OPINION, APRIL 14: “HERE’S AN IDEA”

MARKET IS KING Drew Ford’s letter to the editor proposes something so eminently reasonable it will be embarrassing for all of us if it’s not pursued in earnest. This is not the first shout for affordable housing on the Midtown Campus, but it is a timely attempt to ratchet the issue back to the middle of the table. As the letter said, affordable housing is not going to happen with the current development schemes.

Look at the irreversible monstrosities that are going up or being proposed—giving away well-conceived height restrictions for a mere 10 years of “affordable” housing.

Because our homes are subject to a marketplace (and in America the Market is King), there really is no solution to fair, affordable housing outside of public subsidy.

This is a perfect opportunity for the city to own more public housing to protect its citizens (and workers) from the unreal inflation of “real” estate. I don’t know if it’s that easy.

American laws and practices have for so long favored inflation and rent-seeking, not to mention awful kinds of land development.

But what better time to start? Can a society call itself good if it can’t secure the homes of its people?

Building on the Foundation she built, but also Deputy Superintendent Linda Sink built, and then continuing to work with the team that’s in place. We have a lot of great people in the district, we have a lot of great people in very important positions. And I think it’s about continuing to cultivate what they do and providing the support for them to be successful. Ultimately, that would result in everyone being successful. he big game for Santa Fe Public Schools has a new coach. Larry Chavez, the former associate superintendent for athletics and activities, will become the superintendent July 1.

Listing experience as a principal and secondary teacher, Chavez signed a one-year contract with the district for $150,000 over the weekend. He comes from a family of educators in New Mexico and holds a master’s in special education from Highlands University. Chavez prepares to take over from Veronica García in the wake of a school year defined by relentless uncertainty over schools reopening, unprecedented challenges for families and—from Chavez’s perspective—plenty of learning opportunities. The interview has been edited for space and clarity.

of learning. I remember even discussing this with some of our high school principals and staff—we’ve had students who are straight A’s that regressed academically. It goes from our students who excel to our students who struggle—the learning gaps are there. I think we have to be able to acknowledge them and identify them and make sure that we’re providing those opportunities next year, to try to close them in: Providing enriched activities during the school day and after school hours, doing different hands-on activities to really get them engaged, extended learning time programs is another great option.

There’s a silver lining to every issue and every problem. One thing that I think gets overlooked are all the new skills that our students have developed during the pandemic and the new self-discipline that comes with it. Students have to be structured to be successful online, they have to manage time well. All of these skills are going to translate not only next year, but also for years to come. They can take them with them once they graduate.

Whenever there is a problem, there’s always a solution at the end.

SFR: What lessons from your former position, as the associate superintendent of athletics, activities and school support, do you think will serve you in leading the district?

Larry Chavez: I think some of the lessons that we all learned along the way: how to work as a team, how to listen, how to respect one another and how to collaborate. That’s the essence of being a great leader. I don’t intend on changing who I am or how I operate. And it’s all about listening, because there’s always two sides to this story. Over the past few years, working with curriculum instruction, it really was able to provide me with a well-rounded set of skills and a background of the athletic side, operations, curriculum and instruction.

What aspects of being superintendent would you say you’re most eager to take on?

Continuing the work that Dr. García has in place for us. The foundation that not only

ing able to identify the students who have had that regression this academic year. It’s about having those solutions and those remedies at hand, so we can offer that to those students and those families that need it. It’s not like we’re walking into this blind—we know who’s regressed. We actually have all that data on hand and we’re able to identify individuals or groups of individuals. It’s about the programming that we will offer in order to address those learning gaps moving forward, it’s not going to be resolved in one year. This will be ongoing and this is something that we’re going to have to address for years to come.

What areas of growth for the district are your biggest priorities?

Well, I think the first one is exploring options for our parents next year. This year we gave them the opportunity to attend in person or stay remote. And I think we need to explore those options for next year as well, because we still may have families and students who are afraid of returning to school or may be concerned that in-person learning is not for them.

On the other hand, we have students who have excelled in online learning. And so we need to be able to provide that type of option for our parents to really explore for their students next year. And then again, making sure that we’re promoting and advertising what we do well and what each school offers. So parents know, it’s not a one model for every single school or a one size fits all—that every school has great things going on. We just need to make them known and make families feel welcome back in our schools.

How was your own educational experience? How is it different and similar from what students are experiencing now?

I think the biggest thing is that I didn’t really get on a computer until I was in college. Those technology skills that they’re developing now, we developed later in our educational path. And so I think that’s the biggest change in education is the use of technology. I graduated from Santa Rosa High School in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, and my graduating class was 42. In Santa Fe Public Schools we get class sizes of 30 at times, so my entire senior class almost fit inside one classroom. I think it doesn’t matter where you come from, it doesn’t matter the size of school you attended.

It’s about being driven. It’s about being committed. It’s about being passionate.

And I think those are the unique tools that I bring and that’s what I really, truly believe in.

Hotel owner and elder school both make a play for Immaculate Heart property

erched in the city’s eastern foothills, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat and Conference Center sits in near silence. The coronavirus stopped most activities on the property that’s cradled by the Carmelite monastery, a residential neighborhood of expensive adobes and Museum Hill.

But behind the scenes in recent months, at least two buyers made offers to buy the retreat and conference center property from the struggling Archdiocese of Santa Fe, and a bidding war appears to be taking shape.

The owner of a company based in Austin, Texas, says he has a purchase agreement with the archdiocese to buy the property and turn it into a hotel with a restaurant and bar, which has set off concerns among current tenants and neighbors about noise, a change of pace in the area and proposed rezoning that would be required for such an operation.

A second company has also bid on the property, making the future a bit more uncertain.

Those worried about what would happen if the retreat center took on a commercial bent include David Van Winkle, a board member for the New Mexico Performing Arts Society, which has histor-

ically put on concerts in the chapel there.

“This major change in use will require re-zoning by the City of Santa Fe and a liquor license. There is significant risk in obtaining these authorizations, due to its proximity to religious, educational and residential areas,” Winkle wrote in a letter to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe’s bankruptcy attorneys and trustees on behalf of the society. “The current zoning does not allow for a restaurant and bar, so they would have to have a waiver approved by the Carmelite nuns, Santa Fe Prep, and others, in order to close the purchase.”

About 12 acres of historic buildings, including offices, the chapel, a gym and guest rooms have been on the market as the archdiocese attempts a bankruptcy settlement with hundreds of claimants who say they or their children survived abuse at the hands of priests. The sale of the retreat center is part of a much larger sell-off of other properties, including the St. Francis Cathedral School in downtown Santa Fe. On Feb. 26, the archdiocese and Austin’s Mighty Tai entered into a purchase agreement for $6.4 million for the property, according to court documents.

On March 19, the church filed a motion authorizing the sale. Because the property is in bankruptcy court, a court order signed

by a judge is necessary for a sale to go through after both sides present their case either for or against the purchase.

But the church withdrew that motion April 9, citing a competing bid that “appears to be a higher and better offer” to consider, according to court documents.

The document does not specify what company submitted a competing offer or for how much, and the archdiocese did not reply to requests for comment by presstime.

According to James Stang, a Californiabased attorney who represents a group of survivors and parents of survivors of priest abuse in the bankruptcy case, the other bidder is Modern Elder Academy, which bills itself as a “midlife wisdom school.”

A representative from Elder declined to comment, though this spring the academy bought nearly 2,600 acres of the Saddleback Ranch in the Galisteo Basin outside of Santa Fe, which will be repurposed to house the second MEA campus, a regenerative farm and ranch, and a small residential community, according to a company news release. “[MEA has] undertaken a lot of what I’ll call public relations efforts to convince the archdiocese and us, frankly, that we should support the offer,” Stang tells SFR.

While there is still a purchase agreement between Mighty Tai and the archdiocese, no sale is set in stone yet, according to Jennifer Jenkins, a local land use and project management contractor who is working with the company.

The man behind the Mighty Tai offer is Jack Barron, the founder of Mighty Union, a hotel management company also based in Austin. Barron tells SFR he lived in Santa Fe in the 1980s and 1990s and that he and his wife have bought a house in the City Different and will be back in town by June 1.

Barron says Mighty Tai includes “silent” and “capital” partners and that his company is the “talent.” Mighty Union has four total properties—the retreat center would be the fifth, he says. The company operates The Carpenter Hotel in Austin, restaurant Pepe Le Moko Spirit of 77 in Portland and The Suttle Lodge in Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. Two other properties, one in Honolulu and another in San Antonio, are under renovations to become small hotels.

Barron says there would be no additional building on the property. The company would also allow Santa Fe Workshops, which has had a space on the property for several decades, to remain.

But the company would face rezoning hurdles in front of the City Council if it is ultimately the winning buyer. Using the property as a hotel and restaurant would only happen if officials agree to rezone it for commercial uses, according to Jenkins, including a planned unit development overlay. It’s currently zoned residential.

“Right now there are somewhere between 50 and 60 rooms there, and it’s actually been operating as a retreat center for the past 20 years, which is functionally a hotel,” Barron says. “In essence...we want to run those buildings as a hotel. We’re not going to add any more capacity or any significant capacity. It’s just going to be about the same level of what they can do. We’re just going to hopefully be more successful at it.”

e’ve just passed the oneyear mark since Santa Fe’s big three summer arts ­markets—International Folk Art Market, Traditional Spanish Market and Indian Market—announced there would not be in-person events in 2020. COVID-19 was so new to us at the time, and each event fell in quick succession like dominoes.

At the time, Southwestern Association for Indian Arts board president Thomas A. Teegarden said in a statement that Indian Market’s cancellation was “a devastating decision,” and that 2020 would be “a huge financial blow for a lot of people.”

Multiply that times three, and that’s not even getting into myriad other canceled events, such as the Plaza Bandstand series, the Railyard Summer Concert ­ series, CURRENTS, Lowrider Day, etc., each rippling out into the broader local economy, affecting workers in hotels, food service, retail, the arts and beyond. Even SFR was not immune, and we made the tough call to cancel our annual Best of Santa Fe block party in the Railyard—which coincides with AMP Concerts’ Santa Fe Salutes series of tribute shows for deceased musicians. We had to make that difficult decision again this year.

“It’s been as disappointing to us as it is to everybody else to not be all out there together,” says Sandra Brice, ­ director of events and marketing for the Santa Fe Railyard Community Corporation, which oversees events in the Railyard.

“It’s been difficult to not be meeting up and enjoying our favorite things, like the SFR party, movies in the park, concerts— even just running into each other.”

But now, as of this writing, nearly 57% of New Mexicans have received at least their first COVID-19 vaccine dose, and Santa Fe County is steadily maintaining its turquoise designation within the state’s red-to-green framework, which dictates which types of businesses, institutions and events can reopen and at what capacity. Given that ongoing ­turquoise status, Brice is hopeful for a return to some semblance of normalcy, as are the big three arts markets. Still, this means a nonstop string of potential events on the books in pencil rather than ink. Though events promoters, ­curators,

As vaccinations surge in New Mexico, Santa Fe’s big summer arts markets plan for the best

sound engineers and indeed a­ udiences themselves look forward to once again gathering, a massive asterisk sits beside any possible future happenings: Things are still changing day to day when it comes to COVID-19 and public health orders.

“What’s not apparent is that while it looks like not a lot is going on, it’s an enormous amount of work to hold events,” Brice tells SFR, “to book everything tentatively, go back to cancel some things, save dates for people who keep saying ‘in case,’ and to start these conversations with folks for 2021 about whether we think it’s worth spending the time to put something together.”

Within the state’s turquoise rules, outdoor gatherings top off at 150 people. In a post-COVID world, that sounds like a lot of people, but given previous Santa Fe s­ummer events, it’s a small fraction. Even so, it’s a daunting number, both for organizers and those taking the virus seriously—or ­someone like Brice, who must examine every possible outcome.

“What it seems to be coming down to in terms of large public outdoor events is the challenge of not having clear access points,” she cautions. “That’s what I’m working on now—how to start a return to controllable outdoor events, with temporary fencing, temporary entrances...but I look forward to it, and we’re going to start really seeing a change this year.”

That change can’t come soon enough, particularly for the big three summer arts markets, which not only rely on both locals and tourists, but for visiting artists to be able to travel in and out of the state.

In the case the International Folk Art Market, Traditional Spanish Market and Indian Market, each has been cautiously moving ahead with plans for in-person events, not because any one team is making assumptions about what shape the world would be in by now, or later in the summer, but because each event’s staff must be prepared. Certainly we’ve all grown tired of reading the term “pivot” over the last 13 months, but even as pivoting bore more robust online offerings across the arts commerce sphere, the brass at each market have been uniquely aware that in-person events are where the magic lies.

Outside of Santa Fe’s most famous art markets, the summertime holds ­numerous other events in a normal year. We checked in with organizers of four such popular gatherings to see what they’re planning.

Plaza Bandstand/Railyard Summer Concert Series (Dates TBA) AMP Concerts’ Director of Santa Fe Operations Jamie Lenfestey tells SFR the nonprofit isn’t quite sure where it will land in terms of in-person events this year. Like most organizations, he and Albuquerque head Neal Copperman are just waiting to hear some good news. AMP most recently took over the Plaza Bandstand series from nonprofit Outside In, whose founder David Lescht created the series but tragically died in 2012. Both the nonprofit and the concert series had been run by Michael Delheim since 2013. Ultimately, plans are in motion, but there’s no word just yet.

If health orders continue to relax, if more New Mexicans gain access to their vaccinations, if artists can work out how to safely travel, it becomes ever more clear—these teams need to be ready to go.

“We’re planning an in-person ­market that is somewhat reduced from our normal market, which usually has 21,000 visitors in 22 hours,” says Stuart Ashman, executive director of the International Folk Art Market. “We’re now going to spread it out over two weekends starting

on July 7 through July 11; July 12 and 13 we’ll shut down to reset; then we’ll reopen it July 14 and go to July 18.”

Ashman says the first hurdles are in artists arriving in Santa Fe safely and getting their wares shipped in a timely manner. After that, it’s about overall safety for visitors and logistics. Each weekend will consist of 40 to 50 artists, as opposed to the market’s usual 160 artists over one weekend, and timed ticketing will allow for staggered guest entry. Ideally, Ashman notes, no more than 300 people, including staff, volunteers and artists, will be on Museum Hill’s Milner Plaza at a time.

Tickets allow for two hours of access, and the famed early bird day will become two this year on the Thursday before each weekend. Ashman also says artists will be rapid-tested for COVID-19 at the airport when they arrive and the entire IFAM staff has been training in the Department of Health’s COVID-safe practices.

“All the [trainings] that were available, even in restaurants, retail, entertainment, we were certified in them,” Ashman says.

In 2016, then-mayor Javier Gonzales decreed May 22 would forevermore be known as Lowrider Day in Santa Fe. With health orders making large outdoor gatherings more challenging—particularly when it comes to more than 100 lowriders descending on the Plaza—organizers of previous annual celebrations have upped the party from one day to a full-on month of activities and events at Santa Fe Place mall. “It’s been a little tough to get anything going, but right now what we have planned is a lowrider exhibit with cars, a procession, food vendors and 15-plus artists,” says organizer Casey Montoya. “We’ll have pedal bikes, pedal cars, old-school strollers from the 1950s, and everything is going to be COVID-safe.” Montoya says his small team is paying for any costs out of their own pockets and volunteering all their time. In ­addition to taking over retail space within Santa Fe Place for the artsy offerings, other events will occur in the parking lot. “And it’s all free,” Montoya adds.

CURRENTS (Friday, June 18-Sunday, June 27) After learning that the virtual world was a great fit for its particular brand of new media, CURRENTS co-Executive and Artistic Directors Frank Ragano and Mariannah Amster tell SFR they’ll be leaning into online VR and AR ­elements from here on out, but that doesn’t mean 2021 is a bust for in-­person elements. CURRENTS has partnered with the Center for Contemporary Arts for an admittedly smaller but no less intriguing real-life festival in 2021. “It’s going to be a smaller event...but it’s going to be beautiful,” Amster says. “People should realize it’s going to be a different kind of experience—not counting flat panel video work, there are 12 installation pieces, a performance and we have some work outside.” As for maintaining the virtual side, Ragano says it only ups the possibilities. “The whole virtual side has exploded,” he says. “It brought out this creative flood.”

97th Annual Burning of Zozobra (Friday, Sept. 3) “What we’ve decided to do is three contingencies,” says Zozobra Events Chair Ray Sandoval. “Number one would be a replay of last year’s virtual event—which we don’t think is likely because the state has done such a great job with COVID-19 and vaccinations. Number two would be a hybrid event with a limited crowd; and number three would be based on pods, like with your family or groups of 10.” Ultimately, however, Sandoval is optimistic about an in-person night when we burn Old Man Gloom in 2021. “We can quickly adapt to whatever the health order is,” Sandoval adds. “We’re looking at a lot of different things, but we have a lot of surprises planned.” 2021 heralds 1980s style in the ongoing Zozobra Decades Project, which finds the embodiment of the sadsies embracing the style of a different decade yearly.

IFAM will also implement a new ­ p ayment system this year—booths manned by staff who will accept only credit cards or checks—and artists who can’t travel will have the option to ship works to Santa Fe where market staff dubbed Artist Associates will serve as proxy sellers. Ashman even says the organization has brought on Dr. Diane Friedman to work as a safety monitor during market hours.

“We’re being very cautious,” he says, “because things have developed in a positive way. Of course we intend to follow all the state and federal guidelines for the kind of event we’re producing.”

Executive Director Jennifer Berkley, who took the reins last May after working with SWAIA and during a particularly grueling stretch of COVID-19, says the Spanish Colonial Arts Society, which oversees the market, is in better shape than it has been in years. With renovations to the flagship museum near Museum Hill, loosening health orders and New Mexico’s promising vaccine rollout, she’s feeling good about resuming the market this year on July 24 and 25.

“If there’s a blessing in disguise about everything, it’s that it really forced downtime, which the organization hadn’t had since its founding,” Berkley tells SFR. “When you have that kind of downtime, you have a chance to take a hard look at what you do and how you do it—the time to refresh, revise, recalibrate. We’re just trying to remain as flexible as we can.”

Part of the flexibility, Berkley says, is in understanding how guidelines from the city and state could potentially change at any moment. Like any potential upcoming in-person event, masks and social

distancing will be the norm at Traditional Spanish Market, but, Berkley says, “It’s not just about commerce and selling stuff— how do we have a heritage event in the spirit of the past when we’re constrained by crowd numbers, health, etc.?”

Much of the answer lies in whether artists are willing to sell their works in a public space, and the Spanish Colonial Arts Society surveyed all of its 2020 juried artists to gauge how they felt in the leadup to 2021.

“Some are ready to go, some are not,” Berkley explains. “We’re working with them to fashion something, but it’s also hard to give a direct answer because these are artists who spent the last year working in a different space, not making art like they used to....It isn’t just about tourists and staying in hotels, it’s about whether these artists are fully able and ready to do this.”

Yvonne Gillespie, director of finance and administration for the society and, as of this year, Traditional Spanish Market lead, says she’s gearing up to get to the ­bottom of that very question.

SWAIA’s NDN World uses Second Life architecture to turn Indian Market into an interactive game-like experience.

Virtual Indian Market is exactly what it sounds like, but SWAIA’s NDN World, an interactive and 3D-rendered version of Indian Market built upon the architecture of the Second Life video game and accessible via computer, continues to be an absolute stunner. By allowing visitors to create controllable avatars and interact with booths, social events and gatherings in a game-like setting, SWAIA not only embraced the future of arts interactivity, it leveled the playing field for those who can’t travel to Santa Fe, even in the best of times. Additionally, the organization’s online sales platform helped soften the blow of a canceled market and, according to Peone, will remain a permanent part of the nonprofit’s operations.

“I just feel like the digital space is our

future,” she notes, “but it would never deter us from our actual Santa Fe Indian Market. I think [digital elements] will just support and promote the market, and that’s going to be a necessary thing as we go into August.”

SWAIA is moving forward with plans for an in-person market Aug. 21 and 22.

The logistics for that, however, are anything but simple. In the coming weeks, Peone says, there are countless things to consider, but in a market first, the event will be ticketed. Like IFAM, this gives SWAIA more control over how many visitors come to market, and for how long. Ticket prices have not yet been announced, but Peone says just knowing SWAIA can produce the market is a major relief. Still, in a way, it’s almost like selling

“I have to say we have been extremely fortunate and definitely very proactive in pivoting,” says SWAIA Executive Director Kim Peone (Colville Confederated Tribes/Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians). “I would say that from an ED perspective, on a scale from 1 to 10, we hit it out of the park with Virtual Indian Market and NDN World.”

“For me, it’s about how many artists can make it, and we’ll start from there,” she tells SFR. “But I’ve been talking with those artists and our regular contractors and vendors, and everyone has been amazing.

We’ve met with the city to walk the streets [around the Plaza] and see about what’s mandated. We’re getting a good picture of what it’s going to take.”

Gillespie says that, as of now, an in-­ person Spanish Market will happen. It’ll take at least 100 artist booths, though unlike previous years, sellers won’t be allowed to double up. The canvas booth walls will provide enough social distance between artists. Visitors will have to police themselves—as is the law anyway.

Gillespie envisions one-way pathways, plenty of temporary barriers and timed entrances. Assuming visitors remain patient and don’t get weird, she says, that should be enough.

“I do want people to know that we are going to have changes,” Gillespie adds.

“We still want to keep it the same market we’ve always had, but we’ll be doing temperature checks [on artists and staff ], everyone will have to be masked—but we’ll also have exhibits on the different classes of artist. We’re going deeper into education; that’s a direction we know we have to go.”

tickets to the Plaza, which will certainly come with challenges. City spokesman David Herndon tells SFR it’s too early to tell how ticketing will work.

“There are still hard questions to answer, and we’re still needing guidance from the state,” Peone explains. “Do we take temperatures? Do we do contact tracing? Crowd control? What are the access points? All of these things will dictate a different look for the market this year.”

In 2020, nearly half the artists who had juried into Indian Market showed virtually. In 2021, those accepted artists will automatically be accepted to market. For an event that takes up more than a square city block around the Plaza, as well as space in the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, making it work safely puts a lot of onus on visitors. Like every public gathering, Indian Market will require masks and social distancing. Still, Peone cites a 2018 study from the city’s Occupancy Tax Advisorry Board which found Indian Market brings in roughly $165 million to New Mexico’s economy annually. That’s a hard number to ignore.

“It’s not necessarily only about day-by-day changes around here, but it’s certainly health order by health order,” says city tourism head Randy Randall.

“The free-for-all events we’ve had in the past, where people can come and go and there’s no restrictions on numbers? They will not be allowed as they have been, so we’re working on plans as to how we as a city can help put on these events while controlling access and numbers and maximizing what they can do, but, of course, being very careful to have safe events that fit within state guidance.”

Randall says the big three markets are a major feather in Santa Fe’s tourism cap, though without in-person events in 2020, city tourism was able to hold onto 70% of its critical expenditure from March to June. This means a bolstered marketing plan that Randall calls “make your plans now for a future trip.” The majority of that campaign will be aimed at neighboring states.

“Our mission is to remind people we’re a great place to come,” Randall says. “The city would very much like to have these markets come back as quickly as they can—we also want to do it for the preservation of those nonprofits [that plan and execute the markets].”

“The whole point is to get the event rolling,” Gillespie says of Traditional Spanish Market. “This is about the art, the living artists, the traditions. Maybe it’s just about our heart and soul.”

The same could be said for any of the big three.

Local nonprofit Southwest Roots Music is leaning into Earth Day celebrations with a series of totally free and totally impressive and unique YouTube concert videos from big musical names like Michael Franti, Ani DiFranco and Ordinary Elephant—plus lesser-known artists like musician-activist Sofia Jannok and local heroes Jono Manson, Joe West, Laura Manzanares and others. “We approached artists who are already in the spirit of what we’re looking for, and we’ve asked them not only to play, but to talk about what’s important to them,” says Southwest Roots Music Director Michael Koster. “So between songs, they’re talking about electric cars and experiences with sustainability.” As streaming and video have become the live music norm and musicians create performance videos that stream across the country, Southwest Roots Music’s Earth Day vids are one-ofa-kind and only available through the organization’s YouTube channel. Two-by-Six The Santa Fe Playhouse had already paid for the rights to playwright Steve Yockey’s Reykjavík when the pandemic hit and, in the 16-ish months that have passed since the organization performed something live, things have obviously changed for live performance. But now, under the direction of consummate Santa Fe theater pro Kent Kirkpatrick, the oldest operating theater west of the Mississippi has culled one scene from the show dubbed “Tongues,” which will be performed within form & concept gallery’s ongoing Family Room exhibit.

“The space is LGBTQ artists from across the country who were invited to make objects or images about the importance of queer family of choice and domestic place,” Kirkpatrick tells SFR. “Part of the original concept was that the room would be a place for performance, but of course, the pandemic shut us all down.”

And now, with health orders relaxing, Playhouse Artistic Director Robyn Rikoon worked with Kirkpatrick to select one scene from the show to perform.

“Tongues” is the story of two young men new to each other, very much in love, and dealing with how much of themselves to reveal to someone new.

Kikrpatrick and Rikoon tapped actors Gregory J. Fields and Garrett Young to tackle the roles, each a member of Santa Fe nee Chicago theater troupe Exodus, which relocated to town in the midst of the pandemic.

“The gift is that they’re both great actors, and both very well-trained,” Kirkpatrick says. “Truthfully, it’s only a

16-minute play, but it’s a strong piece of writing and they got to the guts of the piece quickly. I’ve told them as artists and creators to just trust the text, to explore it with the audience. It’s been wonderful to see them sink into that.”

“Tongues” makes use of Family Room like it’s one of the cast’s apartment.

Limited to only six at a time, the audience becomes an interactive piece of the ­puzzle, and Kirkpatrick says they’re encouraged to move about the room during the show. Thus far, he says, they’ve crammed in roughly 96 patrons across each performance day’s four shows— roughly the same as a full house at the Playhouse’s De Vargas Street auditorium.

It’s a new way of working made pertinent by public health, but one Kirkpatrick says has revealed powerful lessons for both himself and his actors.

“It makes me think about theater in a completely different way,” he explains.

“The actors become part of the art in a different way than they do onstage or onscreen, where there’s distance or ­separation from the audience. It’s been fascinating for me to watch and ponder the way this story reflects and has a conversation with the art in the room.”

aying civil rights have come to New Mexico feels a bit absurd—such rights are supposed to be bestowed upon everyone at birth, but I say it in a legal sense, referring to the struggle of vulnerable populations. It’s worth tentatively affirming.

Call me easily impressed, naïve, or optimistic (you won’t be the first), but I have been inspired by several measures that were successfully enacted during the ­recent New Mexico Legislature, the most prominent among them named the New Mexico Civil Rights Act. The m ­ easures therein all relate to enhancing a cooperative society. And although an important bill meant to stymie predatory lending in the state failed (Democrats will hopefully push it again next year), the Legislature ultimately delivered a civics lesson that, boiled down, effectively says making existence—and, consequently, coexistence— easier is a positive good. There has already been a great deal written about these bills while they were being debated, and it shouldn’t be hard to see their positive benefits. These strike me as self-­evident, but I would like to take this space to affirm their civic virtue.

Lawmakers enacted measures that guarantee paid sick leave, pave the way for universal pre-K childcare and establish the right to die for the terminally ill.

Recreational cannabis was legalized in a special session, plaintiffs’ rights were expanded and, thankfully, New Mexicans can finally sue police officers for civil rights violations in state court. That last one opens the door for judges elected in our state to decide how expansive our rights under the New Mexico Constitution—rather than

­relying on appointed federal judges.

Sick workers and parents have finally been recognized for having a political identity with a special grievance—and don’t laugh over cannabis users’ civic right to get high. It paves the way toward dismantling the system by which citizens are excessively penalized for minor drug crimes.

One of the more publicized of the new measures, however, is the Civil Rights Act which, in part, deals with suing police ­officers in a time that has been marked by a string of police killings, more of which have consistently been revealed by civilian cell phone videos and bodycam footage. We live in the wake of the killing of George Floyd (whose killer Derek Chauvin was convicted as this issue went to print) and, more recently, the killing of Daunte Wright, also in Minnesota, by a cop who claims to have confused a Taser with a handgun.

Whether you feel pro-cop or skeptical about law enforcement, the public outcry against these slayings has reached a fever pitch. Among the villians in the eyes of those pushing for reform: qualified immunity, a legal doctrine that has evolved

over decades in the federal system that makes successfully suing cops for on-duty misconduct nearly impossible—unless the plaintiff can show a case that’s pretty much identical.

You won’t find qualified immunity in any statute books.

It was created from whole cloth and bolstered by mostly conservative judges.

The effect has been to limit folks’ access to justice.

“The New Mexico civil rights bill won’t end qualified immunity federally,” says Barron Jones, a legal strategist for the New Mexico ACLU, “but it will protect plaintiffs from having to face it in [state] District Court.”

Forbiding qualified immunity on a state level shortens the gap between courtroom justice and public outcry, and I hope it inspires a national trend, but the Civil Rights Act also has other applications. It gives New Mexicans previously limited to federal courts the authority to file discrimination suits against public bodies for monetary damages of up to $2 million in district courts. Jones points out that while

there are numerous state courthouses, there are only three federal courts in the state.

“Your civil rights shouldn’t depend on where you live,” he says. “Your ability to file a discrimination suit shouldn’t depend on possibly driving 15 hours to a courthouse.”

Of course, the list of changes within the Civil Rights Act aren’t perfect, but it’s still a tilt in a leftwing direction. But why is this happening? It’s essential to trace the lines.

In New Mexico, where police shoot people at rates far higher than in nearly any other state, the lines stretch back—way back.

Civil rights are almost always linked to another phenomenon: protest. Let’s face it, we’re seeing the positive upshots of a year characterized by sharp critique of national social policies during the COVID-19 crisis, the dearth of social services and civil rights, and street protests by determined activists from Black Lives Matter and other groups. We’re getting a glimpse into why these protests were worth it and, hopefully, we have begun to appreciate a certain indelible relationship.

Periods of protest are usually noted for exacerbating tensions, but we must consider that they often flare up in response to tensions that have become unbearable.

Police protest has a long, proud history in New Mexico. The Civil Rights Act wouldn’t exist without activism that long preceded Floyd’s death beneath Chauvin’s knee.

I certainly do not encourage violence or pointless chaos (when this happens), but we should understand that vociferous protest cannot be disentangled from civil rights. Let’s begin to view progressive legislative policy and conscious social protest like a two-sided coin. Protests will occur nationwide again, but when they do, think about the positives that may follow.

We’re in Stir-Fry Heaven Anthony’s Grill is the next great Santa Fe take-out joint

hen you talk to restauranteur James Anthony Moore, you’ll note he’s a humble guy. So it’s natural that Anthony’s Grill (1622 St. Michael’s Drive, 560-8889) opened rather quietly in the St. Michael’s Village West shopping center, tucked away between Annapurna’s World Vegetarian Café and rob and charlie’s bike shop. It’s a minute space with a handful of two-seat tables with a safe, suburban-esque decor like you see in Weck’s. It’s wholesome.

And the unassuming nature is part of the appeal, like Moore himself—who left Oklahoma for Albuquerque 14 years ago to work as a supervisor for Hayashi Japanese Steakhouse. Today, Anthony’s Grill is one of the many pandemic projects formed in Santa Fe’s restaurant scene as traditional in-person dining shuttered across the state last year. When Hayashi temporarily closed following public health orders, Moore wanted to stay busy.

In August, Anthony’s Grill opened to the public.

“I had a lot of idle time,” he tells SFR, “and I drew up a plan. What if I could do the same thing [as Hayashi] as a take-out

and delivery concept? Serving something good, hot and fresh during such a time, and making it affordable for everyone, of course.”

Whereas Asian fusion options are numerous in Albuquerque, Moore saw a void that needed filling in Santa Fe, and one that would cater heavily to the local market. Much of Anthony’s Grill’s menu is gluten-free (minus the fried foods) and does not contain MSG, giving customers a chance to build their own Mongolian-style stir-fry without having to worry about the chemical stuff. Moore plotted a huge menu as well—all told, options add up to over 100 different possibilities across protein and vegetable choices like beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, tofu, squash, baby corn and bean sprouts. Try to choose between Anthony’s 10 different sauces, and you might find yourself haunted by what you didn’t choose. Mongolian, sweet and sour, red chili—they’re all there, among others, and they enhance abundant stir-fry options and more entree-style dishes like fried catfish and chicken wings, plus unexpected sides like hush puppies and fried okra. Moore made room for classic Americanized Asian foods, too, with crowd favorites like orange chicken and General Tso’s chicken.

“A lot of people love the catfish and fries and fried okra, and the wings,” he says when asked what’s most popular, “but I really like the stir-fry with all the different sauces. You can get a different flavor every time.”

For our part, we tried the crunchy chicken stir-fry with broccoli and a teriyaki sauce ($12.95), and a large stir-fry platter of chicken, grilled onions and mushrooms with fresh garlic sauce on a bed of lo mein ($15.95), still hot when we came to pick it up. The crunchy chicken held onto its namesake even after the teriyaki sauce was glazed over it. Seasoned to near-perfection and soft within the crust, it met brilliantly with the sauce for the right kind of tang with a balance of subtle sweetness. The lo mein never became soggy even as it waited for pick-up and through eating, and its garlic sauce partner wasn’t overly reliant on oil.

Frankly, I didn’t even taste the oil in any of the dishes­—no easy task, particularly in the high-volume, fast-paced takeout game, and the garlic sauce tasted like— get this—real garlic, not that gross fake powdery soupy stuff! The teriyaki and garlic were both complementary rather than overpowering and, all told, nothing from Anthony’s tastes drenched in salt or fat. And our dishes kept well. After all, what Asian-American takeout joint is worth its salt if you can’t get at least one leftover session out of the experience?

And then there are the apple egg rolls, something I’ve never heard of, but felt curious to try just for the novelty.

Think of an apple pie that somehow feels and tastes as if it were rolled and fried, though rather than falling into the experimentally daunting world of fair food, it leans entirely on the apple’s flavors and sweetness with dashes of cinnamon.

Moore lists these an an appetizer, though they could be a great little dessert if you haven’t found yourself stuffed from the main course.

And that’s only a few items into the menu. Anthony’s Grill has tapped into the very core of what we want or need from food service in times of crisis—like a pandemic. Moore’s workflow is nofuss, fast and easily accessible with no big hubbub or demanding crowds, and there’s ample parking. When leaving the house becomes a risk, ease of use, quality of life and plenty of parking become huge deals. It’s proven popular for Moore, who tells SFR he’s been seeing plenty of repeat customers since he opened last summer.

“I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for the community,” he says. “Without their support, this wouldn’t even be possible.”

Irish films almost always have a leg up on the competition. Someone speaks and we Americans go “Aww! This is so cute!” Such is Boys From County Hell, director Chris Baugh’s sophomore feature.

In an Irish village which lives off a Roswelltype reputation for inventing the modern vampire (and which simply won’t let you forget Bram Stoker was born in Ireland), tension is afoot.

Historical burial mounds right outside the village are set to be destroyed by a construction gang eager to open space for a highway. But unleashed from beneath the mounds lies the terror that inspired Stoker’s Dracula, and—yeah, you know where this is going.

Charming is the right word to use, mostly because it’s Irish; fans of Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead will feel right at home (and yes, we know Ireland isn’t England). Here, though, Boys From County Hell’s comedy mostly comes from

One would suspect 1980s South Africa isn’t high on any list of time-travel destinations.

Director Oliver Hermanus’ Moffie thankfully doesn’t drench us in revisionist nostalgia that’s all the rage in queer filmmaking these days. At the height of the South African border wars, the apartheid-governed country drafts all men over the age of 16 into the armed forces—including Nick (Kai Luke Brummer), who’s thrown into a dehumanizing boot camp that makes middle school PE class look inviting.

Nick’s homosexuality is more a backdrop in the story. The boot camp ordeals are violent and hard to watch, so much so that the actual border wars feel moot in comparison.

Meanwhile, per the rules of queer cinema, Nick’s blossoming relationship with his fellow recruit Stassen (Ryan de Villiers) is there—and it’s not. The connection comes suddenly and redirects just as quickly, detailing how the South African society of the time was possibly made up of men who saw emotions as foreign and confusing entities.

The central critique of South Africa holds firm throughout—apartheid was destructive not merely for those it oppressed, but for those on top who surrendered humanity for power. And

deadpan realism—from vampire-zombies who emerge and go for the kill, and from living characters yelling expletives who spend most of the 90 minutes fleeing chaos and bickering.

Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders) steps lively into this otherwise average product, his expressive eyes alone providing much-needed sympathy.

It’s ultimately granola to an otherwise bland but filling yogurt, if you will. There’s a great concept at play, primarily the destruction of heritage— in this case, small mounds worshipped by the small-town residents. Destroy cultural memory at your peril, for who knows what terrors are unleashed by such action? In a nation often strained by losing itself and desiring modernity, this thematic heart is heavy-handed and still underused and wobbling. Boys wants to be a classic

it’s not just the military. Hermanus’ film goes to great lengths showcasing how the struggle exists in every aspect of South African life, constructing a society of parents unable to express love and children baffled by the very concept.

Moffie can thus be read both as a classic queer story and coming-of-age tale, but to see it as ­simply one or the other would be to miss the point. Queer people are less defined by romantic attractions and more by the societies that shape them. Don’t go into Moffie hoping for escapist cinema. But if you’re in a “destroy the patriarchy by psychoanalyzing stupid men” mood, you’re on the right track here.

Like an indie, queer, art house-leaning Full Metal Jacket, the film becomes an ­anxiety-riddled experience and succeeds in diagnosing the trickle-down effects of a societal foundation which seemingly exists on self-inflated superiority. (RG) VOD, NR, 104 min.

You’d think at a certain point Hollywood itself would grow sick of ignoring new ideas and/ or cinematic properties hitting the big screen (and, thanks to COVID-19, the small screen), but when it comes to Godzilla vs. Kong, we’ll

Despite sacrificing its stronger elements, it’s still an immensely entertaining film where it’s safe to forget the characters’ names. Come for the goofs and stay for the actually impressive gore props and monster make-up. There’s great dialogue, passable acting and a well-trodden path.

Is that really such a bad thing? Streaming service Shudder still proves willing to take chances on what it’ll show, too, and remains about the best place to go for movie scares.

just direct you to a text from a friend who also watched this thing on HBO Max over the weekend: “This movie feels like it was written by a MadLib.” Some spoilers follow, but it doesn’t really matter.

Indeed, when we rejoin King Kong following 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, he’s now living it up in some corner of the island paradise, only, uh-oh—it’s actually a super-advanced simulation program a la Star Trek‘s holodeck.

But he knows it, so he smashes stuff. He also has a tight butt for some reason. Anyway, turns out Kong built up an affinity for a little girl from the island who has been teaching him sign language like he’s Amy from Congo. Like MadLibs, the ultimate narrative of the piece feels pointless; like MadLibs, the end product feels like a joke.

Elsewhere, Godzilla is kicking it in the ocean, but decides to attack humanity, even though he was buddy-buddy with humans in 2019’s King of the Monsters. He particularly likes Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things, who doesn’t buy the attack and wonders aloud why he would “flash an intimidation display,” as if she’s some kind of giant lizard behavioral specialist. Spoiler alert: The Apex corporation tricked Godzilla, and Brown’s character joins forces with a podcast host who works for said corporation (but only to dig up dirt; Brian Tyree Henry) and a friend from New Zealand to

whom she’s very mean (Julian Dennison).

And so it comes to pass that the humans decide Kong is their friend, that Godzilla needs to get real and that it’s vital to get that great ape to the center of the planet where, for some other baffling reason, there’s a whole stinking ecosystem full of fantastic beasts (and, somehow, a sun-like light source). See, that’s where Kong is from and that’s where he keeps this totally bitchin’ weapon he made from Godzilla spines or something. Good lord.

You may be enticed, during the heat of a Kong/Godzilla slug-fest, to think about how this movie isn’t so bad. Fight that feeling, because no matter how many cities they level or sci-fi things they engage with or Godzilla spine weapons they brandish, even the least studious film fan simply must feel on an instinctual level that this is trash of the highest caliber.

This is the movie that gets made when some glad-handing focus group schmuck pulls together a group of complete assholes in a middle America mall someplace to ask what they think should h ­ appen. No slick CGI or neon-festooned streets of Hong Kong or callbacks to the yesteryear characters from the Godzilla periphery can save this dreck. Stoned folks will probably really feel it. Everyone else should just pop on 2016’s Shin Godzilla to see how it’s really done. (Alex De Vore) HBO Max, PG-13, 113 min.

JUNIPER was surrendered to SFAS when his owner passed away in 2020. He was subsequently adopted only to be returned when he was diagnosed with early diabetes.

We believe he was fed only dry food, which likely caused the diabetes. JUNIPER is a sweet and social cat, who gets along with other cats. He is easy to test glucose and administer insulin. Given his age, we are hoping that over time with a lowcarb wet food diet, he will go into remission.

Organize your room. Clean your mirror and laptop. Lie in the sunshine. Become the person you would ideally fall in love with. Walk with a straight posture. Stretch your body.

Challenge yourself to not judge or ridicule anyone for a whole day. Have a luxurious shower with your favorite music playing. Remember your dreams. Fantasize about the life you would lead if failure didn’t exist.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran author bell hooks (who doesn’t capitalize her name) has a nuanced perspective on the nature of our pain.
