress. A “free speech zone” tries to confine a protest organized by The Red Nation.

ong before the obelisk stones hit the ground, the Santa Fe Police Department was bound for the spotlight.

By now, it’s well enough known: SFPD chased off people a night earlier who had chained themselves in protest. Then officers clashed briefly on Oct. 12 with people railing against a stone spike jutting up from the Santa Fe Plaza that, depending on who you ask, represents the Union victory in the Civil War and Hispanic heritage in the city, or stood for 150 years as a racist celebration of slaughtered Indigenous people and stolen land.

In short order on Indigenous Peoples Day, two people were in handcuffs, police higher-ups had issued an abrupt standdown order, officers beat a path off the Plaza, and then protesters toppled the obelisk.

In the month since, Mayor Alan Webber and his police chief, Andrew Padilla, have defended their decision to place “human life over property,” announced a citywide manhunt for anyone involved in the destruction, charged five more people and taken criticism from all corners.

Indigenous Peoples Day protesters say the cops were too heavy handed. Hispanic groups and even some city councilors say they didn’t do enough to protect the historic monument. And the city insists it acted in everyone’s interest.

Padilla has not indicated whether a minimal police presence marks a new philosophy for SFPD—Oct. 12 was quite a

protest on Indigenous Peoples Day, but the work had been delayed.

So, the city spread out mobile metal fencing in a circle around the obelisk in an attempt to keep people back.

At first, it looked like a typical Plaza protest, with just eight officers mingling along the metal barrier. But the city’s strategies failed, and the day quickly devolved into, for the most part, chaos.

Trouble started when several protesters laid down on wood pilings the city workers were trying to erect around the obelisk, the videos show. Police officers tried to pull them up by the arms, to no avail.

Then, Ryan Witt, one of the seven people currently charged in the incident, picked up a piece of metal fencing and threw it at the obelisk.

An officer attempted to arrest him. But several people grabbed onto Witt’s arms and legs to stop the arrest. Protesters screamed—which police described in charging documents as a “distraction” technique—and the crowd pushed in on the small circle of officers.

Eventually, the officers uncuffed Witt but police, including 20 backup officers, followed orders from SFPD leadership to leave and regroup.

sea change from the department’s previous tactics, which have included placing snipers on rooftops at other protests.

Another lingering question: whether demonstrators had planned all along to take the obelisk down. No group has taken credit for it, and most would not confirm their presence at the Plaza that day to SFR—though police say social media posts suggest there may have been a longstanding plan.

What’s clear is that officers stuck to a clear directive to avoid the kinds of violent confrontations that have marked volatile protests against racial injustice around the nation—and that SFPD’s actions since have been muddled.

SFR used eyewitness accounts, court records and five hours of body camera video from SFPD to conclude that the events described in criminal complaints filed against those arrested largely match up with police video.

In one video, an officer describes orders from leadership on how to handle the protesters: “not hands on, best way is talk and try to be like, ‘Hey, you could be arrested for this and we don’t want it to go that far.’”

A second video shows officers leaving the Plaza, tailed by screaming protesters, as SFPD leadership issues an order: Leave and regroup at Fire Station 1.

One officer can be heard saying, “Let ‘em have it.”

Not long after that, the obelisk came down in clouds of dust and cheers.

Other videos reviewed by SFR show the beginnings and most volatile points of the incident.

City workers had been instructed to put up a wooden blockade around the obelisk to protect it during the expected

changed his tone, vowing to “round up” those responsible and has since charged five more people on felony and misdemeanor charges. (Padilla tells SFR “the decision to choose life over property does not mean that we are choosing not to enforce criminal law.”)

All seven people have court dates set for mid-November, though only a few appear to have retained lawyers. None have been arrested except for Sean Sunderland and Dylan Wrobel, who quickly posted bail.

Padilla has taken criticism for his department’s handling of the protest, but he insists that a detective had a watchful eye on the area through the surveillance camera and that officers could have been there immediately.

He has also said that had the department known in advance about plans to drag down the obelisk, he would have sent more officers in the first place.

During a tense meeting of the city’s Public Safety Committee on Nov. 5, Councilor Chris Rivera questioned the chief on the decision.

“I understand the feelings and sentiments of the people of Santa Fe and the way it looks but people need to understand that no peoples’ lives were injured, no officers were further injured,” Padilla said.

The chief also blamed the city’s construction delay of the protective barrier, saying that had it been completed on time, “we probably would not have been talking about this today.”

Who exactly—if anyone—organized the protest is also clouded in muddy waters. Representatives from The Red Nation, YUCCA, Tewa Women United and Three Sisters Collective all tell SFR they did not officially organize on the Plaza that day and had no part in the takedown of the obelisk—most would not confirm whether they had even been there.

Padilla has said publicly that when the obelisk came down, the protesters showed their “true intent” for the day.

This belief that the destruction may have been planned plays out in a criminal complaint filed against Schweitzer in Magistrate Court. In the complaint, law enforcement alleges that a post made in a Facebook group by an account with Schweitzer’s middle and last name read, “Let’s follow through on the original ask.” SFR was not able to find the post by publication.

Padilla declined to be interviewed for this story. In an email to SFR, Padilla says he’s not targeting any activist groups, but he does expect more arrests as the police investigation continues. The chief says SFPD’s actions on Oct. 12 “were in line with agency policy.”

Dream a Little Dream Rez Dogs artist Chaz John is back, and he’s knee deep in dreams and the American mythos You know how your dreaming life is a stitched-together assortment of vaguely familiar ideas, shapes and pseudorealities? Or when you describe to someone how you dreamed about them by saying, “You were you, but you weren’t you?” You know how the memory of the dream fades quickly the longer removed from it you find yourself, or how there’s often a pang of nostalgia associated with your subconscious mind’s ability to play movies for you while you sleep? Artist Chaz John (Winnebago, Mississippi Band Choctaw and European) is fascinated with this stuff, and it’s some of what makes it into his upcoming show at Ellsworth Gallery, Manifest Destiny’s Child.

In the show, John tackles the idea of the American frontier, the bizarre American insistence about what we might call the good ol’ days and a dash of self-directed Jungian psychology for a sort-of installation featuring paintings culled from his dreams and life, sculptural pieces (no spoilers, but we’re particularly looking forward to the piece “Andrew Jackson’s Dumb-Ass Leg”) and a video component.

“We are, in the present moment, the product of this sort of ideology and greater myth of American life,” John tells SFR. “It’s an approach to examining the outlook of the greater human or collective experience—I think I was kind of examining what it’s like to be both Indigenous and part of a colonial heritage. It seems, especially with the conflicts and everything happening right now, like everything is unrecognizable and recognizable at the same time. That’s very similar, I think, to what I think dreaming is.”

As always, John inserts humor into his show as well. A living M&M surfs through a dungeon and pigs tear through slop.

There are also elements of death and decay—yet also burning or renewal. It’s a departure from John’s previous works but another seeming home run from the Santa Fe-cum-Kansas artist. Ellsworth offers a virtual opening this Friday, but John says appointments will be available once the current COVID-19 lockdown lifts.

But it wasn’t…I think arts and culture production is hard, and I think the people who do it know that and don’t really think in those hard/easy terms. It’s ‘what do we need to do to get this movie, series of paintings, performance, opera or concert out to the world and share it with people?’ Everyone who does this work is driven by this concern. They just do it.

It was immediately obvious that with all of the fear and isolation our neighbors would be going through for an indefinite period of time, we needed to be fierce about what we do best, which is to connect people using these amazing stories. We snapped to it and it’s been really great. The conversations are so rich right now because the stakes for our culture and for our neighborhoods and for our families are so high that when you’re talking about a work of art or activism—when an artist does that, when an activist does that...we’re all in this together right now, so we can have conversations with a level of honesty and intensity that we probably wouldn’t have had before. We’ll keep [the series] going. and I’ll be consulting.

ince 2004, writer, filmmaker and all-around champ Jason Silverman has transformed the Center for Contemporary Arts’ Cinematheque program from an already solid indie/arthouse experience into something of which Santa Feans should be immensely proud.

Most recently, Silverman and crew created the ongoing Living Room series, a streamable selection of films and discussions with their makers that rose in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and would seem impressive in any city, let alone our sleepy hamlet. But now he’s off to new opportunities in New York. I spoke with Silverman as he prepares for the move.

We’ve all been leaning into the arts with these lockdowns. Not that it’s quantifiable per se, but

do you think it’s become more important than ever?

I don’t know that it’s become more important, but what I believe is that everyone recognizes the power of connection right now. In Santa Fe particularly, arts and culture are the way we connect. All of us go out to operas, movies, plays, concerts, exhibits, coffee shops, rallies and local restaurants; we meet each other, and that connection is the engine of this community’s progress.

We can’t meet in person right now, so I think we all recognize the vital and urgent nature of our connection through arts and culture. And we’re doing it in different ways, and when we do it we’re feeling the power of it, and we also feel the absence of the ways we used to do those things.

For a curator, it’s a really interesting moment. It’s a really powerful moment, because we can reach back into our personal histories and find the work that impacted us most deeply and revisit those in ways that offer our patrons and our neighbors new ways to see ourselves and our communities during the pandemic.

One of my favorite Living Room programs was an older film about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (editor’s note: the film was called Following the Ninth: In The Footsteps of Beethoven’s Final Symphony, and it streamed through the CCA last March) and it

SFR: First of all, where the hell do you think you’re going and what does that mean for the Cinematheque program at CCA moving forward?

Jason Silverman: I’ve got all kinds of amazing project work happening, including producing this amazing performance film that I can’t talk about quite yet. And other projects that are just taking up a lot of my time and energy. I thought it was just fair to let CCA rebuild with people who are going to be able to be more committed.

Is someone taking your job?

The CCA is going to be announcing new programmatic directions soon, and I’m sure they’ll have great people doing the same work that CCA has always done.

What’s to become of the Living Room series? Was that hard to throw together so immediately during a pandemic?

We had our first show, I think, 10 days after [the first] lockdown was an-

was so emotional. We had the filmmaker and Guillermo Figueroa from the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra talking about what that piece has meant to them, and what would have been a sweet conversation took on a level of urgency and emotion. The music took on a level of urgency and emotion. It became one where a lot of the audience were crying in their living rooms. I think all of us are raw right now, and that opens us to experiencing these stories in their various forms more powerfully.

As a filmmaker yourself, do you think the pandemic will be a turning point for the medium, or are filmmakers waiting for COVID-19 to relent so they can get back to the old way of doing things?

I’d say the combination of the pandemic and the greater kind of socioeconomic crisis that we’re in means that there will not be a return to what we would have considered normal before.

I think artists will play an even more important role in helping us find new ways of seeing each other and seeing the world. That movement is well under way. If you think about the protests from the summer and the growing distrust in corporate controlled media from all ends of the political spectrum, you realize… the soul of our communities is at the center of a battle. We’re trying to figure out who we are right now, and I don’t think we trust corporations to tell us. I think a lot of us are turning more and more toward people working outside the for-profit storytelling system for their information. That’s really encouraging and really scary. If we work with stories that talk about togetherness and kindness and love and progress as opposed to the stories that are dominated by fears and victimhood and revenge, we’re going to be a better, stronger community.

There are a lot of storytellers in every medium who are trying to reach us with empowering and enlightening stories in their various forms. I hope those stories connect with people and I hope the cultural institutions stay strong so they can tell those stories. Please, please, please know you don’t need to send your money to political campaigns. Support Santa Fe’s cultural institutions. We’re going to need them for repair, for connection, for reevaluation and for inspiration.

We need them now, we’re going to need them even more when we’re able to throw open the front door.

Santa Fe School of Cooking meets the pandemic with online classes and to-go options

I

t’s just all new, and it’s hard,” says Nicole Ammerman, director of the Santa Fe School of Cooking. “We quickly realized that if it wasn’t on our website, we weren’t going to be able to sell it.”

The Santa Fe School of Cooking turned 30 this year, just in time for COVID-19 public health orders to start restricting businesses from offering in-person service—or classes. But during the initial lockdown in April, Ammerman and the school’s staff worked quickly to create a series of online video classes that continue its mission of culinary education and that help it to remain a viable business.

The new way of doing things didn’t come without a fair amount of trial and error. In those early days, for ex-

ample, the school developed a number of one-on-one live experiences available by Zoom in addition to the prerecorded segments. The live sessions did not prove popular, however.

“We found out after running both for a while that there’s not a demand for the live classes,” Ammerman tells SFR. “It’s harder for us because there’s so much pressure to get things exactly right live.”

Instead, Ammerman and company made Zoom classes available for businesses and large groups, both as a team building exercise, or for something fun to do with friends while stuck at home (and hopefully social distancing).

For those who wish to learn a new recipe with the help of a professional in their own time, however, the school has taken a number of steps toward accessibility. Most pre-recorded

classes run just $20 apiece, and once purchased, can be permanently downloaded. The high-res videography makes observing the teacher easy, and time stamp bookmarking allows students to easily jump to any step in the recipe. When it comes to dishes that are a little more complicated than your average fare, that’s an important element, and with classes for dishes like masa-crusted porkchops, blue corn tamales with calabacitas, carne adovada, red chile from pods and many others, it’s a breeze to snap back to that important moment you may have missed.

But since ‘tis the season for thinking about Thanksgiving (and we’re all committed to not tracking COVID-19 to our loved one’s homes even if it means cooking the meal ourselves for once), the current class to beat might be chef Allen Smith’s newly released Modern Southwest Thanksgiving. At $90, it’s a little more pricy, but dishes include Brussels sprouts with cranberries, butternut squash and pecans, buttermilk mashed potatoes and more. The star of the show, though, is obviously the turkey roulade with mushroom stuffing, basted with chipotle. Oh, and dessert’s a pumpkin soufflée with honey and orange.

You can even tack harder-to-find ingredients to your video purchase.

That’s handy in case you’re wondering how the hell you were going to throw together a pumpkin soufflé with whatever you have at home.

Of course, if you’re too hungry or impatient to try and learn anything— and since sometimes the best meal is the one someone else made—the school also offers trays of enchiladas, tamales by the dozen, carne adovada by the quart and lots more for pickup, delivery or mail.

“A lady from Oklahoma was here for like a month, and when she went back home, she ordered 10 pans of enchiladas, 10 quarts of carne adovada— it was like a $750 worth of food out of our kitchen,” Ammerman says. “We were like ‘What are you doing!?’ and she’s like, ‘I have to have your food back in Oklahoma!’”

Things have been going so well, in fact, that Ammercan says the school plans to continue filming and offering online classes and to-go items once the pandemic is over.

“Covid has been tough,” she says, “but we’ve been able to accomplish some things that we’ve always talked about doing but never had the time to.”

Pumpkin Cheesecake (from The Santa Fe School of Cooking Cookbook) Serves 10 to 12 Crust: • ¾ cup graham cracker crumbs • 2 tbsp. sugar • 2 tbsp. melted butter Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• Thoroughly combine the crumbs, sugar, and butter.

• Press the mixture onto the bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan.

• Chill for 15 minutes Filling: • 1 ½ pounds cream cheese at room temperature • ½ cups sugar • 4 large eggs • ¾ cup canned solid-pack pumpkin • 2 tsp. ground canela or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 tbsp. Mexican vanilla • Whipped cream • Fresh strawberries 1.

In a mixer with a paddle attachment, whip the cream cheese and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs and the pumpkin.

Continue beating until the mixture is smooth.

3.

Add the canela or cinnamon and vanilla and incorporate thoroughly.

4.

Pour the cream cheese mixture into the prepared crust and bake approximately 1 hour, or until set.

5.

Turn off the oven and let the cheesecake sit for 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and chill.

6.

To serve, top with whipped cream and berries.

Teen activist gets the documentary treatment

This is speculation, of course, but Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg probably wouldn’t love the new Hulu original documentary about her from filmmaker Nathan Grossman.

See, in the film, we follow Thunberg from her earliest school strike days in Sweden, circa 2018, through international marches inspired by her activism and beyond. We watch her tear up across speeches to political cadres from countless countries. We follow her through some of her famous sailing sojourn from her homeland to New York City for the United Nations Climate Action Summit in 2019—the much-ballyhooed “How dare you?!” speech.

And it is through these moments that we learn one very important fact: She dislikes lip service.

Over and over again she tells anyone who’ll listen she’s grown tired of their “beautiful words” and inaction, and though I Am Greta is an interesting enough look at the behind-thescenes moments in her quest to address climate

+ LOOKS GREAT; INTRIGUING STORY - HONESTLY KIND OF BORING

We’re always here for some good Asian cinema, especially when it’s a piece by prolific Chinese actor/director/writer/filmmaker King Hu. But whereas the highlights of that particular world are many, it’s a little baffling that Hu’s 1979 film Raining in the Mountain would get the remaster treatment—it’s kind of a slog.

During the Ming Dynasty, the famous Three Treasures Temple faces more activity than usual. The abbot knows he’ll die soon and must name his successor, which brings an esquire, a wealthy landowner and an accomplished general to help arbitrate and facilitate the transfer of power. Meanwhile, a convicted criminal manages to alter his sentence to a monastic life at the temple, but a connection to a man in the general’s entourage could prove fatal; a young thief might just be roaming around, too, in search of a handwritten Tripiṭaka (Buddhist scripture) rumored to be beyond value.

In other words, the setup is all there for the thrills, chills and Dickensian spills that come from down-on-their-luck types thrust into a world of hardships and coincidences.

Sadly, though, Raining in the Mountain is mainly about long conversations in courtyards and parables, or at least the kind of teachings old

change, it very rarely gets into the actual nuts and bolts of what she’s fighting toward. In other words, we’re repeatedly told she’s doing activism, we’re just not told what, if anything, it’s actually affecting—or how the movement fell in behind her so quickly.

Instead, we get insight into times wherein she felt exhausted or didn’t want to eat. We see international footage of TV commentators attacking her for having Asperger’s (which is admittedly disgusting of the talking heads) and learn about Twitter users who hate her guts. We observe train rides and obsessive speech writing sessions; we watch Thunberg’s parents try to support her; we see the masses take to the streets. But how did this happen? Outside of a brief mention that an

folks like, namely, ones wherein there’s always some kind of trick wisdom hidden beneath the surface. Oh, there’s a fight scene or two, though they feel deflated—as does an early act sequence of a mysterious pair making their way across the massive temple grounds in what feels like real time. No, seriously—it’s, like, 10 solid minutes of two people running across the temple grounds.

Pity, too, as the story itself is intriguing.

Perhaps Hu was aiming for a fairy tale thing, but at around what feels like the 300th conversation about what the criminal did, who should be the abbot and how civilians and military types butt heads, it starts to feel like it’ll never end. That’s not to gloss over the gorgeous remaster and the few fleeting moments of excitement, rather that we could think of a lot of movies from that era that might have better deserved an update. This one’s for the Asian cinephiles only, and even then it’s more like a badge of honor than something you’ll be glad you trudged through. (ADV)

In 2017’s Band-Aid, writer/director/actor Zoe Lister-Jones (who also had a pretty OK arc on the TV show New Girl) cobbled together an

Some might argue I Am Greta is meant to be a portrait of Thunberg, to highlight a young person’s journey—that there’s a sea of documentaries about climate change available. This is true, but one can’t help but wonder if Thunberg signed on to raise awareness for her cause of for herself.

The former seems more likely, though it’s highly doubtful anyone who isn’t already onboard will see the film and be swayed. Honestly, there’s not enough usable information in it, anyway.

achingly relatable tale of late-stage relationship doldrums and the ways in which couples try to escape their ruts. It was a phenomenal pice of filmmaking that cemented ListerJones as a fresh voice to watch, at least for this writer.

In the newly released The Craft: Legacy, however, Lister-Jones deflates that enthusiasm, disappointing at nearly every turn and presenting a middling and out-of-touch homage to the witchy 1996 original movie— only this time it’s crammed with “hip” zoomer lingo and politics, plus barely there performances from Michelle Monaghan and David Duchovny.

It begins with Lily (Cailee Spaeny), a high schooler of indiscriminate age whose single mother (True Detective’s Monaghan) falls in with some toxic masculinity guru (Duchovny of the vile and unfunny Californication) and decides it’s time to cohabitate. Right away we learn Lily didn’t really have friends in her old town (she’s weird, y’all…with short hair and a mysterious necklace and sad glances and nervousness), but a rocky first day at There Are Probably Witches High tosses her in with a trio of young women/caricatures of modern youth played by Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon and Zoey Luna. Luna, for what it’s worth, is an out trans actress—which seems cool right up until she gets fewer lines than everyone else and most characters continually refer to “you guys” when addressing her group.

I AM GRETA Directed by Grossman Hulu, NR, 97 min.

Thankfully, there is no trans tragedy angle here, but the witches do hang around and say stuff like “stan” and “lit” and “fam,” and it is annoying.

Like the original movie, the budding witches realize their powers, told here in montage form. Lily, it seems, has the strongest abilities, and the quartet uses their newfound magick (with a “k”) to do fun things and good things and less good things and creepy things. Somewhere in there, Lister-Jones buries would-be interesting thoughts on toxic masculinity, performative woke-ness and consent, but whereas the real-life Gen Z seems to have bravely rejected gender norms, rape culture and racism wholesale, The Craft: Legacy examines such topics too fleetingly before placing the main dilemma of the film on Lily’s inability to process her emotions.

Or so it seems, anyway. Cue last act fall-apart, a one-two lightweight punch of dual twists that surely won’t resonate with the young audiences at which the movie’s aimed—or even at the slightly older set the filmmakers obviously hope loved the ’96 Neve Campbell/Fairuza Balk romp.

In the end, one thing is clear: They want a sequel for this one very badly, but it’s our duty as citizens of cinema to never let that happen.(ADV)

The goal of teachers and students alike was to avoid safe and predictable work so as to commune with wild spiritual powers, “keep the energies dancing,” and court eternal surprise. I think that would be a healthy approach for you to flirt with during the next few weeks.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika,” said Libran fashion writer Diana Vreeland. “We all need a splash of bad taste,” she continued. “It’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. Having no taste is what I’m against.”

I understand that her perspective might be hard to sell to you refined Librans. But I think it’s good advice right now. Whatever’s lacking in your world, whatever might be off-kilter, can be cured by a dash of good, funky earthiness. Dare to be a bit messy and unruly.
