WE CAN’T HANDLE IT As human population explodes to 8 billion and beyond, the myth of sustainability is just that—a myth. Homo sapiens has never been sustainable for this planet. Since COVID-19 emerged because of human exploitation of nature, filthy air in mega cities around the world actually became cleaner for a while, as people stayed home. Now, that pollution is increasing again, as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Humans seem bent on destroying their only living home, obsessed with the god of never-ending growth. We think we have no limits to our eating up the earth; our plutonium stores can destroy all life on earth, much of it buried in New Mexico.

Humans have disturbed novel viruses, which have been torn from their jungle/ rainforest homes, as their depleted wildlife become “bushmeat” and “entertainment” for Homo’s thoughtless societies. We are already an extinct species—we just can’t face it yet—and we are probably taking the whole world with us to extinction. Those trying to debunk the movie Planet of the Humans, will not allow themselves to face the reality of what is happening: The truth?

Falling Fast NM jail populations plummet amid joint efforts to avoid COVID-19 outbreak; positive test rates are low

ew Mexico’s 27 adult county jails have slashed their combined population by a third since the new coronavirus began tearing through the state 11 weeks ago, according to data gathered by the New Mexico Association of Counties.

On March 13, two days after New Mexico saw its first confirmed COVID-19 cases, counties held nearly 6,000 men and women behind bars; by May 27, about 4,000 sat in jails around the state, the vast majority of them awaiting trial.

Some of the largest dips have been in counties hardest hit by the virus, including McKinley (more than a 60% decrease) and San Juan (with a 45% decline). And here in Santa Fe, the county was housing nearly 35% fewer inmates than at the start of the pandemic.

The statewide numbers appear to be ticking back up since the low point on May 1, but Grace Philips, general counsel for the New Mexico Association of Counties, calls the overall trend a “significant reduction.”

The sharp decline comes from a joint effort to avoid an outbreak in jails of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus that has infected tens of thousands of inmates and guards nationwide, killing hundreds.

Officials interviewed for this story say prosecutors, defense lawyers, judges, law enforcement and jail administrators worked together early and throughout the pandemic to keep many low-level offenders out of custody—and to release people languishing in jails who didn’t pose a public safety threat, particularly the medically vulnerable. County jails house offenders sentenced to less than a year and people awaiting trials.

Though none who spoke to NMID was prepared to declare victory, the gambit appears, tentatively, to have worked.

The Santa Fe County jail now reports three inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

As of Thursday, 2,099 county jail detainees had been tested for COVID-19.

Just 22 jail inmates have tested positive, Philips told NMID. And officials have tested 2,404 jail staffers, Philips said, with 15 positive results.

No inmates or staff have died from the virus, she said.

“I don’t want to jinx it, but so far it looks like the counties really have done a good job of allowing for more distancing inside the jails, housing people in cohorts and so on,” Philips said.

The effort has led to a notable statistic: as of this week, the state’s jails are at just 43% capacity.

That contrasts sharply with the state’s 11 prisons—where inmates are held who have been convicted of crimes and are serving sentences of a year or longer— which were at 81% capacity as of Friday morning.

At the state level, just 46 inmates had been released as of earlier this week under an executive order signed in early April

by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham meant to make the prisons safer amid the pandemic. As of Tuesday, 164 state prison inmates had tested positive for the virus including a newly reported outbreak in the Otero County Prison Facility.

Bennet Baur, chief public defender for New Mexico, called the stark difference between population reduction schemes by the state and counties “unfortunate.”

“It’s a lack of systemic will or imagination,” Baur told NMID. “And it’s a failure for all of us: the courts’, the executive’s unwillingness to do anything different from the way things have always been done.”

But he was optimistic about the joint

So far, it looks like we have reduced the number of people incarcerated in jails without reducing public safety. And it looks like it has worked to keep those testing rates low, which I hope is true.

“Clearly, these are unique circumstances, so there are only so many conclusions you can draw,” Baur said. “But so far, it looks like we have reduced the number of people incarcerated in jails without reducing public safety. And it looks like it has worked to keep those testing rates low, which I hope is true.”

The effort started with law enforcement, Philips said. In nearly every jurisdiction, police and sheriffs deputies agreed to make “fewer unnecessary arrests,” Philips said, and to fine or ticket people instead for many low-level offenses that don’t pose a public safety risk.

The courts chipped in, too, she said, by ordering no arrests for failure to pay court fees.

Jail wardens scanned their populations to identify nonviolent defendants who “just didn’t need to be in jail anyway,” Philips said.

In many cases, defense lawyers and prosecutors—often working together in ways not often seen—agreed early on that

certain defendants could remain out of jail but still under supervision.

“Judges agreed that house arrest and ankle monitors would work,” said Dianna Luce, 5th Judicial District attorney and president of the New Mexico DAs’ Association. “There was even a shortage of ankle monitors for a while.”

Perhaps the largest driver of the reduction, Philips said, came from the state Probation and Parole Division’s decision to stop locking people up in county jails for so-called “technical violations”—failed drug tests, missed appointments with officers and other minor rule-breaking for people on probation and parole.

Three years ago, the last time detailed offense data were produced on the county jails, roughly a third of the incarcerated population was in on a technical violation, Philips said.

Every adult jail in the state except one—Quay County—has cut its population numbers since March 13, the association’s data show. Most jails have seen reductions of 20% or more, with Sandoval County showing the largest drop among larger facilities: more than 60%.

Despite the apparent successes, Philips said, there have been problems with testing and other aspects of the population reduction moves.

For example, corrections officers and jail contractors have refused to be tested in several New Mexico counties. Among them: Doña Ana, Grant, Lea and Quay. And in Eddy County, Philips said, 70 out of 89 staff and contractors refused a test.

In most counties, testing is optional.

Lengthy wait times for test results have led to harsh conditions, as well.

In San Miguel County, the jail was on complete lockdown for six days as officials awaited results from the state Department of Health.

This year’s reduction, all the way down to about 4,000 inmates on a given day, has happened precipitously.

Baur and Philips said there’s plenty to learn from the population reductions— mostly about who belongs in jail and who doesn’t. Both said justice system actors have been forced to reexamine the way jails are used, and there’s a possibility the numbers could remain low even once the pandemic subsides.

Luce agreed.

“Will this probably continue into the future? I expect it will, and I think it’s helped us look at who should be added to the jail population and who shouldn’t have been in it in the first place,” she said.

“Shoplifting and pointing a gun at someone are different things. I think this will change the way we do things going forward, even without the virus.”

Election officials warn central ballot tabulation could lead to reporting delays

nprecedented mail participation in Tuesday’s primary elections for major political parties in New Mexico is almost certain to spell delay for timely unofficial returns.

Ballots requested by voters and not delivered to county clerks or polling places before the 7 pm deadline on Election Day won’t get counted, but the mountain of mailed and hand-dropped paper ballots awaiting tabulation that did arrive on time could keep workers busy for many hours, or even days later.

Election results are always unofficial on election night. In fact, the state’s process allows for a three-week period during which an appointed board reviews tabulation, voter rolls, provisional ballots and other documents before certifying the official winner. Except in rare cases—like the 2018 Southern New Mexico upset that sent Xochitl Torres Small to Congress after Yvette Harrell claimed early victory—poll watchers can typically discern the victor as it gets toward bedtime and most results are reported.

It’s not likely to be so this time, warns Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver.

“For sure there will be ballots that will not be counted on Election Day or well into the night on election night. It’s going to be important for folks to understand, particularly in very close races, we may not know what the unofficial results are for possibly even a couple days after Election Day,” she said in a Facebook video last week. “That is the nature of tabulating all these votes in a central location.”

Election administrators had asked the state Supreme Court last month to close all polling places and allow instead for all-mail voting due to the public health threats posed by in-person voting. The court ruled against the request and instead encouraged people to utilize absentee voting.

They did.

As of a report issued by the Secretary of State’s office Monday morning, county clerks had received 201,409 absen-

from their inner envelopes. The act of running those paper ballots through the scanning machines to record votes can’t begin until the morning of Election Day. Salazar says a vendor tasked with mailing the county’s ballots had sent out all the 39,062 requested ballots by Sunday, but numerous voters experienced delays with the post office and vendor leading up to the weekend.

“There is just a lot of work to do,” Salazar says Monday. “We can all point fingers all we want, but the fact is, no one failed to do anything. It’s overwhelming.”

At presstime a few hours before the close of polling, another 4,334 people had voted at the county’s convenience centers.

Asked to rate her level of confidence in election night returns for the county, she says, “It’s to be determined. We don’t know … There’s a high possibility that we might not be able to get them tabulated that night or even 10 hours after.”

Complicating factors such as write-in candidates and provisional ballots also come into play, she notes.

Voting before Election Day this year has already topped figures by about 44% for the same time period leading up to the 2016 primary, when just over 23,000 voted absentee statewide and more than 117,000 voted early. That year, in Republican and Democratic primaries that featured a contest for governor, among other races, more than 188,000 people cast votes during Tuesday polling.

On this year’s ballot, the top of the ticket for Santa Fe Democrats (who comprise the bulk of voters here) rests on a list of presidential contenders who have all ceded but one. It includes seven candidates vying for a Congressional seat that stretches into several other counties, as well as a handful of contested legislative seats, the county clerk and treasurer and seats on the County Commission and Public Regulation Commission.

“Everyone else is going home from their election night parties and my office—and my staff and the county clerks and their staff—are still working for several weeks after that to make sure all the numbers add up and every single vote is tallied and counted accordingly,” Toulouse Oliver said.

Unemployment Challenges Worforce Solutions asks some self-employed to return cash

A

s the New Mexico economy eased into reopening during the past week, a harsh reminder loomed: historic unemployment rates of nearly 13%.

Many have been struggling to get by during the past weeks and months as businesses have remained closed, and the state Department of Workforce Solutions is still scrambling to sort out the confusion caused by the department’s handling of a recent change to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

Last week, thousands of self-employed New Mexicans who received unemployment benefits under the PUA program learned that they must pay at least some of the money back to the government.

The problem stems from a discrepancy between the tax documents initially accepted by the state when it rolled out the program and federal guidelines released later, says Workforce Solutions Secretary Bill McCamley.

When New Mexico began accepting applications in late April, the state allowed applicants to submit either 2018 or 2019 tax returns to accommodate the IRS’ extension of tax day until July 15.

documents, McCamley tells SFR. The federal government gave everyone receiving benefits based on 2018 returns 21 days to file their taxes for 2019 and resubmit their PUA applications before states were required to reduce their weekly benefits to the minimum and notify them that they owed the government a repayment.

As of Monday, McCamley says, 2,907 applications were missing documents required by the federal rule change.

It’s a problem with a relatively easy fix; at any point, even after receiving notification that they owe money to the government, all a person has to do to have their debt erased and their benefits reinstated is submit their 2019 tax returns.

Workforce Solutions will even reimburse the person for the amount that was withheld in the meantime, albeit at the recalculated rate, says McCamley, though it may take the department a few weeks to process the case.

However, most people impacted by this change had no idea what the problem with their application was or how to fix it.

McCamley tells SFR his department sent text messages to all impacted individu-

als informing them of the change and the solution, but SFR has received no reports of any individuals who can confirm they received the texts.

Lauren Slaff, a culinary tour guide who received unemployment benefits under the PUA program and was later asked to return $1,752, says she called Workforce Solutions 50 times before she got through to an employee. That person, she says, could not adequately explain why she owed the money.

“The confusion and panic this has caused is just unacceptable,” says Slaff.

“Now I finally have learned enough to understand why this is happening, but I think the situation was very poorly handled.”

McCamely does not disagree. He issued a statement late Tuesday that reads, in part: “On behalf of the agency, I sincerely apologize that the notices caused concern and frustration at an already stressful time. essary to clear any pending issues or alleviate a hold on their claim.”

The difficulties of successfully applying for benefits, the hours-long wait times and numerous calls required to get through to a department employee show how utterly unprepared the system was for an economic impact such as that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, says Vince Gonzalez, a Santa Fe resident who has spent the last few weeks helping others sign up for benefits.

According to Workforce Solutions, 133,118 New Mexicans had received unemployment benefits through both traditional and emergency unemployment programs as of Thursday. In the national context, these numbers put New Mexico far ahead of most states.

McCamley says 89.7% of people who filed and are eligible to get benefits have been paid since March 15.

If that number sounds high, consider an independent report by worker advocacy group One Fair Wage in collaboration with the UC Berkeley Food Labor Research Center reported a lower rate: as of May 14, 72% of people who filed initial unemployment claims in New Mexico received benefit payments. Nationally, less than 60% of applicants have received benefits and in some states such as Florida and Hawaii, the number is as low as 32%.

Yet Gonzalez worries benefits are not be equitably distributed because of inequal access to the internet and cell service required to press for cased to go through. He also worries that the numbers are skewed by who is able to successfully complete an application and deemed eligible in the first place.

“The government has not put information together so that it’s easily accessible… people get frustrated and they give up,” he tells SFR. Gonzalez tells SFR that some of the people he has helped were deemed “ineligible” because their employers did not submit tax documents to Workforce Solutions on their behalf and for other reasons.

Prime Opportunity Is Amazon’s new Albuquerque warehouse good news? Probably not for its future workers

arring unforeseen circumstances (if such things exist anymore), come late 2021, Amazon will open a massive “fulfillment” center on Albuquerque’s west side and employ 1,000 people. According to the Albuquerque Journal, which reported the opening last week, Amazon says those employees will be paid $15 an hour and the center will use robots to help fill orders.

From a certain perspective, this might constitute good news: 1,000 new jobs announced in the midst of massive pandemic-inspired unemployment and robots to help bear the brunt of backbreaking work.

That perspective, though, requires ignoring Amazon’s shoddy reputation when it comes to warehouse employees, whose lots have only worsened since the pandemic, and the company’s use of technology to pressure and spy on its workers.

Last November, I interviewed Beth Gutelius, a Santa Fe resident and associate director of the Center for Urban Economic Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, after she co-authored an ex-

tensive academic report on the future of warehouse work, which disclosed, among other findings, Amazon’s propensity for using technology to surveil and isolate employees.

“We think of robots and technology as being able to make workers’ jobs easier,” Gutelius said to me in an interview last week. “Instead we found that it was having the opposite effect.” Many of these technologies, she notes, “do have the potential to make workers’ jobs better” by eliminating repetitive motions, for instance.

But warehouse employers are instead deploying them to speed up workers’ tasks through surveillance, tracking, “nudging” and sometimes “disciplining” them, all via automation. “This is happening across the warehousing sector,” she says, and “Amazon is the front edge of that spear; it’s doing the most experimentation, it’s pushing most at the limits of the human body.”

A February 2018 Atlantic magazine article about Amazon’s expansion into San Bernardino, California quoted one Amazon employee, in describing the pressurized environment: “They make it like the Hunger Games…That’s what we actually call it.”

Those conditions have led to notable worker safety issues. A 2019 Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting investigation found the rates of injuries at Amazon warehouses were more than double the national average for the general warehousing industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the stakes, with employees holding walkouts over unsafe conditions, and everyone from activist groups to US senators criticizing the company for its treatment of employees and whistleblowers. The pandemic also brought, Gutelius says, an often-invisible workforce “out of the shadows.” So-called essential workers became designated as such “because we’re now relying on them and they’re being asked to sacrifice or risk their own health and that of their families and communities so the rest of us can stay home.”

Back to the new Amazon warehouse slated for Albuquerque.

Advocacy group OLÉ member Jeanne Van Amburg says “the main concern is that Amazon is going to come in and not provide [employees] sick pay, hazard pay and protective equipment, proper protection for all of its employees that they are going to be hiring.” Concern in general about essential employees when the pandemic hit prompted Van Amburg, a health care worker herself, to become involved with OLÉ in the first place. “We want people to stay in to prevent the spread of this, but not everyone is lucky enough to have sick pay and hazard pay or even something so simple as a mask.”

Both Gutelius and Van Amburg discussed the need for employees to not fear retaliation when they speak out against unsafe working conditions, as has been documented at Amazon. “That is a common fear for people everywhere,” Van Amburg says, “this retaliation, this fear of not being able to provide for themselves or their family.”

I asked Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham any concerns she might have, during last week’s COVID-19 press conference, related to Amazon employee safety. “No employer, new or old, can be in a position to not adequately protect the public or workers,” Lujan Grisham said, pointing toward the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a resource for workers.

While Amazon’s media library features photos of masked workers in a COVID-19 safe environment, the company has been roundly criticized for its employee safety protocol during the pandemic.

“I have to respectfully disagree with the governor,” Gutelius says. “OSHA is a massively underfunded institution…they don’t have enough inspectors and the penalties that OSHA is able to levy on bad actors are most of the time so inconsequential to those businesses that they don’t actually deter bad behavior.”

Ideally, Van Amburg and Gutelius say, local government would mandate protections for Amazon’s New Mexico workers before the company arrives.

But workers’ fates don’t lie solely in the hands of government. The “state of suspension” COVID-19 has created does provide consumers, at least, some options going forward. “I think we have to be very discriminate about what lands again,” Gutelius says. “And one of the things we should question is, ‘Who are we here for?’ Are we showing up for [Amazon owner and New Mexico native] Jeff Bezos, or are we showing up for nurses and warehouse workers and grocery store workers?

We can’t change everything…but we can make some decisions about how we spend our money and what we’re supporting.”

The Pen is Mighty Are we leaving writers out of conversations about supporting artists?

hile we’ve all been busy posting to social media about supporting artists in the time of COVID-19, and maybe even buying a piece or two if we’re lucky enough to still be working, we’re leaving a very important factor out of the mix.

I’m guilty of it, too, but the fact is—we aren’t thinking about writers. At least not with the same level of regularity as other artists.

I’m also guilty of stealing this topic, or at least taking inspiration from a Facebook post by former SFR food columnist Michael J Wilson, who opined online, “It’s not just musicians and visual artists…”

Indeed, as sites like bandcamp.com began waiving revenue shares once a month for its musicians, and visual arts organizations both local and national launched well-publicized grants for struggling artists, freelance writers and novelists, poets and zine creators took a dive alongside them—but with very little by way of resources and even as some who work day jobs at home (don’t even get me started on the whole writing’s validity as a single source of income conversation) manage to scrape by .

“There are two aspects to this,” says author, educator and publisher James Reich, whose Stalking Horse Press has put out Reich’s works, Wilson’s poems and tomes by wordsmiths such as Duncan B Barlow and Quintan Ana Wikswo. “On the one hand, the loss of in-person readings, book launch events, salons, conferences, etc. absents a profound human quality in the way literature is shared and enjoyed; on the other hand, to be fair, most writers of fiction or poetry aren’t using their art as a source of weekly gig income, so I’m reluctant to make a special case for writers as a general matter of economics.”

resents a shocking amount of time and labor—from the actual writing to the workshopping, editing, production and promo of the thing. But, he continues, it isn’t as if scribes are conducting a dozen live readings per month to make rent as Santa Fe musicians often do. One of his biggest concerns at the moment, however, is in what happens next as opposed to right now.

“It remains to be seen what allowances publishers are willing to make for new authors whose books will naturally stall somewhat during these times,” Reich laments. “The large presses are already risk-averse. Aesthetically, I imagine them becoming still more cautious, impoverishing the art.”

Reich says he’s lucky Stalking Horse didn’t have any titles launching over the spring (he’s looking for next year’s projects now, though). Stalking Horse did publish an anthology called Dreams of Montezuma featuring students from the New Mexico School for the Arts, where

Reich is chair of creative writing and literature. In any case, Reich is ultimately not out to make an impassioned plea for the future of writing as a career: The pandemic, he notes, has put certain things into perspective.

“Environmentally, artistically, psychologically, this should be something of a period of introspection,” he tells SFR. “There are problems in literature like everything else, and I wouldn’t be at all sad to see some of it go the way of all flesh: if there was never to be another literary panel at the AWP [Association of Writers and Writing Programs] conference, I don’t think literature would suffer at all; quite the contrary.”

We Were Witches author Ariel Gore has noticed the shift as well.

“The pandemic has certainly traced the economics of the books I’ve had come out this year,” she says. “We joked at the launch of Santa Fe Noir at Collected Works [Bookstore and Coffeehouse] that it was ‘the last public gathering,’ and that turned out to be somewhat true.”

Gore compiled the collection of locally writ noir tales, which indeed dropped at the outset of national stay-at-home orders. The timing could not have been worse for the book, even as our lit critic Molly Boyle said it was “a pleasure to discover how different imaginations can channel the chiaroscuro energy of well-known places.”

Gore says she doesn’t believe writers should try to horn in on the artistic spotlight or make visual artists and musicians feel guilty for getting by. The arts, she says, are one of the few things keeping us going right now.

“Artists, including writers, are getting us through these scary times and helping us all find ways to embrace the new paradigm we’re entering, helping us

imagine how we do and don’t want to live into the future, helping us all think about ways we can decenter capitalism in our lives,” she says. “Let’s all support each other with whatever resources we have.

Not take the money from visual artists and give it to writers, but rather abandon the corporate money-suckers who have us convinced it’s more ‘convenient’ to send all our resources to Jeff Bezos whose business model, incidentally, had crushed the economical viability of being an everyday working author long before the pandemic had a chance to.”

And there it is.

Times are tough, no question, but not newly so for authors. Everyone interviewed for this story, in fact, noted that things were not so different for writers.

One could call them students of the human condition, and they’re doing what they can on the page and in their lives.

Gore, for example, offered refunds to students who signed up for her writing workshops pre-pandemic—another hit in an already dismal world of words; but, she says, she’s also opening her eyes to certain positives.

“All of us have a really different quality of time, and it’s making more room for meandering storytelling as opposed to just Tweets and soundbites,” she explains. “I think a lot of us are dialing back and taking some time we’ve long-missed to just hear a good story in the same way that a lot of us are finding the time and the rhythm to grow a garden.”

Writer Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, whose story “The Homeless Detective” appears in Gore’s Santa Fe Noir, says he’s doing pretty OK during the pandemic, but he also has a regular day job as a communications fellow with the Washington, DC nonprofit Community Change.

Wellington has also worked as a journalist, a novelist, a graphic novel writer and in a freelance capacity for years.

“It’s a very troubling time,” Wellington tells SFR. “Most writers are more like writers-slash-teachers, which can still result in a loss of income when you’ve got teachers with fewer hours or who have been cut.”

Still, he says, there have been resources available for writers, like the Pen America Emergency Fund (which has been temporarily depleted due to COVID-19 after reportedly granting monies to 10 times its normal number of writers) or the Creative Capital Arts Writers Grant, which, at the time of this writing, is still endowed through the Andy Warhol Foundation. On a local level, the Santa Fe Arts and Culture Department’s Culture Connects Coalition Artist Relief Fund grant, which should be entering

its third round of accepting applications soon, is open to writers. Despite that, Wellington notes, the real underlying issue is that working as a writer has not, in most cases, been a viable career path for decades.

National magazines, for example, pay very little, according to Wellington; years ago, he could make a living freelancing— and he did—today, however, he says he could easily rattle off a long list of wellknown publications who have official policies about paying hired guns as little as possible.

“I would say if [a publication] has the resources to pay for writing, they should pay for them,” he notes, “but that’s why so many writers do other things.”

Still, his day-to-day is largely unchanged.

“As many have pointed out, writing is pretty much at-home work anyway,” Wellington says. “People are all different, but in terms of time, there’s a quote I’ve always liked, and I can’t remember who said it, but they said ‘Writers are lower-class economically, but they’re the aristocrats of time.’ I’m privileged in that respect, but that’s the nature of the job.”

San Antonio-based writer Sam Bee, who recently released his first book Boom City through Anti-Oedipus Press, says his life hasn’t changed much, either, but that doesn’t mean he often feels supported.

“I think writers are largely left out of the conversation when discussing the support of artists,” he tells SFR. “But I am fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to work from home. I feel very blessed to be in that position. I also feel guilty. A lot of my friends and family have had to file for unemployment and loans.”

Like Wellington, Bee works a day job, but more importantly sees this time as both a creative catalyst for writers, and as an opportunity for would-be readers.

“Right now is a time when everyone is having to think more creatively,” he says.

“I support that evolution.”

So is there an answer? The sad truth is that we weren’t effectively supporting writers before COVID-19, and even as we ravenously consume their efforts now, we’re probably going about it all wrong.

It’s time to find and support local publishers and Patreons. It’s time to delve back into poetry and fiction—if nothing more, than for a brief respite from the trash fire our country has become.

“I encourage people to read for the calmness and the reflection,” Wellington adds. “I’m sure there are people who are going to want to write stories and novels after this…sometimes literature can help you understand things a lot better.”

hough Nick Peña conceived of Food Tour New Mexico ages ago, he made it a reality in 2011.

The company’s core premise is simple: One of Peña’s guides takes visiting or local diners to various restaurants in Santa Fe and/or Albuquerque for special menu items. The idea is that food tourists can get a little bit of a lot of types of food while learning city and restaurant history from a local—win/win. SFR even took the tour a couple years back and had a grand time with a knowledgable guide named Carlos.

And because Peña’s been working so closely with restaurants for so many years (and also worked for a time as the food editor at Albuquerque The Magazine), he seemed as good a person as any to ask about the future of dining, particularly during a week wherein Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has allowed restaurants to reopen so long as they limit capacity.

For Peña, the fallout of the pandemic came at the tail-end of a particularly prosperous time.

“Y’know, we were completely growing and increasing in ticket sales and revenue and, ironically enough, the winter months, which are typically very slow for Santa Fe, were some of our busiest on record,” he says. “I was excited coming into the spring because we were off to an amazing start.”

But as COVID-19 barreled across the land, Peña’s business came to a screeching halt. He was forced to lay off all four of his guides and take out loans (not PPP) to pay bills and marketing contracts that were still in play despite the pandemic.

“If I can only have a fraction of the guests on my tour, I don’t know if I’ll make it, and if some of the places in downtown Santa Fe are having to operate at 25% capacity, are they?” he says. “They’re doing the patio thing, they’re starting to do the indoor dining, and my hope is we’re going to find that it works and things will progress, but I also think a lot of things are going to change. MOVIES Tommaso Review Willem Dafoe deftly hits middle age in otherwise middling pseduo auto-bio

Try Googling filmmaker Abel Ferrara, and you’ll get links to movies like Bad Lieutenant and King of New York (plus a lot about documentaries and shorts, too). He’s kind of known for a certain, shall we say, intense and gritty tone, which would make his newest, the mostly reflective Tommaso, what people call a departure.

The always spectacular Willem Dafoe (who was robbed by not getting that Oscar for The Lighthouse) stars as the titular Tommaso, an older American gent with a much younger wife and a toddler (played by Ferrara’s real life family Cristina Chiriac and Anna Ferrara), all of whom live in Rome. Its opening act feels like an Italian version of the movie love letter to New York, with Tommaso sipping coffee in laughter-filled shops, boning up on his Italian with a private tutor (Dafoe’s Italian is surprisingly great) and attending welcoming AA meetings with very interesting people who seem to hang on his every word. But hidden within that seeming domestic and geographic bliss are Tommaso’s fear of hasbeen-ness, impending age, a wife and daughter who barely seem to acknowledge his existence and any number of fantasy situations bubbling up in his subconscious as he works on his new

+ THESE ACTORS ARE GREAT DESPITE THE BAD MATERIAL - IT’S JUST PLAIN PRETTY BAD

Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani are both national treasures, HBO series alums and very funny people—but knowing that makes the wildly unfunny new film from Michael Showalter (The State, Wet Hot American Summer) all the more disappointing.

Rae and Nanjiani are Leilani and Jibran, a couple nearly half a decade into a stalling relationship. She wants spontaneity, he wants…I dunno, for her to be more careful about spouting facts (it’s dumb).

Together, they wind up hitting some dude with their car in the middle of their breakup and then they witness his murder at the hands of some mysterious baddie. This kicks off a series of events that should be familiar to anyone who saw 2010’s also not-that-good Date Night with Steve Carrell and Tina Fey and/or Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (though The Lovebirds‘ lampooning of the latter film is neither topical nor sensical nor funny)—and it’s pretty much boring from then on out.

screenplay for some kind of comeback.

Tommaso is, seemingly, a loosely-based bit of Ferrara’s actual fears coming to life onscreen, a vulnerable display that feels like a cinematic stroke of brilliance and openness until one realizes it’s rooted in a self-indulgent assumption that aging white men who feel things about movies are sooooo interesting (I am aware of the irony in writing that sentence in a film review).

Dafoe is natural as ever, and it’s hard not to feel for him when his AA buds make eye contact while his wife doesn’t. But whereas Almodóvar’s culling from his own life for broader themes based in experience often borders the sublimely relatable in films like Pain & Glory, Ferrara’s take feels like a midlife crisis in film form, only

they didn’t commit, the pair sets out to solve the crime on their own, never knowing the police don’t actually blame them. They wind up at weird cult orgies, interrogating frat boys, making semi-humorous observations about the world around them and bringing up plot points that never get resolved. Even worse, the film approaches themes of institutional racism only to back off before its points land, leaving pretty much no thing outside of the opportunity for film critics to note how similar The Lovebirds feels to Nanjiani’s last film, Stuber (about a neurotic guy who gets swept up in crime stuff and says “funny” things).

Flashes of chemistry make way for halfbaked physical comedy routines that simply aren’t that funny and, despite a running time under 90 minutes, the story grows stale before it concludes with something about how bad relationships might just need the jumpstart of crime.

It’s honestly pretty lucky this movie hit Netflix amid the pandemic as opposed to its planned theatrical release. This way people might actually see it when they’re done with Avatar: The Last Airbender. (Alex De Vore)

without any real learning. This deflates some of the suspense he builds otherwise, and it certainly doesn’t make us empathize with Tommaso. But then, maybe we’re not meant to. Maybe he’s actually supposed to be a sort of cautionary tale.

Either way, Ferrara shot the thing himself with almost no budget in and around his own Roman home, and guerrilla-style filmmaking and expert cinematography make Tommaso a mostly worthy entry for his resume. Just ask yourself—do you like character studies?

THE WRONG MISSY

+ SPADE’S ALRIGHT—DEAL WITH IT - SWARDSON, SCHNEIDER, LAPKUS’ FORCED “WEIRDNESS”

Being Adam Sandler’s buddy must feel a little like winning the lottery. All folks like David Spade, Rob Schneider and Nick Swardson have to do is show up, spout wildly unfunny lines from whatever hastily written script satisfies Sandler’s end of his Netflix deal and boom—still famous.

In Sandler’s newest foray, The Wrong Missy, we find Spade as Tim, a Portland corporate guy on the receiving end of a horrible date with a free-spirit-type called Missy (Lauren Lapkus). She’s weird, y’know? Which is hard for assholes. Months later, though, Tim meets the woman of his dreams with the same name, but a case of mistaken text identity becomes a disastrous corporate retreat when he invites the wrong Missy to Hawaii with him for the most important business something-something of his life.

Spade does what he can (people forget he’s not a half bad actor) as Lapkus’ “eccentric” Missy gives out psychic readings, hypnotizes bosses and throws herself from a cliff into the sea. The usual cadre

of Sandler homies (the aforementioned Schneider and Swardson) pop up to say gross misogynist things or engage in the faint hint of physical comedy. Sadly, though, the bulk of The Wrong Missy feels like the most formulaic extended ’90s sitcom episode ever: “But if you’re here…and I’m here—who’s watching my drunk boss?!”

Even worse, the delightful Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) is trotted out as Tim’s ex-wife, given a couple jerk-ish lines and then relegated to the background. We could’ve lost Swardson in exchange for Chalke’s spot-on comic timing and sensibilities easily; her simply farting on a snare drum would’ve been better. And funnier.

Of course, it’s hard to blame Sandler and crew for setting the film in Hawaii. The Sandman’s affinity for the state has been clear since 50 First Dates, and if we had Netflix sending us to pretty places for work, we’d probably feel differently. Still, it plays no real purpose outside of a very weird shark sequence that pretty much seems like it was added to justify the location.

But then, it’s not supposed to be good, is it? It just is. The Wrong Missy isn’t really supposed to be anything, in fact. As far as mid-quarantine programming goes, it’s a CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Every so often an original take hits the zombie genre, but it’s important to never get one’s hopes up. 2017’s The Cured, for example, found zombies getting cured but living with the memories of their zombie actions—a fantastic idea that wound up producing a tragically boring movie. In the newly released Blood Quantum, however, writer/director Jeff Barnaby’s vision of a world wherein Indigenous Canadians are immune to a zombie virus ravaging white folks, we get something we’ve never seen before, plus some of the coolest practical and gore effects in a movie ever—and an almost entirely Indigenous cast.

On the Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, sheriff Traylor (Michael Greyeyes) finds himself in the midst of a very bad day. His sons are arrested and his ex (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) is none too pleased; dead salmon are flopping back to life and his cousin’s wife just ate her newborn. Within six months, surviving tribal members have built up a small but relatively safe shelter, but with zombified white people shambling and sprinting across the bridge, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll have to leave in search of something more tenable. To make matters worse, his teenage son Joseph (Indian Horse star Forrest Goodluck) has an impregnated girlfriend (Olivia Scriven of Degrassi) and his other son Lysol (Kiowa

Blood Quantum brings something new to the zombie movie formula.

Gordon) has some controversial ideas about who gets to live or die.

Outside of the totally bitchin’ premise and the totally bitchin’ grandpa (Stonehorse Lone Goeman) who fights with a sword instead of guns, Blood Quantum does suffer from some middling support performances. Its core cast, however, finds common ground between action thrills and emotional nuance. Goodluck in particular brings a noteworthy turn, and Gordon similarly impresses with calculated evil dressed up as concern. Greyeyes wows as well, sometimes hysterically funny amidst so much carnage and death, sometimes a caring father faced with tough decisions.

As for the not-so-subtle subtext, it’s notable that characters still try to do right by the very colonizers destroying their lives with illness. We all know (or should know) at least some of the history surrounding the awful ways Native folks in this country have been treated. So we root steadfast for the non-zombies right up to the harrowing final moments of this exciting film. (ADV)

HOW TO BUILD A GIRL

+ THE MUSIC - DISJOINTED; SILLY; THE FAUX BRITISH ACCENT

Beanie Feldstein proved quite the capable actor in last year’s Book Smart, but maintains only some of that magic in How to Build a Girl, the film version of Caitlin Moran’s novel of the same name. Moran tackles the screenplay here as well and, like the book, bases the events of the film loosely on her own life as a 1990-something teenage rock critic for some alt.weekly rag in England.

Feldstein is Johanna, a precocious if painfully shy 16-year-old who longs to be cool, have sex, write for a living. Using a combination of moxie, hallucinations and sheer force of will, Johanna lands her dream job and must navigate snobby culture journos, a never-been musician father hellbent on her helping him make it, up-and-coming bands and a brief but tempestuous crush on some superstar singer (Game of Thrones alum Alfie Allen) who’s far too old for her, but that’s OK, maybe? Definitely not, but the film wants us to believe it will be one day in the not-too-distant future.

Girl starts strong with minor character turns from the likes of Michael Sheen and Sue Perkins, but quickly changes course to a dark-adjacent tale about staying true to oneself. Feldstein, meanwhile, transforms from lovably dorky into snarkily cruel so quickly; speeches are made about meaning what one writes, but someplace along the way she loses the thread. This hurts her family and her new friends, but she’s all about making that paper (both news and money wise) and boning as many dudes as possible (which we have no problem with except she describes it in great detail to her irritated gay brother, played by Laurie Kynaston, about the only character here who approaches anything close to authentic).

Conflict arises, Johanna learns lessons, a surprisingly kickass soundtrack plays in the background and everything winds up right where you assumed it might. Where things get confusing is in whether this film was attended for the YA set or people who’ve lived long enough to find the whole thing silly. Either way, it’s not going down as one of Feldstein’s greatest hits. In fact, we’ll probably forget it (and her atrocious stab at a British accent) right around the end of…this sentence. (ADV)
