As the fossil fuel economy craters in northwestern New Mexico, will departing drillers clean up after themselves?

R

Corners Power Plant and the San Juan Generating Station, decreased property taxes and job losses in the natural gas industry over the course of roughly 10 years.

The changes reverberate across the entire economy, leaving local governments with millions in budget shortfalls.

None of this is new for the Four Corners, a resource-rich area that comprises parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah. Busts have rocked its economy ever since drillers began exploiting its petroleum reserves in the 1920s and mining its natural gas in the 1940s. Recent developments in extraction technologies, for natural gas in particular, have made its fields more productive but have also made the regional economy more vulnerable to crashes when natural-gas prices drop.

Recovery typically follows. But this bust feels different. “It feels like fossil fuels have met their demise,” said Mike Eisenfeld, the energy and climate program manager with the San Juan Citizens Alliance.

That doesn’t mean, however, “that people and families and communities should just be abandoned.”

ancher Don Schreiber remembers San Juan County in the 1950s, when its largest city, Farmington, was a company town. That company, El Paso Natural Gas, ran everything from the wells to the gas stations. It donated money to 4-H and the hospital; it pitched in to build Little League fields and the first nine holes of the local golf course.

“El Paso was still one of the most destructive forces of industry in the history of the world,” Schreiber said. “But [the people who ran it] fully participated in the community.”

Schreiber worked with his father, selling insurance for the oil and gas industry for 44 years. He’s seen plenty of things change since the 1950s, including the names of the companies, from El Paso to Six years ago, when the US Bureau of Meridian Oil to Burlington Resources Oil Land Management was gearing up for new and Gas to ConocoPhillips to Hilcorp, the development, white pickup trucks zipped firm that bought out ConocoPhillips— up Highway 550 in northwestern New four-story Farmington office building and Mexico. Tankers hauled water and chemicals and trailers pulled compressors and all—for $3 billion in 2017.

“It’s all the same assets,” Schreiber drill rigs down dirt roads. Just four years said of the wells and pipelines that get earlier, overproduction and falling prices bought and sold. “But every time the as- had sent workers packing from the San sets turn over, the new owner is less generous and SAN JUAN BASIN further removed from the community.” Hilcorp, for example, closed its local office “and moved every executive out within weeks,” he said. “They wiped out the entire executive class of Farmington, shut the management headquarters down and moved all of that responsibility to Houston.”

(Hilcorp’s public relations department did not respond to requests to comment for this story.)

The region’s economy has already been hit hard in recent years—by the retirement of units at the Four

Fracking’s Fall in the San Juan Basin

The US Bureau of Land Management began planning in 2014 for oil and gas development of roughly 2 million acres in the San Juan Basin. Here, well pads are visible from an airplane.

But with advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, companies started showing renewed interest in the basin. The new technology made it possible to access resources that had in the past been uneconomical, or even impossible, to reach. In 2014 the federal agency started planning for how to develop roughly 2 million acres in the region.

Local communities and environmentalists resisted the new development— especially when the federal government began approving leases for exploratory wells near archaeological and sacred sites, such as Chaco Culture National Historical Park. But people in the oil and gas industries had high hopes. “Other parts of the country were seeing booms, certainly the Bakken and Marcellus, [because of ] the evolution of this technology,” Eisenfeld said, referring to the Bakken Shale Play in Montana, North Dakota and Canada, and the Marcellus Formation in the Eastern United States. “At the time, there was this glee that oil and gas here were going to be part of this boom.”

Eisenfeld was less optimistic. For decades, he had witnessed his community’s ups and downs. Even before COVID-19 gripped the world market and gut-punched demand for oil and natural gas, big companies had already pulled out of the San Juan Basin in New Mexico.

After ConocoPhillips sold off its assets in the basin, the

Oklahoma-based WPX Energy left to focus on plays in the Bakken and Permian basins. That same year, Encana Oil and Gas left, too, followed in 2019 by Harvest Oil & Gas and BP American Production, which divested from the San Juan Basin and put that money toward other parts of the country. In 2014, the BLM’s Farmington field office approved more than 200 applications for permits to drill, or APDs. As September 2020 began, that number had dropped to 28.

Even down in the bustling Permian Basin on the New Mexico-Texas border, according to Reuters, bids for New Mexico parcels in the BLM’s first post-pandemic lease sale ran in the hundreds of dollars per acre, not the thousands of dollars they brought in earlier in the year.

“The bust,” Eisenfeld said, “is the new norm.”

Despite forecasts showing little chance for recovery anytime soon, the BLM will “continue to lease as industry submits notifications of interest for certain oil and gas parcels,” Jillian Aragon, spokeswoman for the BLM in Farmington, explained. In fact, she added, it has a congressional mandate to do so.

But in an August San Juan County Commission meeting, County Manager Mike Stark said he doubted the San Juan Basin would ever relive the booms of its past. Ten years ago, 10 property owners were responsible for almost half the county’s entire property tax revenue. Many of those have since left the region, and last year the top 10 taxpayers paid just 23% of the county’s property tax revenue.

“If the revenue stays exactly as we’ve anticipated and budgeted for this fiscal year, that would leave us with a $4.6 mil-

lion shortfall for 2022,” Stark told the assembled commissioners as he pulled up financial records onto a screen. To balance some of those losses, the county recently approved an increase in gross receipts taxes. But even that’s not likely enough.

“We’ve seen a dramatic downturn in GRT in the last five years,” Stark said in a recent phone conversation. “Oil and gas production revenue has really fallen off the table.”

Looking at the forecasts out to 2030, Stark said there won’t be much of a swing on pricing. And if that’s the case, he said, companies aren’t going to drill new wells in the Four Corners. Companies will keep pumping from existing wells, but over time those will decline—and natural gas will be produced from other basins, like the Permian, where gas is the byproduct of oil drilling.

“Looking forward,” Stark said, “we shouldn’t count on another boom.”

Don Schreiber and his wife now run cattle on a ranch one county over from San Juan. But there’s no escaping the hand of industry: About 122 wells sit on and adjacent to their ranch. And he worries what might happen to them in the coming years as the industry moves on.

Right now, there are over 30,000 wells in the San Juan Basin, but only about 20,000 remain active.

“You’re in danger of orphaned and abandoned wells at every level: Your first concern is the small producer who just ducks out, that goes off and abandons their well or takes bankruptcy,” Schreiber said. The BLM and the state of New Mexico require companies to secure bonds to guarantee they’ll comply with

regulations, including safely plugging wells once they’re no longer producing.

But Schreiber said the bonds are “wholly inadequate.” They represent just a fraction of what it costs to properly plug and abandon a well, which includes rehabilitating the well site, the road and any pipelines or other infrastructure.

Adrienne Sandoval, director of New Mexico’s Oil Conservation Division, agreed that the downturn comes with certain risks. “Companies on the margins of going out of business may be forced to make decisions that put compliance on the backburner,” she said. “We need to be as diligent as possible to make sure our regulations are being followed and we’re protecting human health and the environment.”

Two years ago, the state Legislature increased the amount companies must set aside when bonding inactive wells and single wells.

This spring, with the onset of the novel coronavirus, the state also issued a new guidance for companies with wells that aren’t economically viable. Normally, wells are also subject to the state’s “plugging and abandonment rule” if they haven’t been active in 15 months. The changes, she said, “help operators buffer themselves” when prices are low. They could also reduce the risk that companies might just walk away, leaving their abandoned wells to fester, which would help people like Schreiber.

But nothing short of an economic transition—away from fossil fuels, and toward more sustainable industries – will likely arrest Farmington’s decline. “I’m heartbroken for the town,” Schreiber said. “At the same time, I’m furious they won’t embrace all the other opportunities they have—in ag, outdoor recreation and so many other gifts they’ve been given.”

Leaders could have seen the writing on the wall years ago, he said. Industry was already pulling out, the climate was warming and changes were necessary.

Leaders could have put people to work on new technologies, rather than fighting federal and then state attempts at regulating methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.

“We could have said, ‘We could be a leader in these methane remediation products, we could figure out how to capture this gas and do that better and cheaper, and it’s something that’s needed all over the world,’” he said. “Instead of just sitting there, trying to take out that last drop of oil or last poof of gas.”

A

s the spread of COVID-19 has slowed its burn through the Navajo Nation, several Indigenous filmmakers and creators have managed to complete part of the production of a documentary. Its focus is even more relevant in today’s modern pandemic life: the striking parallels between homeopathy and traditional Navajo healing practices and how homeopathy could be used as another mode of healing on the reservation.

Hózhóogo Iiná—Homeopathy for Indigenous America, directed and produced by Leahn Cox and funded by donations to GoFundMe and a John Pinto Grant from the New Mexico Film Office, is both a personal and professional endeavor.

Cox is a member of the Navajo Nation who grew up in Gallup, though she now lives and works in Santa Fe. Her upbringing as a Diné woman and her experience and education in homeopathy and other healing arts drove her to start the project, which she plans to screen in chapter houses across the Navajo Nation, as well as in Albuquerque and border towns.

“I definitely have had interest in bringing homeopathy and making it more available in places with limited access to these types of alternative resources, particularly now in the Navajo Nation,” Cox tells SFR.

“I have been trying to offer [homeopathy] where I live, where I’m from, and to family members. But there’s so much confusion and so that’s one reason the film, I think, could put it in terms of understanding it in the sense of talking about ancient Indigenous knowledge.”

The GoFundMe has raised $2,475 of a $20,000 goal. The state grant named after a late Navajo senator gave the project $5,000, which has funded the bulk of the work. Cox aims to raise at least another $5,000 to pay for an animator for a portion of Hózhóogo Iiná. She also hopes to turn it into a larger project where she explores the use of homeopathy in other Indigenous communities across North America.

Germans developed homeopathic medicine over 200 years ago, and based it on two main premises: that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people and that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. The medicines used in homeopathy come from plants, animals and minerals.

The fundamentals of homeopathy tie in neatly with Navajo traditional healing practices, Cox says.

“Homeopathy is about this vibrational signature of substances in the environment and you take it and inspire your own vitality to heal,” Cox says. “So through ancient knowledge you have...this understanding there’s an inner spirit form in our environment and that when you really understand that you use that knowledge for healing.”

of the interviewees, is also the primary consultant for the project on the Navajo holistic perspective. Denetdeal is a retired professor of Navajo Studies from Diné College. In the documentary, he discusses the Navajo idea that an inner spirit existing within everything in nature is what’s doing the healing, just as homeopathy recognizes an energy form in plants and other elements.

But Hózhóogo Iiná is about more than just the parallels between the two healing modalities, one formed many thousands of miles away and another here in the Southwest. The documentary intends to explore, in a practical way, the potential of the use of homeopathy on the Navajo Nation as well as to increase Indigenous peoples’ interest in their own traditional healing.

Golf at Marty Sanchez, Santa Fe’s true public course, has been a ‘lifesaver’ amid pandemic sorrows

he longer you live as a golfer without recording a hole-inone, the steeper the climb.

For me, a family curse: Two generations of better than average amateur players spanning six decades in the game without a single ace.

So when the ball leaves my wedge and sails straight for the flagstick on the 161yard, par-3 seventh hole during a recent tour of the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe, I have a moment.

“Go…” I growl, hoping the shot has enough to clear the yawning bunker short and right of the green. “…in?” I ask the gods, confident of the distance as the ball descends.

It does not.

Instead, it stops a few feet short, bang on line. I hole the putt for birdie, half-disappointed.

The curse persists, but the moment had been real. Within it lay an expansive peace that stretches, for me, to childhood—one that embodies new depth in the stifled surreality of life amid a six-month-old pandemic that threatens to stretch further.

Several Santa Feans who spoke with SFR for this story feel the same: Golf, once folks were allowed back on courses, has been “something normal” as they’ve watched thousands of fellow state residents get infected with COVID-19 and hundreds more die from the virus.

It’s been a “respite,” a “mental health save,” a “lifesaver.”

The relief comes as stay-at-home orders have fundamentally altered the way we interact with others, creating a collective scar no one can yet fully understand—not to mention Santa Fe’s place in a nation cut and bruised by a bitter presidential election and violence, righteous anger and pushback against America’s entrenched systems of racial and gender inequality.

As case counts have ping-ponged, threatening New Mexico’s already tenuous economic future, the state has begun to peek its head above the wall created by the new coronavirus. Restaurants have slowly, restrictively unlocked their doors. Some people have returned, masked, to the office.

In-person school is back on the table. Youth sports tiptoe to life.

Golf was the canary in the coal mine, the first of Santa Fe’s Parks and Recreation offerings to come back online after more than six weeks of deserted fairways and greens.

The game naturally lends itself to the outdoor, socially distanced ways in which folks

can interact without a Zoom link or fear of once again bulging the curve.

“We did this very carefully,” says John Muñoz, the city’s Parks and Rec director.

“It’s been very successful because our staff and our users have made sure of it.”

There’ve been struggles, including a budget reduction for Marty, as it’s called by those who love it, of nearly 25% for the current fiscal year; a dip in rounds and revenues year-over-year due to the COVID-19 shutdown on March 16 and subsequent water plant issues that forced an additional closure; and furloughs for about a dozen staffers at the course.

After weeks of lobbying Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration to give golf a chance, courses, pros and organizations that support the game glimpsed some possible good news in late April.

The green light came the first weekend in May. “There was this idea that golf could be this beacon of light in a time of despair,” says Alo Brodsky, Marty’s head golf professional. “It’s kind of something those of us around the game always probably knew, but it made sense in a different way after all of this: On the course, it’s always been social, while distanced.”

Since the reopening, complete with COVID-safe practices such as eliminating shared surfaces and strict tee-time policies, Marty has exploded. For July and August, rounds are up over last year by more than 2,400, Muñoz tells SFR. Staffers are back on board. All day long, the place hums with the singular rhythms of golf.

The game itself has a rotten history of racism, sexism and exclusivity that, in these current times of upheaval, perhaps it still deserves. A quick glance at the men’s professional game reveals very few non-white players. On the women’s side, where there’s significantly more ethnic diversity, players earn fractions compared to the men, despite what is arguably a more compelling version of the game and a superior television product.

But at Marty, the only truly public course in the area, that’s not the thing.

It’s not the only golf option in Santa Fe or Northern New Mexico, but it’s the most affordable, accessible and, for those who have chosen it as a golf home, the most welcoming.

For them, there’s pretty much no place else.

“This is where you can throw your heels into the ground and your heart to the sun,” says Miguel Rodriguez, president of the Men’s Golf Association at Marty. “When

the governor gave us the OK, people were elated. And not just privileged white guys.”

Marty Sanchez the golfer was a local world-beater who won every tournament in sight in the 1980s. The course, which sits on a bluff 8 miles west of the Plaza and offers panoramas of three mountain ranges, took its name from Sanchez when it opened in 1998, six years after he died of cancer.

The property features an 18-hole course with five sets of teeing grounds, ranging from more than 7,200 yards—a healthy total, even at Santa Fe’s high elevation, where the ball travels farther—to 5,025 yards, a more manageable length for shorter hitters. There’s also “The Great 28,” a nine-hole design that provides opportunities to work on the more delicate parts of the game.

The course’s annual budget has hovered between $3.2 million and $3.5 million, but that number is down to $2.5 million this fiscal year as the city struggles with myriad financial holes. Rounds are down, too, this year—by about 7%—which means the course isn’t bringing in as much money to pay down the $20 million debt the city incurred to build the massive sports complex west of NM 599 that includes Marty.

In fact, annual rounds have been slipping for years, reaching a peak of nearly 53,000 in 2000, then declining to yearly averages more recently of about 36,000.

The uptick this summer—which city officials and golf course staff attribute to Santa Feans’ thirst for something familiar

and outdoors during the pandemic—has brightened forecasts.

“I am very hopeful we will recover some of our lost ground,” says Muñoz, the Parks and Rec director.

Those who play Marty in 2020 will find a course that’s matured since the early days by sticking to its beginnings.

First, there’s the reduction by 47 million gallons this year of effluent water course superintendent Pat Brockwell has used to feed the grass. He glows about the accomplishment.

“We sometimes get criticism, but we are reusing wastewater here,” Brockwell says. “The city gets to use that water twice—once in town when people flush the toilet and again to keep this wonderful expanse of turf that people can enjoy.”

The man knows every inch of the property, and he’s proud but humble in describing the test he presents to golfers each day.

The greens are creeping bentgrass, a difficult strain to maintain in desert conditions; the fairways and rough are a mix of fine fescue and bluegrass.

The combination—and a welcome aversion to overwatering—allows Brockwell to keep the course firm and fast. That’s a philosophical priority for him, in keeping with the word “links” in Marty’s official name, harkening to the bouncy, rolling nature of the game’s original layouts in Scotland that were built on “linksland” between the sea and inland highlands.

“The shot’s not over when the ball hits the ground,” Brockwell says, sitting back in

his seat and playing music to my ears.

My own recent round at Marty bears this out.

I played with Vic Vela, a fellow journalist and old friend. He was a Santa Fe-based reporter for the Albuquerque Journal, where we worked together, and is now one of the most recognizable voices on Colorado Public Radio.

We hadn’t seen each other since last summer, at a Dead and Company concert in Albuquerque, where I live—back before the world caught fire, before we couldn’t have imagined not being able to congregate by the thousands for the joy of live music.

Vic let me know a couple weeks ago that he’d be visiting. Marty was the obvious choice.

I’ve been playing 44 years; there are photographs of me with a golf club in my hand before my second birthday. There was even a time when I was good, before I went to work for a living.

Vic has not played as long, but Marty gave us both a fair, fun chance, with plenty of runout on Brockwell’s fast playing surfaces, and choices to attack each hole through the air or along the ground.

Give golfers options, and there’s not a single playing style a course like Marty doesn’t suit.

Vic played well; I showed signs of the old brilliance in between the sorts of massive mistakes that have sent my scores northward as time goes along.

players a chance to recover. There’s not much “rough” to speak of—that’s the longer grass at the edges that parallels the shorter-cut “fairways”—but if your ball flies wide of it, you’ll spend some time searching amid the scrub and cactus.

Even that didn’t matter as Vic and I had a chance to catch up, enjoy the air and renew our friendship in these deranged times. Despite our shared decades in journalism—much of focused on dark, difficult topics—we did not discuss any of that As is common with most municipal courses, we were paired with two other players to make a foursome. We didn’t know them when we teed off, but we did when we finished. They were of varying skill levels, played the course from vastly different distances, finished miles apart on the scorecard and deployed a wide swath of English after shots good and bad—some of it not family friendly.

That’s golf. And that’s Marty.

The unobstructed views that infuse the peace of golf in a time of COVID-19 with an even richer meaning don’t hurt.

Peso Chavez, the well known local private eye and former city councilor who helped push Marty’s construction over the finish line, hosts an annual charity tournament there that benefits disadvantaged youth.

“The nice thing about the course is it sits up, on top of everything,” Chavez says.

“With so many private ones, the course sits down below, and the houses are all up above. Not at Marty.”

The Fore Kids tournament almost didn’t happen this year because of the pandemic. When the course closed, doubt ran rampant.

But late last month, they pulled it off.

About 120 people turned out, helping to raise more than $12,000, 95% of which will help kids who can’t afford it to learn golf and participate in other city activities, says

Melissa Bustos, recreation manager for the Parks and Rec Department.

“The tournament opens doors for kids, and people were so happy that it continued,” Bustos says. “During the pandemic, we’ve seen a rise in violence against youth in Santa Fe. I see kids counting pennies at the Chavez Center who can’t afford the $4 to get in. This money makes a difference and gives kids and families something to do.”

Peso Chavez doesn’t get to play much golf anymore—about once a year, during the tournament—but the game’s spirit, especially during uncertain times, stays with him.

“It speaks to your moral development and your honesty,” he says. “At the end of the day, you are the judge, jury and executioner of how you did on the course.”

best score on The Great 28 is 34. It came after not touching a club for weeks following a knee surgery, and it means Hyde is no beginner.

“I like a public course,” Hyde says. “It’s cheaper, which I appreciate, and it’s beautiful to boot. They meet you where you are, and I feel like more women play at Marty. At the country club, it’s way more male-feeling, with a lot of talk about drinking and the 19th hole.”

She also enjoys the city’s deep-water aerobics program for exercise. But that’s still not an option with COVID-19 restrictions.

Planning for a round at Marty with her friends has been as important as the golf itself, Hyde says. It gives the group something to talk about besides the latest COVID-19 case counts or death totals— and something to look forward to.

“I’m kind of a news junkie, which is a terribly unhealthy habit these days,” she says. “Arranging a game and then getting out there, I don’t even think about Trump or the orange hair or the Supreme Court going to hell in a handbasket. It’s a respite, a mental-health save, a place to focus on something besides how awful everything is.”

Hyde’s group was crushed when courses were closed statewide in March.

“We were dying to get back on the golf course because it’s a normal thing to do, and nothing else is normal,” Hyde says.

“We can do it safely, together, apart and not on Zoom.”

Brodsky, the head pro at Marty, tells SFR the closure was “emotionally depressing.”

He laid off 12 staffers, putting many of their livelihoods at risk, in a move he didn’t really agree with. Brodsky felt that golf could continue safely, even in the uncertain early days of the pandemic.

Like at many courses around the state, he’s made dramatic operational changes to ensure safety.

He says he’s been playing about 10 years. Ferri visits Marty a couple times a week, usually with three regular golf buddies. They eschew the golf cart, instead choosing to walk the course and push their clubs on three-wheeled trollies.

Getting outside is important to Ferri, and he’s clearly wary of COVID-19. But at Marty, the worry fades. He points out that the other dozen or so folks hitting balls on the range are all wearing masks, as is he.

And there’s plenty of distance between each person, a positioning that only increases out on the course.

“Staying six or eight feet away is really easy,” Ferri says. “That’s how golf is anyway, and this is where I want to play my golf. This place is a gem.”

A bit further along, I encounter Rodriguez, the men’s association president, again.

A first glance might not suggest a seriously skilled golfer. Today, he looks more ready for some home repairs than an under-par round. Even his old school, homemade swing wouldn’t give an opponent much pause—till you see the ball take off.

He alternates between a few different irons for a handful of shots on the range, none of them curving more than a yard or two. Rodriguez says he’s a scratch player. (For the uninitiated, that means he’s better than 99% of people who will ever play.) His best round during the pandemic is a 68. (That’s very, very, very good.)

I’m certain Rodriguez is telling the truth and that you’d best pack a lunch to take him on in one of the weekly money games at the course.

But after the two of us share a brief lament about how advances in club and ball technology have rendered the pro game moderately boring to watch, he’d rather talk about Marty.

Since play restarted, Rodriguez has heard and felt a consistent refrain: Marty has been the lone spot for folks possessed with the golf bug to get away, exercise, take a deep breath.

Rodriguez speaks stern and certain about the diversity at Marty. Seniors, kids, the women’s league and people of every race and ethnicity coming to enjoy a game with a terrible historical reputation as elitist.

At nearly 70, Rodriguez remembers his early playing days as a teenager when the game’s arms pushed him away because of how he looks.

That’s not the vibe at Marty.

keep people from touching the same surfaces. There are no rakes in the sandtraps.

There are no walk-ups; all rounds are pre-arranged. Tee times have been spaced 15 minutes apart instead of eight. That helps to discourage congregating near the clubhouse and the first tee. Golf carts are sanitized after each use, and unless two players live together, each gets their own for a round.

Tee times are required now even for appointments on the driving range and on The Great 28.

“I’ve learned a lot,” Brodsky says.

“Some of these changes will never go back. Tee times, for example: Spacing them further out has also improved pace of play. People are getting around faster, which is always a good thing.”

The sixth-year head pro praises Santa Fe as a place where following COVID-safe practices at a golf course is perhaps a bit easier than in other locations. People understand the necessity of wearing masks to continue flattening the curve—particularly inside the clubhouse and restaurant and even in some of Marty’s higher-traffic outdoor areas such as the patio, driving range and practice putting green.

A quick stroll up and down the range turns up plenty of evidence.

Richard Ferri of Santa Fe strikes a solid drive with a tiny left-to-right fade, then another, as I approach to ask what golf has meant to him during the pandemic.

“It’s been a lifesaver. I don’t know any other way to say it,” Ferri says, pausing before another excellent warmup shot. “If it hadn’t reopened, if we weren’t allowed to come out here and play, what in God’s name would we be doing? Everything else is so tough right now.”

“The camaraderie is the thing out here, and people really dig on that,” he says.

“Nobody cares what your wallet looks like.”

I grew up in Kentucky, playing at some of those stuffy, elitist clubs that would have looked sideways at Rodriguez, regardless of his ability to whip most of the membership on the course. That changed when I started caddying in my 20s and again when I moved to Albuquerque in 2001.

Since then, I’ve played nearly all my golf at public courses. Just before the pandemic hit, I hesitantly joined a semi-private course, where I play with a group of diversely opinionated guys who wouldn’t look askance at anyone ready to enjoy a round of socially distanced golf.

We talk a little politics, a little life, a lot of golf. I’m the oldest and worst player in the group, but these are my guys. I’ve seen more of them in person than anyone else since New Mexico recorded its first COVID-19 case on March 11.

They’re quick to razz me when I’ve started a round well, only to self-immolate by launching a ball into the Jeff Proctor Memorial Penalty Area near the sixth green at our course. (That’s a great spot to forage for a natural snack, but full of dark, dank coleslaw from which no golfer could ever escape.)

They’re just as quick to encourage me or to salve the wound with a cold IPA. Rodriguez is right: The camaraderie is the thing.

That floods back once again as Vic and I finish our round at Marty and say goodbye. Had it not been for golf, I may not have heard that massive, unmistakable laugh during his visit.

Just as he leaves, my friend and colleague, SFR’s Katherine Lewin, joins me to make some photographs to accompany this story. She’s never hit a golf ball, so I hand her a club, tee a couple up and suggest she swing hard.

Several of her efforts fly straight and true against the imposing sky over Marty.

Like me, Katherine is an extrovert, and staying at home has done her no favors.

“Did you see that one?” she asks, abeam, after a particularly solid shot.

“Yep,” I respond. “Do it again.”

A bit later, on our way off the course, we find Brodsky, the pro, giving two young boys a lesson in the ninth fairway. I suggest a closest-to-the-hole contest from 100 yards.

Nathan and Adam buckle down and send their balls toward the green. Brodsky plants one five feet from the hole.

“Yours sounded better,” he says right after I strike the shot. It wasn’t. My ball finishes 35 feet short, in the fringe of the green.

That’s golf. And that’s Marty—pandemic or none.

Oh, sure, she’s got all the credentials like learnin’ from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (plus a sweet arts teaching gig at UNM), but in the works that’ll be shown at Santa Fe’s Foto Forum starting this week, there’s something more emotional than academic.

Gould created her own pigments in a rainbow’s worth of colors, then used them to dye anything from dandelions and cotton swabs to tampons, popcorn and marshmallows. Such slight alterations help us peer at the easily over-lookable with fresh eyes, questioning our perceived realities and drawing our minds to thoughts of why we accept the things that just are. Of course, that’s just us—you’ll have to put on your mask and make your own calls.

Thumbs Pricked Lindsay Payton goes bigger, stays creepy Oh, we’re longtime fans of local artist/ illustrator Lindsay Payton’s particular brand of creepy/Halloween/folklore-inspired work. There’s just something so bizarrely wholesome-yet-evil about the horror aesthetic mixed with references to flora, fauna and the ritualistic. That’s why this time of year we’re usually feeling pretty pumped because we know Payton will almost always unleash a new body of macabre works for us to peruse and feel scared about. It’s almost like Poe’s head split open and the insides escaped, or at least like Payton cut her teeth during the golden era of ’70s and ’80s horror and the old Universal monster flicks. However she made it happen, this is Payton’s time of year and the output has been good.

“This exhibit casts a pretty wide net—a lot of it was done this summer while in quarantine,” Payton tells SFR. “It does fall within my usual schemes: folklore, witchery, cautionary tales, and some recognizable cult classics that came with the season, but if anything, the pandemic gave me time and patience to play around with new mediums, so that was a bit of a silver lining.”

“With that extra time I got the courage to explore with watercolor more, which opened up a new wave of ideas—mostly a series of witch’s familiars,” she explains. “I also tend to stare at pieces for a long time anyway, so it’s been a good lesson in diving into it instead of being nervous about what mistakes I could make.”

For an artist who’d always planned to stick to smaller pieces, this departure is welcome to those who know her work.

“I always thought I’d say mini forever because I have a penchant for the mini stuff, and they’re only about 7x10 inches, but that’s a big step for me,” Payton says.

“But the momentum is still going to create so I want to ride that wave as it goes.

Now that I’ve tried my hand at some new avenues, I’m really excited for what’s in store. And it’s the best time of year. I’ll definitely be creating through October.”

one has seen by and large for the last 100 years,” Frej tells SFR. “Because there’s a number of questions that still exist among Mayanists and archaeologists about what really happened to the Maya culture; more and more research is being done and pointing to climate change.”

Frej says much of his drive came from rediscovering sites found by Maler, photographs of which have rarely been seen by anyone, but some of which he used as inspiration (and appears in the book).

There’s a little bit of posterity behind the project as well, a little something to leave behind for the artists and scientists of the future, but ultimately, Maya Ruins Revisted has a covert environmental message—there’s not much time left to get a

I

n March, Santa Fe photographer William Frej and his wife Anne barely made it out of Mérida, Mexico before the international effects of the COVID-19 pandemic grounded air travel. By his estimation, it might have been the very last flight out of the Yucatan city in that turbulent period.

Following in the footsteps of German/ Austrian photographer Teobert Maler (who, btw, wound up in Mexico as part of Maximilian’s army in the 1860s, survived the ensuing onslaught and lived out his days obsessively photographing Mayan ruins until he died in 1917), Frej has worked the Yucatan for years. Documenting sites throughout the region has become so commonplace for him, he even has a little place down there, and much of the gold he struck while exploring the area this time out makes its way into his new book of stunning black and white shots, Maya Ruins Revisited: In the Footsteps of Teobert Maler, which will release through Santa Fe’s Peyton Wright Gallery alongside an exhibit of large scale prints.

With his trusty camera in hand and new information unearthed by futuristic LiDAR laser scanning technology, Frej came away with countless shots of ruins Maler visited, some he hadn’t and a deeper understanding of the size and scope of the Mayan civilizations that once pulsed with unfathomably large populations.

“I had a couple of goals, objectives, for doing this book, and one was really documenting remote Maya sites that no

lid on climate change, and certainly no civilization is guaranteed forever.

Frej points to the city of Tikal in Guatemala, where he says earlier estimates of roughly 200,000 citizens now seem incorrect thanks to LiDAR discoveries from archaeologists.

“Now they think maybe 1 or 2 million,” he says. “They found 65,000 structures they hadn’t thought existed.”

But, Frej adds, experts believe the civilization’s water supply started to run dry 12-to-1,500 years ago, killing crops and people, scattering survivors further out into the region and beyond.

“They now know there was major drought,” Frej explains. “It wasn’t warring factions.”

Today, these remote sites are desolate and require dozens of hours to reach, and according to Frej, it’s easy to draw comparisons between the Maya and the possible future of our own civilization.

“I think it’s important to raise the question of where we’re headed,” Frej adds. “One wonders where the world will be in 50 years if changes aren’t made without really grasping climate change.”

Of course, there’s the thrill of discovery, as well. Many Mayan sites have gone untouched by all but caretakers or perhaps nearby farmers and beekeepers. Frej had to get governmental permission to even shoot many of the ruins. Still, he says, it was more than worth the paperwork and travel time; he recalls a long trek through the jungle during which he came across a pair of massive stone serpent heads he estimates were 5 feet tall by 4 feet wide.

“They were obviously place markers to mark the corner of a major plaza in the city,” he says excitedly, “but there they were, nearly 1,500 years later and you can still find objects like this. Luckily, they’ve never been looted.”

Because in many cases, these sites are so remote, one would never just stumble across them. Frej’s use of crisp black and white only furthers the feel of isolation inherent in the abandoned structures; an intriguing take considering the vibrant colors for which the Yucatan is known.

“The jungle,” Frej notes, “is really black and white—the time of the year the leaves are off the trees…it has this really stark feeling. And when these structures were built, they were painted in blues and reds and yellows, but today the limestone is a very white-ish gray color, which works well for black and white.”

Considering Frej’s regular use of bold colors and people in many other photos— his series of the rituals of the Cora people rests someplace in-between— Mayan Ruin Revisited is a perhaps more academic approach for the photog, but one that easily dredges up emotions in the viewer and remains reverential. As of today, Frej says he still has about 12 Maler sites to visit to complete his long-running pilgrimage. The search, he says with a chuckle, will go on.

“This will stick with me for a long time,” he concludes.

Santa Fean crafts gorgeous quarantine cookbook to benefit Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp

hen Hannah Day wound up laid off from a job as creative director for a local cosmetics company earlier this year, it wasn’t the pandemic’s fault. Still, she found herself in quarantine alongside her family—you know, like everyone—and discovered that not working wound up gifting her with some extra creative energy.

“I was home with my kids, which took up a lot of energy, but I had some to spare,” she explains. “And while we’re becoming so much more aware of the inequality that’s still in our country, I felt like I had to do something.”

That something is the Kitchen Meets Quarantine cookbook, an impressive compendium of recipes culled from Day’s own private reserve as well as roughly 30 other contributors from her network, here known as “friends.” Everything from the contents to the design was provided pro bono, and 100% of the proceeds made after Day recoups printing costs, will go to the Know Your Rights Camp (knowyourrightscamp.com), an organization founded by Colin Kaepernick to educate Black and Brown communities on liberation, self-empowerment and leadership.

“The people who contributed are bonafide creative professionals, stay-at-home moms, lawyers…it’s a wide gamut of skill and professional levels,” Day tells SFR. “They’re all keeping us keeping on, and

some are highly skilled, complex recipes, some are easy and use a packet of ranch.”

The book’s split up into sections covering starters, salads, soups, main courses, breakfast and sweets and sips—some cocktails, some not. The main idea is that everything in the recipe lineup can be made easily, and Day sweetens the deal both with alternate ingredient ideas for every recipe.

Don’t have celery? Not a problem—this book has suggestions, as well as personal stories from its contributors.

“Some are really funny, some are sad, some are personal reflections about how they were feeling at the time,” Day says. “I think that’s actually my favorite part.

As for Day herself, she’s learned a little more flexibility while pulling the book together. She’s giving meat sauces more of a chance, for example, and found a pea, mint and feta salad she adores. It’s also something she can do with her kids and something that’s purposefully accessible to all levels of home chef.

You’ll find tons of photos through the @kitchenmeetsquarantine Instagram account and hashtag, plus the warm knowledge that you’ve done something to help marginalized communities.

“There’s no time for wasting anymore,” Day says. “Know Your Rights Camp is a pretty special group because they empower youths to get involved and engaged. It sounds corny, but our hope lies in their hands. As much as we can do to make the world better for them…they’ll have a better chance.”

• 1 15-oz can crushed tomatoes • 4 cups chicken broth • 1 large stalk lemongrass (or 2 small) • 1 can full-fat coconut milk • juice of one fresh lime • ¼ cup chopped cilantro

Red Curry Chicken Soup The coconut oil, fish sauce, lemongrass and red curry paste in this sweet & savory soup give it a Thai-inspired, very Tom Yum-my flavor profile. Vegetables and mushroom type included are really flexible. With long stretches between grocery visits, I have just been using the remaining few pieces of whatever I have in my fridge that day. A solid combo is shitake mushrooms with carrots and celery, but I’ve also had success when I was all out of mushrooms and onions and used leeks, celery and Trader Joe’s broccoli slaw instead!

• 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast • 2 tbsp white miso paste, divided • 1 tbsp coconut oil • ½ large yellow onion, diced • 2 ½ tbsp fresh ginger, finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh garlic, finely chopped • 1 cup sliced mushrooms • (shiitake, crimini, or white) • 1 ½ to 2 cups diced vegetables of choice, such as carrots and celery

It is a good idea to have all your ingredients ready to go, as there is not a lot of time between steps. To prepare the lemongrass, roll stalk(s) with a rolling pin, then slice into 1” pieces. Set aside.

Rub the chicken breasts with 1 tbsp miso paste and sear in large pot with the coconut oil. Brown both sides (no need to cook through), remove and set aside.

Don’t clean pan.

Add more coconut oil if needed, then the onion, ginger, garlic, and the remaining 1 tbsp of miso paste. Saute for a few minutes until onions are translucent and all is very aromatic. Separate any miso clumps. Now add your mushrooms and vegetables and sautee 3–5 more minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk together the curry paste, fish sauce and honey and add to pot. Shred or cube the chicken and add back to pot. Stir and let simmer for a few minutes. Now add the chicken broth, crushed tomatoes and lemongrass pieces. Stir. Next incorporate the coconut milk. Simmer until all is tender and the chicken is cooked through. Taste and add any more of the curry/honey/fish sauce combo, or salt as needed. Cover and simmer on low for 10-20 mins so lemongrass flavor permeates. Finally, and right before serving, add the fresh lime juice and chopped cilantro. You may need to advise your kids not to eat the lemongrass—or have fun watching them try.

When the The Metropolitan Museum of Art aimed to throw a party in New York along with the opening of an exhibition on visitors to Versailles between 1682 and 1789, its live arts department met the challenge with an obvious center point: cake.

The department, part of the 2,000-person workforce that runs The Met, typically works with artists including dancers and musicians, but this time the artists were culinary performers who use sugar as their medium.

Celebrated London chef Yotam Ottolenghi invites five others to create works and desserts for the 2018 opening, and Director Laura Gabbert, who brought the world onto the plate of late LA Times food critic Jonathan Gold in City of Gold, cooks up the same success here, combining the stories of the food with the stories of the people who make and eat it.

+ STIRRING BUT NOT SACCHARINE - WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE ENORMITY OF INJUSTICE?

Beyond the fetishization of the border crossing story, another life and death struggle for immigrants in the United States plays out as they labor to build the places where the nation works, plays and lives.

The short documentary Building the American Dream centers on Texas and its lack of protection for a massive immigrant labor force in the construction industry. And while it’s always easy to hate on our neighbors to the east, viewers across the country should come to terms with the idea the landscape on this topic is nearly homogenous; laborers from south and central America get the jobs done and those in power often treat them more like workhorses or tools than human beings.

Do local and state governments do enough—or anything—to ensure their safety?

Especially in Texas, where the ethos of opposition to regulations is strong, the answer is a resounding no. Filmmakers say of the state’s 1 million construction workers, half are undocumented. And when they get hurt or killed, workers and their families usually disappear in fear of consequences from immigration law. Justice seldom factors in.

+ FOOD AS ART - WHEN DOES TASTE-OVISION GET HERE?

Before he became a pastry chef, cookbook author and overall food phenom Ottolenghi, who hails from the Jewish side of Jerusalem, was first a scholar of philosophy and art. He trolled Instagram to seek out the chefs he thought were creating cakes in the spirit of Versailles in its heyday, a showplace of the progress of technology, and the pinnacle of European art and culture.

Cakes themselves, he notes, were a technological breakthrough of the time, bringing together the chemistry of refined sugar and cream into a transformative delight.

We learned an immense amount during the piece. For example, Marie Antoinette probably never said “Let them eat cake,” but it was among

Hard to believe it’s been six years since certified comic genius Robin Williams shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s even harder to believe how sensationalist the media became

the sentiments used to vilify her and the rest of the monarchy culture in the face of widespread starvation and poverty among the people. Lest we forget: The golden age of Versailles ended in revolution that came from its polarization.

Excess and opulence also means exclusion and envy.

You need not be a foodie nor a history buff to enjoy Cakes, but people with both interests undoubtedly will.

In Robin’s Wish, documentary mainstay Tylor Norwood (The United States of Detroit) takes a deeper look at Williams’ final days, running through a quick primer of a storied career before identifying Lewy body dementia as the real culprit behind his suicide—not depression, not anxiety, not substance abuse. It took years for Williams’ widow Susan Schneider Williams to make that information known, and while the fallout from the incurable disease was devastating to the actor and those around him, not knowing seems worse.

Turns out Lewy body is as vile a disease as they come, one which degenerates the brain through improperly folding proteins, one which literally shuts down “neighborhoods” within one’s neuronic connections and leads to massive amounts of confusion, self-doubt and even the rewiring of thoughts. Williams was, according to doctors interviewed in the film, quite literally a different person in his waning days, and comments from friends, colleagues, neighbors and Schneider Williams corroborate that thesis.

So why is this important? Why dwell on the death of a man who meant so much to so many? In a word—hope. The filmmakers

and those Williams left behind valiantly attempt to diffuse any romantic notion of a tortured artist, granted with a starry eyed series of reminders that they just don’t make ’em like Robin Williams; in fact, says one doctor, his rapid-fire mind and sharpened comedic abilities may have lent a hand in staving off the disease much longer than if he’d been neurotypical.

One wonders why the Williams kids don’t make an appearance in Robin’s Wish, and some interviews with neighbors almost feel like a chance for civilians to let the world know they surely had a famous friend once. But with a strong sense of vindication rattling around someplace between old chestnuts about Dead Poet’s Society and Juilliard and Christopher Reeve, etc., there’s a sense of relief.

As it stands, Williams was probably the last of his kind, one of the few celebrities universally loved and a beacon of joy for folks from all walks of life—from moviegoers and kids to soldiers he entertained at years’ worth of USO performances.

Knowing he hadn’t made a conscious choice to die, while tragic, feels bittersweet, but one knows above all else he wouldn’t have wanted the world to suffer on in the dark. (ADV)
