Emergency shelter for homeless COVID-19 patients repurposes former college campus housing

n the week following the first COVID-19 cases in New Mexico, as governors across the country issued stay-at-home orders, John Fairbanks headed toward Colorado to pick up a truck he’d bought. The plan was to drive it back through New Mexico and all the way to the place he’s from in Arizona before the virus took full hold of the country.

But someone stole his truck in Las Vegas, New Mexico, he says, and by the time he arrived in Santa Fe by bus, it was too late to catch a train because most routes had been limited or canceled.

He’d also started to feel sick and quickly developed a bad cough, a fever, aches in his chest and a stomach flu.

Fairbanks was one of the first people sent to the emergency shelter at Midtown Campus that the city established at the onset of the COVID-19 state of emergen-

cy in order to provide shelter to unhoused individuals who either show symptoms of or test positive for COVID-19.

The shelter has 25 residents as of Tuesday. So far none have confirmed cases of the virus.

Yet, when Fairbanks arrived at the shelter on March 28, his symptoms were so severe that he had started writing letters to friends and loved ones in case he never got to see them again.

People who are referred to the shelter by health care providers or other homeless shelters are allowed to stay after they test negative, says Nicole Pond, a Santa Fe city park ranger who is the resident coordinator for the emergency shelter, but they are not allowed to leave and must follow social distancing rules.

The shelter is staffed by city crew members and volunteers who drive sanitized buses to pick up new patients or provide health checkups. Youthworks provides hot meals.

Fairbanks is one of a handful of residents who have graduated from dorm rooms to apartments in another building on campus and who have taken on responsibilities to help clean up the grounds and the rooms for new guests.

He’s even started a community vegetable garden.

“Here you get the opportunity to do things that you haven’t been able to do in a while…It’s the perfect place for people who don’t have a home to follow the order to stay home and it’s just a good opportunity to better yourself and start over, as far as I see it,” says Fairbanks.

Pond, the resident services coordinator, says she can relate to how some of the residents feel about the place because for her the campus has also presented a surprise opportunity for personal growth.

Pond was promoted from city lifeguard to city park ranger just a week before the state announced its first positive case.

actly the turn she expected her new job to take, but she’s enthusiastic about her role and excited to be helping others through the crisis, she says.

When she arrived with a city parks crew to begin the project, Pond tells SFR the buildings and campus were in various stages of neglect.

A substance-abuse treatment program, emergency services and a few other enterprises already occupied some buildings on the campus before COVID-19, but the dorms that provide space for the shelter had not been in use for at least two years. Some sat empty for far longer.

Some rooms contained signs that squatters had weathered out the winter there.

All required deep cleaning, re-plumbing and rewiring to get electricity and running water.

The shelter team is cleaning out 150 rooms for emergency use. So far, 60 are ready for residents in two wings of one dorm building and in adjacent campus apartments. Rooms are separated on different floors of the building by levels of urgency, with one section for people who are waiting for test results and need to completely self-isolate, one section for people who have tested negative but are remaining at the shelter, and another reserved for patients who test positive.

John Muñoz, director of the city Parks and Recreation Division, tells SFR the city hopes to find more permanent housing options for all the residents at the emergency shelter and is working with The Life Link toward a longer-term solution.

Last week, the city postponed a meeting where city councilors were expected to vote to begin negotiations with the Midtown Evaluation Committee’s recommended master developer. The city has not yet revealed the identity of its chosen developer but the meeting is now scheduled for May 4. No plans have been announced for audience interaction, but the city has been broadcasting meetings on its YouTube channel.

woke up today thinking about Foursquare, which, you may or may not remember, was a popular social media app a decade ago that let users check in to restaurants and other businesses, win badges, know where other people were hanging out and the like.

These days, Foursquare is a “location data and technology platform” and the business of pinpointing people’s locations is less a social undertaking and more of a scientific one.

I’m referring, naturally, to contact tracing, which became a top news story in the last week as scientists and governments acknowledged the protocol as a crucial element for being able to restart the economy.

In public health, contact tracing has been a key practice for addressing contagious diseases, including HIV, Ebola,

As for New Mexico, digital contact tracing sounds like it’s coming our way.

Right now, the state has about 100 people doing manual contact tracing; they’ve contacted more than 150,000 people, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report (which the health department confirmed to SFR).

During an April 15 public briefing, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the state has been asked to take part in a federal pilot program for testing, surveillance and contact tracing. I asked the governor if that would include digital contact tracing. Yes, she said.

“It is clear if we are going to be doing this with this pandemic for the next year while we’re waiting for a vaccine, it’s got to be much more robust,” she said.

“We are interested in all of these new applications. We are workwork ing with any number of states and now the federal government in selecting what we think will be the best application.”

Describing herself as “very expandoptimistic” about expand ed contact tracing, the governor noted “dithat having it is “di rectly related to our economability to do econom ic recovery.”

That prospect may propel otherwise anan ti-technology people to download that app.

For what it’s worth, the academics supporting a privacy-forward digital tracing system also say the system should be curturned off when the cur rent crisis is over.

What a wonderful day that will be.

SARS and tuberculosis, to name a few prior outbreaks. In essence, contact tracing involves identifying and monitoring people who may have had contact with someone who is infected.

This sounds simple enough but is reportedly a massive task. A Kaiser Family Foundation briefing on contact tracing earlier this month estimates enormous figures should the US be able to ramp up testing to appropriate levels (another key step in opening up the economy while waiting for a vaccine). For example, KFF says, if the US needs to perform 750,000 COVID-19 tests per week to try to identify most of the cases (as has been recommended), and if 10% end up positive, then 75,000 cases would require contact tracing. These figures align, KFF points out, with what happened in February in Wuhan, China in which 1,800 contact tracing teams of five people investigated tens of thousands of contacts each day.

Enter technology.

No, not Foursquare. But, rather, Google and Apple. The two tech teams announced on April 10 they had teamed up to create the framework for Bluetooth-based contact-tracing apps; next month, they will release an API (application programming interface) that public health apps can use for both Android and iOS systems. In a nutshell, Apple and Google’s framework would let one phone’s Bluetooth recognize and record another in an anonymous fashion.

If someone using a contact tracing app tests positive, the Bluetooth will be able

to identify the phones that have been in proximity of that user’s phone. For what it’s worth, this week, 300 academics signed a public letter supporting the use of Bluetooth technology as more likely to preserve people’s privacy than other centralized systems.

Naturally, contact tracing apps’ efficacy relies to a large degree on users’ willingness to opt in. In this golden age of mistrust of technology and government (let alone technology and government working together), will people use contact tracing apps as energetically as they once voluntarily logged their every visit to restaurants, bars and stores?

Hard to say. I’m inclined to think US Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, was right when he said, “Apple and Google have a lot of work to do to convince a rightfully skeptical public that they are fully serious about the privacy and security of their contact tracing efforts.”

And while digital contact tracing and other types of technology have been cited as one of the reasons China, Taiwan and Singapore were able to contain their cases, it’s widely agreed some countries’ technologies would be less palatable here (such as mandatory electronic wristbands in Hong Kong that alert authorities when quarantined people leave their houses). For a more detailed description of other countries’ technologies, as well as the potential concerns of rolling out digital contact tracing in the

ora McKenna has kept her heritage language, Nambé Tewa, close to her. Through decades of political and cultural change, along with years of punishment for speaking it at the Santa Fe Indian School, she kept her language in her mind and heart, even if she couldn’t speak it out loud.

Finally, the public school district immersed her in English as her third language, after Spanish and Tewa.

Though multiple institutions tried and failed to take her Native tongue away, McKenna, who is now 80 years old, and her daughter, Brenda, 53, began a language revitalization program at Nambé Pueblo in 2002. Their hopes of creating a Nambé Tewa dictionary and teaching more Indigenous people the language is still in the works. It’s slow going because money is tight and volunteers have much work ahead, including creating educational protocols, putting word to page and more.

Now another obstacle has appeared for the unique dialect of Tewa that has roughly 30 fluent speakers left: the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Mexico’s shelter-in-place orders intended to stop the spread have had numerous other consequences. The virus stopped in-person language revitalization classes in their tracks and has forced other programs to up their technology games in an effort to save the languages, many of which are labeled various levels of endangered by UNESCO. For example, although in-person classes at Nambé are canceled for the foreseeable future, the pueblo’s efforts to document the language have taken on even more importance as COVID-19 moves across the country, taking many of the lives of the elderly people it infects.

“When my mom is gone, when I’m gone and all the other Native speakers are gone that are living today, we want to make sure that there’s something left for the ones that are toddlers and the ones that are to come behind us,” Brenda says. “Ideally, it would be great if Nambé Tewa was still orally

APS Indian Education Senior Director Daisy Thompson, a member of the Navajo Nation, who speaks to SFR via telephone, says the district is “very fortunate” because officials purchased the latest Diné language teaching software, called The Navajo Language Renaissance, only a year ago.

“Our students are able to access that from their homes,” Thompson says. “It’s an online course and there’s built-in assessments. Two out of the three teachers were already using it with their students.”

The Zuni language program does not have teaching software. But the instructors are calling each family to help set up Google Classrooms so they can get back to learning. School is often one of the only places where urban Indigenous kids are able to access Native languages. Such a connection does more than teach them how to speak—it links to other aspects of their culture, too, according to Thompson.

Thompson spearheaded the APS Indian Education Department language program about a decade ago, beginning first with Diné and then adding Zuni four years ago. She applies for federal funding and has gradually added more teachers through the years.

Thompson’s first language is Diné, and she started learning English in kindergarten. That’s not the norm for most students in the district.

“With the urban students, we’re finding that the only time that they are being exposed to the language is in their classroom,” Thompson says. “Once they go

home, there’s no one at home, oftentimes, that speaks their language and I found that with some Zuni students, they will go back to the pueblo and participate in the various feasts or various events and practice their Zuni there with their elders...

But in their home, they don’t hear that a lot unless they have an elder or uncle or a grandpa or grandmother. That’s our biggest challenge.”

passed down. But that’s not happening, and so we really did all this documentation out of the crisis that we recognized and the crisis of Indigenous language loss is a worldwide one.”

Native elders dying and the technology tribes are able to set up and utilize before that happens takes on a new meaning. McKenna is worried for herself, her language and her family and friends as COVID-19 sweeps through Native lands.

“It’s very scary because there’s not too many of us left and we all have all kinds of health issues,” McKenna says. “We’re more vulnerable to it. I get a very scary feeling on it because if we all go… [we’re] being erased.”

It’s a valid fear: Nearly 42% of New Mexicans who have been infected are Native people, according to the state’s Department of Health.

He is a second-language learner of Ojibwe and an Ojibwe professor at Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where linguists, Native speakers and scholars use online classrooms and have compiled written and audio databases of the language.

Treuer says some pueblos around New Mexico have been hesitant to employ technology or haven’t had the funds to do so.

“Some language groups have been very reluctant to embrace modern technologies and [COVID-19 is] maybe stir-

ring the pot a little bit and forcing some who’ve been late or slow adopters to take advantage of technology,” Treuer says. “I think ultimately, unless we’re going to go Amish, so to speak, and try to wall our languages and cultures off at a certain point in time, we have to embrace all of these technological things.”

Software and apps are among the most powerful tools to overcoming distance and time, as well as the loss of elders. For example, in Minnesota, Treuer is helping a tribe that counts only 25 speakers of its dialect. Members are collaborating to create a Rosetta Stone program.

“A lot of the barriers for programs include overcoming time, where you have a small number of speakers and there’s been a lot of damage to a language-speaking community, overcoming space because people are spread out, not everyone has a fluent speaker they can talk to every day,” Treuer says. “Technology can do that.”

But there are some things that technology can’t do—especially if there isn’t access to basic internet, which is a widespread problem across tribes in the Southwest. The US Census Bureau found in 2019 that New Mexico is one of the least connected states in the country, especially in the poorest counties, such as McKinley and Rio Arriba.

In those areas, using Zoom and Google Classroom is an impossibility.

“Especially when you’re talking about the tribes here in New Mexico where they don’t have broadband access, that kind of technology is not a very reliable source to use in many of our Native communities here,” says Christine Sims, a member of the Pueblo of Acoma and University of New Mexico associate professor who directs the American Indian Language Policy Research and Teacher Training Center. She and her team work all across the state and the Southwest helping tribes revitalize languages and plan programs.

Santa Fe Public Schools, despite having students across the county who represent around 110 different tribal nations, does not have a language revitalization program, though there has been talk about it off and on through the years, according to Nancy Davis, a Turtle Mountain Chippewa member who heads the district’s Native American Student Services.

But there are major obstacles in the way for it to be offered in Santa Fe: funding and enough fluent, tribal-approved teachers to direct the classes, as well as basic logistics. Davis says the district is open to the idea and, “looking down the CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

road,” the distance learning that the pandemic forced on the country could be a catalyst for online language classes.

“With distance learning it could be an opportunity for, let’s say, Cora McKenna or one of the teachers to say, ‘Can we access all of our Nambé students and then they’ll get on virtually from wherever they’re at?’” Davis tells SFR. “Now that we’re getting well versed in this and the kids are learning how to access Zoom and Google Hangout, maybe this would be an opportunity to revitalize the languages.”

Over at the Santa Fe Indian School, Language Department Chair William Pacheco tells SFR its 150 to 200 students taking classes in Keres, Tewa and Diné will use Google Classroom and recordings sent by their teachers, as well as talking with their families and social media, for the last few weeks of the academic school year.

But he says many students, and even himself, have struggled to access the internet.

“Our primary role as language teachers during this time is to make sure students are using their languages at home and encouraging them to have their families speak in their languages since we’ll be spending a lot of time at home,” Pacheco says. “Teachers have been calling their students and engaging in oneon-one conversations.”

Pacheco, a member of Santo Domingo Pueblo, says the history and knowledge of previous sicknesses brought to Native lands from colonizers is built into the language.

“We have lived through situations like these,” Pacheco tells SFR. “[The students’] families encourage them to have a perspective that’s not just in our lifetimes but our ancestors’ lifetimes that have lived through many difficult times before. That’s also in the language as well.

We have words that talk about pandemics, sickness and things like that.”

Native American Languages Spoken in New Mexico

Different dialects of the Tewa language are spoken by just six pueblos in New Mexico. Tewa is considered severely endangered by UNESCO because there are only roughly 1,200 speakers, and most of them are elderly. For languages such as this, time and now the pandemic are working against them.

In the way that history has a way of repeating itself, this disease appears to be hitting Native people in the Southwest particularly hard.

Of New Mexico’s 2,072 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday night, the health department identifies 41.47% of those infected as Native—despite Native people making up just 10.9% of the state’s overall population. That’s compared to white people, who make up 19.87% of infections and 37.1% of the population.

The death toll is falling disproportionately on Native people as well. On the Navajo Nation, with a population of about 170,000, 45 people have died of the respiratory illness. In New Mexico, where more than 2 million people live, 58 deaths have been recorded. It’s still unclear exactly why Native people are so hard hit by the virus.

“The older populations are definitely a smaller percentage of our population compared to middle age and much younger generations,” Sims says. “As we lose elders, we also lose speakers and the cultural knowledge that they hold.

It’s really a race against time as to how much younger generations will be able to pick up in terms of language, but also then being able to acquire the things that come with that cultural knowledge. I like to call it cultural literacy. What is it that they learn in terms of the use of the languages within the settings of their homes and communities? That’s what we stand to lose if we lose our elders.”

porarily put on hold because of the pandemic. The weeklong summer institute to teach roughly 40 Indigenous people how to better teach their heritage languages in schools is also canceled and their typical year round work out in the pueblos and tribes to help them revitalize their languages has come to a halt.

However, she says the center’s work to help tribes with “language planning” is especially important in the harsh light of COVID-19. After restrictions are lifted, she sees the center’s work in the coming years to be primarily focused on that.

Sims doesn’t know when the summer institute to train more Indigenous language teachers will be rescheduled.

Other tribes are also facing community cultural cancellations. Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, whose members also speak Tewa, has canceled classes for the rest of the academic year.

Matthew J. Martinez , deputy director of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/ Laboratory of Anthropology, Ohkay Owingeh member and the grandson of celebrated language preservationist Esther Martinez, tells SFR their language is “a shared living entity that is connected to place.”

“Without being out in our homelands with families and community members, our language and cultural understandings are compromised,” Martinez says. “The Tewa instructor has assigned homework for students and parents. This has been an important step to continue language instruction; however, the reinforcement from a teacher and explanations are a challenge.”

Other important cultural events for the pueblo, such as the end-of-the-year student powwow that combines dance with language, might be canceled because of COVID-19. The students normally spend the year making the ceremonial regalia they wear during the gathering.

fore looked to the power of cultural traditions to get through challenging times,” Martinez says. “Despite new viruses and existing health conditions, we are reminded to draw upon our cultural traditions as a way of survival for this generation and for those yet to come.”

Both drawing upon cultural traditions and using technology is what Indigenous Language Institute Executive Director Inée Slaughter says will lead to the continued revitalization of New Mexico’s languages. Using smartphones, apps, software and computers to record, listen and teach language are all crucial to making sure middle-aged to young tribal members are learning from the fluent elders. “[Language revitalization is] really important in a larger perspective,” Slaughter tells SFR. “We see the urgency as our fluent speakers are diminishing in number. There’s an urgency to raise up new speakers very rapidly. Many communities have selected to teach the little ones and ILI is really excited about that and supports that but we also want to push the envelope to involve adults in the communities.”

Why heritage languages matter The ties between language and culture are inextricable, from religious ceremonies to daily life. Despite hundreds of years of colonialism, attempts at boarding schools to beat heritage languages out of Indigenous people and multiple epidemics brought to tribes from across the world, the original people of the Southwest have been able to hold onto their words.

From continuing to speak in her language behind the instructors’ backs with the other Pueblo students at the Santa Fe Indian School decades ago to teaching her own children how to sing and count in Nambé Tewa, Cora McKenna says English never became her dominant language.

She and her daughter Brenda consider Nambé Tewa a living language— their dictionary will include new words for “computer” and “Post-it note.” For McKenna, who still teaches Tewa part time, it’s not just about speaking and teaching words. It’s about as much equity as possible while still living in her colonized homeland.

“I think we should have a fair amount of a chance to learn our [language] and not be called foreigners,” McKenna says from self-isolation in her home on the pueblo.

Sims, who is from the Pueblo of Acoma, thinks this time sheltering in place can still be used to cultivate language and culture, even with a lack of technology in many rural areas.

“Language helps build relationships,” Sims says. “Program or no program or technology or no technology…I think that’s one of the other key elements or aspects of revitalization is this idea of building relationships again among speakers and certainly between the younger generations and older generations. That’s really key because both values and perspectives about the world are passed down through language in all the stories, just everyday activities that happen in the family. Those should still continue, there shouldn’t be a stop to that.”

Treuer sees his relationship with his heritage language as a bigger part of overall health: a healthy language means a healthy culture, which is also tied into a healthy diet and finances and politics.

“The success of a country like America will never be its ability to assimilate everybody into one big monoculture, but its ability to support many different cultures and languages and ways of solving problems and a diversity of identities,” Treuer says. “Language revitalization, it’s not just about more pretty birds singing in the forest. It’s about the most powerful tools that help everybody have a long, healthy, happy life.”

he Santa Fe Children’s Museum has certainly faced its fair share of difficulties over the years—it even shut down briefly in 2016. But as one of few such organizations in the state, the museum has managed to weather crises before, and now offers a rather robust suite of programming options, many of which are still underway.

According to Hannah Hausman, the museum’s senior director of development and communication, conditions have been good, both in terms of funding and attendance. And though the COVID-19 pandemic has made it impossible for patrons to visit in real life, there’s still a lot going on, both online and at the museum’s sprawling garden on Old Pecos Trail.

“I think that our board and staff have been really strong in terms of fundraising and all of those pieces, and that hasn’t stopped,” Hausman says. “We’re open, we’re operational virtually, we’re providing all these things to the community and our financials are great; we’re in the black.

It’s all great [but] this hit and we had all these exciting things on the horizon, and now we’re on pause a bit.”

Just because you can’t take your kids for a visit, however, doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of ways to engage.

“And they can customize it,” she says.

“They’re learning about volcanoes?

Climate? We can customize our content to the classroom. It’s tailored so teachers can know they’re signing up for something that’s helping them—and it can be delivered in English and Spanish.”

Additionally, the museum is gathering videos of community members reading stories. The free service already boasts mayor Alan Webber and, according to Hausman, is open to any Santa Feans who wish to submit—Santa Femous or not. Stories, she expects, will start rolling out on the website on Wednesdays.

Even cooler? Hausman says administrators are in the early talks for developing a satellite location of the Children’s Museum on the traditionally underserved Southside of town.

“How great would that be when everything is lifted?” she says excitedly.

Further details are unavailable, but what can you do to support in the meantime?

Well, buying a membership ($85$175) wouldn’t hurt for starters.

Hasuman and Hillary understand that its benefits aren’t as jam-packed as in times of health, but if the concern is an expiration date, they’re taking that into consideration and extending them gratis—you won’t lose any months to the stay-at-home order. The museum is still accepting volunteer applications as well.

You can also simply donate if you’re so inclined. As long as they have even a little funding, they’ll keep serving the youths.

Just know they’re not alone.

“There’s a movement of over 350 [children’s museums] across the nation who’ve banded together to keep delivering our missions,” Hausman explains.

“We invested in a high-powered computer and a couple really cool programs, and what they can do in an online classroom is deliver a field trip to space,” Hillary says. “A lot of the classrooms are doing reading and math, and everything else, they’re on their own—this is an opportunity to address real science curriculum. It gives you a real scientist right there in your home.”

“One of the things we realized is, there’s one program in particular that can’t stop, and that’s Seeds and Sprouts.

Mother nature doesn’t wait,” says Leona Hillary, the museum’s director of education. “Our garden is in full swing and we’ve got production with over 26 raised beds.”

Hillary says staff are caring for seedlings started by regular students and visitors, tending to existing garden maintenance and continuing the museum’s social media presence on Facebook and Instagram so even kids who can’t pop by to see how their plants are faring can still get progress reports.

“In the past, kids would harvest and take home,” she says. “We now have double the produce than we had before, and we’re doing a grab-and-go initiative so kids can grow their own food in their own gardens [at home].”

This means a small, no-contact booth at the Santa Fe Farmers Market (which has been deemed essential during the stay-at-home order) on Saturdays. Each seed kit comes with four packages of seeds plus information and suggestions for gardening activities. The Children’s Museum has also partnered with the Northern Youth Project to get more complicated gardening items to teens in rural areas who might want more to do than plopping a few seeds in the ground.

“And we’re working on how people can request a victory garden kit through the public schools,” Hillary adds.

Victory Gardens are a WWII holdover wherein governments urged citizens to plant gardens to fill out their own food supplies while rationing—and to just plain have something to do.

Outside of the gardening milieu, the museum is offering virtual field trips to places unexpected.

Not everyone knows the Children’s Museum has an acre’s worth of garden.

Just because your kids can’t hang there right now doesn’t mean it’s not still going.

Hillary says the museum is beginning to contact teachers this week about how they can get involved. With two educators on hand to facilitate the field trips, she estimates they could accommodate up to 10 trips a day. In the beginning, they’ll focus on K-8 students, but if the program proves popular, it could expand.

Vinaigrette Owner Slams Grubhub Erin Wade is mad as hell, and she’s not gonna take this anymore

I

n one of the more delightfully punkrock happenings of the last week, Vinaigrette owner Erin Wade has penned a real doozy of an open letter for Matt Maloney, the CEO of food delivery service Grubhub.

In the letter (which you can read at sfreporter.com), Wade blasts the concept of Grubhub and other such delivery apps and services, claiming that already thin profit margins are ruthlessly slashed by the company’s 30% commission fee. “You are part of the reason why restaurants are so vulnerable to the shock from this pandemic,” she writes.

Wade is no stranger to this line of thought, having published op-eds in the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Austin American-Statesman in Austin, Texas, where she opened a Vinaigrette location in 2016. But this time, it was a recent Grubhub commercial (it’s on YouTube, is bonkers) espousing family values and the current American restaurant crisis that set Wade off.

Setting aside the saccharine-sweet tone of that ad, one might be forgiven for assuming Grubhub and similar services are really on the side of the restaurants but Wade says their very nature and existence are an affront to brick-and-mortar restaurants, to her customers and to the

idea of good food served well with a side of real-life service.

“One of the things that’s very frustrating for us is that our customers don’t know how bad [these services are] for us,” Wade tells SFR by phone from the very farm where many of Vinaigrette’s ingredients are grown. “They’re exploiting the general goodwill that’s been built up for restaurants for hundreds of years.”

If Wade had her druthers, most of Vinaigrette’s sales would be in-person, sitting down, but the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted how restaurants are forced to do business. Still—the worst part? Wade has never even partnered with Grubhub or the other services, but that can’t stop them from featuring her menu on their sites or ordering and delivering the food anyway.

“I am not signed up with Grubhub, and the reason I won’t sign up for that or Door Dash or the locals, is that they all have the same business model,” Wade says. “The basic model is, they charge a commission if you sign up to be a partner, which is, in Grubhub’s case, 30% and sometimes more per meal; especially little small restaurants that sometimes make 5% profit, maybe, it’s so much more than we make on the meal… they’re exacting too dear a price.”

Wade says she and her staff had grown accustomed to which “customers” actually work for a delivery service, but notes that the larger issue is in care taken during the delivery process. To-go orders are certainly a part of Vinaigrette’s business, she explains. When it comes to pickup—as in food handed to the customer directly from her own vetted staff—she can guarantee a certain level of quality. When it’s being handled by whom she describes as “basi-

cally a stranger,” however, there’s no telling how long the food will sit someplace or whether it will be jostled during delivery—and it isn’t Grubhub who faces the repercussions.

“We pay for it,” Wade says. “For example, say we have a special salad the customer knows about but they don’t see it on Grubhub, so they order a $7 garden salad and write down in the [order comments] that they want yams and pork and everything that goes into the I Yam What I Yam salad…that’s an $18 salad.”

Wade is not naïve, however. She understands local restaurants hoping to survive must make certain concessions, delivery in less than ideal conditions among them.

But rather than bow to the Silicon Valley companies, she’s launched her own delivery service, which is up and running now through vinaigretteonline.com.

“It’s a temporary solution, but we’re also working on our own proprietary

platform now,” she tells SFR. “Right now, I know the drivers who are taking their food are responsible. They’re sanitizing their cars between every trip, wearing gloves and masks—I can’t say that about somebody who’s a stranger.”

It’s hard to say what the effect of her letter will be otherwise. Many reading this right now are probably wondering what they’re supposed to do during the pandemic and many reading this will probably continue to use these services.

Wade concedes there is truth in that need, and that it’s not going to be possible for every restaurant to put together their own services. Still, she says, with things looking like they do, some Silicon Valley-based middle man simply hurts the bottom line of locally owned restaurants, no matter how pretty their commercials might be.

“Luckily I’m super-scrappy,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve got deep scrap-itude.”

Streetlight Harmonies Review Doo-wop—over and over

Doo-wop is fun, OK? It just is. And someplace within its DNA resides the building blocks for pretty much all the music that came afterwards, from R&B to rock to hip-hop and beyond.

But if you ask the people who were there—the Little Anthonies, the Jon Baumans, the Barbara Jean Englishes—it was always just R&B, it was always more about vocal harmonies (many of the greats were too poor to buy instruments), it was always more about the rhythm and expression than any tidy title. These people don’t much care for the term “doo-wop,” in fact, nor do they care for how cast aside, forgotten and ultimately unpaid they wound up being after the genre faded into oldies territory.

In Streetlight Harmonies, from director Brent Wilson, we hear tell of an era when practically everyone with a half-decent voice took to the corners, bathed in the glow of the streetlight, and sang. Like all things, once industry made sense of it, it was commodified and packaged, its creators were chewed up and spat out; Frankie Lymon, for example, died young despite his indelible mark with The Teenagers. Most others were simply forgotten.

“Why do you go to the bathroom?” Jesse Eisenberg, as Marcel Marceau, asks his father in the new film Resistance from Venezuelan filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz. In the scene, Marceau’s father Charles (Karl Markovics) is stubbornly demanding to understand why his son creates art.

“Because my body gives me no choice,” Charles responds.

“And there it is,” Eisenberg’s character replies.

It’s a quiet yet poignant moment in an otherwise by-the-numbers WWII film, but it’s one that heralds more harrowing events to come: In case you didn’t know, Marcel Marceau— yes, the mime—saved or helped save literally thousands of Jewish children during the Nazi occupation of France, and Jakubowicz takes us inside some sort of sensationalized version of those events, ones it’s probable not everyone knows.

Eisenberg’s take on the most famous mime is certainly…something. His trademarked fasttalking weirdness kind of works in earlier, sillier scenes set in the late-1930s, but the deeper into the war things progress, the more it seems out of place. He tries to make up for it with mime work and tense glances exchanged with his love interest Emma (Clémence Poésy), but never once does he feel like an actual mime and never once does he seem like someone actually up to the tasks unfolding before 20

And they’re none too happy about it. Through interviews with singers, DJs, later singers, icons and pop culture phenoms, we fully get the gist that doo-wop was vitally important to music history, but Wilson and company give us a clearer idea that its purveyors are still pissed—the living ones, anyway.

There’s only so many times you can hear from someone about how they made no money or how the people who came after would never have amounted to anything had Ben E. King never put pen to paper and voice to microphone. Wilson nearly winds up portraying his subjects like whiners, even if it’s well warranted, which it is, and while their pain is more than understandable, a few more celebratory moments might have come in handy.

If the moral thus becomes something about how the record industry is evil, well, we already knew that. If it becomes about how white people

him. Poésy is charming in a certain way, but mainly her character exists to ask about where Marcel is, what Marcel is doing and to protect him and to do things he asks of her, even when she wishes to do otherwise.

Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey, however, has the goods, as per usual. And though her character, a teenaged orphan uprooted repeatedly while fleeing the Nazis, is given precious little to do, she remains one of the most talented young actors working today. Against Eisneberg’s antics, too, she ekes out something akin to actual familial love; it’s written in her eyes. Matthias Schweighöfer, meanwhile, as the infamous Klaus Barbie, proves a capable Nazi, albeit one who is sometimes portrayed as cartoonishly evil. It’s unclear why we need a primer on his deeds when “Nazi=bad” seems the most basic equation.

And though the locations in which Resistance is filmed can be gorgeous, everything else is that pale blue-grey filmmaking view of WWII. It becomes difficult to access sincere emotion for characters so half-baked even as it’s consistently interesting to learn of Marceau’s contributions to the good guys.

Nevertheless, for budding historians (or just those who didn’t know), a deeper look into Marceau’s artistic pursuits—and their oddly beautiful ability to come into play while fleeing fascism—is a noble pursuit. If only Jakubowicz had taken a slightly less mainstream tack, we might’ve had something special or at least a little more memorable. As it stands, it’s mostly interesting and only occasionally dull—a perfectly fine, middle-of-the-road kind of WWII movie that gets the job done. Oh yeah, and Ed

tend to ruin or steal everything, well, we knew that, too. Of course it’s unfair, of course businessmen took advantage, of course these people deserve more recognition. But if the history of doo-wop is writ solely as a cadre of the elderly repeatedly saying how much things sucked…well, then it’s little wonder we’ve since moved on.

Music, of course, ebbs and flows, and people, of course, deserve to be paid for their labors. Streetlight Harmonies does rekindle a love for countless songs we all know (and believe me— you probably know all these songs), but when it comes to providing any new or revelatory information, or even giving us a reason to love those who wrote songs inscribed forever in our collective consciousness, that stuff is unfortunately in short supply.

- SOME STRANGE EDITORIAL CHOICES

If you’ve enjoyed practically any kind of comedy—from sitcoms to Netflix specials to indie movies, shorts or cartoons—over the last decade or so, chances are it might not have been possible without comedian Eugene Mirman.

The voice of Gene from Bob’s Burgers (and, really, so many other things) has had such an intense impact on the alt.comedy world, in fact, that there’s still no telling how far his contributions will reach. But in It Started as a Joke, from filmmakers Julie Smith Clem and Ken Druckerman, we get the tip of the iceberg, learning how Mirman brought together countless standups, writers, DJs, musicians and all-around culture tastemakers through his New York City-based Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, and why it could be one of the most important comedic events you’ve never heard about.

It’s not that comedy hasn’t always existed, rather that Mirman’s contributions came at a time when the old guard was growing stale and the new school was still defining itself. He was an early adopter of video shorts and took prop comedy out of the Carrot Top realm and into

a space more easily described as early offline memes; in a pre-social media world, he gave shape and voice to so many commonplace comedic elements that, at the time, were little more than vaporous concepts.

The number of big time comics who came through Mirman’s festival is almost unbelievable, and we watch so many of them evolve in the short doc over a 10-year period of found footage, behind-the-scenes moments, and during the leadup to 2017’s final festival, the last before Mirman’s wife died of cancer.

Kristen Schaal, Reggie Watts, H. John Benjamin, Michael Showalter, Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, Chris Gethard, Mike Birbiglia, Janeane Garofolo, Jim Gaffigan, John fucking Oliver—anybody who’s anybody either came up through or performed at Mirman’s fest, and Smith Clem and Druckerman interview as many as can fit into their loving look at how Mirman (and countless other comics) ushered in some of the most far-reaching comedy of the last decade.

It’s sheer bliss for comedy nerds set against the ups and downs of Mirman’s own career and personal life. There, things get darker and more real, but even in interviews with his wife at the zenith of cancer, the importance of comedy, especially in the dark times, shines through.

There’s comfort in holding that, and Mirman’s unadulterated honesty—even in how unwittingly he managed to put together the festival—is relatable. It Started as a Joke thus makes the viewer feel like they’re part of something, and isn’t that kind of the point of art in the first place? (ADV)

He has settled in nicely at his foster home and we know that in the right forever home he will do well. He doesn’t care for some male cats, but gets along fine with females.
