After I moved to New Mexico, I was far removed from anyone else who was “bound up.” My new friends were Navajo, Hispanic, and Filipino. Some of them prodded me with particular questions, seemingly to find out how racist I actually was...When I first learned about the debate to remove statues of the conquistadors and the protests against the Fiestas, I chose no side. One reason was because I felt like I had no say, that I had no seat at the table. Also, I felt that some Hispanics might already see me as a threat and an intruder, and if I chose the moral side of the argument then I would appear racist and oppressive. But your article made me realize that we all have an obligation to act morally, and also recognize what kind of ideology is meaningful and inclusive in our communities.

Kimball Sekaquaptewa has worked throughout the summer with the rest of the Santa Fe Indian School’s IT team to make sure over 700 students are connected to the internet.

W

hen COVID-19 forced the closure of the Santa Fe Indian School’s campus in March, Kimball Sekaquaptewa, the school’s chief technology director, and her IT team had barely five hours to prepare about 725 students for remote learning. They thought it might last a few weeks.

But as the reality of schooling from home set in, Sekaquaptewa spent the spring and summer figuring out how to get internet connectivity to isolated areas of New Mexico, where many connections on tribal lands are made on prepaid phones, if at all.

Most people who live on tribal lands in New Mexico do not have consistent access to high-speed broadband—about 80% of them, according to the Federal Communications Commission’s 2016 Broadband Progress Report.

The school is surveying each individual’s internet situation. Another reality: There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

“If we need to provide them connectivity, what’s going to work best?”

Sekaquaptewa says. “Because just saying, ‘We usually use Verizon so we are going to

buy 725 hotspots’ isn’t going to help in the communities where there aren’t Verizon towers. You have to reverse engineer the connectivity issue based on the location and network availability of each student.”

During the last school year, SFIS students without internet were typing up research papers on their phones because the school-issued Chromebooks were not as useful without an internet connection.

Others wrote out their papers by hand and submitted cellphone photos of them to their teachers.

For 12 hours a day on most days, Sekaquaptewa works from her computer at her kitchen table, troubleshooting with students and her team and working with state and federal agecies. For example, she deployed 101 LTE routers to create tribal public Wi-Fi locations for students who do not have in-home internet connections.

Despite the extreme difficulties in connecting the eastern part of the Navajo Nation and the pueblos and tribes SFIS serves, Sekaquaptewa says the pandemic forcing schools into remote learning could have some positive outcomes.

“Because of the attention to broadband and the critical need for residential internet access on tribal lands, then… if there is a silver lining, it’s to jumpstart those

conversations where we can start building emergency networks in the pueblos,” she says.

SFR caught up with Sekaquaptewa last week to talk about the effort. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

SFR: How has your work changed since COVID-19?

Kimball Sekaquaptewa: We’re trying to figure out a way for [the students] to go to school and…we have to solve for connectivity, devices and professional development for our staff to teach the technology-rich pedagogy.

Before COVID, I was still building networks and I was excited about bringing in a supercomputer onto campus and connecting with regional networks and really working on the application side of things as far as student academic experiences that could open doors to new education opportunities or career opportunities.

And then, once COVID hit, it’s really about trying to solve the digital divide in a few months by multiple strategies.

Is there anything else you and your team are doing to prepare students and teachers for internet-based learning?

From your years of work on this, what is still needed for the tribes and pueblos in New Mexico? Should internet connectivity still be a problem here?

I don’t think that the lack of internet connectivity is really a uniquely pueblo or uniquely New Mexico problem, unfortunately. But I do think that…maybe even since 2008, [tribes] really started to understand the issue and start putting in… specifically fiber optic infrastructure.

I think compared to some other tribes in the country, we’re more versed in how to deploy our own infrastructure, which is a blessing now, because there is CARES money that’s coming down to address COVID. And even the work that we got to before COVID, we were starting to do these residential [internet] plans. COVID kind of jump-started some of those conversations again. When I initially priced out some hot spots for 725 students, by the time we bought the modem, the equipment and then the internet access for a year, I think it was just shy of $350,000.

But if a tribe had been working on their fiber optic backbone and they brought it to at least a library or the governor’s office, putting up some wireless equipment and blasting that to the houses, it could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. We could use the CARES money. If we’re talking between $100,000 to $500,000 for that tribally-owned wireless network that’s permanent, it’s just a no-brainer that that’s a better solution than buying a year of hotspots which essentially disappear after a year unless somebody picks up a contract.

But like I said, many of our community members are prepaid [Internet] community members. So sometimes it’s difficult to have a credit check or even have a credit card to put on file. So that wasn’t going to be a clean transition, even if it was worth that really expensive Band-Aid to solve this immediate COVID problem.

Certainly we want to work with the tribes to build our wireless networks to provide the technical assistance to help them get residential internet, and that’s the goal.

Aspirations for housing, film and education mount pressure to redevelop campus the right way

Over the summer the developers introduced their team of local partners in a series of online presentations, which spanned a broad vision of a new cultural, economic and educational hub in the geographic center of Santa Fe they say would benefit everyone.

Yet for many Santa Feans who have lived through cycles of high hopes and promises for the campus followed by mediocrity and mounting financial woes for the city, the sales pitch falls flat.

Even more disconcerting for some is the idea that the redevelopment might actually succeed, pushing out the area’s diverse communities who can no longer afford to live there and creating another largely white, gentrified, cookie-cutter version of Santa Fe. In the wake of COVID-19, who will be able to afford to live, work and shop at Midtown?

The development plan is in the works, so at this point it’s still just a patchwork of overlapping dreams of what the campus could be, backed by an impressive lineup of Santa Fe movers and shakers.

There are basic infrastructure challenges that need to be solved first.

Developers and the city still must figure out who will maintain control of what and how much money will change hands.

No one’s talking yet, for example, about whether new water rights must be purchased. The broadband infrastructure needed for high-speed internet to support the tech and media enterprises they want to build “barely exists,” according to Bill Guthrey, vice president of KDC. But some pieces of the proposal are on the fast track toward breaking ground, and the development team seems to be on the verge of announcing more concrete plans on a few projects. The city is nego-

tiating an agreement with a University of New Mexico group for another round of public input, and several local organizations tell SFR they are getting ready to publicize their own projects related to Midtown.

As we all wait for the action to start, it’s the perfect time to get caught up on what’s being proposed, who’s involved, and what’s at stake for Santa Fe residents.

The team of local partners spent about 15 hours on YouTube describing their fantasy for what the campus could become. We watched it all and present some highlights below, as well as interviews with people who live in the area.

THE HISTORY The Midtown Campus has been many things—most recently a series of failed educational experiments.

The Christian Brothers bought the land from the government in 1947 and founded St. Michael’s College among converted army barracks. In the 1960s the college changed its name to the College of Santa Fe and began to flourish—fueled by young men evading the Vietnam War draft by going to school. With over 1,000 students, the school saw its highest-ever enrollment but fell into financial difficulties when the war ended.

As the city’s arts reputation grew in the 1980’s, the College of Santa Fe shifted its focus in the same direction and attracted wealthy donors such as actress Greer Garson and her husband Buddy Fogelson, after whom the Garson Theatre, Garson Studios and Fogelson Library are named. The Santa Fe Art Institute opened on campus in 1985. Yet, the college continued to struggle financially throughout the 1990s and finally went under in 2009.

At that point the city purchased the campus and signed a 26-year lease with a for-profit educational company that founded the Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

The university closed in 2017 amid lawsuits alleging the company never intended to fulfill the terms of the contract.

It stopped making lease payments and the city took over the property in 2018.

As the months tick by, the city’s $2.2 million annual debt payments continue to add up (by the time the debt is paid it will amount to $39 million), and public demands for community participation adds to the pressure to get it right.

Officials adopted new zoning rules allowing for more density along the St. Michael’s corridor, and last summer the city put out a call for Midtown Campus proposals from master developers. This May, after months spent narrowing the pool of 21 proposals, the city entered a 12-month exclusive negotiations agreement with KDC/Cienda that could be extended to 16 months as the developers assess the campus and prepare a plan.

The city will decide whether to sell or lease the property to the developers as part of the final agreement.

Midtown Campus is currently home to a temporary COVID-19 emergency shelter, the Santa Fe Recovery Center, the Santa Fe Art Institute, Garson Studios film production company and a police substation. A movie theater leased by the Center for Contemporary Arts is shuttered due to public health orders.

“Once we get the go ahead, we can be in business in less than a year,” said Hal Katersky, chairman and CFO of Pacifica Ventures, noting on YouTube that global demand for state-of-the-art sound stages has rarely been higher.

Education and Employment Santa Fe Community College, the Santa Fe Higher Education Center and University of New Mexico plan to collaborate on the campus to provide new educational opportunities leading straight into careers in the medical and film industries, among others.

Santa Fe Community College hopes to create a film education program in which the school would offer technical programs and two-year associates degrees in film production to train professional crews for the industry, SFCC president Becky Rowley tells SFR. The school would work with UNM so that students who complete the SFCC program could transfer to the university system to learn in screenwriting, set design or directing to complete a four-year degree.

This is essentially the structure that already exists at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, which opened adjacent to the campus in 2015 and provides a pathway for Santa Fe students to earn bachelors and masters degrees through collaborations with New Mexico universities.

KDC/Cienda partners have joined forces with Yes Housing, a company whose mission is to provide affordable housing projects to New Mexicans across the state; Homewise, a local organization that helps finance homes for lower to middle income homebuyers in Santa Fe; and The Aberg Group, a property company behind market rate apartment complexes at the Railyard Flats and Capital Flats, a new development being built on Cordova Road between Cerrillos Road and St. Francis Drive.

Mike Loftin, director of Homewise, said the intention for housing at the Midtown campus is to include options for buyers and renters at different income levels on site. Loftin said he hopes affordable housing will exceed the city’s mandate of 20%—though he said he

Rowley hopes to expand the dual credit film program for high school students, and partner with Christus St. Vincent to expand the licensed practical nursing program SFCC offers for Capital High students and add training programs for jobs such as surgical technicians.

Tim Castillo, an architecture and digital media professor at UNM, introduced the university’s plan to create a new innovation incubator called “The Aquifer,” which he described as a “center for art, design and innovation” in gaming, artificial intelligence, digital fabrication, robotics and environmental visualization.

The center could also offer courses or degree programs in art, design, film and historic preservation, as well as offer internships for students who want to work with tech startups or film productions located on the campus.

THE CHALLENGE There is more at stake at Midtown than simply whether the developers will be able to pull off everything they’ve promised or leave the city once again to wallow in debt.

A demographic map shows that Santa Fe is a fairly segregated city. Though the population is nearly equal parts Hispanic and white, the American Community Survey data from 2018 shows a stark divide between the historic neighborhoods to the north that were gentrified decades ago—where the average age is over 60, the median income ranges from $60,000 to well over $100,000, and the population is roughly 75% white—and the quickly growing neighborhoods along Airport Road, where the population is about 80% Hispanic, the average age is 30 and the median household income is between $50,000 and $70,000.

In between lies Midtown Campus.

Over the last few months, the development team has offered a vision of a cultural hub bursting with jobs and educational opportunities for locals; with bus routes that will make it easily accessible and open to the rest of the city, a design to connect people from different backgrounds living and working onsite and celebrate Santa Fe’s cultural heritage and diversity through public art.

But if done wrong, the development could instead add momentum to the cultural and economic pressures that have pushed Santa Fe’s old Hispanic families further and further from downtown.

and tastes of higher earners rather than the people who already live there.

Often there is a racial component to this process: The affluent newcomers are frequently white, and the displaced are communities of color.

There’s one neighborhood in particular that has both more to gain and is at greater risk of gentrification than any other from the development of Midtown. Separated from the campus

by St. Michael’s Drive, the HopewellMann neighborhood median household income is $36,000, and 65% of residents are Hispanic. In 2009 the neighborhood was 72% Hispanic and the median household income was $21,000–the lowest in the city.

On the Southside, public investments and amenities such as parks, bike lanes and grocery stores may be spread thin, but 60% of homes are owner-occupied and residents enjoy a fair degree of stability. In Hopewell-Mann, half of residents are housing-insecure, meaning they spend more than a third of their income on housing costs.

The vast majority are renters.

“I think that any time you have this level of development, particularly on this scale, right across the street from one of the most disinvested and vulnerable neighborhoods to displacement, it’s going to increase the displacement pressures on the neighborhood and likely result in gentrification,” says Tomás Rivera, executive director of the Chainbreaker Collective, a local community group that published a study identifying HopewellMann as one of the most vulnerable neighborhoods to gentrification in the city.

“Our top concern is not just the end result at Midtown, but making sure the process by which it gets created is done in a way that is mindful of protecting the surrounding neighborhoods against displacement pressures,” Rivera says.

The web of narrow streets lined with a mix of stick-built homes, mobile homes and traditional adobe sits insulated from the rest of the city by three major thoroughfares with St. Mike’s to the south, Cerrillos to the north, and St. Francis to the west. Closer to the campus, single-family residences give way to rows of apartment complexes followed by car dealerships and auto shops.

On the west side along the train tracks, old warehouses have been converted to modern loft apartments and studios above pricy cafes, gyms and boutiques— signs of a slowly encroaching wave of white wealth.

asks. Many are unclear about what the plans are or offer skepticism born from a few decades of watching people come in with big ideas only to see them fizzle.

People raise a laundry-list of concerns—one man worries upscale apartments will bring more cops to “protect all their new shiny toys from los barrios”— while a woman in another neighborhood to the west of the campus worries new traffic from the development will bring “unsafe people into our quiet and peaceful streets.”

Curtis Windham, a third-generation Hopewell-Mann resident, is hopeful about new opportunities at the Midtown Campus.

Sitting in his yard talking to a neighbor, Harold Garcia says he’s worried the development will impact the supply and price of water, cynically joking, “Are they going to bring their own water with them from Texas or what?”

Garcia has lived in the same house for 52 years. He’s skeptical that the new development could benefit locals, and mostly, it comes down to jobs. “Who are they going to hire? In this town I can find you a sombrero, a tamale, whatever you want.

But a job?” he shakes his head. “I can tell you none of the local people will be the contractors or electricians over there.

This is a sleepy little town, and they’re trying to force it into the future by bringing in outsiders.”

But not everyone thinks change will bring harm.

Hopewell-Mann resident Curtis Windham is enthusiastic that more retail and community spaces in the area could improve the neighborhood and make Santa Fe a better place for young people.

He brightens when he hears developers aim to expand the film industry and reopen the Garson theatre.

“I love acting,” he says, “Santa Fe needs more entertainment and creative things to do for young people. Right now there isn’t anything for the youth in this whole town, really.”

Windham’s grandmother is a longtime resident and property owner in the neighborhood, and he himself has lived in Hopewell-Mann on and off for most of his life.

Mike Loftin of Homewise said helping more long-term residents of the area become homeowners and helping low income homeowners with property maintenance costs are key strategies for combating displacement. He said Homewise plans a homeownership fund for the area, and education about tools such as property tax freezes for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners.

Michaele Pride, director of the Design and Planning Assistance Center at UNM, says the city is also a responsible party in combating gentrification.

DPAC is one of the oldest community design centers in the country, founded in the ‘60s on a philosophy of using urban planning as a tool for racial equity and justice rather than profit. The city is negotiating an 18-month contract with DPAC to design a community engagement strategy for the Midtown Campus.

Pride tells SFR DPAC will start by creating a community advisory committee drawn from the surrounding neighborhoods and the wider Santa Fe metro area.

DPAC plans a policy analysis to advise the city on how best to protect its most vulnerable populations, and based on the feedback DPAC and the committee gather between now and January, DPAC will advise the city and the developers on how to best meet local needs.

“We want to fight racial and economic inequities, we cannot forget about policy—because policy is the instrument through which racism persists,” Pride says.

Rivera of Chainbreaker says if done right, “we look at Midtown as an example of what could actually help this dynamic.”

Jamie Blosser, director of the Santa Fe Institute of the Arts and a partner on the development team, said during an online presentation that her organization is about to start a new project in collaboration with nonprofit Littleglobe called “Six Degrees of Connection” to collect the personal stories of people in all the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

“We hope this will inform the development at Midtown Campus,” she said, sharing her vision of the campus as a place where public art and collaborative art spaces validate local people’s experience by involving them in the process.

The Leap Currents New Media Festival takes the show online If ever there were a local event prepared to make the jump from in-person experience to online presence, it’s the Currents New Media Festival—that thrilling oncea-year days-long Railyard party wherein the best and brightest contemporary creators from around the globe (and our city) merge arts with cutting edge tech, sound, VR, AR, video, robotics and way more descriptors than can fit here. And since most arts and culture stories these days start someplace around “As the pandemic continues ruining plans…” you probably already know there shan’t be a physical version of Currents this year.

No matter, though, as founders and creative champions Mariannah Amster and Frank Ragano are more than prepared to take the show to new environs, and you won’t even have to leave your home to check it out.

“We lost about $70,000 in funding because of the pandemic,” Amster tells SFR by way of explaining what Currents has been working with, “but we’ve created a whole new website that is just the virtual experience.”

As Currents regulars know, the festival has long boasted virtual reality, or VR, elements, and for those who own the proper equipment, a huge chunk

of this year’s art, shown exclusively through currentsvirtual.com, will be visible through the fledgling tech. For those without, Amster and Ragano promise a robust desktop experience as well, and both means of engaging will become year-round components of the Currents brand, which has grown to include Canyon Road space Currents 821, for example.

“Once you get in there you can cruise around, walk around, and it’s also a multiplayer system,” Ragano says of the new VR fest. “If other people are in there, you can talk to them, have conversations… and it’s a new way to look at things.”

“And it’s a way to access [Currents] for people all over the world who aren’t necessarily able to come to Santa Fe,” Amster adds. “In the long run, it’s a really great addition to what Currents is.”

What James Baldwin can teach New Mexicans at this crucial moment in time

I

have visions of James Baldwin in New Mexico.

These manifestations are particularly timely, too, as Baldwin’s 96th birthday would have landed on August 2, and the Black, gay literary icon, who died in 1987, may be the most compelling writer of the moment, presaging cultural consciousness in 2020. Baldwin holds an iconic significance to Black Lives Matter activists, making it rather funny and rather tragic that his mainstream introduction to millions followed Raoul Peck’s 2017 documentary I Am Not Your Negro. (To really know Baldwin, however, please read the books.)

Cinematically and culturally, I Am Not Your Negro does an effective job of conveying Baldwin’s biography, his birth in segregated Harlem, New York, his 10year “exile” to Paris—which he undertook to escape the evils of Jim Crow that destroyed his family—and his friendships with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Black Panther leaders. Peck uses montage to powerfully connect Baldwin’s books like Notes of a Native Son (1955) and The Fire Next Time (1963) to the BLM protests of today; he was, it seems, the first truly intersectional writer.

Rooted in his Blackness, Baldwin in various writings and speeches predicted the election of a Black president (whose position wouldn’t necessarily end racism), decried the silencing of gay identities and called on America to acknowledge Native American genocide; his most singularly famous sentence appears in the 1953 essay Stranger in the Village: “The world is white no longer,” he wrote, “and it will never be white again.”

Consider: “Whiteness,” in Baldwin’s lexicon, represents institutionalized homogeneity, privilege and power.

Baldwin, then, is often likened to a prophet who also predicted America’s painful but inevitable reckoning with the past, but who believed in its capacity for redemption. Of course, there can’t be true redemption without repentance. Baldwin 18

believed love was essential to redemption—and both become tangible only after the country has 100% “come clean.”

Baldwin’s urgency resonates today in this time of national protest. And in this time, how might he speak to New Mexicans? What can we apply to the Land of Enchantment? For me, a Black American, the question is inseparable from a discussion beginning to be appear throughout the media, infiltrating family lives across the state: How can we create a genuinely multicultural New Mexico?

In June, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham created the Governor’s Advisory Council for Racial Justice and tasked the body with the mission of “monitoring state institutions and holding them accountable for ending institutional racism and ensuring that all persons receive fair and equal treatment and opportunities.” The 43-member council consists of community members from across the state who have prior experience working in fields of health, education and public safety. With notable names such as Santa Fe’s Sebastian Margaret (who’s working to launch the Disability Project through the Transgender

Law Center), Santa Ana Pueblo’s Jaclyn Roessel (an equity trainer with the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department; Navajo) and Albuquerque-based ACLU of New Mexico board member Alexandria Taylor—among many others—it’s obvious Lujan Grisham aspired to create a panel which respects New Mexico’s true diversity, beyond the standard clichés. The panel includes representatives of numerous marginalized communities, reflecting a world Baldwin fought for half a century before the harsh realities of the present day finally forced hard conversations BIPOC Americans have been longing to have.

I expect the group will engage in lengthy discussions involving genealogies, family stories and personal stories—the very kinds Baldwin forged into literature.

If I am not overtly recommending Baldwin to them, it’s because my ideal would be that members were already familiar with him!

If not, however, I say this: Baldwin had no personal connection to New Mexico. His work, however, speaks to the trials of multiculturalism, when communities in historical conflict must abide together in harmony. He was a globe-

trotter who wrote about time in France, Africa, the Caribbean islands, of Arabs and Algerians. He was fascinated by the ways colonialism and the slave trade impacted society, and though there is much to glean across his entire catalog, I would steer the council to study one Baldwin piece in particular—the aforementioned Stranger in the Village.

Recounting several months Baldwin spent living in the tiny Swiss town of Leukerbad, Stranger posits that while villagers may have never encountered a Black American before his arrival, they had already overheard rumors of savage Africans and black devils. Baldwin’s positive and negative experiences were colored by stereotypes, steering him toward the realization that he was a stranger in the village, and furthermore, given the racist illusions which preceded him, he couldn’t exist comfortably in the Western world.

He moves between being accepted, but misunderstood—embraced, yet feared.

Today, the essay still speaks to the issues confronting Blacks in New Mexico.

No, we’re not strangers in the village— we have a historic presence in the state— but that fact has been problematically overshadowed by the state’s tri-cultural identity. To some extent, Black Americans who are born in or relocate to New Mexico still ask themselves a stranger’s questions: Will my story be accepted here? How much of my identity and heritage can I bring to the table? A feeling of cultural estrangement troubles Black New Mexicans (sometimes including myself, even after 10 years here), and it’s time that changes.

Stranger in the Village ultimately teaches a universal lesson about sense of place and sense of self.

According to New Mexico Voices for Children, 60% of the state’s adults and 74% of its children belong to an ethnic minority.

There is no decided majority here. Until we achieve a less divided New Mexico, Anglos, Hispanics, Native Americans, Blacks, Asians and others will experience the awkward position of wondering—will our stories be accepted here?

The French Connection

re you sitting down right now?

Can you sit down? You should be sitting down. For I’m about to tell you something: I just had one of the top three tartines of my entire life. Not to brag, but I’ve been to France. I’ve been everywhere, man, and I’ve eaten many a tartine around this globe of ours. But the one Manon Pierme whipped up for me at her freshly opened Manolla Café (223 Cayon Road, 365-2887; in the former Café des Artistes location right at the mouth of the street)— and on her day off, no less—was nothing short of perfection.

Dubbed The Margot for Pierme’s daughter, the open-faced sammie ($7.50) consisted of fresh berries atop Sage Bakehouse’s gluten-free pecan raisin bread slathered with almond butter. You want a fresh berry, of course, and the blackberries and raspberries on this particular tartine were fresh indeed, but firm and flavorful, not a one mealy—each like a miniature berry explosion in my mouth and each mingling in delightful flavor unison with the semi-sweet bread. On the side, a little plain yogurt with Pierme’s lavender vanilla granola—she’s a granola whiz, but more on that in a sec—and, in addition, the Amour de Kale salad ($7.50), one of the eatery’s proprietary blends with massaged kale, arugula, parmesan, walnuts and peas, plus just the right amount of olive oil, garlic, sea salt and lemon. It was crisp and fresh, and I swear to God it added an entire effing year to my life.

Considering Pierme was within striking distance of kicking off a granola-based commercial kitchen some months ago, Manolla Café is a particularly welcome

addition to the Santa Fe lunch scene—especially for downtown workers. Pierme’s a nutritionist on the side, hence, the delicious but healthy granola choices, but still—why open a new restaurant at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic?

“It was just before COVID really came to the US, or before we thought it was actually going to get as bad as it did,” Pierme says with a nervous laugh. Her food’s fantastic, no question, but with dwindling 2020 tourist numbers and less foot traffic on Santa Fe’s most gallery’d-out street, she’s rightly alert to the potential pitfalls. She’d signed the lease in early March before any of us were taking the pandemic seriously.

And since then, she’s put in an ungodly amount of effort. No, the adorable patio isn’t allowing dine-in guests just yet, but Pierme offers counter service takeout—including a service wherein you can call in days’ worth of orders and pick them up at your leisure—and the work put into the space’s overall appearance is obvious.

“We ended up pulling everything out and remodeling the whole thing, replacing all the equipment...it took a lot of time— during the pandemic when no one could work—so our goal date for opening was supposed to be April 15, and we didn’t actually get to open till June 22,” she continues. “The initial challenge was to do this with a toddler, because I’m a new mom; I’m a full-time mom with full-time work during the pandemic, so this is definitely me making it work.”

And make it work she does.

In addition to the flavorful meal I sampled, Pierme also has a few sandwiches, like the Saint Marco with prosciutto, arugula and Dijon ($10) or the petite tuna sandwich with goat cheese and dried or fresh figs. And though the granola kitchen didn’t pan out, she still offers the stuff in rotating blends. This week had the aforementioned vanilla lavender, but you’ll also find almond butter crunch and seasonal surprises ($9 per 10 oz.).

Pierme was born in France, where much of her family still lives, but came to Santa Fe when she was about 5 years old; when her father, the multi-disciplinary artist Pascal Pierme, found it a promising place for creators. She’s left before for stints in California and Colorado, but Santa Fe, she says, feels like home.

Besides, she notes, it seems a good place to put down roots, particularly for her

15-month-old daughter.

“I’ve always loved to cook and I have a background in nutrition, so to be able to implement the nutrition and the culinary aspect is really big for me,” she tells SFR. “Being from France where food, fresh food, is really important. And I’m weaving in a Mediterranean style of eating as well, and a little bit of the Okinawa diet with lots of veggies and fruits and sometimes macrobiotics.”

Keeping that in mind, she says there will consistently be rotating dishes at Manolla Café, even if she’s working reduced hours right now (10 am-4 pm Thursday-Sunday). Looking forward, Pierme plans to expand into dinnertime hours, including soups on the menu and getting that coveted beer and wine license.

A lot of it is finding common ground with her fellow Santa Feans and a lot of it is in offering healthy foods at affordable prices (tip o’ the old hat for killer veggie options, BTW). Whatever happens, though, please everyone do me a favor and order something from Manolla Café. I’d like this place to stick around. K? Thanks.

Jay Baruchel’s bloody road trip

Jay Baruchel is a guy you know—whether or not you even realize it. Sure, his big thing is as the voice of Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon movies, but there’s a contingent of us who know and love him as the star of Judd Apatow’s short-lived post-Freaks and Geeks series Undeclared, as the screenwriter of 2011’s Goon and as the lead in the criminally underrated FX series Man Seeking Woman (see the inaugural episode wherein Baruchel’s character’s ex dates Adolf Hitler amid costar Eric Andre’s insistinence that Hitler is “actually a pretty cool guy when you get to know him!”—it’s comic gold).

For his newest film, Random Acts of Violence, Baruchel teams up with streaming service Shudder for a hybrid road trip/slasher movie featuring shades of neo-horror like It Follows and a gory good time laced with a supremely killer visual aesthetic and some subtle but poignant questions.

And while it might not live on in the horror pantheon forever and ever, it remains a striking entry in the grand tradition.

+ ROGEN; SOME FUNNY MOMENTS; - NOT QUITE A DARK COMEDY, NOT QUITE A LIGHT ONE

Simon Rich’s 2013 novella Sell Out was serialized in The New Yorker for a time, but its core tenets could have been ripped from the 1880s and Tolstoy’s How Much Land Does a Man Need?. That is to say, it’s a clever way to write about what really matters. In film form, the Seth Rogen-led American Pickle, based on Rich’s story and now streaming on HBO Max, becomes an adorable if uneven rumination on the importance of family, love conquering darkness and brine-based time travel.

In Pickle, Rogen pulls double duty, both as the hardworking Herschel Greenbaum and his own great grandson Ben. Herschel hails from the fictitious country of Schlupsk (not to be confused with the town of Slupsk, which did exist in Prussia) circa 1920-something, give or take, but makes it all the way to America with his wife where he takes on work as a rat exterminator in a Brooklyn pickle factory. The rats unite, however, pushing Herschel into a brining vat just as the factory is condemned, and there he lies for 100 years until drone bearing teens accidentally open the vat.

Somehow he was preserved, somehow he’s OK, somehow his only living descendant, his great grandson Ben (also Rogen) is the same age, and the two attempt to forge bonds.

plays comic book writer and artist Todd. At the tail end of a long and prosperous career creating the Slasher Man series, which he based on a real-life serial killer (in the film’s universe, anyway), Todd embarks on one final comic shop/con tour with his writer girlfriend (Jordana Brewster), his assistant (Degrassi alum Niamh Wilson) and his manager (Baruchel). Wending their way across the same stretch of highway upon which the actual killer operated, Todd becomes plagued by dark visions just as a new spate of murders seemingly based on his comics begin. Todd must face questions over the morality of violence in storytelling, the implications of a too-spirited fandom and the bleak reminder that something horrible in his own past may have been driving him all along.

Baruchel’s work in the director’s chair feels fresh and studied all at once. He’s definitely a horror fan and he’s definitely interested in taking us to the brink of unbearable tension-wise. Violence is a gory one, but despite callbacks to teen slasher

But wouldn’t you know it? Conflict!

Herschel’s not prepared for the societal changes of the modern era, and Ben, a freelance app developer, doesn’t understand his great grandfather’s work ethic and religious leanings. Hilarity ensues awhile in Odd Couple fashion until the differences become too much and Herschel sets out to prove Ben stupid. He literally says that’s his plan.

Rogen’s honestly kind of on fire here, both as the out-of-place Herschel and the emotionally stunted grandson. Disaster Artist cinematographer Brandon Trost sits in the director’s chair on this one, and it’s either a testament to his directing or Rogen’s hardwon acting experience that Herschel and Ben feel like completely different performances.

This makes for some tough moments and something akin to commentary, but it’s also telling that Rogen can coax heartwarming out of himself.

Rich, meanwhile, handles screenwriting duties, so certainly the gestalt must hit close to his vision in some way. But even after the novelty of one actor playing multiple roles wears off, it’s interesting to see the same guy who brought us the childish and exhausting Superbad teaching us a thing or two about what’s really important in the world.

Yes, An American Pickle can be dark and strange and even feel stunted by some repetitive plot elements. But as far as modern day fairy tales go, it’s a cute and engaging one—the kind of film that’ll carve out a

flicks and the earlier days of the genre, Baruchel sidesteps hamfisted for a number of deep considerations and storytelling moments. Williams, sadly, feels out of his depth here. He and Brewster flail in scenes together under a lack of chemistry, and it’s not so easy to buy their performances. Even worse, the women in the film feel like plot devices and little more.

Nevertheless, if we watch for the directorial touches and contemplate the questions Baruchel raises about what we consume, why we consume it and why we’re so quick to give problematic horror elements a pass, Random Acts of Violence works as commentary. It’s for the fans—a deep cut, almost; the kind of thing that’ll get aficionados talking.

That might just be enough.

THE FIGHT

+ WORTHY FIGHTS; COOL LAWYERS; - TOO SHORT; ALMOST FAWNING; NOT QUITE ENOUGH INFO

Filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg (2016’s Wiener on the nefarious New York Congressman Anthony Wiener) join forces once again and welcome Eli B. Despres into the director’s circle for The Fight, a film you’ll probably hear described as a “David and Goliath” kind of thing for the next little bit.

Therein, American Civil Liberties Union attorneys take on some of the Trump administration’s most despicable deeds—abortion rights for immigrants; the dreaded “Are you a citizen?”

Census question; trans folks’ right to enlist in the military and kids caged in border area internment camps. Through the eyes of lawyers Brigitte Amari, Lee Gelernt, David Ho, Chase Strangio and Joshua Block, we observe each case in intertwined fashion, meeting some of the clients, rifling through some of POTUS’ darker, more hateful moves and gaining an all-around clearer perspective about what it is, exactly, that the ACLU does.

On the one hand, it’s an inspiring portrait of

progressive lawyers hellbent on grinding themselves into oblivion if it’s in service of the case.

Ho’s family, for example, winds up taking a backseat to most of his travels and court dates, but he waxes philosophical on “this moment” with a grim determination that certainly makes one wonder how or if they’ve contributed to the fight against the terrors in power enough. Elsewhere, sadly, we get mere glimpses into the lives of the other lawyers. Strangio, for example, raises an unruly kid while trying to work; Gelernt’s lamentation on the separation of immigrant parents and children feels also feels like a universal refrain, but both scenarios are all too brief within the confines of the film’s 90 minutes.

That short runtime detracts in other ways as well, such as in scenes which remind us the ACLU will work for anyone. This includes far right instigators in Charlottesville, Virginia, circa 2017, which ultimately led to the death of protestor Heather Heyer, and a famous 1978 free speech case wherein the org defended neo-Nazis in Skokie, Illinois.

Part of everyone being entitled to legal representation is that it does mean everyone, and though the larger implications therein are countless, The Fight seems to gloss over the uglier cases in a too-quick melange of fast and furious cuts and topic changes.

As such, questions still loom large, even if the concluding moments of the film are some of the most hopeful and uplifting in recent documentary memory. (ADV)

JAXX and LULLU LULLU were rescued with their kittens, when their family moved and left the all the cats behind to fend for themselves.

A neighbor realized what had JAXX happened and took them in until Felines & Friends had space for them. JAXX is a gorgeous brown tabby cat with incredible markings and green eyes. He has an outgoing personality and seems to get along with other cats. If not adopted with LULLU, he would probably enjoy the company of another young female cat. He is approximately 2 years old. LULLU is a sweet cat and was a very good mother. Her kittens have been weaned and she is ready to move to a home of her own. LULLU is a petite, pretty, gentle girl. She gets along with other cats, so if not adopted with JAXX, she would probably enjoy the company of another young male cat. She is approximately 9 months old.

I don’t think that applies to everyone, although it’s more likely to be true about the Aries tribe than maybe any other sign of the zodiac. And I’m guessing that the coming weeks could be a time when you will indeed be vivid proof of its validity. That’s why I’m issuing a “Too Much of a Good Thing” alert for you. I don’t think it’ll be harmful to go a bit too far and get a little too much of the good things; it may even be wise and healthy to do so. But please don’t go waaayyyy too far and get waaayyyy too much of the good things.
