Recently a worker at the Albertsons on St. Francis in Santa Fe tested positive for COVID-19. On April 12, over 1500 grocery workers had already tested positive nationally; over 40 had died. Despite efforts to reduce the number of shoppers in stores, social distancing is inevitably compromised. In a United Food and Grocery Worker poll of 5000 workers, 85% had seen distancing guidelines violated. A Walmart manager told me, “30% of the people come in without masks—sometimes, the same person three or four times a day.”

Antony Fauci has stated that “between 25% and 50% of people may be asymptomatic carriers” of COVID-19. Data shows that masks, even cloth masks, protect the wearer from COVID-19 droplets and prevent the mask-wearer from infecting others. The Center for Disease Control now advises wearing masks in public. We need to look at this research and the data, particularly from abroad, and require New Mexicans to wear masks in grocery stores and other places of essential services.

At the end of March, Austria required grocery store shoppers to wear masks.

Austria’s daily rise in positive cases dropped dramatically. On March 28, 1001 new cases were reported; on April 26, 58 new cases. Now, as they reopen the country, shoppers are still required to wear masks in grocery stores and on public transit. South Korea provided masks to all citizens, part of a strategy that checked the transmission rate of COVID-19.

A preliminary report from the CDC earlier in April showed over 9,000 health care workers had been infected with COVID-19, the majority women in their 40s. Over 60 nurses have died from COVID-19. We must, despite pressure to reopen businesses, pro-

I agree that this is a very safe way to protect ourselves. Our personal protection is our responsibility. During this pandemic, I see a good and important aspect of a tragic situation. People are noticing the good things that people are doing to help others even though some of these everyday activites occurred right along.

I’m speaking about health care workers, grocers, truck drivers, etc. This is wonderful, but what about the postal workers? I wonder what we would do without the ability to pay bills, to recieve corrrespondence, etc. I plan to place a sign in my yard about my appreciation to this fine group of people. I challenge you all to show your feelings as well.

But, I believe you were only wearing your film critic hat while watching Planet of the Humans. From your review and your rating it seems like you accepted everything that the film offered.

I would like to inform you that there are a number of articles disputing portions of the film, particularly the wind and solar sections.

Much of the “information” about solar and wind power is based on climate denier arguments circa 2010.

It is water hungry and has a tap root in the water table probably. In Texas where they have removed the “cedar” trees, the springs are running again.

The juniper is producing oxygen but at this altitude we are used to less anyway. Aren’t we in a high desert? We could get used to less green in our landscape and certainly we would find that we have more water “under” us. Keep up the good journalism, Leah.

Local online business grows as parents look to entertain, educate their kids

Aisha Loeks hand-makes her costumes as part of her online business virtually visiting with children as princesses, villains and superheroes.

isha Maria Loeks slips easily into the Ice Princess get-up: red wig, drawn-on freckles and a silky green gown. She waves at identical 5-year-old twins through a computer screen. The youngsters, Remi and Roux, wear silver dresses reminiscent of Elsa in the Disney movie Frozen. Loeks’ look is inspired by Elsa’s sister, Anna.

In the course of a 15-minute call, Loeks, 31, plays games with the girls and tells stories inspired by the blockbuster animation. Remi and Roux can hardly sit still as their parents join in off-screen.

The girls are ecstatic.

At the end of the visit, Loeks, a born and raised Santa Fean, briefly brings the subject back to a mixed reality for the

kids: somewhere between the Enchanted Forest and New Mexico’s stay-at-home orders because of COVID-19.

“And also, girls, I want to remind you I miss my sister very much and all my princess friends because I’m staying safe in my castle,” Loeks says. “Are you girls also staying safe and missing your friends and playing with your family and washing your hands?”

They are, as are many others. That includes Loeks, who successfully transitioned her business, A Dash of Magic Events, online after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s stay-at-home order took effect in March. She majored in costume design and musical theater at the College of Santa Fe, although she started making princess dresses in high school as part of her sewing class. She was in the last graduating class before the

college closed and became the Santa Fe University of Art & Design.

Normally, she would dress in her handmade costumes and attend birthday parties or visit sick children in the hospital through her charity, which goes by the same name.

But now, Zoom calls are her medium of communication. And in an odd twist, Loeks says her two-year-old business has actually “gone up” since the arrival of COVID-19, as parents look for ways to keep their children entertained and positive through monotonous days.

Taking her business online came from both wanting to save her income and cheer up children stuck at home away from grandparents and friends. Her husband, a professional photographer, helps her create excellent photos for her online presence.

“Kids are really bummed and are staying inside,” Loeks tells SFR. “They need something to look forward to. I’m finding that many, many parents are really excited about doing it because it’s a special treat for their kid. I talk about COVID on the call too unless the mom specifically requests that I don’t.”

A 15-minute, one-on-one session like the ones Loeks does frequently with Remi and Roux are part of the COVID pricing: a suggested sliding scale of $15 to $35.

Loeks also launched a group online story time several times a week with a different character for each reading. Multiple families can sign up with a sliding scale of $10 to $30. Each session comes with emailed activities for after the call.

Loeks also found a way to continue custom “parties” with private group sessions that are 25 to 30 minutes long.

Family members who can’t physically be together for a child’s birthday party can gather on Zoom. She also does pre-recorded, customizable birthday greetings as her different characters starting at $75.

A child can be nominated through her charity for a free online visit and all donations go toward upkeep of the elaborate costumes, which range from the Little Mermaid to Maleficent.

Reagan Lauritzen, Remi and Roux’s mother, first booked an online session with Loeks when the state went into lockdown. The calls were immediately a welcome reprieve for the twins from days of routine, unable to leave the house.

Lauritzen says the group calls for storytime that Loeks does every week help her daughters know “they’re not alone and that there are other kids in the same predicament.”

“I think mentioning washing the hands is always helpful, especially when it comes from your favorite princess character,” Lauritzen tells SFR. “It’s offered some fun in what has otherwise been an environment that they can’t escape…It’s offered them a change without them having to leave the house.”

Model Citizens Scientists join together to show the power of data in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic

W

hen Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Sara Del Valle gives public presentations on her work, she often shows a clip from the film Contagion, in which a new bat-born virus swiftly spreads from China to the rest of the world, swiftly and gruesomely killing many and crippling society while scientists race to curtail the spread and find a cure.

“I always tell people, ‘Hollywood almost got it right,’” says Del Valle, a deputy group leader and applied mathematician in LANL’s Information Systems and Modeling Group and part of the team modeling the COVID-19 pandemic. Where the film errs, she says, is in its portrayal of Dr. Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) as the sole epidemiologist investigating the outbreak.

“In reality,” Del Valle says, “there are hundreds of thousands of people working around the clock in trying to help mitigate the spread.”

For decades, scientists from across disciplines have been studying and modeling infectious diseases, providing crucial information for outbreaks such as H1N1, SARS and Ebola, as well as seasonal influenza. Del Valle gravitated to the field as an undergraduate when she discovered it served both her love of mathematics and her upbringing by pastor parents to perform public service. She has also developed epidemiological models for smallpox, anthrax and HIV.

In addition to her other research, LANL scientist Sara Del Valle has studied the efficacy of facemasks in preventing airborne infection and recommended wearing them for COVID-19 early.

To combat COVID-19, scientists have come together to provide policymakers models for everything from hospital surges to mortality rates to hidden outbreaks, using a variety of mathematical approaches and data sets, and sometimes drawing differing conclusions. New Mexico’s modeling team has taken a distinctly local approach, relying on local data to monitor the disproportionate impact on

the state’s most vulnerable citizens. Just last week, the New Mexico Department of Health unveiled a new website making their work more visible.

Indeed, the pandemic has put all these scientists’ work on display to the general public in unprecedented and sometimes misinterpreted ways, with discussions of transmission rates, mortality forecasts and peak dates dominating discourse ev-

erywhere from Facebook to the evening news.

For the scientists, their specialized work applying computational math to massive data sets has significant implications as government and health care leaders look to the models to make swift policy decisions. At the same time, the pandemic carries an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of science in civic life and a teachable moment about what the immediate and foreseeable future could look like for everyone.

Yet while the groundwork for modeling the COVID-19 pandemic was in place prior to the outbreak, even trained scientists admit they are in uncharted territory.

COVID-19’s high level of contagion, its silent transmission, delays in testing and the long timeline before a vaccine emerges have created an unexpected situation in which “our only move to protect lives and prevent catastrophic hospital surges” was to shut everything down, says Lauren Ancel Meyers, the Cooley Centennial Professor of Integrative Biology and Statistics & Data Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin and a member of the External Faculty and Scientific Advisory Board of the Santa Fe Institute.

A pioneer in the field of epidemic modeling, Meyers and her lab have provided several reports featured in the national press on peak death rates, hidden epidemics of the disease in US cities and social distancing efficacy, to name just a few.

“In my 20 years of modeling pandemics and modeling global viruses that spread across the globe and are very deadly, this was not among the scenarios people in my field and public health agencies had really considered,” she says.

6-WEEK FORECAST OF CONFIRMED CASES FOR NM BASED ON DATA AS OF 04/26/2020 The New Mexico modeling efforts have been incorporating this forecasting model from Los Alamos National Laboratory. Toward the end of September, 2019, just a few months before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meyers delivered the first in a two-part lecture, “Preventing the Next Pandemic,” to a packed crowd at the Lensic Performing Arts Center as part of Santa Fe Institute’s annual Stanislaw Ulam Memorial lecture.

Meyers’ interest in the topic of deadly outbreaks started in childhood when she devoured books on the topic and had nightmares “about the big one that was going to wipe out life on earth as we knew it.” She went on to train as a mathematical biologist at Harvard and Stanford universities, but “everything clicked into place,” she said, while she was a postdoc at SFI studying complex systems in

science and was invited to collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “I had the opportunity to use math and biology and complex systems thinking to solve really practical problems about how we could control emerging outbreaks. And ever since then that has been my professional charge: to build complex system models that help us understand how diseases are spreading and come up with better strategies for controlling them,” she said during the lecture.

Three major outbreaks stoked her childhood fears: the 2002/2003 SARS outbreak, H1N1 in 2009 and the Ebola epidemic in west Africa in 2014. Her research on the diseases has appeared in more than 100 published peer-reviewed articles and also in reporting by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post, to name a few. Then COVID-19 came along. Meyers first read about the virus emerging in Wuhan in January and, from that moment, “we’ve been working around the clock not only to track and understand the virus, but to build models that can support public health and city/state national leaders navigating how best to protect our populations from transmission,” she tells SFR during a telephone interview.

part of SFI’s Complexity Explorer course on pandemics, and Meyers also provided an introduction to the math behind the modeling during her lecture in Santa Fe. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced many to the concept of flattening the curve, a visual representation of the slowing of spread. The curve represents how swiftly the virus is spreading. A steep curve means it’s spreading quickly. The reproduction number, or R0 (pronounced R naught), is one key data point in disease modeling and expresses how many people one sick person can infect—how contagious an illness is (explained aptly

by Winslet’s character in Contagion). The effective rate of transmission measures what is actually happening in terms of person-to-person infection in specific communities.

As such, the transmission rate isn’t fixed. Social distancing measures aim to reduce the rate. New Mexico’s target for re-opening more of the economy is a 1.15 rate of transmission; the state’s most recent modeling report calculated an effective transmission rate here of 1.24 compared to 1.28 the week prior, where small changes of rates of transmission have huge impacts across large populations. The higher the rate of transmission, the more quickly cases double, what’s known as exponential growth. As it slows, the curve flattens.

While there are many different types of models and computations, the simplest— and perhaps the most well-known—is the SIR model, in which mathematical equations are used to model the flow of a virus through people in three states: susceptible, infected and recovered.

The math used to understand how a disease will march through a network of people derives from an area of statistical physics called percolation theory, first developed in the 1940s to model the flow of a liquid through material and determine, by considering the configuration of the material’s channels and the viscosity of the liquid, whether the liquid will permeate the material. “Disease transmission is similar,” Meyers explained in her lecture.

“The channels are the contacts between individuals or groups of individuals, the liquid is our disease and its viscosity is the transmissibility.”

Scientists began applying this type of math to disease modeling in 1983 and it grew in importance in the early 2000s, in part as a result of Meyers’ and her colleagues’ work and research conducted at SFI. tional approaches. These include the SIR model (which the state of New Mexico uses), agent-based models, as well as curve-fitting approaches such as Meyers’ lab used to model peak death in each US state using geolocation data from cellphones to determine the impact of social distancing. The much-referenced University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation models also uses a curve-fitting approach. Much of Meyers’ early work was focused on network modeling and using machine learning to improve outbreak detection, forecasting and control.

Whatever the approach, she tells SFR, every model is different, even ones in the same class.

“It’s not a competition,” she says.

“None of us believe that we have the one right model and that everyone else has the wrong model. All of these models have different expertise built into them, different data built into them and they complement each other and they each give us a different perspective on what might be happening and what might be to come.”

The CDC, she says, is taking an “ensemble” approach and asking all the modeling groups to provide their projections so they can be considered collectively to help guide decision making.

“There’s a diverse ecosystem of modeling approaches,” she says. “Even two models that have the same general style will have differences in the details.”

Those details have been important in New Mexico, where health officials have emphasized their modeling efforts as distinctly local. Up until last week, New Mexicans learned of those projections from Health and Human Services Secretary David Scrase during weekly livestreamed updates with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. On April 30, the health department unveiled a new modeling website, which it plans to update weekly (https://cvmodeling.nmhealth.org).

Jason Mitchell, chief medical and clinical transformation officer for Presbyterian Healthcare Service, leads the 25-person team modeling the pandemic for the state. For Mitchell, that effort began with questions directly impacting Presbyterian’s health facilities.

“We wanted to be able to be prepared for how many staff do we need, how many vents do we need, how many beds do we need, how much protection equipment?

It was an exercise in preparing our organization to make sure we could take care of New Mexico,” he says.

That effort became collaborative with Los Alamos and Sandia national labs along with health department epidemiologists, all of whom consult weekly to adjust projections. “[It] became a great collaborative effort to each share the data analytics we have and to validate those analytics with

one another and identify what’s going to happen in the next week, the next month, and over the next few months to a year,” Mitchell says. The process, he notes, “helped the governor make some really good policy decisions for the state and save a lot of lives.”

That might not have happened, he says, if the state hadn’t developed its own models.

“Obviously I look at a lot of the models,” Mitchell says, “Some of the models painted very rosy pictures early on… those models are more concerning because they wouldn’t encourage you to take action to prevent further spread.”

For example, the state’s April 28 epidemiological report discusses why the

much-touted University of Washington’s IHME model would have been less effective for New Mexico’s response to the pandemic. For one, it used historic death rates to infer hospitalization and ICU use. New Mexico health officials say the state’s low death rate creates problems in the IHME model, as does the latter’s lack of New Mexico-specific data. IHME doesn’t use real-time data or account for the state’s diverse population and it estimates, rather than calculates, the rate of effective transmission.

that in advance into our model and predict that so we can direct where action needs to be taken into the state. That’s a really important aspect of this model that no other models can offer you.”

The state anticipated, for example, the high levels of COVID-19 cases in the northwestern counties such as McKinley and San Juan. As of last week’s modeling report, pueblos and nursing homes in those northwest counties, along with Cibola County, continued to have growing COVID-19 cases—per capita four times that New Mexico health officials and hospital leaders rely on detailed regional data to of the state overall. make policy decisions.

The state focused its efforts there, he says, because “it’s really important to take care of populations that are vulnerable in this pandemic.”

“All the tribes have really worked hard and done a good job of taking care of the people and the fact they had an outbreak is not because they did anything wrong or different,” he says. “It’s because you have large families living in homes together [leading to] family spread… you have diabetes and other disease burdens. This is because of the demographics and population of the state.

I don’t want people to think anyone in the state has not done the right thing.”

“When you look nationally, you see this massive disparate impact on poor communities and communities of color,” Mitchell says. “We’ve been able to build

projections; adjusted population risk; along with data sets on social determinants of health and analytics from John’s Hopkins Adjusted Clinical Groups system. The system also uses information derived from Presbyterian’s health plan claims and clinical databases.

Projection models, by contrast, consider different assumptions and scenarios to compute potential outcomes. A common misperception by the public, scientists say, is trying to read such models like weather forecasts.

“If there’s a hurricane coming, you can move stuff out of the way of the hurricane,” says Samuel Scarpino, an assistant professor in the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University, “but as far as I know, we can’t move the hurricane yet, probably never will be able to…The whole point of the models was to influence the decisions and thus influence the epidemic trajectory. We are trying to intervene, meaning if we are right in the beginning, we can very likely look like we were wrong because the measures went into place and the epidemic changed trajectory.”

Saving lives drives all the models in the COVID-19 pandemic—their purpose is to help policy makers choose which actions will impact outcomes for the best: slower spread, fewer hospital surges, less death.

Needless to say, the pandemic has provided a teachable moment about disease modeling.

For instance, LANL has a forecasting model that calculates COVID-19’s trajectory using confirmed cases and deaths.

These types of models come closer to weather forecasting as they don’t use social distancing, transmission rates or any other type of assumption. Del Valle says LANL’s model has been made possible by the access to real-time data, often hard to come by for infectious disease modeling.

Del Valle, who is part of the state team, hopes to focus future modeling work on the role of age and underlying factors for COVID-19 patients. “I’m interested in having a really good forecasting model that incorporates social demographic and health factors so we can better forecast for hospitalizations,” she says.

A medical doctor, Mitchell also is certified in infomatics and sees data playing a crucial role in contemporary health care.

“I’m a family medicine doctor, I love the breadth, I love the impact we can have on the community level. Data analytics is how you understand where to focus and my passion stems from that desire to help large populations and invest in the tools to do so. That translates very well to a pandemic: By having the right data, you can save lots of lives.”

“Everything we can do to contribute to putting out accurate information that reflects our current best understanding and appropriately communicates the uncertainty or certainty is something that we just all have to do.”

The type of computer modeling at play, Scarpino says, represents a field that has developed dramatically in the last 20 years, in terms of expertise, as well as relationship-building between scientists and public health officials. But COVID-19’s scale has no contemporary precedent and its unknowns remain vast and significant.

In fact, all of the scientists interviewed were at pains to emphasize the importance of recognizing the pandemic as a fluctuating situation without scripted outcomes. Physics and turbulence drive the weather, Del Valle notes. Public policy and human behavior—less predictable factors, in other words—drive disease outbreaks.

“This is not a one and done thing,” Mitchell says of the peak—the height of cases. Models of past epidemics, such as Spanish flu and H1N1—show that future waves and future peaks will come as restrictions lift. On this point, all the models agree. “We don’t want to be sick and have mass casualties, and we don’t want to languish where no one can earn an income or get basic healthcare services,” he says. “Modeling becomes so imperative so we can have the best of both worlds.”

Gallery openings are (like everything else) on hiatus for a little while, and that’s ostensibly a sad thing—but opportunities for long-overdue innovation abound.

Galleries are moving their exhibits online for virtual viewings, so while you may no longer be able to rub elbows with the elite while enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres, the art is more accessible now than it ever has been to anyone, regardless of physical ability, social class or even place in time.

For example, Blue Rain Gallery’s (blueraingallery.com) exhibit, A Tribute to Oscar E. Berninghaus, features 13 gallery artists’ interpretations of the Taos modernist’s works. The virtual tour takes the form of a 30-minute video shot from the perspective of a gallery visitor and includes short clips of the artists discussing their process, providing the depth of a personal tour but on your own time (and on your own couch). Frankly, it’s a YouTube video, so even when the paintings come down on May 13, the tour will live on…line.

retty much every museum in Santa Fe has transitioned to a heavier online presence as the pandemic-spurred stay-at-home order continues. The New Mexico Museum of Art, for example, has embraced Instagram with virtually-curated exhibits; the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Art has worked within the Artsteps app to create three-dimensional renderings of their offerings.

For its part, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian already offered expanded content for numerous assets such as audio from curators and artists, including those represented in the recent Laughter and Resilience: Humor in Native American Art exhibit. Hanley also says to expect a series of video interviews with artists, but with a twist.

“We’re premiering it [this week], and it’s a little bit different because we were trying to figure out ways to connect, and you’ve been seeing this a lot where people conduct artist interviews through Zoom,” she says. “So we were working with Steven J Yazzie from the Laughter & Resilience show who said, ‘I want my kids to interview me.’ I provided some questions and they worked on them a little bit and interviewed their dad.

It’s so sweet. We’re trying to reach people in a different way and with something that maybe makes them smile and teaches them about the exhibit in a way that isn’t a straightforward interview.”

Beyond that, Hanley and her team are continuing to brainstorm. The next big project is the development of resources meant for teachers to go along with the Guide By Cell content.

Hanley says they’ve developed certain aspects already, but they’re currently figuring out how to craft slightly longer curricula for the online classroom.

“The idea is that we connect with schools and kids and parents, because we want to be able to engage with our folks, but also to entertain people,” she says.

“I’m hoping it will be successful in that way, and the staff is really creative and particularly engaged right now at looking into ways we can be helpful to our community. Especially as a Navajo person, I understand lack of connectivity, but I know that people have their phones.

Being able to use that instead of downloading apps—people calling something, texting something instead—it’s important. And hopefully it’s inspiring.”

things, but the whole thing about cooking is smelling, touching and tasting, and with the loss of that, I don’t know how we’ll create the same experience.

Il Piatto’s Matt Yohalem on the past, present and future of the restaurant industry

C

hef Matt Yohalem opened his Marcy Street restaurant Il Piatto in 1996, and he’s weathered storms before. But when COVID-19 hit, Yohalem took a step back, temporarily shuttering his Italian eatery and going into preservation mode. We caught up with the longtime culinary staple to get his take on the restaurant biz as we head into more days of social distancing and closed dining rooms.

SFR: You made the choice to close temporarily. Is this still the plan?

Matt Yohalem: I didn’t really make the choice. Between the virus and the regulations, I didn’t really have the option. I’m a dine-in restaurant, and dinein is not conducive to social distancing.

I’m monitoring continuously all over the world, though, because one thing about this industry is, it’s global, and it encompasses every society and what brings people together. It’s such a fundamental factor of how we live, and this virus has put us in a territory we’ve never been in before. There are restaurants in Paris that have been open for 500 years. They kept them open during Nazi occupation…they’ve thrived for hundreds of years no matter what’s happening, but with something so dramatic, we don’t really have the choice.

Was delivery or takeout ever an option?

We could do food to go, but you’re squishing beautiful food in a box. There’s

a place for it and there are businesses that thrive with it, like pizza or Chinese, but for us, even when times are great, if we’re talking Uber Eats or Grubhub, that’s a 30% commission they want, plus the containers cost money, you don’t know what happens to your food next— and we’re not making 30%. I will say if I did, I’d use Dashing Delivery. They run an immaculate business. I don’t know what I’ll do at this point, though.

So would you say you’re worried?

Of course. I’m totally worried, and I’ve got a lot of empathy and sympathy because so many people are in this industry. I don’t think people realize how many people restaurants support in the country, from the linen companies, the fish companies and the produce guys; the farmers markets—it spans out all the way to the importers of wine to the truck drivers who deliver it and the sommeliers. Restaurants become part of your identity. It’s not just a job, it’s a part of who you are.

Can you speak to some of the challenges you’re facing?

The restaurant model has become, over the years, so strained and tightened by all these different things, and the virus was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Well, it was more of a lead pipe, I should say. There’s a wage disparity there where we’re already making very thin margins, and the business model is one of crowds. It’s the opposite of social distancing. How do you bring people together? There’s a psychology that’s been introduced that’s now wary of close-up

Is there some ideal solution for helping restaurants get back to a good place? Maybe even just first steps?

Would government assistance be a good thing?

Yes, but not necessarily in the manner they’ve been doing it. What needs to happen involves big thinkers and maybe some regulatory things. We need help, but a few dollars isn’t going to fix it. And it should be grants, because lending money to failing business only gives them insurmountable debt if and when they can open back up. What we need is actual help. One idea I saw in New York City was that people might feel more

comfortable if they’re outdoors. They’re talking about shutting down major streets to allow the restaurants to occupy them like they do in Europe. We could do that here, maybe closing the Paseo [de Peralta] loop—OK, maybe not all of it—but if you had some parking lots on the edges and made it more for foot traffic…well, you don’t get tourists by giving them lots of parking tickets. And the liquor laws need to be changed. I am not for DWIs, but very few other states have laws where the cashier at Allsup’s is responsible for the person who drinks a bottle of something and gets on the freeway the wrong way. Plus, if that bar or restaurant can’t serve booze right now, that expensive liquor license is worth zero.

You’ve been a major proponent of locally sourced foods. Is that still going to be a doable factor after all this?

It’s going to be more of a doable factor.

One thing that COVID did was expose these weaknesses in the food supply system. If we buy locally and stop our reliance on huge manufacturers…look, food should be sourced from farms.

Restaurants used to have their own gardens, some still do, and there are so many sources to get this stuff. It’s less expensive, it’s more humane, it tastes better. It’s a no-lose.

How can regular people support restaurants right now?

I know the curbside thing is so appreciated by the restaurant community, and I have to compliment the whole Santa Fe community for so ardently patronizing these restaurants. I know there are some funds where people can donate money, like the New Mexico Restaurant Association [Serving NM Fund], but I don’t know I have a straight answer for you, because nobody knows what’s going to come up.

A Secret Love Review:

BEST MOVIE EVER

60+ years of love and a little bit of baseball

Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel spent more than 60 years pretending they were cousins.

Or incredibly close friends. Or that they lived together in Chicago after emigrating from Canada for safety’s sake. But after decades upon decades of their secret relationship, we join them in the time after they’ve finally announced to the world they’re queer, most definitely here— everyone was already pretty much used to it.

Writer/actor Chris Bolan turns documentarian to tell Donahue and Henschel’s story, one that weathered everything from hateful family, unfettered homophobia and government raids on queer nightclubs; Earth’s hatred of queer folks stretches across borders and as embarrassingly far back as the eye can see.

On the one hand, this makes A Secret Love feel triumphant—from the bravery of its subjects to the quick glimpses of those close to them who also lived in secret for more years than not. Their family, by comparison—mostly Donahue’s, as it’s explained nearly everyone who got close to Henschel died—feels decidedly less harrowing. Donahue’s doting niece, who struggles with

There’s a fine line between delusion and illusion. And both are part of the myth of a “clean energy” that magically lifts humanity from its crash course with the planet. That is the thesis of Planet of the Humans.

Move over, Al Gore. Henceforth, Earth Day belongs to Jeff Gibbs.

Gibbs directs and reports the documentary produced by Michael Moore and released on April 21. It’s free on YouTube for 30 days and is a must-watch.

Just as billions in federal aid have been dumped into “the economy” in recent weeks from COVID-19 stimulus and relief packages, the US has poured fountains of money over the elusive concept of better energy, and we’re not saving the planet as much as we’re flailing to save our standard of living.

Henschel’s secretive nature and tries to get the couple into an assisted living facility, takes up the most screen time, but others with strong feelings about how people should live pop up now and then as well to say something absurd.

Sadly, the most interesting elements, such as how both Donahue and Henschel played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (on which 1992’s A League of their Own was based), are mentioned all too briefly before making way for family “drama” that feels anything but uncommon. How many elderly folks fight against being homed in a day? How many tearful relatives make speeches about how they’re only trying to do what’s best?

Elsewhere, the filmmakers have access to a shocking yet appreciated amount of film

get primetime play. We’re still using fossil fuelbased infrastructure to build them. Plus, the same evil corporate overlords who run technological/industrial society (read: The Koch Brothers) run the strategy and profit bases that prop up the “green energy movement.”

The movie is an enjoyable if also gut-rotting indictment of Big Environment and some of its figureheads, including Vermonter Bill McKibben, and yes, Gore, in particular.

Catch candid interviews with other people you’ve never heard of who run solar farms, make policy and study science and human behavior. Just about everything with the word “green” in front of it takes a punch through this lens: biomass, biofuels, divestment/investments, natural gas and even giant mirrors in the California desert; “the takeover of the environmental movement by capitalism,” Gibbs says, “is complete.”

The planned release date couldn’t have anticipated how so many people would be feeling this day, and that while we’re under stay-at-home orders from a public health threat, we see how the deep scar of humans on the environment can heal in perceptible ways.

There is much to mourn. And we can change. But how? (JG)

Truly, they documented with enough regularity for a few riveting sequences, but around the billionth time we hear someone utter “We had to be very careful,” we start to long for more. Fact is, though nobody is excusing homophobia, these women did some amazing things and, other than the looming threat of being found out, built a life together.

That’s wonderful if not riveting stuff. Their eventual marriage is pretty great, though.

BAD EDUCATION

+ JACKMAN AND JANNEY; JOURNALISM

- POINTLESS SIDE CHARACTERS

It was one of the biggest scandals to hit a school in the history of, well, schools, but the early-aught embezzlement of the Long Island Roslyn school district mostly went forgotten until the newly released HBO movie Bad Education with Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney. And though the cable channel gussies things up in the name of drama and sexiness, its core tenets—a pair of trusted public servants who turned a less-than-stellar district into one of the top five in the nation while stealing millions—ring true and salacious enough that it’s hard to look away.

Beneath it all, Bad Education is a secret journalism film, or at least one that understands the power of the press. It was the school paper that broke the story of Frank Tassone (here played by Jackman) and Pam Gluckin (Janney) funneling taxpayer funds into beach homes and face lifts, nice cars and expensive suits; national outlets followed after. Director Cory Finley and screenwriter Mike Makowsky spirit the student journo character Rachel (Geraldine Viswanathan) into existence to help us along, but her low-stakes position at a student paper

turned high stakes pursuit of fact and truth is inspiring, even if she’s ultimately a broad amalgamation.

Jackman, meanwhile, hits highs as a teacher led astray by fears of aging and image. In tandem with Janney’s always remarkable skills, Bad Education sings. It’s almost hard to hate them for what they do, particularly as we’re constantly reminded that they got results, dammit! Ray Romano as school board president Bob Spicer makes sure we never forget it through real-life college admission stats and skyrocketing home prices in the school’s district, and there’s something about how neither Tassone nor Gluckin ever forgets a student or their interests that shows us they cared deeply once.

There’s a bit of teacher worship to be found as well, particularly through a stirring late-act speech wherein Jackman reminds us these people hold our hands and literally gift us with information through long hours and low pay— only to be forgotten by students climbing the ladder.

Of course, that’s no reason to steal from a school, nor does it excuse meandering subplots that could have been covered through dialogue.

Still, it’s the Jackman/Janney duo we came to see, and they do not disappoint in what’s otherwise a perfectly fine film. (ADV)
