US NOT THEM I appreciated the food review about a last-minute visit to La Plancha restaurant in Eldorado. I only disagreed with the final recommendation, which discouraged people from driving “out of town” to support a locally owned, family-run business. In a time when COVID-19 threatens people’s livelihoods, here is some more “food for thought”: 1. Eldorado is actually part of Santa Fe. It is not another city, nor is it far away by most travel standards to other restaurants around town. (Cerrillos Road traffic, anyone? Driving around the Plaza and finding parking?) 2.

Let’s all try to support and admire our local places like La Plancha that are open and serving customers home-cooked meals with smaller staff, risks to their own health, and dysfunctional supply chains. I’ll happily give my continued business to La Plancha any time—thanks to their amazing longevity, good food and large menu, and kind service to those of us “all the way” out here in Eldorado! Give it another try.

Around 600 people have been tested during Santa Fe events organized by the state health department, Somos Un Pueblo Unido and other local community groups in order to reach one of the state’s most underserved and hard hit populations, according to Somos.

Similar events have also taken place in Las Cruces, Hobbs and Roswell, and they’re not the last planned here that will target immigrants, despite decreasing case numbers across the state. David Morgan, a spokesman for the health department, tells SFR officials are not “going to stop reaching out to everyone in New Mexico to be able to make ourselves available for testing.”

Ozzie Ortega-Saunders, 21, grew up in Santa Fe, and has been working at Youthworks since February. He helped make the freezable lasagnas the youth are loading into the back of each car.

“It’s really satisfying making a difference in the community,” OrtegaSaunders says. “[This testing site] is a really good idea. People are getting tested, food and help all in one package.”

Somos has assisted the Department of Health in organizing testing sites in both Lea County and Roswell as well as in translating public health orders from the governor’s office. Marcela Diaz, executive director of the nonprofit, tells SFR the state approached the organization early on in the pandemic to help the government connect with the Latino and immigrant populations, especially since Hispanic/Latino people make up 44.63% of COVID-19 cases in New Mexico, while whites only make up 14.33%, according to the health department’s data.

But Diaz says Santa Fe was a specific target because of the high concentration of essential workers in the city.

hile just over 100 people showed up to a COVID-19 testing event last weekend in Santa Fe, health department officials say they will continue to target undocumented and mixed-status people, a group that often needs extra encouragement to get tested.

Once people register and receive a nasal swab early Saturday morning at Nina Otero Community School, they move on to where the Somos Un Pueblo Unido and Youthworks employees and volunteers are ready to hand out Food Depot bags, freezable to-go meals and bright red sacks containing information about the 2020 census. Pamphlets and volunteers both explain rights as a worker during the pandemic, how to register to vote as a naturalized citizen and the path to citizenship.

Most of the information is in Spanish and English.

Organizers say a line of cars had slowed to a trickle by 9 am at the testing event, which was the third conducted in Santa Fe specifically for immigrants and their families. A fourth one is planned for 8 to 11 am, Saturday, Sept. 19 at Camino Real Academy. By the end of the three hours, 105 people were tested.

The placement of the testing sites in Santa Fe is deliberate. Both are schools within the two Southside ZIP codes, 87507 and 87505, where a ma-

Despite the administration’s stated intentions, misinformation and fears may continue to spread in Spanishspeaking communities in the state. Diaz says some people still think insurance is necessary to get tested or that the test will cost money.

According to Diaz, other questions include: Does it hurt? Is it confidential? Can this information be shared with the federal government? Is it free? Will it count agsainst me I want to adjust my status one day? Do you have to be symptomatic? What does it mean if they ask you for insurance?

At the outset of the pandemic in March, the department was slow in making Spanish language information available on its website. Morgan concedes the shortcoming.

“We certainly could have done better across the board with all populations… just on a national level collectively, we all could have probably done better with our communication,” Morgan says.

“Certainly there in March, information was changing very fast and there wasn’t really a playbook for something quite on the scale of this. Anytime you have the opportunity to be able to refine your message, no matter what language it’s in, and you have the opportunity to do better, more clear and more consistent, and being able to reach as many people as possible, we should always seize those moments.”

Diaz says Somos won’t pause its efforts.

“A lot of our messaging really is like in our flier: it’s confidential, it’s fast, it’s safe,” Diaz says. “You don’t need insurance. You don’t need to give your immigration status. You will not be charged.”

Farming Without Rain Growers who feel the impacts of drought and virus look for ways to adapt

F

all in New Mexico is inseparable from the smell of roasting chile wafting from parking lots and farmers markets. It’s a ritual Chencho Ochoa has proudly taken part in for decades as a traditional chile farmer in Chimayo.

But this year, he worries, he might not have the usual abundance to offer.

Standing behind the Chencho’s Famous Chimayo Chile booth at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, he tells SFR the absence of summer monsoons has taken a toll.

At the end of August, water Ochoa depends on was cut off abruptly almost two months before the end of the fall growing season, leaving his chile harvest half-ripened in the field. He says the brief rain that accompanied the sudden cold spell last week saved his crop, though he will need another rainfall to make it to the end of October.

The US Department of Agriculture earlier this month reported 29.3% of the state is experiencing extreme drought conditions. It’s been only two years since the last severe drought, and according to the EPA, climate change will likely cause hotter, drier summers in the future.

Low snowpack, drought, extreme heat, fire and COVID-19 compounded the challenges facing farmers this season and

spurred growers to think about how these traditional agricultural communities can adapt to future change.

In the hills above Chimayo, the Santa Cruz Lake reservoir holds the water that supplies over 100 acequias in the valley below.

In early spring of a typical year, runoff from mountain snowpack fills the reservoir to the brim and flows into the acequias and river below the dam. By July, the runoff slows and the Santa Cruz Irrigation District commissioners reduce flows and slowly ration water until the end of October. During these months, summer monsoons add to the reservoir and keep farmers’ fields lush.

But this year was different.

This summer, the lack of snowpack meant water flows into the reservoir ended early, says Ron Gallegos, the commission chairman.

On a number of particularly hot days with more evaporation than expected the water didn’t make it to final acequia parciantes in La Mesilla, so dam tenders released more water than usual, contributing to its early decline.

When the summer monsoons didn’t come, there was no water to replenish what had already been used. Then, choppers came with buckets and pulled water from the reservoir to help put out the Medio Fire in the Santa Fe National Forest just south of Santa Cruz Lake.

By mid-August reservoir levels were too low to sustain the pressure needed to release water from the dam and farmers were told the water would be shut off early.

Gallegos says the district gave ample notice to mayordomos—the elected leaders of the individual acequias—and rationed water from three days to two before shutting it off. Yet many parciantes in the district tell SFR the shutoff came unexpectedly.

Don Bustos of Santa Cruz Farms tells SFR he wasn’t notified until two weeks beforehand, throwing his operation into chaos. Yet, he does not blame the managers for the confusion. Instead, he blames COVID-19.

In past summers, he says, monthly commission meetings were packed by farmers whose input influenced decisions about water rations, and who kept themselves and their neighbors well informed.

“This year because of the coronavirus, there was no community input,” says Bustos.

Gallegos agrees COVID-19 created a communication problem, noting the district held public meetings on Zoom that were poorly attended.

Bustos says this experience and the knowledge that climate change will likely exacerbate drought patterns in future years calls for growers to formalize their participation into a kind of regional growers advisory council to help navigate periods of scarcity and ensuing conflicts.

Gallegos is also trying to surmount existing challenges and prepare for a drier future.

In 2017, the US Bureau of Land Management spent $1.8 million to remove built-up silt displacing almost a third of the reservoir’s capacity. The effort was only marginally successful.

Gallegos says the district has repeatedly applied for state and federal agencies to pay for another project to increase capacity by increasing the height of the dam. He says the project is “shovel ready,” but funding has not materialized.

A third project, though, holds promise. The district was awarded $60,000 in capital outlay funds by the New Mexico Legislature in January 2020 to upgrade the dam’s electrical systems. Gallegos says many components have not been updated since the 1920s when the dam was built.

“We’ve been trying to modernize for several years, and this year, we’re finally going to bring the dam into the 21st century,” says Gallegos. “We hope it will make it much easier to provide farmers with enough water to last for a good season in the future.”

The rain brought respite at the end of a hot day, and though clouds loom ominously overhead, the downpour is seemingly over. Everything is cool and calm and the grass smells like a dream; the energy is palpable as Ahmad notices me and makes his way across the field from the backstage area.

“If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is,” I shout to him with a laugh.

“Yeah,” he responds. “And Sol’s been following the Doppler on his phone, too.

He says it’s not gonna rain again.”

“Is everyone here?” I ask, referring to Ahmad’s new partners in the fledgling Earthseed Black Arts Alliance. This will be the first night Ahmad, Nikesha Breeze and Tigre Bailando will be in the same place at the same time.

“They’re on their way,” Ahmad answers, emitting the sort of nervous energy that never seems to leave some performers no matter how seasoned they become. The breeze blows and the music plays and the people dance.

If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.

“There seem to be solid biological reasons why we are the way we are. If there weren’t, the cycles wouldn’t keep replaying.”

Earthseed Black Arts Alliance seeks visibility, representation and celebration

Distillery’s cavernous Agua Fria location with funk, soul, hip-hop, dance jams and more; before that, its crowds outgrew the Honeymoon Brewery taproom in the Solana Center in a matter of months. Tonight, it takes upwards of 20 minutes to drive onto the field—though given AMP’s hard work to create a live concert venue/drive-in experience for culture-hungry Santa Feans, no one is angry about it—and a sea of cars reveals itself beyond the Jambo Hapa and Gracias Madre food trucks.

Nikesha Breeze winding up in New Mexico seems an inevitability now.

When the multi-disciplinary artist moved to New Mexico more than a decade ago, it was that similar siren call that tends to cast a tractor beam on artists—the light and the land, the people and the pace. Leaving Portland, Oregon, and a world of theater and film performance behind, Breeze raised a family near Taos. She rode her bike and photographed the area, she embraced sculpture and painting; and she eventually learned about her ancestors.

“Unconsciously I just felt I needed to be here,” she explains, “but the most interesting thing is that after living here for close to 15 years and raising two children here, I started to look quite deeply into my family history and genealogy, a lot of which I’d never known, and my family were some of the first Black settlers in New Mexico.”

Breeze says her ancestors traveled by foot from North Carolina, through Texas and into New Mexico at some point in the late 1800s. They eventually settled in Blackdom, a one-time town founded down south near Roswell in the early 1900s by Francis Marion Boyer, a homesteader who fled the Ku Klux Klan. According to the Smithsonian, Blackdom remains a ghost town since

its rapid 1920 depopulation, but remnants of its history survive (though you’d never know it, as I didn’t hear a single word about it in any New Mexico history class I ever took in school).

For Breeze, New Mexico’s allure suddenly made a deeper kind of sense, and for a time, she set aside personal artistic pursuits. Instead, she worked with circus/activism nonprofit Wise Fool New Mexico, becoming a director and teacher and what she laughingly refers to as “a circus clown.” But following Trump’s election in 2016, she says, “something switched radically in me—something profound flipped in my psyche.”

Whether it was an ingrained punk rock response to one of the most vile white supremacists taking the nation’s highest office or an altered reverberation to the lifelong marginalization of Black Americans spurred to ferocity by the shameless racism of the MAGA set, Breeze returned to the arts in a major way.

“My very first paintings were…I got some old doors from the ReStore and someone gifted me oil paints, old tubes, and I just started painting these images of these Black bodies who I felt were historical ancestors and who were sort of a part of me and a part of this larger story of Blackness,” she says. “They were political, but they were very personal. One was of a lynched man, another was of small children being forced onto a boat.

They all ended up being shown at the Harwood Museum in Taos.”

This became a turning point for Breeze. Arts and culture had always been pivotal in her life, but suddenly, painting and sculpture, performance and installation merged into one all-encompassing practice culminating in a sense of political outrage, thirst for justice and the belief that art can unify, educate and codify a mass movement across a region, a state, a nation.

“I caught something bigger than me,” Breeze recalls. “All of a sudden, this visual pulse began to flow out of me from a deeper need to somehow be a voice of ancestry and history.”

Now, as Breeze joins Ahmad and Bailando to form the Earthseed Black Arts Alliance, named for the late, great Black science fiction writer Octavia Butler, the opportunities to expand and amplify that voice and mission have grown exponentially. With a vision of community building and fundraising for Northern New Mexico’s Black artists, dancers, musicians, academics, et al, its actionable goals—emotional support, resource pooling, signal boosting and the sharing of arts—are thrilling to consider.

“And there’s recognition,” Breeze points out. “There are a lot of people who think that there aren’t really Black people here—and that’s a lie. There’ s a really distinct and incredible cultural contribution that Black folk have been making—and Black Indigenous folk and Brown folk…this is an incredibly rich part of our Northern New Mexico.”

“What we don’t see, we assume can’t be. What a destructive assumption.”

Eventually Breeze and Bailando do arrive at Love & Happiness. They already know each other, they’ve even worked together in the movement realm before, as recently as a Juneteenth ritual performance in Taos, but for Ahmad, this is the first time he’s ever met Bailando in real life. It’s quiet, but emotional, it’s

joyous but tempered. The pandemic continues; support for the Black Lives Matter movement has already dwindled in the streets. Tonight, there will be music, dancing, the pursuit of joy.

Tomorrow? Who knows.

But celebration is paramount to the Earthseed mission. In fact, it’s one of its three core tenets alongside visibility and representation. Back when the collective was little more than the kernel of an idea, Ahmad, Bailando and Breeze merely hoped to start by providing a support platform, a means to check in with each other and their fellow Black New Mexicans during times of stress and emotional turmoil. As the concept grew, however, the trio zeroed in on the ways in which they might still achieve support for a larger swath of Black New Mexicans.

Ideally, this would include a Black presence on boards and organizations calling the political and cultural shots around here. The Earthseed website specifically identifies Santa Fe’s Arts and Culture Department as well as potential city-sponsored art projects. As Breeze says, of course there are Black New Mexicans—why aren’t more of them in these positions? The answer, of course, is systemic racism, and if Earthseed’s call for artists and expanded networking opportunities comes to fruition, we should be excited to discover how its growing number of members can have a greater role in the future of Santa Fe. In other words, the city and state have done a shit job inviting Black New Mexicans to the table, and it’s time for change.

“In terms of the how-did-I-get-to-thetype-of-work-I-do-now? My creative impulses have always expressed themselves through different forms,” Bailando tells SFR. “So I was drawing and I was always dancing and just creating and…a lot of my lifelong struggle has been how do you balance these things and feel like there’s a kind of progress and movement, but also not get stifled and limited into just one idea?”

Bailando is the very model of the multi-disciplinary artist. From small scale illustration and line work to massive murals, improvisational dance pieces, ethereal large scale sculpture and innumerable visual experiences at festivals like Burning Man, Electric Forest and Lightning in a Bottle, it’s almost like they can’t sit still long enough to choose one path—so they may as well be great at all of them. It’s almost more like a reflex, like something Bailando must do or they’ll suffer.

some other Black folks, some music I can get down with—an intersectional community; Raashan and I didn’t know each other personally, but I admired from afar what he was putting out into the world.”

Following the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, however, Bailando says they began to feel particularly isolated.

“Not having any Black community, not having anybody locally I could connect with and talk to—I reached out to Raashan looking for anybody, and we started checking in on each other.”

Those conversations bled into and aligned with similar talks between Ahmad and Breeze.

“I’d been speaking to them both separately as we were processing,” Bailando tells SFR, “and this outpouring of all this energy and feeling disconnected…that all moved toward this Earthseed project. That all moved to being proactive about community.”

“Shyness is shit. It isn’t cute or…appealing. It’s torment, and it’s shit.”

Such pursuits have included stints on the East Coast, in Pennsylvania and in California cities such as Oakland and Los Angeles. Bailando made their way to the UK for work and to Southeast Asia. Now, Santa Fe is home.

“I moved out here exactly a year ago,” Bailando says by phone, perhaps realizing that fact in the moment. “But when I came out here, I wasn’t explicitly coming to move here. I did have an openness to that, though, and after spending nearly a decade in the Bay watching the creative culture collapse through the tech boom, it had gotten to a point where it wasn’t sustainable.

A lot of my friends and community had already dispersed.”

Luckily, arts were considered important at home when they were growing up. Bailando says their mother probably wouldn’t consider herself an artist, but she continues to create to this day. They attended an arts-based high school and went to Bennington for college. That school helped lay the foundation for Bailando’s multi-disciplinary interests, but they also selftaught in a number of arenas like carpentry, 3D modeling, casting and personal methodology.

“I find it’s easier to learn as you’re going if you have a foundational interest in learning,” they explain, “but you can’t really make up for [lack of ideas].

Something really helpful about the places where I went to school was that they were less focused on development itself and more focused on developing a mode of engagement and curiosity.”

That curiosity led them to meet Breeze in New Mexico through mutual artist friends.

“Oh, just immediately we had a rapport and really loved each other’s work,” Bailando recalls. “And I’d been to Raashan’s Love & Happiness events, and these things were amazing, especially for me because I grew up in these

vibrant, diverse cities surrounded by all these different cultures; finding the other side of this small, quaint town that’s quiet, that’s beautiful, but that maybe doesn’t have that same culture I was used to in the Bay. [Love & Happiness] was like, here’s some culture, here’s

As the sun sinks beyond the horizon, offering up those last few moments of perfect light, Ahmad, Bailando and Breeze line up to be photographed for the first time ever as a group. It’s nobody’s favorite thing and I’m trying to poke fun at the absurdity of posing to lighten the mood, but there’s no ignoring the energy shift that began the moment they entered each other’s presence.

“What if we just, like, change poses after every shot?” Bailando asks.

“That’s a great idea,” I say. “Do that.”

And so they do. It’s fun and silly, but doesn’t undercut the feeling that each creator in my viewfinder has a powerful body of independent work, and the possibilities that might come from their union are endless. Eventually I leave

them be, knowing that if they put their minds together, they’ll achieve whatever they want. How often can that be said?

“I have seen that people must be their own gods and make their own good fortune. The bad will come or not come anyway.”

“For a while, for months, it was like, ‘I don’t want anyone to feel good. I don’t want anybody to escape. This is what we’ve been dealing with for way too long,’” Ahmad says of his mindset following Floyd’s death. “And while everyone is in this moment, this isn’t just a moment for me, or for my folks…I don’t get a release from it ever, my father never had a release from it.”

Strong words from a musician who seems to carry around the pressure of perceived optimism. See, Ahmad is often labeled as a positive rapper, a joyful artist with the feel-good tunes. Maybe it’s because he’s an absurdly kind man, but for those who’d listen to his lyrics on songs like “Cancer,” literally about the death of his mother; or “Pain on Black,” a self-exploratory look at fatherhood and poverty—he’s really more of a vulnerable lyricist who brings tough emotions to bear throughout his music. It’s not saccharine positivity—it’s pain.

“Depending on the day and time, I’m really OK with people not getting relief,” Ahmad adds. “I’m OK with them not feeling good or just processing some of the discomfort that may be new to them.”

As such, Earthseed became both a means to an end, and a sanctuary for Ahmad at a time when performances are few and far between. We’ve discussed his life in previous SFR reporting (The King, Feb. 11), but looking to the future, he says, “Whatever I can do to be active CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

and joyful in these times is something my ancestors have been teaching me for years.”

Most recently, Ahmad was named the co-director of Vital Spaces alongside his fellow longtime employee at the nonprofit, Hannah Yohalem. In a nutshell, the organization rents vacant buildings and offers studio space within them to artists at reduced rent.

Ahmad has maintained an office at the Otero Street location for some time, as has teen arts center Warehouse 21 after losing its Railyard building last October.

For Ahmad to take the job, founder and former Director Jonathan Boyd, a white man, stepped into a different role within the organization, perhaps one of the stronger examples of putting one’s money where their mouth is in recent memory…anyplace.

And though it might seem like taking on a leadership role with a nonprofit would split Ahmad’s time too finely when it comes to his Earthseed contributions, working hand-in-hand with local artists can only strengthen his position as a maker of moves.

“There was a decision point,” he says. “When we were first talking about Earthseed, the conversation was maybe we shouldn’t do anything except to gather sometimes and see and talk to each other—our value shouldn’t be placed because she paints, they dance, I rap—we’re valuable because we’re human beings, and that’s enough. But this is something we actually want to do because we’re artists and because we’re together.”

Ahmad similarly describes Earthseed’s earliest days as emotional support correspondence, but with Breeze long wishing to start a collective to make a voice for Black artists and the importance of community building ringing in their ears, they forged ahead.

“Being someone who thinks kind of politically, but through a cultural and artistic lens, I wonder what’s going on in Santa Fe and what I can add,” Ahmad says. “I’m not an organizer like my activist friends in Oakland, that’s a very real thing, but I’m looking to arts and culture like, is there any representation in Santa Fe for Black folks? What does that board look like? Are we in any of these conversations? Should we be? Could we be? Can my sons? Can my friend’s daughters see themselves in teachers and in books? Can we just be out here? Is that OK? We want that for ourselves and for future generations—a crew to collectively say ‘We’d like to be represented.’”

So where does it all start? Ahmad, Bailando and Breeze launched a website (earthseedblackarts.org), enacted a call for Black artists and settled on the first action they hope to accomplish— the O’Gah Po’geh Altar Project (O’Gah Po’geh being the original Tewa name for Santa Fe), a piece on which they’re working with a number of New Mexico artistactivists and one they hope will be placed in Railyard Park.

“It’s coming out of the social justice work and the struggles and the trauma that have been going on this year that are part of a much stronger, deeper struggle,” Bailando says. “It creates a focal point to access the softer emotions that can be harder to keep present when it feels like we have to fight all the time.”

Ideally, the altar could become a place for Santa Feans to sit with, leave tributes at or just observe. A crowdfunding campaign has begun at gofundme.com/ coming-together-our-altar-project.

“And we think we’re going to have performances.” Bailando adds. “Since most

of the gatherings these days have to be put online, we’re trying to find a way to hybridize that.”

Breeze, meanwhile, plans to collaborate with Bailando and other Black artists for a durational movement performance in Taos, while Ahmad is working on a series of vignette style films with Black Santa Feans who’ll explain what their version of Santa Fe is like.

With an ultimate goal of intersectional understanding that centers and focuses Black voices, the Earthseed Black Artists Collective can become anything its founders dream up.

“Blackness is on trend right now, so how might people show up around that when they haven’t in the past?” Breeze asks. “A capitalist system benefits from our separation, and the more each and every individual has to work to make it, the more the people at the top benefit.

So it makes sense to push this idea of individualism as success building, but if we were to all work together to share in the arts and the resources and the foods and community structures and all the ways we humans know how to survive as humans…”

She trails off, but her point speaks for itself.

Later that year, when SFR’s nonprofit partner, the New Mexico Fund for Public Interest Journalism, received a grant for our next cohort of interns, I called Luke to see if he would partner with us. He said yes, and that year’s cohort produced a cover story, “Roadmap to Resilience,” exploring the center’s courses and programs on biofuels, controlled environment agriculture and green building, to name a few.

Recently, I learned that story is a finalist in the national Association of Alternative Newsmedia’s annual journalism competition. I had planned, after the holiday, to send Luke a note thanking him again for working with us.

I wish I had done so sooner. Luke died over Labor Day weekend from a heart attack while camping. “His death under the stars in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico was very quick and, to those of us who knew him well, a perfect place from which to leave a world he loved so well and worked so hard to repair,” writes Ondine Frauenglass, a lab technician in the Trades and Advanced Technologies Center.

“Luke’s left a large void,” Frauenglass told me by phone, “and at the same time, he was so connected

few months into the pandemic, I found myself thinking about the Trades and Advanced Technology Center on the Santa Fe Community College campus. As I wrote in this column at the start of 2019: “If/when the apocalypse hits, my advice would be: Head to Santa Fe Community College. There, as best I can tell, the lights will stay on, clean drinking water will still flow and fresh food will continue to grow long after the rest of dehydrated Santa Fe has given up clubbing one another in the darkened streets while wrestling over the final chimichangas at Allsups.”

I’d written those words after interviewing Luke Spangenburg, director of Santa Fe Community College’s Biofuels Center of Excellence, as well as its Training Center Corporation, about resilience, sustainability and his vision for the future. Luke was my favorite type of person to interview: smart, generous with his time despite being busy and highly tolerant of my interviewing style, which is haphazard at best. I interview people as much for conversation as information. Luke was game, and his combination of deep knowledge and passion for sustainable food, energy and society was contagious. He was also a great source and advocate for his program and his colleagues, pointing me toward more stories about people working in the college’s Trades and Advanced Technology Center

by friendship, by community ties to so many people that there’s a tremendous amount of support in trying to figure out how to proceed. We feel like he provided us with a legacy that needs to be honored.”

That legacy, as Luke described it, was demonstrating what resilience and sustainability looks like through energy and food autonomy. He was also deeply committed to educating and training the students in the program. He himself began as a student in the biofuels and algae program in 2009 and later took it over, becoming a nationally recognized expert in the field.

“Luke was a man with vision,” writes Charles Bensinger, who created the curriculum for the first biofuels and algae program and taught Luke in his first class. “When we moved into the new Sustainable Technology building, Luke took the initiative to acquire a stateof-the-art bioreactor for the lab, and he engaged algae experts from the National Labs and algae industry professionals, greatly expanding the reach of our SFCC algae program. Luke’s tireless

assistance registering students for the Biofuels Center of Excellence Grant Program proved essential and critical to the program’s success.”

Luke also sought out and championed others working in cutting-edge fields, such as Fab Lab Hub founder Sarah Boisvert, who previously operated her lab— part of the MIT-based Fab Lab Network—out of the center.

“He was such a supporter of making good stuff happen,” Boisvert says. “It was really refreshing to deal with someone like him who wasn’t embedded in the old but really valued looking at the future and looking at what the future would hold.”

Charlie Shultz, lead faculty for the controlled environment agriculture program, describes Luke as “instrumental” in bringing him to SFCC four years ago.

“He saw the value in what I would bring to SFCC and he pulled the strings to get me here,” Shultz says. “He brought people to witness what we do. Luke connected with everybody…for four years, all of my students have raved about my connection with Luke. I’m a little crushed [my students] don’t get to know him. But I’m carrying the torch for what we have planned for the rest of my life.”

Apogee Spirulina founder Nicholas spePetrović moved to Santa Fe in 2009 spe traincifically to receive photovoltaic train ing at the center, but became, instead, supfascinated with algae. Luke then sup ported Petrović setting up his algae greenhouses on campus in order to make his business—now thriving—a reality.

“He saw the good in everyone,” Petrović says, “and pulled it out of them and made them better people, but he also gave students opportunities to excel and be given a chance. He was a doer. He brought in so many connections from industry…from everywhere. The vision he had, he put forth and he did it, and now it’s on all of us to pick up that torch and keep on going.”

Were it not for word count and deadlines, I could likely keep interviewing people who Luke taught, inspired and helped indefinitely. Instead, I’ll end with his own words from an interview I had with him last year: “We’re trying to demonstrate what a sustainable and resilient college looks like,” he said. When the center was built, he noted, it was with the Field of Dreams “If You Build It, They Will Come” attitude. “Well, they did,” he says, “and they continue to come, and one of the things we find so rewarding is people are coming into these programs to change the world.”

What’s a music fan to do if they’ve grown tired of watching some Americana dweeb play a bunch of fucking Townes Van Zandt songs via livestream like that’s anything other than kind of sad? Well, it turns out Ortiz has invested some serious bucks into his studio’s livestreaming capabilities, and with new audio, video and lighting equipment leading the way, he’ll host shows with local bands that far

surpass most everything else happening around here right now (with respect to AMP Concerts’ excellent streaming work). Illegal Aliens perform at the first-ever stream.

“I wanted to do this to provide a live outlet for bands during COVID-19 and even potentially reach a broader audience,” Ortiz tells SFR. “Video is needed now and even more in the future for bands. Having this setup and platform will give them a video presence online and assets that they can use to make other videos as well.”

Ortiz also says we can expect future shows from bands like Devil’s Throne, The Blackout Pictures and Article 15.

Plus, the whole thing’s free (though you can and should totally donate to keep the dream alive). Either way, get ready for the insanity of Illegal Aliens.

Reading in the Arroyo: An Occasional Column About Books On The Wild Kindness: A Psilocybin Odyssey by Bett Williams (Dottir Press) B Y M O L LY B O Y L E @ s f r e p o r t e r. c o m

’m not a master of anything,” Bett Williams tells a psychedelic disciple who has traveled to her home in Northern New Mexico to take magic mushrooms and hallucinogenic Syrian rue with her. “I learned this on the internet.”

Like many of the nuggets of hard-won wisdom in Madrid resident Williams’ new memoir, The Wild Kindness: A Psilocybin Odyssey, the statement is accurate—but also not. It’s a grain of truth that contains a Russian doll of contradictions and countless other truths, kind of like the internet itself. Or life, even.

You don’t need to be interested in doing psychedelic drugs to find yourself in deep with Williams’ chronicle of finding meaning and healing through mycelium.

You might start by merely appreciating the book’s colorfully shroomy cover and compact, ride-along size before you dip a toe into the pleasant warmth of the free-flowing narrative.

But soon you’re swimming with abandon. You can’t see the shoreline anymore, and you don’t care. You’re out there in the wild kindness a reader receives from any great writer of psychedelia. That is, you’re traveling with a seeker—one who may have learned a lot online about growing mushrooms, but who has also done her literary and anthropological and cultural homework, calling on philosophical guidance from forebears and influences like Joan Didion, Aldous Huxley, Peter Kingsley, Carrie Fisher and the Mazatec curandera María Sabina.

At the outset of Williams’ mostly solo forays into mushroomland, she’s blocked—spiritually, creatively, romantically. She was drawn to the desert after a childhood in Santa Barbara, California, and as she drifts around New Mexico “looking for land” in the early ’90s, she meets a Scottish seer in Ojo Caliente. He

helps her cut a savvy swath through the New Age crowd and their “force fields of fraudulence, mental illness, cultural appropriation and psychic theft.”

But it still takes years for Williams to set herself on a path to enlightenment through mushrooms, and she goes on several trips before she experiences “the God Trip,” those elusive, epiphanic hours that help make sense of every cell of existence.

Even then, she writes, “I was just a beginner. I still am.”

This refreshing guilelessness is what makes The Wild Kindness so immersive. I read it on a long night’s journey into day and greeted the dawn with unclouded eyes, having absorbed Williams’ roving intellectual curiosity and lust for life. I was delighted to follow her down multiple rabbit holes; one involves the litigation of picaresque lesbian relationship drama, while another is a taxonomy of the dogs who live with her.

“She’s capable of killing a dog out of sheer confusion as to whether love lasts forever,” she writes of a brown brindle cattle dog named Rosie. A Chihuahua, Littledeer, “makes me feel bad about myself because she brings to mind Yolanda Saldívar, Selena’s manager, which I know is a wrong thing to think.” As Williams’ store of knowledge grows and she starts to make panel appearances at conferences on psychedelics, it’s easy to see why strangers seek her out in Madrid: In addition to her mushroom mastery, she’s the dynamite host of a wild, lyrical imagination.

The book casts an intensely critical eye on matters of cultural appropriation.

Williams travels to the Mexican village of Huautla de Jiménez, home of the late psychedelic guru María Sabina. There, she finds that it is not at all the place that was supposedly “ruined by hippies” after the writer R. Gordon Wasson published a Life Magazine article in 1957 about Sabina and the Mazatec people’s ceremonial use of magic mushrooms.

In Mexico, she ponders the stories Anglos tell each other about appropriation: “What do white Westerners gain from promoting the idea they ruined Huautla de Jiménez, that it’s wrong to

visit there? …Doesn’t it discount the innate resiliency of the Mazatec and how they’ve adapted amidst so much cultural change?” Williams’ constant examination of her whiteness has her feeling like “a late-stage Jack Kerouac” as she stands in front of a curandera and her daughter. A few chapters later, that same self-consciousness leads her to write a set of directives for the well-meaning white people at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in 2016 who were helping to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline (and they’re handy for current protestors, too).

“Educate yourself,” “You are not a hero,” “Be self-reflective,” “Work hard,” the guidelines sensibly read—but also, more cuttingly, “be aware that even the New York Times is cropping the white hippies with the dreadlocks screaming on the frontlines out of the picture, so even you, watching the images on your computer screen, can feel like you’re the only white person who cares.” As in all the best

memoirs, Williams’ self-examinations transcend navel-gazing to become a gift of shared insight.

As a writer, Williams’ central mission in mushroom-taking is to dissolve her tendency toward hyper-analysis, naming and assignation. She illuminates this struggle without pretense, hilariously telling her partner Beth she’s “really trying to get out of the Anthropologie store of philosophical inquiry.” But by the middle of the book, she’s already hit on the most profound enlightenment there is—that any substance “can’t compare to basic awareness and an ethical worldview,” and that small doses of mushrooms may be able to repair hippocampus cells, but blueberries can, too. The power of the medicine is in using it to see a different side of things.

he Ojos y Manos vegetable plot at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden is a terraced circle, like a giant’s salad bowl. The spice of basil lingers in the air, mingling with the scent of smoke from recent wildfires. It’s early September but the weather has already brought snow, and the New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps team is scrambling to harvest chile, eggplant, tomatoes, fava beans, corn and other veggies before another freeze beats them to the punch.

Crew Leads Mira Engel and Natasha Farmer (full disclosure: Natasha Farmer is the writer’s sister, but she was not interviewed for this story) have been working with their interns since July to grow fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs in the plot on Museum Hill (which is now open to the public by reserved tickets, btw, and well worth the trip). This season, in spite of the hungry rabbits and other critters that have reclaimed the garden in the absence of human visitors, they’ve had a bumper crop.

“The harvest is the most exciting part,” says Engel. “We’ve recently harvested radishes, tomatoes, green beans, spinach—no, that kinda got eaten by the bunnies—but we’ve had wonderful basil, cilantro and mustard greens.”

So far, the program has resulted in donations topping 145 pounds of pesticide-free produce to Kitchen Angels, the food-based nonprofit that’s been serving

the community since 1992. Daily, its drivers deliver free, nutritious meals to homebound clients and kids under 12 in single parent families—it’ll even tailor meals to clients’ dietary needs.

“We’re so thankful to have developed terrific partnerships with local organizations such as the Botanical Gardens,” says Dwayne Trujillo, development officer for Kitchen Angels. “They’re tremendously thoughtful and generous to consider Kitchen Angels as beneficiary to their bountiful produce.”

According to Trujillo, Kitchen Angels’ client base has increased roughly 10% during the pandemic as it continues to serve toothsome and nourishing meals (2020 marked its 1.5 millionth served). Newly instated pandemic safety precautions keep their clients, volunteers and staff healthy, and partnerships

with Santa Fe and Albuquerque Veterans Affairs locations and St. Elizabeth’s Shelter mean delivering meals to people who are experiencing homelessness as they quarantine or wait for COVID-19 test results.

“We buy all of our food and produce that we prepare for our clients,” Trujillo tells SFR, “so we definitely appreciate when local purveyors donate locally grown, fresh produce. That’s what makes Santa Fe a true community—local organizations helping local nonprofits.”

This year has, of course, been difficult, but Trujillo’s comments illustrate Santa Fe’s strength in times like these. For the Youth Conservation Corps workers, this comes in the form of giving back to—and sustainably taking from—the land. And the land they work at the Botanical Garden’s orchard and Ojos y Manos garden is de-

signed to educate visitors about traditions from Native and Hispanic communities associated with the plants grown there.

“These gardens honor the local community’s use of plants and their stories,” says Cristina Salvador, collections manager at the Botanical Garden. “Knowledge from these cultures lives today in local artists, farmers, cooks, healers and artisans who depend on these plants.”

Around the upper level of the garden, placards in Spanish and English tell stories of New Mexicans who have special connections to native plants like cottonwood, chile and yucca. Salvador also says they “honor the wishes of the local communities, and out of respect for their culture and beliefs, we do not translate the signs into Indigenous languages.”

There’s even an Ethnobotanical Stories Tour app featuring the traditions of the four primary uses of the plants: fibers and weaving, herbs and healing, wood and carving and crops and cooking.

Still, the garden is struggling financially this year, and Director of Institutional Advancement Lindsay Taylor says New Mexico’s COVID-19 restrictions closed its sites during what is usually the height of its season, decimating ticket sales.

“Those closures caused significant financial stress for the Garden,” Taylor explains, “which doesn’t have an endowment it can draw on in tight times such as these.”

The garden received a federal Urban Agriculture Resilience Program grant, which supports food-growing programs during the pandemic, but even with a shot to the wallet there’s still pressure.

COVID-19 has been a reality check, and it has proved the necessity of a strong, sustainable local food system that works in synergy with New Mexico’s unique cultures and climate.

As Salvador says, “By preserving and building on the knowledge passed down through families, [we can] protect and maintain valuable traditions for future generations.”

MOVIES Robin’s Wish Review New documentary unearths the real cause behind the death of the legendary comedian

Hard to believe it’s been six years since certified comic genius Robin Williams shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s even harder to believe how sensationalist the media became after descending on his small Northern California community in the wake of his death.

In Robin’s Wish, documentary mainstay Tyler Norwood (The United States of Detroit) takes a deeper look at Williams’ final days, running through a quick primer of a storied career before identifying Lewy body dementia as the real culprit behind his suicide—not depression, not anxiety, not substance abuse. It took years for Williams’ widow Susan Schneider Williams to make that information known, and while the fallout from the incurable disease was devastating to the actor and those around him, not knowing seems worse.

Turns out Lewy body is as vile a disease as they come, one which degenerates the brain through improperly folding proteins, one which literally shuts down “neighborhoods” within one’s neuronic connections and leads to massive amounts

Even 4chan creator Christopher Poole eventually became fed up with his site’s propensity for the shockingly hateful, misogynist, racist and homophobic, ultimately stepping down in 2015 following the particularly nasty two-pronged controversy of celeb nude leaks and Gamergate (Google them if you must—they’re horrible).

But what became the stomping grounds for self-identified freaks and outcasts, incels and the alt.right was once an anonymous playground for the stranger denizens of the internet, the birthplace of hacktivist group Anonymous— and it’s where the character Pepe the Frog fell from grace.

In director Arthur Jones’ first big foray, Feels Good Man, we learn the genesis of artist Matt Furie’s slacker frog creation and the resultant Boys Club series of comics which inspired everyone from Tuca & Bertie creator Lisa Hanawalt to any number of clothiers, curators and beyond. Pepe was never meant to be evil, but when 4chan users got their mitts on the laid-back amphibian, he eventually became a symbol of straight-up vitriolic hate—perhaps even playing a key role in the election of Donald Trump—and Jones’ film follows Furie’s quest to reclaim his character and sanity.

of confusion, self-doubt and even the rewiring of thoughts. Williams was, according to doctors interviewed in the film, quite literally a different person in his waning days, and comments from friends, colleagues, neighbors and Schneider Williams corroborate that thesis.

So why is this important? Why dwell on the death of a man who meant so much to so many?

In a word—hope. The filmmakers and those Williams left behind valiantly attempt to diffuse any romantic notion of a tortured artist, granted with a starry eyed series of reminders that they just don’t make ’em like Robin Williams; in fact, says one doctor, his rapid-fire mind and sharpened comedic abilities may have lent a hand in staving off the disease much longer than if he’d been neurotypical.

One wonders why the Williams kids don’t make an appearance in Robin’s Wish, and some

Jones cuts a wide swath, chatting with data experts, psychologists, occultists, NEETs (Google that, too, if you must), artists, crypto-traders and Furie himself. Through these interviews, we gain a deeper appreciation for how quickly things can spiral, how fraught copyright laws can be and why Furie’s tendency to embody “Que sera, sera,” nearly ruined his life.

Pepe wound up on the Anti-Defamation League’s list of hate symbols, and a rallying cry for basement dwellers, conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones and horrifying Nazis like Richard Spencer. But did you know he also became a beacon of hope for Hong Kong protestors? Or that a concerted effort to bring #PeaceForPepe spawned some of the coolest and most thoughtful memes of our time?

By the time we catch up with Furie, he’s at the tail-end of some grueling legal battles and personal strife, trying to write children’s books and speaking to crowds fascinated by the speed with which he lost control. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and still a chance for Pepe.

Feels Good Man thus becomes a gripping tale of the internet’s scary reach, real-world politics and the power of art to sway the people.

Is its democratization a good thing in the end?

Yes, of course, and much like the bizarre world of music copyright infringement suits still in their infancy, it raises interesting questions that might not be answerable just yet, but will surely impact shared global culture forever. (ADV)

interviews with neighbors almost feel like a chance for civilians to let the world know they surely had a famous friend once. But with a strong sense of vindication rattling around someplace between old chestnuts about Dead Poet’s Society and Juilliard and Christopher Reeve, etc., there’s a sense of relief.

As it stands, Williams was probably the last of his kind, one of the few celebrities universally loved and a beacon of joy for folks from all walks of life—from moviegoers and kids to soldiers he entertained at years’ worth of USO performances. Knowing he hadn’t made a conscious choice to die, while tragic, feels bittersweet, but one knows above all else he wouldn’t have wanted the world to suffer on in the dark.

Let it first be known that Keanu Reeves— celebrated nice guy, not very good actor and gigantic movie star—certainly didn’t have to make a movie like Bill & Ted Face the Music, but he should be commended for doing so out of what I can only assume is love for his co-star Alex Winter. And maybe the desire to have some fun.

Either way, it’s been more than 30 years since the duo originally traveled through time to complete a history report—thereby solidifying a most excellent future for all humankind—and nearly 30 since they journeyed most bogusly through heaven and hell to defeat the nefarious gym teacher/ sit-up champ Chuck De Nomolos in the sequel.

It was triumphant, but conditions have deteriorated by the time we catch up with B&T in 2020. Sure, the eponymous duo sired a couple kids with their medieval-era princess brides and put out a string of records meant to unite the globe, but they’ve still not managed to write that one all-important song predicted by the sincedead time traveling Rufus (RIP George Carlin), and this can only spell trouble.

search of an era during which the future versions of themselves have written the song, or time and space will cease to exist.

While there’s certainly a wonderful nostalgia pang seeing Winter and Reeves reunite alongside original Bill & Ted creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, Face the Music falls victim to a strange combo of overextended expectations, unfortunate additions and a confusing lack of spark. Tossing in Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Zoomer carbon copies of the heroes feels like an out-of-touch stab at harnessing the youth market, and William Sadler’s return as the literal Grim Reaper feels all too short. The same goes for appearances from newer stars like Jillian Bell, Kristen Schall and Anthony Carrigan—and there’s one cameo that could have been glorious but falls so flat it almost hurts. SNL’s Beck Bennett should have been in it less, and recasting the princesses with younger actresses Jayma Mays and Erinn Hayes just plain sucks.

It all leads to an ending that feels telegraphed and a song that is NOT EVEN CLOSE TO AS GOOD as the KISS cover of Argent’s “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll to You” from Bogus Journey. In other words, we lose the thread of nostalgia to a meandering plot full of shoehorned characters that have little to do when we could have focused on Bill and Ted and had a more excellent time. For you Aries folks, past achievements are often of secondary importance as you create your future. In fact, your mandate is usually to transcend the old days and old ways. It may be better not to imitate or rely on old stories, no matter how dazzling. This will be especially true in the coming weeks.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran playwright Wendy Wasserstein wrote, “Every year I resolve to be a little less the me I know and leave a little room for the me I could be. Every year I make a note not to feel left behind by my friends and family who have managed to change far more than I.” I recommend Wasserstein’s practice to you, dear Libra. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to launch this ritual as an annual tradition. For best results, write it out as a vow. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian songwriter Mathangi Arulpragasam is better known by her stage name M.I.A. She has accomplished a lot in her 45 years on the planet, having been nominated for three Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. Esquire magazine named her the 75th most influential person of the 21st century. One key to her success is the fact that she formulated a clear master plan many years ago, and has used it to guide her decisions. In her song “Matangi,” she refers to it: “If you’re gonna be me, you need a manifesto / If you ain’t got one, you better get one presto.” I bring this to your attention, Cancerian, because the coming weeks will be an excellent time to formulate (or re-formulate) your life manifesto and master plan.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “If you’re not invited to the party, throw your own,” declares singer and actress Diahann Carroll. In the coming weeks, I urge you Leos to use that advice as a metaphor in every way you can imagine. For example, if you’re not getting the love you want from a certain someone, give it to yourself. If no one hands you the opportunity you need, hand it to yourself. If you wish people would tell you what you want to hear, but they’re not saying it, tell yourself what you want to hear. It’s a time when you need to go beyond mere self-sufficiency. Be selfgratifying, self-rewarding, self-acknowledging.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “I may not lead the most dramatic life,” confesses singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, “but in my brain it’s War and Peace every day.” He was referencing Leo Tolstoy’s sprawling, exuberant 1,200-page novel War and Peace, which features stories about five families who lived through Napoléon’s invasion of Russia in the 19th century. I’m guessing that these days your fantasy life may also be filled with epic fairy tales and heroic sagas and tear-jerking myths. Is there a problem with that? Not necessarily. It could be quite entertaining and educational. I do recommend that you keep your actual life a little calmer and saner, however.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “I rejoice to live in such a splendidly disturbing time!” said author Helen Keller (1880–1968). She was a smart activist who worked hard in behalf of women’s equality, labor rights, antimilitarism, and socialism. Was she being sarcastic in saying she loved being alive during a time of upheaval? Not at all. She derived excitement and vigor from critiquing injustice. Her lust for life soared as she lent her considerable energy to making life on earth more enjoyable for more people. I invite you to consider adopting her attitude in the coming weeks. It’s a good time to experiment with generating the personal power that becomes available by taking practical action in behalf of your high ideals.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You know what perfectionists are: people who obsessively strive to finesse every last detail, polishing and honing so compulsively that they risk sucking all the soul out of the finished product. In contrast to them, I propose that we identify a different class of humans known as imperfectionists. They understand that a ferocious drive for utter purity can make things sterile and ugly. They resolve to cultivate excellence while at the same time they understand that irregularities and eccentricities may infuse their work with beauty. I hope you’ll act like an imperfectionist in the coming weeks, Capricorn.
