Santa Fe’s water project to pump treated effluent to the Rio Grande is an energywasting solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. Rather than rushing it into existence as the city is currently doing, it should be put on pause while the community evaluates, in a transparent process: 1. How much more water we really need, when we currently have over 20,000 acre-feet of water rights with pipes, pumps and tanks to deliver them, and are using less than half of that; 2. Alternatives to this project that would pump water in a circle. Partially treated water would be pumped to the Rio Grande at the Buckman Diversion site (it’s not all downhill), and river water, treated to clarify its considerable sediment load, would be pumped back uphill to Santa Fe. How does this help the city achieve its goal of carbon neutrality in its energy use by 2040?

3. The project is designed to exploit “return flow credits,” a weird quirk of water law that allows you to pump more than your actual water right if you return a portion of your initial withdrawal to the hydrologic system. In the real world, that means that more water would be withdrawn from the beleaguered Rio Grande, already desperately impacted by drought and overdiversion.

Good Fire

Forest. June is historically the most challenging month for fires in the state, and two fires in Santa Fe National Forest speak to this reality.

The Wolf Draw Fire and the Cuervito Fire have burned 721 and 1,621 acres, respectively. Despite that the Wolf Draw— which was caused by an illegal abandoned campfire—is nearing full containment, the need for vigilance this fire season remains at an all-time high, given the problaze conditions.

The Cuervito Fire in the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District remains in monitor status after crews managed the lightning-caused blaze to reduce the risk of future high-severity wildfires.

One hope for relief comes from the National Weather Service, which predicted that this year’s monsoon season— which tends to start at the beginning of July—is on track to deliver some much-needed moisture to New Mexican forests. (The Medio Fire near Santa Fe last summer started in mid-August.)

O

ne of New Mexico’s first fires of 2021—the Spring Fire—began as a structure blaze near the small town of Sacramento that jumped into Lincoln National Forest, burning 17 acres and one building before firefighters extinguished the flames.

Since the beginning of the year, 363 fires have burned over 71,000 acres across the state. As predicted, the year’s fire season started early and continues to ravage the Southwest amid climate change and extreme drought conditions facing the region.

With the intensity of last year’s wildfire season still fresh in the minds of many, debates over what factors contribute to such extreme fire events remain hot. But fire management conversations often leave out the voices of the original forest managers: Indigenous people.

A network of Native communities, environmental groups and government agencies are working to promote a culture of fire stewardship, instead of a system of control. For Mary Huffman, director of the Indigenous Peoples Burning Network, that means hazardous fuel reduction projects that involve controlled burns in areas where the landscape has grown unchecked.

“If we’re going to bring fire back into balance, there has to be more good fire put on the ground,” Huffman tells SFR. “And the government can’t do it all. We’re at a place where the forests are thick, the weather is hot and when the winds come up and there’s ignition, all that stuff combines into these conflagrations that are too hard to handle.”

The conditions Huffman outlines aren’t the only things stacked up against forests in New Mexico.

“We’re seeing record lows on fuel moisture,” says Julie Anne Overton, spokeswoman for Santa Fe National

As local and federal agencies work to corral the current fire situation, Indigenous communities and environmental groups are working together to address longstanding challenges across landscapes by leveraging traditional fire practices.

Huffman says that while the current model of fighting fires is useful for controlling blazes, it ignores Native fire cultures.

The exclusion began over 100 years ago when President Theodore Roosevelt’s administration took over enormous swaths of land in the Southwest through executive action, ousting Native communities from land they had managed for centuries. The consequence of his action: A relatively open landscape managed by Indigenous people transitioned into much denser forests with greater amounts of hazardous fuels—conditions that consequently led to more intense fire and erosion events.

“If the tribes haven’t really had the opportunity to take care of their landscapes with fire for a hundred years, and now they’re pretty out of balance, it’s a hard journey to fix it back,” Huffman says, adding a note of hope: “That doesn’t mean it can’t be done.”

Six years ago, the Indigenous Peoples Burning Network sprouted from a collaboration between the Yurok, Hoopa and Karuk Tribes in Northern California, and Fire Learning Network—a partnership between The Nature Conservancy, the US Forest Service and the Department of Interior—to revitalize Indigenous fire practices in the region.

Since then, the group’s work has expanded to other areas where Native communities are working to bring back their fire culture in a contemporary context.

“What it’s about is making room for more than one fire culture,” Huffman tells SFR. The Pueblo nations of Northern New Mexico are among the spots where IPBN touched down.

To open up that space, the network sat down with tribal leaders, collaborating as the Reserved Treaty Rights Lands working group.

John Waconda, a tribal resource practitioner and member of Isleta Pueblo, says the network provided “a way in which we could help each other and share...knowledge and experience and continue to practice cultural fire practices, mostly prescribed fire.”

Waconda says the plan is to leverage funding from the Reserved Treaty Rights Lands program to enable Indigneous communities to pursue projects that allow tribes to work with other agencies on ancestral lands—to remove hazardous fuels on areas outside reservation boundaries.

But to do so, tribes must comply with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s standards, which require financing to overcome bureaucratic hurdles.

The barriers include equipment costs and training to maintain qualifications.

On Indigenous fire culture Waconda says: “It has a role in nature’s cycle of restoring areas, it brings new life to areas that fire has maybe been excluded.”

A virtual event from the Nature Conservancy in New Mexico Thursday, June 10, at 10 am will outline the intricacies between Indigenous communities and fire in the state. Speakers from Native communities in Northern California and Taos Pueblo will touch on these relationships and the contemporary challenges facing Indigenous communities. While the event is free, attendees must register in advance.

anta Feans can relate to the story of engine No. 168—especially if they pick up her tale in 1938 when she stopped at a city park in Colorado Springs, not unlike our “train park” near the Salvador Perez pool.

Only instead of sitting idle forever, No. 168 was plucked up, placed on a truck, transported to the shop and overhauled after three-quarters of a century out of service.

The machine manufactured in 1883 is now the oldest in the elite fleet of six authentic steam engines that this week also began the season out of Chama, New Mexico.

That the trains can run in and out of the historic depot and along much of the original infrastructure at all is remarkable, but to see an engine of her vintage puffing along the narrow-gauge railway today is even more rare. She is one of two remaining from her class—a relic from a time when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad’s lines spun like a spiderweb across the region.

The railway completed the 64 miles of track between Antonito and Chama and over the Cumbres Pass in 1880. No. 168 made many trips over the pass in her lifetime of service in the Rockies.

In 1902, she transported President William H. Taft to the dedication of the Gunnison Tunnel, and a photo from the late 1910s or early 1920s shows her under steam at the Chama Depot. She was placed in Antlers Park in 1938; she sat there until the rescue and restoration mission began.

Fourth-generation railroader Max Casisas says her return to the line is significant.

The original Chama depot burned in 1899 and the present depot was built soon after; its “Rio Grande gold” paint is the same shade now that it was in the era of Taft’s visit, striking against the black steam engines and red passenger cars.

“It kind of means that she’s home,” Casisas tells SFR a few weeks before the honorary first run, demonstrating that the engines are gendered and anthropo-

morphized by those who love them. “I’m glad to know that she’s back alive is what it really comes down to; another old engine brought back to life.”

Casias is the Cumbres & Toltec’s designated supervisor of locomotive engineers, which means in addition to working the last four years to rebuild No. 168, he oversees the 12 engineers and half-dozen firemen who make up the crew and perform maintenance on the equipment. His boss is his dad, Marvin.

His grandfather, Antonio Gaspar Casias, had worked for the railroad before getting drafted into World War II. His great grandfather, also Max Casias, worked for the track crew in Osier, a station at an altitude of about 9,600 feet near the line’s halfway point that serves today as a lunch stop for passengers.

The trains carried freight including coal from deposits west of Chama, timber and mail, plus supplies for mining and livestock such as sheep and cows, and agricultural goods such as pintos and fruit. From the start, the San Juan Extension line, as it was called then, was also exalted for mountain and canyon vistas and sparkling glimpses of rivers during trips people took for sightseeing and transportation.

Yet, the Denver & Rio Grande stopped passenger service on the San Juan when it quit running narrow-gauge lines in the region in the early 1960s as trucks infiltrated the freight business.

ed to take joint ownership in 1970 after the commercial operator abandoned the line.

A nonprofit called Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec launched in 1980 has been instrumental in the success alongside train operators governed by a bi-state commission. The organization helped with fundraising for restoration of equipment and facilities along the line and provides docents who serve as guides for guests during rides.

Trains were severely limited for the 2020 season due to public health rules, with more trips allowed in Colorado than in New Mexico. Celebrations planned for the golden anniversary of the tourist line were punted, too. But the number of riders has already bounced back.

The pandemic season’s “bottom line result was it took away three-quarters of the organization’s revenue,” interim CEO Eric Mason tells SFR, “which for an organization the size of the Cumbres & Toltec is a catastrophic event. So, the railroad and its team really had to recreate itself in terms of how it looked at its service, operations and staffing levels....

If we flash forward to where we are today, we are sitting at just about pre-pandemic booking levels. We are maybe a few hundred seats short today of where we were year to date in 2019. It is an in-

credible recovery story so far.”

Yet, that recovery isn’t enough to ensure longevity for the historic landmark.

The losses mean a setback of three to four years on maintenance and other capital needs along the path to self-sufficiency the commission has envisioned.

While rail operations already cover their own costs, both state governments pay about $200,000 each per year toward the commission’s oversight and also kick in for capital, including about $1.1 million from the New Mexico Legislature this year. The long-term plan is that states won’t have to raise capital forever.

The future involves even more innovation: These steam trains burn coal, and not a small amount of it—5 tons for a one-way trip on an average passenger run. Coal also creates sparks that can threaten a bone-dry landscape. Those are just two of the reasons for another recent project to convert engine No. 489 into an oil-burning steam engine.

And it’s not just engines that get brought back to life. The railway and associated nonprofits have partnered to repurpose old freight cars into seating, concession cars and bathrooms, as well as to restore historic passenger cars to their original states.

Master carpenter Zell Olson is also trained as a steam engineer, but he doesn’t even like to ride the trains anymore. He’s worked on train car restoration all over the country. Of late, he’s labored for years with the Cumbres & Toltec to rebuild the wooden parts on three passenger cars from the 1880s and ’90s and is working on a fourth—replacing damaged and rotten elements with “like materials” and joinery, and returning windows and doors to operation. Elements such as hardware, lamp and seat reproductions give the final touches.

Does he look at the work as saving them? “Yes,” he tells SFR. “Some of the cars I work on are closer to compost and hardware, I would say.”

Restoration requires more than state funding and the passenger revenue can begin to provide, however. The 168 project, for example, used $600,000 from individual and family donations, as well as the Gates Family Foundation and the Narrow Gauge Preservation Association.

“We’re not just saving these old machines. We are maintaining the skills, the ethic and the lifestyle that was the railroad,” says John Bush, who retired last year as CEO and now runs a bed and breakfast in Chama with his wife, Veronica, as he stays active with railroad volunteer groups. The two joined interstate railroad commissioners and others on the historic run No. 168 made as it

eliminates buses that formerly served both ends. For now, though service between the two towns is suspended, fireman and engineer school for the season is already sold out, along with this month’s geology-focused run and the Ironhorse Roundup rides in August. In order to survive, Mason says, leaders need to cultivate “new generations of interest for the railroad.”

By the looks of the steam shop, that’s already happening. On a recent day, it was humming with activity, including two overall-clad 20-somethings with their heads together on the air system for locomotive No. 487.

“A lot of the older guys that have been here for 20 to 30 years have slowly started to retire and now we are a much, much younger crew, just trying to keep things going­—and it’s working. We are kind of carrying the torch,” says Austin Goodwin.

“It’s kind of cool to be learning all of this stuff, because there are maybe a couple hundred people in the country still doing this kind of heavy mechanical work like this. Doing hot riveting and boiler work and heavy running gear on locomotives is kind of a lost art, and

there is a lot to know about it,” Dylan Hutson chimes in.

Stathi Pappas went from the academic accomplishment of a master in industrial archaeology to the business end of a wrench as chief mechanical officer. As the project manager for the No. 168 restoration and one of the leaders of the fundraising effort, he rattles off the forensics of the process in the Chama yard and is interrupted by a phone call.

His ringtone is one shared by lots of his co-workers: the whistle of a steam locomotive.

“We are continuing this process that was once ubiquitous in this country...and we do it in one of the parts of the world where there is an unbroken tradition of the people here in the communities and the railroad kind of all being together as one,” he says just before the call. “You look at the skill sets and you look at the technology and everything that is sort of around these steam things, it’s pretty intense what you’ve got to do. It’s not like you just rebuild it once and then you run it and you blow the whistle. Everybody thinks the engineer is the hero, but at the end of the day it’s the stuff behind it that is the most special.”

Enter Teatro Paraguas, one of Santa Fe’s kickass theater companies that has conquered the Zoom art world and which brings big-time poets Joan Logghe and Art Goodtimes to our screens. Logghe’s credentials include National Endowment for the Arts bucks and a stint as Santa Fe’s poet laureate from 2010 to 2012—plus over a dozen poetry books. Goodtimes is the co-director of Talking Gourds, a Telluride Institute poetry program, and was Colorado’s Western Slope Poet Laureate from 2011 to 2013. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, these are some serious poets with some even more serious cred. Breeze is inspired by residents from Blackdom, New Mexico—a community settled by Black residents in southern New Mexico—in addition to her own ancestors from the Mende people of Sierra Leone and Assyrian immigrants from Iran. Described by form & concept as Breeze’s magnum opus, Four Sites uses visual and performance arts to explore the Black experience. Breeze culls from historical imagery, textiles, woodworking and what she calls “ancestral memory,” and as Juneteenth approaches, the show stands as a testament not only to Breeze’s practices, but to Black movements through time and around the globe that have inspired them. All Circles Vanish Tone Ranger enters the next dimension at the Motorama drive-in “I’ve had this idea of being at the foot of a portal during my show, and the show is what’s behind me,” says Alex Simon, who performs a dreamy combo of indie, pop, dance jams and psychedelia under the moniker Tone Ranger. “That sort of set the tone for the whole year.”

Simon’s dreams come true this week at the Motorama drive-in where, in partnership with SITE Santa Fe, he’ll join forces with video/computer/digital artist Morgan Barnard for Follow the Sun, a multimedia/multi-sensory audio-visual event merging film and music in a way that promises to be unlike most anything you’ve attended before. The show features other collaborators as well, but with Simon and Barnard leading the charge, you can thank the pandemic lockdowns for pushing them in this particular direction.

“I’ve worked on film scoring and various projects for awhile, but I kind of used quarantine to dive deep into cinema,” Simon tells SFR. “This was a time to start working with visual collaborators and putting a vision together. I’m coming up with direction and bringing the score and sources in, but [Barnard] is an alchemical computer genius—he knows how to make

art within the computer in a way I could never imagine.”

Essentially, the Tone Ranger sound sets the stage while the Motorama’s screen displays a combination of filmed footage starring Simon, plus other digital oddities, animation from Santa Fe’s Little Big Bang Studios and assorted auxiliary visual treats. You’ll find archival film, bizarre landscapes and inspiration from the likes of Kubrick, Tarkovsky and others.

“It’s a journey through the Southwest,” Simon says, “through landscape and desert; from a cellular level to an expansive cosmos. I think what I want to get across to people is that this show is more about long-form storytelling. This event is a catalyst for a big shift, and if I put myself in the shoes of somebody who is going out to a concert experience for the first time [since the pandemic], what would I want to see? Why would anyone want to play in this ultimate Frisbee summer league?

Ultimate Frisbee summer league is something I enjoy for a couple of reasons. First of all, I enjoy the community that ultimate Frisbee has fostered in Santa Fe. I’ve made most of my really close friends playing Frisbee, so to me it is very special because of that. And secondly, it is a really fun way to be active in the summer. I am not a go-to-the-gym person, so playing Frisbee is a fun way to get really good exercise, and you’ll meet a whole bunch of people that you otherwise would not cross paths with. It’s a really interesting and kind of diverse group of people that come from all different kinds of jobs and parts of town. Even if you have never touched a Frisbee before, I would encourage you to come out for summer league because it’s a great way to learn, and there are always people there who are willing and able to teach brand-new players. That is definitely part of our mission as a community—to encourage people

who’ve never played to give it a try, because we think it’s such a great sport. Don’t feel like you shouldn’t sign up because you don’t have any experience, as we have brand new people every year, and I think by the end of the summer they have shown so much improvement just from playing consistently and from playing with the same team.

How intense is the league?

We have a very wide range of participants. We have people that have played in national and masters’ tournaments, and we have people for whom it’s their first time ever touching a Frisbee.

So in terms of intensity, it really depends on who you are. You can bring the amount of intensity that you want to it. One of the great parts about summer league is there are people who come out and want to win, and then there are people who play because they think it’s fun and they want to hang out with their friends. So in terms of intensity, I think it’s kind of a choose-your-own-adventure situation. And part of the beauty of it is that we have such a wide range of skills so you can easily find someone on your team or on the opposing team who’s matching your intensity.

What is the commitment?

The commitment is one game a week every Thursday from midJune to mid-August. No practices, since it’s just kind of an intramural league. You show up for one game a week. You can obviously miss games if you need to. We hope that people will be able to be there for most of the games, but we know that people are traveling and that’s totally OK. Every team has somebody missing pretty much every week, so it’s not really a big commitment. We hope you can make it to most of them, but if not, that’s totally fine, too. However, I think the more you come, the more you get out of it, because you really get to know your team.

That’s my favorite thing about it: being able to play with the same people week after week because you really start to get some mojo, team mojo, and, obviously, the more you show up, the better your mojo with your team becomes.

ief Bamberg knew leaving the house during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic would be a

knowledge unbeknownst to those on the outside. Occasionally, someone brings out a bubble-blowing machine or hula hoops.

No, it’s not some pagan religious ceremony—it’s Eros Silent Disco in action.

“I didn’t even start DJing until the pandemic started,” Bamberg explains.

“Since I’m immunocompromised myself, I ­wanted to create a safe alternative for people who need to get out and miss dancing and miss live music.”

recalls. “When they saw that what we were doing was safe and within pandemic protocols, they ended up staying and dancing with us for a bit. I mean, we need to get a permit next time, but they offered to support us in the future.”

With a background in grassroots organization ranging from voter registration to advocating better climate change policy, Bamberg hopes Eros can go beyond dancing, into events that might feature a trash cleanup component or that even get people registered to vote. As Bamberg’s condition constantly reminds, public policy can be a life-or-death scenario. Bamberg sees an element of politics in silent disco, and wants the music to be a force for political change. Even if it only starts with picking up trash.

“I want to unite the music and dance communities here—channels for swing, salsa, EDM and others. I want to perform brass and bring in more live performers....I’d eventually like to tour with the system, and have more charity gigs and creatively focus. Honestly, it feels limitless right now,” Bamberg says, noting that cystic fibrosis sometimes works as a motivator. “You have these difficult things that seem like obstacles, but the motivation to live life fully is more of an opportunity. I’ve got to do the things I love.”

India House It used to be hard to choose the best North Indian food in Santa Fe. India Palace set the standard downtown, Paddy Rawal’s Raaga thrummed on Agua Fría, and India House delighted the Cerrillos Road crowd. Then, one changed hands, one closed (though Rawal has reopened a to-go version of Raaga) and India House was left to fend for itself.

Instead of taking shell-shocked newcomers for granted, though, the eatery upped its game.

The food has always been good, but chef Kewal Singh Dhindsa and company have revamped the interior, creating a more elegant experience.

Service is nearly impeccable. If there’s something to be done, someone will do it—likely smiling.

The chai is savory with a crisp finish. Paratha and naan arrive piping hot and delicious and in several varieties ($2.95-$4.95). Vegetarians have long adored India House, and the aloo gobi ($12.95) manages to coax flavor from not just cauliflower, but the potatoes as well. Paneerbased dishes deliver tender chunks of cheese with the familiar tang of makhani, the sweetness of navratan korma (both $14.95) or the richness of saag paneer ($13.95).

The tandoor clay oven turns out kebabs and other spiced meats and seafood. Dessert, if you can manage it, is highlighted by sweet puddings and custards, with mango and saffron making for two wise choices ($5.95). (Matt Grubs)

We went on a mission for Sunday fried chicken and learned something new: The veggie burgers are killing it.

Yes, they come to the table with a color scheme resembling something between deep blood and magenta, but that’s because they’re made from beets. This house recipe with brown rice, black beans and oat bran is packed with flavor and comes with quinoa salad if you’re a health nut and chips if you’re not ($12.25).

Also, if you’re not, check out that chicken. Served only on the first day of the week, it’s free range, with a home-skillet vibe fried in thin breading that’s greasy in a good way, and served with a scoop of mashed potatoes and veggie medley ($15.50).

Saturday night’s rib special draws a similar following.

You might get the impression by now that the menu is huge. We also dig on the tacos, steaks and salads, but come on—it’s really the burgers that keep the lights on. We highly recommend the green chile cheeseburger ($13.75 for a 10-oz. version, though it comes in a filling 6-oz. size as well).

Are milkshakes made with Blue Bunny ice cream a side dish or a dessert? A drink? All of the above? They come in five flavors: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, espresso and mocha ($7-$7.75). Just stop asking questions and pick one.

Café Castro The epitome of the neighborhood New Mexican spot, Café Castro called Midtown home before it was cool.

Decades later, it remains a go-to for residents from across town, and its no-frills ambiance coupled with some of the most noteworthy chile in town do not disappoint.

We snuck our lunchtime meal in between errands, starting with chips and creamy guac plus a pint of Santa Fe Brewing Co.’s Pepe Loco ($3.50), a Mexicanstyle beer that’s refreshing and delicious no matter the time of day. It paired well with red chile chicken enchiladas ($10.99), stuffed with more than enough cheese and smothered with enough chile left over to sop up with a fresh sopaipilla—over-easy egg on top, of course. Café Castro serves breakfast items all day as well, and a breakfast burrito smothered Christmas ($8.99, and that’s red and green chile both for our outof-town friends) provided a satisfying protein boost midday. The green chile was bright and spicy, but plenty flavorful, while the rich, earthy red leaned into its own thick body just right.

Our server even recognized us, making the whole thing feel homey, and when the check came, it was almost hard to believe something so good could be so affordable. Watching scary movies is like eating spicy foods— they’re acquired tastes, and if you aren’t used to it, they can make for an unpleasant experience.

Fortunately for us, Vera Farmiga (The Departed) is not an acquired taste, she’s just plain pretty good, and in the newest entry in the long-running Conjuring series (annoyingly subtitled The Devil Made Me Do It), Farmiga reprises her role as real-life “psychic” Lorraine Warren for the fifth time. She not only carries the movie by virtue of her natural performance, but because her character has the psychic skills to move the plot forward. Her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson; Hard Candy), meanwhile, is too typically 1980s man-in-charge for us to care, and he moves literally nothing forward. Either way, the Warrens are back to investigate demon shit, and it’s scary.

As the United States’ modern style of filmmaking continues its one-size-fits-all mission, South Korea’s last few decades include some astonishingly introspective works. And whereas Parasite examined classism and the myth of rising, so does Sweet & Sour explore the toxic work culture holding urban quality of life hostage— though to be clear, we’re not looking at a Bong Joon-ho masterclass here.

And hell, that’s okay.

As Jang-hyuk (Jang Ki-yong) recovers from hepatitis after a hospital stint, he develops a sweet rapport with his nurse, Da-eun (Chae Soo-bin). Their interplay is so cute and cuddly one might think they’re in the whimsical world of Wes Anderson’s lesser-known cousin, and it’s love that inspires Hyuk to improve his life, which in turn provides him with his dream job. But alas, as the rules of rom-com-drama demand, the relationship becomes strained under life’s new demands.

Sweet & Sour’s plot is tried and true, but here there’s authenticity from director KaeByeok Lee. Frantic editing and let’s-get-going pacing will surely try unacquainted American viewers, but it’s a great reflection of South Korea in the eyes of a Westerner—a nation

card before delving into the tale of Arne Johnson (Rauiri O’Connor), the first defendant in US history to plead not guilty due to demonic possession. Turns out it totally is based on a real story known as the Devil Made Me Do It case (oh, that’s where the subtitle came from!), but unlike too many horror movies before it, The Conjuring throws us right into the action.

In the first half alone there are six jumpscares and five creep-outs (times you brace for a jump-scare but your expectations are subverted), and director Michael Chaves (who helmed the video for Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend”) keeps the movie tense with these and similar elements.

Everything is intensified by Joseph Bishara’s score; everything is relaxed by Blondie’s “Call Me,” which totally reminds you it’s the ’80s.

Lee stays dedicated to his themes (with a clever or infuriating plot twist, depending on you), which hauls Sweet & Sour from cutesy moment to cutesy moment, only with stuff to say. Workaholic culture isn’t merely an attack on an individual’s time, but an attack on family life—a consistent gaslighting of young people that encourages them to wreck their personal lives for the sake of vague and un-promised notions of success.

If you’ve recently had a bad breakup with work or relationship drama holds you hostage, beware of Sweet & Sour. It’s a safe watch if you’re in a good headspace, however—funny, frantic, sweet and subtly philosophical. This is far from arthouse cinema, but some of us want to be spoon-fed good-ish feelings from time to time. (Riley Gardner) Netflix, NR, 101 min

John Krasinski probably didn’t know the kind of magic he had on his hands with 2018’s A Quiet Place, a horror/sci-fi/family drama kind of thing wherein horrific monsters from beyond the stars

Still, as the film progresses, the tension becomes more palatable. This is both a relief and a disappointment, but once the demon speaks you really can’t unring that bell; further disappointment comes in the form of a lack of motivation from particularly important characters. A shoddy revelation coupled with no reason to care about anyone other than Farmiga’s character make The Conjuring a hard sell, even if its creepier first act scares cast a semi-memorable shadow over its later and more forgettable scenes.

In A Quiet Place Part II, we get a little origin story action in a flashback to the day the Earth stood silent, or at least the day a mysterious meteor crashed into our planet, unleashing horrifying and blind but powerful monsters. They’re like a combo of Slender Man, a praying mantis and some kind of ruthless jungle cat, and though they can’t see their prey, the monsters have built-in radar like woah.

The opening minutes are the film’s best—a combination of video gamey chaos (look to the beginning of the 2013 PlayStation game The Last of Us, wherein a zombifying mold rips apart a small Texas town) and the third-act kitchen/ raptor scene from Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

Krasinski then jumps back to the fallout of the first Quiet Place’s ending, and it’s only a little noticeable that young actors Noah Jupe (Honey Boy) and Millicent Simmonds (Wonderstruck) have aged and grown. Blunt, brandishing a behemoth shotgun, is as badass as ever.

We follow the Abbott family from their utopian farm into the greater world, as signified by the literal end of the sandy path the family laid down to get around silently and barefoot.

From there, A Quiet Place II unravels into a bit of a mess, both in pacing and in narrative.

Mainly, we find callbacks to things that barely landed in the last film (or even this one’s early scenes), and that selfsame “are the monsters the monsters or are the leftover humans the monsters?” rhetoric we tend to find in movies like this rears its ugly head.

A borderline brilliant Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) shakes things up as a neighboring farmer thought dead who begrudgingly learns what it is to care about the greater good, even after one loses everything. Jupe, as good a kid actor as there is, disappears into the voice of whiny reason (he honestly goes around almost getting himself and others killed, and his talents feel wasted here) while Blunt settles into more of a supporting role to Simmonds’ turn as the golden child who would save everyone. A deaf actress playing the lead is a big deal (representation seriously matters), and the sound design built around Simmonds’ perspective is so artfully executed that we don’t even notice how it phases a­ fter a while—the true mark of a well-done subtle effect. All around her, the monster mash unfolds in percussive but silent violence—it’s cool.

If nothing else, A Quiet Place II sets the stage for its own trilogy, which does mean a less-than-satisfying resolution. Even so, Kransinski struck gold with this idea, and it wouldn’t be the worst thing to have another journey into the fray. (Alex De Vore) Violet Crown, PG-13, 97 min.
