It’s hard to generate much enthusiasm for the New Mexico Restaurant Association’s protest of the governor’s order to shutter indoor dining. Photos of large groups of restaurant employees protesting cheek-tojowl without masks makes me wonder what their idea of “We’re Doing it Right” might be.

The way to stop COVID is to avoid the three C’s: close contact, crowds and closed spaces.

Seems like the protesters are doing everything wrong, in addition to refusing to wear masks.

The Restaurant Association would do better to lobby for positive steps to support beleaguered restaurants, like encouraging state and local government to: • fast-track approvals for outdoor dining • allow sale of alcohol on patios • subsidize turning streets, sidewalks, and parking lots into outdoor dining instead of throwing up roadblocks and onerous fees • allowing package sale and delivery of alcohol like many progressive cities and states have done • create criteria for what ‘doing it right’ means, and to set up government inspections and approvals for the restaurants that comply.

So, does this mean the school district is going to pay for childcare for those of us who have to be on-site for work and have young elementary school kids?

I pay taxes for my children to go to school. If they are not going to school— physically going to school—I want that money back to pay for their childcare…Our children are required to attend school and if we are unable to physically send them to school, a lot of families with two working parents are being put in an untenable financial situation through no fault of their own.

The state is responsible for providing a safe, monitored space for children to learn. If they’re not providing it in-person, they need to provide the assistance for it to happen.

Higher Ed Looking Ahead

elsey Hennegan spent the last two years at St. John’s College completing her graduate degree in liberal arts. When COVID-19 forced shutdowns across New Mexico in March, she held onto hope that the pandemic would subside in time for graduation and oral exams.

It didn’t.

So Hennegan, along with the rest of her cohort, sat in front of their computer screens for a Zoom graduation that was part livestream, part pre-recorded program. She popped a bottle of sparkling wine by herself and tried to let go of the parts of graduation that students look forward to: parties with friends, dinner with

family and proud photos in a cap and gown.

She didn’t even receive her cap, gown and diploma until after the online ceremony.

She says it was “anticlimactic.”

Thousands of other students, faculty and administrators across Santa Fe faced similar letdowns amid campus shutdowns, online classroom difficulties, declining enrollment and reduced income as ripple effects from COVID-19 hit the city’s three undergraduate colleges.

Students and parents nationwide wonder whether a fully or mostly online education is worth as much as an in-person one. And as the US economy has taken a massive hit, leaving colleges and their students in varying degrees of financial crises, some institutions in Santa Fe have decided to raise tuition or keep it the same to stay afloat, while others went the opposite way.

“I’m able to see the restrictions and limitations that the administration is dealing with, and so while I wish I could have had spring on campus, I also see that they made the right decisions,” Hennegan tells SFR. She missed talking and working with her peers and professors face to face, con-

sidering them “the hardest thing to replace” after moving completely online for the last half of the spring semester.

The Institute of American Indian Arts decreased tuition, while Santa Fe Community College increased it. St. John’s College’s tuition won’t change at all. All three are helping students with internet connectivity and have contingency plans in place if there is another major outbreak.

IAIA decided to lower tuition significantly for the 2020-2021 academic year to help its financially-strapped students finish their degrees and cope with mostly online classes. President Robert Martin tells SFR 68% of the school’s courses will be exclusively online in the upcoming semester.

“Not only are we offering a 10% reduction for tuition, and that’s primarily for students while they’re taking classes on campus,” he says, “but if they’re exclusively online students, then it’s a 25% reduction.”

In contrast, SFCC raised its tuition in order to offset declines in enrollment, despite plans to be almost completely online in the fall—from classes to financial aid help. Only the trade courses, such as welding and nursing, will have some in-person instruction.

“We’ve basically converted all of our student service systems and all of our student support systems to really effective online platforms. When we first closed down in March, it was a huge scramble,” says SFCC President Becky Rowley. “We were not prepared. We did not have online advising. We didn’t have very much online tutoring.”

Now, almost all students are enrolling online at SFCC. The bookstore has also gone completely virtual. Rowley tells SFR the college is now much better prepared for a spike in coronavirus cases and a possible campus shutdown in the fall.

But schools that are better prepared digitally for a shutdown still can’t change the lack of face-to-face instruction and a weakened economy. IAIA saw a decline in enrollment from 245 last fall to 219 this fall, though the number of graduate stu-

dents increased slightly.

At SFCC during the fall semester of 2019, student credit hours totaled 32,628.

A budget projection for fall 2020 predicts 22,835 credit hours. While student credit hours are in decline, SFCC saw an uptick in credit hours per individual, meaning credit students were taking more classes.

St. John’s College is the only institution claiming that admissions are up “year over year.” Last year 89 freshmen started at the Santa Fe campus in the fall.

This year, over 100 freshmen will start in just a few months, the highest number of students planning to enroll at this stage in the year since 2010, according to Caroline Randall, director of admissions.

“Whether that will hold because of [COVID-19], that’s the question,” says Ned Walpin, associate dean for graduate programs. “Our fall admissions for our freshman class here in Santa Fe is actually up.”

Contingency plans are another aspect of preparing for a partial in-person fall semester. Because of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s public health orders, St. John’s and IAIA had to decrease the number of people who could live on campus, meaning lots of students around Santa Fe will either need housing or will have to study online from home.

The schools’ plans include requiring masks, smaller class sizes, reducing occupancy in residence halls on campus and social distancing in common areas. SFCC and IAIA have helped students pay for internet plans and loaned out laptops—necessities in a state like New Mexico with such large gaps in internet connectivity.

The schools will rely on public health orders to decide whether to keep campuses open.

“We definitely have to have contingency plans and of course, we’re working on those,” Martin says. “Because we realize that with COVID-19 there’s a lot of uncertainty at this point, but things could change.”

Put to the Test 4 COVID-19 testing in New Mexico continues to increase, but knowing when and where to go is still a challenge for some Santa Feans “I feel for the people that maybe are falling through the cracks,” he tells SFR. Still, Kaplan’s experience isn’t universal. Donald Apodaca started the summer traveling from state to state. The nomadic veteran arrived in Santa Fe on July 13 hoping to settle here for a bit and volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Shelter, as he had during a previous stint in Santa Fe. Shelter staff directed him to the public health office for testing and, Apodaca says, he called, received an appointment two days later and was in and out in 15 minutes.

Health officials acknowledge the bumpy testing landscape, as well as the possibility that its terrain might be leaving symptomatic and high-risk individuals untested. At a July 17 news conference, Human Services Secretary David Scrase said the state is working with private providers to create a less chaotic system, perhaps by dividing the duties of testing symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals between private and state sites.

“We are looking at that process to figure out how to prioritize and better ensure that people with symptoms get a test,” Scrase said.

By 6 am, a security guard starts turning people away from the COVID-19 drive through test site, even though testing doesn’t begin for another two hours.

New Mexico has more than 100 testing sites run by different entities—the health department, hospitals, emergency rooms, pharmacies and others—and ranks fourth in the US for the average number of tests performed per capita, according to the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. New Mexico reports running 7,256 tests a day on a seven-day rolling average, surpassing its reopening gating criteria of 5,000 tests per day. As of July 20, New Mexico had run a total of 469,215 tests and tested approximately 20% of the state’s population.

The robust and diverse testing landscape comes with challenges and, SFR finds, uneven experiences ranging from frustrating to hassle-free.

Various factors set that limit, including staff availability and testing supplies, as well as the labs’ capacity to process the tests.

Santa Fe’s other testing sites allow for advanced appointment booking, which eliminates some frustrations, but can create other barriers.

CVS Pharmacy allows for online scheduling at its Cerrillos Road site, but also requires prospective patients to screen for eligibility with an emphasis on symptoms and pre-existing conditions, and show insurance at its drive-through site.

Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center’s test site, located at a former school building off Zia Road, requires a doctor’s referral to register ahead of time, which can pose challenges for someone without a primary care doctor or those who are asymptomatic.

Shannon Barton, director of operations at the site—which also can administer up to 120 tests each day—says patients rarely have to wait more than a day for appointments. But wait times for results can vary considerably.

The hospital recently acquired a machine that can process large numbers of tests within a day or two in-house; however, Barton says limited supplies of the chemical reagent used to process the tests requires the hospital to send some tests to other labs, such as Tricore Reference Laboratory and the Mayo Clinic, which can take up to 10 days to return results because of increased demand.

“Since July Fourth weekend, we’ve definitely seen an increase in patients,” she says.

The public state health department’s Santa Fe office also offers appointments for testing, available to asymptomatic people without a doctor’s note. But they only book 24 appointments daily, with walk-in availability dependent on staffing levels.

Health department spokesman David Morgan tells SFR the office’s main focus is conducting “rapid response” in workplaces and homes where someone has tested positive.

“While we aren’t always able to have a lot of appointments available, there are some good reasons for that in the form of the rapid testing and making sure we are working with other state agencies to stop outbreaks from known cases,” Morgan says.

I

n a crinkly government report from the 1920s, two photographs show what the Rio Grande looked like south of Socorro near the town of San Marcial, the remnants and memories of which are submerged today under the sludge and sand of Elephant Butte Reservoir’s northern extent.

Taken from a bluff above the Rio Grande, the photos show a wide, meandering river that has overflowed its channel and engulfed the lands beyond the bosque. The glossy black-and-white photographs are stuck to the report’s pages, and the typeset words read: High Water June 1, 1922. Discharge Old Channel 1,800 S.F., New Channel 7,100 S.F. The “S.F.” refers to what we today call cubic feet per second and it’s a way to measure how much water is flowing past a certain point.

According to that report: “From time immemorial the Middle Rio Grande Valley has been subject to periodical floods that have at one time or another repeatedly submerged all of the area between its bluffs.”

We’ve changed all that.

Ninety-eight years later, I’m looking at a stretch of that same river—which in Spanish reports from the 1500s is called Nuestra Señora—and watching fish die in the tiny puddles still standing along the river bank as the channel has dried and cracked into an empty, sandy wash.

What someone almost 20 years ago told me they called the “Rio Grande highway.”

Almost every year since 2002, when the Rio Grande has dried, I’ve reported on it.

I’ve ticked through all the facts: how many miles are dry, why and how the climate is warming, what biologists are doing to protect rare fish as the waters heat up and evaporate or sink into the sands, and through time, what agencies and irrigators have done to deny, ignore, or nowadays, try to alleviate the drying.

Today, I’m not telling you anything new.

I’m just telling you again.

Our river has dried.

As I type this in mid-July, about 50 miles of the Middle Rio Grande are dry within two stretches south of Albuquerque. Upstream, the Buckman Direct Diversion in Santa Fe turned off its municipal tap from the river due to low flows.

At the end of June, the water utility in Albuquerque had to stop drawing water from the Rio Grande and switch to groundwater pumping. And New Mexico, Colorado and Texas agreed in July to let the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District use water meant for other downstream users to “avoid catastrophic crop losses.” But that water will need to be replaced somehow, which means next year’s conditions will be even more dire.

It rained last night, and even though that cool water felt miraculous on my skin, it wasn’t nearly enough to revive a river and kickstart an ecosystem.

So, again. I’m not telling you anything new.

I’m just telling you again: Our river has dried.

On the first day of June 2020, I peered down into the undulating sands of the Rio Grande from the edge of the Highway 380 bridge in San Antonio, New Mexico.

Before heading back to my truck and driving to a different spot where I could traverse the bosque and hike up the riverbed, I heard a wet glug.

The noise came from a spot where 13 months earlier I’d seen the biggest beaver I’ve ever seen. Following the line of small silvery fish shining flat in the sand,

it took a few seconds for my eyes to focus on the interweave of light and shadow at the edge of the channel. There, a golden-scaled carp was trying to flip over in the mud; its refuge puddle had evaporated in the morning’s 90-degree heat. I snapped a few pictures and left the bridge.

This is normal.

Normal for New Mexico’s largest river to dry—not every summer, but more summers than not since the mid- to late-1990s.

According to records from across the state, New Mexico’s average annual temperature has increased by about 3 degrees Fahrenheit in the past 50 years. In a recent issue of New Mexico Earth Matters, the University of New Mexico’s David Gutzler lays out the gritty details. Again.

(He’s been at this a long time: Studying climate change, writing academic papers, talking to reporters, and teaching generations of students.)

In April, I talked to him about snowpack. At the time, Rio Grande was running about 20% of its historic average through Albuquerque. Those were rotten conditions, even though snowpack in the watershed was close to average last fall and into February, when conditions start-

ed to warm and dry.

Globally, April was the warmest April on record. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts that 2020 will be one of the five warmest years on record—and there’s a 75% chance it will be the warmest year since scientists began tracking global temperatures in the late 1880s.

“This year was more along the lines of what I anticipate for the future, to happen more often,” Gutzler told me then.

Warm conditions in the already-warm, already-arid Southwest affect forests, orchards, wildlife, rivers—everything.

When it’s warmer, plants need more water. People use more water. And rivers lose more water, even when we’re not in a drought and less snow or rain is falling.

Hydrologist Shaleene Chavarria has been paying attention to declining snowmelt and streamflows in the Rio Grande for a while—and I keep coming back to her research. In a peer-reviewed study she co-authored with Gutzler, she found that between 1958 and 2015, the river’s flows have declined, particularly in March, April and May. Though she called what happened this year “scary,” she wasn’t surprised.

ly April. Typically, over the past two decades, it has dried at the start of irrigation season, when its waters are diverted into ditches and canals. Two years ago, though, that early spring drying happened right when the river should have been ripping with spring snowmelt.

Then, the winter of 2018/2019 boomed. Spring waters roared down the Rio Grande, filling up side channels excavated to slow waters for rare fish and restoration projects— built to mimic the river we destroyed when we hoisted up dams and filled up reservoirs for farms and cities, straightened and channelized stretches of the river to no longer braid and meander.

The spring of 2019 was marvelous to behold, especially after the previous spring, summer and fall, when the state’s largest reservoir, Elephant Butte, dropped to 3% capacity.

That’s when a friend and I saw that fat, happy beaver grab some willow leaves, flip over, and float off downstream under the San Antonio bridge.

This June, staring down at the dead and dying fish, I wondered where that beaver was. I wondered how and where it found water, what happened to its spring kits.

Initially, when it dries, the Rio Grande can feel like a raucous, busy place.

The dying fish thrash and glug and splash. Birds seem manic with song.

Coyote and raccoon prints pace up to each shrinking puddle. There are so many easy meals to snatch that they leave fish with just a few bites out of them in the middle of the bed.

Things quiet down pretty quickly, though.

This year, when I returned to the dry riverbed three days later, it was quiet save for flies. The only birds I see are turkey vultures who soar and descend. The fish I watched struggle

in the last of the hot puddles—those that haven’t been eaten—are now heaving masses of bone and maggot.

In 2002, I met some fisheries biologists.

We used to drink a lot of beer and whiskey and talk about books. And I’d listen—incredulous—when they talked about their work on the Rio Grande. The river was drying up? I couldn’t believe that could happen. The Rio Grande? Plus, I’d never seen anything about it in the news.

If the state’s largest river were drying, surely that would be newsworthy.

Later that year I started working for High Country News, and could write about it myself, instead of waiting for someone else to notice.

At that time, there were minimum flow requirements during irrigation season—a trickle of water was supposed to be left in the river for the survival of the silvery minnow, a rare fish listed in 1994 for protection under the Endangered Species Act. But the minimum flow requirements appeared to be an irritation for anyone beyond the biologists who had called for their implementation the previous year. And at the time, as the river’s flows dipped below those minimums, officials at the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Reclamation—this was during the administra administration of George W. Bush— told me a gauge was out of whack, that the streamflow numbers I was watching on the US Geological Survey’s streamflow website were wrong.

Then 7 miles of the river dried. Agencies leased some water and tried to send it downstream. Biologists seined pools and plucked out rare fish.

Five years ago, I caught back up with Christopher Hoagstrom, one of the Fish and Wildlife Service biologists who worked on minnow issues back then. Now a professor, Hoagstrom described how “weird” it was to see the river dry in 1996, when about 90 miles dried.

spring flows, fat beavers, and spawning minnows. That year, the Middle Rio Grande dried in September.

Now, it dries so regularly it’s not newsworthy anymore.

It’s normal. Just like those floods were normal more than a century ago.

Riffling through a 1947 report about plans for development in the Middle Rio Grande, I read about floods of “great magnitude” between 1870 and 1890, “though no official records exist.” Newspaper reports, however, chronicled that the “damaging flows” continued for 90 days and “several competent engineering groups” estimated flows from 45,000 cubic feet per second to 125,000 cubic feet per second.

In 1920, floods lasted 64 days and peaked at 28,800 cfs. In 1941, flood conditions stretched across 61 days and hit 24,000 cfs. The flows in 1922—that I saw in the photographs—don’t even merit a mention.

So far this year, the Rio Grande at the 380 bridge has spiked above 1,000 cfs just once, briefly in April. Even 2019’s beaver-delighting flows weren’t much to brag about in comparison, though they jumped toward 4,000 cfs twice in May and June.

That 1947 report is all about the need for development—to control floods, dampen down a rising water table, control sedimentation and aggregation of the riverbed. To meet demands, revamp old irrigation infrastructure and to save the valley.

“Unless measures are taken to rehabilitate the project and protect the lands and present development against flooding, the existing [Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District,] which includes the metropolitan development of Albuquerque, the irrigated economy of the area, and the

non-agricultural economy dependent on it will virtually disappear in an estimated 50 years,” according to that 1947 report.

The urgency of the language strikes me. People were not messing around back then.

Now, the river dries and dries. And we hope next year’s snowpack will be better.

On June 1, when I hopped down into the sandy riverbed and hiked cautiously toward the deeper cuts in the channel to look for water and fish, I kept thinking about a book I was reading about the transformation of the Bering Strait over the past century.

“The death of one living thing becomes life in another,” writes ecological historian Bathsheba Demuth. “An ecosystem is the aggregate of many species’ habits of transformation, their ways of moving energy from its origin in the sun across space and condensing it over time. To be alive is to take a place in a chain of conversions.”

The drying of the Rio Grande—despite how accustomed most of us have become to ignoring it or dismissing it—represents a vast transformation. And we are caught within that chain of conversions. It’s a transformation that we’re responsible for, on many different levels.

We colonized this river. We stole its floods. Pinned them back behind diversions and dams. Built reservoirs to retain water and attract Anglo farmers and settlements. Sucked away the river’s waters from its channel to foist it upon dry soils where creosote and mesquite scented the desert, replacing them with chile, onion, alfalfa, pecans.

And if you think I’m using the word “colonize” too freely, recall that as recently as the 1970s, the sacred lands and

farm fields of the Pueblo of Cochiti were nabbed, then sacrificed to a reservoir to protect Albuquerque from floods.

Congress authorized Cochiti Dam in 1960, and despite outcries from many tribal members, the US Army Corps of Engineers built Cochiti Reservoir between 1965 and 1975. The pueblo “lost” about 30,000 acres. What that really means is they lost farmlands, hunting areas, sacred places, ancestral grounds, connections to their past—and lost their own stretch of the Rio Grande.

We also coughed and spat up so many greenhouse gases that the climate changed, the globe heated. Australia ignites, the Amazon ignites. Temperatures in Siberia soar to 100 degrees. In many places, including within our own state, the future will be uninhabitable—in some instances because of rising seas, in others because they’ll simply be too hot, too dry for humans to survive.

Early in my reporting career, I thought there were good guys and bad guys.

I thought that if I researched hard enough, asked enough questions, talked to enough people, I’d find one agency, one person, one action to blame. (That inclination toward villain-seeking might have something to do with being lied to while reporting on my very first story about the dry riverbed.)

Now, I know it’s the system in its entirety. The system we built to transform the desert, encourage and sustain white settlements, and provide certainty to our cities and ways of life.

I want to point to bad guys, here and now. But the truth is, the people working on these issues are the ones who care the most, who worry about rain and snow, and

who’ve likely ceded a great deal of personal happiness to meetings, reports, arguments, litigation and agreements.

Over nearly two decades, I’ve seen how agencies and people have changed, and how hard people work to cooperate. How federal, state, local, and tribal agencies, as well as some conservationists, work together to try to meet everyone’s needs, to jiggle water in the system to try and keep some in the river.

But we can’t keep pretending that everyone’s needs can be met. We can’t keep hoping for a robust winter and hearty snowpack; we can’t keep hoping next year, the reservoirs will fill.

Remember that 2019 was a lustrous year for snow. But still the river dried.

And reservoir levels on the Rio Grande remained far below capacity. Elephant Butte, for example, hit a high of about 29 percent capacity last July.

The other day, I received an email update from the Bureau of Reclamation about projected reservoir levels for Elephant Butte and Caballo—two critical reservoirs that supply southern New Mexico and Texas, and are a pinch point for litigation between the two states over distribution of the waters of the Rio Grande.

Right now, Elephant Butte Lake is 11.7% full, holding back about 230,000 acre feet of water. By this time next month, it will plummet to 124,000 acre feet.

“Unfortunately, our worst-case scenario is playing out with very little sustained monsoon activity, and increased temperatures driving demand,” read the email.

By the end of irrigation season, the reservoir will likely be down to where it dipped in 2018—about 3%.

Last spring, upstairs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, six singers spaced themselves out across the floor, each standing in for a spot on the Rio Grande: the headwaters, Albuquerque, Elephant Butte Reservoir, El Paso, Big Bend and the mouth of the river at the Gulf of Mexico. On a screen, the year flashed for the audience, as the singers interpreted the streamflow data in song.

The six began their individual songs in 1974. They roared through the wet pe-

riod of 1984 through 1993, a time during which many people moved to New Mexico and the state’s population begin inching upwards.

Familiar enough with the data from years of reporting on it, I waited for the ebbs and flows. Likely, I gripped my seat in anticipation of 2018. I didn’t want to hear the river screech to such a halt as it did, didn’t even want to hear Elephant Butte descend to sandy depths and stir the ghosts of its inundated lands.

Once the singers finished embodying the recent data—one of the three composers, Marisa Demarco, explained to me later— they each improvised a possible future for their point.

Listening to them then, I heard the chaos of the near-future. We know temperatures are rising. Scientists like Chavarria keep telling us, repeating again and again, that river flows are decreasing even in wet years thanks to the warming. Scientists like Gutzler keep telling us the warming trend keeps heading upwards, and water pressures will become tighter and tighter.

I listened to the singers’ voices tell the story of rising temperatures, quieted flows, uncertainty and fear. I imagined the chaos as we failed to heed the warnings, failed to make changes and plans, and kept clinging to outdated systems—systems that obliterated ecosystems and species and that had harmed some people to benefit others.

Then, notes emerged in the chaos of their voices that laid bare a different future. A future that left me in tears, but not because our river was gone.

This isn’t a eulogy.

Believe it or not, it’s a love letter.

Every news story I’ve reported on the Rio Grande—for this paper, for radio, for television, for magazines and online outlets—has been a love story. I’ve laid out the facts, asked you to see our river. And I’ve secretly implored each and every one of you to love our river.

Love can coast with the medians and averages. The regulated flows. But there’s banality in trudging through days unrecognizable from one another; there’s a certain dullness to water that’s moved from one reservoir to the next, depending on who needs it, what lawsuit is pending, what capacity there is for volume, and what tolerance we have as a society for dry riverbeds, extinct fish species and dead cottonwood forests.

In bouncy spring flows, however, there is wild, mad love.

And, I’ve learned, there’s love in the bitter quiet of a sandy river channel.

We’ve trapped this river, by our needs and within our laws. We’ve trapped this river by clinging to a colonial past, by failing to heed warnings, by lacking the imagination to change.

But Nuestra Señora, I know she still has tricks up her sleeve. I’ve listened to her voice. And she will outlast us all.

In a nutshell, Kirkman offers classes taught by herself and a number of volunteers year-round and allows customers to vote on their favorite nonprofit organizations. “I already have a job that pays for all my expenses,” Kirkman said at the time, simply, about why all proceeds go out the door. “It’ll be a 30-minute class and we’ll be giving our donation to Casa First—$2,000,” Kirkman tells SFR. “The other part is going to be trying to inspire people to add to the donations, so there will be a link where they can donate to CASA First directly.”

The organization advocates for foster children in the community, and its Executive Director Annie Rasquin will be on hand for the Facebook Live event, learning to slang some clay of her own.

In addition to the check provided by Kirkman, Paseo Pottery also plans to donate 20% of its online gallery sales all day Friday.

“It’ll be a bit of a demo since people probably don’t have a [pottery] wheel at home,” Kirkman adds, though points out that if one does have a wheel at home, they’re certainly free to join in. Similar events for Tewa Women United and New Energy Economy are planned for next month, and Kirkman says Paseo Pottery always accepts donations for their selected charities.

“People have been really generous in what they donate,” she says. “People’s life situations have changed, but we’re hoping to build back up.” (Alex De Vore)

Monuments A Black writer gives his perspective on monuments and memory

lack Lives Matter had been heating up all across America, debates over racism, history and memorialization were raging and by June 17, the day was characterized by two events that have shaped my frame of reference ever since.

On that day, the mayor of Charleston, South Carolina, announced the statue memorializing former Vice President John C Calhoun—proponent of “states’ rights” and known as the intellectual architect of slavery—was coming down.

I was knowledgeable about Calhoun since Charleston was once my hometown and where I lived before relocating to Santa Fe 10 years ago. Charleston’s mayor was responding to fear of losing political clout, fear of social disunity or fear of protests. The background politics seemed less important than the fact a monument looming on a 100-foot pedestal—whose indignity had been contested

by Blacks in Charleston since its erection in 1896—was leaving the social (and literal) pedestal. Calhoun wouldn’t be gazing down on Black Charlestonians for another generation.

I couldn’t say which announcement preceded the other time-wise, but I heard my hometown news first, before learning of Mayor Alan Webber’s June 17 declaration that several monuments in Santa Fe, my second home, were also scheduled for removal. They included the obelisk in the Plaza and monuments to Kit Carson and Diego De Vargas, historical figures with highly questionable legacies. Politely stating so is in no historical sense revisionism since legacies of bloody conquerors, victors and racist systems have always been questioned by the people they trampled.

So on June 17 I contemplated colonialism and racism and relieved many old emotions.

Historical parallels struck me starkly; the Calhoun statue in South Carolina and the Plaza obelisk both occupy central downtown spaces, signifying the heartbeat and pulse of a city. Charleston legend says the Calhoun statue initially stood on a human-scale mount.

Vandalism beginning in the early 1900s pushed the pedestal higher in a futile attempt to escape protest, curses and rocks thrown by Blacks who believed Calhoun sneered at them from his perch.

The Santa Fe obelisk downtown features four inscriptions, including “To the heroes who have fallen in various battles with savage Indians…” with the word “savages” chiseled away. I believe the defacement was originally an act of vandalism. But morally, honestly—wasn’t it a necessary intervention?

Who wants to justify “savages”?

Who wants to justify raising a slavery proponent on a pedestal so high his presence becomes unavoidable, from birth to death, like a psychological inevitability?

Ask Blacks in South Carolina. Ask Native Americans in New Mexico.

On June 17, I spent several hours reading Facebook posts by friends in Charleston and in Santa Fe. The common refrain, roughly paraphrased, read, “I have spent years living with this burden, feeling hurt or ashamed of myself for wanting to cry. But right now I feel so proud.”

There was a commonality between marginalized voices when they have their say. They have moved from the margins of democratic participation to the heart

of a protest movement. The marginalized sometimes feel a particular kind of frustration speaking up at all given they had no say when these memorials were erected in the first place. The marginalized should have the deciding voices during the forthcoming battles over who we commemorate in America: If their blood has been spilled millionfold, their voices matter the most.

I admit there was a time when I was more accepting of arguments like “Monuments? Will tearing them down change the world? Or feed the hungry?”

There was a time in my own life when I found it nearly impossible to imagine the South without its Confederate emblems. The symbols have a way of becoming bound up with one’s sense of a past, or identity, even when one intellectually disapproves. You worry on a gut level that your past will disappear without them. I see now that the attitude is parochialism, or, worse, a failure of the imagination.

The direct answer is yes, a vast reconsideration of history and morality can change the world by reflecting higher standards of ethics, morality and social

justice. And it is historically educational, as people study the periods reassessed.

Historical erasure is a straw man given that memorials removed can be replaced by other memorials honoring figures who are themselves historical.

More specifically, I don’t support preserving memorials to conquistadores, Confederates, nor hypocrite slaveholders like Washington and Jefferson. You may disagree, but perhaps (if you’re a progressive) you may still agree with this: A world with fewer memorials to military leaders and checkered politicians replaced by monuments to civic leaders, visionaries, labor rights leaders and freedom fighters who exist in all cultures—or simply honoring places instead of individuals—will also be a world friendlier to labor rights, civil rights, economic justice and environmental justice.

The time for protest (which is necessary), contention (which is inevitable), listening (which is healthy) and, above all else, debate, is now.

s the coronavirus pandemic continues, and with it renewed restrictions on dining out, I’ve been conducting what I internally think of as Pandemic Portraits—an informal series of pieces about foodservice workers during lockdowns.

Thus far, this has included server Jen Stillions, Back Road Pizza owner and operator Piper Kapin and Il Piatto’s owner and chef Matt Yohalem, each providing insight into how they’ve been coping with lost business, mask-fighting patrons and what they perceive to be the future of the foodservice industry (assuming it has a recognizable one).

Until this week, however, we’ve yet to hear from bartenders.

Ask anyone who’s worked in the biz and they’ll tell you that tending bar is one of the most high-stress positions. In many cases, bartenders are responsible for an entire restaurant’s drinks. The pace is fast and unrelentingly fraught with potential peril: Unruly customers abound, cutting people off is no fun and someplace within it all they need to handle coworkers, special orders and, in New Mexico, some of the strictest booze laws and penalties in the country. With a pandemic raging? It’s even harder. In fact, between the time we set the interview and then wound up speaking, Radish & Rye (505 Cerrillos Road, 930-5325) bartender Laurel Hunziker found herself out of work yet again.

It’s tough, she says, both from an income point of view and because a large chunk of any Santa Fe restaurant’s patronage is tourism and out-of-staters.

“A lot of restauraneurs who I’ve spoken to and worked for have said the same thing, ‘We want our employees to be safe and healthy,’” Hunziker tells SFR. “Within our industry, we’re all trying to look out for each other, but the concern is how many guests are going to get it?”

“On top of that,” she continues, “there are all the people I know who are in a more vulnerable position—who are undocumented or for whatever reason can’t get into the unemployment system, or…these are people choosing between bad and worse, and shaming people because they have to take what they can get seems really heartless; how are we expecting people who are barely scraping by to not [work] when there’s really no safety net?”

This speaks to a wider online trend wherein workers wind up hassled because they want or have to go back. For her part, Hunziker says she could have stayed on unemployment, but ultimately wound up feeling strange about it when she was willing to work. Further, at Radish & Rye, she says the owners will give any non-compliant patrons the boot for shirking masks or playing fast and loose with regs.

Additionally, she notes, many foodservice workers she knows are feeling antsy, herself included, and it’s not just about money.

“A lot of us enjoy the work, and we enjoy being a part of the social community and pulling back out of that is a little dif-

say, were let go at the onset of the pandemic, so they’re grateful to still have the job after a two-month furlough period.

Still, given the location and nature of the eatery, many of Walker’s patrons wind up being tourists, and though we can all probably agree on their importance to our local economy at almost any other time, that’s a scary prospect right now.

“They’re pretty much our main people who come in, and a lot are from Texas and California, which would have been great last year, but given the circumstances…”

Walker says. “But we have signage about wearing masks, we’ve been trained to tell people to please wear a mask and I haven’t had people who’ve gotten outraged about that.”

Hunziker, Prokopiak and Walker agree that one of the best things that could happen to bars right now would be changes to liquor laws, even temporarily. As it stands, restaurants require a special permit to sell packaged alcohol, and the vast majority of bars in town can’t send customers off with to-go booze.

Such a change has been a popular refrain amongst foodservice workers of late.

“I think it would make a good imCO pact,” Walker says. “It would give my bartenders and employees less exposure to people. And even though I feel like it’s much safer than a few months ago when we had to close up, I would say I’m still a little nervous.”

So, is there an answer that’ll work for everyone? Probably not.

“My big thing is I want people to be more considerate. Just be decent,” Walker says. “It just feels like when a lot of these people come in, not only are they stressed about life, they’re bringing it into the restaurant. I’m dealing with this, too! I would want more people to understand we’re scared, but we’re doing our best to keep a happy face on for you.”

It’s a super-fucked dichotomy. But The Matador is definitely re-opening. I don’t want anyone to think that we are closing.”

Meanwhile, at the Thunderbird Bar & Grill (50 Lincoln Ave., 490-6550) on the Plaza, bartender Jules Walker continues to work full-time thanks to the restaurant’s outdoor space. Others, they

Rosamund Pike tries hard in paint-by-numbers biopic

“We have come to tell you that you have fundamentally misunderstood the atom,” says Rosamund Pike as scientist Marie Curie to a roomful of stuffed shirt types. This represents the highest point of Radioactive, the new Amazon-produced biopic on the life of Curie based on the Lauren Redniss book of the same name. No amount of funny little nods to science stuff we got wrong along the way can save it from becoming another entry in a long list of perfectly fine biopics—though we doubt Pike’s going to Zellweger her way to an Oscar, as was the case with last year’s Judy.

Instead, think of the film like a series of boxes to check. Women underestimated?

Check. Science that has since been debunked?

Check. The slow realization that the polonium and radium (and by extension, radioactivity) discovered by Curie and her less-cool husband Pierre was killing them both? Check. Don’t forget the haunted past, the bald-faced misogyny and kicky moments wherein someone says, “They want to make radioactive toothpaste!” and we all laugh and laugh, knowing it would surely mean our own deaths—but they didn’t!

With visions of 1993’s Groundhog Day or the more recent (and astoundingly good) Netflix series Russian Doll still dancing in our heads, Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island crew somehow manage to churn out an original take on the concept of samsara-lite, the Buddhist doctrine of endless cycles, with Palm Springs.

Samberg is Nyles, a shiftless type whose boyfriend duties brought him to a wedding in Palm Springs a very long time ago, and where he’s been stuck in a time loop for some unknowable number of years. It’s quite possibly millennia—it’s hard to know when one’s trapped in a single day forever—and anytime he falls asleep or even dies, Nyles resets on the morning of the wedding. Forever.

There, with the ever-present reminder that nothing he does will matter come sunrise, Nyles has embraced a sort of nihilism with the passing of countless days. It’s almost like we’ve hit him at the acceptance stage of the grief cycle when the maid of honor (Cristin Milioti) ends up in the loop with him and he finds something actually worth living for. Elsewhere, another guest (the always delightful JK Simmons), whom Nyles

Pike carries most of the weight as the titular Curie. She’s resolute and conveys much with her eyes alone. Still, in more emotive scenes (read, scenes wherein we’re told it’s time to feel emotions) director Marjane Satrapi (of the fantastic Persepolis) doesn’t do Pike many favors.

One pictures on-set direction amounted to “Try this next line with intense emotion bubbling up from someplace,” again and again and again; Sam Riley as Pierre Curie feels blank and tiresome beside her.

Oh, it’s not that the Curies didn’t change the course of human history, and it’s not that Radioactive is particularly boring (like Judy was), it’s more like a struggle to enjoy the sameness it shares with any other biopic out there. You

haplessly brought into the loop ages ago, seeks revenge as violently and often as possible.

Fun is had, lessons are learned and Samberg and Milioti get cute together, first embracing a hedonistic sense of experimentation before descending into the stark realization that if nothing can possibly change, what’s the point of anything? Tomes have been written on the subject, and many a thinker has considered the weight of such a conundrum. But whereas Bill Murray escaped Punxsutawney through the power of love and Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne did… something in the end, it’s hard to say, Samberg’s Nyles ultimately finds bravery through something less romantic, but a lot more grounded.

No spoilers here, and it’s definitely odd to identify a plot point as grounded in a film about a time loop, but the fun of Palm Springs is in its balancing act between comedy and small scale tragedy.

NBC’s The Good Place recently came to a satisfying conclusion about knowing ourselves and when to let go (don’t get me started on its brilliant and digestible take on social contracts throughout its four seasons), and in its similar crack at explaining the unending showed us both the bittersweet realities of that which is temporary while re-contextualizing and reinforcing a truth that is also front and center in Palm Springs: We need each other. could set your watch to the story beats, in fact.

Obviously, yes, this is based on recorded things that did happen. But how the story is told feels all too familiar and no amount of pretty cinematography—which it certainly has thanks to Anthony Dod Mantle (he won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009)—seems to help.

Worth a watch? It’s the very definition of “fine.” Just don’t go expecting any revelations.

Instead, be grateful for ths history lesson.

INMATE #1: THE RISE OF DANNY TREJO

- SLOW PACE, TOO LITTLE ON FILMOGRAPHY

How many times did Danny Trejo play “the mean Chicano dude with tattoos” on TV and movies? Every time. He’s fine with it.

That is, after all, part of his life story. With more than 380 credits under his belt, Trejo labored in relative obscurity by Hollywood standards for decades before he seemed to suddenly become a hot commodity and a household name through the likes of Spy Kids, Breaking Bad and Machete (oh, and Sling commercials).

The fodder for “Inmate #1” comes from the youth that shaped him—including years in California’s infamous gladiator school prisons like San Quentin and Soledad where he picked up his famous chest tattoo—as well as the story of his rise to stardom.

The man who first used heroin at the age of 12 later held the title of boxing champion for three years running at San Quentin starting in 1966. He got sober after prison and become a drug counselor, a job that he says led him to a movie set years later when a friend there was having a moment

of temptation. For the first five years, Trejo’s credits were for nameless characters with titles like “Inmate #1,” “Ese #2” and “Angry Man,” but he began to land bigger roles after From Dusk Till Dawn (and went on to have a role in both sequels and the TV series).

The pace of this story hardly matches the action he’s seen on and off screen, but the photos of Chicano culture in Pacoima in the 1950s alone are a great reason for director Brett Harvey to spend so much time on the early part of Trejo’s life. Notably absent, however, is any mention of the mother(s) of Trejo’s three children. They do appear in the documentary, mostly retelling stories their father told them rather than divulging details or descriptions only they could have offered. Still, it’s fun to hear director Robert Rodriguez explain how Machete went from a fake “Mexploitation” trailer in another movie to its own full length feature with Trejo as number one on the call sheet.

Though a dour expression on a creased face is his signature look, the candid footage of Trejo’s repeated laughter captivates as he seems to enjoy the telling.

And makes us enjoy it too.

PRINCESS and her daughter SUNFLOWER, were surrendered to Felines & Friends from a family member of a terminally ill relative that Princess Sunflower sadly, could no longer care for them. These beautiful girls are a little shy at first, but the family told us once they are comfortable they are both very loving. PRINCESS is approximately 1.5 years old and SUNFLOWER is 7 months old. PRINCESS is a gorgeous buff colored long hair girl and SUNFLOWER has striking orange long hair. They have lived with other cats and have been around children. They have no exposure to dogs, but we do think they would prefer a home without them. This mother and daughter duo are quite bonded and we are looking for a family interested in adopting them as a pair.
