hirley Montoya’s three grandchildren plan to continue learning online for the remaining five weeks of the school year, though not for lack of missing their teachers at Salazar Elementary.

“I’m hoping at the beginning of [next] year to go ahead and send them back to school. They do miss school, we all do miss school,” Montoya tells SFR. Rather than risk bringing the virus home—where vulnerable adults live with Montoya and her grandchildren—they’ve

English and Spanish—about reopening and safety measures taken by schools.

While the negative impact of the past year on their child’s education evenly concerns parents across racial and ethnic groups, fear of the coronavirus as schools reopen doesn’t affect all families equally.

A December CDC report concludes that families of color maintain more hesitancy about reopening schools than white, non-Hispanic parents.

SFR determined the rate of return for each school using attendance numbers from April 23 and looked for associations between these percentages and demographic information, including: racial and ethnic breakdown, percentages of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and an estimate of average family income using census data.

In an interview, Superintendent Veronica García concedes “there have been certain ZIP codes hit harder [by COVID]” and it comes as no surprise that low-income communities—where students often live in multigenerational and multi-family homes—have lower rates of return.

Despite an awareness of the pandemic’s disparate impact, the district did not target specific communities to encourage equitable returns to the classroom.

To identify these disparities, says James Lujan, chief equity, diversity and engagement officer, SFPS would need to track and study the data.

decided to wait until everyone in the house receives the COVID-19 vaccine.

With each family in Santa Fe schools making individual, calculated decisions whether to return or stay remote, the breakdown of who’s coming back points to familiar, troubling trends seen here and across the country.

Santa Fe schools serving populations with the largest number of white students and the lowest number of those who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch reported higher rates of in-person learning in the district. In some cases, these schools reported at least 20% more students back in the classroom than the average across the district, which was 46% as of April 23, when the district shared data with SFR. The proportion of students returning to in-person learning for schools serving wealthier parts of Santa Fe follow trends observed elsewhere in the nation.

Andel Trujillo, site coordinator with Communities in Schools at Salazar Elementary, tells SFR that the multi-faceted reasons families cite for remaining online vary. While no two situations sound alike, there remains lingering hesitancy in some families to send their children back into school buildings despite the measures taken by SFPS. “Each person is different, and they have their different reasons. Obviously some overlap—a lot of it is the health concerns,” Trujillo tells SFR. “Trusting within the system, too: knowing that the system hasn’t always been there to support certain families and so making sure they feel confident that they can send their kids to schools, that schools will take care of their kids.”

Trujillo and Communities in Schools have advocated for families to receive the vaccine. But “families are busy,” and he hasn’t reached all the parents in the school community. Trujillo explains this dissemination of knowledge entails “explaining the process of vaccination, reminding families regardless of immigration status or insurance you can get the vaccine, because that can be a hesitation for a lot of people as well.”

With communities of color experiencing more adverse economic and health consequences of the pandemic, these data indicate that Santa Fe is not exempt from educational inequalities exaggerated by the pandemic.

Robin Noble, principal of Kearny Elementary, tells SFR that “our community has been impacted by COVID and I know, not in high numbers, some of our families have lost several family members...particularly over the holidays when we had that big peak.” Noble acknowledges the demographics of the Kearny community—whose zone overlaps with some of the lowest income tracts in the city—might have contributed to their lower rate of return. Though feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive.

“There’s still a lot of fear around health issues and being vulnerable.

Just because the adults on campus are vaccinated, the children are not vaccinated yet,” Jule’ Skoglund, principal of Salazar Elementary tells SFR. “Our families might be a little more fearful because there isn’t as much opportunity and that makes people fearful. Just the opportunity to get vaccinated, opportunity to get informed about how to get vaccinated.”

The report points to “existing structural inequalities” in health care access and housing, among other factors, that place racial and ethnic minority communities at heightened risk for adverse outcomes from COVID-19. While parents weigh the benefits of in-person learning against the risk of the virus, the findings indicate that more vulnerable families, including socioeconomically disadvantaged families, err on the side of caution.

Most public elementary schools in Santa Fe have more students of color than white students, further highlighting the juxtaposition SFR found in the data.

Of schools with a racial makeup of 35% or more white students, each reported well over half of their pupils back in classrooms by April 9. Since then, as students continue to trickle in, that number of returning students went up from 65% to 72%.

Kathy Primm, president of the Carlos Gilbert Elementary parent teacher association, tells SFR that school leadership and staff have “gone above and beyond... to make the guidance from the district and Public Education Department a reality on the ground.” Additionally, weekly e-blasts to families factored into parents’ decisions to send their children back, Primm says.

On the other side of town, schools with 80% or more Latino students reported that less than half of their students chose to return. Not all these schools follow this trend—Cesar Chavez Elementary and Edward Ortiz Middle School had respectively 59% and 56% of their students show up to in-person learning last week.

Of the almost 12,000 students enrolled in SFPS, more than 70% qualify for free or reduced-price lunches—an indicator of relative income. For some schools in the district, their entire population qualifies for this benefit; of these 13 schools, all but five reported less than half of their students are back in classes.

By contrast, schools reporting the highest percentages of students returning to in-person classes serve populations where more than half of the families do not need help paying for lunch.

SFPS school zones don’t overlay exactly with census tracts SFR used to estimate the average family income of schools, but zones’ proximity to these tracts suggests that schools serving wealthier families had larger numbers of students returning to in-person learning. hen ecologist Craig Allen looks across the brown, grassy shrublands on the east flank of the Jemez Mountains in northern New Mexico, he feels no satisfaction that he was right.

Right that the world was warming.

Right that warming would spur such large, severe fires that the forest he studied for decades would disappear. And right that increasing temperatures here—and across the globe—have made it too warm for conifer trees to regain even a toehold across many of their old landscapes.

“It’s hard not to feel…well, it has felt like failure there,” says Allen, who recently retired from the US Geological Survey,

and has monitored landscape change in these mountains since he was a Ph.D. student in the late 1970s. “We saw the vulnerability. But we could not act substantively enough, quickly enough to deal with it.”

Across the Earth, people are watching the impacts of climate change play out in their homelands, the places they depend upon and love. From rising seas lapping at the shores and inundating coasts to the highest mountains, where snowpacks are dwindling and glaciers receding, we are reeling from how these changes affect every aspect of our lives. In all of this, there is room for grief. These changes are dangerous and disorienting. But building new relationships with the landscapes around us will allow us to survive—and give the other species we still share this planet with the chance to thrive.

Aside from a few exceptional years, the past two decades have been marked by warmer temperatures and a severe drought that have sucked up snow-

packs and streamflows around the US Southwest and northern Mexico. Hand in hand with other human interventions like fire suppression, drought and warming have made forests increasingly vulnerable to die-offs, insect outbreaks, and larger, more severe wildfires.

In the late 1980s, when NASA climate scientist James Hansen testified before the US Congress about the link between human-emitted greenhouse gases and warming, Allen says the impacts of climate change still seemed theoretical. But by the early 1990s, temperatures were clearly rising, and in 1998, he co-authored a paper with David Breshears looking at how climate change would produce large shifts in forests at “unprecedented rates.”

All too quickly, Allen and his colleagues watched this play out worldwide, including in the Jemez. In 1996, the Dome Fire burned over 16,000 acres of the Santa Fe National Forest and the adjoining Bandelier National Monument.

Then in 2000, a prescribed fire ran out of control in the area; the Cerro Grande Fire

burned 48,000 acres. Part of the problem in the Jemez, as with millions of acres of forests across the western United States, lies with a century of fire suppression. By not letting even naturally ignited fires burn, we allowed our forests to become overly dense and stuffed full of downed and dead trees that now more easily fuel bigger and more catastrophic wildfires.

But warming changed the whole dynamic.

“As soon as we started to go through multiyear drying, society no longer had the capacity to suppress those fires,” Allen says. “If you get an ignition on the wrong day, just forget it.”

That’s what happened when the 2011 Las Conchas Fire ripped through the Jemez with astonishing heat and unprecedented speed. No one had seen a fire like Las Conchas. And modelers still can’t get a grip on it.

Las Conchas ignited around 1 pm on a sunny Sunday in late June, shooting a huge, pyrocumulus cloud above the mountains. By 3 am, it had burned more

Desert streams are approachable subjects, especially compared to, say, a massive and murky system like the Mississippi River, says Bogan, now a professor at the University of Arizona’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment: “The entire world is shrunk down to the size of your living room. To understand why something is going on, why the species are there, or why they’re disappearing—you have a pretty good chance of figuring it out.”

For Bogan, studying those small systems over the past two decades has meant witnessing their decline.

When he first started visiting one of his research sites in southern Arizona, French Joe Canyon, he’d hear birds singing from the cottonwood trees as he approached. “It was so full of life all the time. I knew the invertebrates there, I knew the species,” he says. Now, it’s hard to go back. “Most of the time now, it’s dry. The birds are definitely not there, the aquatic species are not there,” he says. “And even when it does have water, it’s not the same species that were there beforehand.”

That sense of loss is magnified from knowing change isn’t just occurring at that one living room-sized place he happened to be paying attention to—but knowing that springs and streams are drying up across the entire region, the entire world.

“The scientist in me knows that stasis is a myth, right?” he says. Ten thousand years ago, for example, southern Arizona hosted a forest of Joshua trees, not saguaros. “There was almost no similarity to what you see today. So, the scientist in me knows that nothing is ever stable and

than 40,000 acres. In all, it devastated 156,000 acres.

In some places where the highest severity fires burned, aspen groves are replacing the scorched and root-ripped pines that have tipped and fallen. Some scattered pines do survive, but most are skeletons, creaking and whistling in the whipping wind. And within about 30,000 acres of the burn scar, there’s simply no

forest. A decade after the fire, it’s dusty.

And even in mid-April, the sun feels punishing. No longer a cool, moist conifer forest, this land is now wide open to the Rio Grande Valley below—and covered with tufts of deer-munched grasses, low prickly bushes and a smattering of scrubby Gambel oak.

“It hurts to see the loss of the forest in the Jemez,” says Allen. “There are always

winners and losers in change, right?” he says, repeating the mantra ecologists adhere to, that change is inherent in all ecosystems at all time scales.

“There’s life up there,” Allen says.

“Abundant life. But it’s not forest life.”

Of course, many people already know how to adapt to change: climatic changes, cultural disruptions and shifting relationships with landscapes over lifetimes and generations.

Pueblo people in the Southwest have been adapting to their landscapes since long before colonial times—and they hold within them a “genetic memory of how to have a healthy watershed,” says Julia Bernal. She works on water issues in New Mexico and is executive director of the Pueblo Action Alliance, an environmental and social justice group.

“Decolonizing” means having choices—in terms of energy, for example— and learning how to meet the needs of the community by building an economy around particular values.

There are 19 pueblos in New Mexico.

Each of these Native American tribes is different, and a distinct, sovereign nation. But they share some commonalities, including ancestry traced back to places like Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde. Bernal is an enrolled tribal member of the Pueblo of Sandia and is also from the Pueblo of Taos and the YuchiCreek Nations of Oklahoma.

Since pre-colonial times, Pueblo people have been adapting to their changing climates—migrating due to an epic drought in the 1100s from Chaco Canyon, for example, to live along the Rio Grande.

things are always changing,” he says. But he still feels grief at the rapid changes we’re experiencing.

To seek out joy, he also studies ecosystems that might persist or that can respond when we make different decisions.

The Santa Cruz River in Tucson, Arizona, had been dry—thanks to rampant development and reckless groundwater pumping—for roughly a century.

A few years ago, the local water utility agreed to use its treated effluent to rewater the river.

Some fish species had gone extinct, like an endemic species of pupfish. But they’ve now reintroduced the Gila topminnow and are watching greenery come back, as well as myriad species of dragonflies. Coyotes and bobcats make appearances on game cameras set up along the Santa Cruz.

“That’s a situation where it’s treated wastewater, but where you do it right, where you are purposeful about how you do it, now it does support a lot of species, it shows resilience. It was dry for 100 years, but species are back,” he says. “The birds found it again, the ducks came back, down to the snails, they came back.”

Bogan keeps coming back to the idea of resilience: “French Joe Canyon is not resilient; it’s never coming back unless we enter a new Ice Age period,” he says. “But species themselves, and some ecosystems, they can be resilient if we change our actions, if we change the way we manage our water or other resources.”

of the city of Albuquerque. And in southern New Mexico, the river channel is dry for most of the year.

Bernal recalls a recent conversation with her dad, who told her about almost falling into the river because it overbanked so much. “That really resonated with me, because I’ve only seen it as a very narrow, channelized system because of the dam,” she says, referring to Cochiti Dam, built upstream in the 1960s and ’70s by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

“I don’t think we’ll ever see the river look the same way that it did,” she says.

The alliance’s movement of reclaiming what was stolen, first by the Spanish and then by the US government, involves the recognition and reclaiming of lands.

And waters. “Everything that we do is…for everybody, for the health of the whole, because we understand the watershed system as a whole,” she says, adding: “This isn’t about taking all of the water resources. It’s not about taking all the land and not leaving anything for anybody—that’s a capitalist and colonialist concept.”

Bernal challenges non-Indigenous people to think more deeply about what Indigenous-led movements are trying to do. And to recognize they will benefit the global majority, particularly in this climate-changed world. “Some people think ‘decolonizing’ means we go back centuries,” she says. What it really means is having choices—in terms of energy, for example—and learning how to meet the needs of the community by building an economy around particular values.

It’s sad to see changes on the landscape, she says—whether they’re due to development, oil and gas, even recreational infrastructure, or to warming and its impacts. “Unfortunately, we’re going to see more of that; it’s inevitable, and especially at this rate we’re going at right now,” she says.

Whether it’s Bernal’s father recalling the Rio Grande before Cochiti Dam, or Bogan, Allen and others monitoring ecosystems and telling the stories of changing landscapes through the data they collect, storytelling helps us remember the past, and find new ways of living with the future.

When Allen goes out to the burn scars in the Jemez, he says he’s starting now to see it as “normal.” The conifer forest is gone, and it’s not coming back. And this isn’t just happening in the Southwest: Studies over the last decade show that by 2100, at least half of the Northern Hemisphere’s conifer forests will have died due to rising temperatures and the associated impacts.

“It’s a different world,” he says. “But I guess the gut punch of it wore off some time ago, and I’m now more engaged in appreciating and fostering what we have.”

As New Mexico health officials gear up to tackle vaccine hesitancy, a new LANL study examines how COVID-19 conspiracies spread on social media

arlier this week, New Mexico’s health department began allowing all New Mexicans 16 years and older to self-schedule their COVID-19 vaccines. This move—forecast the week prior by Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins—signaled yet another inflection point in the pandemic’s trajectory as officials move from managing the vaccine-eager to addressing the vaccine-hesitant.

As I write this, close to 700,000 New Mexicans have been fully vaccinated, with the state receiving national recognition mid-month as it passed the 50% mark for residents with at least one dose, “surging,” the New York Times wrote, “past states with far more resources in the race to achieve herd immunity against the coronavirus.”

Nonetheless, New Mexico, like the rest of the country, is now preparing to address folks who, for whatever reason, don’t want a vaccine. In an April 21 news conference, Collins said that while interest in the vaccine had increased 40% over the last month, “…there are certain communities and pockets of communities where people are skeptical or hesitant” and the state is in the process of reviewing data about those areas in order to create a program in which “community champions…folks who represent these communities that might be skeptical” will act as surrogates for the health department and relay information intended to assuage concerns. The department also will continue holding town halls to “really get beyond misin-

formation,” Collins said, “this idea that vaccines are not safe, which is not true.

We’ve really got to be available not only to understand, ‘do people not like vaccines?’ but what sort of misinformation have they received. And we have to be able to correct that.”

A comparable program, already running, uses the same philosophy. “Trusted Voices” has close to 50 people and counting from across the state discussing their experiences getting the vaccine and encouraging people to get their own (you can also nominate folks to be a “trusted voice” in the campaign at togethernm. org/trusted-voices-nomination).

Certainly, correctable misinformation may be driving some vaccine hesitancy. A US Census Bureau report at the end of March calculated the percentage of people in New Mexico hesitant about vaccines at close to 11%, with nearly 50% of those citing concerns about side effects; 39.1% simply not trusting them and just over 37% saying they’re waiting to see if they’re safe.

I asked DOH Deputy Cabinet Secretary Dr. Laura Chanchien Parajon if 11% sounded accurate, and she told me that in terms of the data the state is seeing, the percentage of people hesitant about receiving a COVID-19 ranges—anywhere from 11% to 20%. So far, she says, apprehension about cost and identification, particularly from immigrant populations, has emerged as a top concern, with the state responding with a campaign reinforcing that the vaccines are free and no government ID is required to receive one. Parajon says the state wants to be “data driven” in its vaccine hesitancy campaigns, and is using not only its own data collected from its outreach efforts, but from partners, such as Presbyterian Health Care.

But beyond data, she said, DOH wants to directly respond to concerns.

“What we want people to know is we want to partner with people. We want to partner with communities and listen to what people’s concerns are. We want to be able to answer them. That’s why we have the town halls: We want to answer your questions.”

I’ve listened in on some of the town halls and most of the questions people

have seemed, to me, fairly reasonable.

People want to know about how to arrange for a home-bound vaccine; they want to know the latest on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine (as of this writing, the state was set to start administering it again); they want to know when people younger than 16 will become eligible.

And then there are those questions that drift from the practical into the less moored territory, such as: “Does the COVID-19 vaccine involve a microchip of any kind?”

Dr. Jennifer Pyeatt, president and pharmacy director of Covenant Health in Hobbs, took that one on during a recent town hall.

No, Pyeatt said: “There is no microchip. I’ve pulled up thousands of those vaccines and it would be impossible to get a microchip through that tiny little syringe.”

I heard the question as I was reading through a new study from researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, published recently in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. Titled “Thought I’d Share First,” the study used publicly available, anonymized Twitter data to characterize four COVID-19 conspiracy theory themes and provide context for each through the first five months of the pandemic. Those themes were: 5G cell towers spread the virus; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation engineered or had otherwise malicious intent related to COVID-19; the virus was bioengineered or developed in a laboratory; and that the COVID-19 vaccines (still

in development at the time of the study) would be dangerous.

Ashlynn Daughton, an information scientist in LANL’s Information Systems and Modeling Group and co-author of the study, told me in an interview she had been interested in health and misinformation for several years and had done some work on the topic during the emergence of the Zika virus in 2015 and 2016. But “all of the circumstances surrounding the emergence of COVID,” including its scope and how quickly the science was evolving in real time “made the importance of studying health information crystalize,” she says. “And it was pretty easy to identify some things that were interesting and seemed kind of relevant and seemed [to be] popping up repeatedly.”

The study’s title, she says, references “a handful of different tweets, all in the same vein [basically saying] ‘I haven’t vetted this, but here’s a link to an article I saw.’ It’s an homage to how easy it is to re-share things without critically examining them.”

Starting with a dataset of approximately 1.8 million tweets (Facebook’s terms of service prevent scraping its data), the researchers then used the data collected for each of the four theories and built artificial intelligence models that were able to categorize tweets as COVID-19 misinformation or not. But the study also required a great deal of manual labor, with the scientists reading the tweets and labeling them (I wanted to know if reading those tweets had been funny or depressing and Daughton said it had been both).

One of the most interesting observations from the study, Daughton said, was “there seems to be evidence that [conspiracy theories] kind of grow and intertwine as time goes on, and we saw a lot of overlap.” This was less true for the 5G theory, which was the smallest subset and the most contained. The Bill Gates conspiracy theories, on the other hand, “were very diverse.”

While the data from this study now dates to the earlier part of the pandemic, it’s become increasingly clear that understanding how such theories evolve could be helpful in the future.

Daughton, who has a public health background, says one of the goals for future work is “to continue to explore how we could move this more into the public health communication realm and develop stronger collaborations with public health departments and figure out which of these components are more helpful to them.”

My guess is all of them.

CIVILITY Folks might not be aware that New Mexico played a pivotal role during the Civil War, and that countless bits of history are still revealing themselves as the years roll by. This week, at the Historic Santa Fe Foundation’s El Zaguán space on Canyon Road, author Richard Miller digs into one such chapter in a virtual talk—that of Col. John P. Slough, who, despite all odds and reportedly terrible planning skills, played a role in the Union victory at Glorieta Pass. Miller’s new book, John P. Slough: The ­Forgotten Civil War General, digs into the fateful tale of near-misses, Colorado Volunteers and the things that might have been had fate not intervened. This is a great one for dads out there.

season ­approaches—assuming Santa Fe’s public health orders remain relaxed.

“We’re following all the safety concerns, and then some,” Ramirez explains.

“This is our ten-year anniversary in Santa Fe, and it’s an exciting year trying to rebuild. We’re just happy to be back after having our doors closed. We’ve suffered a lot in the past year, and we’ve got a lot of challenges to go through, but we want people to come and support the local arts community.”

Throughout the past year, El Flamenco managed to stay afloat with emergency funding from the New Mexico Arts CARES Act and the city’s Arts and Culture Department. The company offered free remote classes for children and worked with the ArtWorks organization to help Santa Fe Public Schools teach flamenco to students. For now, though, Ramirez wants to remind Santa Feans of El Flamenco’s history in the community, including a 2017 Mayor’s Arts Award, and to recall the company’s pre-pandemic efforts.

“We’re asking the community to continue to consider supporting us,” Ramirez says. “We’re doing our darndest to make sure everyone has a safe experience.”

At the corner of Palace Avenue and Grant Avenue, you’ll find El Flamenco Spanish Cabaret, formerly known as El Flamenco de Santa Fe. Atop an inconspicuous staircase above WOW! Gallery, the company’s location is easy to miss—but when you cross over the threshold, the folks in charge want to ensure you’re stepping into one of the most authentic Spanish experiences in the Southwest.

“It’s always had the culture [of Spain] there. People are immersed in Andalusian cuisine and dance, at the same level you’d find in the south of Spain,” says Stephanie Ramirez, co-director and spokeswoman for El Flamenco. “We have the only Spanish flamenco director from Andalusia—the birthplace of flamenco— in the United States.”

The company traces its roots to Spain, where Director Antonio Granjero was born—in Jerez de la Frontera, itself considered the birthplace of flamenco—and spent much of his career. From Boston to New Orleans to Texas, Granjero boasts multiple accolades earned through the decades, including performing for Queen Elizabeth II. Ramirez has similar résumé points, including performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London before a high-profile dance career in the states. And now, for the first time in a year, the pair is opening their doors to the public. hen was the last time the characters from a novel jumped into your real-life settings? So that you see them in line at Lotaburger, or praying at the cathedral on their lunch break, or drinking margaritas with co-workers at the Cowgirl?

Albuquerque-born Kirstin Valdez Quade’s new novel grew out of a story from her debut collection Night at the Fiestas, which won the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 award in 2015. In The Five Wounds, Quade eases the reader into a nearby locale: the Española Valley, where five generations of the Padilla family live in the fictional village of Las Penas.

But despite the familiarity of the setting, the novel’s intimacy comes mostly from the people in it—they vibrate off the page, reminding you of yourself, someone you know well, or maybe the last person you stood behind in line at Allsup’s.

All families have generational trauma, but the Padillas are particularly afflicted. Quade writes, “Generations of injury chewed like blight into the leaves of the family tree: shaken skulls, knocking teeth, snapped wrists, collisions and brawls and fatal intoxication.” Amadeo Padilla,

33, is struggling with the alcoholism handed down to him by his dead father when his great-uncle, Tío Tíve, brings him into the fold of the local Penitente Brotherhood. He’s buckling down to play Jesus on Good Friday, setting aside beer and praying every day, when his pregnant 15-year-old daughter, Angel, shows up on his doorstep. She’s had a fight with her mother, Marissa, about Marissa’s abusive boyfriend, and she needs a place to live.

Each of the Padillas is seeking a chance at redemption. For Amadeo, that means taking care of his daughter, getting his windshield repair business off the ground and finally becoming a contributing member of his mother Yolanda’s household. Meanwhile, Yolanda is hiding a terminal diagnosis from the rest of the family, trying to keep her secretarial job at the Capitol for as long as possible before she leaves the world with no fuss or fanfare, martyr-style. Angel is attending the Smart Starts! high school continuation program for teen mothers, looking to her Oregon-transplant teacher, Brianna, for guidance in making her way out of heroin-ravaged Española, to college and beyond.

As she chronicles an eventful year in the lives of the Padillas, Quade negotiates the complexities and contradictions of race, class, gender and religion in Northern New Mexico with startlingly clear revelations. Brianna is a well-meaning nonprofit professional who is seemingly devoted to improving the lives of young mothers—until we catch her inner-

most thoughts, filled with white savior bias and bitterness at the open, lush sexuality of some of her students. Amadeo is furious at his sister for giving him a book called Mastering Ares: Breaking Free from the Prison of Male Rage, but a calamitous windshield repair gone wrong leaves him as helpless as Angel’s new baby. Yolanda is, to her own astonishment, set aflame when the ugliest man at the Cowgirl kisses her neck after a dance. Every person in the novel is hiding a surprise—or several.

The Five Wounds builds a strong empathy with its characters by gently stripping all their false fronts away, revealing

a generous, messy, emotional portrait of their humanity. After finishing it, I found myself peering closer at people in grocery stores and restaurants, wondering how exactly each individual negotiates their handed-down wounds at any given moment. * Speaking of redemption—or maybe epiphany—state Sen. book of poetry is not your average politician’s publication. In 48 anecdotal free-verse poems, The Definition of Empty details O’Neill’s tales from his years as executive director of the New Mexico Juvenile Parole Board. But, as New Mexico poet laureate Levi Romero writes, “this ain’t no sit-around, clapyour-hands, feel-good poetry.”

O’Neill, an Albuquerque Democrat, doesn’t shy away from what he calls “the visceral and unsubtle stories” of the subjects of the parole board, “which coalesce into their one universal theme of deprivation.” He says in an author’s note the poems are not an attempt to inhabit the voices of the kids he’s encountered, but “a tribute to them and an acknowledgment of the many challenges they face.”

In “Children’s Psychiatric Hospital,” he delicately questions a 14-year-old girl about her violent record before slipping into a raucous empathy: “Let us dance around the pagan fire, celebrating/ the pointed stick, the kerosene of what lives/underneath our lives.” In “Our Las Cruces Hearings,” he acknowledges the importance of these youthful lives to his own. “These have become my kids, their destiny is my/diagnosis & in their reflection is an endless succession/of teachings about what we are all brought into, so thoroughly in the salting.”

The withering wit O’Neill wields about political posturing is maybe the most satisfying part of his poetry. In “Easter Sunday” he acknowledges “the amnesia that comes with any titled position.” Other poems poke fun at gubernatorial nepotism, puncture the optimism of fellow poet Mary Oliver, and call out NIMBYs at a housing association meeting. Throughout, O’Neill provides revelatory flashes of his own imperfect humanity in the role of a public servant, writing of “the indignity of hope, the clarity in a simple task survived—/gradually dancing its blessing, the triumph of our witness.”

ultimedia artist and founding member of the Earthseed Black Arts Collective Nikesha Breeze’s new show Four Sites of Return is as much about ritualistic forms of creation as it is about experimentation and self-discovery. Divided across four main tenets—ritual, remembrance, reparation and reclamation—the massive installation takes up the entire first floor of downtown gallery form & concept, as well as parts of its second-story catwalk, and winds up with the potential and versatility to be so many things to so many different kinds of people.

“In essence,” Breeze says, “I’m a ritual artist.”

This is perhaps most evident in the show’s clay mask selections, a monumental 108 ceramic death masks sculpted by hand that flared into creation through what Breeze calls “ancestral memory.”

Created one a day for 108 days, no two are alike, most noticeably in texture; Breeze placed the pieces outside before firing them in a kiln, allowing nature to play a role. Some are wind-beaten and ­sallow, others aged and scarred; each looks more like a mold than a hand-sculpted face— each carries palpable life and looks like a Black person who might have lived. The

by Breeze to alter its racist narrative. It becomes a new story in Breeze’s hands, it becomes a new full-length book, she says, and individual pages will hang framed and readable. Or look to the showstopper piece in the center of the gallery’s ground floor: “The Ark of Return,” a stunning rowboat conceived, designed and built

by Breeze using 3D modeling techniques, woodworking, mesh and copper plates sewn around its hull like scales and etched with symbology, ancient languages, proprietary languages, numerological rumination. Each of these processes was new for Breeze, but digging into them, she says, proved challenging and satisfying. Within the boat itself, also etched on copper, is a three-pronged being Breeze has dubbed “The Black Goddexx of Time;” long c­ otton textiles hang from the ceiling, treated with wheat and sugar—reminders of a small fraction of labors forced upon enslaved people for centuries. Actual earth sits beneath the boat itself.

“It’s this psychic, spiritual boat for all our returns, all of my stories, the truth of the faces that have disappeared, the return of what has been taken as well as our abilities within the African diaspora,” Breeze says. “How do we continue to make our own boats, to hold ourselves and to move through the future in our own bodies? It’s this Afro-futurist form of conductor that carries us into new freedoms, it is a mother-maiden-crone type of mythical being that carries all directions.”

To obtain the etching’s look, Breeze used a process similar to electroplating for bookmaking, though she eschewed the precision needed for uniform copies with her own changes to the methodol-

ogy. Again, it’s experimental. Because of this, one of the three faces of the entity bears an almost blue patina. Somehow, it’s perfect.

“What’s interesting for me is that as I continue to follow these lines of inquiry into materials and concept and put them all together, it’s teaching me what the work is about,” Breeze notes. “In creating these spaces that are comforting to Black bodies and Indigenous bodies, in being connected to ancestors and a space to grieve, the white gaze also has a chance to feel healthily implicated and able to sit in reckoning. There’s a really different experience, I find, with who is seeing the work. A great accountability... it’s a very specific intersection. It really feels like magic.”

Of course, this merely scratches the surface of Four Sites of Return. Breeze has long been a performance artist as well, and will perform a day-long durational movement piece with special guests on the day the show opens. Later in its run, find a screening of her film Stages of Tectonic Blackness and, she says, other possible additions.

“Those who know how long I’ve been building on this work, even at times when people have said, ‘It’s not so bad right now, why are you making things about Black death?’....It’s a zeitgeist,” Breeze concludes. “The work I’ve been doing for a long time, the consciousness I’ve been building, all of it colliding with a time where...it’s sad that [the show] is so pertinent right now. I can’t wait for the day where work about Black death and Black life is not so necessary.”

There’s a funny saying I rather like: “First they came for the journalists and I did nothing; then we don’t know what happened next.” Maybe the word is actually “maudlin,” but still, America is one of the few places where the press is so strongly woven into the very fabric of society that, while being the only job expressly noted in the Constitution, it is often taken for granted. But this isn’t a story about the American press—it’s the tale of the small Romanian paper Gazeta Sporturilor which, in 2016, uncovered a shocking conspiracy within the country’s healthcare system.

In 2019’s Collective (or Collectiv, if you like), filmmaker Alexander Nanau follows the sports (yes, sports) paper’s then-editor Catalin Tolontan and his small team as they come to learn about shady hospital dealings across Romania. In 2015, the Romanian nightclub Collectiv caught fire during a show. That night, over two dozen in the audience were killed, and over two dozen more died of infections in the weeks that followed due to absurdly lacking policies in Romanian hospitals. At first, it seems as simple as shady mob deals and hospital managers diluting disinfectants to a horrifying degree, but as Tolontan and company dig deeper into the issue and reveal more to the story, murder, governmental shifts and systemic failures come to a head, and the country itself is

When developers Ed Boon and John Tobias conceived of the video game Mortal Kombat waaaaaaay back in 1990-something-or-other, not even they could conceive of its becoming an absolute juggernaut property (to be fair, Congress’ response to its now-tame violence was probably the biggest favor anyone ever did for anyone)—but the ol’ MK has grown ­massively and captured fans across generations.

That’s kind of why director Paul W.S. Anderson (he makes those awful Resident Evil movies, too) made the original movie in 1995, and that’s for sure why Simon McQuoid is out there with a new take as of last week.

And though the lore of the Mortal Kombat multiverse is the sort of knotted madness that can only come from decades of adding, adjusting, retconning and re-kajiggering, McQuoid starts simply here, with information about a semi-annual, multi-dimensional martial arts tournament that, for some reason, allows whatever dimension is victorious to take over another dimension. Yikes.

But let’s go back a bit to a Japanese curse from the 1600s, where Sub Zero (yes, that’s a name; Joe Taslim), uses his ice powers to kill some poor schmoe and his family. See, Sub Zero hails from Outworld, which is, like, this desert

forever changed.

Full disclosure: We like movies about investigative journalism, but Nanau’s look at Gazeta Sporturilor’s herculean efforts goes beyond mere insights into how the press is valuable and shows us the results of difficult reporting. Nanau hits it from three main angles—the paper’s day-to-day reporting on the issue; the fire’s surviving victims and the families of the dead; and newly appointed Minister of Health Vlad Voiculescu, a former patients’ rights activist who, in perhaps one of the more shocking twists in the film, actually cares about the Romanian people.

Through whistleblower doctors, gut-wrenching footage of the fire and the hospital conditions, we observe how the country itself changes. A small team did that, and it’s important for everyone— from everyday people to journalists themselves, even in small towns—to understand what can come from an unwavering dedication to the truth

Seems he doesn’t want to take part in the upcoming tournament so much as he wants to use monsters and four-armed beasts to kill everyone because there can’t be a tournament if there aren’t any fighters, right? Still with us? We don’t actually care, because here in Earthrealm (that’s where we live), MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) just found out he’s been marked with a mystical dragon...thing, and thus chosen to take part in mortal kombat (lower-case k this time).

Do the monsters and four-armed beasts and MMA fighters get backstories? A little! But barely! Do they get character development?

Shit, no! Will you care? Not even at all, because someplace between the ice swords and robot arms and lasers fired from eyeballs belonging to Australian mercenaries, you just kind of think “Fuck it,” and get pumped on that multi-­ dimensional ice ninja slashing a dude from hell, freezing his blood into a blood knife in mid-air and then stabbing said dude from hell with his own blood...knife. McQuoid leans into why we’re watching (kung fu and robot arms) so brilliantly, in fact, that you won’t even care how cringey it is to hear a character use a line from the games like “Flawless victory!” And that’s because the character who said it just sawed someone in half with his hat. HIS HAT! Anyway, it’s a really stupid movie with solid CGI and some very cool fight scenes. Can

and transparency. There simply is no overstating how important the press can be, and Nanau’s dive into what it takes to make that a reality—especially as it applies to the people’s right to know what their government is doing—is nearly flawless in execution.

++ IT’S IRISH. ALSO, IT’S FUN. -- FORGETTABLE CHARACTERS, BUT HECK, IT’S IRISH!

Irish films almost always have a leg up on the competition. Someone speaks and we Americans go “Aww! This is so cute!” Such is Boys From County Hell, director Chris Baugh’s sophomore feature.

In an Irish village which lives off a Roswelltype reputation for inventing the modern vampire (and which simply won’t let you forget Bram Stoker was born in Ireland), tension is afoot. Historical burial mounds right outside the village are set to be destroyed by a construction gang eager to open space for a highway. But unleashed from beneath the mounds lies the terror that inspired Stoker’s Dracula, and—yeah, you know where this is going.

Charming is the right word to use, mostly because it’s Irish; fans of Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead will feel right at home (and yes, we know Ireland isn’t England). Here, though, Boys From County Hell’s comedy most-

ly comes from deadpan realism—from vampire-zombies who emerge and go for the kill, and from living characters yelling expletives who spend most of the 90 minutes fleeing chaos and bickering.

Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders) steps lively into this otherwise average product, his expressive eyes alone providing much-needed sympathy. It’s ultimately granola to an otherwise bland but filling yogurt, if you will.

There’s a great concept at play, primarily the destruction of heritage—in this case, small mounds worshipped by the small-town residents. Destroy cultural memory at your peril, for who knows what terrors are unleashed by such action? In a nation often strained by losing itself and desiring modernity, this thematic heart is heavy-handed and still underused and wobbling. Boys wants to be a classic creature feature or a piece of social commentary, and seemingly does not realize it can be both.

Despite sacrificing its stronger elements, it’s still an immensely entertaining film where it’s safe to forget the characters’ names.

Come for the goofs and stay for the actually impressive gore props and monster make-up.

There’s great dialogue, passable acting and a well-trodden path. Is that really such a bad thing? Streaming service Shudder still proves willing to take chances on what it’ll show, too, and remains about the best place to go for movie scares. (Riley Gardner) Shudder, NR, 90 min.

JUNIPER was surrendered to SFAS when his owner passed away in 2020. He was subsequently adopted only to be returned when he was diagnosed with early diabetes.

We believe he was fed only dry food, which likely caused the diabetes. JUNIPER is a sweet and social cat, who gets along with other cats. He is easy to test glucose and administer insulin. Given his age, we are hoping that over time with a lowcarb wet food diet, he will go into remission.
