In Alex De Vore’s article, there was a stated assumption that the neighborhood opposition to Susan’s Liquors & Fine Wines moving to Agua Fria Street was a suspected NIMBY reaction. The preponderance of the 60 residents who attended the May 24 community meeting stated that they liked Susan’s and want to see them survive but not at the expense of Romero Street residents’ health and safety. The additional projected traffic of at least 80 to 90 (if not more) for six days a week is a direct threat to the overall safety of the neighborhood. Romero Street... was never designed to take on the amount of commercial and residential traffic that it currently has, let alone the additional customers and delivery vehicles produced

My grandmother’s home...would have been in the center of today’s Main Street...I think it was the summer of 1944 when I, then 10 years old, was down in the pasture and I heard the train coming down the track from Cumbres. I ran over and stood several feet to the side of the tracks, waving to the engineer. The train began to slow down. Then it stopped! And the engineer looked down at me. “Can I give you a ride, young man?” he asked. He pointed at the steps beside the engine and before you know it, there I was up in the cab! He took my hand and placed it on the throttle, slowly advancing it, and I felt the giant locomotive begin to move.

Biz In LGBTQ-dense Santa Fe, networking opportunities, solidarity among queerowned businesses await

C

orporate sponsorship of Pride has drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ groups for advertising ostensible allyship during the month of June as a way of increasing profits—“rainbow-washing,” some call it.

But for local queer business owners, the month of June isn’t a time to leverage their identities to bolster bottom lines.

Ojo Optique owner Adam Hoffberg tells SFR he hopes gay-owned businesses are supported all year round, not just during Pride month.

“If they’re a reputable business who gives good customer service and has product that appeals to the local clientele and visitors, I think they should be supported,” Hoffberg says.

And yet, despite Santa Fe’s reputation for being a queer-friendly city with a sizable LGBTQ+ population, conversations SFR had with queer business owners surfaced an absence of defined community among the gay business network that runs parallel to a shrinking number of queer public spaces. The oft-noted reality that Santa Fe has no official gay bar—the closing of Blue Rooster almost six years ago meant a loss of traditional LGBTQ+ networking—is hard to ignore in the discussion of LBGTQ+ businesses in a city that distinctly markets itself as “different.”

“You take away queer spaces and you take away the ability for queer people to

sort of naturally meet and network and connect,” says Piper Kapin, owner of Back Road Pizza. “There’s really none of that here.”

Entrepreneurs with business experience in other cities point to the benefits of organized associations, often through LGBTQ+ chambers of commerce, saying such bonds open opportunities to network and learn about policy.

New Mexico Out Business Alliance, a chamber of commerce for LGBTQ+ and ally businesses based in Albuquerque, has noted growth in its membership in the last two years because of an increasing need for businesses to embrace diversity, says executive director Pamm Meyers.

The group, which provides investments and education to businesses, hasn’t waded too far into Santa Fe yet, but she sees a chance for her organization—or another like it—to expand in the City Different.

Kapin expresses hesitation over joining a chamber of commerce with an LGBTQ+ focus for fear of mixing politics and business. But she acknowledges the value in creating opportunities for support.

“Just being able to vent and talk to other people who do the same work you do,” Kapin says of the benefits of building a queer business network in Santa Fe. “You add people’s experience as queer folks into that and it would be really cool, I think.”

Kevin Bowen, president of the local Human Rights Alliance and organizer of Santa Fe Pride 2021, attributes the lack of organized queer business community to the city’s history of openness and acceptance.

“They just run their business and do their thing and they don’t think of it in terms or context of a queer businessman or woman or person,” Bowen tells SFR.

Kapin and other queer business owners say the anecdotally large LGBTQ+ population in Santa Fe would suggest a significant number of queer-owned businesses. That hasn’t translated to an extensive network.

“We’ve been in business 18 years and unfortunately it’s not something I’ve found or experienced in any of my time,” Kapin tells SFR. She has worked to create a space for the LGBTQ+ crowd through queer open

mics and by allowing multiple organizations to use the restaurant’s space for free, though even such simple steps are relatively rare in Santa Fe. With little current infrastructure like physical spaces or organized business groups, the queer community in Santa Fe would benefit from solidarity, Bowen says.

“If we get organized,” he says, “we actually have a lot more power when it comes to certain political issues and even commerce issues with the city. It’s even more important to get businesses to support each other locally, especially gayowned businesses and BIPOC businesses.

I mean, those are all really in need of local support.”

As one of the core tenets of Pride, visibility is important to queer-owned businesses. From that visibility, Kapin says, a kinship can emerge.

“Community is helpful,” she concludes.

s we made our way through one of the worst years ever, a thought kept occurring: What do we owe each other?

It’s a basic question for any philosophy student (or fan of The Good Place), but it’s also a powerful mantra by which to live. Surely, there are many answers, but when you get right down to it, understanding seems as good as it gets sometimes.

When it comes to queer communities, however, the concept of what we owe each other feels a bit more challenging, particularly as

the COVID-19 pandemic brought us closer in some respects, but pushed us farther apart in others.

In this year’s Pride Issue, we’re looking at what it takes to parent in a post-gender world (opposite page), how unofficially queer spaces and the people who build them move and affect us (page 15), how trans sex workers can educate and activate within evolving spaces (page 16), what’s up with media representation of queerness (page 17) and the mechanics of identity (page 19). Raising Octopus Kids Adventures in gender-expansive parenting

T

he thing that made me decide I wanted to have a baby was living with a couple who were raising an incredible kid and doing a damn fine job.

They created a beautiful and very non-traditional extended family for their child by involving all kinds of adults in her life. The parents were musicians and radical activist types—they regularly hosted rehearsals of the Brass Liberation Orchestra in our living room and joined flash mobs for labor rights. (This was Oakland, 2009—flash mobs were a thing.)

They were queer and gender-creative, so when they hatched baby M, they decided to dress her in gender-neutral clothes until she was old enough to express her own preferences. Family members were clearly asked not to gift lots of ruffles or excessive quantities of pink; baby M wore mostly stripes and pants, because in our misogynist culture, “gender neutral” usually ends up meaning “not overtly feminine.”

What the parents did not know until M was old enough to tell them was that her grandmother kept a closet of secret girly dresses in her home, and when baby M got dropped off there in the morning, grandma removed the carefully curated stripes and put her in frills. She seemed to think baby M was being robbed of a girlhood, robbed of being pretty, so she took direct action. When I saw how incensed everyone involved became, I started to get a glimpse of the gender wars to which we subject our children.

The year after baby M was born, I came out as ­genderqueer, a non-binary gender identity.

I changed my name and emailed a FAQ to 93 people asking them to refer to me with “they/ them” pronouns. Publicly naming what had already been fairly obvious about

my gender non-conformity was both exhilarating and terrifying, and it opened me up to celebration, ridicule and a whole new set of microaggressions when people resisted using my pronouns or continued to call me by my deadname.

Eleven years later, most of my family still fumbles over the pronouns, and one of my father figures refuses to call me Jacks.

On the rare occasion I show up at a family event wearing a dress, I am praised for my beauty, but if I show up as my usual gender-weirdo self, I am met with silence.

I think it would be easier for everyone involved if I could just pick sides, but I can’t—something inside me is always shifting, always troubling the line.

When I finally got pregnant with a child of my own, I struggled with the decision of how to handle her gender. I have friends who are choosing to raise their kids gender neutral or gender ambiguous—they refuse to take actions that would force a preconceived set of gender norms on their child before the child is ready to ­express for themselves how they

understand their own gender. (According to experts, this usually happens around age 3.) The idea is that if you don’t put your kid in a box, they won’t have to break out of that box later on if their internal sense of gender identity doesn’t align with the sex they were assigned at birth. What this can look like in daily life is not informing folks what sex the child was assigned at birth; using gender-neutral pronouns like “they/ them” to refer to the child until they show a preference for specific pronouns; giving the child a gender-ambiguous name; and either dressing the child in fairly androgynous clothing, or alternating be-

tween clothes that are traditionally read as masculine and feminine. It’s a brave, bold and surprisingly common-sense ­approach, and it’s more widespread than you think.

While I love this approach in theory— who doesn’t want to keep their kid from being forced into a box?—my wife and I have hesitated to adopt it with our own child. The idea of endlessly having to educate and correct family, childcare providers and the public about my child’s gender sounds exhausting, and I am already exhausted by advocating for myself. I don’t want to call attention to my daughter being different—she is already dealing with feeling different because she has visibly queer parents. At 2, she is already trying to figure out why she doesn’t have a mommy and a daddy and how to get the grown-ups in her life to use the right words. I also don’t want her to feel like there’s anything wrong with being a girl, if that’s how she ends up identifying. Our culture does so much to denigrate girls and women, I want her to feel proud of who she is, and not like it’s something we might be hiding or negating. So we decided to use “she” pronouns, call her our daughter, and dress her in a wide range of clothes, from monster shirts to gauzy pink dresses and everything in between.

Our daughter’s relationship to gender has become quite interesting and fluid.

She loves playing with her toolbox and wants to be “a good fixer,” like her parents, but she also loves unicorns and rainbows. She enjoys showing off how she can carry heavy things, and strives to get as dirty as possible, but she also loves to put on an apron and bake cookies.

She frequently follows our lead and refers to grown-ups as “people” and “parents” rather than men, women, mommies and daddies; last week she asked us, “What is a man?” and we scrambled to find a creative and developmentally appropriate response. I hope she is learning that we’ll support her on all sides of the gender spectrum. As she gets older, I imagine the cultural messaging around what a girl should be will become even more intense, and we will have to be intentional in helping her keep her options open.

I hope she gets to be like an octopus or a tree frog—choosing her camouflage, changing colors at will. It has brought me some ease knowing that gender does not need to be difficult for her, at least not yet. She is free to tell us any time that we’ve got it wrong.

My Time With Max A queer artist’s legacy and impact

y first impression of Max Carlos Martinez was made over a dinner with several artists and writers hosted by a mutual friend.

Max was blunt and honest in a languid, French impressionist sort of way, and I bristled immediately at what I mistook for condescension. I was about 19 at the time, and Max was in his 50s—an older, gay, Albuquerque-born painter who so casually accepted me into his circle that I completely missed it. What was actually offered (implicit friendship) was lost someplace between his dry sense of humor and wit. I thought he was condescending, yet I felt I needed to prove myself to this older, relaxed man who was at once so incredibly New Mexican, but who seemed to ooze a kind of worldliness. Max invited me to what would later be called the El Zaguán Salons, but at the start, was merely a gathering of artists and writers who’d drink and talk late into the night at his home; the feeling was always of 1920s Paris. And though he rarely left his studio, Max was magnetic to creatives, and he plucked people he liked from their spaces, inserting them into his world.

Max lived at El Zaguán for ages, and it felt very natural to walk to his casita, a stone path heavily draped with vines and flowers and looming branches. Walking up to his door felt like something out of a different time and place entirely. It never felt like the same season. Walking

into Max’s home meant heavy white walls adorned with his own paintings—the flashes of electric blue that pervaded his work and for which he was so well-known splashed on small pieces of heavy paper, artfully arranged, leading to the man himself. I’d usually find him standing before a piece of flat wood maybe 10 feet tall, coated in brush strokes that constantly shifted from visit to visit. There, he would tape up paper like some kind of massive easel combined with a painting in its own right.

He always seemed to be bathed in the sunlight that poured in from the window, and turning to greet whoever was there to see him was both a well needed interruption from his hours of work, and also an impediment his progress. Max would wake up and start painting every single day. He’d stop and start as we sat down to chat over drinks.

As a kid, I left a volatile home behind and was bullied at school for being queer and emotionally unstable. Later, I left the now-closed Santa Fe University of Art & Design due to family tragedy, only to watch the school literally go down in flames when barracks on the campus caught fire. By the time I met Max, I was ready to fight anyone for any reason; I was more than ready to defend my art and identity and anything else if need be, and it wasn’t until he invited me to hang one of my paintings on the wall next to his own that it dawned on me: I didn’t need to fight for Max’s respect at all. I already had it.

His respect and friendship had put us on equal ground from the start, something I’d never experienced with someone I respected and looked up to so much.

Max, a powerhouse artist with a bright, sharp, dreamy mind, was a person you’d meet and never forget. As our friendship grew, I came to understand how much loss and strife had come with his identity as a young gay Chicano in Albuquerque in the ’60s and ’70s: He survived the AIDS crisis while living in New York during the ’80s; he became a driven, self-made artist who, by his own description, once sold a painting for a pack of cigarettes when he was in his 20s. As a man who occupied a space that was Chicano, American, gay and working artist, Max passed on a lot of struggle and tragedy in casual jokes, but very often seemed to be preoccupied and dreaming, somewhere else, except for moments when a quick wit caught him and made him brighten up and laugh. He was radiant when he laughed, and a clever, racy or dark joke always tickled him.

In his home, Max created a space that was rich and welcoming for LGBTQ+ people across generations and places. In

the summer of 2015, I visited almost every Friday for his salons, one of the most formative periods of my life as an artist.

We held weekly readings and in-between drank wine and whiskey, smoked cigarettes and engaged in long, shifting conversations about art, politics, local news and the general frustration and anger central to being a poor artist, which many of us were. It was an informally queer space, the first time my identity was accepted without explanation or commentary and, tantalizingly, the prevailing question became, “What else?” Queer writers would read their work aloud and, while getting half in the bag and into the spirit of the event, some of us would grab napkins and write short-form poetry to share just so we could feel involved.

Max died on New Year’s Day last year, but our friendship allowed me a peek into his world and the vision he brought to bear—one of community, identity, art, acceptance, collaboration and the rich soil cultivated for ideas; the space for artists to grow. It was a taste of a community in which identity, creativity and free thought

were not just welcomed, but encouraged; a space I was extremely fortunate to experience when I was so young. The importance and urgency of having informal, non-academic and non-competitive collaborative queer spaces has only become more obvious to me as I’ve continued on in life after my college experience and the El Zaguán Salons. These spaces become more and more necessary for LGBTQ+ people to foster around ourselves as we move through the good times and the politically volatile times. The only way through is to build community in that vein, to pull the members of that community close and build each other up. It’s on all of us to create this for ourselves, each other and LGBTQ+ youth. To build and pass on the kind of space that Max Carlos Martinez made for me, and keep that alive, is the most meaningful way to remember and honor him.

Reworking the Erotic Landscape How trans sex workers navigate, educate, activate and otherwise work the system B Y AVA WA N B L I @ava_wanbli

I

n the last 10 years, we have seen a surge of media representation placing transfemme characters into three-dimensional roles.

Many have been primary characters in stories, narratives and social media depictions, and the representation within pornography and erotic labor (read: sex work) has increased in circulation alongside other professions prior to that.

Meanwhile, many of the current conversations I’ve observed centered among cisgender individuals and transgender dating, romance and sex have been a constant back-and-forth embedded in aspects of preference: There are hordes of cisgender men interested in transwomen, and transphobic violence can arise from interactions based on transphobia, racism and homophobia. Still, trans pornography is increasingly one of the most-traversed categories sought by consumers, so we know there are many who find pleasure and romantic interest in our bodies.

It’s a known reality that, for many trans and cis people, the hypersexualization of trans bodies within pornography is one of the primary representations experienced commonly, but if this is the case, we should look closer at this first contact with trans identities and how performers can and do merge creative, artistic and activist methods with sex work.

well as a platform for activism and education. In my own artistic practice, for example, I have come to focus on the experiential ways sex workers use their art to sculpt erotic spaces into expressive areas of social change. For decades, many transfemmes and transwomen experienced their lives through the lens of sex work. Our identities have been crafted into objects of fetishization and reduced to experimentations, but with the increase of individually owned businesses, online spaces such as Twitter, OnlyFans, TikTok and other platforms that help to create, promote and sell content, transgender individuals have begun to shift sexual depictions, and there has always been a history of relationships among trans/nonbinary and queer people within these platforms.

Language in pornography is a powerful force. It operates as a system to traverse an algorithmic landscape of free video sites, OnlyFans promotions, pay video sites and the social constraints we place on ourselves. The words that operated as slurs (tranny, shemale, ladyboy, traps, hermaphrodite) are now increasingly reclaimed by the very people these words impact negatively. The online tagging system is increasingly placed in the hands of more and more trans people, so

when you type “transgirl” into a search engine, it will present different forms of videos than “tranny” will, and the concept grows each day.

Of course, sites like PornHub aren’t beacons of inclusion, and pornography should not be perceived as an identity-based educational device. But what does that kind of ground-zero exposure do for us as we redefine our bodies and usage of them? It’s important now to see that we are powerful, beautiful and gaining positions of authority and leadership across professions—now we can see erotic laborers beginning to own this form of employment.

It lays out my interests, my kinks, how I would toy with you or maybe submit to a fantasy. There is a joining of two activities at once for me. This control of my space allows me to use a toolset of education and authority for my own body. It also makes an impact on how I’ve chosen to take control of my body through many moments within my transition.

The vast history of transwomen within sex work is dense. Many are currently sex workers or find themselves very much adjacent to that world and dealing with the continued fetishization of our bodies. As such, it has been a stereotype and a dirty assumption that transwomen are often sex workers, among other

things. Within new generations of tgirl performers, the space we have been assigned within our identity is changing in a complicated dance of favors and pitfalls; the taboo treatment of sex workers parallels transwomen/femmes closely as it has been tied to our identities based on its necessity for survival and safety.

So what do we do?

We change the language and we create autonomy and authority in these hyper-sexual spaces. When it comes to OnlyFans, Chaturbate, escort ads and other areas, transfemmes have boosted a sense of self to reclaim our bodies. We make money, own our bodies and change the business of erotic labor as cisgender folks continue to be exposed to us and as trans communities continue to blossom into a deeper display of eroticism. If sex work is ground zero for many of us to understand ourselves—or for cisgender people to see us—let’s rework that world into our favor.

We are so much more than a reduced sexual object. We are sexual beings who have complete agency in the authority of our bodies’ desires.

am queer.

Through self-discovery, it feels like I traveled through many a lifetime of identity labels to finally ­arrive safely here. If you’ve never questioned your identity or sexuality, then such exploration may not seem familiar, but if you’ve been on a wide path of self-searching like I have, then I’m pretty sure that resonates.

For me, growing up in the Southern US in a religious household, exploration as a youth seemed far out of reach. Even though I’ve always been a critical thinker (questioning all the “normal” constructs), the thought of settling into my own comfortable skin was scarier than not, since much of how I wanted to express myself didn’t align with accepted cultural behavior. As for my pronouns, I’ve learned through trial and error that I truly prefer to be called by my name. I love my name. It suits me. It’s plenty. But for further clarity, I am open to any and all pronouns, as that best fits my expansiveness.

At the end of the day and at the baseline, I’m human no matter how snug the label

“queer” fits. To me, that matters more than anything. See me as human, just as you see yourself, made of the same stardust and divine particles. I get that concepts need defining in order to be fully understood, though labels cannot be the defining ways we ultimately align at the core. When you treat folks a certain way based on labels only, honestly, it’s contrived. At times that even looks like reducing folk to their oppressions. Seems to me that instead of bonding over oppressions, we start to bond over our humanity, particularly since labels often seem a contradiction to their own purpose.

I have noticed labels are starting to overtake the human part. The more we desire to be seen as our individual selves, the more labels we create in order to self-identify. Particularly when it comes to the LGBTQIA+ spectrum—which is growing in letters every day—but it’s also that way when it comes to being Black, being woman, being plant-based; being an emcee, a circus enthusiast and an artist.

Folks tend to take such labels and shrink people within them to fit their own personal standards, not allowing for the whole person to be seen and heard.

Many appear to be more comfortable treating people according to their specific labels than just relating along human lines. This keeps us divided and separate from our human nature. Then there’s the place from which we force labels on people to make our-

selves comfortable. A relatively harmless example would be when I stopped eating meat and dairy. People automatically labeled me as vegan, though according to vegans, I wasn’t vegan enough because I use honey and other bee byproducts. When I have to describe my diet these days, I just choose to say I’m plant-based. That’s just my baseline, and everything else exists on top of that.

And it seems people have a hard time accepting that there can be exceptions.

This can be a thing even in the queer community, within our own labels, but truly, even with the labels and boxes I’ve chosen, I don’t neatly fit into any of them and never have. Back in high school, I participated in almost every club, from sports to recreation, Spanish to math, and everything in between. Track and field was my main squeeze, but I tried everything available to me, because they all fit in some way or an-

other. As a circus artist, stilt-walking is my primary discipline, but I’m truly a circus generalist, as I also greatly enjoy many of the other disciplines. With art, I describe myself as interdisciplinary because, again, I create across multiple disciplines. I’m all over the place, so how would I accurately label myself in a way that accounts for both my fluidity, my expansion and my growth?

Hardly anyone is just their labels, and few fit neatly within any one definition.

Unfortunately, folks weaponize labels in a way that I don’t think is beneficial to any of us. Real and genuine areas of human concern should inform common sense behaviors and their personalities; also, consider this your friendly reminder that folks’ genitalia—and whom they share them with—is none of your business. I was always taught that my privates were personal and not for discussion, unless I say so. Home training, anyone?

What is the condition of their heart?

What is their energy like? Are they a solid person? How do they treat others? These are the kinds of things that are more important to know about somebody than their sexual preference and the other labels that often seem to precede the human.

Definitely respect any and all labels that I choose, though remember that, at the end of the day, human is the label I most prefer.

Do not sum me up by the labels and your perception of what they mean—it’s not this or that. My very existence is revolutionary, never before seen or experienced on this planet.

And yes, I am queer.

State of Queer Cinema

evitable heartbreak. The forces of the cinematic universe say we can keep the queers alive so long as we keep them sad.

The rug is always pulled out from under us, snatching away any chance for a full life onscreen.

Obviously this is a generalization that can’t logically fit an entire genre (and can we even agree that “queer” constitutes an entire genre?), but as the years roll by, the effects of these storylines keep popping up when they’re least welcome and it somehow feels more appropriate to see myself tragically than to see myself fulfilled— my ­orientation

Unsolicited thoughts for the new generation of queer filmmakers and enthusiasts

I

t’s hard to overemphasize how formative cinema can be on a young, queer mind.

If you’re anything like me, you’d be just another queer kid who’s sad about being queer, bawling over some childhood trauma and contrasting social values you grew up with in the South, and...yeah, you and my therapist know how it goes.

Queer kids find survival in the arts. In music, literature and especially (in my case) cinema, we often first find people like us. In my own formative years, I felt safest when sneaking in late-night queer cinematic binges for those long days of mental turmoil. Whether through Netflix DVDs or mid-aughts internet forums, these stories and communities were instrumental in figuring out what the hell I was. Looking back, part of me wishes I hadn’t done it to myself.

Even after coming out, a peculiar trait held firm: I was never afraid to watch anything with queerness, but I’d be embarrassed by the resolutions of the films. If a (rare) happy ending took place, I’d fall into a cold sweat and shut off my viewing device in perplexing shame when it concluded. It felt like a terrible vice—one that didn’t translate to other films ending in a way where the queer character didn’t get the lover or anything they wanted. A lot of big gay tears felt right.

Maybe these movies were a little too formative for me. Queer cinema has come a long way from the forced homophobic tropes that used to rule.

There always were cute little queers, defined entirely by a romantic pursuit (a straight-until-otherwise-noted hot person); inevitably, said cute little queer gets bullied, beaten and even outright killed. The world is so very cruel.

Nowadays, queer storylines have the privilege of being exotic—some isolated, romantic, European-esque place far off from the mainstream (see: Call Me By Your Name, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Summer of ’85, Ammonite, God’s Own Country) sets the stage. Homophobic villains are so last decade. Now we get vacation destinations, a package deal with a summer of love leading to in-

being nothing but a dragging chain on life’s possibilities. It’s not that these films have poor intentions—they weren’t trying to get me mentally strained. Hell, most of them are great works of art— Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire leaves you reaching for the smelling salts as you try to recover—but I do have to ask: Why do queer filmmakers themselves have such trouble escaping the perception that our lives must be tragic, as if such a thing is the natural bend of the universe?

At the wrong age came the idea of an inevitable tragedy about my existence. Sudden unexplained forces lingered around corners, ready to snatch

the joys of life away from me. If I fell in love, I prepared myself mentally for inevitable loss like cinema taught me to expect. Abandonment, anxiety, body image issues, and loneliness are things just scratching the surface of our mental states. We’re damn messes—cute, but still messes. And listen, I’m all for watching Timothée Chalamet cry in front of a fireplace for six minutes, but I’m also begging for more films like Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, Wong Kar-Wai’s Happy Together and Cheryl Dunye’s Watermelon Woman—three films portraying queerness in a way that’s non-tragic and where sexuality doesn’t define the crux of our problems.

That’s not to spoil anything, as it’s obvious from the get-go. But rather, they push a notion to which I wish I had access as a kid—that we can define ourselves beyond our romantic orientations, and that not every problem we have is related to that. In other words, we can get screwed up by things outside our sexuality, too. So, as filmmakers and as viewers, let’s look back to those moments when we were youthful and energetic and lacking back pain, when queer films were a safety net. We don’t need to reflex back in the other direction and make every queer film a happy-singing-animals world, but for God’s sake, we’ve got to let ourselves be painted with a broader brush.

Of course, we shouldn’t be dictating the kind of stories filmmakers tell. That defeats the point of art and stories specifically about queerness and our specific experiences matter deeply. But wouldn’t it be nice to see us doing more in our romantic odysseys? To see us on screen as something other than one-note sexual navigators or hopeless romantics? We don’t need to train ourselves to expect tragedy.

Remember, being queer is to be an other. No matter how much we preach assimilation, our life experiences have fundamental differences. We’re battling homophobia, transphobia and control over our own narratives. If you’re anything like me and you feel that tinge of embarrassment when a queer character finds joy, remember what you watched when you needed an escape. Those films are fine—but we can always do a little better.

Be Proud Pride returns after tumultuous 2020 “We didn’t know whether 2021 [Pride] would happen,” says Human Rights Alliance President Kevin Bowen. “What we originally started with has changed so much because of loosening restrictions—and some Pride celebrations haven’t even gone live this year, they’re still doing virtual. But we knew when we came back we’d have to do something special; we needed to regain lost ground.”

Because of this (and probably a lot of other reasons), Santa Fe Pride in 2021 is a doozy. The whole shebang kicks off at 8 pm on Friday, June 25 in Railyard Park (6 pm, Cerrillos Road and Paseo de Peralta; ampconcerts.org) with a screening of the Elton John biopic Rocketman, and then the dulcet tones of DJ Badcat at Dinner for Two (8 pm, 106 N Guadalupe St., 820-2075).

On Saturday morning, the festivities continue with an event called Drive— essentially an automative parade beginning at the intersection of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta. That parade ends at the Plaza at roughly noon, where revelry, dancing and merriment will go down like it couldn’t in 2020.

The HRA has also collaborated with New York City’s Youth Pride event for

a special in-person/virtual gathering at the downtown branch of the Santa Fe Public Library (11 am-3 pm, 145 Washington Ave.), and that’s not even getting into the special event later that evening at the Cowgirl with DJ Oona­­ (4 pm, 319 S Guadalupe St., 982-2565), or the afternoon closing party with DJ John Edwards at The Bridge at Santa Fe Brewing Co. on Sunday, June 27 (1 pm, 37 Fire Place, 424-3333).

“We want people to come out and celebrate, and we also want people to remember there’s stuff happening that means we still need to support each other,” Bowen says. “There is still ­anti-LGBTQ+ legislation people are trying to pass and, to put things into perspective, the first Pride celebration started one year after Stonewall—and Stonewall was started by a Black trans woman. Pride is a celebration, but it’s also a time for us to reenergize and remember the fight is not yet over.”

With Olympic Skateboarder Mariah Duran

Albuquerque’s Mariah Duran is the No. 1 ranked female skateboarder in the US, according to the Olympic World Skateboarding Ranking, which earned her a spot on the first-ever US Olympic Women’s Street Skateboarding team. Duran will compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympics on July 25 at 6 pm —tune in to NBC to watch; read on to catch our brief interview.

(Campbell Lozuaway-McComsey) You’ve been skateboarding for 14 years now. What is your end goal?

I don’t have an end goal. I feel like I’m just beginning. It’s always the beginning of skateboarding because you can’t master it, there’s always new stuff. I don’t see an end game, I see myself in the game, hopefully forever, but who knows how long forever is anymore. I’m just taking it day by day.

How do you think that skating, known for being rebellious, counterculture and cool, will be impacted by being in the Olympics?

It’s gonna get a light shined on it.

People are gonna see it on the highest platform of sport. I consider it a sport because we put our bodies through so much. I’ve done other sports, and this is different in that you go as far as you want to go. Skating is like a tree—the core and the root and the culture is always going to be the same, and you can branch off as far as you want to go, however far that might be. You find your place in that.

People are going to take it more seriously. Skaters are going to do everything they can to make sure their bodies are elite.

It’s going to grow the sport, especially for women. More are going to step on the board. The conversation is gonna be a lot easier.

Back when I started, it was considered a hobby. Now it’s in the Olympics, so that conversation with your daughter or your son, when they step on a board, now includes something to strive for.

What lessons have you learned from skating?

Get the small wins. I’ve been disciplining myself more in meditation, not just to use it when I absolutely need it, but to use it every day—not as a Band-Aid but as a vitamin. Having a clear mind is definitely key. Everyone’s fallen victim to waking up and getting on Instagram. Your brain is fried and then you’re like, “What the heck?”

Whereas you could take the extra step for the first hour of the day and do some new routine. I use the app Headspace and some breathing techniques. It helps me come to the present moment. I love going on Instagram, but I set a limit on my phone for 20 minutes a day to give me enough time to post whatever I need, but I don’t get vortexed in. It’s important to monitor the themes throughout the day.

Confidence. You find a different type of confidence when you’re the one who’s skating, who’s pushing yourself, who’s getting up after falling. It’s self-confidence trusting yourself to try tricks that seem crazy to people who think, “I don’t want to break my neck.” I’ve thought about the worst lands ever, everybody’s thought of them, but then you do it and you’re OK the majority of the time.

There’s not any limits. You can take that into everyday life. If you believe you can do something, then you’re probably right.

Hard work, because you’re introduced to failure right away.

When you step on a board for the first time, you fall, and you have to make a decision: Do you get back up and keep going, or wrap it up?

The majority of the skaters and the people who are at the top have taken the hardest slams and kept going.

You learn about trial and error, right off the bat.

And ultimately, I’m not scared to fail. If anything, failure means you’re closer to something.

A Pollination Sensation “It’s like having a new baby on campus,” Laurie Logan Brayshaw, director of sponsored programs at IAIA, explains.

“Everyone’s so excited about it. We’ve been wanting to have a program to teach individuals to do outreach about agriculture, and since we can’t have livestock we just kept thinking ‘bees’—and then we found Melanie.”

IAIA sits on 140 acres at the southernmost end of Santa Fe, but Brayshaw explains its buildings only occupy 40 of those acres. With all the open land, the school is planning for a natural restoration—ensuring runoff is controlled and straying from watering technology that isn’t organic or natural. What’s good for the campus, Brayshaw says, is good for the bees.

Institute of American Indian Arts starts up a beekeeping program— and everyone is just so dang happy

elanie Kirby (Tortugas Pueblo) was thinking about moving to San Francisco to become a DJ, but the Peace Corps came first. It was the mid-’90s, she’d just graduated from St. John’s College in Santa Fe and was looking around the world to see what the future had in store. Paraguay was the answer, and an introduction to the world of rustic South American beekeeping.

“I didn’t know anything about it, I just wanted to travel and not carry a weapon,” Kirby tells SFR. “I had no idea it was going to have as big of an impact and direct my career path as it has.”

Today, her life revolves around the buzzing little pollinators, both in her education job and on her Taos County apiary farm, Zia Queenbee Company (ziaqueenbees.com).

Kirby earned her graduate degree in entomology from Washington State University, and her studies have taken her from South America and Hawaii to Ukraine and Morocco to study honey bees and apiary culture. Now she’s set up shop as the extension educator for the land grant program at the Institute of American Indian Arts—and of course her bees are coming along, too.

The land grant program educates students as well as the broader community in traditional and modern agriculture, with a heavy focus on Indigenous methods. Kirby’s beekeeping program is part of a three-year expansion initiative for the school’s overarching agricultural offerings, and part of the idea is helping to increase pollinators and the plants serving bees across the property.

“[Bees] need a place to forage from,” she continues. “It’ll help bring up birds and bats. We want to make it as beneficial for nature as possible. It also helps make it a better environment for learning as a meditative space for students to wander through, to get close to nature, and use some of that material for classroom projects. We ask ourselves, ‘What can we do to improve life for us and for the wildlife?’”

Three hives are set up on campus; Brayshaw and Kirby note how big a hit the bees have been with the students helping Kirby acclimate them to their new home. Using biomimicry—a process wherein humans mimic a process found in nature to solve an ecological problem—the bees can get a jump start. For example, Kirby explains, colonies need a lot of nectar to get their hive going as the apiary gets established. It takes 20 pounds of nectar for bees to produce one pound of wax.

With the wax, they build their hive and store their food. But, Kirby cautions, if summer rains don’t come in turn, or the wildfire smoke gets too heavy, the bees can

starve as they head into winter.

“I get so nervous with the wildfires,” she says. “They’re beneficial, but it can take a long time to recover. It gets more challenging with the shifting climate.

When there’s a lot of smoke in the air, it’s hard for them to smell the flowers.”

Part of that biomimicry is a “tea” for the bees, a kind of organic sugar water with camomile and lemongrass that bees consume and convert into wax.

Further, with an established hive, bees have a better chance of holding out through the colder months.

Still, contingency plans are in place, such as taking the hives into the mountains if or when conditions get too arid—but Kirby says that’s all part of the challenge of raising honeybees in New Mexico, anyway. She takes inspiration from her Indigenous ancestors, who made a life in what is today New Mexico by knowing the methods of the land. Kirby describes them as the first ecologists, agriculturalists and scientists in the region.

“We’re the fifth largest state by area and one of the lowest in population. And that all comes down to water,” she says. “Our various tribal communities know that. Tribal communities would follow the natural resources by seasons, and I approach it like that with bees. If it gets too dry and too hot, I’ve got to migrate with them to greener pastures to follow that bloom. It’s all about following the bloom. These are ancestral ways that connect us to overall health.”

Despite bees facing such challenges in New Mexico’s unique range of climates, Kirby is quick to point out honeybees are not an invasive species.

“Our own American honey bee on the continent went extinct during an ice age,” she says. “Like horses, they were here pre-contact. So I see our modern day honeybees as cousins to our ancestors. Broadening that narrative and indigenizing the practice means we can do this mindfully and in tandem with other pollinator species.”

Kirby, brings it back to her relationship with the world around her.

“The bees taught me about collaboration,” she says. “We really flourish more in a community. The bees ­really have taught me that.”

Hooked Henry & the Fish nears two years of simple yet delicious breakfast and lunch fare

alking into downtown café Henry & the Fish (217 W San Francisco St., 995-1191), an R. David Marks photo of a zebra stares back at me, its black and white stripes reminiscent of cream freshly poured into coffee. I walk past the case of beautiful cookies encased like statues on exhibit ($2.75 each), pass a fridge of La Colombe canned coffees and approach the counter where owner Kelly Garcia greets my party kindly as we peruse the menu.

Kelly and her husband Joe Garcia are the original owners of the once-iconic Atomic Grill, and after a stint in Arizona, they returned to Santa Fe roughly a decade ago; their new spot is nearing two years open.

“Henry is our pet rabbit,” Kelly explains of the moniker, “and we have a fish with no name.”

Despite walking by this place almost daily, having sampled the coffee twice and only once navigated an unhelpful internet search for coffee shops, I didn’t know Henry & the Fish offered a full breakfast and lunch menu until recently (though why I never looked

above the counter at the ample food offerings remains a mystery). That menu boasts breakfast all day plus sandwiches, salads and ramen—even smoothies ($7.50-$8.50) and, according to Joe, the promise of fresh-squeezed juice and gelato later this summer. “[We were looking for] a certain type [of restaurant] that didn’t exist in Santa Fe,” Joe tells SFR. “Healthy, fast, casual with affordable prices and focusing on fresh ingredients—something approachable and non-intimidating.”

In Santa Fe, it doesn’t get any less intimidating than the humble breakfast burrito ($7), which I order with bacon for an extra $2 and an iced coffee on the side. My companions respectively order the breakfast sandwich with Sriracha mayo and the el pastor rice bowl as an employee pours my iced coffee from a Yeti cooler. As I glance about, the indoor seating appears full, as do outdoor tables that sprang up when the city made special provisions for sidewalk service during the pandemic. Ultimately, we make our way to the breezeway shared

by Henry & the Fish and the Lensic Performing Arts Center. It’s cool and comfortable while we wait.

In the meantime, Joe pops by the table. We hadn’t announced that we’d arrived in a professional capacity, but full disclosure, since SFR Culture Editor Alex De Vore and contributing writer Riley Gardner have both previously worked for the Garcias, we stand out like some kind of three-headed sore thumb. As the three make small talk, I sip my serviceable

La Colombe ($3.50) and enjoy its floral notes and lack of bitterness; when the food comes, Joe leaves us to it.

I promptly cut my burrito in half before diving into a first-blush taste of spicy, textured mush. This comes from the hashed potatoes and red chile fused together with melted cheese. With a tortilla from the Albuquerque Tortilla Company, the burrito is thin and chewy with chopped green chile and eggs that look and taste like they were cracked and scrambled mere moments before.

Light grill marks indicate some kind of press was probably used by the kitchen, but this burrito is not as crispy as I usually like. To each their own, of course,

but it could have used an extra moment or two in a press or on a grill. Still, it’s a potpourri of flavors melding and melting into each other and reaching the bottom tortilla folds.

My companion, whose breakfast sandwich ($7.75) is comprised of just three fresh ingredients on a brioche bun, chimes in: “This sandwich is honestly really good,” he says. “It’s simple, but delicious.” This is a sign of high-quality ingredients, but I can’t hear him—angels are singing spicy songs to my tastebuds.

My other companion, meanwhile, is kind enough to let me sample his el pastor taco bowl ($10.75). Inside, the brown rice teeters on al dente, its chewiness accompanied pleasantly by the crunch of red cabbage and sweet mango.

The sweet acidity of pineapple adds yet more flavor and texture elements, and the juices from the grilled chicken season the rice beautifully.

This is none too shabby for an eatery that was forced down to a skeleton crew during the pandemic. The Garcias have staffed back up in recent months, with Joe saying they “nurture [their] staff so they enjoy coming to work, as well as enjoy the electricity of the job.”

In the end, Henry & the Fish understands that all-important rule of making and sharing food with others—it need not be a periodic table’s worth of hardto-pronounce ingredients, or even a wildly innovative or bizarre take on the classics. This is recognizable coffee and food items done quickly and well. This is a reason to get up early for breakfast, even if they do serve it all day long.

While we can definitely give points to Pixar’s newest foray Luca for its gorgeous animation and light queer underpinnings (positive queer relationships in mainstream cinema are almost always a plus; see this week’s cover story, page 19), its tone, pacing, style and even narrative are so derivative of the great anime director Hayao Miyazaki that it practically passes homage for straight-up hero worship—only without bothering to understand what’s so special about films like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo, Spirited Away, etc.

Here we find Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay), a young sea monster living underwater near some sun-kissed and impossibly beautiful Italian ­village (think Cinque Terre) who longs for something more than his family’s underwater farming business. Said family (voiced capably but uninterestingly by Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan and Sandy Martin) is forever warning him to not think about the surface and its “land monsters” but, of course, our hero has feelings.

Enter Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer), another young boy with a secret that is so painfully and obviously telegraphed, they should’ve just named him Alberto Plot Device and been done with it. This guy likes taking it to the surface on the reg (because apparently these sea monsters become

Watching scary movies is like eating spicy foods—they’re acquired tastes, and if you aren’t used to it, they can make for an unpleasant experience.

Fortunately for us, Vera Farmiga (The Departed) is not an acquired taste, she’s just plain pretty good, and in the newest entry in the long-running Conjuring series (annoyingly subtitled The Devil Made Me Do It), Farmiga reprises her role as real-life “psychic” Lorraine Warren for the fifth time. She not only carries the movie by virtue of her natural performance, but because her character has the psychic skills to move the plot forward. Her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson; Hard Candy), meanwhile, is too typically 1980s man-in-charge for us to care, and he moves literally nothing forward. Either way, the Warrens are back to investigate demon shit, and it’s scary.

passable human people when they’re dry, which we’re just supposed to accept), and he gets Luca to do the same. There on land, the two meet Giulia Marcovaldo (Emma Berman), an adventurous young cycling enthusiast who lives with her dad in the summers. And so the three enter a triathlon inexplicably sponsored by a pasta company in hopes of winning prize money for a Vespa—Pixar’s idea of Italian people being that they’re all obsessed with Vespas and pasta. Luca’s family, meanwhile, wants to know where he’s going all the time, and the town bully is none too pleased, either. The rest of the town hates sea monsters...there’s an angry cat.

Setting aside the coming out/fish-outta-water idea here, Luca drags. And whereas a director like Miyazaki is a master of Ma—the Japanese concept of negative space wherein, by showing his characters experiencing normal or even boring human events, we subconsciously form attachments to them—director Enrico Casarosa’s shambling, unoriginal story feels like it’s constantly searching for things to fill the silence and rarely finding mean-

Turns out it totally is based on a real story known as the Devil Made Me Do It case (oh, that’s where the subtitle came from!), but unlike too many horror movies before it, The Conjuring throws us right into the action.

In the first half alone there are six jumpscares and five creep-outs (times you brace for a jump-scare but your expectations are subverted), and director Michael Chaves (who helmed the video for Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend”) keeps the movie tense with these and similar elements. Everything is intensified by Joseph Bishara’s score; everything is relaxed by Blondie’s “Call Me,” which totally reminds you it’s the ’80s.

Still, as the film progresses, the tension becomes more palatable. This is both a relief and a disappointment, but once the demon speaks you really can’t unring that bell; further disappointment comes in the form of a lack of motivation from particularly important characters. A shoddy revelation coupled with no reason to care about anyone other than Farmiga’s character make The Conjuring a hard sell, even if its creepier first act scares cast a semi-mem-

ingful ways to do so. Maybe there’s something to be said about leaving the womblike ocean for the scary unknown, or maybe there’s an adage about friends and family someplace in there, but even film newcomers like young kids will probably figure out this formulaic piece a few minutes in and wonder why they’ve been so underestimated.

A guy like Miyazaki never treats kids like they can’t understand the world’s tough challenges or more advanced themes—Pixar treats them like they can’t handle anything. And so it goes that Luca plays out like every other Disney thing you’ve ever seen in your life. A pity, that, as the company has proven its cutting-edge animation prowess time and time again. When will the writing ­department catch up?

++ YOU’LL FEEL ALL GIDDY AFTERWARDS -- COULD BE TRIMMED IN LENGTH JUST A BIT

It wouldn’t be fair to describe Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights as pure spectacle— but in the context of being the first major studio release in nearly a year and a half, it’s hard not to leave the theater feeling like you’ve just experienced something magnificent. Whether a large-scale musical can hold its own against the return of franchise cinema remains to be seen, but I’d love to see Miranda kick Marvel’s ass any day.

Usnavi (Anthony Ramos of Hamilton, and the best part of the movie) runs a small bodega in Washington Heights, a Manhattan neighborhood built up by immigrants terrified of approaching gentrification. He dreams of returning to his beloved Dominican Republic— and he’s far from the only one with a sueñito (little dream). All the residents of the neighborhood hold dual dreams of escape and a contrasting eternity in the neighborhood, forc-

ing recent college dropout Nina (Leslie Grace), fashion designer hopeful Vanessa (Melissa Barrera) and business dreamer Benny (Corey Hawkins) to face the hard realities of what it means to succeed.

Director Jon M. Cho (Crazy Rich Asians) gives In the Heights a hyper-reality still heavily grounded in actual realism. Its editing isn’t always clean, and the occasional screenwriting choice is questionable; no mind-bending plot twists exist here, and it prefers to linger closer to trodden paths so characters have room to explore their psyches—men and women, of all backgrounds, trying to find value in themselves. They don’t dream of fame, but of a sense of movement in their lives.

Nowadays one must warn people they’re about to see a musical—so if you’ve struggled with others, or you even just hesitate at the thought of positive filmmaking, In the Heights will be regrettably difficult for you. Still, it’s a pure film however unpolished it may be at times, and a long tribute to immigrants everywhere who’ve built themselves up from circumstances beyond their control.
