With regard to Molly Boyle’s “Reading the Arroyo,” I will point out that it is yet more unbalanced media reporting, which, combined with local political one-sided favoritism, and often siding with the Native American, Red Nation and three-Sisters side, has led to enabling of continuing defacing of historical statues, racism, threats and hypocrisy. Thus, Boyle here, failed to report all facts of the retaliatory battle against the Acomas; the fact that Native historian Joe Sando wrote in “Po’Pay”—that the Spanish did not remove the Natives from their Pueblos, as, conversely, was the case with the Anglo American removals of Navajo and Apache, and most Eastern Indians from their homelands to “West of the Mississippi.”

Additionally, as reported by Santa Fe’s second Archbishop Salpointe, the American Army killed more Natives during the first 50 years of their takeover of New Mexico, than the Spanish during 300 years of Spanish settlement. Also, beginning with the 1693 Entrada and throughout 400 years of Spanish settlement, there were many instances of Spanish-Pueblo military alliances, friendships, work projects, teachings, baptisms and marriages. The Santa Fe Fiesta changed many historical Fiesta aspects— and as always, kept the pueblos incorporated into Fiestas.

‘Hungry for Opportunity’

at the mural in the quiet parking lot want others to know their group has been mischaracterized by the media and law enforcement. Montoya’s well-publicized history with marijuana and gun possession wasn’t part of what the teens largely shared.

“I feel like law enforcement and the media forced this ‘figure’ on Estevan,” Ish says. “They are making him seem as if he is a killer and thug when in reality he’s just a kid hungry for opportunity. He is a proud member of SSG, a group of boys that are artists, a group of boys that are different. A group of boys that are family...They see the Southside of Santa Fe, the south side of Albuquerque, mostly any south side of anywhere is the poor side of somewhere. So we are the broke side of Santa Fe, but we are still doing bigger things, you know, they’re just, like, casting a shadow over us.”

The portable mural, intended to stand in Swan Park on the Southside, is a collaboration between multiple organizations: Alas de Agua Art Collective, Gerard’s House and the Santa Fe Public Schools’ restorative justice program. The project is meant to bring together a community broken from the loss of multiple lives to violence. (The groups plan to facilitate another mural of White in the spring.)

Ish says the recent violence is more about too many people having access to weapons than it is about gangs operating in Santa Fe. He and his friends, most talking all at once, explain that some members of the clique help pass out

wo teenage boys in Santa Fe were shot and killed over the summer, and police say two other teens were the shooters. Ivan Perez died in the parking lot in the Bluffs at Tierra Contenta on July 15; J.B. White, Aug. 1 at a party out in the county.

Police, prosecutors and witnesses say both crimes involve members of a group called the Southside Goons. In court documents about White’s death, Assistant District Attorney David Shapiro characterized the group as a gang in his argument that shooter Estevan Montoya should remain in jail through his trial.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff says the group is “violent” and “criminal.”

But some local teens tell SFR the Southside Goons aren’t that at all. They describe a tight knit group of friends who grew up in Tierra Contenta and other neighborhoods along Airport Road and who make music together under the name. They tell SFR the recent spate of violence among Santa Fe youth is not stemming from organized gang activity.

“They’ve always looked at us as some kids from the south. You know, we’ve always just been like the poor kids, less fortunate,” says Ish, who declined to give his last name. He is one of the 11 or so artists under the Southside Goons label, which also included Perez and Montoya.

Aiko, a third Santa Fe teen who was stabbed to death on Aug. 1 by his friend while the two were allegedly using drugs, is not related to Ivan. Police arrested 17-year-old Mario Guizar-Anchando for Ivan’s murder and another teen was charged in Aiko’s death.

food while others have painted murals around Santa Fe to bring more attention to the MMIW epidemic. Ish is helping organize a basketball tournament on the Southside that will raise money for the families that lost a son this year.

Flores says people call the Southside Goons and other youth groups in Santa Fe a gang because they don’t know what else to call it. The Santa Fe Police Department did not respond to requests made on Sept. 18 to comment on the characterization but the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office says the Southside Goons is considered a gang based on its “criminal activity and violent nature.”

Daniel Roybal, 19, who grew up in Tierra Contenta and attended Capital High School, says the homicides over the summer are a product of widespread possession of guns combined with fear of violence, which has created a dangerous cycle in the city for at least the last five or six years.

“We see people in the neighborhood that just live here walking around with guns I’ve never even seen before, not even teenagers, anyone, adults, thugs walking around with assault weapons on their shoulders,” Roybal says. “But I don’t think it has anything to do with the gangs. I think it more has to do

with, you know, people see someone with some crazy gun that they got from somewhere…Just a crazy Call of Duty gun and they feel like, ‘Oh, you know, that guy doesn’t like me…So I’m going to go get something to protect myself just in case, you know, this guy comes up on me and decides to do something.’”

Roybal says the Southside Goons have absolutely no gang affiliation or collective plans for violence, but that the group is about making music and sharing it on SoundCloud. Find their work by searching individual names. Ivan Perez went by “Money Mundo;” Flores uses “KoKane;” Ish is “Yung Kyng.”

Roybal hopes the city will focus on the teen center planned just across the street from the Southside Library and include activities there young people can get passionate about, like sports, music and help finding work.

The mural is a start for the teenagers and adults in Santa Fe to move forward from the recent violence and deaths, according to Mary Lou Romero, the restorative justice coordinator for Santa Fe Public Schools. She serves both middle and high schools.

“I want this to be an opportunity for us to heal and forgive and recognize that somebody did lose their son, their grandson, their cousin. And we are all worthy of love,” Romero says, her voice shaking with emotion. “Nobody deserves to die like that. Aiko didn’t deserve to die. Mondo didn’t deserve to die. J.B. did not deserve to die. And I think that’s one thing that we need to recognize.”

Staying on Track In lieu of a statewide COVID-19 contact-tracing app, some New Mexico schools and cities are striking out on their own

n mid-July, New Mexico’s COVID-19 daily case load hit 330 and its contact-tracers were taking a median average of 97 hours to reach and isolate people testing positive, far above the goal of 24 or fewer hours.

Since then, the state’s cases have continued to drop and the health department reports contact-tracers have been meeting the state’s gating criteria both for contacting positive cases and people they may have infected within 24 or 36 hours, respectively, since the start of August.

The state has not, however, rolled out any sort of digital contact tracing apps, although they have been mentioned several times throughout the pandemic as a possibility.

“We’re not there yet,” Health Department Acting Deputy Secretary Donnie Quintana tells SFR. “Our efforts have been tied to building the system… which encompasses the database, the ability to telecommute, the ability to send SMS text—that has been our focus. An application to support or supplement [the system] is part of the holistic approach; however, we haven’t gotten to that point.”

But the state has been working with other entities—schools and cities—that want to try out such apps. “We definitely don’t want to hold anybody back from a utilization of an app that suits their needs,” Quintana says.

For United World College high school senior Alex Bavalsky, finding a COVID-19 app to use on campus in Montezuma was a way to ensure both his education and the safety of the larger community. “When we closed in March, it was very traumatic,” Bavalsky says. “My closest friends are here, my education is here…I think I speak for every single student and faculty member, [closing in March] was really sad and I would never want that to happen again.”

During a series of Zoom meetings with the school community over the summer—a group that includes students from 90 different countries—questions arose about how to resume classes, dorm life and campus activities safely when school re-

nologies. As the app describes it, “by tracing interactions, NOVID builds an anonymous network of your connections.

We help you understand the spread of COVID-19 around you by visualizing cases in your network of interactions.”

Using NOVID also did not require UWC to have the health department officially approve its use in either the Apple or Google store, because it doesn’t depend on using Apple and Google’s contact-tracing API. School officials estimate approximately half of the 300-community campus have so far signed

opened. A big question, Bavalsky says, was “how do we ensure if someone contracts COVID, of which there is a high probability, there’s not a huge outbreak and we don’t have to shut down again?” Having studied computer science and as part of a school with a heavy emphasis on community service, Bavalsky offered to research contact-tracing apps over the summer while he was home in Brooklyn, New York.

“I’m really into that,” he says, “And I have a lot of free time. My summer wasn’t particularly busy, as you might understand.”

Bavalsky dove into research, even communicating directly with some developers. He decided to recommend NOVID, a mobile app developed at Carnegie Mellon University. NOVID is completely anonymous and detects when users are close to other users through a combination of ultrasound, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi tech-

up to use the app. Bavalsky did seek out and receive a letter of support from the nearby City of Las Vegas.

“We love the students at the World College,” Las Vegas Mayor Louie Trujillo says. “They’re such strong advocates for social issues.” After he heard from Bavalsky, Trujillo says, “it sparked my curiosity as to maybe we could start using this app for the organization for the City of Las Vegas.” Trujillo says that decision hasn’t been made, “but we’re exploring the possibility at this time of introducing it to our organization and possibly to the public.”

The City of Santa Fe, as SFR reported online on Sept. 1, recently rolled out a campaign encouraging residents to use the NOVID app as well. Rich Brown, director of the city’s Office of Economic Development, said at the time the city

also was pursuing a contract with NOVID that would provide the city an internal dashboard showing usage (the actual users would still be anonymous). Via email, Brown says the city is “in the diligence/ negotiation stage of our agreement” and hopes to have “something ready to go in about two weeks.”

At New Mexico State University, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Enrico Pontelli says he and others looked at the apps on the market “but most of them are very different than what we are trying to accomplish.” So he and the head of the computer science department recruited three students to build their own, an app that would only track users while on campus, among other features. That app did require approval from the health department and extensive review to ensure it abides by privacy health laws as it will be sharing actual data with the state.

Recently approved and now available, the Aggie-COVID-19 app allows users to self-report positive test results to the campus health clinic. If users enable GPS tracking—which only works within the perimeter of the campus—the GPS locations are used for contact tracing. The app also has a web version, which allows users who don’t want to use either GPS or wireless to self-report their locations.

Computer science Ph.D student Fabio Tardivo, who developed the web version, characterized the project as challenging: “There were a couple of deadlines that were pretty close,” he says, “but in the end we did it.” The app also includes a symptom checker and other features.

Pontelli says NMSU is talking with other institutions, such as Doña Ana Community College, about using its app, and has already supplied the app source code to New Mexico Tech, which adapted it for use on its campus.

Van Romero, New Mexico Tech’s vice president of research, says his institution also surveyed the commercial apps on the market, as well as the school community to ask under what conditions they would use a contact-tracing app. “Overwhelmingly, people said conditions for using it would be that the data was secure and that the app would only track people while they were here on campus,” Romero says.

NMSU’s geo-fencing fit the bill and because they were given access to the source code, Romero says, “we were able to verify and or modify the security.”

As for a statewide app, the health department did require NMSU to agree that if the state ever rolls out an app for statewide use, it will stop using its own.

“The ideal situation would be to have one application across the state and we still may get there,” Quintana says.

The Course of a Fire

Lessons from the Medio Fire

he Medio Fire burned for 28 days before the Santa Fe National Forest declared it 100% contained on Sept.

14. Santa Fe got lucky—only 4,010 acres in the mountains north of the city burned, and of those, only 100 acres burned at high severity.

But it wasn’t just luck that brought the Medio Fire under control.

Collaboration, skill and strategy on the part of the crews that fought the fire influenced its path. And ultimately, the fate of the Medio Fire was determined by the footprint of two past events that marked the landscape around the area

where lightning struck and started the blaze.

To the northeast lay the burn scar of the Pacheco Fire that tore through over 10,000 acres in the summer of 2011, burning trees to the ground in high-severity flames on half of the acres it touched.

This summer, crews herded the new fire into the old scar, where there was so little left to burn that they let the fire smolder with confidence it would eventually go out on its own.

To the southeast, firefighters guided the flames into an area the forest service and its partners had treated with a prescribed burn last year. If it hadn’t been for that deterrent, officials say, the Medio Fire could have swept all the way into the Santa Fe ski basin.

Now that the ashes are starting to grow cold, the work of restoring the damage and preparing for the next fire begins.

The forest service is already considering how to safely conduct new prescribed burns this winter; a long-term strategy remains underway. Yet in the past, one of the greatest obstacles to prescribed burning in the Sangre de Cristos has been public opinion. Santa Feans who are vocal

about the health impacts of smoke and wildlife advocates concerned about protecting the habitat of the Mexican spotted owl have thwarted some of the agency’s previous treatment plans.

Whether the proximity and relative danger of the Medio Fire has swayed the public in favor of prescribed burns is yet to be seen. But Pueblo of Tesuque Gov. Robert Mora worries that communities in Santa Fe County do not take the threat of fire seriously enough.

Mora doesn’t often speak with reporters; the tribe is incredibly private, rarely disclosing its business to outsiders. He agreed to meet with SFR to remind Santa Fe the prescribed burn that stopped the southern progress of the Medio Fire took a highly collaborative effort—one in which the Pueblo of Tesuque played an important role.

He says an even greater collaborative effort will be needed to protect this land, along with all of its human and animal inhabitants, from future catastrophe.

He has an urgent warning he wants the public to hear: This effort requires action from everyone. And it’s about time to get started.

The Medio Fire began on Aug. 17, ignited by a lightning bolt that struck a tree in the Santa Fe National Forest 5 miles northwest of the Santa Fe Ski basin off of the Rio en Medio trail in the Española Ranger District.

The day was hot and dry, and after an unseasonably hot summer without the usual monsoons, the forest was in the perfect condition to go up in flames.

Within a few days, the fire outpaced local crews’ efforts to suppress it and grew to over 1,000 acres.

Primary Operations Section Chief Eddie Baca arrived to take over command of the fire on Aug. 20 with the national Type 2 Incident Management team the local ranger district called in for backup.

In the summers, Baca travels across the country with the mobile Type 2 unit trained to battle high-complexity fires.

His home during the off-season is in Grants, where he’s the assistant fire management officer on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest.

Baca says he was surprised and worried to get called back into this part of the Southwest so late in the season.

“We shouldn’t be getting fires like this in New Mexico in August,” he tells SFR. He says New Mexico’s fire season usually starts in April and ends in July with the onset of monsoons, just as the fire season picks up in other parts of the country. Crews and equipment that were readily available in the Southwest in the beginning of the season had dispersed to fight fires in California and Colorado by the time the Medio Fire started.

“We were fighting this fire like we were in the middle of June, but without all the usual equipment,” he says, telling SFR that early on he could not get as many crews or helicopters as he thought the fire required.

The steep and rocky terrain also added to the complexity of the fire, creating dangerous conditions for firefighters and impacting how flames spread.

“Fire burns fastest when it’s moving uphill,” says Baca. The steeper the slope, the easier it is for flames to catch a gust of wind and race up the slope through the treetops.

This dynamic was at play the day the Type 2 team arrived intent on keeping the fire between the Rio en Medio and the Rio Nambe. That afternoon, the fire traveled downhill into the Rio en Medio Canyon at a moderate speed. Then, in what firefighters call a “slope reversal,” the wind picked up and carried the flames across the canyon, where it moved rapidly uphill and sped south towards the Pacheco Canyon.

Suddenly it seemed the fire might cross Pacheco Canyon Road (which becomes Forest Road 102 once it enters forest service land) and continue up toward the ski basin, possibly engulfing homes in Pacheco Canyon, tribal lands and beloved recreational areas in its path.

At the time, Baca believed the only option was to use the road itself as a fuel break to try to hold back the flames.

But the outlook for the fire began to change as crews scoped out the forest just northeast of the road—which had been treated by the prescribed burn and contained a fuel break along a ridge above.

Instead of bringing the fire down to the road, crews guided it along the ridge and eased it down the hills on the fire’s west side by “backburning,” a strategy that involves slowing a wildfire by lighting small, low-severity fires in its path to starve it of excess fuels.

Meanwhile, Jana Comstock, an archaeologist for the Santa Fe National Forest and cultural resource advisor for the Medio Fire, was busy documenting cultural sites in the area including everything from “prehistoric” Indigenous sites to groves of aspens that sheepherders marked with carvings generations ago.

SFR met Comstock along “the 102” where firefighters cleared the brush from a series of bridges built from hand-cut stone blocks in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp, a depression-era New Deal program that constructed much of the infrastructure still used in America’s public lands today.

“Our main goal during an active fire is to limit the impacts of suppression activities on these resources whenever possible,” Comstock tells SFR. She says the forest service has cultural, biological and recreational resource advisors who alert firefighters to values at risk before every prescribed burn and, when possible, during active wildfires.

At the helipad site near Nambe Falls, Lidiana Soto, a firefighter with the Santa Fe Helitack interagency wildland fire crew, and Dannell Begay, a helicopter manager with Navajo Region Helitack, tested a machine that drops ping-pongsized balls of fuel starter.

“The mountain is too steep for the firefighters, so we need to bring the fire down to them slowly,” Soto tells SFR. Begay says this machine was the only way to backburn in such steep terrain without putting firefighters at risk. National Guard helicopters carrying huge buckets of water from the Nambe Reservoir followed to help control the flames.

The strategy worked.

hands of local crews and headed off to other blazing regions of the West.

This fire may have been comparatively small, says Baca, but it is a symptom of troubling trends facing firefighters all over the country.

“The season’s been getting longer and the conditions have been gradually getting worse,” he says. On top of that, he says, people are building more and more homes in the fringes of the forest, adding to the potential for catastrophe.

The Medio Fire burned 4,010 acres in the Santa Fe National Forest. It is now considered 100% contained.

“Luckily that prescribed burn and that fuel break were there,” he says, “otherwise we would have had a really hard time holding that fire back without it jumping that 102 road and threatening the rest of the values on the mountain.”

A Tribal Perspective

Long before Santa Fe was christened “the City of Holy Faith” by Spanish Gov. Pedro de Peralta in 1610, it was known by the name “O’gah’poh geh”—the white shell place—to the Tewa speaking Indigenous peoples in the area.

The Pueblo of Tesuque recognizes O’gah’poh geh as part of its ancestral tribal lands along with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that rise up above both the Santa Fe skyline and the Tesuque Pueblo just miles north of the city, says Tesuque Gov. Robert Mora.

Tesuque owns two tracts of land in the mountains that are critically important to the tribe’s cultural and religious activities, Mora tells SFR. The Medio Fire burned right up to the boundary of one area. The other was separated from the

fire by the Pacheco Canyon prescribed burn.

“We were all holding our breaths watching that fire,” says the governor.

“When we got the word that [the prescribed burn] did stop the fire, we were happy that the plan worked, that it saved our land and that it saved Santa Fe.” The tribe played an integral role in facilitating the 2019 prescribed burn, which Mora highlights as a success. Yet in his conversation with SFR, he expresses a complex perspective full of competing emotions.

Pride for his tribe’s contributions to the prescribed burn project and the Medio Fire response is part of it. But there’s also a deep sense of frustration— the feeling of watching an impending problem emerge and having to wait for someone else to pay attention and respond—mixed with hope stemming from the successful collaboration of multiple stakeholders as the fire wore on.

best for the tribe, surrounding communities or the forest itself.

One initiative in particular really bothers him: a court injunction against burning, logging and thinning on federal land across the Southwest that resulted from a lawsuit by the Santa Fe based organization WildEarth Guardians on behalf of the Mexican spotted owl.

In September last year, a Federal District Court Judge in Arizona ruled that the forest service had failed in its legal obligation to monitor the owl and ensure that forest treatments do not negatively impact the recovery of the threatened bird.

“That injunction hindered us from exercising our rights to forest mitigation,” Mora says, explaining that it prevented the Pueblo of Tesuque from completing forest thinning projects around the pueblo itself as well as in its tribal trust land on the mountain.

Jon Horning, executive director of WildEarth Guardians, tells SFR the injunction has been partially lifted and now applies only to projects in spotted owl habitat. The organization is in negotiations with the forest service to create more comprehensive monitoring and less invasive thinning standards in those areas.

Mora has concerns about how the forest service plans to rehabilitate the land, too. The tribe wants seeds from trees surrounding the Medio Fire to be collected so the area can be replanted with highly localized stock. The tribe’s own seedbank, suggests Mitchell, could become a resource for storing seed and cultivating native saplings. Mora says he wants the tribe to be involved in the restoration work.

Mora also wants communities in the foothills of the Sangres to come together for brainstorming sessions about lessons

learned from the Medio Fire, including how to better protect the forest and the people living in it from future fires. Above all, he stresses that residents and communities in Santa Fe County need to do more to protect private properties and public assets in wildland urban interface areas.

What Comes Next

A lawsuit to protect the Mexican spotted owl has paused some prescribed burn projects in the Santa Fe National Forest.

Response team went in to assess the postfire effects on the landscape.

BAER team member Andy Casillas says floods are the most serious threat after wildfire, especially in high-severity burn scars where flames seared the earth at extremely high temperatures, incinerating the ground cover and destroying the web of tree roots beneath the ground that holds the forest floor in place.

The extreme heat also changes the chemistry of the earth, creating a hard hydrophobic layer that repels water instead of absorbing it.

After high-severity fire, rainstorms can cause erosion and send highly destructive flash floods into communities and reservoirs while the burned ground remains parched, making it harder for vegetation to grow back, he says.

Most of all, Mora expresses a sense of urgency.

“The bottom line is this is our cultural traditional place. We want to make sure everything is protected: the water, the land, the forest—everything,” he says.

“We must be proactive.”

For generations, the tribe’s ancestors used and managed fire in the mountains for their own ends and to maintain the health of the forest.

“We were told our elders used fire as a tool,” says Mark Mitchell, a former pueblo governor and now a tribal historic preservation officer who joins Mora to discuss the fire with SFR. “Back then men from our pueblo and others would go up and fight fire,” Mitchell continues. “They picked up the brush that they could into piles and lit it—let the fire creep where it needed. The fire helps the vegetation, it helps stands open up and creates spaces for wildlife.”

Last year, the tribe used Reserved Treaty Rights Lands funds to help pay for the Pacheco prescribed burn. That fund is part of a Bureau of Indian Affairs fuels management program that allows tribes to collaborate with other government agencies to complete projects on land bordering tribal reservations and trusts.

Tesuque sent crew members to cut the handline along the ridge used to rein in the Medio Fire, and sent experts from the tribe to advise the forest service on the cultural resources in the forest.

Yet, the tribe’s forestry department’s one fire engine and crew does not have the training or credentials it needs to independently deploy to the site of a forest fire outside of tribal land. The fate of the Pueblo of Tesuque trust lands are tied to the fate of the rest of the forest and the management decisions those agencies make.

AFTER THE BURN burns on more than 6,000 acres in the Santa Fe National Forest. Those plans are ready for launch as long as conditions including fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecasted weather are appropriate.

“Each prescribed burn is designed to meet specific objectives and will be managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority,” reads the announcement. “The SFNF will work with partners, collaborators and communities to clearly identify objectives and address concerns prior to implementing any prescribed burns.”

The prescribed burns under consideration between now and the end of December include projects around Pecos, in the Santa Fe Watershed, and around the Borrego Mesa Campground just west of Truchas Peak.

Another 550-acre burn in Pacheco

Canyon north of Forest Road 102 and west of the 2019 burn that slowed the Medio Fire, can only take place “pending resolution of the current court-ordered injunction related to timber management and the Mexican spotted owl.”

But those plans just scratch the surface of the long game. After the Las Conchas and Pacheco fires in 2011, Tesuque Pueblo joined agencies and surrounding communities to talk about how to protect the region from catastrophic fire. These discussions led to the creation of the Santa Fe Mountains Landscape Resiliency Project—a large scale, multi-agency plan to treat 50,000 acres of forest with thinning and or prescribed fire over the next 10 to 15 years. The plan is still in the draft stages, and a forest service spokeswoman says the environmental assessment will likely be ready for public comment by the end of the year.

a biological, cultural and recreational assessment to determine how resources and wildlife have been affected by the fire.

Due to the risks of COVID-19 and the personnel stretched thin responding to fires burning across the country, Casillas says the team only assessed the Medio Fire for conditions that could pose an immediate danger to nearby communities.

“We will be doing a second assessment prior to the monsoon storms next summer to see if there is additional work that needs to be done to protect natural resources, cultural resources or forest infrastructure,” he says.

The threat of post-fire floods only underscores the need for prescribed burns, officials say.

The same day it declared the Medio Fire officially contained, the forest service announced it was considering immediate plans to conduct prescribed

Facebook comments at livestreamed updates about the fire indicate that while many people support prescribed burns after the success of the Medio Fire, others still oppose them based on concerns about smoke and destruction of spotted owl habitat.

Yet, the conservation groups that have spent decades in legal battles with the forest service over the spotted owl say the issue is much more complicated.

A co-founder of the Center for Biological Diversity, an Arizona based group that also threatened legal action, Robin Silver says the perception that the owl’s survival and the health of the forest are at odds is inaccurate.

“We need prescribed burns to restore the habitat of the spotted owl,” he tells SFR. “Without prescribed burns a catastrophic wildfire could destroy the owl’s habitat entirely.”

Gaslighting is the New Black Black Americans have been gaslighted for hundreds of years

T

he word stopped me the first time I read it, before I understood its dictionary definition: Gaslighting.

Many people, in fact, who use the word don’t know its etymology. It originated from the 1944 movie, Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman. In the movie, a callous husband manipulates his wife’s sense of sanity by dimming and brightening the gaslights. This summary, however, can’t covey why the movie coined such a significant term.

It’s really a film about an array of ploys, tricks, denials and lies both covert and overt that a man uses against a less powerful woman until the less powerful pawn doubts herself and suffers from an altered sense of reality, sometimes disassociating by repressing the awareness that they have been brutalized. The person being gaslighted may initially perceive they have been cheated, maligned, or unjustly abused, but time passes.

It gets harder to separate a conscious awareness of injustice versus an altered psychological state in which truth, lies and justice cease to matter—or injustice becomes an accepted reality.

It’s the worst case scenario when the victimized person accepts a pattern of abuse. They give up on saying anything about it. Everything they believe is true appears unreal. The dominant reality proves they are wrong, mistaken, or worse, plain crazy.

They’re tempted to believe it.

My first association with the word— which was reinforced when I finally saw the movie—was how well it reflects a major aspect of the African American experience. It’s apt when you consider the duplicitous ways Black American

history has been distorted, ranging from a Southern tradition that downplays the brutality behind slavery to 20th century economic practices like redlining (another terrifying phenomenon wherein bank loans are denied based on area of residence), which have undermined opportunities for Blacks to accrue wealth and gain. These are underhanded practices that leave Black Americans confused (much like Ingrid Bergman in the film) or trick them into internalizing racism.

And when you measure the impact of the above alongside housing discrimination, glass ceilings, persistent police violence and all the various inequities Black Americans are often told do not exist (until they’re revealed by statistical evidence—or cell phone videos), it’s not hard

to conclude that Black Americans have been historically gaslighted.

I can personalize this conclusion.

Like many Black Americans, I experience a good deal of suspicion in so-called ritzy environments. In fact, I have never stayed at a nice hotel (paid for by my job)

without security asking to see my room card. I’ve been asked for my card right in front of white patrons who were also asked, but simply brushed off the request smugly. Yet in my case, if I didn’t show proof of occupancy, security wasn’t leaving the issue alone.

I count myself lucky because in spite of all the times I have been detained by police, sometimes for as little as walking in my own neighborhood, I have never been arrested, nor physically injured. I hope I don’t need to list the many incidences of murdered Black Americans who haven’t been so lucky.

Gaslighting for Black Americans is the knowledge that you live in a society which is capable of denying your objective reality, capable of wrongfully stereotyping or criminalizing you and capable of enforcing its false judgements. The strangest gaslighting occurs when I have literally been turned into a bogey man, scenarios in which gaslighting creates an “other” Darryl who goes places I could not have gone, like a supernatural entity. These include incidents when I have entered a bar in a strange city, where I have never been before, only to be informed I was “seen here last week making trouble.”

And some years ago in Santa Fe a neighbor who I presume was in her right mind began claiming “the Black man in

the neighborhood” accosted her, cursed her and threw large, dangerous rocks at her. I heard her story from other neighbors, who fortunately vouched for me, and discouraged my accuser from calling the police. Then, a week later, a homeless Black man who was certainly the person my accuser had encountered in reality came walking through the neighborhood, throwing rocks!

Yes, everything turned out OK, but largely because I was a known resident.

I am not at all certain everything would have been OK if I had been a stranger who happened to be innocent of a crime.

It’s another form of gaslighting that many people conclude “This could have happened to anybody,” downplaying that, for Black Americans, the security you thought you had can be negated in the blink of an eye.

Here lately, gaslighting has become a familiar term applied to national culture and politics. I don’t have a hard time understanding why. The last Republican National Convention trafficked in factual distortions pertaining to healthcare, pre-existing conditions, climate change and the Black Lives Matters movement, all tantamount to political gaslighting.

I have often been questioned by people who want to understand the Black experience. It’s sad to say that a way to begin psychologically entering it might have been by watching the 2020 GOP convention. As you feel your intelligence being insulted, as you feel your sense of security tenuously shrinking, you know you’re being gaslighted.

Puerto Peñasco In Sonora, Mexico, Puerto Peñasco is a seaside town on the Gulf of California—and in Santa Fe, it’s the anchor restaurant to a busy strip mall on Airport Road. In both places, you can expect to find an abundance of seafood, and at this Southside standby, large Spanish-speaking families (kids, cousins, great-uncles) sit at long tables or comfy, well-worn booths.

The enormous menu includes fish, shrimp and steak plates, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, kids’ plates, and some real showstoppers: market price lobster drenched in butter and garlic; piña carnaval (half a grilled pineapple stuffed with shrimp and octopus); various whole fish and surf and turf combinations.

Puerto Peñasco serves beer, wine and agave wine margaritas but no liquor, and a michelada with Bohemia ($5.75), liberally spiced with a chile-salt rim and Clamato, was roughly the size of my noggin.

Tortilla chips, a chunky red salsa, and a smooth palegreen avocado dip come gratis to every table. A small coctel de camarón ($9.45) contained so many pink, wellcooked shrimps that I lost count, distracted by the spicysalty cocktail sauce—though I longed for more diced avocado. Like my butter-splattered red snapper tacos de pescado ($11.25), most plates come with a mountain of rice scattered with corn kernels and a heap of French fries alongside a lettuce-tomato garnish. Airport Road may give off the opposite of a coastal breeze, and the fish is undeniably fresher in Mexico. But the kind service, huge portions, and welcoming prices at Puerto Peñasco make you feel at home in Santa Fe. (MB)

Market Steer Steakhouse If you’ve already finished your dinner at Market Steer Steakhouse in the Hotel St. Francis, you might not be surprised if you get a look at chef Kathleen Crook’s tattoos.

After all, by the time you’ve consumed a Crook-cooked 100% USDA Prime steak, you’ve already tasted the pride she takes in her work. But she also wears it on her sleeve: three animals that represent the cuts for pork, poultry and beef.

That’s the careful ethos Crook, who comes from a long line of farmers and ranchers in Artesia, brings to the menu at Market Steer, the decadent restaurant she opened in 2018 with partner and general manager Kristina Goode. The dinner menu is heavy on high-end appetizers with a slightly South-by-Southwestern twist, like mussels steamed with Shiner Bock and green chile ($18). Entreés include five cuts of steak, rounded out by options like crab, lobster, duck, chicken, a smoky bouillabaisse and one vegetarian entreé; the ample side dishes are ordered family-style. Sundays through Thursdays, a more affordable prix fixe menu ($55 per person) offers a few other choices. A knife-and-fork Caesar salad with a head of baby romaine, sharp white anchovies and bitter shaved Parmesan led off one recent meal. A flawlessly crusted flat-iron steak followed, topped by a melting pool of blue cheese butter. By the time the chilled Nutella pot de crème arrived, I could barely roll out the door.

And yet I was still fantasizing about what over-the-top item to try next time. Raclette potatoes? Lobster mac? When you can afford it, Market Steer keeps you coming back.

Mampuku Ramen This most excellent and most popular ramen joint with the consistent line out the door seems to be doing the impossible—getting better and better each day. Indeed, the small but powerhouse project of the Fukuda family (who owned the now-shuttered Shohko Café and still operates Albuquerque’s Naruto Ramen) seems to have found quite a groove, and we’ve heard zero reports of even one diner whose noodles were subpar.

Meat-eaters and vegetarians alike can find common ground here, be it a simple vegetable ramen with miso broth and fried tofu ($10.95) and, if you’re smart, an item or two from the sides menu plopped on top, like green chile tempura ($2.50). Our companion stressed over their options before landing on the shoyu ramen with thin-sliced pork and crisp veggies ($10.95), but noted that smaller appetites need not fret, especially with takoyaki and chicken karaage on the menu ($5 and $6.50 respectively).

By the end, sharing desserts like chewy mochi (in strawberry, vanilla and green tea) or fried bananas with vanilla gelato rounded out the night with something sweet but not overbearing, and believe us when we say that saving some of the noodles for later only ups the flavor factor.

Beyond the fetishization of the border crossing story, another life and death struggle for immigrants in the United States plays out as they labor to build the places where the nation works, plays and lives.

The short documentary Building the American Dream centers on Texas and its lack of protection for a massive immigrant labor force in the construction industry. And while it’s always easy to hate on our neighbors to the east, viewers across the country should come to terms with the idea the landscape on this topic is nearly homogenous; laborers from south and central America get the jobs done and those in power often treat them more like workhorses or tools than human beings.

Do local and state governments do enough— or anything—to ensure their safety? Especially in Texas, where the ethos of opposition to regu-

+ SWEET RELIEF; A DEEPER PERSONAL LOOK AT WILLIAMS - SHORT; WHERE ARE THE KIDS?

Hard to believe it’s been six years since certified comic genius Robin Williams shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s even harder to believe how sensationalist the media became after descending on his small Northern California community in the wake of his death.

In Robin’s Wish, documentary mainstay Tyler Norwood (The United States of Detroit) takes a deeper look at Williams’ final days, running through a quick primer of a storied career before identifying Lewy body dementia as the real culprit behind his suicide—not depression, not anxiety, not substance abuse. It took years for Williams’ widow Susan Schneider Williams to make that information known, and while the fallout from the incurable disease was devastating to the actor and those around him, not knowing seems worse.

Turns out Lewy body is as vile a disease as they come, one which degenerates the brain through improperly folding proteins, one which literally shuts down “neighborhoods” within one’s neuronic connections and leads to massive amounts of confusion, self-doubt and even the rewiring of thoughts. Williams was, according to doctors interviewed in the film, quite literally a different person in his waning days, and comments from friends, colleagues,

lations is strong, the answer is a resounding no.

Filmmakers say of the state’s 1 million construction workers, half are undocumented. And when they get hurt or killed, workers and their families usually disappear in fear of consequences from immigration law. Justice seldom factors in.

On top of fatal physical consequences, there are fiscal ones. For the same reasons corporations can get away with hurting workers, they also get out of paying them. The Workers Defense Project takes a starring role here in tackling both safety and savings accounts as a successful advocacy organization, though its members are definitely David in the battle against the giant.

We especially love the portrayal of women in the documentary—not only that one of the lead-

neighbors and Schneider Williams corroborate that thesis.

So why is this important? Why dwell on the death of a man who meant so much to so many? In a word—hope. The filmmakers and those Williams left behind valiantly attempt to diffuse any romantic notion of a tortured artist, granted with a starry eyed series of reminders that they just don’t make ’em like Robin Williams; in fact, says one doctor, his rapid-fire mind and sharpened comedic abilities may have lent a hand in staving off the disease much longer than if he’d been neurotypical.

One wonders why the Williams kids don’t make an appearance in Robin’s Wish, and some interviews with neighbors almost feel like a chance for civilians to let the world know they surely had a famous friend once. But with a strong sense of vindication rattling around someplace between old chestnuts about Dead Poet’s Society and Juilliard and Christopher Reeve, etc., there’s a sense of relief.

As it stands, Williams was probably the last of his kind, one of the few celebrities universally loved and a beacon of joy for folks from all walks of life—from moviegoers and kids to soldiers he entertained at years’ worth of USO performances. Knowing he hadn’t made a conscious choice to die, while tragic, feels bittersweet, but one knows above all else he wouldn’t have wanted the world to suffer on in the dark. (ADV)

+ FASCINATING; ANIMATED BITS - EMOTIONALLY CHALLENGING; GROSS PLAYERS

Even 4chan creator Christopher Poole eventually became fed up with his site’s propensity for the shockingly hateful, misogynist, racist and homophobic, ultimately stepping down in 2015 following the particularly nasty two-pronged controversy of celeb nude leaks and Gamergate (Google them if you must—they’re horrible).

But what became the stomping grounds for self-identified freaks and outcasts, incels and the alt.right was once an anonymous playground for the stranger denizens of the internet, the birthplace of hacktivist group Anonymous— and it’s where the character Pepe the Frog fell from grace.

In director Arthur Jones’ first big foray, Feels Good Man, we learn the genesis of artist Matt Furie’s slacker frog creation and the resultant Boys Club series of comics which inspired everyone from Tuca & Bertie creator Lisa Hanawalt to any number of clothiers, curators and beyond. Pepe was never meant to be evil, but when 4chan users got their mitts on the laid-back amphibian, he eventually became a symbol of straight-up vitriolic hate—perhaps even playing a key role in the election of Donald Trump—and Jones’ film follows Furie’s quest to reclaim his character and sanity.

BUILDING THE AMERICAN DREAM Directed by Chelsea Hernandez PBS, NR, 55 min.

Jones cuts a wide swath, chatting with data experts, psychologists, occultists, NEETs (Google that, too, if you must), artists, crypto-traders and Furie himself. Through these interviews, we gain a deeper appreciation for how quickly things can spiral, how fraught copyright laws can be and why Furie’s tendency to embody “Que sera, sera,” nearly ruined his life.

Pepe wound up on the Anti-Defamation League’s list of hate symbols, and a rallying cry for basement dwellers, conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones and horrifying Nazis like Richard Spencer. But did you know he also became a beacon of hope for Hong Kong protestors? Or that a concerted effort to bring #PeaceForPepe spawned some of the coolest and most thoughtful memes of our time?

By the time we catch up with Furie, he’s at the tail-end of some grueling legal battles and personal strife, trying to write children’s books and speaking to crowds fascinated by the speed with which he lost control. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and still a chance for Pepe.

Feels Good Man thus becomes a gripping tale of the internet’s scary reach, real-world politics and the power of art to sway the people.

Is its democratization a good thing in the end?

Yes, of course, and much like the bizarre world of music copyright infringement suits still in their infancy, it raises interesting questions that might not be answerable just yet, but will surely impact shared global culture forever. (ADV)

TUXI was rescued as a stray in Albuquerque and when his rescuer took him to their vet, he tested positive for FIV. They asked F&F to take him in and to find him a forever home. TUXI is shy at first, but will settle into a new home quite easily. He doesn’t like some male cats, but gets along with females. TUXI is approximately 2.5 years old.
