AGGRAVATING ABSURDITY I’m a serious amateur gardener and orchardist who has fairly equally patronized the locals—Agua Fria, Payne’s, Newman’s, and Plants of the Southwest—over the 26 years that I’ve lived here. But well beyond my personal experience, I feel great sympathy for the many New Mexicans who grow much of their own food. Now, at the beginning of the growing season, are they forced to buy their seeds, plants and trees from the big boxes or from out-of-state companies? If growing healthy food isn’t vital to our existence, what is?

This absurdity is aggravated by scanning the governor’s list of “essential” businesses, which includes fracking for oil and gas where I’m sure the oilfield workers practice adequate social distancing...There is no reason why local nurseries cannot regulate the number of customers at any one time as do other businesses.

WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT I blew it. I should’ve gone to Newman’s for the start to our vegetable garden but went to Home Depot for lumber instead.

Now Newman’s and all the nurseries are closed, while Home Depot remains open, even though most employees go maskless and at least one of them thinks “masks don’t help because the virus isn’t airborne,” which is the kind of bad information and behavior that helped get us into this mess in the first place.

Now we have to live with these drastic measures for a while, but such measures can still be done well—closing nurseries doesn’t seem to buy us any more protection from ourselves. More people will line up outside big box stores for their “garden centers,” forcing customers into fewer locations. I’d feel much safer going to Newman’s than Home Depot, anyway, but closing a few nurseries doesn’t improve our circumstances at this point. What non-compliant people will do at nurseries they will do at Home Depot. We need masks, distance, clean hands, mutual respect. And nurseries with a nice breeze blowing through them.

I am an attorney licensed in Ohio, but have resided in New Mexico for 6 years now. I would be willing to take on certain cases—and I believe there are other professionals like me—if there were a sound program to facilitate such work. Why not admit qualified attorneys who are licensed in other states for limited purposes in New Mexico (rather than licensing non-lawyers), provide them, though the law school or bar association, with training in the areas where access to justice is most acute, and then permit them to perform legal work in those areas where it is most needed? This solution—as opposed to those in the report or the article—could be implemented within months at less cost.

ALLOW OUT-OF-STATE Potential resources should not be wasted by limiting consideration to “young” lawyers.

New Mexico could likely do much to alleviate its “lawyer deficit” problem by lowering the bar for New Mexico licensure of out-of-state attorneys (maybe those in “good standing” in their “home” states, with at least 10 years of experience and no professional discipline or at least no serious professional discipline), and ensuring membership in the New Mexico bar does not require actual full-time residence in the state...This would permit attorneys from other states to practice also in New Mexico, and might go far toward attracting attorneys who would like to scale down or “semi-retire” to relocate their practices and residences to New Mexico...

Some pretty worthless institutions of higher learning have successfully established online higher education. Why doesn’t New Mexico establish online legal education opportunities which would render graduates eligible to take the New Mexico bar, and which would ultimately be free if the student (i) is ultimately admitted to the bar, and (ii) commits to practice in the state for at least 2 or 3 years after admission. The suggestion

creates some problems re ABA accreditation (which should not be required to practice in New Mexico only—but will make their online New Mexico degree less “portable” to other states—not necessarily a bad thing if you want to keep them in New Mexico).

THIS IS STUPID The parking lots at the trailheads are full of cars, many with out-of-state tags. If the cars aren’t social distancing, you can be sure the people aren’t either. Why endanger our first responders to rescue a lost hiker right now?

This is stupid. If we’re going to close down, just do it! Priority one is safety on every possible level.

POO ALERT As a Santa Fean who appreciates the beauty of Santa Fe and easy access to the outdoors, I have been noticing an excessive amount of dog waste on the more frequented trails near where I live. This is a friendly reminder that there is a city ordinance which requires pet owners to pick up their dog waste (even if you are on a city trail).

In this time where we are having to come together more than ever as a community, this is another way for us to consider others.

And for me, I’ve just been doing my homework and I honestly feel stressed with all of it. Because I have other duties to do around the house as well. And it seems as every time I wake up in the morning there’s a new assignment.

As COVID-19 spreads within Native lands, Santa Fe Indian School students report

taying at home looks slightly different for everybody. As Northern New Mexico’s pueblos and tribes close their borders and roads to outsiders —and even tribal members that live off reservation—in a bid to stop the wildfire that is COVID-19, life continues inside.

Journalism students who haven’t seen classrooms at the Santa Fe Indian School since early March sent dispatches from their homes across the state about life during COVID-19 from the first days back with their families through recent days, when virus hot spots in San Felipe and Zia pueblos sparked.

Life goes on in some ways—caring for animals, spending time with family, homework, prayer. But other things are different, probably for a long time—canceled dances and religious ceremonies, empty streets and new worries over elders becoming ill with the virus.

Luciano Coriz Santa Fe March 30 When I go out to get groceries or just go out to my front yard to get some fresh air, people are still out and about as if this pandemic does not exist. I still see older people walking their dogs, going for jogs, and a lot of cars on the road.

Some signs of spring that I can see are: trees are becoming more green, birds are chirping at 7:00 in the morning, and the sun is shining without any clouds in sight. While we are quarantined we can8

not enjoy these things we see outside, but once this pandemic goes away we will be able to go outside and enjoy the beautiful changes Mother Earth has made for us.

Since school has let out, the main thing I have been doing is spending as much time as possible with my grandma during this time of crisis. This pandemic has led us to be in quarantine and this has led to boredom. The main thing is I’m trying to keep up with my assignments and stay in touch with family and friends.

Owen Celestine Acoma Pueblo March 15 Today I went on a run and after that run I worked out. There is not much to do when you’re stuck in a house all day. So I’ve been trying to do the huge amount of homework my teachers gave me. Later on today I’ll go check on the horses and finish the night off with a movie…

In my community of Acoma Pueblo, people are still out and about. They are still going to the track and walking while others are still chopping wood to feed their fire stoves. Young boys are still going hunting for birds and rabbits that we use for traditional doings.

What’s going on in my life is that I’m continuing my life like it’s normal. I’m still doing my chores and taking care of my cattle. Lately I’ve been able to speak my language with my family. Most of the time I’m bored at home with no one to talk to.

March 16 Today I made breakfast for my dad’s family. We had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes. After breakfast I immediately started my homework...The thing that happened today in Grants (a small town west of Acoma) is that there were little kids playing outside and people going for walks with their dogs. I typically

The employees are being told to work.

Ditch cleaning is canceled since the “ditch has been made with concrete, no need to do ditch cleaning.” Over the past couple days home I haven’t seen any people anywhere, it’s like the pueblo is vacant…

However in town (Española) people are still going in and out of stores and driving around as if nothing is happening.

symptoms are advised to not enter the clinic and to stay in their vehicles to be sent to the hospital.

The worry over elders is that they should stay home and meals are being sent out to the elders. The Community School tried giving out breakfast and lunch to the students and children, but I heard there isn’t enough food to be distributed.

Church is still going on but the priest advises that “If you are sick stay home, don’t take the effort to come to church risking other people’s safety.”

March 18 Being home since Thursday it’s been nothing but cleaning while everyone is at work, sleeping till 12, just driving around to visit my grandma or dad, or watching Netflix all night. This time off from school is really giving me time to keep in touch with my family, since I only have two days to spend with them when I go back to the dorms. I am really grateful that I can spend time with her even though I just waste time playing cards, dominoes, and drinking tea or coffee all day.

Now, spending time with my dad is really different, all we do is stay home and binge watch our favorite Netflix show and eat all day. To me this break from school is really very relaxing even through chores and literally nothing important is what I call “relaxing.”

Kelsey Rosetta Kewa Pueblo March 17 Here in Kewa, people are still out and about but not as much as usual. There’s no signs of spring in my home community, except that ditch cleaning occurred last week. Things are pretty normal around Kewa. The library is still open but the Kewa school has closed. We don’t have a casino but the church and Senior Center have stayed open.

There’s worry about the elders.

Tribal officials sent home a newsletter to all the homes in the pueblo regarding the safety of the community and encouraging everyone to continue to wash their hands and take other precautions.

People are keeping their spirits up by continuing on with their daily tasks, praying, having a curing, and hoping for the best. I go out to go do tasks at the field with my dad and feed the farm animals we have. Neither my pueblo nor my household has been quarantined.

I feel nervous for the elders and my parents especially. My mom is still traveling to Santa Fe to make money by sell-

ing jewelry at the downtown Plaza. My parents are around their late 40s and I want everyone to be safe and healthy.

I’m glad to be away from school so I can spend more time with my family, pets, and work at home. I feel somewhat confident that my community will overcome this pandemic with no sickness spreading within.

San Felipe Pueblo April 6 After a week of the virus, things have been going a little crazy. Numbers of cases keep going up and up. My mom, dad, and I left Algondones to visit my brother in Rio Rancho, and as we were heading back home the roads were totally empty.

It was like a ghost town in a scary movie. It was dark and only one or two cars passed us, as I was looking out the window I was very shocked only because never in my life have I been on the road with it being so dead. The only lights we came across were the street lights.

This was around the time that the governor stated we are all on some kind of lockdown and wanted all of us to stay home. I was looking out the window towards the Walmart store and it was completely empty. I’ve never seen the Walmart parking lot so dead, because it’s Walmart and Walmart is never dead.

I never really believed that people have been going crazy over tissue, paper towels or any types of cleaning materials, especially hand sanitizers or the clorox wipes, until two days before I made the last trip to Walmart. Everything was completely gone. I still question why some people would be going crazy over the materials. I understand that, day by day, cases have been growing and the virus has been making its way through the entire world, but I personally feel that people should shop regularly and be mindful of others. I really think everything is crazy.

We have recently heard that we have been getting some cases around San Felipe Pueblo and it is getting more and more scary every day. I have never thought something invisible, from another place, far, far away would travel all the way here.

Now things have been getting very strict. They have canceled all Easter activities and traditional dances, they have cancelled all Easter egg events, family events and we have a curfew set from 8pm to 8am. People are not allowed to go to the soccer fields or baseball fields, they have blocked everything off until April 30.

SF County Jail Inmate has Coronavirus First case reported in the jail, but conflicting information on how the inmate contracted COVID-19

A

n inmate at the Santa Fe County jail has tested positive for the new coronavirus, marking the second person behind bars in New Mexico with a confirmed case of the respiratory illness.

A Santa Fe County spokeswoman said Monday that the man had come into contact with Jennifer Burrill, a Santa Fe-based public defender who contracted COVID-19 and tested positive last month.

But Burrill disputed that claim in an interview later Monday evening.

On Tuesday, County Manager Katherine Miller said officials don’t know how the man contracted the virus.

His name had been on an internal county schedule to meet with a public defender on March 11, she said, prompting the jail to test him “out of an abundance of caution” on March 28.

That test came back negative, Miller said, and the man was placed in a dormitory-style pod with 33 other inmates

until he began complaining of COVID-19 symptoms late last week. At that point, he was moved into a quarantine pod and tested again—this time, on Sunday, the result came back positive.

Miller says state Health Department officials tested the other 33 inmates after the man’s positive test. The county learned Tuesday those tests were all negative, as were tests on five county and contract staff who had contact with the man.

Three more staffers’ tests are pending, according to Miller. That means officials are still trying to figure out how the inmate, 38, contracted the virus.

He’s been locked up on drug possession charges since last July.

And according to Burrill, the man has a health condition that could make him more susceptible to the ravages of COVID-19.

“We can’t pinpoint the date where he might have contracted this—only when he began feeling ill, which was the beginning of April,” Miller says. “We need to wait for the other three test results to be able to know more.”

Jails around the nation have become hotspots for COVID-19, with hundreds of inmates and scores of jail staffers testing positive in Louisiana, New York, Illinois and elsewhere. Some have died of

Santa Fe County jail officials compiled a list of 66 inmates who are locked up on nonviolent charges and are medically vulnerable to the ravages of COVID-19 for possible early release, Miller says. So far, 12 of those people have been released.

In Bernalillo County, where an inmate tested positive for COVID-19 last month, a few dozen medically vulnerable people who are awaiting trial on minor offenses have been freed.

In total, more 59 inmates at the Santa Fe County jail have been tested. Three of those tests are pending. And 14 county and contract staff have been tested, with four pending. Aside from the lone inmate who tested positive on Sunday, no inmates or staff have tested positive, Miller says.

Santa Fe Police Department The people whose jobs are changing most right now—and who have the most direct access and insight to the changing pulse of the city around them—are the Santa Fe police.

Sgt. Nick Wood grew up in Santa Fe, graduated from Capital High School in 1999 and joined the Santa Fe Police Department in 2005. He tells SFR his decision to join law enforcement was influenced by his father and several of his uncles, who all retired from the state police force.

But Wood says he felt more inspired to join the city department to protect the community where he was raised.

As a sergeant, Wood is now responsible for five officers whose patrol area encompasses the city’s Southside.

Wood has noted an uptick in call volumes in recent weeks. He believes more people are interested in cooperating with the department. They’re calling in issues such as trespassing or raising concerns about neighbors who might need help because more people are home to notice situations that are out of the ordinary, he says.

SFPD logs show the number of incidents reported did go up steadily for the first three weeks after New Mexico’s first positive case, and then dropped again in the first two weeks of April.

ew Mexicans have been ordered to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as the state reels from 1,407 reported infections and 36 deaths as of Tuesday. For those lucky enough to have the type of job that can be done remotely, that means turning kitchen tables and spare bedrooms into makeshift home offices.

For many others, the pandemic has cost them their jobs.

But there’s a category of workers for whom it is business as usual to ensure society functions: These are the city’s essential workers, the people who keep grocery stores stocked, keep us safe, care for our children, nurse the sick.

With 76 cases, Santa Fe County is far from a national epicenter and, while cases are on the rise, police departments, hospitals and fire departments tell SFR the city is well stocked with protective gear to keep essential workers safe and ventilators to keep people alive if they’re hospitalized. Grocery store workers are doing longer shifts to keep up with demands, and stores have never been so squeaky clean.

SFR spoke with essential workers around the city to piece together how things are changing while the rest of us are stuck at home. We found the city seems to be quietly waiting and preparing for the worst to come, making necessary adjustments to slow the spread of the virus.

Those working in public safety and healthcare noted the number of people getting injured across the city has gone down in recent weeks—a sign that people are following social-distancing and stay-athome orders. At the same time, other kinds of 911 calls, such as trespassing, are going up.

None of those we spoke to have experienced major life disruptions from the virus, even though they all interact daily with dozens of people who put them at high risk for contraction. No one in the Santa Fe Police Department or Fire Department has yet tested positive for the virus, and the medical professionals we spoke to have only seen mild cases (though there are 82 people currently hospitalized in New Mexico.)

Wood also notes a rise in calls about domestic disputes and crimes such as break-ins and shoplifting.

“I think we have seen a bit more frequency in those kinds of calls—the kind from a family member or two roommates who have cabin fever and are at their wit’s end with each other.

And we’re called in to kind of keep the peace and or make an arrest if there’s actual physical violence being done to one another,” says Wood.

When he thinks about what’s coming in the next few weeks, domestic violence and crimes related to economic hardship concern him most. The force is working closely with the state Children, Youth and Families Department to monitor children who may be at risk now that schools are closed.

Wood says he’s also fielded three to four calls per shift directly related to the COVID-19 emergency, such as people reporting nonessential businesses that are still open. He investigates each one and contacts the businesses to educate them on the order and ask them to shut their doors.

The department is working with the State Police to log violations and issue warnings, and that department is responsible for issuing fines and shutting businesses down if they don’t follow the directives of the city police department.

The city department is giving officers more leeway to give people tickets rather than make arrests when they are caught for minor, non-violent offenses in the effort not to crowd the jail and put people at unnecessary risk of infection, Wood says. He’s also encouraging officers to take some reports over the phone when possible to minimize their own exposures.

Within the department, his biggest worry is about staffing in the event that officers start to come down with the virus.

“We’re already short staffed as it is. When a workforce goes down— if the virus began to spread in our ranks—that would be an issue,” he says, adding that Chief Andrew Padilla has issued plans for what to do if that happens. No one in the department has tested positive, though the department is working with hotels to make sure there are rooms available for officers who might need to quarantine if they are exposed to the virus and test positive.

In the end though, says Wood, “I’m hoping that this will bring us together more as a community. When it’s all said and done, that people will have a better appreciation for one another and will have established and strengthened community systems to help one another that can last beyond this crisis.”

Every weekday, Yvette Mata commutes to her job as a cashier at the Allsup’s gas station where Highway 14 meets NM 599.

Mata tells SFR this station is the busiest of all 10 Allsup’s locations in the county. It’s the first gas station off I-25 for commuters entering the city on the drive up from Albuquerque, and one of the last stations on the way out of town for people who live around the Turquoise Trail.

It’s also a central hub for government employees who work in the area, many of whom are regulars in the store.

The New Mexico State Penitentiary, the county jail, the National Guard armory, the State Police headquarters, the Santa Fe airport, Presbyterian Medical Center, the county Fire Department and Regional Emergency Dispatch Center and several other county offices are all located within five miles of the gas station.

“I can tell you that I know at least 85% of my customers by name,” says Mata. “All these people, they are like family, be-

Dr. Virginia Harvey has worked in the Santa Fe Presbyterian medical center emergency room since the hospital opened its doors in October 2018.

Harvey earned her medical degree on the East Coast and graduated from a residency program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013, but has practiced in New Mexico for most of her career since. The first job she took was at the Presbyterian hospital in Albuquerque. She’s taken one detour between that job and this one, when she and her husband packed up their family and moved across the globe to practice in New Zealand for a year, just for the thrill of it.

As an ER doctor, Harvey is one of the medical staff on the frontlines for treating patients, including those suffering from COVID-19.

“I’m there at the very, very beginning. Especially if somebody is

rushed in. If the EMS service thinks they’re critical and they’re coming with lights and sirens, I’m in the room before anything else happens.

That’s kind of my style,” Harvey says.

Usually, she enjoys working a job where every day is different. But the unprecedented nature of COVID-19 presents a daunting challenge.

Harvey tells SFR she spends most of her spare time learning everything she can about the virus. She jokes that she and her husband, who is also an emergency room doctor at the same hospital, have replaced date night and Netflix with video conferences with doctors from around the country who are sharing their findings on the most effective treatment practices or problems.

“One of the hardest things about this situation is that in practicing medicine, we make decisions based on years of experience and years of clinical trials but this is all so new

Mata was born in Texas but grew up in New Mexico and has five adult children who all live in the area. She’s thankful they are still healthy and employed and have not yet felt any personal impacts of the virus.

She doesn’t know any customers who have gotten sick or have sick people at home either, and for the most part, she says people are staying positive.

Many customers are also wearing gloves and masks, and they regularly ask her how she’s doing and if her family has what they need.

“Just yesterday I had a young lady, she walked in and she had an envelope with my name on it, and she actually made us handmade masks, beautiful masks that you can insert a filter in between, and she addressed it to Yvette and all of the Allsup’s crew,” she says, clearly touched by the gesture. “There was one there for each of us.”

This last weekend was Mata’s birthday. Though she declines to tell SFR how old she turned, she says she spent the last year looking forward to celebrating in Las Vegas with a week-long vacation. Now, she’ll take a staycation instead.

Even though she lives on the other side of Santa Fe, in the 12 years she’s worked for Allsup’s, Mata says she’s become part of a close community of people whose connections are fostered through interactions at the store.

But this also puts her at a higher risk of catching COVID-19 than most gas station clerks across the city, because so many of the people who come into the store on a daily basis work in jobs that are considered essential and have daily interaction with other people.

“We are seeing the same people that I did a month ago,” Mata says. “On a daily basis, two or three times a day sometimes.

They’ll come in in the morning before their shift, they’ll come in on their lunch hour, and then they’ll stop in and see us again on their way home.”

So far, Mata says she hasn’t felt too worried about contracting the virus because the team at the store is extra vigilant about hygiene. Staff members are opening the door for customers, consistently wear gloves and masks, and wipe down surfaces at least every half hour.

She is optimistic that the situation will remain stable here. She says people’s compliance with stay-at-home orders are already paying off, and the

Moises Tarango El Paisano Supermarket

Moises Tarango has worked at El Paisano Supermarket since 1998, when the grocery store and butchery first opened on Cerrillos Road. Now, he works mostly in the office and is in charge of accounts and payroll, but still occasionally runs the cash register.

When he thinks about the possibility of being exposed to the virus at work, Tarango says he’s much more worried about bringing the virus home to his family than about getting sick himself. He has to stop his three kids from running up and hugging him like they used to when he gets home at the end of the day, reminding them to wait until he has changed his clothes and showered. As the number of cases increases across the state, he says he’s taken it upon himself to model proper hygiene, wearing masks and social distancing in the store, at home and in his community.

“Some people maybe don’t understand the full impact [of their behavior on the spread of the virus], especially kids,” he says. “With friends and family too, we have to be the example.

People in the community are looking to us right now.”

Tarango says the supermarket is constantly changing practices to accommodate the evolving COVID-19 emergency. They’ve started a rigorous sanitation regime, and even before the city passed stricter ordinances for grocery stores, El Paisano was already limiting the number of customers

that we are learning as we go,” she says. “But I’m also fairly hopeful because I think it is rare to see this level of camaraderie...So while it certainly can be scary, it’s also been inspiring.”

Harvey says she’s already seen some patients who have tested positive for the virus, but none has been in critical condition. So she’s sent them home with clear instructions for how to care for themselves and what symptoms to watch for that could indicate they are headed toward a crash.

She says emergency room volumes have decreased in recent weeks because people aren’t driving to work or going to sports practice and are generally putting themselves in fewer dangerous situations.

Christus St. Vincent Health Systems closed down its Southside urgent care clinic citing the same reason last week.

What feels like a lull before the storm has given Presbyterian valuable time to prepare for a possible surge of cases, Harvey says, noting the hospital has already been preparing since before New Mexico announced its first positive case on March 11.

That included opening a public test site and planning how to convert the space they have to accommodate patients in critical condition if needed.

The store provides gloves to all customers upon entry, and only allows one member of each family to enter.

The locally owned grocery store has also started a curbside grocery pickup service for customers to place orders over the phone or Facebook.

Tarango says management is doing everything they can to make sure no one loses their jobs, reassigning kitchen staff to new cleaning duties.

Prices at the store are also being impacted.

“The price for eggs has gone up astronomically,” Tarango says, so much so that the store has had to raise egg prices for customers. The cost of meat has gone up too, but Tarango says the store is keeping meat prices the same for customers as long as it can and is swallowing some of the lost profits in the effort to “make sure our community can afford to eat.”

gone into quarantine due to exposure, and the infrequent partnership between Archuleta and Coffey could become more common as the department adapts.

On a regular day, the two respond to everything from car crashes to overdoses. As a paramedic, Archuleta works to stabilize patients at the scene, while Coffey, a firefighter/EMT, provides medical backup.

Archuleta says they have

gotten some medical calls from people who have symptoms of the virus, but the department is treating every call as a potential positive for COVID-19. They now wear masks every time they go out, and have changed protocol for responding to 911 medical calls, trying to limit exposure for first responders as much as possible.

The department has directed first responders to speak to patients who may be sick by

phone to assess the situation before they go in, and have limited the number of responders who immediately enter the scene.

Archuleta and Coffey are married to nurses, which means in these families, no one avoids the risk of exposure.

But even as members of fire departments across the country come down with the virus in large numbers, Coffey says he feels hopeful Santa Fe will

be largely spared. Even if the situation gets much worse, he says, “at the end of the day this is our job. If there’s a serious emergency, we’re going in no matter what.”

Archuleta adds that Santa Feans are doing “an excellent job” at following recommended guidelines. “Keep it up, stay home. This is absolutely the best way that people in Santa Fe can support first responders,” he says.

performances. I think it can be done well, but for us, using our time and energy toward planning the future is our priority right now. We are very mindful of our audience and donors and wanting to maintain relationships with them. We’ve made calls to test some of our ideas, like if we could start concerts in September, how likely [are they] to attend?

Economic times are uncertain, how likely [are they] to subscribe? That helps us as well in terms of how we consider the structure.

SFR: At this moment in time, what is going on with Santa Fe ProMusica?

Mary Madigan: I think at first it was natural to want to race to adapt to launch an online presence, and…and… and. And to get our new season out there and promoted, but realizing that life is suspended for most people, it seemed to me we had some time. The world is going to be different when doors start to open again. There’s no question, no doubt that there’s going to be economic fallout, so let’s take a moment to prepare for that now. Let’s not be in crisis management mode for the next month, for the

next year and a half. The different phases of how we can engage with each other is unknown, but let’s get ahead of that now.

Still, with a pedigree including the Vermont Mozart Festival and New York City’s Concert Artists Guild and Composers Now organizations, Mary Madigan is uniquely positioned to weather the storm and create solutions to new problems imposed on…literally everyone. With news of Pro Musica canceling the remainder of its 2020 performances, SFR spoke with Madigan about the present, the future and how the outfit plans on paying musicians meant to play in Santa Fe for the postponed season through a $50,000 emergency fund created at the advent of the crisis.

How strange is it to take something over in the midst of an international crisis?

Honestly, it’s not as crazy as you might think. I think perhaps for having been self-employed and having to be versatile and ride the wave as the standard course; for always being flexible, always adapting to different clients, running the organization I was running in New York City, where everybody was working at home—working at home is not new to me—I adapted to it right away. What’s thrown me more is the concern for the health of everyone—my friends in New York, what might go down here in New Mexico—but in terms of managing the situation, I adapt and react pretty quickly. Being thoughtful about how we approach our new season—I’m used to things being in flux.

I assume you’re planning short and long-term strategies, what might these be and how are they being implemented?

Most of our time is being spent thinking about how best to plan and program the next season. What is likely to happen, or one of the things I’m considering seriously, is starting our season later than usual to allow more time for it be safer for people to be out there. We’ve created a few different scenarios for what it

might look like in terms of the program, in terms of the schedule. Within, I’d say, a month, we’ll know what scenario we’re choosing. We’re going to wait a little longer before we solidify that. We’re mostly concerned with how to prepare for next season, but of course there’s the immediate financial management.

For us, managing the immediate crisis means logistic shifts, but also pausing to be thoughtful about how to plan for next season. I know what people will see next season—they’ll see all the hallmarks of Santa Fe Pro Musica, but the structure of the season may appear different. It took some discipline because the initial reaction is to scramble and push plans forward, plans that have already been made. It took some discipline to say we can wait a bit and to reflect on how many ways we can roll out a season.

Are virtual concerts a possibility?

It’s not a knee-jerk reaction for us to say let’s just put concerts online. The experience is different. That’s not to say we wouldn’t consider streaming our

We were in an executive committee meeting, and this was also the day after the first cases were reported in New Mexico. We were scheduled to discuss the impact if we had to cancel. During that meeting, the mass gathering ban rolled out, and it was no longer hypothetical. One of our board members expressed deep concern for the musicians who’d be out of work—they’re the heart of the organization—and over the weekend they made a structure for [the fund].

One member put up $10,000 in matching funds, and bam—we had a relief fund. I don’t exactly know [how many musicians have been affected], but if 55 musicians are affected by the cancellations, and should we meet our goal, 55 will be receiving support.

Bread Already Let us bake bread together on our own

M

y diet during the COVID-19 stay-at-home has been an erratic blend of dishes that get thoughtful love and care mixed with dishes that hardly earn that title, including the likes of frozen pizza rolls and cans of chili. I’ve got one package of spaghetti sauce from last year’s garden left in the freezer for a rainy day, and although the pantry is stocked with nonperishables, I’m eagerly awaiting the first home delivery of produce from a local CSA today.

But something else is happening in my kitchen during the pandemic, and I hear tell it’s happening all over the place: We’re baking bread.

The high desert climate is hell on bread. For a small household of people who are often out of the house for at least one meal per day, we found in prepandemic life that it’s hard to consume a loaf of storebought bread before it dries out. So having bread at home is an abnormal event unless it’s from Santo Domingo’s outdoor market during a gas stop. Home baked bread, though? That’s like mythical unicorn status.

Not anymore. The loaf rising in a bowl now represents the fifth time I’ve gone through the roughly 2 gajillion

steps involved in getting sourdough from the starter to the counter since COVID-19 hit the state. In the midst of breaking news about new infection numbers and working bad math problems about revenue and costs, I pounced on an invitation to obtain a fabled yeast starter. How often do we get the chance to try new things that are so risk-free? How frequent are “first times” for something as we edge past middle age?

The social distancing exchange wherein I dropped off a jar of apricot chutney and picked up a tiny container of gooey, bubbling, living manna went well. Up next, the in-

ternet, where you’ll find no shortage of recipes, advice, podcasts and pictures about whatever bread you want to try.

While I was reading, the top popped off the starter on the counter. Indeed, it’s alive!

The first set of instructions for artisan sourdough I tried was 11 pages long, but I whittled it down to four and, on the third loaf, printed them out and attached the paper to the oven hood with a magnet. I found it helped me to make notes about the time I started each step. Plus, I set a timer so that if I was hunkered in listening to hour two of a gubernatorial press conference, I could break away to perform the required “stretch and pull” without missing a beat.

When the loaves finally come out of the oven, whether they’re perfectly caramelized and make what seasoned bakers call “the bread music,” or they emerge a little tough on the bottom and pale on the top, the smell alone seems to comfort. Then there’s the slathering with jam, the dipping in chili (the Texas kind), and the melting of butter.

Words cannot come close.

Turns out, we are not the only ones.

This bread baking craze is apparently part of being together alone. Taking the better part of two days to complete a simple project and then enjoying its nutrition and taste seems like the kind of self care we can manage—even if there were Totino’s three-meats and a party sized bag of M&Ms on either side of the affair.

And I don’t think this is one of those Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon discussions, where once you start thinking about something, you notice it everywhere. I am pretty sure bread is just everywhere right now. Even Outside magazine published a piece about bread last week. It’s the most inside thing I can think of.

Thanks to social media, I’ve seen good looking loaves from a bit of the starter that I passed along, now living in Bellamah. A journalist I know in California tried something that ended up flat and burned. But the photo of her laughing about it made me laugh, too.

Raton author Sharon Niederman made her first loaf of sourdough from scratch without starter, writing “nothing but air, water, flour, and salt. This dough really wanted to become bread.” My brother in St. Louis put a cross in the top of his loaf on Good Friday.

Then there’s my bread angel. Not only did local therapist and exceptional home cook Naja Harrell Druva hook it up with the starter, but she happily quesanswered my texted ques tions about every step of the process. I felt fearless and supported enough to keep trying.

“Bread is this powerful metaphor for survival…I hapdon’t know what’s going to hap pen in just about any aspect of my life,” she writes. “But today I have bread, and bread enough for tomorrow.”

It Started as a Joke Review Eugene Mirman: the guy who shaped comedy as we know it

If you’ve enjoyed practically any kind of comedy— from sitcoms to Netflix specials to indie movies, shorts or cartoons—over the last decade or so, chances are it might not have been possible without comedian Eugene Mirman.

The voice of Gene from Bob’s Burgers (and, really, so many other things) has had such an intense impact on the alt.comedy world, in fact, that there’s still no telling how far his contributions will reach. But in It Started as a Joke, from filmmakers Julie Smith Clem and Ken Druckerman, we get the tip of the iceberg, learning how Mirman brought together countless standups, writers, DJs, musicians and all-around culture tastemakers through his New York City-based Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, and why it could be one of the most important comedic events you’ve never heard about.

It’s not that comedy hasn’t always existed, rather that Mirman’s contributions came at a time when the old guard was growing stale and the new school was still defining itself. He was an early adopter of video shorts and took prop comedy out of the Carrot Top realm and into a space

RESISTANCE + MARCEL MARCEAU—WHO KNEW? - FEELS LIKE LITERALLY ANY OTHER WWII MOVIE DESPITE MATERIAL

“Why do you go to the bathroom?” Jesse Eisenberg, as Marcel Marceau, asks his father in the new film Resistance from Venezuelan filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz. In the scene, Marceau’s father Charles (Karl Markovics) is stubbornly demanding to understand why his son creates art.

“Because my body gives me no choice,” Charles responds.

“And there it is,” Eisenberg’s character replies.

It’s a quiet yet poignant moment in an otherwise by-the-numbers WWII film, but it’s one that heralds more harrowing events to come: In case you didn’t know, Marcel Marceau— yes, the mime—saved or helped save literally thousands of Jewish children during the Nazi occupation of France, and Jakubowicz takes us inside some sort of sensationalized version of those events, ones it’s probable not everyone knows.

Eisenberg’s take on the most famous mime is certainly…something. His trademarked fasttalking weirdness kind of works in earlier, sillier scenes set in the late-1930s, but the deeper into the war things progress, the more it seems out of place. He tries to make up for it with mime work and tense glances exchanged with his love interest Emma (Clémence Poésy), but never once does he feel like an actual mime and never once does he seem like someone

more easily described as early offline memes; in a pre-social media world, he gave shape and voice to so many commonplace comedic elements that, at the time, were little more than vaporous concepts.

The number of big time comics who came through Mirman’s festival is almost unbelievable, and we watch so many of them evolve in the short doc over a 10-year period of found footage, behind-the-scenes moments, and during the leadup to 2017’s final festival, the last before Mirman’s wife died of cancer.

Kristen Schaal, Reggie Watts, H. John Benjamin, Michael Showalter, Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, Chris Gethard, Mike Birbiglia, Janeane Garofolo, Jim Gaffigan, John fucking Oliver—anybody who’s anybody either came up through or performed at Mirman’s fest, and Smith Clem and Druckerman interview as many as can fit into their loving look at how Mirman (and

actually up to the tasks unfolding before him. Poésy is charming in a certain way, but mainly her character exists to ask about where Marcel is, what Marcel is doing and to protect him and to do things he asks of her, even when she wishes to do otherwise.

Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey, however, has the goods, as per usual. And though her character, a teenaged orphan uprooted repeatedly while fleeing the Nazis, is given precious little to do, she remains one of the most talented young actors working today. Against Eisneberg’s antics, too, she ekes out something akin to actual familial love; it’s written in her eyes. Matthias Schweighöfer, meanwhile, as the infamous Klaus Barbie, proves a capable Nazi, albeit one who is sometimes portrayed as cartoonishly evil. It’s unclear why we need a primer on his deeds when “Nazi=bad” seems the most basic equation.

And though the locations in which Resistance is filmed can be gorgeous, everything else is that pale blue-grey filmmaking view of WWII. It becomes difficult to access sincere emotion for characters so half-baked even as it’s consistently interesting to learn of Marceau’s contributions to the good guys.

Nevertheless, for budding historians (or just those who didn’t know), a deeper look into Marceau’s artistic pursuits—and their oddly beautiful ability to come into play while fleeing fascism—is a noble pursuit. If only Jakubowicz had taken a slightly less mainstream tack, we might’ve had something special or at least a little more memorable. As it stands, it’s mostly interesting and only occasionally dull—a per-

It’s sheer bliss for comedy nerds set against the ups and downs of Mirman’s own career and personal life. There, things get darker and more real, but even in interviews with his wife at the zenith of cancer, the importance of comedy, especially in the dark times, shines through. There’s comfort in holding that, and Mirman’s unadulterated honesty—even in how unwittingly he managed to put together the festival—is relatable. It Started as a Joke thus makes the viewer feel like they’re part of something, and isn’t that kind of the point of art in the first place?

+ LIKE NOTHING YOU’VE SEEN - GOOD LUCK HANGING ON TIL THE END

The words don’t come easily. If any do, they pretty much form the phrase “buckle up, assholes,” because Butt Boy from writer/director Tyler Cormack easily has the strangest premise for a film this year, and that’s saying something.

It begins with a rectal exam for Chip (played by Cormack), a bored middle-ager with a bland home life and a void to fill. Turns out he loves the feeling, and so begins his obsession with cramming things up his ass—a bar of soap, the TV remote, maybe even a fucking dog. Children go missing, Chip’s wife is concerned, the police come knocking. What.

The. Fuck?

Jump ahead nine years and Chip’s in AA, the newly-minted sponsor of hard-boiled detective Russell Fox (Tyler Rice). Fox is just trying to clean up his act but positive a new missing child case can be traced back to Chip.

But there’s nothing on Earth that can prepare either of them for the brutal reality of the man’s anal obsession, and as the dragnet clos-

es in, Chip discovers just how deep he’s willing to go. Fox’s career hangs in the balance and his theories alienate his superiors. A darker secret than anyone’s prepared for is slowly uncovered; you think you’ll know, but we promise you—you really don’t know.

Butt Boy is thus incredibly hard to evaluate. Is it experimental genre cinema or some kind of frat humor descent into nonsense? Is it absurd beyond measure as a test for audiences, or is it over-the-top silly and disgusting because its makers sincerely think ass jokes are funny? Much of Cormack’s writing does the job, as does his turn as the anal-obsessed Chip (mostly, anyway). Some things feel funny and natural, others not so much. Rice’s alcoholic detective, meanwhile, looks and acts, as Chip says at one point, like every detective ever. As for whether this means he’s good or bad…well, it’s not realistic to assign that line of thinking to this film. He does what he must, and it’s fine.

As a lampooning of the genre, then, Butt Boy almost works out; as a very niche film doing things that almost make Human Centipede look like high art (whatever that means), it’s hard to understand. As a standalone project judged by its own merits, it’s even harder to recommend Butt Boy to anyone outside the most ardent horror/gross-out flick fans. Even then, attempts at mocking corporate America or the ostensibly empty suburban dream are overshadowed by its final disgusting act, one you’ll admittedly never see coming. (ADV)

CHRISTANNA and her friend MISSONI were adopted from F&F a few years ago. Sadly, their human passed away unexpectedly in March 2020. These dear cats are now in need of a new home together. CHRISTANNA is still a bit shy but she will allow you to pet her if you approach slowly. She is a beautiful gray tabby girl that is 8 years old. MISSONI is also a timid cat and tends to hide for a few weeks in a new environment; he needs a home with a gentle person who will show him patience and tenderness. MISSONI will sometimes hiss when approached, but with a gentle touch he will purr, his posture will soften and he will welcome affection.

MISSONI is 14 years old and had one eye removed due to a previous injury, but gets along just fine without it. Both of these cats are not comfortable around small children, but enjoy the company of fellow cats as well as gentle dogs.
