ONLINE, JUNE 23: “SANTA FE POLICE FATALLY SHOOT MAN”

LIFESAVER This is a clarification on the Santa Fe police shooting last week. The tragic events began on West De Vargas Street behind my office.

I was in the parking lot on the other side of the building picking up some things from the back seat, when I noticed a young man on my right and an officer on my left.

As the officer spoke with the young man, his voice changed. I looked up as he pulled his gun and [assumed] a shooting stance. I looked at the young man and he had already pulled a gun. I thought, gunfight! I credit the officer’s quick draw and professional stance in causing the young man to flee rather than start shooting. The officer chased him and he died at the Inn of Loretto.

There have been too many unwarranted police shootings in this country. However, the officer’s actions in this instance were totally justified because they were clearly involved with a man who didn’t hesitate to pull a gun and as far as they knew, had already shot someone. In this instance, the

police officer deserves to be honored for acting quickly, competently and fearlessly.

He just may have saved my life.

Pets Without Vets COVID-19 highlighted New Mexico’s shortage in veterinary care and caused a spike in problems like parvo

A

gray and white, striped kitten lies belly-up on an operating table, the rise and fall of its breath barely perceptible under the stupor of anesthesia. Yet its heartbeat comes in steady on the monitor as veterinarian Rick Snook makes a small incision in the kitten’s abdomen and deftly removes its reproductive organs.

Snook has nearly four decades of experience spaying and neutering pets, and it takes him just a few minutes to complete the procedure.

On an adjacent table, lead tech Dora Montaño prepares a second kitten—a tabby this time. Snook ties off the last stitch on the first cat and then turns to the other table, picks up a fresh set of tools and repeats the surgery.

In an average year, the Española Humane Society’s spay and neuter clinic, which is free and open to the public, performs about 40 surgeries a day.

That number dropped significantly in 2020. The clinic closed its doors com-

pletely for two months. Once it reopened, it could not operate at full capacity due to the social distancing requirements of COVID-19 safety protocols. The Humane Society also stopped offering free vaccination clinics.

The shelter has now fully reopened its spay and neuter and vaccine clinics, but is still working through a backlog of clients.

Appointments are booked out until September, and the shelter is beginning to see the impacts of a year without these basic services.

“We are definitely concerned about the number of pets coming into the shelter and we can link that directly to the lack of spay and neuter services in the last year,” says Karina Exell, director of operations at the shelter.

Vets across Northern New Mexico say the pandemic exacerbated an existing shortage in veterinary care in the region as clinics were forced to shut down or reduce hours and services.

Now, many are underwater as they face heightened demand and the consequences of delayed care.

“There was already an existing issue with not having enough veterinarians in the state, but then having them be unable to see patients has just made it catastrophic,” says veterinarian Rowen

Welcome, whose 24-hour emergency clinic in Albuquerque, the Route 66 Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center, has absorbed much of the impact as smaller rural providers closed their doors.

The shortage has left everyday pet owners without many options.

White Rock resident Katrina Poznan adopted a new dog from the Española Humane Society in June. A week later she noticed it was wheezing and struggling to breathe normally.

Poznan’s established veterinarian in Los Alamos could not see the dog until the end of August, and other clinics in the area told her they were not taking new clients. Poznan was finally able to take the dog to the Española shelter for an examination since she had adopted it so recently, but worries other pet owners might have no other option than to drive down to Albuquerque to wait for their pet to be seen at a walk-in emergency clinic.

“This was really stressful…It would be great if we had enough capacity in Santa Fe and Los Alamos counties for non-emergency situations to not tax the Albuquerque emergency services,” she says.

Welcome says her emergency clinic is seeing an uptick in preventable medical problems, such as a statewide spike in parvo infections.

The parvo virus is transmitted through feces, and can survive in the ground and on surfaces for up to a year. The disease it

“We’ve seen more parvo this year than I think we ever have before, and that’s because people weren’t vaccinating their pets when they got puppies,” says Welcome. “Our parvo ward has not been empty in over a year.”

Route 66 and the Española Humane Society are among the many clinics that report they are desperate to hire additional veterinarians and vet techs to deal with the increased demand. But there is no veterinary school in the state, and Welcome says this makes it hard to find qualified candidates to fill vacant positions.

The strain of the demand is palpable in the voices of staff members and voicemail messages at the clinics SFR called for this story.

At some, harried staff members tell SFR directors and doctors are too busy to be interviewed.

“Normally we have four vets, but now we only have one. We are slammed,” the woman who answers the phone at the Valley Veterinary Clinic in Pojoaque tells SFR. The voicemail for Route 66 bears a direct plea to clients: “Due to the COVID-19 virus we are seeing an unprecedented number of patients,” a woman’s voice says in the recording. “We are doing our very best to see each and every one of your pets as fast as we can without compromising medical care. As a result, our wait times have increased significantly.”

Pre-pandemic, two animal hospitals in Santa Fe offered after-hours emergency and urgent care services, but one shut down and the other reduced its hours, forcing pet owners from across the northern reaches of the state to drive to Albuquerque to seek care.

As a result, Welcome says the demand for her clinic has increased three-fold. She says she hired a veterinary social worker this year to help her staff members deal with stress and exhaustion and mediate conflicts with upset clients.

Welcome says she’s never had to deal with so many aggressive pet owners taking their anger and desperation out on her staff.

Leroy Campos, clinic lead at the Animal Clinic of Los Alamos, says the silver lining may be that the pandemic has shone a light on the role veterinary professionals play in pet lovers’ daily lives—and the challenges they faced even before COVID-19.

“It has really shown that we are essential workers...,” he says. “I think it’s brought more awareness to the veterinary profession.”

Yet this solution was inaccessible to many New Mexico residents during the pandemic as the shutdown forced pet owners to wait weeks and even months for appointments.

her work to a whole new level.

“It was honoring Black History Month,” she says of her winning piece, “and I love complementary color. She attended the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy, the Boston Museum School and has a BS in art education from Tufts University.

In 1976, she moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where she established a similar studio and taught in the Danish Adult Education system. She exhibited extensively in Europe during her seven years there. Her move back to the US was to Santa Fe. She taught first at the College of Santa Fe and then at Santa Fe Prep School, where she was chair of the Art Department and taught for 27 years. With training from the likes of Carmela Greco and Ivan Vargas Heredia, La Emi’s bringing something to the local flamenco scene that cannot be underestimated, and now that she’s back to shows at The Lodge, the lifting of pandemic restrictions couldn’t be more timely. A Mint for the Mind Please do not eat the dancers It was last October when the worst wave of the pandemic was only just beginning.

Drive-in everything became a thing, since it was either that or staring at the wall for another night. So when the New Mexico Dance Project’s unusual drive-in dance performance sold out every show within 24 hours, it was a reminder the public still craved live dance.

“Frankly, we were astounded,” Executive Director Erik Sampson tells SFR. “We were really astounded about the community’s hunger for that.”

That success last fall is part of what pushed Sampson and his wife, company co-founder and artistic director Scarlett Wynne, to produce M I N T: A Summer Collaboration of Dance.

“From a producer’s standpoint, this is gonna be the biggest collaboration for dance artists since 2019,” Sampson explains. “We’re bringing a lot of different groups together in one house. It’ll be fresh and exciting and a good opportunity for people to celebrate the lifts of restrictions.”

Sampson says he, Wynn and various other dance companies have been working on the project for months, and he describes it as part of an effort to bring more attention to the numerous local dance companies and programs that help make Santa Fe, well, Santa Fe—a kind of gathering of the local dance scene. You’ll find contemporary

ballet, jazz, Indigenous dance and other styles in the lineup.

Participating groups include the National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI), Dancing Earth Creations (a locally based Indigenous dance company), New Mexico School for the Arts students and others—and that’s not counting the many free agents who dance sans-company, plus resources from SITE Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Playhouse, Teatro Paraguas and other organizations. This will also be the first time many performers enter an actual public space since you-knowwhat started.

You might be thinking this sounds all good and dandy, but what does it have to do with a tingly herb destined for mojitos and ice creams and such? Turns out there’s one wholesome reason: “The biggest motivation behind this show and why we called it M I N T is because we wanted it to be fresh and new,” Sampson says. “[The community has] been separated for over a year now and we couldn’t think of a better way to get back together other than an event like this.”

Perhaps you’ve heard the job title intimacy director bandied about over the last couple years but haven’t really understood what it means or what it’s about. For Santa Fe-based actor and intimacy director Zoe Burke, it’s an era of stage, film and television work that brings a new level of safety to intimate scenes between actors. Burke moved to Santa Fe three years ago and has been ensconced in the local theater scene since. You can find her performing as Phoebe in the Santa Fe Classic Theater’s production of As You Like It starting July 29, and you’ll find her answering questions about intimacy direction below. (Alex De Vore) In a nutshell, what is an intimacy director?

An intimacy director is a movement specialist who works with actors to create choreography for moments of intimacy onstage so they’re safe, both physically and emotionally.

This allows them to still tell a dynamic, character driven-story without worrying over the scene.

People have been working on this since probably 2007 or 2008, and it really started picking up, and not at all coincidentally, with the #MeToo movement. Then, in 2017, in the film world, it became really prevalent with The Deuce on HBO. The actors requested Alicia Rodis to be their intimacy coordinator—for stage it’s “director,” for film it’s “coordinator.

With that normalization on HBO, it started getting picked up.

There are a lot of programs for training. Theatrical Intimacy Education does a lot of work, and they try to make everything accessible and equitable, especially for intimacy

coordinators of color. Heartland Intimacy Design does it, too. It’s a lot of “Here’s the tech, study it, go work with the actors,” and then they give almost realtime feedback about how the work is going, how it needs to be.

I got into it because I had a really great experience in 2019 at the International Shakespeare Center Repertory Season. One of our directors brought in an intimacy director from Albuquerque named Sean Boyd, and he did a course with the class that was an absolute game changer. Instead of “Where do I put my hands?” we had that set choreography, and it freed us up to live as the characters in those moments. I was hooked and started seeking out training.

Why is this position so important at this point in time?

Historically, the performing arts have not always been the most consentbased practice. We have this culture of “Yes, and...” where people tend to agree to whatever the director wants them to do, whatever the director wants to hear, because they want to make sure they’re consistently hirable. That can be damaging and dangerous. This is something that frees the actors up to express their boundaries and what they are or aren’t comfortable with. The performances can be better, safer and braver.

Do you think these jobs will continue to spread throughout film, television and stage industries?

I absolutely do. I really think it’s going to kind of get the same standing that a fight director would have. You’d never ever tell actors to go punch each other and figure it out—it’s ridiculous, it’s dangerous. And for the most part, actors are excited. Any sort of lack of excitement comes from a misunderstanding of the field. A fight director will have almost all of a fight figured out before they step into the room, whereas an intimacy director does a lot of work actually with the actors. We’re asking them “How do you see this story? What’s your instinct? How do we see that in choreography?” All the actors who come in have horror stories—we all have horror stories, but the actors who have been resistant to intimacy direction have really come around.

This isn’t somebody controlling vulnerable moments, it’s someone supporting them.

t happened with dizzying speed: Congress made June 19, Juneteenth, a federal holiday on June 16, 2021.

Democrats agreed with President Joe Biden that a Black-themed national holiday accompanying MLK Day was necessary after the protest marches over George Floyd’s murder, and Republicans got on board after former President Donald Trump was caught embarrassed over not knowing Juneteenth landed on the very date he’d planned to begin his reelection campaign. Trump awkwardly suggested making it a national holiday.

And thus, George Floyd, a victim of American racism, and Trump, a bigot, may be the figures most responsible for achieving the bipartisan agreement. That is not an auspicious beginning, it’s a comedy of errors.

I’ve already noted many Black writers have concerns that the full import of Juneteenth is at risk of being sold short. I share those concerns, even as the first national Juneteenth holiday appears to have been a spirited success in Santa Fe and elsewhere. I don’t begrudge mass audiences of all races having a great party—except this particular party is more than that.

What is Juneteenth? At least more people now have a basic understanding than ever.

As the story goes, in June, 1865, a

Union general informed a group of slaves in Galveston, Texas, that they were free.

They belatedly received the news after both the Emancipation Proclamation in January and the Confederate surrender that April. These enslaved people didn’t know the South had lost the Civil War and, after getting the news, they threw a joyous celebration. That’s Jubilation Day, or Juneteenth.

Initially, Juneteenth was celebrated in Texas. But its popularity spread across the country and throughout Black communities in the 1930s and, up until this year, Juneteenth celebrations have largely been intra-communal Black get-togethers with shows presented to Black audiences by Black entertainers.

This history is significant to understanding why Juneteenth survived. Why did this particular event strike a chord and inspire such devotion? And what is it saying? It’s slightly peculiar on the surface level to focus an emancipation event on slaves who were purportedly late learning they were free. For most non-Black Americans to really get it, they have to appreciate the Black folklore tradition (sometimes called signifying) which mingles humor, irony and pathos. The better this is understood, the clearer it is that Juneteenth is a time for celebration— with a slight wink—and social critique.

To that end, I recommend two literary texts that capture the spirit of the holi-

day, firstly, Frederick Douglass’ 1852 oration “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” The great abolitionist asks, “What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence?” Douglass also calls Independence Day commemoration “a sham.” The other text is Ralph Ellison’s contemporary novel, Juneteenth, published in 1999. It’s a massive satirical tome portraying an America crippled by racism and hypocrisy, swirling around the metaphor of the two-faced Emancipation Proclamation.

A Juneteenth national holiday can only truly be valuable if all Americans learn from it.

Now let’s re-examine the Juneteenth narrative. The Union general who informed the Texas slaves they were “free” was more public functionary than liberator, and his late arrival is proof that Black Americans can’t trust the world at large to define emancipation. The Texas slaves obviously hadn’t noticed significant social changes that would have indicated freedom; the promised “freedom” wasn’t real.

Still, the slaves threw a celebration party.

Better late than never. Better now than never. They celebrated because they knew they would recognize emancipation beyond a shadow of a doubt when they saw it.

Ironies like these have spoken to Black Americans by portraying an awkward relationship with America; Juneteenth ­ has always been an inherent critique of the Fourth of July (one might even call it a parody) that provided relief and uplifted millions of Blacks who suffered segregation, disenfranchisement, lynching and criminal injustice under a dubious American democracy. Juneteenth picnics and barbecues have been a real-life enactment of Frederick Douglass’ Fourth of July speech, a protest act for Black Americans to enjoy their own commemorations based on a nuanced tale of struggle rather than submit to the Fourth of July’s one-dimensional narrative simplifications. The icing on the cake was that the unofficial Black July Fourth came with our own food and music.

A Juneteenth national holiday can only truly be valuable if all Americans learn from it. Ideally, MLK Day, Black History Month and Juneteenth might make a powerhouse trio instilling civil rights commemoration, historical education and cultural appreciation. Or will we instead see overwhelmingly white Juneteenth audiences who want a good show without thinking too much about slavery’s cruelty in the past—or slavery’s legacy in the present? Will we instead get simplification, silence and cultural appropriation?

Looking at MLK Day doesn’t instill total confidence: It’s obvious King’s activist anti-poverty agenda and anti-war stance have been watered down like a bipartisan negotiation.

I have no doubt many legislators who voted for the new holiday merely see it as an opportunity for Blacks to have a barbecue and sing. They simultaneously support measures that discourage Black voting and even ban discussion of racism in classrooms. Such steps make Juneteenth feel like a sentimental travesty. In the segregated past, the politics of the holiday were implicit. Now they need to become explicit. Juneteenth events historically create private spaces for Blacks to air their feelings on oppression and disenfranchisement. Now that it’s a national event, let’s keep its real spirit alive.

Next Steps for Santa Fe’s Cultural Healing Group Announced

fter the city removed a statue of the colonist Diego de Vargas from Cathedral Park in Santa Fe last year—and after the obelisk in the center of the Santa Fe Plaza fell to protesters on Oct. 20, Indigenous Peoples Day 2020 following failed promises from Mayor Alan Webber to remove the monument—the city set about creating a group to help work out the future of such public spaces.

Dubbed Culture, History, Art, Reconciliation and Truth, the derisively-called CHART commission has faced a long road of delayed votes and public pressure since then (and Webber faces a lawsuit). But following a request for proposals the city sent out on March 8, a selection committee is recommending homegrown organization Artful Life to take over the process of deciding what’s next.

According to the Artful Life website, the organization’s goal is to create “transformational change through the beauty and power of creative collaboration.”

“We’ll be taking a multi-pronged ­approach to this—a survey, one-on-one interviews, larger gatherings…And many of these will look a little bit different than the ways people engage in public dialogue,” Martinez said in a Zoom meetand-greet with reporters last week. “We see sometimes the way public dialogue can devolve into not very fruitful conversations, so we spend a lot of time planning these gatherings to prevent this from happening.”

sations about this and we’re totally committed to the integrity of the project and all of these events. We’re very aware of the complexity of the issue here in Santa Fe.” Artful Life faces several hurdles, beginning with an expected vote before the City Council’s Finance Committee on July 6. From there, the Quality of Life Committee meets July 7 and the Public Works and Utilities Committee on July 12. The full council could take it up as soon as July 14, and $254,000 has been proposed for budgeting should the process move forward.

Martinez says that if Artful Life is approved, the organization would start by assembling a team through an opencall process. In particular, she’d like young people to apply. Beyond that, the early stages would mainly focus on fact-finding and public input, including from Indigenous New Mexicans who have historically been left out of similar conversations.

“We do understand that, in the past, the engagement has been defined as public forums, town halls, and those are just fine, but in our experience, only certain people have the free time to go to those,” Martinez tells SFR. “We have connections with dozens of individuals and organizations in Santa Fe, so we will be reaching out to them about ways they would like for us to engage in their communities. We’re willing to have meals with people in their own homes if they like; we need to be very responsive to what people tell us about how they want to be met and do everything we can to meet with them.”

t’s been seven years since singer-songwriter Felecia Ford released her first solo record Kissing Booth, and in that time, she’s been writing constantly. Ford comes back swinging this week with Ocean of Love, the culmination of life, love, lessons and hope.

You’ll find Ford performing a number of shows this week with her new band Mega Muse, so it’s obviously time for an interview.

SFR: It’s been a minute since you put out a record. Why is now the right time?

Felecia Ford: I’ve been working on this album since before the COVID lockdown. I had several songs already recorded, then we took the year off and finished it up right before I moved to Mexico. By that time it was a goal—I just wanted to get it completely done so I didn’t leave it behind. I just feel it’s the time for me. [My daughter] Bella graduated from New Mexico School for the Arts; my kids are both out of the house now, and I felt it’s time to continue my career. I never stopped doing music, I never stopped writing music, and this is my time to step out and do what I’m meant to do.

Do these songs represent any particular period of time?

The first one was written back 2015.

But really it’s just from the period from

when I finished Kissing Booth until now.

I got a huge surge during COVID, and I ended up finishing four or five of the songs, and I’ve got even more songs I didn’t release on the album that are moving toward a different sound that I didn’t want to release on this album.

I’m getting obvious rock and R&B feels, but also a kind of ­ ospel-meets-musical theatricality g here. Is that intentional?

It’s not intentional, but I feel like every songwriter in the world brings to the table what they’ve experienced. I definitely have a background in gospel.

For sure. I was going for something that could bring theatrics to the stage. The horns, the violins, everybody putting

When you mention how different sounds fit, this record has a song like “You’re the One,” which has a darker, sadder sound than the others.

Is this record like therapy?

I think every album for every artist is like therapy, whether they want to admit it or not. It’s like your inner, higher self giving you advice. I think the reason that song started out sad is that I based it off a poem I’d written about what it’s like to connect with the sunrise and sunset. In Santa Fe, the sky bursts into colors every day, and I wrote it like a love song to the sky. It’s funny you should say it seems a little sad, because the first words were “I miss you,” and “You’re magic.”

During that time, [my son] Quannah was graduating high school, and I sat down at the piano and sang “I miss you and you’re magic,” and that stuck with me. I like to have double meaning, so it also has a love song meaning, because I fell in love hard and heavy the last six years. I’m at the point now where I can write a love song. Even if it sounds sad, it’s because I’m trying to express to a lover, family, friends, people out there in the world who don’t realize how beautiful they are—they are.

Speaking of the band, I assume it’s a cavalcade of notable Santa Feans?

Absolutely. Matt McClinton was the producer of the album, he’s the co-writer of three of the tunes, I think my best tunes, and he also is my musical director now—and he is working for me, out of love. He’s pretty special, and he really believes in this project and has been an integral part of my feeling confident.

I’ve got Justin Lindsey, who’ll probably play guitar with me the rest of my life.

There’s Dave Turner, who has a band out of Albuquerque called Nothing But Groove, and he’s the other guitar player. Karina Wilson on strings. Randy Sanchez from Nosotros. A lot of great musicians, and others who will join me onstage soon.

Tell us about the writing process.

When you write is it, like, you quietly strumming a guitar in your bedroom?

It’s me with a piano. I’m always sitting at a piano whenever I’m coming up with the music portion, but not when I’m coming up with the lyrics. Sometimes I have the lyrics or melody and I’ll sit down and figure out what chords I’m using. Sometimes I sit down and just come up with the whole song. I’ve got probably 20 notebooks full of poetry and one-liners and ideas, and I’ll sometimes take one line from this, two lines from that, and ditch the whole rest of the poem for that one line I need, the one that starts the whole song.

Sometimes it comes to me all at once. Sometimes it comes to me over time.

So You’re Looking For a Breakfast Burrito [Vol. 1] Café Castro, The New Baking Company and Posa’s

hroughout the pandemic I kept getting to tell myself I was some kind of American hero for consistently ordering takeout from local restaurants, and now that the world is... whatever it is, my new world eating habits have changed and I long for a breakfast burrito always. On top of that, people are always asking me about my favorite this or that. “You try so much food,” they’ll say, “what’re your favorites?”

When it comes to breakfast burritos— especially in a town like Santa Fe—this is a more complicated question than one might think, so we’re setting out to tear through every breakfast burrito we can find (I say “we” because other SFR writers will help tackle the challenge) and we’re gonna pass the info along to you.

You might not think you’d find a solid breakfast burrito on a lunch and dinner joint’s menu, but at Café Castro, the menu item is so for real, you won’t care about what hour of the day you scarf it down. Still, ask around and you’ll find a contentious smothered v. handheld debate; Castro says her family’s version is “very much smothered and huge.”

Yes it is. A massive combo of egg, home fries, meat of your choosing and chile, the Café Castro breakfast burrito ($8.99) is not for the faint of heart—or for anyone who’s thinking they might like to eat more than one meal that day.

I’ve been obsessed as far back as I can remember for a few reasons: The chile at Café Castro is on point, particularly its red. Green, in my opinion, can be fairly similar in taste from eatery to eatery (with some notable exceptions); red takes a little extra effort and works best when it isn’t too thin or too thick. Denia Castro (Alma’s aunt, who has cooked in the Castro kitchen for 25 years) delivers just that. Yes, in a town like Santa Fe, chile recipes go back generations, though Carlos Castro’s rise to restaurant ownership was forged in the kitchens of places like Tomasita’s and Vanessie. In other words, the menu was developed from a lifetime of expertise, and it’s now being honed, tweaked and otherwise perfected by subsequent generations.

“The history of Castro is really the history of New Mexican food,” Alma explains. “My parents worked at Tomasita’s as young folks, they met there, and for many years they’ve been friends with the

folks in charge there, the folks at Atrisco and Tía Sophia’s—Santa Fe is such a welcoming place, and as much as we say there are so many recipes for chile, we know each other and many of these recipes have been here since...It’s funny when people come in and say ‘Your chile tastes different,’ because, yes, chile can taste different at different restaurants, but my dad learned to make it from the people at Tomasita’s.”

Thus, you’re getting a deeply embedded historical taste test when ­ you order up the breakfast burrito from this particular Midtown eatery. The egg-to-potato ratio is practically perfect, and the home fries—chosen, according to Alma, because they needed a potato that would stand up to the structural stress of a smothered burrito—add a texture and crispiness while also soaking up the chile. Pro tip: Instead of slapping honey on your sopaipilla, shovel some of the burrito inside and thank me later.

“One thing my parents instilled in me is that good business begets good business,” Alma tells SFR. “Especially during the pandemic when things got really dark and we needed to help each other. We tried to advocate for small business as much as we could, we tried to keep our prices low while [the price of ] meat skyrocketed and we couldn’t always get produce—for the people who aren’t tourists, who aren’t independently wealthy, who live on the Southside.

Our customers have supported us through everything.”

In exchange, you get one of the best breakfast burritos ever around.

Thankfully, by the following year, Filiberto and Norma Rodriguez opened The New Baking Company with a more focused menu, a less cluttered dining room and, thank the universe, the selfsame breakfast burrito we all love. In the smothered v. handheld debate, handheld wins out here, and you’re unlikely to find a better egg-to-potato ratio anyplace in town.

Toss in a more-than-reasonable price ($6.50) and a staff that’ll remember you by name forever and ever, and you start to understand why longtime regulars were so terrified as the original closed. Pro tip: I vote green for this particular burrito—and get a croissant on the side, then pop in any burrito contents that may have fallen out.

Posa’s 3538 Zafarano Drive, (505) 473-3454; Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Every Day As I was elbow deep in a massive handheld breakfast burrito ($6.40) with red chile the other day (thanks to SFR art director Anson Stevens-Bollen), I wondered if I was just hungry, or if this was indeed one of the best breakfast burritos of all time.

I duplicated the order a second time later that week in the interest of science, and the results are in: The red chile, no-meat breakfast burrito from Posa’s is insane, and it’s almost all I could think about for days.

Simply put, I think it’s the melty cheese and flavorful red. Like, if there had been no eggs or potatoes, I’d have been fine (I know I’m basically describing an enchilada at a certain point). Pro tip: One’s enough for two people, frankly, but you probably won’t want to share. Listen to your heart and get everyone their own burrito.

In 1969, with the country’s eyes on Woodstock and the moon landing, the Harlem Cultural Festival took over Mount Morris Park (today Marcus Garvey Park) in New York City for six consecutive weekends of shows—every last one of them something incredible. Stevie Wonder, The Fifth Dimension, Nina Simone, BB King, Hugh Masekela, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Pops Staples and the Staples Singers, Mahalia Jackson and on and on and on and...

The series was promptly lost to history.

Oh, it was filmed professionally by a guy named Hal Tulchin (who died in 2017), but nobody wanted to buy the historic, brilliant, crystal-clear, world-changing footage. And so it sat in some basement for the last 50 years, until Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (of The Roots) caught wind of it, unearthed the tapes and put together his first documentary—Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a bit of an indie darling that wowed crowds at Sundance and now comes to theaters and streaming service Hulu.

First things first—it’s almost unbelievable such a feat took place. As we learn in the film, Black culture was phasing from stories of trauma and staid, “acceptable” forms of dress, culture and existence.

It was ’69, the year the world first heard the phrase “Black is beautiful;” the year former New York Times journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault (who

++ IT’S, UH, KINDA FUN? -- BAD LOGIC; WIDE ANGLE LENS DISTRACTS

The moves of No Sudden Move are indeed sudden. You could make the argument it’s a purposeful style—the use of Warner Brother’s old studio card at the beginning is a hint you’re getting something like the great spy thrillers of the ’70s, a la The French Connection. You aren’t getting that.

Steven Soderbergh’s latest crime thriller is engaging and at its best when it has fun with the premise. Don Cheadle and Benecio Del Toro (both of whom starred in Soderbergh’s Traffic 21 years ago) play old-timey criminals who take on an easy job holding a family hostage for a few hours. But the simplicity is only a facade, the crime is far more complex than either anticipated and things—get this—fall apart. The criminal corporate espionage world of Detroit’s automobile industry in the 1950s draws them into a plot that changes and moves like a cheerleading routine.

As a meat-and-potatoes crime thriller, No Sudden Move feeds, but after the sixth or seventh twist, it’s almost like screenwriter Ed Solomon (the Bill & Ted movies) is begging you to understand he’s clever. It’s the cinematic

So why, when Woodstock amounted to little more than three days of miserable mud, neardeaths and some of the most notoriously terrible performances of all time, do so few people know about the Harlem Cultural Festival? As Tulchin tells Thompson in the film, he tried to sell it as “The Black Woodstock,” later lamenting how that didn’t help one bit.

But today, through interviews with performers, promoters and attendees, Thompson paints a picture of a world in flux both defined and spurred by the soundtrack of the festival, and it is glorious.

Unlike other music docs, Thompson highlights longer performance sections (Jackson, Simone, King and Stevie shine in particular), but whereas Summer of Soul could have been strictly about the music, we veer into the overarching American culture and race politics of the day.

A response could go either way for viewers.

On one hand, this is well-worn territory, particularly within the documentary milieu. Other films have dug deeper and been more effective in their

equivalent of that literary type you meet at a party; he’s cool, but keeps following you around to talking Dostoevsky even when you’re getting into your car to go home. Soderbergh is checking boxes and moving on to the next thing.

No Sudden Move is shot in anamorphic wide lens for God-knows-what creative decision, but it’s like watching the actors through the fish tanks at Petco. This isn’t a direct-to-streaming accident, either, and it would’ve looked just as foolish in a theater. No longer can we give brownie points for faux CinemaScope and fake old-timey choices. (Yes, Mank, this is also directed at you.)

Fan of the Ocean’s 11 series, or anything from the Coen Brothers? Here you go, have fun.

++ WILD AND FUN; LESSER-KNOWN MUSIC HISTORY

Turns out pretty much every band you’ve ever loved in your life was influenced by California weirdo pop-rockers Sparks. OK, that’s a stretch, but if you’ve bumped any pop-rock record after

storytelling, and Thompson’s glimpses can feel rushed before it’s back to footage of some other notable performance from the fest. On the other hand, how would one even begin to tell the story of the series’ impact without digging into the events that helped cause it? Thompson does well in tying performances to events, especially when someone like present-day Marilyn McCoo tearfully squeaks out that she was “so happy to be there,” or a civilian attendee points out how their entire worldview changed during the course of the festival.

Summer of Soul goes beyond mere journalism to highlight the Harlem Cultural Festival’s vast importance without finger-wagging. If we weren’t there, we likely wouldn’t have known. And while that’s certainly outrageous and another example of the whitewashing of America’s cultural history, Thompson seemingly wants us to just be glad we know now. It’s not hard to do so—and you’re not likely to find another gathering of musicians that feels as joyous as this probably did in your lifetime.

Even watching it in a theater feels celebratory.

Shout that far and wide.

1974 (or any synth record after 1979), just know the purveyors of those albums were almost undoubtedly inspired by or otherwise indebted to Sparks’ Ron and Russell Mael—and filmmaker Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) is out to prove that with his first-ever documentary, The Sparks Brothers.

Following the notorious, mysterious and ­ever-evolving career of the brothers Mael becomes a veritable schooling on the who, what, where, when, why and how of the very trajectory of rock music, from the glam rock-meets-classical weirdness of “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both of Us,” to the Giorgio Moroder-produced No. 1 in Heaven and up through the band’s unexpectedly wonderful FFS project with Scottish post-rockers Franz Ferdinand in 2015 (and beyond). Through interviews with collaborators, former bandmates, current musical titans and actors, comics, singers, artists, etc., Wright tours it all—early sojourns to Beatles shows, elusive American success (and bonkers European adulation), coffee breaks, McCartney tributes and on and on and on...Seems no one who made or makes music since the mid-’70s didn’t have Sparks on their radar, and getting a documentary film while Ron and Russell are still alive feels both timely and vital.

They’re funny, you know, and this winds up being much of the point (which would obvious-

ly resonate with a filmmaker like Wright, what with his particular brand of wit)—that a band could take its work incredibly seriously while poking fun at everything possible, as does a career that spans five decades witho ut ever selling out, corrupting or otherwise morphing into anything other than what its creators desired. That simply doesn’t happen often enough, if at all, and if you don’t know Sparks, you really should rectify that immediately.

Wright does veer into a sort of hero worship position rather than that of objective storyteller, and there are only so many times we can hear Beck or Jane Wiedlin or Todd Rundgren repeat how Sparks were ahead of their time or important to everyone or deliciously weird. Still, it’s hard not to fall in love and impossible not to bob one’s head along with 25 albums’ worth of jams.

Sparks remains cutting-edge and charismatically, pitch-perfectly captures hearts during their own appearances in The Sparks Brothers. A good music doc should leave one feeling at least mildly obsessed. With luck, Wright’s opus will finally give Sparks that kind of attention in America. As one of the talking heads says in the film, to those who come late to the party, the point is not to gatekeep, but to simply and warmly say welcome aboard.

RANGO was adopted from F&F in 2011 but returned to us because his family could not take him when they moved.

RANGO is FIV+ but in good health. He is very sweet and sociable, loves to be rubbed and brushed, and shows his love by head-butting his human. He is a lovely, gentle companion, but would be happiest as the only cat in the house; he would probably be fine with larger dogs (he tends to dominate smaller animals). RANGO is a very handsome Birman mix boy with large blue eyes and a long thick coat. He is approximately 15 years old and can be seen by appointment.

How about if you call it “Exciting Love River” or “Perfectly Imperfect Thrill” or “Amazing Maze”? Have fun dreaming up further possibilities!

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Académie Française is an organization devoted to preserving the purity and integrity of the French language. One of its ongoing missions is to resist the casual incorporation of English words, which the younger generation of French people is inclined to do. Among anglicisms that don’t have the Académie’s approval: podcast, clickbait, chick-lit, deadline, hashtag, marketing, timelapse, and showrunner.

The ban doesn’t stop anyone from using the words, of course, but simply avoids giving them official recognition. I appreciate the noble intentions of the Académie, but regard its crusade as a losing battle that has minimal impact. In the coming weeks, I advise you to refrain from behavior that resembles the Académie’s. Resist the temptation of quixotic idealism. Be realistic and pragmatic. You Geminis often thrive in environments that welcome idiosyncrasies, improvisation, informality, and experimentation—especially now.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Psychotherapist and author Clarissa Pinkola Estés poetically refers to the source of our creativity as “the river under the river.” It’s the deep primal energy that “nourishes everything we make”— our “writing, painting, thinking, healing, doing, cooking, talking, smiling.” This river beneath the river doesn’t belong to any of us—is potentially available to all—but if harnessed correctly it works in very personal ways, fueling our unique talents.
