PUBLIC HEALTH, TRANSIT My main concern over the non-maskwearers is the non-complying bus drivers.

Working in a confined space, in contact with multitudes of people, many who also are maskless, the drivers who refuse to mask are an extreme danger to older seniors like me who need to rely on public transportation.

After several complaints made to bus

transit dispatch, the conclusion is that they are not enforcing the mask rule claiming that many bus drivers have medical exceptions. My suggestion that they place such non-mask-wearing drivers in other positions away from the vulnerable public, such as desk duty or cleaning the buses was disregarded as something they cannot do.

Also calls concerning this issue to the mayor’s office were not returned. May need to start calling out the police to issue $100 fines and see if that is motivation enough to force compliance…

‘The Library Isn’t Just About Books’

I

’m in the Southside Library’s parking lot for at least the third time to pick up New Mexico history books I reserved online in preparation for our podcast Reported’s fourth season.

Just a few minutes after I call the front desk with my library card number, a worker brings the books out to my car in a black plastic bag, which he places in the backseat through an open window: completely contactless and COVID-19-safe.

With the state’s historical archives closed to the public, I have had to lean heavily on the public library system.

I’m not alone.

Santa Fe’s libraries shut down in response to COVID-19 in late March, leaving only the digital library and Wi-Fi available and cutting off public computer access and other resources only within reach inside. When operations partially re-opened with limited hours and curbside pickup on May 20, circulation increased substantially. Patrons checked out 26,741 total digital and physical materials in May, which jumped to 33,462 in June. (Granted, usage is still less than if the library were physically open: in January, users checked out 59,931, for example).

Wi-Fi sessions increased by 160%, from 46,038 in April to 119,510 in June, with the vast majority of those sessions taking place from the library’s sidewalks and parking lots.

People also are participating in a virtual summer reading program with online performers, grab-and-go craft kits and a reading log where families and all ages can record their reading to earn prizes throughout the summer. The Bilingual Books and Babies program went virtual and the Santa Fe Walking Collaborative continues to convene at Southside for guided walks.

While data and public opinion show the integral part libraries play in the health of a community—especially one with major gaps in digital equity and income like Santa Fe—the city’s three libraries have already been hit with limited operating hours and employee furloughs.

Scientists are learning more about the virus that causes COVID-19 by sequencing its genomes

B

ack on March 12—a lifetime ago—the New Mexico Health Department reported the state’s first four COVID-19 cases: a Socorro couple who had recently traveled to Egypt and two women—one from Bernalillo County and the other from Santa Fe County—who had each been to New York.

I thought of those early reports recently after exploring an interactive New York Times feature that traces COVID19’s spread throughout the US. Cheerfully named “How the Virus Won,” the piece uses travel information, hidden infections and, notably, the virus’ genetic data to show how it spread across the country.

If you’re interested in a deep-dive into the genetics of this virus, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has an online white paper that lays it all out but, in a nutshell, coronaviruses—including this one—are RNA viruses, meaning they have genomes made out of ribonucleic acid. Through sequencing, scientists are able to read the specific genetic information in the RNA of SARSCoV-2, the virus that causes the disease named COVID-19.

For example, researchers cited in the Times story used genetic sampling to trace cases in 14 states back to the Seattle outbreak. More than 5,000 contagious

people moved in and out of New York City the first two weeks of March. Again, genetic sampling links thousands of cases back to that city.

New Mexico scientists also have taken up this work on a variety of fronts. At the state level, New Mexico is part of a national collaboration through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducting genome sequencing using existing samples from the state’s Scientific Laboratory Division (the state lab).

Deputy State Epidemiologist Chad Smelser tells me the virus had multiple introductions into New Mexico, with our early cases corresponding with those in New York and “some of our neighboring states.” As noted, we also had early cases associated with travel to Egypt.

In addition to showing which strains of the virus came here, sequencing the virus has other benefits, Smelser notes, such as educating the public about the dangers of traveling, “which is one of the main things we discouraged during this pandemic, because we don’t want to spread the virus around.” The sequencing work also helps scientists see how the virus is changing over time.

Tracking those changes helps ensure diagnostic testing keeps pace. That’s one of the objectives for a new website launched by Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Bioscience Division. The

The latter field, he notes, is not a large one and not many researchers—be they epidemiologists or genomicists—“have adequate knowledge of the right technologies, the right tools and the right type of hardware that would be required to be able to process all this data properly.”

This type of computational work could not have happened a decade ago, he notes.

The first time genomics was really utilized was in the early 2000s for the Ebola outbreak but, even today, only a few thousand genomes have been sequenced for Ebola, “whereas even after the first few months of the [SARS-CoV-2] outbreak hitting North America, there were tens of thousands of genomes available for this work.”

That’s in part because the virus has been so widespread and due to increasing understanding of genome sequencing’s value to public health responses. And, of course, the technology has advanced rapidly. All those factors have made the scale of genome sequencing for this outbreak unprecedented, Chain says, however: “From here on and out, you will see genome sequencing as the first line tool to try to understand the outbreak.”

COVID-19 Genome Analytics site (covid19.edgebioinformatics.org) screens current COVID-19 assays (basically tests that determine the accuracy of the tests) against the sequences to determine the most reliable ones for diagnosing the disease itself as the virus’ genetics shift.

The diagnostic angle “is extremely important,” LANL scientist Patrick Chain says. “The virus mutates over time; it’s not very fast, but some of those mutations are what allows researchers to track its progress and advancement along a geographic map. We were evaluating the mutations to see whether or not they effect the particular regions of the virus that are being targeted” by the testing re-agents used in the diagnostic tests.

Then there’s the information the genomes provide about the different strains of the virus. The site can generate a complete SARS-CoV-2 genome for public data repositories and, moreover, provides tools for public health researchers who might not have either the background or resources for advanced bioinformatics.

“We’re hoping to help public health labs, other state labs and researchers around the world be able to process the genetic sequencing data in a very easy and streamlined fashion that’s also standardized between groups,” says

In 1976, she moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where she established a similar studio and taught in the Danish Adult Education system. She exhibited extensively in Europe during her seven years there. Her move back to the US was to Santa Fe, New Mexico. She taught first at the College of Santa Fe and then at Santa Fe Prep School, where she was chair of the Art Department and taught for 27 years. Retired from teaching in 2011, Yozell is now full time in her studio.

hese are some of the last sentences Rudolfo Anaya, a native son of New Mexico, published before he died on June 28: “Querencia is love of home, love of place,” he writes in an essay called “Querencia, Mi patria chica.”

“We live in a big country, but we also live in the smaller patria chica that contains the villages of the vicinity, los vecinos. Every village or town is a city-state, a patria chica. Love for our querencia spreads out to the larger country. Our love is strong because it has its center at home, in our casita, en los solares, our neighbors, the land, the river, and the llano.”

The essay is the foreword to the new anthology Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland, published by University of New Mexico Press and edited by Vanessa Fonseca-Chávez, Levi Romero and Spencer R. Herrera. But Anaya’s explanation of querencia is also a summary of his career-long preoccupations as New Mexico’s godfather of Chicano literature and emissary of la cultura.

Anaya sowed the gospel of his querencia far and wide with the 1972 publication of his novel Bless Me, Ultima. That bestseller helped to articulate a New Mexican identity even for native nuevomexicanos who were born here all their lives, as the dicho goes.

The story’s protagonist is a young boy, as Anaya once was, growing up on the eastern plains near Santa Rosa just after World War II. He is shaped by the spiritu-

al worldview of an elderly curandera who comes to live with his family.

According to Anaya’s friend and University of New Mexico colleague Romero, who currently serves as the state poet laureate, “He always wrote from that spiritual place.”

Romero says his intention was for Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland—which brings together perspectives and experiences from Chicanx and Indigenous writers all over the state—to serve in part as a tribute to another valuable exploration of identity. The book he refers to is Ceremony of Brotherhood, a commemorative anthology on the Pueblo Revolt that was published in 1981 and edited by Acoma poet Simon J. Ortiz—and Anaya.

Anaya was the first mainstream author to delve into a uniquely New Mexican dual cultural identity. Santa Fe writer Carmella Padilla, a former UNM student of his, had a four-hour conversation with Anaya a few years ago for a New Mexico Magazine profile. She remembers, “He called himself Indo-Hispano. It’s interesting, that term ‘Indo’ comes first. It’s a recognition of your Indigenous history with a blend of European culture, which you can’t deny here.”

Romero marvels at the full-circle timing of Anaya’s death. The author passed on the same day Romero and his two co-editors took part in a Zoom panel hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center to launch Querencia. One of those editors, Fonseca-Chávez, focuses in her essay “Contested Querencia” on the continuing cultural conflict surrounding the legacy of Juan de Oñate y Salazar, the

Something OLDER Café Mimosa rebrands while Coquette layers in the love

t was already easy to love Café Mimosa, what with its dedication to brunch, sparkling wine and providing a safe and open space for LGBTQIA+ Santa Feans at its Pan@ Mimosa series of events (RIP). But, like a lot of restaurants, when COVID-19 hit, the eatery had to make adjustments. As such, the brainchild of chef Alex Hadidi has rebranded to become Marquez Deli (513C Camino de los Marquez, 365-2112), a counter service spot with a few tables for dine-in. Frankly, it looks amazing.

“Respecting the need to be aware, for masks, for social distancing—it seemed like a good time to pivot,” says Lisa Dion, part owner and part-time Santa Fean. Dion splits her days between San Francisco and Santa Fe, where she works alongside Hadidi. “Alex has been wanting to do this for a long time.”

Sandwiches have become the star of the show with Hadidi sourcing most everything locally and spending long hours brining, spicing, rubbing and smoking the meats. Dion says he uses 16 spices, and the process takes roughly 8 to 10 days to complete, but the final product is so worth it. He taught the techniques, as well as BBQ and charcuterie, at Le Cordon Bleu, according to

Dion, so you can assume great things.

Additionally, the customer’s firmly in the driver’s seat when it comes to selection. You can build any sandwich you might want, so long as it’s made with the ingredients on hand. You’ll also find offerings like classic pastrami (housesmoked meat on toasted rye; $9) and the Santa Fe beef au jus (roast beef, onion and Swiss with a roasted green chile au jus; $10). There’s lots of vegetarian options, too, such as the Beatnik (beets, red peppers and Portabella mushrooms with a pesto spread; $10) and a cheddar or gruyere grilled cheese ($7), plus chips, potato salad or house salad on the side. That’s not even getting into the house made soups like mushroom bisque and roasted tomato ($5-$7), the salads ($6-$8) and personal-sized pizzas with gluten-free or gluten-full house made crust ($6.50$8.50)—or the same weekend brunches for which Café Mimosa was known.

“This just made more sense,” Dion says, adding that the switch to sandwiches makes it easy for Marquez Deli to do more catering. “[Hadidi] has this passion for meat and a lot of experience under his belt—he wanted to bring that passion to Santa Fe.”

After time spent in Montauk, New York, Germany and her native Wisconsin, on-again/off-again Santa Fean Caitlin Olsen has returned with an exciting cake-filled vision and a new bakery on the verge of great things.

Olsen’s Coquette (coquettepastries.wixsite. com, 372-8957) began in Montauk about a year ago, but relocated to Santa Fe in February. Yes, that’s terrible timing with the pandemic but, according to Olsen, “It’s helped me examine my priorities and motivated me to dedicate myself to making this a successful business—and to have a little more control over my destiny.”

You can’t just walk into Coquette (Olsen does everything in a commercial kitchen located inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center), but you can order one of her nine cakes (lemon-glazed angelfood with raspberry Bavarian cream; coconut tres leches with mango; tiramisu and more, all $15) and have them delivered. For free. But why’s that so special in a world full of cakes (and in a city with some amazing bakeries)?

Easy—the presentation. Olsen layers her cakes into Mason jars, an element that came to pass in Montauk when

she realized she could sell baked goods on the beach, but needed a sturdy way to transport them.

Additionally, she says, several recipes are her grandmother’s, and her dedication to sourcing everything locally is borderline intense.

“I use Navajo Pride flour, which is grown on the Navajo Nation and milled in Farmington; I use Bosque Farms dairy; Iconik Coffee Roasters coffee for my tiramisu; the Santa Fe Farmers Market for berries and carrots,” she explains. “I believe in sustainability. I believe in supporting local businesses. It’s good for our economy, it’s a higher-quality product, I actually think it tastes better—and it becomes a product of the place.”

This is a far cry from her days in the tiny town of Meinerzhagen, Germany, where she’d sell brownies, cookies and apple pie from a small booth but, with more consumer-level customers onboard daily and some reported interest from regional Whole Foods stores, the future looks expansive for Olsen. Oh, and she’ll make traditional cakes, too, if you like.

“I’m exploring a couple options,” she says. “I’d love to have a brick and mortar and be able to serve some espresso, maybe.”

To see footage of US Rep. John Lewis facing down violent mobs at lunch counters, in the streets across the south and on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama truly hammers home how recently the fight for civil rights took place.

Often, we’re inundated with grainy old news footage and black-and-white photos, deepening the divide between past and present and painting a sort of half-picture that makes events like Selma, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and so on feel like a million years ago rather than the 1960s. That seems odd or wrong, especially with a wealth of color photos out there—it’s almost like another way to inadvertantly distance ourselves from recent history.

In the new documentary from filmmaker Dawn Porter, we see Lewis up close and as he is today, a hardworking Georgia congressman who phased so effortlessly from activism to public service, it’s almost hard to believe he’s that same guy who faced hateful white hordes at the Nashville sit-ins in 1960. He likes to get into what he calls “good trouble,” and he likes to fight for his beliefs. It’s easy to fall in love.

We join Emily (Liana Liberato) and Randall (Noah Le Gros), a pair of college students trying to work on their flailing relationship by vacationing at a glorious beach house belonging to Randall’s father. Only problem is, some friends of his dad’s (at least they say they’re the dad’s friends) have shown up, too, and that just doesn’t sit right with anyone—until a night of wine and weed greases the wheels of reciprocity. But then, as with most horror movies, something weird starts happening, thrusting the foursome into a terrible new reality that threatens the very fabric of existence…probably.

some of the film reel footage and photos, but never braggy about his accomplishments. This paints a moving portrait of a young man who grew up wanting to be a preacher (he’d preach to the chickens on the family farm, he says), wound up a vital player in the passages of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and ultimately became one of the most dedicated and progressive politicians working today. He’ll do so, he says, until he can no more.

Porter’s film showcases a well-earned reverence for Lewis, but fails to make it particularly interesting for the viewer. No one would dare claim civil rights are boring, but Good Trouble becomes a dry history lesson told slowly; important, yes, but awfully slow. Perhaps a narrator could have helped, or even if Porter had succeeded in opening Lewis up a little more.

Not yet, anyway. From an audience perspective, losing control can be fun, especially if it’s a gradual loss we don’t notice until it’s too late. Here, though, we’re mainly in the dark and stumbling to find anything to hold onto, as are the people in the movie. Ohmygod. He made us feel like them! Just kidding—that one’s obvious.

Liberato acts circles around Le Gros and becomes a de facto heroine for the piece; Jake Weber and Maryann Nagel as the older couple find notable ground as well, even if their chemistry, especially with the youngsters, is nonexistent. Otherwise, if this were the days of double feature DVDs, one might find The Beach House on the B-side of the similarly cosmic Color Out of Space release. But this is now, and it’s on streaming service Shudder, so at least you didn’t make a special outing to see it. (ADV)

Nevertheless, Good Trouble will probably be screened by people who are already fans and sadly ignored by those who might need it most.

But is it required viewing during the momentous Black Lives Matters movement? Yes. Show it to your kids as a primer against racism; watch it yourself as a refresher.

No one is calling former Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s dedication to politics into question here. He’s proven he cares. But the overall messaging of the new film Irresistible—which Stewart wrote and directed—comes at a rather strange time in American history, and it might come across as tone deaf, or at least not particularly timely.

Steve Carell plays Gary Zimmer, a DC-based campaign big shot grappling with the fallout of Hillary Clinton’s lost election, which might have been his fault. Meanwhile, in a dying town in rural Wisconsin, a veteran/farmer named Jack (the always excellent Chris Cooper) gains Gary’s attention with an impassioned speech about immigration gone viral.

Wanting to reconnect with Middle America (as a potential constituency, anyway), Gary heads to the Cheese Belt, offers to run Jack’s campaign and transforms the area into a political circus. His Republican counterpart Faith (a woefully underused Rose Byrne) emerges not far behind to work for the other guy—partly for similar reasons to Gary’s, partly just to humiliate

him, partly to add some low-stakes conflict— and soon, the nation’s eyes are on the race and steadily mounting complications. Oh, also, he has a crush on Jack’s daughter. Whatevs.

Had Irresistible come out a year or two ago, its tactical takedown of political spending, prejudices against small town USA and not-so-subtle jabs at Trump and big politicking might have landed with aplomb. Instead, with murderous police, COVID-19, Black Lives Matter protests, thousands sick and many more dead, it feels inconsequential. Stewart’s script is smart, and Carell is as fun as ever, but we’re also not learning anything we don’t already know—politics sure are messed up, right? Irresistible is unlikely to change minds.

Granted, there’s a twist you might not see coming that asks us to delve into our own weird notions of America and its denizens, but there’s really nobody to side with. That is obviously Stewart’s point, but one that seems frivolous when the question in the country has become less about how to work within the system and more about how to dismantle it.

Toss in a few comedy standby jokes and some bit parts from Natasha Lyonne and Topher Grace, and you’ll forget you chuckled once or twice at this movie within the month. (ADV)

These darling siblings were recently brought to F&F in hopes of finding a loving home together. Both kittens are sweet and playful. They enjoy playing with each other or snuggling away the afternoon together.

They both have beautiful markings. LUCCA and LUCCY are approximately 3 months old. We are hoping to find a family to adopt them as a pair.
