MANUFACTURED CONSENT Mr. Kirmse referred to “trusted Wildfire management specialist” but that is an oxymoron. If you look closely, the World Bank’s forestry programs Mr. Kirmse is so proud to be a part of, they removed vast numbers of trees in Latin America and the rest of the world, and replaced them with huge monocrop farms for export.

The lesson learned from devastating wildfires: climate change is the driver. It is simplistic to blame dead trees on the ground for gigantic wildfires...The Forest Service and the Timber industry’s expertise is in manufacturing consent for their agenda. They are also talented at making up new euphemisms for their destructive behavior.

The Forest Service isn’t above the law.

Instead of endlessly complaining about being held accountable they should have started the environmental impact study long ago. It could have been completed by now.

If you want to see how effective the forest service treatments are, hike up to the top of Black Canyon, look at the dead zone created 18 years ago with a prescribed burn. I don’t think anyone would call it regeneration.

VOTE NO ON PRC CHANGE There are at least three good reasons to vote NO on Constitutional Amendment 1.

First, a mysterious political action committee called the “Committee to Protect New Mexico Consumers” is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote the amendment without disclosing the source of that dark money. If this constitutional amendment is really so good for consumers, then why are the people who are bankrolling it hiding their identities from the public?

Second, as PRC Commissioner Steve Fischmann explains, “the ballot description of Amendment 1 deliberately conceals its real purpose—taking away your vote.” The description of the amendment never indicates that the PRC is being converted from an elected commission to an appointed one.

Why hide the ball from voters?

Finally, the problem CA 1 seeks to fix has already been addressed. In 2012, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to dramatically increase the qualifications of PRC commissioners. Current commissioners include an environmental engineer, an attorney, a business executive, and people with experience in state and federal government. The current system strikes a good balance by requiring commissioners to be qualified to do the job while still being accountable to the public that elects them.

he dust settled an hour or two after activists pulled down the obelisk in the Santa Fe Plaza, cheering as the first half toppled, and then the second. The stone crumbled into pieces as it hit the ground, sending up miniature plumes of grit that hung over the crowd.

For Hispanic business owners and entrepreneurs in Santa Fe, not much about the events of Indigenous Peoples Day feels settled, despite the Plaza returning to its usual quiet, red-and-gold autumn splendor. SFR interviewed members of the board of directors at the Santa Fe Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an organization of member entrepreneurs with businesses scattered across the city in dozens of industries.

SFR found some agreement: The destruction of the obelisk was a violent act, members said, and a poor approach to demanding change. And members agreed that Mayor Alan Webber’s administration acted too slowly in addressing the boiling local and national racial tensions that preceded the obelisk’s undoing.

There were points of disagreement, too, with some members condemning the activists’ move. Others acknowledged that drastic action may have been required to be heard and that the monument celebrated genocide.

The differences, at least among chamber members, cleaved along generational and cultural divides: Younger members offered sympathetic takes on last week’s actions, which led to two arrests. Older members say that pulling down a monument is an unfair effort to rewrite history.

Webber and his police department, which chose to stand down as protesters took the obelisk, have offered varying stories to explain their stance on the meaning of the monument, which many have seen as racist.

Tony Horta Campos, 28, is one of the younger members on the chamber’s board, and believes he may be the only one who considers himself Latino as well as Hispanic.

“My view on [the obelisk] is definitely different. That might be because I am a millennial. It may also be because I am not from the area originally,” Campos tells SFR. “I don’t think bringing down monuments by force is the right way. But I do understand [the activists’] side…As a Mexican, I definitely not only identify with my Spanish roots, but definitely my Indigenous roots, and I’m proud of them.”

Campos sees the monument as “oppressive” and says the history has been presented in a “sugar-coated way.”

“They don’t acknowledge the full magnitude of all the bloodshed that was done and I think that’s what is offensive to Native Americans,” Campos says.

He says Webber dragged his feet in setting up a group to discuss the further removal of monuments around the city, potentially leading to the events of Oct. 12. In June, Webber removed a statue of Spanish conquistador Don Diego de Vargas and claimed he would revive a commission to evaluate other statues and monuments.

That commission has yet to materialize.

city administrations have been heating up since the protests to abolish the Entrada three years ago.

“When the coalition of…Indigenous women activists got Mayor Webber to promise to remove the obelisk, and that didn’t happen…this was once again, we are being ignored,” Ortiz says. “We actually grew up and live in Santa Fe so being dismissed by the mayor of our hometown after being promised certain things is really egregious and so that, I think, is part of what boiled over.”

Ortiz tells SFR the rally last Monday was not organized by any one group and the toppling of the obelisk was an “organic moment.” She points out that while the statue did honor Union soldiers who fought against the Confederates during the Civil War, those same Union soldiers were then used to massacre Native people across the West.

For Dwayne Trujillo, 51, who has been on the Hispanic Chamber’s board for about a year, the obelisk represented Hispanic culture and “the good, the bad and the ugly” parts of the state’s history. He understands that the words “Savage Indian,” which were inscribed on one of the plaques at the monument’s base, upset people, but he says he thinks there should have been a discussion.

“Maybe that means new monuments and that’s OK. Times change, history changes, and maybe that obelisk wasn’t the best representation of Santa Fe,” Trujillo tells SFR. “But as long as there is a dialogue for future monuments and what does that look like moving forward for Hispanic people and for Native Americans as well?”

James Borrego, 69, Hispanic Chamber board member and owner of Borrego Construction, is simply upset about the destruction of the monument.

“There’s always going to be conflict with an outsider coming into your perceived land, your nation, and changes are always hard to deal with, but the bottom line is that the Native Americans, Hispanics coexisted for 300 years,” Borrego tells SFR. “Because of the national dialog of Black Lives Matter and everybody else, it has inflamed this racial tension.”

Another young chamber member, board President David Fresquez, 34, says that he grew up in Santa Fe seeing the Hispanic and Native American cultures mix downtown, so the destruction of the obelisk mostly made him sad.

“I think we have to be extremely sensitive to people’s feelings but that doesn’t equal destroying property. That usually equals thoughtful communication and bringing people together,” Fresquez says.

“So I guess my question to [the activists] is, what exactly does it solve?”

New Mexico’s fledgling hemp industry might fall behind if the state and federal government don’t catch up

he 2 million hemp plants waving in a field outside Moriarty under the September sun weren’t part of the

plan.

But when nature does its work and seedlings show up on the job, farmers go with it.

At least these farmers did.

Santa Fe Farms harvested hemp from more than 130 acres and 17,000 square feet of greenhouses this fall, including this “naturally planted” land in the Estancia Valley where seeds fell from the previous year’s mature buds. The crop is soon heading for markets that range from high-end smokeables in its topmost flowers to oil ex-

tracted from nearly the entire plant.

New Mexico entered the hemp industry last year on the heels of the 2018 federal Farm Bill that legalized cultivation of certain cannabis plants. Santa Fe Farms represents what backers hope will become a major contributor to the state’s economy.

Yet, the course for a budding empire is far from charted. Federal and state regulators are grappling with rules that have everyone with a stake in the industry on edge, and though New Mexico’s approach is largely praised, conflicts are at play here between the low-THC hemp program and its cousins in medical cannabis which have led to a lawsuit. Which growers and manu-

facturers survive depends on their abilities to respond to the market, control their harvests through to the consumer and form alliances among people who have farming skills, cannabis connections and business acumen.

Cole Daeschel and Gary Chavez are looking forward to a few snowboarding breaks come winter, but they’ve been laboring practically nonstop on their Santa Fe Farms project for the better part of two years. Like every other hemp producer in the state, the pair had to move from zero quickly. The growers, both Santa Fe natives, are now executive board members of the company that is poised to be an early big player with business arms that include harvesting and processing for other growers as well as their own large-scale production.

“People call it grassroots,” says Chavez, “but it’s more that it built into something that we had both aspired to but shied away from because of the risk involved.”

Daeschel’s father died suddenly in 2016, leaving behind Cedar Grove Nursery in Stanley that was a mainstay of the Santa Fe Farmers Market for flowers and vegetables. So, Daeschel, then 32, picked up the mantle. It wasn’t long before squash and peppers got boring, and he was looking for a chance to turn his knowledge of cannabis growing into a job.

Chavez, 29, trained in the Santa Fe Community College alternative energy and biofuels program and took a bevy of ag courses at New Mexico State University, plus earned some greenhouse experience at a medical operation.

While the two first aimed to get into the medical cannabis scene, they quickly realized the state didn’t have any plans to reopen applications for producers any time soon and the going rate to procure an existing license was in the $500,000 range.

“Then we caught wind of the Farm Bill and we switched gears and went into hemp,” Daeschel explains. Both smile widely.

The first winter was rough, but they are clearly proud to have spent it sleeping in the greenhouse feeding pellets into a wood stove and nursing hemp plants to life along with some stalwart friends. For six months, they stayed at it with no income.

The pair came close to partnering with a Colorado firm until a funny feeling about the deal caused them to hit the brakes. That’s when Daeshcel contacted money man Steven Gluckstern for advice.

Gluckstern didn’t know much about cannabis, but he knew about making a business work, and he saw in the young Santa Feans an opportunity he wouldn’t pass by.

business jargon and sometimes hyperbolic rattling off of numbers about efficient producing and processing—a cadence on a whole different level from the growers.

The venture needs all those elements to work. Daeschel and Chavez are executive board members and equals in a partnership of six that now includes Apodaca and other investors.

“We come from a place where everything gets corporatized…to grow to the level we want to go to, we have to get in bed with corporate folks and wealthy people, but we are going to hold to our values,” Chavez explains. “They let us do what we know how to do and they give us the tools we need to make this dream come true.”

In addition to upgrading the Santa Fe Farms machinery this fall, Apodaca and Gluckstern have been hitting the investors hard. They’ve scraped up what they say is

“We were originally going to start with a few acres. We were going to gradually work our way up, but Steven comes in and he’s like, ‘all right let’s do this.’ He started buying farms and it’s been trial by fire,” Daeschel says.

The volunteers that popped up in Moriarty were on a field the company leased after last year’s Colorado grower decided not to return. Plus, the growers hand transplanted more than a dozen other cultivars at two other plots in addition to two greenhouse locations.

This year, another high-profile entrepreneur also came on board, former gubernatorial candidate Jeff Apodaca, who had been operating a business that provided harvest, finishing and marketing services for hemp producers. His language is full of

$6 million and are working on another $25 million they plan to invest in a large facility for drying and processing hemp at the Mesa Del Sol development southwest of Albuquerque.

Apodaca already worked with farms around the state last year through a company he called Fathom. The merger with Santa Fe Farms just before harvest season upped its tonnage by 60%. At press time, the harvest total for the newly joined companies stood at 1.5 million pounds of biomass for oil extraction and 27,000 pounds of smokable flower from about 14 different growers.

Gluckstern’s first job was picking tobacco in Wisconsin and he never intended to get near a farm again. Now, though, he says it’s exciting. Coming from a guy who owned an NHL hockey team and helmed Warren Buffet’s reinsurance division, among other high profile banking, philanthropy and investment jobs, that’s a vote of confidence.

“For me, this represents a potential place for New Mexico to really cut its own future and, by the way, be a leader,” he says during an interview in the Moriarty field. He’s standing next to Apodaca among hemp stalks that are taller than their heads.

“The real key is no one uses this plant in this form. You can smoke the top, which is the only thing that people do naturally.

Everything else has to be transformed to something else. People are just figuring that out.”

The farm is surrounded by signs that read “This Field Contains Industrial Hemp” and “0% THC,” because to the uneducated eye, it might look like an easy haul of marijuana. For legit hemp farmers, there’s always the specter of gray areas within the law and from others who flout the laws. Navajo Nation officials are fac-

ing an obstacle, for example, with a tribal member who planted thousands of square feet of greenhouses of what he says is hemp but that others claim is actually black market, high-grade THC. Santa Fe Farms is already growing more than the entire nation did in 2014, when the Farm Bill first allowed limited hemp production for research. By 2019, when states that had been waiting for federal approval formally kicked off their programs, the number of acres had grown from 220 to 293,000.

The 2018 version of the Farm Bill defined hemp as a cannabis plant containing no more than .3% of the compound THC and removed it from the list of Schedule 1 controlled substances. Almost everyone admits that’s an arbitrary standard developed as part of a study in the ‘70s, yet it’s the level upon which there was enough political consensus for success. Rigid testing programs restrict the level of THC at harvest, and too much of the compound can lead to mandatory crop destruction.

There’s a movement underway to raise the limit (the psychoactive properties of THC not being discernable to most people until they reach about 7%), but unless that happens, the risk of a crop going “hot” with its naturally occurring chemicals remains a big gamble.

mits to growers to plant the crop. This year, just 282 sought the same permission, and even fewer made it to the still-ongoing harvest.

For many growers who stayed in the game, the idea of starting small stuck. Of the 169 outdoor growing permits granted this year, the average number of acres of hemp per grower is 12, for a statewide total of an estimated 2,037 acres.

North of Santa Fe, plastic tunnels in an acequia-fed fruit orchard also form the home base of High Grade Organic CBD, the state’s first certified organic hemp grower and manufacturer of hemp products. Soon, High Grade will claim another first: the premiere Santa Fe Farmers Market booth devoted solely to hemp.

Partners Christopher and Taylor Bassett and Daniel and Sasha Scharf sent their crop from roughly a half-acre to a Colorado extraction plant last year, trading in a 1,300-pound truckload of hemp biomass for six cases of Mason jars of processed oil that they turned into tincture and chocolate bars at a turnkey processing facility back in New Mexico.

Christopher Bassett is the lead grower, wedging cannabis next to cherry trees and between rows of melons. Farming always comes with risk, but jumping into hemp required taking on much more than just space on the farm.

“Having to take it like we have, being a grower and a manufacturer, that takes a special partnership to make that happen. In the farming industry a lot people don’t go that route. In the wine industry, it’s a staple of that, of estate-grown wines, but your carrot grower is not going to be your carrot juice seller, most likely,” Christopher Bassett says.

This year, they’re aiming to sell most of the crop as smokeable flower, which requires hand harvesting and curing, and which Scharf is responsible for keeping on the market.

Roundup fields and using tractors to harvest versus us being certified organic and hand done with super attention,” he says.

Hemp that’s destined for smoking versus a commercial manufacturing process seems to be emerging as a leading sector of the industry in Northern New Mexico.

Brad Lewis, program director for the agriculture department’s Agricultural and Environmental Services division, says that’s partly because the intensive niche crop is expected to have a stronger market than commercial mass-harvested biomass.

In 2019, the nation experienced the commercialization of hemp for the first time in a century.

“When USDA legalized hemp for those states that have legal laws for hemp, we saw producers react and produce large amounts of hemp, large acres in the country,” Lewis tells SFR. “The other half of it is the extraction and manufacturing remain primarily at that niche market area in there, so we had a backlog of hemp because there weren’t enough

extractors in the country to extract it.”

During this “glut period,” he says, the price of raw hemp took a dive, leading some growers to store their crop in the hopes of making it pay later. That experience is also among the reasons why fewer acres of hemp were planted by fewer New Mexico growers this year.

Cannabis plants in New Mexico are regulated by three cabinet level agencies.

Lewis’ team at the state Department of Agriculture controls hemp from seed to harvest; the New Mexico Environment Department issues permits for manufacturing and inspects products heading for sale; and the Department of Health oversees the licensure of growers, patients and dispensaries for the Medical Cannabis Program.

While the governor’s office controls all three, the health department has a handful of rules that growers say are seriously impeding the industry. Both the agriculture and environment departments say they need more resources and only made

it through the initial startup surge by cross-training some workers as inspectors for hemp and taking them away from other tasks.

Jonathan Gerhardt manages the food program for the environment department, which includes overseeing permits and regular inspections for over 7,000 businesses in the state and, for the last two years, he’s added hemp as a whole new side project.

But Gerhardt knows New Mexico is falling behind on the hemp program, holding back a critical area of adding value to the state economy. In the first year, the department approved 35 extraction and manufacturing facilities statewide and now has 24 applications pending, he explains. “We surged through that first nine months of applications, but it is just not maintainable. Unfortunately, what suffers is the turnaround time to get people up and operating and into this business and into this industry that they are eager to enter into.”

HEMPIRE positions and a state hiring freeze stand in the way of those potential businesses beginning operations.

“We are not able to process permits as quickly as we’d like to; we’re not able to educate the public or do as much outreach as we’d like to,” she says. “It’s a real challenge for us to manage this program without adequate fees or adequate general fund money.”

In addition, a gap in state law requires the department to tightly regulate testing of final consumer hemp products made in New Mexico to ensure appropriate labeling and safety, yet it has no jurisdiction over hemp products from other states that are sold here—a scenario that disadvantages local producers.

A different state law hurdle has Duke Rodriguez’s attention. As the state’s largest producer under the Medical Cannabis Program, his Ultra Health company was stoked about the potential of adding agricultural hemp. Cannabinoids such as CBD extracted from the plant are used in combination with regulated THC products to provide patients with desired formulas.

During the first year of legal cultivation for the low-THC hemp plants, the Department of Health created a rule barring medical producers not only from growing and using their own hemp, but also from buying other New Mexico-produced hemp for the same purpose.

“It was the real shocker,” Rodriguez tells SFR. “Ultra Health was in the practice…of buying finished biomass hemp from local New Mexico growers and then they came to us and said, ‘Are you going to buy from us today?’ and currently every producer is prohibited from buying hemp produced in New Mexico and using it in combination with our own products.”

In other words, you can buy a hemp cigarette at an Allsups, but a certified nonprofit producer of medical cannabis can’t buy the same hemp to add to medicine. To that end: Ultra Health and five other businesses, including producers and laboratories, have joined in a lawsuit against the state in an attempt to reverse the rule and address other problems they’ve identified.

The state regulation issues are compounded on Capitol Hill. A trio of agencies at the federal level will have a huge impact on the future of New Mexico’s—and the nation’s—hemp crops.

Though insiders debate the finer points of jurisdiction and legislative intent, most everyone agrees the federal government’s definition of hemp’s allowable THC level is the biggest hurdle to farmers and producers.

“Hemp is a farm product. That is victory,” says Doug Fine, a Mimbres-based

writer and cannabis entrepreneur. “The USDA, in crafting its regulations for hemp, is bound by an unworkable definition of hemp at .3% so that has to change at the federal level…or the industry can’t function. It’s too risky.”

Fine, who published a book this year on small-scale hemp production called American Hemp Farmer, says New Mexico’s rules pave the way for success, but can only go so far until the federal standards—from the Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)—make more sense. He sees the sharp drop in growers from the first year to the second as a natural phenomenon.

“We are such infants in this industry— we are midwives, pioneers—that looking at numbers now would be like judging Babe Ruth’s career based on his first two games of his first regular season. We are wise, I think, to not read too deeply into immediate metrics,” he says, adding later, “There was going to be a correction on that anyway, from people who just thought it was a magic pot of gold and an instant get rich quick scheme— grow a bunch of CBD and the world is going to shower money on you.”

Fine advocates for growers controlling the plant from seed through value-added products to the customer. While more

oil extractors are moving into the market, he says development of infrastructure in New Mexico to make use of the fiber components of the plant’s stalk could be feasible as soon as the state gets to about 3,100 acres of production.

Even if hemp occupied more than 3,000 acres of New Mexico soil, it would be a far cry from a major crop. For reference, about 9,100 acres of green chile were planted in 2019.

Yet, the CBD industry has gone nowhere but up in recent years. On the retail side, shopkeeper Gyana Basse is stocking goods from a number of New Mexico operations at her Hemp Apotheke on Rufina Circle and expects to soon launch her own line of skin care to go with a variety of health products she carries. Her husband Ralph Basse has manufactured body care products and essential oils through his Aromaland business for 35 years and now also produces a CBD line sold at Hemp Apotheke and elsewhere.

Gyana Basse opened the store in May 2018 and says at first it was “very tricky because there was no regulation,” yet after the federal and state laws went into play, “it very quickly got much easier.”

In addition to the popular tinctures and salves, her shelves also now include smokeables.

“That is turning out to be quite a big business,” she says, explaining her connection with local growers at Santa Fe CBD and showing off its deep-green manicured strain called “Hempress D.”

Just a few days earlier, Charlie Talachy crouched down next to a short, bushy hemp plant near Alcalde. The 31-year-old graduate of NMSU’s ag program and former medical cannabis worker founded Santa Fe CBD with his cousin Adam Valerio, 33. It’s a classic partnership wherein “one of them is papers and one of them is plants,” he says.

During the first year, the pair planted 2 acres of hemp on a 10-acre farm they leased in Hernandez. This season, they scaled way back, growing just 50 plants at Talachy’s home to develop seed stock while they continue to market bulk sales to retailers like Hemp Apotheke and Stag Tobacconist in Santa Fe and 420 Emporia in Española, along with their line of tinctures, muscle rub and prerolls from last year’s crop.

Part of the reason for the scaling back was the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on Talachy’s family. With two young daughters in remote learning rather than school, he has far less time to devote to the business. Next year, and in the future if the state allows more flexibility in cannabis plants with recreational adult use, he expects expansion—not just for their business but up and down the chain.

“New Mexico tends to be local proud…

It has potential to be so much for us, especially as a commodity in our state. We have so much agriable land that is not being used, traditional land that is not being used, especially around here, you can see all these parcels that are just used for grazing that have been fallow for years and years,” he says.

Chavez is thinking the same thing in Moriarty as he refines his skills on a tractor that’s more than twice the size of the one he’d been using until a day earlier. As the tractor munches through hemp plants like something out of Ferngully and shoots material into a waiting semi truck, he’s explaining why his heart is in the game.

“You have to be able to do it at scale.

The way I look at it is we are trying to marry regenerative ag, sustainable ag with conventional ag in a way that we can use implements like this for certain practices and we can still keep our craft and our boutique-style smokeable flower,” he says.

He’s quiet for a while, concentrating on all the points of contact he needs to monitor in the cab of the John Deere.

“I really want to try to bring back the education and the youth into farming if possible,” he pipes up, a pair of yellow Air Jordans tapping on the tractor floor. “A dream of mine is to get Nike or someone else to sponsor us and get us farm gear. I don’t care if it’s Carhartt. I wanted to play professional sports and I have never heard of a farm getting sponsored by Nike but I bet we could if we could get them material made from hemp. I am going to pull it off— that is my dream right there.”

“First of all, we’re working in the style of buffoonery,” Flax tells SFR of The King Without a Kingdom. “It’s a little-known western style that even predates commedia dell’arterte. It comes from medieval times, when in reality, not just in theater, people who were different were ostracized because people were afraid they were carrying evil spirits, so they were pushed out of the townships that were safe back then.”

Originally, the show was supposed to be a mostly-improvised and chaotic piece wherein buffoons took the stage, performing fairy tales and almost performing over each other. As the show has now moved over to a pre-recorded Vimeo space, Flax says each actor per-

formed their section in one take, improvising a learned tale and putting their own touches on the story. “[Buffoons] evolved into the king’s fool,” Flax continues. “They were some of the only ones who could whisper in the king’s ear and maybe speak truth to power; the style is also connected to Mardi Gras, when people thought if they welcomed buffoons into the town, they could scare off evil spirtis.”

The King Without A Kingdom will be available through the Theater Grottesco website for $10 starting Thursday, but before we forget—speaking truth to power? Scaring off evil? Buffoons? Does that mean this has anything to do with Trump and the election?

“We like to deal with metaphor and ambiguity,” Flax says, “but I guess we can admit it...it is indeed based on our president.”

What Are You Going to Do, America?

Reflections on historical trauma and healing

n Monday, Oct. 12, 2020— Indigenous Peoples Day—the obelisk at the center of the Santa Fe Plaza was reduced to a pile of rubble.

As is surely well known by now, the demolition occurred following days of escalating conflict between onlookers, a core group of determined Tewa women activists and police officers who, on Monday, eventually left the scene altogether. Afterwards, using tow ropes and chains, protesters pulled the monument down. I was present, and while I never entered the fray with the police officers, never wielded a chisel nor touched a rope, when the first segment of the obelisk collapsed, I cheered. When the next stone section plummeted, I cheered again.

I don’t apologize. I regard the action that occurred on that most apropos day to have been healing. Yes, many object to the obelisk’s dismantlement on the grounds of law, procedure and policy.

Many say conversations between the city and the activists should have continued. It’s too easy to point out how many historic civil rights actions—Rosa Parks not surrendering her bus seat, for example—violated legal policy, but it’s pertinent to point out that Mayor Alan Webber issued a statement in June promising the obelisk would be removed. He called it “the right thing to do.”

He spoke at an event on the Plaza, solidifying that promise.

But then Webber made no visible further efforts to carry through or reaffirm his commitment. He didn’t seek to clarify issues over who owned the obelisk with the Native Americans who regarded the structure to be a symbol of oppression. During this bizarre period of silence, tensions built.

And following an initial peaceful day of demonstrations beginning

Saturday, Oct. 10, Webber called in police to break up protesters on the night of Sunday, Oct. 11. A volatile conflict became an inevitability.

Now unfortunately, Webber has chosen to seek retribution by conspiring with the police to impose criminal penalties and seek “help rounding up people as we identity them.” This is a petty course of action that demeans the complexity of the situation. Criminalization perpetuates a cycle of repression, resentment

and acrimony, while an act of benevolence has the capacity to soothe these tensions.

Yes, I think the mayor should be a better statesman, be thankful no one was severely hurt, adopt a philosophical attitude and forgo all criminal penalties.

Besides, on a practical level, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men won’t put the obelisk together again. I encourage public officials to remember the spirit of Martin Luther King. If it seems odd to call on MLK in association with property destruction, check the record. You’ll find that while King opposed destruction, he also opposed weighting rioters with criminal penalties and blame.

King called the prevalent rioting in the late ’60s “at bottom, a reaction to the reluctance of white power to make the kind of changes necessary to make justice a reality.” He deemed rioting “the language of the unheard.” The protesters who toppled the obelisk made legitimate efforts to speak their cause via peaceful protest for years. They’d been promised results.

Native Americans instead received nonchalance, dithering and inaction. They were silenced, compounding hundreds of years of silencing.

Which brings me to the subject of healing. For me, a Black American, healing entails understanding a phenomenon which has been called “social death,” in which entire communities feel negated.

It is the collective weight of whole populations having been rendered voiceless.

Social death also describes an impact that lasts for generations whenever another innocent victim, say, George Floyd, dies, because so many others have died for reasons along the same lines, under similar circumstances. Each time it happens, the

marginalized re-experience social negation, each time they die a little bit, too.

It is pernicious gap that precludes closure, both on the sociological level, and on a personal level. I might read an article attempting to blame Tamir Rice, Eric Garner or Breonna Taylor for their own deaths. I might get into an argument over how much blame lay with the victims rather than the police officers who have not been prosecuted. These daily slights revive feelings of social death.

It has always been ironic to me that movements, such as #MeToo, Black Lives Matter or Native American activism are simplistically associated with violence or extremism. These movements are primarily about healing. They seek criminal justice reforms, identify sexual predators and protest hurtful monuments because these movements refuse to accept that trauma will be an inevitable aspect of daily life.

There is very little worse that Webber could have done from the vantage point of healing historical trauma and social negation than to have extended a boon only to inexplicably snatch it away.

I don’t believe the tragedy on Indigenous Peoples Day 2020 was the property destruction—the tragedy was that public officials did not use the day to apologize for decades of failure to legally erase the words “Savage Indians” from one of the obelisk’s plaques (something which also had to be accomplished by community vandalism in the 1970s) and to sponsor a respectful removal accompanied by speeches encouraging all Santa Feans to appreciate the justice and inevitability of such an action, one made while hopefully looking toward the future. Sad that we’ll never know how that might have been, but healing and reconciliation tomorrow hinges on empathy and understanding today.

Opuntia’s new second-story Railyard location hits all the right notes

Jeanna Gienke and Todd Spitzer say they’re close to reopening their restaurant, Opuntia.

Opuntia co-owner Jeanna Gienke shouts from the second story balcony to a friend on the Railyard street below. Said friend is asking about Gienke and partner Todd Spitzer’s timeline for re-opening the restaurant. I’ve just learned they’re aiming for sometime this week, maybe next week. “We’ll talk soon,” Gienke shouts down.

On this particular day, at mid-morning, the outdoor scene is one of crisp and refreshing coolness. The sun shines, the mountains carve the horizon in the distance, and though visibly tired, Gienke and Spitzer exude a certain sense of satisfaction. They’re nearing the finish line after months and untold hours of work.

It’s been nearly a year since Opuntia (1607 Alcaldesa St., upstairs, 7805796) as we know it has existed. After leaving their original location in the Baca Street Railyard (Cafecito now occupies the building) in search of a larger floor plan, Gienke and Spitzer briefly ran a temp Opuntia in

an adorable and welcoming tent-like space in the courtyard of the El Rey Court. But they’ve had their eye on the sprawling spot that once housed the mythical Railyard bowling alley even longer than you’d think.

They were, in fact, barreling down on a much earlier opening date.

“We wanted to open by April 15,” Spitzer tells SFR. “We wanted to open sooner—that was the original goal, with Bosque Brewing and some other businesses all trying to open at the same time—but we had to gut [the space]…”

“And then COVID hit,” Gienke interjects. “The whole collective slow-down… there was kind of a reconfiguring of timelines, we slowed down. But Todd and I are pretty DIY people and ended up doing a lot of the construction ourselves. If anything, I think we’ve really learned how to adapt.”

Spitzer says the extra time allowed him and Gienke to take stock of what they really wanted to present aesthetically. Without a construction crew to worry about, they began adding touches that are sure to make a big impact.

The new Opuntia, for example, boasts a koi pond in the center of the room. Spiraling

out from there are dozens of plants curated

by Gienke and sold through the business.

In the previous location, space was at a premium—at the new Opuntia, Gienke can offer a wider array of flora from all sizes and price points. Seating areas dot the room, in open spots for extroverts and, according to Gienke, a row of booths for introverts, all closed off from one another and featuring light boxes installed against the wall that frame outdoor shots (think trees) by local photographer Janet Russek. The effect creates faux windows, as it’s one of the only walls at Opuntia without them, and that is both clever and sure to be appreciated by folks who like dining incognito without giving up light.

The menu, meanwhile, is still being developed in-house by Spitzer and longtime Opuntia collaborator Kim Müeller, formerly of Izanami, to take advantage of the larger kitchen space.

“We’re starting off with the hits off the original menu, and we’re starting limited,” Spitzer says, explaining that offering a robust but well-packaged to-go program is of the utmost importance right now. “Kim has designed an expanded dinner menu, though, because we’re in an actual kitcken now, so we’ll have more bowls—like, we’re adding a Middle Eastern bowl—and things like falafel and kebabs. We’ll be baking our own bread from scratch.”

“Our toast will be over the top,” Gienke adds with a laugh.

“Then for dinner, we’ll have more dinner-type entrees,” Spitzer continues. “Flat breads and all sort of goodies.

Same concept, but expanded, and still affordable.”

Gienke and Spitzer also brought back pastry chef Kim Frick for a wider array of dessert options. The menu hasn’t been

nailed down completely just yet, but we can reportedly expect another greatest hits list as well as some creative entries like a macha tea cake or Earl Grey tea cake that are sure to evolve over time.

“We never really had the equipment to let her show off,” Gienke explains, “and we’re excited for the tea-inspired desserts.”

Opuntia’s tea selection is still under review as well, but Spitzer says the list will be broad without becoming overwhelming.

Same goes for coffee. Spitzer sprang for a Modbar in-counter espresso machine, which is operated with what looks like a super computer just below its nozzles.

“It’s pretty ridicuous,” he says jokingly, “but we have really amazing baristas, and they’ll have really amazing equipment.”

Most of those will be rehired, by the way, as will the original kitchen staff (Full disclosure: my brother has worked for Opuntia off and on for some time). Given COVID-19, Gienke says, it was important to stay faithful to workers who’ve stood by the restaurant, especially during the transition between buildings. This will possibly even include a bicycle delivery person (I saw the bike—it’s awesome), but Gienke says she likes to “imagine friends meeting in the Railyard and us bringing them down food.”

With a redesigned to-go program created to cut down on waste and also keep the food as hot and presentable as possible, though, you won’t necessarily have to sit in the Railyard to expect a fresh meal. Still, the new Opuntia feels like a turning point for the downtown public plaza. Second Street Brewery and the temporarily closed Violet Crown Cinema have long anchored the gathering space, but with Bosque Brewing open and the upcoming inaugural day for Opuntia, it’s finally becoming what it was envisioned to be all along.

“We like to think it’s like throwing a party and inviting everybody,” Gienke says, pointing out COVID-Safe Practices will be staunchly observed. “Watch our Facebook page for announcement. Find us upstairs.

It’s only slightly odd for Talking Heads front man David Byrne to claim his 2019 Broadway show, American Utopia, is merely based on the album and tour of the same name—it’s pretty much a concert. In fact, it absolutely is a concert (witty banter betwixt songs included). But rather than re-performing the live show he’d toured and call it a day, Byrne does his fans and newcomers a solid by assembling one of the greatest international bands of all time, tossing it onto a minimal stage to play a combo of new songs and hits and then hiring Spike Lee to direct the thing.

It’s borderline magical (and will be to many) and does that super-fun up-close-and-personal thing that seems to grow more popular the longer we’re pandemic-ing. But Utopia doesn’t quite reach the Elysian heights you maybe expected or heard about from Byrne’s legions of adorers. Love him or like him, though, you’ll never mistake his style for someone else’s. Plus, the man’s got jams.

What else could you want from one of the most seminal songwriters of our time and the creator behind 1984’s Stop Making Sense, arguably the single greatest contemporary music movie?

A CALL TO SPY

+ AMAZING WOMEN - STRANGE PACING; NOT ENOUGH NOOR KHAN

So, circa-1940, right about after the time Hitler traipsed into France to declare “Yeah, this is all mine now,” Britain’s Special Operations Executive (kind of like their CIA) was like, “Hey, you know what? The world’s super-misogynist, so if we trained some women how to do spy stuff, they could probably operate in France without calling a lot of attention to themselves!”

And so they did. It’s a rather fascinating and thrilling bit of history told in great detail by filmmaker Lydia Dean Pilcher (Radium Girls) in A Call to Spy, one of the deeper non-documentary dives into the subject.

Recruiting from various military branches, secretarial pools, diplomatic administrators and the like, the SOE’s Vera Atkins (Castle’s Stana Katic) cobbles together a small batch of the first lady spies, sends them into Lyon and pretty much turns the tide of things for both the war and women forever. And though the film claims inspiration from numerous lady spies of the day, it mainly focuses on the efforts of the American Virginia Hall (spy name Bridgette, eventually the first woman agent of the CIA and played by Sarah Megan Thomas, who also produces here) and England’s Noor Inayat

8 + BYRNE RULES; THE MUSIC, DUH - COULD HAVE GONE DEEPER

Here, however, Byrne plumbs the depths of his psyche in a way that feels more vulnerable than ever. Rampant throughout Utopia are thought pieces on a house vs. a home, Byrne’s relationship to brains and their chemistry (he’s famously autistic) and some pretty sweet if restrained and simplistic dance moves choreographed by Annie-B Parson.

The highlight, though, comes with Byrne’s cover of Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout,” wherein his ragtag band of singers, dancers, percussionists and rhythm-ers implore the audience to consider the countless Black Americans killed across time. “Say her name,” they command, or “say his name. Say their name.” Sandra Bland.

Ahmaud Arbery. Emmett Till. It’s a powerful tribute and an example of an artist using their

Khan (spy name Madeline, England’s first-ever wireless operator, female Muslim war hero and literal Indian royalty/descendent of Tipu Sultan; Radhika Apte).

It’s disappointing the bulk of the film goes to Hall’s exploits given Khan’s pedigree and resume and Atkins’ overarching war efforts, though the American certainly spent more time in the field bombing trains and busting resistance members out of jail and doing other things that are probably more exciting for film. Thomas brings a quiet dignity to the role and achieves more with a simple expression than seems possible.

Apte, on the other hand, does what she can with less screen time and would-be inspiring lines like “I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing!” that tiptoe up to ham-fisted but make a certain kind of sense given the real-life woman’s obvious dedication (she apparently never spilled a secret after being captured by Nazis). Atkins cuts an intriguing story as well, a Romanian Jew repeatedly denied British citizenship despite her innumerable contributions to the liberation of France and Europe at large. She, too, gets fewer minutes than Hall, which becomes another disappointment given Katic’s bubbling rage and hard-won heartache in the face of duty and something larger than herself.

Pity, then, that the overall feel of the film is that of a BBC miniseries. It certainly tracks

platform for good. It also strikes a somber tone without keeping us there for good; the in-film audience, who danced in the aisles mere moments earlier, sits at attention while family members of the slain hold up large scale photos offstage. It’s chilling, but vital and hopefully reaches someone, especially as we barrel toward the election.

It also solidifies Byrne’s reputation as enduringly relevant, and though it might have been nice to get a little more insight into the nuts and bolts of the songs or even just the performance itself, folks will be talking about this one. As well they should.

that Pilcher is trying to pack a lot of story into a brief couple hours, but some scenes feel unnecessary or burdensome, others too brief. Those who didn’t know should take notice, however, particularly misogynists and closeted fascists.

There was a time when the globe united over things like this, and unsurprisingly, women led the way in with more important actions than we realize. Invaluable history lesson? No question.

When the Metropolitan Museum of Art aimed to throw a party in New York along with the opening of an exhibition on visitors to Versailles between 1682 and 1789, its live arts department met the challenge with an obvious center point: cake.

The department, part of the 2,000-person workforce that runs The Met, typically works with artists including dancers and musicians, but this time the artists were culinary performers who use sugar as their medium.

Celebrated London chef Yotam Ottolenghi invites five others to create works and desserts for

the 2018 opening, and Director Laura Gabbert, who brought the world onto the plate of late LA Times food critic Jonathan Gold in City of Gold, cooks up the same success here, combining the stories of the food with the stories of the people who make and eat it.

Before he became a pastry chef, cookbook author and overall food phenom Ottolenghi, who hails from the Jewish side of Jerusalem, was first a scholar of philosophy and art. He trolled Instagram to seek out the chefs he thought were creating cakes in the spirit of Versailles in its heyday, a showplace of the progress of technology, and the pinnacle of European art and culture.

Cakes themselves, he notes, were a technological breakthrough of the time, bringing together the chemistry of refined sugar and cream into a transformative delight.

We learned an immense amount during the piece. For example, Marie Antoinette probably never said “Let them eat cake,” but it was among the sentiments used to vilify her and the rest of the monarchy culture in the face of widespread starvation and poverty among the people. Lest we forget: The golden age of Versailles ended in revolution that came from its polarization. Excess and opulence also means exclusion and envy.

You need not be a foodie nor a history buff to enjoy Cakes, but people with both interests undoubtedly will. (Julie Ann Grimm)
