Strange Session

islators tried to cap rates at 36%, which would more closely mirror national standards.

Midway through the session, the reforms appeared to be breathing, if apprehensively. But after a relatively easy trip through the Senate, Las Cruces Democratic Sen. Bill Soules’ legislation smacked into the wall on the House side. Rep. Patricia Lundstrom, a Gallup Democrat and longtime ally to the storefront lending industry, shepherded a “compromise” amendment that was ultimately unpalatable to sponsors.

Lots accomplished, but plenty left on the table

N

ew Mexico lawmakers charged to the end of a bizarre 60-day legislative session on Saturday, March 20, passing bills into the final hours that would require private sector employers to offer paid sick leave, create long-sought transparency on how legislators use capital outlay money and more.

Masks and Zoom hearings marked the marathon session, as did allegations of racism during a Republican senator’s questioning of a Black cabinet nominee, empty galleries in the legislative chambers and the evidence of hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on extra security for the Roundhouse.

COVID-19 and the vague but looming threat of political violence made this perhaps the strangest session ever.

The Legislature accomplished plenty—it passed a bitterly opposed Civil Rights Act that would allow those wronged by government officials to sue in state District Court, tax reform, business relief, and it bolstered abortion rights and a coming constitutional amendment question for voters on education funding.

The two chambers agreed on alcohol regulation reform and rent relief, too.

But there was plenty left on the table, as well.

Lawmakers once again failed to rein in predatory lending, an industry that operates with fewer restrictions in New Mexico than in nearly any other state.

And though it reached nearer to the finish line than ever before, a proposal to legalize adult-use cannabis died under the crushing weight of numerous amendments and never even received a hearing from the full Senate.

That failure has prompted Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to strongly signal that legislators will be coming back to Santa Fe, likely by the end of the month, for a special session to deal with cannabis legalization, which was among her priorities this year.

While you wait for more glitchy video links, hot mic moments and partisan recriminations to once again dominate your computer screen, here is a nearly complete scorecard indicating how some of the bills SFR followed during the session ultimately fared:

CANNABIS

House Bill 12 cleared the lower chamber Feb. 26 on a 39-31 floor vote. The measure was similar to the proposal adopted by the House last year and marked the sixth consecutive year of attempts at adult-use legalization. It made two committee stops, ending at the Senate Judiciary Committee that happened after 1 am Thursday, March 18, with a do-pass recommendation. But then it sputtered out, with Senate leaders choosing not to give it a floor vote.

While no date for the special session is firm, Lujan Grisham warned she might call it as soon as March 31. In a news conference after the session ended Saturday, she said, “If you look at all of the brokering of efforts to bring two sides of an issue together, and it happened over and over again, we have an incredible framework ready to go for adult-use cannabis.” (Julie Ann Grimm)

HBs 84-87 would have provided appropriations for Indigenous education initiatives and amended statutes to award tribes more agency in the schooling of Native students.

“It’s frustrating that there is is yet to be the kind of understanding that results in a more comprehensive action to endorse these pieces of legislation that are critical…to respond to the findings in Yazzie/Martinez,” Regis Pecos, co-founder of the Leadership Institute at Santa Fe Indian School and former governor of Cochiti Pueblo, tells SFR. Despite this disappointing outcome for Indigenous rights advocates, education equity made some progress this session. Two successful pieces of legislation (HB 52 and HB 287) will establish a bilingual multicultural advisory committee and a task force to survey students’ access to culturally appropriate social services, respectively. ENVIRONMENT The Community Solar Act is perhaps the most anticipated bill of the lot. It will allow renters and people who can’t afford rooftop solar to access the benefits of solar through subscription to a community solar project.

Thanks to HB 76 and Senate Bill 8, we could be breathing cleaner air in the future. HB 76 passed on Tuesday. It allows the New Mexico Environment Department to deny permits for companies that lied on their applications or have been convicted of environmental crimes in other states. SB 8 allows state departments to pass some environmental regulations that are more stringent than those at the federal level, which will help local governments more effectively regulate methane and other air pollutants. The worst-case scenario has arrived for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives Task Force. HB 208, which would have expanded and diversified the group as well as given it added formality with legislation behind it, didn’t make it past the House Appropriations and Finance Committee this session.

And it’s not clear if the task force will receive funding from the supplemental, or “junior” spending bill, which allots money to each lawmaker for pet projects, to continue at least some of the work of the task force. The funding, which is included in SB 377, is subject to a line-item veto by the governor, according to Stephanie Salazar, general counsel for the Indian Affairs Department.

Salazar tells SFR that she doesn’t know when she’ll find out if the department will receive the money, but hopes it will be in the next week. It also isn’t decided how the money would be used if given to the department or whether the task force will continue to partner with the Native American Budget and Policy Institute. ity employees are sick of facing financial uncertainty.

Robert John Narvaiz was one of half a dozen employees who spoke up to ask for raises in a “listening session” regarding the upcoming budget earlier in March. Another 230 sent letters to City Council members.

“There’s another gentleman who’s been with the city for 14 years. I hav-

en’t been with the city that long, but he makes about 60 cents more an hour than I do and I came in at the starting wage,” said Narvaiz, who works in the Parking Division. “It’s really disheartening…to have nobody having our backs when it comes to this budget process.”

All city employees endured furloughs at the beginning of the pandemic. But not all lost the same number of hours.

City documents show that 868 employees with an average salary of $24.45 were furloughed for four hours a week, while 180 employees with an average salary of $20.20 lost 16 hours.

Last year the local employees union, AFSCME Local 3999, filed a complaint against the city over the first nine weeks of furloughs. The New Mexico Public Employees Labor Relations Board has

Gil Martinez: Absolutely. In our last contract, we had negotiated a 2% raise each year. That contract expired last June. Now, we’re in the middle of negotiations for a union contract for a term of three years, and we want an annual raise to be a part of that. But…we’re having a very difficult time negotiating with the city, it’s taking us a lot longer than normal. Usually a contract will take two months to get finalized, but we’re now nine months in and we’re not even close to finalizing it. Some of that is because of COVID, but our membership got very concerned because if this is gonna take another six months, the budget could be approved and passed without even a contract being in front of City Council telling them that they have to account for a wage increase….Of course the union can’t tell the City Council to put money aside because we are in the middle of negotiations. But our members are very upset. Many have taken it upon themselves to speak up and let the City Council know that they need to put an allocation in the budget for when the negotiation is complete so that the city can make sure everyone gets some kind of increase.

City employees have talked about wages being stagnant for a long time.

Is that true?

Since the 2008 recession started, the union employees hadn’t got any rais-

es until this last contract that included 2% per year. We are talking about 12, 13 years. In all that time city employees have only got three raises, 2% a year for three years. And that is it. We are way behind.

It seems like there’s this sentiment that lower wage employees have taken a bigger hit during the pandemic.

Like I said, the ones that work the hardest are the ones that aren’t appreciated at all.

When the furloughs were initiated last year, the people that were making minimum wage got hit the hardest. Employees making under $16 an hour were about half of the people who got 16 hours taken away from them—that’s 40% of their pay.

To start with, their checks are tiny, and then taking 40% of your pay away, even if it only lasted a few months—that’s huge. A lot of our members were just calling us up, literally crying. They didn’t know which way to turn. Most of them didn’t qualify for unemployment because they were still working some, but they were having a hard time making ends meet.

What was the union’s position on wage cuts for employees?

Our position was if they have to do furloughs, it should be straight across the board. Everybody gets the same amount off. And that wasn’t the case.

What’s happening now with the lawsuit?

We won the case and they did say that the city needed to make it whole to their employees. The problem we’re having now is the city’s definition of “whole.”

They want to define it and they’re not wanting to pay us everything for those nine weeks [of furloughs], so we’re in the middle of hearings on that one right now. …It’s going to be up to the hearing officer to determine what they owe.

THE PANDEMIC CLASS Graduating seniors reflect on a year lost (and found) to COVID-19 B Y K AT H E R I N E L E W I N k a t h e r i n e @ s f r e p o r t e r. c o m

N

ew Mexico’s educators and families have hit more than their share of speed bumps—and in some cases, brick walls—along the road of education since the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the state last spring.

Spotty internet connections have made teaching and learning tough in the face of shuttered schoolhouses, athletics have been erased, and kids have been forced to spend more time with their screens than with their friends.

There have been triumphs, too.

Officials improved internet connectivity on campuses and tribal lands.

Families bought new Wi-Fi routers to accommodate schooling from home.

Teachers figured out how to raise their own kids as well as others’ and found new ways to connect with their students, even through a screen. Some teachers and students were able to return to school, albeit socially distanced.

And, perhaps most importantly, hundreds of seniors across Santa Fe are in the homestretch of high school.

Graduation rates for Santa Fe Public Schools also improved for the 20192020 school year, despite the pandemic—86.3% for the district, tracking above the statewide average of 77%.

Since the 2016-2017 school year, the district’s graduation rate has increased 17%.

But no amount of clever adaptations, hybrid learning models or high-speed internet can soften the blows of a year of letdowns and cancellations for these

almost-adults: no prom; no fall evening football games spent squished between friends, eating a hotdog while a wet monsoon wind keeps you cool; no sleepovers; no passing notes in class or chance connections with a new teacher or a new friend that makes high school less agonizing.

Imagine the stress of a senior year with few, if any, of the reliefs that make it bearable.

While interviewing seniors, teachers and school leaders, SFR quickly found several patterns of thought and feeling about a pandemic graduating class: It’s lonely, it’s hard to stay motivated, education is simply better in person, and the Wi-Fi connection seems reliable until you’re trying to submit an assignment at 11:58 pm when it’s due by midnight.

Again, though, the triumphs: Santa Fe schools’ leaders have come up with their own plans to re-open after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham gave the goahead in February. Starting Feb. 22, some students began walking the halls of the district’s public schools in the hybrid-learning approach. Local schools are set to return to traditional learning on April 6, although officials are still collecting numbers of students who want to return versus available teachers and space for social distancing.

There won’t be a prom­—though graduation ceremonies will be held on football fields across the city in late May, so 2021 won’t yield a class lost completely to cyberspace.

Santa Fe’s students have applied to Ivy League schools—and gotten in.

Others have steered their youthful ships toward the military or culinary programs. Some are working jobs to save up before taking off for the West Coast, no real goal in mind, except to experience themselves outside of the walls of their childhood home.

Among the threads connecting the students who spoke with SFR are feelings of anxiety, depression and occasionally a suffocating sense of isolation brought on or exacerbated by the unreality of the past 12 months. Another commonality: They all want adventure as the world emerges from the pandemic.

It makes sense. Students’ final tours in their high school career have been marked by classes, movie nights, birthday parties, college acceptance celebrations and more—all lived through a screen that inevitably goes dark.

None of it has been easy, but the students, the faculty, the administrators, the staff and the parents have, in most cases, made it work.

Laura Carthy, a senior AP English and literature teacher at Capital High School, tells SFR she would love to return to in-person learning, but she has a medically fragile son, so she won’t return to school physically until she has been vaccinated. After a school board meeting in early spring, the teachers union and district have agreed to allow staff to volunteer to return. Including

full- and part-time district employees, 344 staff members have returned to work as of March 17.

Carthy says while it has been difficult to keep some students engaged, the ones who really want to succeed have, despite the difficulties. National news organizations have published stories depicting increased anxiety and depression among students that paint a far darker picture than the reality Carthy says she’s seen.

“I think it’s really insulting to teachers that the national media is just making it seem like everything sucks and everybody wants to die,” she tells SFR. “I think that’s overstated. It is what it is.…

[It’s] not easy, but it is possible.”

The New Mexico Public Education Department and its partners have also managed quite a feat despite considerable challenges: Over 12,000 students were marked as “unaccounted for” earlier this year—most have now been found.

As of March 17, 2,522 students are unaccounted for statewide, according to the department. Only three of the nearly 3,000 unaccounted-for students are in the Santa Fe Public School District. However, 3,665 SFPS students were chronically absent this school year, which means they were absent 10% or more of the time.

Following are the stories of five graduating seniors SFR interviewed.

Consider them a peek into how Santa Fe’s students have struggled, adapted and excelled in this most unusual academic year.

it,” Wald says. “I heard that coronavirus may have adverse effects which are still being studied, like heart problems….I do not want there to be adverse effects if I do decide to attend the United States Military Academy, because the first six weeks, I have to do…basic training, and I don’t want to be having an issue because I had coronavirus.”

Wald has been particularly cautious around exposure to the virus. He recently went hiking with friends and it was the first time he had seen them in months. He didn’t get a job during the pandemic because his mom, who has been “strict” about the health orders, asked him not to.

He, his parents and two younger siblings have been holed up together since March, with multiple Google Meet classes happening around the house. (Like most of the students SFR spoke with, his family had to upgrade their Wi-Fi speed and connectivity when all three kids started school from home.)

Despite an interrupted senior year, no chance to lead the band during football games, increased anxiety and feelings of isolation, Wald has been able to exercise more frequently than he would have had in-person school continued. It’ll pay off if he decides to join the military. And most importantly, it’s a point of pride for him, an emotion that has been severely lacking in a world dominated by fear.

high school’s drum major for his senior year. (The drum major directs the entire marching band during performances and competitions.)

This was all before the pandemic, of course, during his junior year.

What followed looked nothing like the script, and it’s been disappointing.

Wald’s position as drum major would have been a “nice way” to close his senior year and final marching season.

“We did have some practices over the summer, but as the coronavirus got worse, we had to cancel it,” Wald tells SFR. “And in the end, we had to scrap the entirety of marching season, and I’m not sure what’s going to happen….We have the music for next year’s marching band season. But the problem is, I’m a senior, I’m gone, that was it.”

He’s almost gone, anyway. He’s deep in college applications now, and he’s already heard back from a few—he got a scholarship to attend Texas Tech University, which he’s considering.

The United States Military Academy at West Point is also a possibility. His dream of joining the military is one reason he doesn’t want to go back to Santa Fe High, even under the hybrid learning model in which some students will be allowed on campus.

The uncertainty of COVID-19’s long-term impacts scare Wald, and not just for his own wellbeing.

“I don’t want to bring coronavirus back to my parents because I don’t know what’s going to happen if they get

She did most of her homework and even attended class on her phone, using up precious and expensive data. Her family had to pay multiple data overage fees.

To avoid that, she often sat in the parking lot of Boxcar and used the sports bar’s Wi-Fi. She has worked on and off as a hostess there throughout the pandemic.

It was a rough beginning and it didn’t necessarily get easier, even though Jaramillo’s mom and grandmother did eventually install Wi-Fi. Jaramillo was able to attend class from a laptop by the end of her junior year.

Naval Academy, which I’ve yet to hear back from, but both of them require a physical exam called the Candidate Fitness Assessment,” Wald tells SFR. “And because of COVID, I was actually given more free time and was able to properly prepare for the exam and do quite well in it, which is something I’m quite proud of.”

Jamilla Jaramillo plans to attend culinary school in the fall, though business school at UNM is also a possibility.

Despite a difficult year, the future is looking up, though it’s not clear exactly where it will lead for Jaramillo. She’s applying to culinary school at Central New Mexico College and New Mexico State University. She wonders often if a culinary track is a “dead end” though— so she’s also applying to the University of New Mexico for a degree in business.

Even looking forward doesn’t quite take away the sting of a senior year of losses. “It sucks that I don’t get to experience a senior year like everyone else did,” Jaramillo tells SFR. “We can’t even see any of our friends. We can’t go to class. We don’t experience the senior prom, and we don’t get to take our class picture, let alone...see each other and see everyone’s accomplishments this year.”

But all three contracted COVID-19 in November, probably from other family members who live nearby.

“My mom…had it the worst of all of us,” Jaramillo says. “Me, I had body aches like one day and then I just lost my taste and smell. I was eating and I was like, wait a minute, I can’t taste.”

Jaramillo’s experience—illness, unstable employment as an essential worker at a restaurant and internet issues at her rural home—paints her as the quintessential New Mexico student.

She wants to see her friends walk across the stage at graduation. She really wanted to go to prom. There’s a sense of loss—she will never get to experience the traditions that an uncountable number of American high school seniors have lived for generations.

Emma Tsosie has struggled to feel motivated since starting school from home—but still got accepted to Dartmouth College.

Headed for Dartmouth Emma Tsosie Santa Fe Preparatory School Emma Tsosie is a self-described introvert. She didn’t participate much in sports or clubs at Santa Fe Preparatory School, which she’s attended since the seventh grade, so the arrival of the pandemic didn’t take that from her. In fact, the impacts of COVID-19 on life in general have fit Tsosie like a puzzle piece in some ways—they have slowed everything down to a pace that feels more manageable to her.

“I like when things are slower,” Tsosie says. “It’s hard because obviously I haven’t really seen my friends and I miss them, but it’s nice that…the world has just slowed down, so you can take your time more with things. And overall, I have really loved my classes, even though they’ve been online. I just have a really great time with opportunities in classes that I have had, even though it’s through Zoom.”

While a life partially on hold doesn’t feel that bad to Tsosie, the isolation has gotten to her in some ways.

She has struggled to feel motivated, which she says stems from anxiety and depression. Switching from her mom’s house in Santa Fe to her dad’s house in Nambé, plus school, hasn’t left a lot of space to socialize.

Santa Fe Prep moved to a hybrid model in February, which has improved Tsosie’s sense of isolation—two grades are on campus at a time while the rest are online.

“I noticed when I go on campus for a few days, like two weeks ago now, I felt a lot better than I expected I would after having just small interactions with somebody before class,” Tsosie tells SFR.

She’s not ready to go back to school full-time yet, though, even if allowed under current public health orders.

Despite the disappointment of this school year, the fear of getting COVID has kept her appreciating Prep’s online framework. She understands the importance of not spreading the virus— she’s a registered member of Picuris Pueblo and has Navajo relatives and ancestry.

The Navajo Nation has been particularly hard-hit by the spread of COVID-19. Early on in the pandemic, it had the highest per-capita infection rate in the US. Like the other students SFR interviewed for this story, the public health orders and the complete destruction of all senior year expectations hasn’t held Tsosie back. She was accepted into her “dream school,” Dartmouth College, to study psychology in the fall.

It’s hard because obviously I haven’t really seen my friends and I miss them, but it’s nice that…the world has just slowed down, so you can take your time more with things. And overall, I have really loved my classes, even though they’ve been online.

the school’s music department for her sophomore year of high school.

She’s taken that same attitude into the pandemic, using the free time she would normally spend with friends to seek admission to no fewer than 25 colleges and universities. She says she’s been accepted to “about 50%” of them and she’s waiting to hear back from the rest before making a final decision on where she’s headed in the fall.

Her top choice so far is the University of Michigan.

“I really like that school and…I’ve just been attracted to it,” Sanchez says.

“I guess that’s kind of really cool that the pandemic has allowed me to, like, apply to a million colleges.”

Sanchez doesn’t know exactly what she wants to study yet. She’s torn between musical theater and political science. The latter, she knows, would support her tentative plan of studying law one day.

Until high school graduation, however, and potentially law school, Sanchez has had to figure out how to excel as a singer—completely online.

“We’ve been recording ourselves and just singing in our own houses, and then they’ve been adding in music and things like that or even adding our voices together,” Sanchez tells SFR. “It’s been kind of fun trying to get the angles and trying to record and get to sing your own songs…but it’s also kind of a challenge, because you have to

Basketball Motivation Jeremiah Aguirre Capital High School When UNM’s basketball team relocated to Texas in order to continue the season out from under New Mexico’s strict health orders, 18-year-old Jeremiah Aguirre knew then the chances of playing his senior year of basketball for Capital High School were nearly nonexistent.

“If a professional team or a highlevel team like that isn’t able to practice within the state, there’s no way that high school sports are even going to have a chance,” Aguirre says. “They have a lot more resources than we do.

They have daily tests. They have all that. And we don’t have none of that.”

Aguirre plays point guard. He’s been a Jaguars basketball player since his freshman year at Capital. It was a major part of his high school experience before the pandemic snatched it away last spring and has yet to fully give it back. (The team was able to practice some before the second lockdown in November.)

While the loss of his sport hasn’t impacted his college plans, Aguirre says not playing basketball has made focusing in school infinitely more difficult.

“A lot of the time I would use basketball as my motivation to get good grades,” Aguirre tells SFR. “Once it was taken from us and it was all up in the air…it put me down and it made it hard to stay on track.”

While Aguirre did struggle to stay motivated in the first semester of his senior year, he’s “figured things out” by now—just in time to graduate and decide on a college or continue to run his online business—or maybe both.

He’s spent a lot of time during the pandemic growing his buy-sell-trade shoes business, KrypticKickz, via Instagram.

In this quiet period of transition, he’s still waiting to hear back from several colleges he’s applied to and spending time with family—one of the few pluses of the pandemic for Aguirre. He likes that his parents and siblings aren’t tired after a long day away from home, leaving more time for meaningful interaction.

“There are very few people I have talked to during this time,” Aguirre tells SFR. “I was never really a social type of person…like I was able to chill by myself and stuff like that. But now during this, I wasn’t able to do it even if I wanted to. I feel that I need to go and socialize with more people. Now more than anything, I feel disconnected from a lot of the world, seeing them through a phone screen or a TV screen.”

have the equipment and the devices to be able to record yourself on and also make music.”

It’s nowhere near the same as practicing in person. Sanchez wants to go back to class in person, even if it’s only for a few weeks. She says it would be “sad” to have an entire year completely online, not to mention inconvenient. Both of her parents are essential workers—her mom is a saleswoman at Dillard’s and her dad is a night manager at FedEx—so she occasionally had to park out front of a McDonald’s to attend class and do her homework by herself. (Sanchez’s and her younger brother’s online classes both going at the same time have occasionally been too much for their home internet connection.)

Among the positives of the stay-athome orders for Sanchez: time with family and a new perspective on life.

And she hasn’t had to wait even a minute to open the acceptance letters from colleges.

“I really enjoy spending more time with my family, even though they’re both frontline workers. I really like staying at home,” Sanchez says. “I feel like it was a time for self-reflection and getting a hold of yourself. The pandemic didn’t really stop anything.…And especially during your senior year, you keep applying to everything and stuff, so it’s exciting to be here when you get the college letters, like, right away.”

Cowgirl Up Cowgirl BBQ is back up and running, and the outdoor music offerings are many

Back in November, Cowgirl BBQ ­owner/ chef Patrick Lambert announced the restaurant/music venue would shut its doors for three months to weather the COVID-19 business slowdown. Cut to today, and as cases drop, vaccinations rise and locals get ready to resume their bustling lives, the longtime music and dining hotspot is back at it with a new online ordering system and a full slate of live entertainment offerings—all of which, of course, go down with safe masking and social distancing practices.

“We are back!” says Lambert. “We reopened on March 1, and that’s really been our message—that we’re back— and we decided we were going to commit to a music calendar right away. We came back with a new website; and the music calendar stretches as far as we’re booked.”

Just this week alone, you’ll find ­patio performances from Matt Jones, DK Warner, Kyle Martin, Bill Hearne and more, and though Lambert says the majority of performers will play in solo

or duo form, the same vibe for which the ol’ C-Girl is known remains intact.

That means rock and country and country-rock, Americana, covers, originals, lots of acoustic guitars and who even knows what else yet.

Even better?

“Over 90% [of employees] came back,” Lambert says, “and it’s the ­employees who have made the level of business tenable—we have the most incredible staff—but the outpouring of support from the community is enough to make you cry. It’s been such fabulous support.”

@505punx Instagram account provides glorious trip down memory lane for Santa Feans of a certain era

E

ven before the pandemic shuttered us in our homes, effectively ending live music for over a year, many in Santa Fe would be quick to point out that even the sweetest of shows over the last handful of years have been nothing—no, nothing—compared to the halcyon days of yore. Once upon a time, the punks roamed the Earth, promoting DIY shows at the old Railyard space, Warehouse 21, private residences, Rockin’ Rollers and anyplace else electricity could reach. We’re talking the 1990s and early aughts, buds, and it was everything.

Certainly this is said with rose-colored glasses—though I was there for much of these goings-on and can confirm it was basically nonstop good times—but with the new instagram account @505punx, all those memories can come flooding back through a fledgling but growing and evolving archive of community-driven content. And honestly? It’s excellent.

The project is helmed by an anonymous former Santa Fean. Suffice to say I sleuthed out who’s behind the page (and others might, too), but they prefer to be unknown so the page can be about ­community rather than one person’s contributions. Usually, I’d insist a subject go

on the record with their name, but in this instance, our anonymous admin makes a strong case: “It’s not about me,” they tell SFR. “It’s us. It’s ours.”

The whole thing begins with the­ @punkhouseoakland Instagram account, another scene retrospective page wherein Bay Area punk history comes to life through myriad photos.

“I was looking at that and figured, I have quite a few photos—why doesn’t New Mexico have this?” the @505punx admin says. “New Mexico, in the late ’90s, had one of the best scenes in the country. So it’s fun, it’s weird and it’s a little sad—a lot of these people are gone—but I’m also getting so many submissions I can’t keep up.”

Some of those submissions have come from Jasper Schriber, a former Santa Fean living in New York City (who, full disclosure, played bass in my wildly mediocre punk band when I was a teen) who found a whole stack of photos from Warehouse 21 shows during a recent move.

“It’s cool to share those with people, and for [@505punx] to put them out there,” he says. “Plus the pictures I hadn’t seen, but with people I know—or pictures of shows I went to, but maybe I was on a different side of the room….It’s like experiencing this stuff again for the first time.”

Javier Romero, formerly of indie band Mistletoe and today the driv-

ing force behind the project Strange Magic, has similar feelings.

“I’ve never considered myself ‘punk,’ but seeing all the friendly and familiar faces makes me happy to have been strongly punk-adjacent and part of an awesomely inclusive and fun scene,” he says.

“Despite my being affiliated with ‘out’ music, the punk scene of the ’90s in New Mexico was my incubation,” says Carlos Santistevan of High Mayhem Emerging Arts. “The interesting thing is that now, everyone has a camera in their back pocket.

Back then, no one thought about bringing a camera with them. Seeing these photos really makes me realize how well cellphones allow historical documentation of a scene.”

Musician and former Santa Fean Sonny Reinhardt (son of Warehouse 21 founder Ana Gallegos y Reinhardt, and today a member of Bay Area metal band Necrot) has submitted numerous photos as well.

and sadness,” he tells SFR. “Add in seeing pictures of good/bad times, exes, friends who used to be friends and just all-around missing those times of giving way less of a shit is bringing many different feelings— but ultimately it’s been a really great window into the past. I know there’s a ton of old photos waiting to be unearthed, and it’s been super cool that it’s growing more and more.”

If the curator behind @505punx gets their way, submissions will keep rolling in and a more fleshed-out product might soon become available. If they can secure funding, they say, they’d like to create a book. Would such a book have legs outside the immediate Santa Fe community?

Schriber says it would.

“I would read a book about a smalltown punk scene that wasn’t one I grew up in,” he says. “I think that in the same way these scenes can all feel the same, they’re all so very different. It’s people who don’t belong finding a place to belong, and that’s such an inspiring place to be. That’s what I love about punk music.”

“I also hope this doesn’t become just a historical site, but is a living page that maybe can help resurrect the incredible scene and enthusiasm that existed back then,” Santistevan says. “The closest thing I see currently is the metal scene now, but I hope we can see that same energy when live music returns.”

For now, @505punx is on the lookout for any photos or fliers from the height of Santa Fe punk culture. Scour your basements, bug your friends and check in on your long-dormant social media accounts, just in case.

“I’m growing a pretty decent archive of the scene,” says our mystery admin. “I have enough content to keep it going for a little while, but it will only grow as long as we contribute.”

Arkansas to Santa Fe: The Little Free Pantry

ayetteville, Arkansas, refers to itself as “the track capital of the world.” So it’s fitting the idea for a Little Free Pantry (like the Free Little Library, but for food) came to Jessica McLard on a run as she passed by one of the small, ­community-run book depositories. Like New Mexico, Arkansas faces high levels of food insecurity—but those Little Free Libraries are plentiful, according to McLard.

“I really started to think about them and what was going on in that space,” she says. “They do a good job of accomplishing their mission in increasing access. They are everywhere, in all kinds of neighborhoods. Something resonated about that concept, above and beyond its mission.”

Years down the line, after a small setup at her local church, McLard’s Little Free Pantry concept boasts hundreds of pickup locations across the country. The ripple effect from that daily jog is felt in Santa Fe, too, and set up outside St. Bede’s Episcopal Church (550 W San Mateo Road, 982-1133)—one of the eight Little Free Pantries in Northern New Mexico, a region where the nonprofit Feeding America finds a 15.1% food insecurity rate.

“It’s more of a stopgap measure, not intended to be a major source of food,” Rev. Catherine Vollard, rector of St. Bede’s, tells SFR. “But there’s different reasons we struggle. Maybe you’re overwhelmed, you can’t get to the grocery store this week. Let’s help you with your meal tonight, maybe your lunch ­tomorrow. There’s no shame....It’s a stopgap measure.”

And it’s a stopgap measure that Vollard says has done fairly well.

“We move impressive amounts of groceries every day. We have a core group of volunteers who stop by at least once a day to make sure it’s stocked,” she explains. “But the greatest success story is that people in the community have picked it up, and a lot of those people have no connection to the church.”

St. Bede’s pantry popped up in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as Vollard wanted to continue the church’s long history of assistance to members and non-members alike. It’s also accessible day or night and, since then, Vollard says she’s observed people constantly coming and going.

“Some of them stop to talk, some of them want their privacy,” she says. “We get notes from people, very sweet notes of appreciation, sometimes even gifts, little handmade items.”

ers, are not enough and not a long-term solution. Some aren’t even particularly accessible.

“Some pantries use means testing, and folks are living paycheck to paycheck,” McLard says. “Sometimes people live where [food pantries] are only open a couple of days a week. Folks fall through those gaps. I hear from people all the time—I got an email from a woman yesterday who lost her job in November, and in between unemployment she said she was able to eat.”

McLard praises Santa Fe’s sole Little Free Pantry, noting that it follows one of the most important rules she’s learned over the years: location, location, location.

“The essential challenge of the project is that,” she says. “What I’ve seen is that the best locations are privately owned but publicly operated entities. Churches, schools, nonprofits, places with ample parking.”

parking lot doesn’t mean one has to be religious in order to give—but she leans into scripture to express how giving just a small amount on a regular basis is a common, age-old practice.

“There’s a lot of precedent throughout history. In scripture, they talk about gleaning the fields—give just a little extra at the end, knowing there are others who can’t help themselves,” she explains.

“Burdens need to be shared, but it doesn’t have to feel like one. One can or package each time you went to the grocery store would revolutionize the whole thing.”

“Think about how much supply there would be if shoppers just picked up one can during their grocery runs. It would be hugely impactful,” McLard advises. “I’ve even seen people who use the pantry between paychecks and then put food back when they can. It really only works if it’s a collaborative effort.”

Meanwhile, Vollard is concerned that assistance for undocumented people, who aren’t eligible for stimulus programs, will wane as the pandemic does.

Pew Research found an estimated 60,000 undocumented residents in New Mexico in 2016. She encourages people to keep on giving, even as a perception arises that things are getting better. Insecurity, she says, can still trail recovery for people on the economic margins.

“If anybody wants to stop by with something, they can do that,” says Vollard. “We have an overflow bin by the door of the church if the pantry is full. If you want to stop by, great. If you want to volunteer to be on the schedule to manage the pantry for a day, we’ll do that too.”

You can delve into any culture on the planet and find a rich canon of ghost and demon lore, but there’s something that hits deeper about the ancient ones. In director Keith Thomas’ debut The Vigil, we catch a glimpse into the Jewish concept of mazzikim—what we might call a mid-tier ghost or demon that, within the confines of the film, feeds off the pain of mortals. There’s more to unpack there as far as the real-world lore goes, but here we just know the entity is malevolent.

We join Yakov (Dave Davis), a young Jewish man who left a more devout lifestyle and ­community following tragic events. He struggles with money and mental health, so when someone from his old life shows up with $500 and asks him to perform shomer duties (a Jewish tradition whereupon someone must sit with a newly dead body through the first night following the death to protect a departing soul from evil forces). Yakov reluctantly agrees, but creepy stuff ensues as something begins stalking him, toying with his mental illness and forcing him to question his own sanity and beliefs.

Cohen) lived with his wife (Lynn Cohen), is ­oppressively dark and unsettling, and numerous lamps fail to cast light beyond their own immediate vicinity. It seems Rubin may have brought something with him back from the Buchenwald concentration camp following WWII, and Mrs. Litvak roaming the halls and popping up now and again doesn’t help. Somehow worse, the being begins assuming the voice or appearance of those Yakov trusts and tries to reach by phone for help.

Davis is a wonder in the darkness, all pins and needles and pained expressions driven not only by the imminent ghost peril, but haunted by the tragedy which shook his faith (no spoilers).

Carrying a film on one’s own is hard work, doing it with minimal dialogue seems even harder. And so it goes, with Yakov jumping at each new discovery that appears throughout the longest night ever and Davis’ masterful performance keeping us rapt.

As debuts go, Thomas excels in most areas.

There’s a high bar of entry here for those unfamiliar with Jewish traditions or stories—and even for those with a passing knowledge. It would have been nice to dig deeper into those ideas, though perhaps there’s something to be said about the thing you don’t know being the scariest thing of all. Still, the language of scares is fairly universal, and The Vigil’s most intense moments are almost always its most unique. Here’s hoping Thomas keeps going with horror and here’s hoping any fans of the genre don’t skip this one, even if it’s not

By the time we join Breaking News in Yuba County’s Sue Buttons (Allison Janney), she’s having a pretty rough day. It’s her birthday, her coworkers forgot, the cake she was forced to buy herself reads “Happy Birthday Suc!” and her husband Karl (Matthew Modine), a banker, is on the phone with some mysterious woman who asks if he’s stroking his cock right now. He isn’t—not in that moment­­ —­but he’s still a scumbag. Sue feels overlooked, unappreciated, unimportant. Those feelings fester.

Elsewhere, Karl’s brother Petey (Westworld’s Jimmi Simpson) attempts to leave a life of crime behind following news that his live-in girlfriend (Samira Wiley) is pregnant with twins. The bored but funny business owner who hired him (Wanda Sykes) needles Petey about forming a crime partnership, while the mobbed-up Mina (Akwafina) pressures him to get Karl to launder money.

Still with us? OK. It’s complicated, but director Tate Taylor (The Help) so masterfully and gradually sets up the powder keg that when the disparate storylines and characters clash together in a violent but hilarious ballet of misconceptions, misunderstandings and missed opportunities, it’s

almost perfect. Karl suddenly disappears, which thrusts Sue into the high-profile world of press conferences and local news appearances courtesy of some twee human interest reporter (Juliette Lewis) and Sue’s own sister (Mila Kunis), a lesser journo.

Janney nails it as the put-upon wife finally getting some attention—even if it’s bad attention.

She knows what really happened to Karl, but isn’t spilling so long as the camera crews keep turning up. Eventually, she starts to believe her own lies just as the peripheral madness topples in on all the central players.

From there, Yuba County starts to lose its momentum. Regina King sings as the dogged detective convinced Sue is hiding something, though her screen time is sadly limited. Ellen Barkin’s in the mix, too, but barely—and, in the end, one wonders why Janney or Akwafina aren’t in every single scene even if Simpson has often proved a capable and funny performer and doesn’t disappoint here.

Still, the ending feels rushed and shoehorned with a lot of dark ideas that didn’t quite fit elsewhere in the complex plot. From a relatively new writer like Amanda Idoko, though, Yuba County feels like a big breakthrough. Surely her next film’s narrative will feel even more refined, and this one is so fun to watch, its shortcomings feel far less important than its many strengths.

BLU was rescued from a “high kill” shelter earlier this year after he was diagnosed with early kidney disease. At the time of his rescue, he was in very rough shape. His rescuer changed his diet to “kidney friendly” and added Epatkin powder to his wet food. He is now robust and ready for a new home. BLU is very social and likes to play with younger cats.
