Thanks for that excellent article and lessons learned from the Medio Fire. We certainly do need to listen to our professionals and trusted wildfire management specialists when it comes to prescribed burns and forest thinning operations. These forest management operations have proven, here and around the world, to effectively combat the ecological devastation as well as human and wildlife misery that major wildfires can bring. As you nicely point out, wildfire management plans can often be thwarted by public opinion. From my own experience at developing wildfire management projects around the world, single issue laymen, expressing simplistic objections, filing lawsuits and asking for expensive and time consuming environmental impact statements is simply another way to tie the forest service up in knots and delay needed preventive action on a more timely and cost-effective basis. My advice for these “passionate defenders of forests”: hike around the Santa Fe National Forest to see the massive dead and down timber ready to act as super-sized kindling for a most destructive wildfire. Then, ask yourself, would you rather efficiently take a few preventive steps to keep our forests regenerative and safe, or take the risk of losing it to wildfires?

I was excited to read your article several weeks ago about Santa Fe’s historical buildings, particularly the section about the White Building on McKenzie Street because I live nearby and walk past often.

I’d always wondered what this building was about, because I’ve only ever seen it under renovation. So thank you for illuminating its history.

However, I have one caveat with your article, which is why I’m writing to you today.

“Tragedy struck again a few years later when Angelina was murdered. A Black man was sentenced to death for the crime, though evidence against him was thin. The true killer may have been Angelina’s uncle, who, rumor has it, confessed to the murder on his deathbed.” I was disappointed to not have the name of the Black man who was framed for this murder, especially in this time of racial reconing and healing. At first I thought the name might be lost to history, but I was even more disappointed to find it a short Google search away. An opportunity for this community to remember a name, a tragedy that took two innocent lives, to speak them all aloud, was missed.

His name was Thomas Johnson.

Mail in your ballot ASAP Legally you have until Oct. 20 to request an absentee ballot, and you have until Election Day on Nov. 3 to turn it in. However, Curtas says you should put your ballot in the mail no later than Oct. 27 to make sure it arrives at the County Clerk’s office in time. Even if your ballot is postmarked before Election Day, it must be received by 7pm on Nov. 3 or it won’t count. The postage for your ballot is prepaid.

Make sure you read all the directions on the ballot and fill it out correctly. If an election worker finds a problem with your ballot they are required to notify you within 24 hours.

You will have until Election Day to prove your identity and correct mistakes such as a mismatched signature—another reason to get your ballot in early.

If you haven’t mailed in your ballot by Oct. 27, you should deliver it in person to the County Clerk’s office or to your polling location.

Santa Fe County preparing for nearly 40% of voters to cast absentee ballots

f you’ve requested an absentee ballot, now’s the time to start checking the mailbox. A Santa Fe County Clerk contractor started mailing absentee ballots out on Tuesday, the same day in-person, early voting began.

Despite national anxieties about absentee voting, local officials say New Mexico is among the states best prepared to deal with the influx of mail-in ballots in coming weeks.

“People should feel confident in whichever way they choose to vote,” says Alex Curtas, a spokesman for Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver.

Curtas says the state uses a paper balloting system, does not connect ballot counting machines to the internet and protects all election offices with hightech cyber security software to reduce the chances of hacking and digital election fraud. The state conducts post-election audits to make sure that ballots were counted correctly.

Various systems track whether a person has voted twice, has duplicate voter registrations on file or is registered to vote in another state.

Curtas acknowledges that many county clerks’ offices were overwhelmed by the “massive influx” of absentee ballots for the June primary elections, but that counties have hired additional staff and are “in a pretty good place in terms of poll workers” this time around. He says an application form for positions across the state received over 3,000 responses.

have already requested absentee ballots and plan to drop them off at the County Clerk’s office rather than return them by mail.

“We usually vote like this,” she tells SFR. “We just hope everybody is gonna get out to cast their votes and that their votes are going to be tallied.”

Santa Fe County Clerk Geraldine Salazar has spent weeks preparing, telling SFR that it’s been “one of the busiest times” of her life. She’s hired nine extra election workers to process data and 30 Absentee Canvass Board members to begin counting absentee ballots 14 days before the official Election Day, which is Nov. 3.

She’s also increased the number of workstations allotted to the board for the absentee ballot adjudication process.

In New Mexico, as around the country, an unprecedented number of voters are expected to cast their ballots by mail in this election as public health threats from COVID-19 remain. Statewide, 24% of registered voters have requested absentee ballots.

In Santa Fe, the numbers are even

higher—40,259 people, or 38% of registered voters in the county have requested absentee ballots.

By comparison, just 8% of votes in Santa Fe County and 9% statewide were cast by absentee ballot in the 2016 general election.

Fears about voting by absentee ballot were exacerbated earlier this season by questions about the US Postal Service’s ability to handle the influx in election mail and, more recently, by President Trump’s unfounded claims that the increase in absentee ballots will lead to large scale election fraud.

Election laws (which vary from state to state) are being challenged in courts across the country, but there are no pending lawsuits in New Mexico, says Curtas.

Salazar and Curtas say voter fraud is not a significant issue, and say the mail system in New Mexico is capable of handling the volume of ballots, especially if people send them in early. The most pressing concern, they say, is how quickly election workers will be able to process ballots.

“Generally speaking, and historically, voter fraud is such a small percentage;

If you have already requested an absentee ballot, you can still choose to vote early in person if you sign an affidavit stating that you did not use your absentee ballot and that you have only voted once.

Early voting began at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center office on Tuesday. Alternative early voting locations will open Oct. 17.

Track your ballot The state has issued “intelligent mail barcodes” on all ballots that allow you to track them on the secretary of state’s website. You can see when you submitted your application, when the clerk mailed the ballot, and when it was received.

T

he Gila River, as it runs out of the Mogollon Mountains in southwestern New Mexico, typically isn’t a large river. Where it pours out of the Gila Wilderness, upstream of the towns of Cliff and Gila, it’s the kind of river where kids can splash around on a hot summer day. A place to submerge in the oh-soclear water and kiss someone for the very first time. To look for fish, to float and dream and stare up at the leaves and sky.

But when storms set loose the Gila, it becomes an entirely different species, ripping up 80-yearold cottonwoods and sycamores, wedging them into 20-foot-tall piles that reshape the floodplain.

It tears out bridges and culverts, lays waste to anything in its path.

That’s because in New Mexico, the Upper Gila isn’t dammed, though irrigators do siphon off water for farms. Then, downstream, the hard-working river typically dries up long before meeting the Colorado River near Yuma, Arizona.

The Gila is also a river that most New Mexicans have probably never visited, but in the past decade have developed fond feelings and fiery opinions for, all because of a federal subsidy that sent a small confederation of state and local officials scrambling to build a diversion there.

“It’s discouraging,” the late Dutch Salmon told me in 2016, two years after the state voted to build a structure to suck water from the river.

“It seems to me, the project is as egregious as it is implausible.”

At that time, Dutch couldn’t imagine the proposal standing up to scrutiny. Under the National Environmental Policy Act, agencies need to study the environmental and economic impacts of a project. “I don’t see it going

through the NEPA process and surviving,” he said.

Dutch was right, in a way. After five years and millions of dollars, proponents never came up with a plan solid enough for study. And the weight of the project collapsed in on itself.

With no plans in place, support from the federal government evaporated. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, acting on a campaign pledge, vetoed spending on the project. And this year, the new members of a state commission voted to end work on studies for the diversion.

Now, it’s dead in the water.

When it comes to the Gila, there’s a very long story.

I’ll skip the US Supreme Court battles and details from the early to mid-20th century and jump to the 2000s, when Arizona was settling water rights with the Gila River Indian Community.

To do so, it needed federal money and support from New Mexico Sens. Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman. When Congress passed the Arizona Water Settlements Act of 2004, it also allowed New Mexico to take advantage of some long-promised water rights on the Gila and its tributary, the San Francisco. (Long-promised meaning that in the 1960s, when Arizona needed Congress to pass the Central Arizona Project Act, New Mexico’s then-State Engineer Steve Reynolds squeezed extra water rights for the state out of those negotiations.)

But those water rights came with a catch: New Mexico didn’t own them outright and couldn’t just pull water from the river and pour it onto fields or through pipes. Instead we needed a downstream partner willing to trade.

And the 2004 law finally set that up: Upstream, New Mexicans could draw that water out of the Gila, and then pay an exchange fee to the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, which would use that money to buy Colorado River water.

Complicated, right? But there is one very important thing to remember: The law came with a pile of federal cash.

ecutive director Allyson Siwik, recalling when she and a few others in Silver City first heard about the proposed legislation and appropriation in 2003. “All the iterations before—Hooker, Connor, Mangas—none of those came with any money.”

Decades earlier, the federal government had proposed three different dams on the Gila.

“That was always the big deal, no one actually had the money to construct the project, it was just too expensive,” she says. This time would be different, though: “If there’s money for it, obviously there’s going to be a huge incentive and a huge drive to get the diversion built.”

GRIP, the Upper Gila Watershed Alliance, and the Center for Biological Diversity decided then, Siwik says, to put some renewed muscle behind the Gila Conservation Coalition, a loose group of volunteers Dutch had assembled in 1984 to fight Connor Dam. They started applying for grants, researching, recruiting volunteers, contacting technical experts and attorneys, and pushing back against the rhetoric coming from one particular New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission employee, Craig Roepke, for whom the diversion seemed like a personal crusade.

After Congress adopted the law, Siwik says Roepke and other state officials immediately pounded the pavement in southwestern New Mexico, rallying support for a diversion. The 2004 appropriation made it clear that building a diversion was just one option for the state to meet water needs in four southwestern counties: Catron, Grant, Hidalgo and Luna. But the federal subsidy was structured in a way that New Mexico would receive more money if it decided to build a diversion on the Gila—roughly $100 million versus $66 million.

For years, through the administrations of Governors Bill Richardson and Susana Martinez, the Gila Conservation Coalition, along with groups like Conservation Voters New Mexico, battled for a seat at the table in discussions and a say in the Legislature on spending. The allowance of public participation by the state waxed and waned, but by 2011, Siwik says more and more people were involved. And not just activists or environmentalists.

life in the four-county area were joining the process.

“Then Martinez came in and completely threw out the multi-stakeholder process Richardson had set up,” she says. “[Roepke] was basically in charge and set up a very top-down process.”

The state had encouraged cities, irrigators—any stakeholders in the region— to propose projects addressing water needs. These included not just diversion proposals, but municipal water conservation programs, irrigation efficiency projects, and even forest and watershed restoration projects.

A tenth of one of the pots of federal money went toward those non-diversion projects—and then in 2014, the Interstate Stream Commission voted to approve a diversion, estimated at that time to cost over $1 billion.

At the meeting in Albuquerque, when commissioners made their plans official, Dutch was disappointed but not surprised.

At the time, he told me, “We just got nine misguided individuals [on the commission] and we’ll hope to educate them better in the coming months and years ahead.

I don’t have any doubts about what will prevail in the end and keep our river as we’ve known it to be.”

By then, Dutch’s battle with Parkinson’s was noticeable. But he still sparked with the energy of the man who 30 years earlier had set off on a 200-mile trip down

the Gila to draw attention to the travesty of the proposed Connor Dam. In a cheap Pullman canoe, Dutch brought along his dog and a black-and-white cat.

The trip started off in the pines and mountains and ended up in the Sonoran desert. In New Mexico’s upper stretches of the river, he told me, there’s tremendous diversity. “It’s probably the only place in the country you can see an elk and a coatimundi in the same day,” he said. “Or catch a wild trout and a flathead catfish out of the same pool.” He taught his son to fly fish in the Gila National Forest and spoke with pride of the boy tracking down a mule deer buck by himself at age 16.

An avid fisherman, hunter, writer and a self-described “redneck environmentalist,” Dutch had served on the Interstate Stream Commission himself, as well as the Game Commission. He was friends with ranchers and farmers, environmentalists and hippies.

At every meeting I attended over the years, Dutch was there, reassuring people not to worry about the fate of the Gila River. At the time, I assumed he was giving me requisite sound bites for coverage of the battle.

Now, I understand better he was just clear in his vision.

“I don’t think ‘discouraged’ is a word I would ever use about Dutch, in anything he did,” says his wife Cherie Salmon.

Gaume became a key opponent of the project, lending his technical expertise, filing Open Meetings Act lawsuits for transparency violations, pointing out that most years, the Gila didn’t have water to spare—and local irrigators already weren’t using all the water they had rights to. With his sheets of analysis and memos, and his engineering background, it’s fair to say that Gaume was the most painful and persistent of burrs between the toes of project proponents.

But the state started spending that federal money, mostly on engineering firms and attorneys. In 2015, it also created the New Mexico Central Arizona Project Entity, a group of counties, towns, and irrigation districts tasked with planning and building the diversion and reimbursing the federal government for its

operation, maintenance and repair costs.

Dutch, Siwik, Gaume and many, many others kept showing up to public meetings, working on analyses and building more alliances. State legislators including Sens. Peter Wirth and Howie Morales introduced bills to rein in spending, increase transparency, spend the money on non-diversion projects and impose oversight. But year after year, the Legislature failed to pass those bills.

The CAP Entity did scale back the billion-dollar pipedream. But it never came up with a fully developed plan, even though its members really wanted one.

And even though the state spent $17 million of that federal subsidy.

There were a few controls built into the process: Under the terms of the Arizona Water Settlements Act, New Mexico had five years to come up with a plan for the diversion that would also give the Bureau of Reclamation time for en-

vironmental and economic studies. New Mexico could ask for an extension, but only if it showed it wasn’t responsible for the planning delays.

But when the time came in 2019 for the CAP Entity to submit its plans to the federal government, instead it asked for an extension.

Not only did US Department of the Interior Secretary David Bernhardt reject that request, the Bureau of Reclamation composed a 23-page memo laying out all the CAP Entity’s delays and changes, the “insufficient information” it provided and the “missing and unknown project details.”

On the state side, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham line-item vetoed nearly $1.7 million in New Mexico Unit funding for the diversion that year. And in June 2020, the Interstate Stream Commission voted to end funding for the diversion’s environmental studies.

Senator Wirth has served in the Legislature for 16 years, and discussions over the Gila have spanned his entire tenure. “It’s tragic that huge bucket of money has gone toward engineering that didn’t work, a whole bunch of legal fees, consultants,” he says. Instead money could have gone to water projects the state already needs to fund: “It was a lost opportunity.”

Now, it’s important to stay focused on funding non-diversion projects that meet the needs of people in those four counties. Doing so could provide a roadmap for the future. Building dams or trying to “engineer” a way out of water challenges is an outdated way of looking at water planning, when compared with efficiency, conservation and protecting forests and rivers themselves.

“It’s been an incredible journey and it’s not over,” Wirth says. “There’s still a bucket of money sitting there to spend, and it’s time to put that money to work on non-diversion projects and then move on to the next challenge.”

“He’d shake hands, say ‘See you at the next meeting.’ He was not one to hold a grudge against someone who said something he didn’t agree with.” He also didn’t care if people disagreed with him.

“He didn’t want to change minds,” she says. “He just felt he was on the right side of the diversion issue, and he was going to fight til he got it done.”

Recently, I listened to an interview I recorded with Dutch in 2014. I’d asked if he was reluctant to share some of his best fishing spots—like in the Mogollon Box, a riparian canyon with both pine trees and desert plants. He agreed that was typically hard to do: “Except in the case of the Gila,” he said. “I’ll give up a few secrets if it will gain us a few converts.”

He went on to talk about the bass and catfish. Black hawks and vermillion flycatchers. “It’s just a lovely place to go—it’s not a designated wilderness, just a de facto wilderness—and it’s where they want to put the diversion,” he said. “It’s a jewel about to be protected or smashed, depending on who wins.”

I’ll always remember leaving a meeting in July 2014, walking out of the gymnasium of the Cliff School with him. The humid air crackled with the electricity of a brewing storm. About 100 people had been inside, listening to state officials talk about flow models and macroinvertebrates and Bureau of Reclamation analysts estimate how much diversion projects cost.

At the meeting that night, there were a lot of questions and not many answers.

But it was clear state officials like Roepke wanted the diversion built—and Bureau of Reclamation officials in their support role were providing analysis the state didn’t want to hear.

As Dutch and I stood at the edge of the darkening parking lot, he told me, “But don’t worry. We’ll get ’em.”

New Mexico Senators Push for Dutch Salmon Act

Now, with somewhere between $85-90 million left to spend, the state is faced with making new choices in southwestern New Mexico.

The Interstate Stream Commission is in dispute resolution with the CAP Entity over previous agreements, says commission Director Rolf Schmidt-Petersen. It is hammering out how to return funds and envisioning future expenditures; also it must modify past agreements to direct the entity to work on non-diversion projects.

Some members of the CAP Entity have said they’re unwilling to do so.

Schmidt-Petersen acknowledges that members are angry, and also that it was the state—the previous iteration of the Interstate Stream Commission—that directed the entity to work on a diversion to the exclusion of any other projects.

Once the conflicts have been resolved, Schmidt-Petersen says commissioners can start laying out criteria for new water projects in southwestern New Mexico. That’s not likely to happen until early next year, and he is hopeful the proposals that do come in will be for projects that are “shovel ready.”

Schmidt-Petersen, who took over as director of the Interstate Stream Commission during the Lujan Grisham administration, acknowledges the process has been divisive for a long time.

He has long known people on all sides of the issue, he says. “They really are leaders in their community, they’re successful in their community, and they’re trying to do the best that they can with the resources they have,” he says. “I see that with all of them, even if their focus is somewhat different.”

Now, everyone will have to come together to think about how to spend the remaining money and build water projects in the region that will serve the broader community.

Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich introduced the M.H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. “Dutch was a friend of mine, and a one-of-a-kind conservationist,” says Udall, adding that 35 years ago, Dutch recognized the value of the Gila watershed when he fought the proposed Connor Dam. “We certainly owe a debt of gratitude to him for his foresight and his vision and his tenacity.”

Under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, Congress created a system to protect rivers with “outstanding natural, cultural and recreational values.” In New Mexico, that already includes a stretch of the Rio Grande, as well as stretches of the East Fork of the Jemez River, the Pecos and the Chama.

Udall says backers convened a public comment period when working on the bill and ended up making changes to the original draft. “We worked with a strong grassroots alliance, and that allowed us to come up with something that I think is very strong,” Udall says. “And we’re going to do everything we can to look for

opportunities to pass this from now until the end of the year.”

The bill would protect stretches of the river in New Mexico from development and protect habitat for endangered species. It also protects continued uses like irrigating and grazing. It wouldn’t affect or amend the Arizona Water Settlement Act or change how people use their water rights or access their lands.

Speaking of the long-running controversy on the Gila, Udall says people need to talk to one another.

“By that, I mean coming to the table and actually talking with one another, doing active listening, where we’re trying to find out what the other person’s position is, where we’re trying to walk in the shoes of the people around the table who we may disagree with,” he says. “When we do that, we find ourselves reaching a point where we can find common ground.”

Unfortunately, some people today immediately want to avoid finding common ground.

“When it comes to these important issues—conservation issues, issues about the planet and climate change, all of these really big issues—it’s important that we utilize that approach of trying to work with each other and get ourselves in the mindset of, ‘We have issue here, let’s see if we can get a solution that works for everybody,’” he says. “You don’t always reach complete unanimity, but I think what we’ve done in this bill reached a really good place and it’s something that deserves to be passed.”

Udall is retiring from the Senate when his term ends this year, but he plans to keep working on this “wherever I am.”

“I love the Gila,” he says, “and I’m going to keep pushing.”

sidy will meet the greatest water needs in the four counties and benefit the greatest number of people.

“The CAP Entity wanted to spend all the money on a diversion to benefit a handful of irrigators, and not leave any money for the other projects, and that’s not fair,” she says. “We need some fairness in the process, and hopefully the ISC has heard that message from people.”

In some ways, the defeat of the diversion has amplified a certain amount of nastiness in the community—a divisiveness that Siwik says was fueled by Reopke and the Interstate Stream Commission when it was building support for diversion.

Environmental groups never sued to stop the project, though they showed up to meetings, lobbied state legislators and organized festivals. Despite the lack of any legal action—or even legislative success—project proponents often blamed “million-dollar environmentalists” for delays and problems.

For years, Siwik says proponents, including Roepke, perpetuated a narrative of fear and scarcity. Fear that Arizona would take New Mexico’s water. Fear that there wasn’t enough water to go around— even though population and demands for water in southwestern New Mexico are projected to decline.

At a recent CAP Entity meeting, after the Interstate Stream Commission voted

to end funding for the diversion’s environmental studies, one member called opponents an infection in the community that was spreading like a cancer.

Like many people these days—agog at the state of the country and how people treat one another—she seems unsure what to say.

“Talk about dehumanizing language, it’s so terrible,” she says. “Before, it seemed like that was just at the national level.” Over the past four years, tensions have grown worse locally, too. And she struggles with what it means to cooperate with people who don’t simply disagree or have different needs.

“For many years, we were trying to collaborate and cooperate, and then that ended when the Martinez administration came in [and ended the multi-stakeholder process,]” she says. “Personally, I feel like collaboration can work, but I don’t know….If you are calling your neighbor a cancer? Or an infection? That is not collaborative language.”

It’s been a long haul and it’s not yet over. “Now, we have more fights in terms of making sure our community gets taken care of and that we spend the money,” she says, adding that there’s even more at stake: “I hope we can salvage our democracy, I hope we can talk to one another.”

And, she says, “I just feel it at the bottom of my heart, that we have to save this river.”

Come Together Viet-Pueblo Dinner merges Vietnamese and Pueblo cuisine Chefs Ray Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo) and Hue-Chan Karels almost seem surprised that Indigenous and Vietnamese cuisines would mesh so well, but it turns out the similarities are many. Plus, as both are inventive culinary masterminds at Open Kitchen and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center respectively, learning to make the disparate styles harmonize has been an exciting challenge.

The upcoming Viet-Pueblo Dinner brings together Karels’ lifelong pursuit of keeping and sharing Vietnamese cooking traditions with Naranjo’s combination Cordon Bleu training and self-taught Indigenous culinary methodologies.

The result is a thrilling and creative prix fixe menu that starts with a vegetarian and gluten-free five spice popcorn and rice amuse, wends through Bánh Nam tamale style dumplings with shrimp and pork wrapped in banana leaves and blue corn tamales with agave-brined roasted turkey and pairs dishes like Cá Kho To (caramelized, braised sea bass) and Puebloan braised duck with wild plum and amaranth—and that’s not even mentioning the caramelized bananas in red chile and chocolate piñon sauce for dessert.

“I think it’s going to be such a mind-blowing meal,” Karels tells SFR. “We’re talking foods that are prepared very similarly, and the textures, the vi-

brancy of what we’re making…in essence, what is really wonderful is, for the Indigenous, it’s reclaiming, it’s reminding, it’s remaking; for the Vietnamese, we’ve been carrying these practices and foods around the world. It’s people holding onto their customs.”

For Naranjo, this means continuing his mission to reeducate the people of the Southwest about Indigenous food as anthropological powerhouse.

“Amaranth,” he says, “was the first crop outlawed by European settlers, and I find that I’m reteaching people. This is a food culture that hasn’t been practiced for 100 years, so some of it is revival.”

Both Karels and Naranjo say they start with traditional ingredients and approaches, setting the stage for familiar flavors they can then tweak.

perform those six stories on a large screen. The second room shows footage of the refugees themselves on individual monitors, responding to Breitz’ interview questions. Breitz, a South African artist, conceived the piece as a way to raise “questions around how and where our attention is focused,” by juxtaposing highly visible famous actors relaying stories told by people who might otherwise not be heard.

One of those interviewees, Luis Ernesto Nava Molero, fled Caracas, Venezuela and was granted asylum in New York in 2005. A political scientist and academic in Venezuela, Molero also faced persecution and suffered physical violence because he was gay and openly critical of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez.

Today, Molero lives in New York and works as an activist in the LGBTQ+ community. He visited Santa Fe and the SITE show last week with his partner and his two children. He told me had taken his children to see the Rio Grande and Diablo Canyon and talked to them about all the immigrants whose journeys require hard physical passage on foot into the US. “They are lucky,” he said of his children’s emigration here. “I was lucky too.”

Still, he acknowledged, no matter how one arrives in one’s new home, the transition is always hard.

“When I moved to the US, it was a very difficult time for me because I left everything I have,” he said. “I became invisible, nobody cares about you; you are just an immigrant…Nobody is an immigrant just for fun.”

n mid-September, the New York Times and ProPublica partnered on a data-driven multi-media investigation charting the inevitable world migration patterns expected in the coming decades as a result of climate change. The project’s first component focused on Central America, forecasting more than 30 million migrants will head toward the US border over the next three decades. The series’ second installation brought the question home and was narratively grounded in a summer of rising temperatures, increasing drought and rampant wildfires. That story estimates at least 28 million Americans will probably confront mega-fires by 2070, and points toward a 2017 Nature study that calculates some of the migratory implications for the 180 million people living in areas at risk from rising sea levels.

The series reified the tension I’d experienced watching, on various screens from my stay-at-home couch, the summer’s devastation out in the world: scorched earth, masked evacuees, smoke-choked skies. Visceral and immediate, yet somehow unimaginable at the same time.

As a concept, physical displacement carries particular universal resonance.

Whether one finds Maslow’s hierarchy of needs particularly useful, grouping shelter under the category of fundamental human exigencies seems inarguable. Yet

while human migration may be quantifiable, the toll of individual displacement becomes incalculable when it allows for the full breadth of human experience.

SITE Santa Fe’s current exhibition, DISPLACED—which focuses on refugees unsettled by conflict or persecution— provides myriad points of reference into the refugee crisis, and does so in part by reverse-engineering the cataclysm, so the internality of experience cuts through the problematic amalgamation engendered by the soaring figures. Ten international artists working in a variety of media—video, photography, sculpture and more—unspool migration under strife from historical, theoretical and speculative angles.

SITE’s Phillips Director and Chief Curator Irene Hofmann and Assistant Curator Brandee Caoba began working on the exhibition in 2018, and it originally was scheduled to open last March.

Certainly, the topic has only grown in relevance and the show in its totality captures that vastness, while individual pieces home in on concrete narratives and images. Irish photographer Richard Mosse’s stunning and devastating images shot using thermal surveillance camera technology capture encampments across Europe—such as a 2016 image from the Moria Camp in Lesbos, Greece (which caught fire early last month).

At a different end of the spectrum, Reena Saini Kallat’s “Woven Chronicle” literally stitches together the narratives of migration using electrical wire over-

laid with cables and other colored wires to represent a textured cartography of migration over time. A soundtrack of ambient locomotory tones amplifies the visual piece, mesmerizing in its own right, providing a sense of illusory motion.

He believes a show like DISPLACED helps raise consciousness about the issue, which in turn will drive people to work together to solve it.

“It’s not about being an activist,” he said. “You have to have empathy to the other people around you.”

I had been about to ask Molero if he’d read any of the climate-crisis migration stories when he brought up the 2004 movie The Day After Tomorrow, in which a climate crisis brings on a new Ice Age and forces Americans to flee and cross the border into Mexico. It’s a notable scene in a mostly ridiculous (if entertaining) movie, as it highlights the degree to which Americans take for granted they don’t have to flee their own country. At least not yet.

“Why wait until that moment?”

Molero asked. “That movie shows that we don’t have to wait until something like that happens.”

After Molero and I spoke, I returned to the galleries and Cannupa Hanska Luger’s “Future Ancestral Technologies.” The piece felt to me during all my visits (four and counting) like the show’s coda. A van in the wilderness, surrounded by tools enhanced for optimum utility, articulates what the artist has described as a science-fiction-based vision of the future in which migration itself is an act of survival and integrates Indigenous perspectives on land, home and perseverance. Given the rise in camping in response to COVIID-19, the piece also has an eerie prescience.

I visited the show multiple times in part because it’s large (and also includes a great deal of supplementary video and other materials one can access online).

I also was trying to quell what felt like

outsized enjoyment of the exhibit given its subject, which I thought might be attributable to lack of external stimulation over the last six months. My enjoyment of the show, however, did not diminish upon return visits. While some of the work may be hard to see and some of the stories difficult to hear, overall, much of it is alluring: lush, intricate, provocative.

I thought of Lawrence Weschler’s 1995 essay, “Inventing Peace,” which famously opens with a judge on the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal relaying horrendous abject details from the war criminals on trial before talking about how he escapes from the horrors of the task by going to view the paintings of Johannes Vermeer on display at a nearby museum.

The judge’s aesthetic reprieve turns out to be informative to Weschler, who interrogates the notable serenity of Vermeer’s work as the war tribunals continue, reinterpreting it as a vision of peace from an artist living in an era of Europe filled with ubiquitous strife (“All Europe was Bosnia,” Weschler writes).

DISPLACED does not put a pretty spin on the global refugee crisis by any means, but it also is not staring solely into an abyss of horror and misery.

Rather, it provides a window into the story of human resilience and the creativity we will all need to invoke in the face of hard facts and sad figures.

A Call to Spy Review An ungentlemanly war

So, circa-1940, right about after the time Hitler traipsed into France to declare “Yeah, this is all mine now,” Britain’s Special Operations Executive (kind of like their CIA) was like, “Hey, you know what? The world’s super-misogynist, so if we trained some women how to do spy stuff, they could probably operate in France without calling a lot of attention to themselves!”

And so they did. It’s a rather fascinating and thrilling bit of history told in great detail by filmmaker Lydia Dean Pilcher (Radium Girls) in A Call to Spy, one of the deeper non-documentary dives into the subject.

Recruiting from various military branches, secretarial pools, diplomatic administrators and the like, the SOE’s Vera Atkins (Castle’s Stana Katic) cobbles together a small batch of the first lady spies, sends them into Lyon and pretty much turns the tide of things for both the war and women forever. And though the film claims inspiration from numerous lady spies of the day, it mainly focuses on the efforts of the American Virginia Hall (spy name Bridgette, eventually the first woman agent of the CIA and played by Sarah Megan Thomas, who also produces here) and England’s

OTTOLENGHI AND THE CAKES OF VERSAILLES + FOOD AS ART - WHEN DOES TASTE-O-VISION GET HERE?

When the Metropolitan Museum of Art aimed to throw a party in New York along with the opening of an exhibition on visitors to Versailles between 1682 and 1789, its live arts department met the challenge with an obvious center point: cake.

The department, part of the 2,000-person workforce that runs The Met, typically works with artists including dancers and musicians, but this time the artists were culinary performers who use sugar as their medium.

Celebrated London chef Yotam Ottolenghi invites five others to create works and desserts for the 2018 opening, and Director Laura Gabbert, who brought the world onto the plate of late LA Times food critic Jonathan Gold in City of Gold, cooks up the same success here, combining the stories of the food with the stories of the people who make and eat it.

Before he became a pastry chef, cookbook author and overall food phenom Ottolenghi, who hails from the Jewish side of Jerusalem, was first a scholar of philosophy and art. He trolled Instagram to seek out the chefs he thought were creating cakes in the spirit of Versailles in its heyday, a showplace of the progress of technology, and the pinnacle of European art and culture. Cakes themselves, he notes, were a technological breakthrough of the time, bringing together the chemistry of refined sugar and cream into a transformative delight.

We learned an immense amount during the piece. For example, Marie Antoinette probably never said “Let them eat cake,” but it was among the sentiments used to vilify her and the rest of the monarchy culture in the face of widespread starvation and pov20

STORIES OF AMAZING WOMEN - STRANGE PACING; NOT ENOUGH NOOR KHAN

Noor Inayat Khan (spy name Madeline, England’s first-ever wireless operator, female Muslim war hero and literal Indian royalty/descendent of Tipu Sultan; Radhika Apte).

It’s disappointing the bulk of the film goes to Hall’s exploits given Khan’s pedigree and resume and Atkins’ overarching war efforts, though the American certainly spent more time in the field bombing trains and busting resistance members out of jail and doing other things that are probably more exciting for film. Thomas brings a quiet dignity to the role and achieves more with a simple expression than seems possible.

Apte, on the other hand, does what she can with less screen time and would-be inspiring lines like “I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing!” that tiptoe up to ham-fisted but make a certain kind of sense given the real-life woman’s obvious dedication (she apparently never spilled a secret after being captured by Nazis). Atkins cuts an intriguing story as well, a Romanian Jew repeatedly denied British

erty among the people. Lest we forget: The golden age of Versailles ended in revolution that came from its polarization. Excess and opulence also means exclusion and envy.

You need not be a foodie nor a history buff to enjoy Cakes, but people with both interests undoubtedly will. (Julie Ann Grimm)

+ STIRRING BUT NOT SACCHARINE - WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE ENORMITY OF INJUSTICE?

Beyond the fetishization of the border crossing story, another life and death struggle for immigrants in the United States plays out as they labor to build the places where the nation works, plays and lives.

The short documentary Building the American Dream centers on Texas and its lack of protection for a massive immigrant labor force in the construction industry. And while it’s always easy to hate on our neighbors to the east, viewers across the country should come to terms with the idea the landscape on this topic is nearly homogenous; laborers from south and central America get the jobs done and those in power often treat them more like workhorses or tools than human beings.

Do local and state governments do enough—or anything—to ensure their safety? Especially in Texas, where the ethos of opposition to regulations is strong, the answer is a resounding no. Filmmakers say of the state’s 1 million construction workers, half are undocumented. And when they get hurt or killed, workers and their families usually disappear in fear of consequences from immigration law. Justice seldom factors in.

On top of fatal physical consequences, there are fiscal ones. For the same reasons corporations can

citizenship despite her innumerable contributions to the liberation of France and Europe at large. She, too, gets fewer minutes than Hall, which becomes another disappointment given Katic’s bubbling rage and hard-won heartache in the face of duty and something larger than herself.

Pity, then, that the overall feel of the film is that of a BBC miniseries. It certainly tracks that Pilcher is trying to pack a lot of story into a brief couple hours, but some scenes feel unnecessary or burdensome, others too brief. Those who didn’t know should take notice, however, particularly misogynists and closeted fascists. There was a time when the globe united over things like this, and unsurprisingly, women led the way in with more important actions than we realize. Invaluable history lesson? No question. Great movie? Maybe not.

get away with hurting workers, they also get out of paying them. The Workers Defense Project takes a starring role here in tackling both safety and savings accounts as a successful advocacy organization, though its members are definitely David in the battle against the giant.

We especially love the portrayal of women in the documentary—not only that one of the leading subjects, an electrician named Claudia, is among the unsung skilled women of the industry, but also, for example, young Jasmine Granillo appears as an articulate spokesperson for her family after her older brother died from heat exhaustion on the job.

+ SWEET RELIEF; A DEEPER PERSONAL LOOK AT WILLIAMS

- SHORT; WHERE ARE THE KIDS?

Hard to believe it’s been six years since certified comic genius Robin Williams shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s even harder to believe how sensationalist the media became after descending on his small Northern California community in the wake of his death.

In Robin’s Wish, documentary mainstay Tylor Norwood (The United States of Detroit) takes a deeper look at Williams’ final days, running through a quick primer of a storied career before identifying Lewy body dementia as the real culprit behind his suicide—not depression, not anxiety, not substance abuse. It took years for Williams’ widow Susan Schneider Williams to make that information known, and while the fallout from the incurable disease was devastating to the actor and

those around him, not knowing seems worse.

Turns out Lewy body is as vile a disease as they come, one which degenerates the brain through improperly folding proteins, one which literally shuts down “neighborhoods” within one’s neuronic connections and leads to massive amounts of confusion, selfdoubt and even the rewiring of thoughts. Williams was, according to doctors interviewed in the film, quite literally a different person in his waning days, and comments from friends, colleagues, neighbors and Schneider Williams corroborate that thesis.

So why is this important? Why dwell on the death of a man who meant so much to so many? In a word—hope. The filmmakers and those Williams left behind valiantly attempt to diffuse any romantic notion of a tortured artist, granted with a starry eyed series of reminders that they just don’t make ’em like Robin Williams; in fact, says one doctor, his rapid-fire mind and sharpened comedic abilities may have lent a hand in staving off the disease much longer than if he’d been neurotypical.

One wonders why the Williams kids don’t make an appearance in Robin’s Wish, and some interviews with neighbors almost feel like a chance for civilians to let the world know they surely had a famous friend once. But with a strong sense of vindication rattling around someplace between old chestnuts about Dead Poet’s Society and Juilliard and Christopher Reeve, etc., there’s a sense of relief.

As it stands, Williams was probably the last of his kind, one of the few celebrities universally loved and a beacon of joy for folks from all walks of life— from moviegoers and kids to soldiers he entertained at years’ worth of USO performances. Knowing he hadn’t made a conscious choice to die, while tragic, feels bittersweet, but one knows above all else he wouldn’t have wanted the world to suffer on in the dark. (ADV)

BATMAN was rescued by a Good Samaritan who started feeding this skinny cat and saw a painful wound on his head. We are not sure if the wound was from a ruptured abscess or he was burned by at hot exhaust system. At first, we thought he might lose his right eye, but he has made a remarkable recovery and his eye was saved. BATMAN is a sweet and loving boy. He gets along with other cats but would also be happy as the only pet in his new home. BATMAN is approximately 5 years old.
