Hey, vinyl nerds—pandemic got you down? Do you miss flipping through the racks and finding something sweet? Have you been a fan of the annual Record Store Day event since it kicked off in 2008? If so, fret not, for though the celebrations will be smaller in 2020, the folks behind the nationwide event have broken it into three smaller days, or “drops,” and you’re reaping all the benefits. Annually, RSD provides special releases from countless beloved artists and bands that are only available at indie record stores. Santa Fe’s Lost Padre fits the bill, and owner George Casey will be kicking out the socially distant deals like a new John Prine boxset featuring his first four albums, a spadeshaped “Ace of Spades” single from Motörhead and a reissue of The Wipers’ Is This Real? It’s meant to give classic record stores a leg up, and it’s bound to flesh out your collection. (ADV)

STREAM FRI/31 CINEMA PARADISO In November 2018, the city of Paradise, California, gripped the nation’s attention when a massive blaze, dubbed the Camp Fire, engulfed almost everything in site, claiming 150,000 acres, killing 85 and becoming one of the most harrowing stories of the year. Nearly two years later, director Ron Howard (who did that delightful Beatles documentary Eight Days a Week and was on Andy Griffith or something) presents the new documentary Rebuilding Paradise on the fallout from the fire, as well as the compelling coming-together of an entire town in its aftermath. Word has it Howard spent a year with the citizens of Paradise, thereby forging bonds and creating one of the more intimate documentary experiences in recent memory. Also cool? ONLINE LECTURE TUE/30 YOU THINK IT’S LIKE THIS, BUT REALLY IT’S LIKE THIS Folks from around here (or just those who’ve bothered to pay attention) know there’s something a mite fishy about how the area’s Native history gets represented. Far too often, the narrative states that Natives from New Mexico welcomed colonizing despots, choosing instead to focus on a life of peaceful arts creation so they could meet interesting tourists and enjoy one another’s company. Lecturer Joseph Sabatini knows this is laughable, and thus presents the real story at an upcoming Zoom lecture from the Taos County Historical Society. Olla Bearers and Indian Detours: New Mexico Indians as Tourist Attractions promises to get into the nitty-gritty and paint a real picture of how white people flipped the script to make a few bucks. If nothing else, folks might ditch some of the hapless racism and get a clearer idea of why things are the way they are. ART OPENING FRI/31

Beads and Pulp Mikayla Patton takes a cue from the great outdoors “I was planning on having quite a few pieces done, but then my residency [at the School for Advanced Research] started and I ended up putting a lot of things on the back burner,” Mikayla Patton (Oglala Lakota) tells SFR, as if the works in her upcoming Hecho a Mano show aren’t enough on their own—or aren’t incredible. When the COVID-19 lockdown kicked into high gear, Patton found herself with limited resources and sequestered in her small Santa Fe apartment. Perhaps better known as a printmaker and jewelry designer, Patton pivoted to beadwork, both as a style she’d always wanted to master, and as a painstaking process to help keep her mind off the end of the world. That, along with paper she makes herself, became a full-time project, and small pieces based on the environment were born. “It was getting warm outside, and all I really wanted to do was be outside, but it felt like we were forced inside,” she says. “It felt weird, I needed nature in my life, so I focused my designs off of landscapes and sky.” Take “Red and Copper,” a simple but evocative design that Patton says recalls the sun hitting the land near Gallup.

“I found it really beautiful,” she explains, “especially in the evening time when the sun beams off the red rocks and makes everything more red and coppery.” Find also, among others, “Rain Cloud,” an aspirational piece conceived when Patton started the SAR residency and could let the outdoors in more. With gradient shades of greens and blues meshing into one striking design, Patton says she’s considering the late summer rains, but “the trees where I’m seeing these tones of green and where the leaves are fried out from the sun to almost a lime kind of green…the sky in the background; just playing with these colors, I was experiencing it for myself.” Patton says she’d like to scale her bead and paper works up in the future, assuming she has the right kind of space and the resources to complete pieces as she sees fit. In the meantime, new works go on view at Hecho a Mano this week, and owner Frank Rose says patrons will be allowed in four at a time—masks required. (Alex De Vore) NEW WORKS BY MIKAYLA PATTON 5-7 pm Friday, July 31. Free. Hecho a Mano, 830 Canyon Road, 913-1341

AOC, for example, screams “powerful woman,” and she’s well-known for painting powerful women from around the world, famous or not), and while such aspects are certainly present, this year’s cover should easily expand any simplistic ideas that a woman painting women is solely feminist. Herrera’s essence catapults Currier firmly into the “humanist” camp, instead. She sees what others miss and finds something living on the canvas; she’s drawn to more ethereal presences than power or fame. We spoke with Currier to learn more about this year’s cover and how she managed to choose it from a staggering body of work. SFR: Let’s talk about the cover art in a broad sense. What about it says “Best of Santa Fe” to you? Erin Currier: I’ve seen the world’s greatest works of art, and I’ve been all over the world, but I still feel some of the best work in the world is from New Mexico. It’s my favorite in the world and, specifically,

How did you select this piece amongst so many others? Santa Fe and New Mexico are more about heart than other cities, I think. There’s still bartering here and sharing, there’s a real sense of community. I’ve found artists really support one another here. This piece also represents that. I think—I hope—I wanted to convey and capture a sense of his humility. That Nicholas is confident yet humble and compassionate. I think if you can generalize about a city and an arts community, those are some of the most positive qualities we have.

etting out to choose an artist to create our Best of Santa Fe cover each year is never an easy task. As it stands, we probably couldn’t even count the number of talented local creatives we know and admire if we wanted to, and though we’re always beyond pleased in the end, the selection process is torturous. In recent years, we’ve seen custom work from Future Fantasy Delight mastermind Nico Salazar, a wildly popular jackalope illustration from tattooer Marie Sena and a dense and lush naturalistic piece from painter Sienna Luna. This year’s cover artist, Erin Currier, stands with them as another example of excellence. Dubbed “Saint. Nicholas Herrera,” Currier’s piece showcases her close friend, the multi-media artist, bultero and santero Nicholas Herrera. Gently holding a human heart, Herrera—whose work can be seen at Evoke Contemporary— cuts a rather empathetic figure. Currier implies much in his expression, somehow capturing a sense of the everyman. We

knew it was the right artwork for the job the moment we saw it. If you’re reading this, please flip to the front cover (or scroll to the top) of the page. Drink it in. Look Herrera in the eye and note the peripheral detail, such as saintthemed playing cards forming a halo, almost hidden Lotería cards and Currier’s regular use of discarded packaging materials. We think it shouts Santa Fe from the mountain; we think Herrera’s the type of guy we all recognize if we live here. Most of the magic of this city is in its people. Ask anyone who’s moved around a lot, and they’ll tell you that’s why Santa Fe remains home base, or at least a fond memory burning brightly whenever they find themselves elsewhere. We’re tradition meets contemporary in an imperfect melange of ancient history and cutting edge artistry. “Saint. Nicholas Herrera” has that in spades. It would be easy to identify Currier’s work as feminist (a recent portrait of

ancestors have used for hundreds of years, the same wood, the same pigment, yet he infuses it with this tragic comedy, and highlights political issues he’s passionate about and makes it very relevant and up to the minute. It’s also ecological at the same time. Nicholas and a lot of these artists we’re talking about, like Native potters who craft work from the clays and the dirt and the soil, and bulteros who use discarded wood—as a trash artist, I feel a kinship with all of these artists. Artists have used materials close at hand for so many years, and for me, my generation, that happens to be trash. Nicholas totally embodies all of this. He’s a lowrider and rebuilds old cars, and he’ll used rusted-out carburetors in his work. He’s a trash artist, a bultero, a santero…he’s internationally renowned as well. His work, it’s of the human spirit. He doesn’t do anything for fame or glory or recognition. That’s another thing I love about all these New Mexico artists I know, like Arthur Lopez or the Romeros—they don’t give a shit about being international art stars, they’re all about love and friends and family and their connection to spirit. I think in New Mexico, in general, the art scene is unique for that reason.

art that follows in these traditions, these lineages—like the Hispanic contemporary art and Native contemporary art that’s rooted in lineages that date back hundreds of years. It’s made from the heart, and it’s far more inspiring to me than the post-modern work of a big city, and yet it holds its own. Luis Tapia, Cara and Diego Romero and Nicholas Herrera fall into this category. [Nicholas] has been using the materials close at hand that his

You could probably operate anyplace in the world, and you’ve been known to travel extensively. What makes Santa Fe home? I’m always happy to come back here. It’ll sound very cliché, but the huge open sky, the light, the sunshine, the community. Like I said earlier, I love the people. I think there’s also this rogue, rebellious nature in New Mexico. I don’t know how to say it exactly, but people here are original thinkers. To this day, Santa Fe persists in doing things its own way. There’s so many different scenes here, from the strong culture of the pueblos to the hippie communes to the lowrider culture, the UFC culture in Albuquerque and on and on. I love it all. And the green chile.

ou want a tough job? Try keeping it posi in the era of COVID-19. Schools are shuttered, businesses are struggling, everyone's sick of their own homes and every day seems to bring something weirder to our collective doorstep (like SFR being unable to host the biggest party of the year in the Railyard as we usually do around this time). But then a funny thing happened—we started writing and editing the 2020 Best of Santa Fe issue, and things began to feel better. It's a celebration, of course. A reminder that even in the darkest of times, Santa Fe turns up for Santa Fe. As we remembered why we love local restaurants, we started ordering more takeout; as we pondered what pet groomers mean to our lives and the lives of our pets, we started petting them more; as we popped on the recent Raashan Ahmad album The Sun, we felt more human. But the following are your favorites, Santa Fe, so here's hoping reading through them might make you feel better. We know it helped us. *Public health orders change unpredictably and we didn't explain how each winner might be affected. Please call ahead.

BEST BURGER Santa Fe Bite Names and locations may have changed for this Santa Fe staple but…

it’s back and what has not changed is its damn fine burger. You love the green chile cheeseburger, you love the bacon green chile cheeseburger, you love that you can get beans (two kinds!) with your burger, you love the gluten-free buns, you even love the house-made veggie burger! But what you love most of all is the friendly service that Santa Fe Bite, in whichever incarnation, has also been serving up since 1959. 1616 St. Michaels Drive, 428-0328 santafebite.com

The Burger Stand @ Burro Alley The Burger Stand has obviously succeeded in its quest to elevate the common burger. If Best of Santa Fe also had a category for “Best Fries” we have a strong suspicion The Burger Stand would again be among your favorites. Delicious burgers, best fries ever and top-tier people watching: a winning combination. 207 W San Francisco St., 395-8210 burgerstandnm.com

Shake Foundation Some say the secret to success in the restaurant industry is to keep it simple. This would explain the success of Shake Foundation, because it provides the juicy burger and then lets you go nuts with your pick of simply delicious stuff to put on it. Case in point: Where else can you top your burger with whipped lardo? 631 Cerrillos Road, 988-8992 shakefoundation.com

BEST CHEF Ahmed Obo - Jambo Café In the 11 years Jambo Cafe has graced us with its mouthwatering mix of

2010 Cerrillos Road, 473-1269 jambocafe.net

Martín Rios - Restaurant Martín Martín Rios’ reputation for fine chefery is obviously well-known and appreciated around these parts—and beyond. In addition to multiple James Beard nominations, and the creative, seasonal dishes he serves up at Restaurant Martín, Rios and his wife Jennifer are passionate supporters of equines in need at The Horse Shelter. 526 Galisteo St., 820-0919 restaurantmartin.com

Kathleen Crook - Market Steer You voted Market Steer “Best New Restaurant” last year and apparently that excitement hasn’t faded. Chef and co-owner Kathleen Crook knows her way around beef, from cooking it to roping it; in addition to being a highly trained chef, she’s also a rodeo-roping world champion. Talk about earning her chops! 210 Don Gaspar Avenue, 992-6354 marketsteersteakhouse.com

BEST CHILE La Choza No surprise here. The Carswell family has been serving up some of the area’s favorite food—and, obviously, chile—for longer than some of us have been alive. In that time, they’ve achieved a certain level of perfection that keep them packed even at lunch on a Tuesday. La Choza’s chile isn’t just a favorite pool for food to swim in, it’s the base for one of La Choza’s most-ordered dishes: chunky, spicy, Vitamin C-packed green chile stew. 905 Alarid St., 982-0909 lachozasf.com

The Shed Hey, look! Another instance of not being surprised. Being that The Shed is the “mother” restaurant of La Choza, you get the same delicious chile, just in a different setting. One of our favorite places to watch tourists sweat! 113 Palace Ave., 982-9030 sfshed.com

Tomasita’s Like The Shed and La Choza, Tomasita’s has been around a long time and it shows, especially in its chile. It’s sort of like you have to have been around at least 30 years to even claim you’ve got some of the best. Young 'uns: Don’t even try to compete.

BEST FERMENTED FOODS

Rowley Farmhouse Ales Take some smarty-pants chemists who love beer, let ’em loose, and you get Rowley Farmhouse Ales. This small brewery just off Cerrillos Road is big news in the beer world, taking home the most medals of any single brewery at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival. The sour-style ales may be what Rowley is known for in the bigger world, but here at home we love Rowley not just for its fascinating fermentations, but also for offering up an extensive list of international beers and a menu of creative, gut-busting gastro-pub fare. 1405 Maclovia St., 428-0719 rowleyfarmhouse.com

HoneyMoon Brewery: Hard Kombucha Brewery Sunset Magazine called HoneyMoon’s hard kombucha “buzzworthy,” and you apparently think so too. BEST FRITO PIE

KATHERINE LEWIN

The Compound In the 20 years chef Mark Kiffin has owned The Compound, he’s amassed

awards ranging from James Beard to the Edible New Mexico Local Hero—not to mention appearing here as your “tops” a multitude of times.

Five & Dime General Store We all know Anthony Bourdain, bless his heart, made this Frito pie famous by ripping into it—and not in the way a Frito pie is meant to be ripped into. But Bourdain issued a mea culpa and everyone was back to celebrating the local Five & Dime favorite. Aside from eating the tasty, gooey concoction, one of the best things about this moveable Frito feast is watching other people try and eat it. 58 E San Francisco St., 992-1800 fiveanddimegs.com

El Parasol Both of El Parasol’s Santa Fe locations serve up a hefty Frito pie with lots of beefy, whole bean chili. While it’s hard to say just what makes one Frito pie better than another, in this case it’s got to be El Parasol’s spectacular red chile. 1833 Cerrillos Road, 995-8015; 298 Dinosaur Trail, 995-8226 elparasol.com

Plaza Cafe Southside What doesn’t Plaza Cafe Southside offer? Their something-for-everyone approach extends to the Frito pie,

which can be ordered full-on carnivore style with your choice of steak, beef or chicken or—gasp!—vegetarian with calabacitas and beans or Impossible meat. The vegetarians thank you! 3466 Zafarano Drive, 424-0755 santafeplazacafe.com

BEST HAPPY HOUR Cowgirl BBQ Why is it called happy hour when really, it’s happy “hours?” As in the case of your favorite happy hour-ing spot, this means Monday through Friday from 3-6 pm you’re likely enjoying a $4 draft beer or $4.50 house margarita. Considering the Cowgirl also has one of your favorite patios, you’ve probably put in a lot of happy hours there. 319 S Guadalupe St., 982-2565 cowgirlsantafe.com

The Dragon Room The second best thing about the Dragon Room—because obviously daily 4-7 pm happy hour with $5 drinks and 15% off the extensive bar menu is the first best thing—is that monkey chandelier. 406 Old Santa Fe Trail, 983-7712 thepinkadobe.com/dragonroom.php

Baskin-Robbins For most of us, Baskin Robbins (which opened in 1945) ice cream is a tale as old as time. BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT Piccolino This family owned, family-style Italian joint may be small, but pretty much nothing else about it is: The portions are huge, as is the menu. Getting though Piccolino’s menu is an exercise in itself—there are 15 seafood dishes, 17 chicken dishes, and we’re betting from among Piccolino’s three lasagna choices that the Lasagna Bolloco, a green chile chicken Alfredo lasagna, is one of your faves. 2980 Agua Fría St., 471-1480 piccolinosantafe.com

Andiamo! Andiamo’s Italian-influenced, Farmer’s Market-inspired fresh fare is always delicious and always interesting. The seasonal menu is pareddown and intense, which makes it one of those places you just have to keep going back to again and again so you can try it all. You probably do this, too. 322 Garfield St., 995-9595 andiamosantafe.com

WINERY

Gruet Winery Gruet is the granddaddy of New Mexico wineries, growing into a national powerhouse on the shoulders of Gilbert Gruet and his 1984 leap of faith from France to New Mexico. Sure, you can buy Gruet pretty much anywhere in the US, but it just tastes better in the Santa Fe tasting room. For some reason, the sauvage is more savage and the still wines more playful here. Maybe it’s the altitude.

Black Mesa Winery One of the winningest wineries in local competitions, Black Mesa is known for its estate-grown varietals as well as ports and dessert wines. While some wine fanciers will claim New Mexico wine is too sweet, the local experts know there’s a reason for that: The spicier the chile, the sweeter the wine. 1502 Hwy. 68, Velarde, 852-2820 blackmesawinery.com

Noisy Water Winery How one winery can produce so many varietals is mind-boggling. But it does bode well for those who like to have choices, and creative ones at that. BEST PIZZA Back Road Pizza The folks at Back Road Pizza sure know how to crisp a crust. In fact, the crust is so good, who really cares what’s on top? Just kidding. Toppings are just as important and Back Road covers all the bases there too. Speaking of covering all the bases, its gluten-free pizza is the best in town. BEST TACOS El Parasol The thing about sandwiches is there are just too many choices of bread. And while bread is a delicious and important building block for a tasty sandwich, why bother when you can just have the sandwich of the Southwest: a taco? El Parasol wins here not just for all the delicious fillings one has to choose from—all the meats plus a good veggie selection—but also for its warm, soft, fragrant homemade tortillas. 1833 Cerrillos Road, 995-8015; 298 Dinosaur Trail, 995-8226 elparasol.com

Taco Fundación It’s like the Meow Wolf of tacos. Crazy flavor combos, pretty colors and unexpected ingredients make a stop at Taco Fundacíon always an adventure. Also, the burritos are <mwah!>. 235 N Guadalupe St., 982-8286

Bumble Bee’s Baja Grill Though it is plenty lovely to eat at Bumble Bee’s, there is just something about drive-thru tacos that makes this world a better place. It’s nice to show up with tacos for everyone—meat eaters and vegans, alike. 301 Jefferson St., 820-2862 bumblebeesbajagrill.com

BEST TAPROOM Second Street Brewery Second Street is the big winner here, perhaps because of its taproom diversity. There’s the down home feel of the original, where you’ll probably see someone you know. There’s the peoplewatching potential of the Railyard location, where you may see someone you might want to know. And then there’s the Rufina taproom, where you’re likely to hear someone you know, or want to know, thanks to its strong live music game. Buy someone a beer today! 1814 Second St., 982-3030; 1607 Paseo de Peralta, 989-3278; 2920 Rufina St., 954-1068 secondstreetbrewery.com

Santa Fe Brewing Santa Fe Brewing has upped its tap room game with the opening of the spacious Beer Hall at HQ but we’re still in love with the cozy comfort of the Brakeroom and thankful for options in Eldorado. 35 Fire Place, 424-3333; 510 Galisteo St., 780-8648 santafebrewing.com

Rowley Farmhouse Ales Rowley’s taphouse isn’t a big space but that’s what makes it fun. You kind of have to get to know your neighbors (and, frequently, their dogs), which is what taprooms are supposed to be all about. 1405 Maclovia St., 428-0719 rowleyfarmhouse.com

BEST TEA The Teahouse With more than 150 varieties of tea available, The Teahouse is sure to please even the most pansophic of teadrinkers. But that variety also makes it a fun place to try new things. Staff are always happy to make recommendations based on your preferences, and we obviously aren’t the only ones who get a kick out of placing an order for a Volcano Flower Burst, Hairy Crab or King of Duck Shit. 821 Canyon Road, 992-0972 teahousesantafe.com

Opuntia Café Oh, Opuntia, we await your re-opening with such thinly veiled excitement! When you are ready in your new Railyard space, we will be ready for your tea culture teachings, good tastes, lovely designs and lots of cacti. 1607 Alcaldesa St. #201, 780-5796 opuntia.cafe

ArtfulTea Tea is a beautiful thing and so is this little spot. Not only does ArtfulTea carry over 90 types, it makes some fantastic blends that are fun to take home and surprise people with. Be sure to ask all your dumb tea questions here because they’ve got the answers. 101 W Marcy St., 795-7724 artfultea.com

BEST VEGETARIAN Sweetwater Harvest Kitchen Sweetwater Harvest Kitchen may be your best vegetarian food, but it’s not actually a vegetarian restaurant (it serves sustainably harvested seafood and meat)—it’s a healthy eating kind of place. Inspired by world cuisine and what’s fresh locally, all dishes are gluten-free, beautiful to look at and even better to taste. Whether you’re looking for a yucca root pizza, a paleo wrap—or just have a buddy who can’t go without a burger—look no further. 1512 Pacheco St., 795-7383 sweetwatersf.com

Vinaigrette When you own a farm and grow amazing veggies, it only makes sense to open a restaurant focused on fresh ingredients. As you all well know, though, Vinaigrette makes something new, specifically, of salad, with creative recipes that take it from a mere side dish to main course status. Bonus: Owner Erin Wade’s eco-friendly initiatives should inspire every restaurant operator, everywhere. 709 Don Cubero Alley, 820-9205 vinaigretteonline.com

Paper Dosa Indian food has no need for meat—all those spices turn vegetables and beans into things one never thought they could be. If you’re not sure about that, then you haven’t been to Paper Dosa. 551 W Cordova Road, 930-5521 paper-dosa.com CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

BEST BOOKSTORE BEST BIKE SHOP The Broken Spoke Santa Feans are ride or die for The Broken Spoke, conveniently located in the center of town. Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse Maybe you’re into the packed calendar of author events, the Iconik coffee and pastries, or custom ordering from this more than 40-year-old local independent. Maybe you dig the fact that Billy the Kid once spent time in the old Santa Fe jailhouse on the spot where you now like to sip a latte and stare at the fireplace in the wintertime. Or maybe you’re just there for a quick curbside pickup. Whatever it is, Collected Works is Santa Fe’s favorite boutique bookstore experience. 202 Galisteo St., 988-4226 collectedworksbookstore.com

Garcia Street Books What’s better than an indie bookstore next to an indie coffeeshop (Downtown Subscription) in a mellow neighborhood? Maybe one with a thoughtfully curated selection of brand-new titles, plus older ones that are given room to breathe on the shelf? 376 Garcia St., Ste. B, 986-0151 garciastreetbooks.com

Frontier Frames A pal collects movie posters, but not the lame, obvious ones. One time we went to Frontier Frames to pick up a giant 65-year-old Bowery Boys poster. Not only was it gorgeously mounted, but staff had expertly disguised the tears in the paper. That’s probably one of several reasons why this resource for artists, galleries and collectors has been in business since 1973 and is marking two decades as a Best of Santa Fe winner.

Santa Fe Lash & Beauty Bar Owner Lisa Murphy loves lashes. Although she’s worked in beauty for over three decades now, she first studied eyelash extensions in 2011, and she’s mastered five different techniques for building out lush, soft lashes. Murphy passes that expertise onto a team of five aestheticians and technicians who can get your face decked out with all the accoutrements you could need, but only after a thorough facial (and they do nails, too). 1012 Marquez Place #101, 988-8923 santafelashandbeautybar.com

Therapy Solutions In an age of tech and machines, sometimes the best tool a physical therapist can use to get to the heart of a patient’s pain is touch, which is a big part of Therapy Solution’s twopronged method of using manual therapy, like limb manipulation and stretching, with physical exercise. LIVING BEST BUSINESS IN THE SILER ROAD CORRIDOR

The Food Depot Northern New Mexico's food bank was already a huge player in addressing hunger among vulnerable people, but in the wake of COVID-19, its importance seems all the more front and center. Jill Dixon, The Food Depot's director of development, tells SFR the organization is still compiling official data on the change in food insecurity this year, but she knows the need has increased dramatically—as much as 30%. 1222 A Siler Road, 471-1633 thefooddepot.org

Meow Wolf The arts juggernaut's House of Eternal Return drew millions through its immersive doors, and the space that was once a bowling alley became a coveted venue for concerts. It's closed right now due to public health orders. 1352 Rufina Circle, 395-6369 meowwolf.com

Big Jo True Value Hardware Customer service that patrons can rely on has long been the guiding principle that keeps local shoppers here instead of in a big box down the road. Big Jo is also the first-place winner in Best Hardware Store. Go figure. 1311 Siler Road, 473-2255 bigjotruevalue.com

BEST BUSINESS ON THE SOUTHSIDE

Plaza Café Southside All of the winners in the Best Business on the Southside category this year are places where people gather to enjoy food and drink, but the anchor of the San Ysidro Plaza has been the top favorite time and again. Menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner from the Razatos family's Plaza Cafe Southside are thoughtful and satisfying for the whole family, and there's enough neon, chrome and shiny seats in the joint to remind you of the diner atmosphere from way back. 3466 Zafarano Drive, 424-0755 plazacafesouth.com

BEST BUSINESS ON ST. MICHAEL’S DRIVE/ TRIANGLE DISTRICT The Candyman Strings & Things If Grand Central Station were a music store in New Mexico's capital city, there's no doubt the trains would pull into and out of The Candyman. Sure, strings are in the name, but it's the thousands of other things that make it the city's busy hub of musicality—not the least of which are music classes for the large and small (yes, now remote, too). Find instruments to buy and rent, recording and amplification gear, educational materials and more. 851 St. Michael's Drive, 983-5906 candymansf.com

SFREPORTER.COM

Pennington family kept the nursery growing during the early weeks of the pandemic through curbside service and sheer determination. Its local-centric bent on perennials is likely to keep shoppers seeking them out year-round for years to come, and it's the reason the nursery comes out on top of the businesses on the Westside in this brand new Best of Santa Fe category. It's also the Best Garden/Plant Store. 1409 Agua Fria St., 983-4831 aguafrianursery.com

La Montañita Co-op Food Market Members of the co-op get a dividend every year, along with special deals throughout the seasons. But you don't have to be a member to shop here for groceries or a meal. Solano Center, 913 West Alameda St., 984-2852 lamontanita.coop

Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery It's only been open at this spot for a few years, but the neighborhood bar and restaurant became a quick hit. BEST HIKING/BIKING/ WALKING TRAIL

Santa Fe River Trail The evolution of the paved Santa Fe River Trail in the last decade has left people who live and work in the area astounded, as well as stamped an indelible impression on visitors who seek the city's out-of-car experiences. Now it stretches across the equator of the city, from the shady sidewalks and picnic benches on the east side near Patrick Smith Park, through downtown hideouts that offer respite from government buildings, past Alto Park and under Siler Road. Watch for more to come. Managed by the city and county 955-6664 santafenm.gov/trails_1

Dale Ball Trails Trailheads for this 22-mile network at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Cerro Gordo Road and Upper Canyon Road, are close to downtown. Managed by the Santa Fe Conservation Trust, 989-7019, sfc.org/dale-ball-trails

Galisteo Basin Preserve Accessed from US 84/285 south of Eldorado, the preserve is nearly 10,000 acres and 28 miles of dirt track suitable for mountain bikes, equestrians and just plain walking for anyone who wants that. Managed by Commonwheel Conservancy, 690-3094 commonwealconservancy.org/galisteobasin-preserve

BEST NONPROFIT The Food Depot Volunteers who return to the warehouse and food distribution locations testify to the organization's massive influence. It's no wonder that celebrities the likes of Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown and UFC Champion Jon "Not Bones Anymore" Jones have made big donations in the last year. Couple that with corporate support from Los Alamos National Laboratory and Triad LLC and thousands of smaller donations for the community to understand just a fraction of how The Food Depot feeds the hungry. 1222 A Siler Road, 471-1633 thefooddepot.org

Kitchen Angels This flock of angels uses a commercial kitchen and a fleet of private vehicles to help get meals cooked and delivered by volunteers to those who need them, and has been doing so since 1992. 1222 Siler Road, 471-7780 kitchenangels.org

BEST NONPROFIT FOR ANIMALS

Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society Santa Fe loves its furry friends so hard. BEST NONPROFIT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Santa Fe Conservation Trust The men and women who founded this organization in the '90s set out to preserve access to Atalaya Mountain. Today, the group has influenced the development of more than 75 miles of public trails in some of the region's outdoor jewels, including the Dale Ball Trails, Rail Trail, Sun Mountain and La Piedra Open Space. BEST PARK Santa Fe Railyard Park These 11 acres in the Railyard are a consistent favorite on our readers' list of the best parks. It's no wonder: The planning that went into the space more than a decade ago was kind of a big deal. New York landscape architect Ken Smith won a competitive process to design the park. His plans for the placement of its native plants and flowers, along with walking and bike paths and a play area match the old railroad alignment and are laid out to recall the boxcars and loading docks of days gone by. 740 Cerrillos Road, 982-3373 railyardsantafe.com

BEST CASINO Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino True story: A friend once won $400 from a penny slot machine at Buffalo Thunder, and with that little windfall, he had a steak, drank delicious cocktails, caught some live music, dipped into a little bit of blackjack, danced late at the Shadeh Nightclub and reserved a room so he wouldn't drive home after drinking—all under one roof. La Fonda on the Plaza Renovations came to La Fonda's La Fiesta Lounge, but it still maintains that small town feel we know and love. In healthier times, one would find country and honky-tonk legend Bill Hearne holding court a few times per week, and when visitors to our town ask for a list of killer margaritas, this one's always someplace near the top. You don't have to stay there for access, either. Glorious.

Lannan Foundation Lannan's mission statement clearly states it's about "cultural freedom" and, in a town like Santa Fe, that's a welcome mission, indeed. Violet Crown Cinema When the construction hole first appeared in the Railyard, our first Santa Fe-centric thought was "Pshshsht. Now what?" We're glad to have been proven too snooty, and Violet Crown has since become one of the most valuable and locally vital places in all the land. Maybe it's having mainstream and indie movies under one roof (or being able to drink beer while watching some dumb Marvel shlock), but one thing's certain: We hope VC never leaves us. 1606 Alcaldesa St., 216-5678, santafe.violetcrown.com

BEST MUSEUM Museum of International Folk Art It's rather difficult to sing the praises of the Museum of International Folk Art without leaving something important out. There's the recent offerings, such as the Yokai exhibit that celebrated hundreds of years of Japanese demon lore or the homage to all things folklorico—and then there's the year-round classes, lectures, workshops, community events and so on. It's a no-brainer voting this place number one. 706 Camino Lejo, 476-1200 internationalfolkart.org

MUSICIAN/BUSKER Liv Orovich When we first met Liv Orovich and her violin on the Santa Fe Plaza five years ago, she was relatively new to town and still trying to make her way through what were, at the time, absurd city busking policies. Since then, it's almost weirder to not see her out there shredding those strings and teaching us all a thing or two about how traditional venues mean nothing when it comes to good music. Half a Shipwreck You love 'em, they love you, it gets weird, it gets fun. In the busking hierarchy of the world, folks like this (who put a little more time and energy into the affair) rank high always. BEST THEATER GROUP Santa Fe Playhouse With Artistic Director Vaughan Irving leaving his post in the capable hands of Robyn Rikoon, things may be changing at the ol' Playhouse, but it's in one of the most creatively strong places of its long existence. BUTTERS and his siblings were trapped as homeless kittens living in La Cienega. BUTTERS is a Siamese mix, blue eyed boy. He is the first of his siblings to figure out how to do most anything. He has a loud purr, is gentle, handsome, and truly a sweet kitten. He is also an excellent big brother to BOSCO. They would make a terrific pair to adopt together if you are looking for two. MIND BODY SPIRIT ACUPUNCTURE Rob Brezsny

Week of July 29th

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti is renowned for his buoyancy. In one of his famous lines, he wrote, “I am awaiting, perpetually and forever, a renaissance of wonder.” Here’s what I have to say in response to that thought: Your assignment, as an Aries, is NOT to sit there and wait, perpetually and forever, for a renaissance of wonder. Rather, it’s your job to embody and actualize and express, perpetually and forever, a renaissance of wonder. The coming weeks will be an especially favorable time for you to rise to new heights in fulfilling this aspect of your life-long assignment.

thinking only with the head may spawn monsters and demons. Mere conceptualization is arid and sterile if not interwoven with the wisdom of the soul and the body’s earthy intuitions. Ideas that are untempered by feelings and physical awareness can produce poor maps of reality. In accordance with astrological omens, I ask you to meditate on these empowering suggestions. Make sure that as you seek to understand what’s going on, you draw on all your different kinds of intelligence.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I live in Northern California on land that once belonged to the indigenous Coast Miwok people. They were animists who believed that soul and sentience animate all animals and plants as well as rocks, rivers, mountains—everything, really. Their food came from hunting and gathering, and they lived in small bands without centralized political authority. According to one of their creation stories, Coyote and Silver Fox made the world by singing and dancing it into existence. Now I invite you to do what I just illustrated: Find out about and celebrate the history of the people and the place where you live. From an astrological perspective, it’s a favorable time to get in touch with roots and foundations.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “I always wanted to be commander-in-chief of my one-woman army,” says singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco. I think that goal is within sight for you, Scorpio. Your power over yourself has been increasing lately. Your ability to manage your own moods and create your own sweet spots and define your own fate is as robust as I have seen it in a while. What do you plan to do with your enhanced dominion? What special feats might you attempt? Are there any previously impossible accomplishments that may now be possible?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your meditation for the coming weeks comes to you courtesy of author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau. “We can never have enough of nature,” he wrote. “We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigor, vast and titanic features, the sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “When I look down, I miss the thunder cloud, and the rain which lasts three all the good stuff, and when I look up, I just trip over things,” says singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco. I wonder if weeks and produces freshets. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing she has tried an alternate approach: looking straight ahead. That’s what I advise for you in the coming weeks, freely where we never wander.” Oh, how I hope you will heed Thoreau’s counsel, Sagittarius. You would Gemini. In other words, adopt a perspective that will really benefit from an extended healing session enable you to detect regular glimpses of what’s above you and what’s below you—as well as what’s in front of amidst natural wonders. Give yourself the deep pleayou. In fact, I suggest you avoid all extremes that might sure of exploring what wildness means to you. distract you from the big picture. The truth will be most CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Author and activist available to you if you occupy the middle ground. bell hooks (who doesn’t capitalize her name) has taught classes at numerous American universities. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The Italian word nottivago She sometimes writes about her experiences there, refers to “night roamers”: people who wander around as in the following passage. “My students tell me, after dark. Why do they do it? What do they want to ‘we don’t want to love! We’re tired of being loving!’ accomplish? Maybe their ramblings have the effect of dissolving stuck thoughts that have been plaguing them. And I say to them, if you’re tired of being loving, Maybe it’s a healing relief to indulge in the luxury of hav- then you haven’t really been loving, because when ing nowhere in particular to go and nothing in particular you are loving you have more strength.” I wanted to do: to declare their independence from the obsessive you to know her thoughts, Capricorn, because I think drive to get things done. Langston Hughes (1902–1967) was a pioneering and prolific African American author and activist who LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Notice what no one else notices and you’ll know what no one else knows,” says wrote in four different genres and was influential in boosting other Black writers. She writes, “I VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else,” wrote playwright think one should forgive and remember. If you forgive Tom Stoppard. That’s ripe advice for you to meditate and forget, you’re just driving what you remember into on during the coming weeks. You’re in a phase of your the subconscious; it stays there and festers. But to look upon what you remember and know you’ve forgiven is astrological cycle when every exit can indeed be an achievement.” That’s the approach I recommend for entrance somewhere else—but only if you believe in that possibility and are alert for it. So please dissolve you right now, Pisces. Get the relief you need, yes: Forgive those who have trespassed against you.
