I would like to express my comments in regards to this article that is turning a lot of heads and questioning law enforcement. As a wife of a City of Santa Fe police officer, I am deeply upset about this article and the views of the “whistleblower.” How dare you use the thin blue line as any kind of negative symbol except comradery within law enforcement. Shame on you. My children and I watched as police were mistreated and verbally abused by “law abiding citizens” while destroying a piece of history within our city. Try explaining to your children how people don’t respect people and because of that, dad may not come home, ever. Who’s the bad guy in situations like this?

I pray that the people of this city who share this young man’s views, that Artemesio Romero y Carver himself never needs assistance or life-saving measures for himself or his family because wouldn’t it be a shame if someone shows up at his doorstep who is part of the thin blue line family. You make something out of nothing just to sound like you know more? Stand in their shoes... just for a day, I dare you!

Potential inmate transfers could jeopardize Santa Fe County jail’s relatively low COVID-19 case counts

F

or months, actions taken by the cops, courts and the county to reduce inmate counts and observe COVID-19 protocols have worked to keep the Santa Fe County Detention Center from joining the ranks of hundreds of jails and prisons across the country that are hotspots for the spread of the virus.

The joint effort has worked, but as cases skyrocket across the state, the jail now faces increased risk of an outbreak.

Part of the risk comes from the Santa Fe population outside the jail’s walls, where the daily number of positive COVID-19 test results has hit record highs in the last week. With their transient populations and staff who return home each day, jails are subject to the whims of the virus when it spreads in the larger community.

And in Santa Fe, the jail also faces a new risk from a neighboring lockup where cases are running rampant.

New Mexico’s largest jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County, has become overwhelmed by a COVID-19 outbreak that has crippled its ability to offer judicial services to everyone.

Nearly a dozen inmates missed their hearings in the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe last week after MDC abruptly stopped organizing remote access to out-of-county hearings for inmates facing charges outside of Bernalillo County. MDC spokeswoman Julia Rivera says they will remain in jail at MDC until Santa Fe County makes arrangements to transport them to Santa Fe and reschedule their hearings.

Since March, MDC has given those inmates—who were arrested in the Albuquerque area on new charges there, but also face warrants issued in other jurisdictions—access to video hearings in Santa Fe and elsewhere.

Rivera tells SFR that with 1,300 inmates, MDC is already strained to facilitate hearings for those accused of committing crimes within its own jurisdiction while attempting to stop the spread of the virus. According to

Rivera, the jail does not have the capacity to continue meeting the judicial needs of inmates facing charges in other counties.

“We’ve got officers that are getting sick, we’ve got inmates that are getting sick, it’s a burden having to facilitate for courts in other counties,” she says. “We have been doing the best that we can to accommodate and help where we can, but at the end of the day it’s the jurisdiction in which the crime was committed that needs to take responsibility.”

Yet according to Assistant District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies—who will be stepping into the top job in Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties’ First Judicial District in January— and Santa Fe County spokeswoman

A New Risk

Carmelina Hart, neither Santa Fe County nor the District Attorney’s Office were notified of the change that caused momentary chaos in the courts last week and left many inmates in limbo.

Carmack-Altwies tells SFR her office is fighting the change. However, if it sticks, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office will be responsible for picking up inmates from MDC and bringing them to the jail in Santa Fe. Carmack-Altwies is also concerned that transporting inmates from Bernalillo to Santa Fe could spread the virus to Santa Fe’s jail population.

So far, officials in Santa Fe County have largely kept the virus at bay. The facility has not recorded a single case of spread between inmates, Deputy Warden Robert Page tells SFR. As of Thursday last week, the Santa Fe jail had recorded 14 virus cases since the pandemic began in March, with seven positive test results for inmates and seven for staff. Page says he believes all the inmates were already infected when they arrived at the jail.

By comparison, MDC has recorded 673 cases as of Oct. 27—598 inmates and 75 staff. That’s up from a total of 75 cases

on September 8—61 inmates and 14 staff.

Page attributes part of the Santa Fe jail’s success in fending off the virus to the COVID-19 protocols, but he also credits judges, attorneys and police officers for working together to reduce the jail population.

According to population data collected by the New Mexico Association of Counties, the population at the Santa Fe jail dropped from 446 in early March to a low of 294 inmates in May. Since then, it has slowly crept back up, reaching 340 by Oct. 22, but is still far below pre-pandemic averages.

Jennifer Burrill, a public defender in Santa Fe, agrees that it takes goodwill and cooperation at every step along the judicial process to keep inmates safe.

“I think it’s definitely been a collective effort,” she says, “and so so far, I think we’ve done a pretty good job of minimizing the risk as much as possible. But, you know, things like what’s going on now with MDC jeopardizes that.”

Santa Fe Deputy Police Chief Ben Valdez tells SFR that in early April the department instructed its officers to issue citations instead of arresting people for nonviolent and non-DWI petty misdemeanors and other minor violations.

“Because we took that path there was a significant decrease in the number of people that we booked,” says Valdez.

Carmack-Altwies tells SFR her office asked public defenders for lists of their clients who were already in jail for nonviolent offenses who could be released on house arrest without putting the community at risk.

Magistrate Court judges stopped issuing arrest warrants for minor infractions such as failing to pay a fine, and at the District Court level judges looked for opportunities for alternative sentencing such as house arrest with an ankle bracelet for monitoring, rather than jail time.

Page tells SFR a nurse at the jail screens all new inmates for COVID-19 immediately upon intake. Those who show symptoms or who may have been recently exposed are separated from the rest in a special “quarantine pod,” though all inmates are held for 14 days and tested before they are allowed to enter the general population.

The jail conducts random tests of its general population and tests all staff members at least once a week, says Page.

Santa Fe County spokeswoman Carmelina Hart says that the county was not notified of the change at MDC, but that these measures should protect the jail from infection even if inmates do get transferred from Bernalillo.

Record turnout gives Dems victories around the state, but lots of cleanup left to do amid pandemic election Voters wait as the sun sets at the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds on Election Day.

ew Mexicans watched three records tumble on Tuesday.

State voters for the first time chose to send an all-woman congressional delegation to Washington, DC, where the overall balance of political power remains in doubt from the Oval Office on down.

To pull off the first feat—and to give New Mexico Democrats not just an advantage in Congress, but also at least maintain their significant margins in the statehouse—more residents had to cast general election ballots than ever before.

And it all happened on a day when beleaguered public health officials reported a devastating 1,141 new cases of COVID-19, easily eclipsing the previous highest daily total.

The previous record for total votes—833,365, set in 2008—was an afterthought this year almost before Election Day, with 770,596 New Mexicans voting early in person or absentee. The new standard sailed past 900,000 votes as of presstime, with the possibility that the record for percentage of registered voters—70%, also set in 2008—could fall as well.

The winners here included Joe Biden, for whom several news organizations declared victory in New Mexico over Donald

Trump before the polls even closed.

(Never mind that the nation will wait to learn whether Trump stays in the White House.)

Democrat Deb Haaland, according to early, unofficial results, won reelection handily in the 1st Congressional District; Teresa Leger Fernandez, also a Democrat, appears headed for Washington to represent Santa Fe and other parts Northern New Mexico in the US House of Representatives in the 3rd.

Meanwhile, the rematch between Republican Yvette Herrell and incumbent Democrat Xochitl Torres Small in the southern 2nd Congressional District looked to favor Herrell. But early, unofficial results show Democrat Tom Udall’s US Senate seat going to US Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, a Democrat, over Republican TV weatherman Mark Ronchetti.

In state House contests, Democrats appeared to have at least maintained their 46-24 advantage over Republicans, possibly even expanding it with what early, unofficial results showed as potential victories by progressive candidates who ousted long-serving centrists in the June primary. Election night also was unlikely to end with Republicans moving past their 16-26 deficit in the state Senate.

A constitutional amendment to change spots on the Public Regulation

Commission from elected to appointed positions and to sync up some election times appeared poised to pass easily, early, unofficial results showed.

And in Santa Fe, voters appeared to have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a spate of bond issues to improve libraries, senior centers and other capital projects.

Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver tells SFR in an interview around 8:30 pm that several state Senate contests would likely be decided Wednesday.

But widening the lens, she says she’s “extremely proud of and blown away by New Mexican voters’ participation” in this year’s election.

She attributed the massive turnout to intense interest in the presidential contest, marked by incredible divisiveness, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has really driven the message home that the decisions government makes have impacts on lives, on our ability to survive and thrive,” Toulouse Oliver says. “And I have never seen this level of depth of understanding about the mechanics of voting, the process itself. I started talking about what to expect two or three months before the election; usually it’s two or three days.”

The turnout was eclectic—some voted in defense of the environment, or their businesses, or human rights. That’s why

Kris Sleicher, a Santa Fe teacher and Joe Biden voter, used the day off to vote.

“It feels like a sacred day,” Sleicher says.

“It just felt like it was important to do the day of. It’s something I needed to do, for me to go in.”

Clayton Montoya and Chyna Brookfield, 23 and 20 respectively, feel the same—though they went in for different reasons. After a busy day, they found time to vote at the end of the countdown. SFR spoke to them in the quiet dark at the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds.

Montoya tells SFR he didn’t make up his mind till the ballot hit his hand. His father owns Cheeks, a Cerrillos Road strip club. Because of that, he felt compelled to vote for Trump, who he sees as more business friendly.

However, he feels disillusioned.

“It’s not that I support the president or our government because I don’t support, really, the government,” Montoya says.

“It’s all corrupt at that point.”

As Montoya explained his vote to SFR, Brookfield’s eyes widened. She didn’t know that Montoya would vote for Trump, though as a former Cheeks employee, she understands the choice.

“We need a person to run America who actually…makes good decisions and makes America the best it can be instead of doing whatever the fuck they want,” Brookfield says, adding that she voted for Biden.

“Every voice matters. I just want the best for America because I live here.”

At Tesuque Pueblo, seven women who represented four generations from the same family cast their votes together.

Gailene Morgan, 19, was a first-time voter along with her sister, while her great grandmother, Marie F Quinlivan, 90, says she’s voted in more elections than she can remember.

“I’m happy I got to vote because my voice matters,” Morgan tells SFR. “But I am feeling very anxious for results tonight because I think it’s gonna be a close race.”

The Borderlands Photographer Morgan Smith documents migrant lives at the US/Mexico border

or a decade, I’ve been making monthly trips to the El Paso/ Juárez area to document conditions and help various humanitarian groups. In late 2018 when a flood of migrants appeared along the border, mostly fleeing from violence in Central American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, I began working with La Casa del Migrante, the major migrant shelter in Ciudad Juárez, seeking out people on the streets of the city and prowling along the border wall trying to interview Mexican soldiers. What emerged are photographs that document US cruelty toward those fleeing their home countries.

This boy said that for an extra dollar, he’d show me how easy it was to climb the wall.

Early one morning I drove along the border wall west of El Paso, Texas and Juรกrez, Mexico and suddenly these migrants came running toward me. I tried to talk to them but they kept running and disappeared over the next hill.

I once had a mentor define forgiveness as offering someone else the opportunity to make amends. Her definition opened a window in my mind; up to that point, I had mostly heard forgiveness discussed as forgiving and forgetting. That felt neither healing nor possible. I was young, pissed and not so interested in “letting go of the past” in order to make folks who’d traumatized me more comfortable.

The idea of offering someone else the opportunity to make amends centers their accountability in the process. I will forgive you when you show up. It offers the option of rebuilding trust, not compartmentalizing and pretending. It invites relationship rather than rupture.

It takes a lot of love.

Mending relationships has been on my mind because a dear friend and collaborator caused significant harm to folks we both care about, and it’s been catching up with him. Much of it happened years ago, when we were younger and less aware of the impact of our actions. Some was more recent.

Among other things, the harm involved sketchy boundaries with women and coworkers, and instances of shielding other men who were causing harm to women. Some has been resolved through public and personal accountability processes, and some still lingers and festers under years of avoidance, shame and selective memory. Figuring out how to help my community hold this person accountable while staying connected to him as someone I deeply love has been quite the conundrum. Understanding my role is daunting. Where have I been complicit or conflict-avoidant? Where do I need to step up and be brave? How can I support this process and where do I need to step back ’cause I’m too close to it?

One of the places I’ve been turning recently for inspiration and resources is the transformative justice (TJ) movement.

Transformative justice goes a step beyond restorative justice to not only look at how we can reconcile harm and foster community accountability, but how we can do this outside the criminal justice system, and while working towards transformation of the social conditions that lead to harm in the first place. TJ is brilliant, messy and demanding. I am a newbie to this work, and I am so grateful to the folks, largely BIPOC women and queers, who have been developing this theory and praxis for decades.

An awesome anthology of TJ strategies and stories came out this year called Beyond Survival. In an essay titled “What to Do When You’ve Been Abusive,” by Kai Cheng Thom, the author asserts that “if we are ever to see the dream

of transformative justice become a widespread reality, we must collectively resist the culture of disposability that says that people who have done harm are no longer people, they are ‘trash,’ that they must be ‘canceled.’”

Within the social justice and activist circles I’m part of, cancellation is not unusual. Folks can be loving and visionary but also surprisingly harsh, punitive and ostracizing. High standards for behavior are the norm. It’s easy to fuck up and it’s easy to be cast out. But getting “canceled” is not just something that happens among organizers and lefties—cancel culture has been all over the public radar lately. From JK Rowling, who’s received a lot of heat for being an unapologetic transphobe, to the various men being brought down by the #MeToo movement, folks are demanding accountability and attempting to cancel some big names.

Closer to home, there are plenty of folks who want to cancel my friend. It sucks, and I understand where they’re coming from. Giving someone second and third chances requires relationship, commitment and, most of all, it requires the person who caused harm to fully take responsibility for the impact of their choices, and to fundamentally change their behavior.

My friend is taking change seriously— he’s working with a therapist around issues of accountability and boundaries, repairing individual relationships when possible, and making moves in his work life to not repeat the same mistakes going forward. This is why I’ve felt like I can keep collaborating with him and being chosen family together. But shame and guilt have also made him intermittently evasive and shut-down, and I recently discovered some places he has been avoiding accountability. When I tried to journal about the situation I found myself writing him a letter, asking questions like “Why couldn’t you stop? Why couldn’t you have better boundaries and more self-control? I want you to step up and be brave and honest. I want you to apologize to everyone involved. To really, deeply apologize, and never do these things again. I want you to get it. I want you to stop blaming other people.”

More than anything, I want to feel like I, and others who have been harmed, can heal. I want my friend to fully earn our trust back through his actions. I don’t want him canceled. I want him clear and honest and humble. I want profound transformation of the social conditions that too often lead men to harm and folks from marginalized groups to be harmed. I have offered him the opportunity to make amends. He’s working on it.

Mega-Modernity Paul-Henri Bourguignon and a lifetime of creation By the time Belgian-born artist PaulHenri Bourguignon was 18, circa 1924, he was already learning from the likes of Armand DePauw and ATJ Bastien. By the time he was 22, he held his first solo show—where he sold every single piece.

By the mid-1930s, he worked for the Belgian tourism department, and during WWII, Bourguignon worked for an agency that distributed ration stamps while he wrote novellas and plays (one of which, En Encountant Toone Jouer le Bossu, would be performed in his hometown of Brussels in 1947).

He found work as an arts journalist in that same mid-’40s period, writing for the paper Le Phare and its weekly offshoot Le Phare Dimanche (huzzah for early iterations of the alt.weekly!). And though Bourguignon apparently rarely painted during this period, he still established a gallery known as Le Scorpion. By the end of ’47/into ’48, he found himself in Haiti for his newspaper, where he’d live for 15 months while helping to spread the word about the burgeoning Haitian primitive art movement. That’s also where he met his wife, the anthropologist Erika Eichhorn.

By the the late 1940s, Bourguignon and the missus wound up in Peru, where he published the novel The Greener Grass based on the travels; he took up photography as well—but still, he did not paint.

By the 1950s, the Bourguignons immigrated to Columbus, Ohio, where Erika taught at Ohio State University and Paul-Henri worked in gouache, charcoal, graphite and pencil. Solo exhibits soon followed. New paintings sprang up based on his life and travels. The world started taking notice in the mid1960s. Cut to the 1980s, a few more solo shows; Bourguignon’s death in 1988; a wider base of collectors.

n mid-October, Creative Santa Fe announced it would “move into an inactive state effective Nov. 1.”

What this means precisely is a little murky, but the logistical and economic reality of COVID-19 has affected the nonprofit as it has so many others, and though there’s at least one last initiative in the pipeline for now, the future remains uncertain: The organization’s executive director, Cyndi Conn, is stepping down. But as we learn to navigate a world wherein congregation—the core of Creative Santa Fe’s work—remains tricky at best, it’s worth it to look at some of the positive impacts the organization has made over the last 15 years.

Describing exactly what Creative Santa Fe does is honestly kind of hard.

The nonprofit has certainly been a fixture of the Santa Fe arts world for nearly two decades, and in that time accomplished some pretty major things (recent developments like the Siler Yard affordable housing project and the Virtual Lemonaid concert for COVID-19 in May, for example) under its mission, namely to leverage the creative community in the interest of collaborative community impact. Still, chances are if you ask someone about ’em, that person won’t know much other than they maybe have been to a talk, a networking event or heard the name bandied about.

“We help broker,” says Conn, who has spent the last decade helming the organization as its public face. “We bring together collaborators and partners who typically wouldn’t be in a room together.

The thing we do is build trust. And we use the arts and the artistic process to reframe how we think about issues.”

Nine-and-a-half years ago, Conn was working in the gallery game as a curator, and as she moves on to an exciting mystery project in Park City, Utah (seriously, she can’t tell us what it is), she’s been in reflection mode.

“I didn’t know anything about city policies, economic development—I didn’t have any goals,” she says of her early days with the nonprofit. “Bill Miller, our board chair, was the one who tapped me, and

he said he felt like we could do something to really reignite the creative community and economy in Santa Fe.” “I think we just started talking about the possibilities,” Miller tells SFR of his first meeting with Conn in 2011. “The notion was that we didn’t know exactly what we wanted to do, but we wanted to do something; Cyndi was attracted to the notion that we could have an impact in Santa Fe. One of the great things about Cyndi is her growth from that point to today. It’s been astounding.”

This included projects like the Disruptive Futures Dialogue Series, a number of talkback sessions wherein creative leaders and others looked to identify and address community issues, and the Creative Mingle arts-based networking events.

Looking to perhaps the most concrete, or at least lastingly and tangibly meaningful, example of Creative Santa Fe’s efforts, however, the Siler Yards Arts+Creativity housing project is set to open for applications soon. Its very existence, in part, is thanks to Conn’s efforts.

Through Creative Santa Fe, she not only managed to get the city to donate 5 acres of land in Midtown, she raised funds, swayed politicians and made sure any development dollars stayed in the community.

“There’s just such a need for affordable housing in Santa Fe, and obviously there still is,” Conn says. “We worked with [artist’s live/workspace developer] ArtSpace in Minneapolis at first, just finding out if it was a project that was really worth our time—but when everything came back saying that this was something we absolutely needed to do, we made a requirement that the lead developer had to be local.”

Creative Santa Fe put out an RFP for just that, and the winning group was New Mexico Interfaith Housing.

ing under a certain amount of money—no easy task. There will be other unannounced criteria for applicants as well. “[Conn and Creative Santa Fe] did some really critical things I wasn’t able to do, which were to get city councilors onboard and get some conceptual commitments from the city,” Werwath explains. “I don’t think we would be where we are if they hadn’t catalyzed that work.”

Looking to more recent affairs, Conn spearheaded Virtual Lemonaid, an early pandemic online concert featuring Buffy SaintMarie and David Byrne, as well as New Mexico artists like Luke Bern Carr, A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Nacha Mendez. Through that event, Creative Santa Fe raised over $61,000 for the All Together New Mexico Fund and the Santa Fe County Connect Fund.

As for the future, Creative Santa Fe has at least one last trick up its sleeve for now—the Santa Fe Data Platform. A collaboration with the Thornburg Foundation, the Santa Fe Community Foundation, Meow Wolf, Southwest Care and Con Alma, the goal is to look at how data might be used to run a better city.

“There are so many cities using predictive data to make more informed policy decisions [and address things like] hospitals, hotels and tourism departments,” Conn says. “They have a much clearer sense of the health of the community.”

Exactly how that will all shake out remains unknown. There’s the pandemic to consider, of course, and that pesky inactive status. Conn will continue overseeing the project as an independent contractor, though she’s not sure when we’ll start to see results. In the end, though, she believes it will all be more than worth it.

For now, however, it appears it’s time for Conn to take a bow and head out into the sunset.

“I know better than to have any sort of prediction about where my life is going to go, but Santa Fe will always be one of my home bases,” she tells SFR. “It’s stating the obvious, but right now we need new ways of communicating… creative problem solvers. The arts are such a good vehicle for that.”

The Chinese Dumpling Gang Chang’s Dumpling House has arrived—thank goodness

id you want me to put this order in right away?” the voice on the other end of the phone asked. “It’s kind of cold out there, we want to make sure the food stays warm.

15 minutes OK?” So far so good. See, the recent insanely snowy day made two things clear—I needed to leave the office early, and I sure as hell wasn’t about to cook something at home myself. And then it dawned on me: Everybody whose tastes I take seriously has been bugging me to visit Chang’s Dumpling House (1807 Second St., 213-2088); right across from Back Road Pizza), and the time had finally come.

Perusing the concise but enticing menu online, I settled on a large order of panfried veggie dumplings (though there are a handful of other options like shrimp, pork, fish, lamb and chicken; $6.99-$13.99 and all available pan-fried or steamed), but the zucchini, chives and egg in the vegetable version sounded too good to pass up. Sadly, Chang’s was already sold out of

the zucchini pockets with black fungus ($4.99) for the day, but the voice on the phone suggested the crispy scallion pancakes ($3.99) and an order of egg rolls with cabbage, bean sprout, mushrooms, carrots and onions ($3.99). I chose to pass on the vegetable buns as a large order of dumplings plus sides sounded like plenty of food. I’d come to regret this decision later, so believe me when I say that 15 dumplings for two might sound like too much food, but sincerely is not.

Roughly 15 minutes later, I entered the new restaurant and was greeted with an aromatic wall of Chinese cooking smells and sounds. Chang’s doesn’t really do in-person dining just yet—there’s the pandemic to consider—and other than a kind of strange just-moved-in feeling that dissipated with the realization that everything smelled incredible, the warm interior was a welcome respite. My food was ready to go, packaged neatly in one of the most adorable yet brilliant to-go containers I’d ever seen; each of the 15 dumplings nestled in its own little pocket to avoid any sticky situations.

The order was hot to the touch and sealed up responsibly; the server wore a mask and gloves and had sanitizing products available at the counter.

Smaller Bites • After promising SFR they’d open soon, coffee shop/restaurant/plant store Opuntia is indeed back up and running in the Railyard at 1807 Alcaldesa St. I hear the soft opening last Wednesday went off without a hitch, and that the coffee is straight up divine.

• I also wanted to make sure to say congrats to Second Street Brewery for taking home gold at the Great American Beer Festival this year.

Winning the American Nut Brown category with their aptly named Nut Brown Ale, the company Rod Tweet build continues to evolve and improve. I also hear there will soon be outdoor heaters at the beloved local brewery’s Rufina St. location, where I recently had one of the best fish and chip meals of my life—and I lived in England as a kid (sorry for the brag).

• If you’ve missed out on the special meals being put together by chef Hue-Chan Karels and her Open Kitchen outfit, feel bummed. Not

with the items moved from their to-go containers into bowls, my partner and I made quick work of the order, dipping into the included chili and sweet and sour sauces and remarking on how these were easily the freshest egg rolls we’d ever tasted. Like them, the dumplings struck a sublime balance between chewy at the edges, crispy in all the right places. Each felt like a miniature flavor explosion, particularly thanks to the subtle bite of the chives.

The scallion pancakes were excellent as well, crispy with an ever-so-slightly sweet moment that snuck up and stayed.

FOOD

to worry, though, as Karels’ next big adventure is the curated Let’s Nhậu! event on Dec. 11. Nhậu, I understand, is Vietnamese for “together,” and it’s all about small plates for good friends. According to her website, Karels’ menu “re-imagines and celebrates the essence of the Vietnamese Nhậu drinking and eating culture,” but what does that mean to you? It means you order through Open Kitchen (openkitchenevents.com) by Monday, Dec. 7 and four days later you munch down.

• It’s unclear where it went exactly, but I also hear Loyal Hound (730 St, Michael’s Drive, 471-0440) briefly took a chicken green chile stew off the menu, but that as of last week it’s back. Good news, people who apparently missed the stew.

• If you’ve been dying for some killer BBQ, be aware Uncle DT’s (3134 Rufina St., uncledt.com) offers free delivery on Wednesdays. So, plan your ribs and brisket and turkey and chicken BBQ needs for mid-week.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and all that, so missing out on the veggie buns felt silly. Chang’s also serves up pork and beef chili buns ($8.99-$9.99) with six to an order, and the meat eaters out there will surely want to try the Korean bibimap with egg, bean sprouts and bulgogi beef. I should have asked if they’d make that without the meat. No matter, though, because I’ll be back. With service seven days a week from 10:30 am9 pm and a reported second location on Cerrillos Road in the works, it’d kind of be hard not to.

The Craft: Legacy Review Lightweight as a feather, bored stiff

In 2017’s Band-Aid, writer/director/actor Zoe Lister-Jones (who also had a pretty OK arc on the TV show New Girl) cobbled together an achingly relatable tale of late-stage relationship doldrums and the ways in which couples try to escape their ruts. It was a phenomenal pice of filmmaking that cemented Lister-Jones as a fresh voice to watch, at least for this writer.

In the newly released The Craft: Legacy, however, Lister-Jones deflates that enthusiasm, disappointing at nearly every turn and presenting a middling and out-of-touch homage to the witchy 1996 original movie—only this time it’s crammed with “hip” zoomer lingo and politics, plus barely there performances from Michelle Monaghan and David Duchovny.

It begins with Lily (Cailee Spaeny), a high schooler of indiscriminate age whose single mother (True Detective’s Monaghan) falls in with some toxic masculinity guru (Duchovny of the vile and unfunny Californication) and decides it’s time to cohabitate. Right away we learn Lily didn’t really have friends in her old town (she’s weird, y’all… with short hair and a mysterious necklace and sad glances and nervousness), but a rocky first day at There Are Probably Witches High tosses her in

+ BETTER THAN YOU’D THINK - A LITTLE TRITE; EVEN NEWER STORY BEATS ARE PREDICTABLE

With 1990’s The Witches having reached a sort of cult status (mainly for ruining lives with that intro thing about the little girl trapped forever in a painting), it’s only natural to react to an HBO remake of the Roald Dahl story with consternation. But then you start seeing that names like Robert Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro, Kenya Barris, Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway are attached, and you breathe a little easier.

The story’s the same: A young boy (newcomer Jahzir Bruno) moves in with his grandmother (Spencer) after his parents die, and a fateful vacation to a ritzy seaside hotel coincides with the annual meeting of the witching world’s top brass. There, the Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has concocted a scheme for international covens to transform children into mice—they hate kids and mice are easier to stomp to death, it seems—and the young boy is swept up in the mania with some other recently-turned-mice types.

Del Toro/Zemeckis/Barris’ take, however, sets the action in the late 1960s, complete with Motown music cues, then centers Black

with a trio of young women/caricatures of modern youth played by Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon and Zoey Luna. Luna, for what it’s worth, is an out trans actress—which seems cool right up until she gets fewer lines than everyone else and most characters continually refer to “you guys” when addressing her group. Thankfully, there is no trans tragedy angle here, but the witches do hang around and say stuff like “stan” and “lit” and “fam,” and it is annoying.

Like the original movie, the budding witches realize their powers, told here in montage form.

Lily, it seems, has the strongest abilities, and the quartet uses their newfound magick (with a “k”) to do fun things and good things and less good things and creepy things. Somewhere in there, ListerJones buries would-be interesting thoughts on toxic masculinity, performative woke-ness and consent, but whereas the real-life Gen Z seems to have bravely rejected gender norms, rape culture

actors while giving Spencer’s character a little voodoo know-how. The superior special effects wizardry of today adds a little more oomph.

As always, Spencer proves herself a national treasure. She cuts an empathetic figure during emotional scenes reflecting on life and loss; she phases into heroic and witty against daunting odds—she’s comforting but powerful at once. Bruno as the young lad is serviceable enough, but Hathaway repeatedly steals the film as the horrifying Grand High Witch. Part Anjelica Huston from the original (because how could you not?), part Pennywise, Hathaway’s take oscilates jarringly between that of a glamorous wig aficionado to menacing monstrosity. Kudos to Hathaway’s use of the crazy eye technique, and kudos again for infusing just the right amount of humor to an objectively horrifying character.

Stanley Tucci’s in the mix as well, as is some early-movie narration from Chris Rock, though in both cases that hardly seems to matter. Those things exist and little else.

Anyway, we’re just here for the hijinks and the horror lite elements. As an added bonus, you can show this to your kids alongside the original movie then ask them to compare and contrast. That oughta kill a few hours. (ADV)

and racism wholesale, The Craft: Legacy examines such topics too fleetingly before placing the main dilemma of the film on Lily’s inability to process her emotions.

Or so it seems, anyway. Cue last act fall-apart, a one-two lightweight punch of dual twists that surely won’t resonate with the young audiences at which the movie’s aimed—or even at the slightly older set the filmmakers obviously hope loved the ’96 Neve Campbell/Fairuza Balk romp.

In the end, one thing is clear: They want a sequel for this one very badly, but it’s our duty as citizens of cinema to never let that happen.

DAVID BYRNE’S AMERICAN UTOPIA

+ BYRNE RULES; THE MUSIC, DUH - COULD HAVE GONE DEEPER

It’s only slightly odd for Talking Heads front man David Byrne to claim his 2019 Broadway show, American Utopia, is merely based on the album and tour of the same name—it’s pretty much a concert. In fact, it absolutely is a concert (witty banter betwixt songs included). But rather than re-performing the live show he’d toured and call it a day, Byrne does his fans and newcomers a solid by assembling one of the greatest international bands of all time, tossing it onto a minimal stage to play a combo of new songs and hits and then hiring Spike Lee to direct the thing. It’s borderline magical (and will be to many) and does that super-fun up-close-and-personal thing that seems to grow more popular the longer we’re pandemic-ing. But Utopia doesn’t quite reach the Elysian heights you maybe expected or heard about from Byrne’s legions of adorers. Love him or like him, though, you’ll never mistake his style for someone else’s. Plus, the man’s got jams.

What else could you want from one of the most seminal songwriters of our time and the creator behind 1984’s Stop Making Sense, arguably the single greatest contemporary music movie?

Here, however, Byrne plumbs the depths of his

psyche in a way that feels more vulnerable than ever. Rampant throughout Utopia are thought pieces on a house vs. a home, Byrne’s relationship to brains and their chemistry (he’s famously autistic) and some pretty sweet if restrained and simplistic dance moves choreographed by Annie-B Parson.

The highlight, though, comes with Byrne’s cover of Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout,” wherein his ragtag band of singers, dancers, percussionists and rhythm-ers implore the audience to consider the countless Black Americans killed across time. “Say her name,” they command, or “say his name. Say their name.” Sandra Bland.

Ahmaud Arbery. Emmett Till. It’s a powerful tribute and an example of an artist using their platform for good. It also strikes a somber tone without keeping us there for good; the in-film audience, who danced in the aisles mere moments earlier, sits at attention while family members of the slain hold up large scale photos offstage. It’s chilling, but vital and hopefully reaches someone, especially as we barrel toward the election.

It also solidifies Byrne’s reputation as enduringly relevant, and though it might have been nice to get a little more insight into the nuts and bolts of the songs or even just the performance itself, folks will be talking about this one. As well they should.
