Candelero homeowners have serious concerns about this project and would appreciate a fair treatment of the very real issues—density, run off, traffic congestion, view disruption, lack of affordability, impact on Zia-St. Francis intersection, etc.—rather than just the developer’s very self-interested side of the story.

One gentleman in the article was homeless for five years while on a waitlist for housing!

Santa Fe needs to stop pandering to the wealthy retired out of staters that move here “for the culture” and address the rapidly accelerating gentrification it’s feeding into.

WHAT’S ART MESSAGE? While Leah Cantor’s article is informative and thought-provoking, the accompanying cover art and sidebar graphic are examples of what’s wrong with how many educators think about teaching and learning.

Sure, all three kids have “equity,” but all three are excluded from what they are focused on. The graphic on page 12 shows three dark-skinned kids looking over a board fence at a baseball game. Why aren’t they inside the park? Being able to equably view what you can’t have access to is pretty much what education looks like right now.

Kids can see what’s possible, but no one’s providing the funding and child-centered focus required.

The cover art is almost worse. We can’t see skin color or facial features, but they could easily be a mix of Latin and Anglo.

Instead of a board fence, they are peering over a high, very solid-looking brick wall.

What are we keeping them from, why is there a wall, and why are they not on the other side of it?

The pictures stick in the mind, while the words can be forgotten. The lasting public image of the school district’s approach to educational equity is not, I think, the one they’d like to have us remember. Perhaps your talented art department can brew up something more hopeful?

Affordable Housing Firsts Airport Road development that will include affordable units could change the conversation on housing

A

three-story apartment complex that earned approval last week from the Planning Commission represents a number of firsts for the corner of Airport and South Meadows roads.

If approved by City Council, the proposed development will include the first drivethrough coffee shop on the busy thoroughfare, a medical center, a pool and 233 apartments.

It would also be the first rental development in Santa Fe to include 15% affordable units onsite in accordance with the city’s development rules, rather than simply paying a fee-in-lieu.

The project comes on the heels of changes to the city code that aim to make onsite affordable units a more attractive option for developers, while incrementally increasing the amount they would have to pay for fee-in lieu over the next few years.

Housing advocates say the proposed Airport Road development might signal a change in direction for affordable housing in a city that is growing increasingly less livable for the average New Mexican.

The Santa Fe Housing Action Coalition estimates that the city is at 100% functional occupancy—meaning that rental units are being turned over as soon as they become available—and says more than 1,000 families earning less than $35,000 left between 2016 and 2018. According to data from the US Census Bureau’s ongoing American Community Survey, in 2018, 86% of Santa Fe households

earning less than $50,000 a year were spending more than 30% of their income on housing, up from 73% two years prior.

An affordable housing task force convened by Mayor Alan Webber when he took office determined about $3 million is needed annually to fund the city’s affordable housing trust, which is used to build affordable developments and pay for other housing programs.

The coalition, which won a grant last month that will be used to identify sources for that money, includes the Chamber of Commerce, both hospitals, real estate industry groups, Santa Fe Public Schools and most of the city’s homeless shelters and affordable housing providers.

Daniel Werwath, executive director of New Mexico Inter-Faith Housing and one of the coalition’s founders, tells SFR the diverse set of groups is involved to address negative impacts that come when working families are priced out of areas, such as lost tax revenue, purchasing power and per-pupil school funding.

The new Airport Road development, the change to the fee-in-lieu structure and the housing trust fund are each a different piece of the puzzle. Werwath says that together they are building toward what he hopes will be a significant change in Santa Fe’s housing dynamic.

The new project off Airport Road will be the first to take advantage of the new incentives included in the development rule changes last fall.

One of the three partners behind the project, Raul Ramirez, spent years working for an affordable developer in Florida.

He says the change in the law played a role, but the partners were committed to affordability either way, and are already considering how to take advantage of a federal tax credit to include 20% affordable units in the next Santa Fe project.

Ramirez says commercial zoning, which will allow the project to build at a much higher density than in residential zones, is a key factor.

Neighbors, however, raised concerns that the density will lead to traffic congestion on South Meadows Road. Marnie Johnson, whose backyard would be adjacent to the development, also worried about decreasing water pressure in the neighborhood, “which already is sluggish in the mornings and evenings,” she told the commission.

Alexandra Ladd, director of the city’s Office of Affordable Housing, says Ramirez’ background and the project’s proximity to public transportation and walking distance from Sweeney Elementary School make it the perfect “guinea pig” to test the new rules.

She hopes other developers will follow suit, creating more options for people

who have good jobs but still can’t afford market-rate rents.

But if fewer developers are paying the fee-in-lieu, less money will be delivered to the city’s housing fund projects for the lowest income bracket, creating an even less consistent revenue source.

Already, inconsistent funding makes it hard for Ladd to secure long-term projects or partner with developers, she says.

Because the fund relies on the whims of the real estate market, the city can’t guarantee its funding into the future or its ability to pay for the upkeep of projects years down the line.

“It’s not just the cost of the initial housing or building it that’s the problem.

It’s keeping it going, maintenance, program costs, et cetera,” she says. “That’s part of why a consistent revenue stream would just make things so much easier.”

Last year, the fund gave around $460,000 to groups that help youth and adults struggling with homelessness such as The Life Link, sober living facilities and transition programs, and mortgage payment assistance and first-home buyers’ programs.

The city also donated a piece of land worth $1.3 million to Inter-Faith Housing for the Siler Yards affordable housing project.

Ladd tells SFR this year there’s about $1 million in the fund from an uptick in development across the city, but that number could tank if the economy slows.

Werwath tells SFR the $330,000 grant from a group of local entities that includes the Santa Fe Community Foundation and Nusenda Credit Union will pay for a two-year policy project to determine “a laundry list” of funding sources and build community support.

Voters rejected an attempt in 2009 to secure funding for affordable housing by charging an extra tax on the sales of lux luxury homes. A majority of voters in City Council Districts 1 and 2 were against the measure, while a majority of voters in Districts 3 and 4 were in favor.

Werwath says that kind of tax could be on the table but is far from the only option. Others include the “previously uncol uncollected [gross receipts tax] on short-term rentals,” for instance.

What makes this different from the last time, he says, is that so many different interests are working together to find a com common solution.

“It’s the right time—there’s the will and collaboration to do it, and we have to take that momentum and go as far as we can with it,” he says.

Solarized Santa Fe

County installs 15th solar panel system to increase savings, decrease carbon dioxide

Construction is set to wrap at a Santa Fe County complex in Eldorado in May.

n a step to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Santa Fe County began construction on the solar photovoltaic system at its buildings in Eldorado, one of the West’s most solarized communities.

By the end of April, the project should be producing solar energy, sooner than the county’s end date of May 30.

A photovoltaic system uses multiple solar panels connected to each other, called a solar array, to produce energy.

The Eldorado site will have 192 solar panels, each with a 370-watt capacity.

The county’s complex at 16 Avenida Torreon includes the Ken and Patty Adam Senior Center and the Max Coll Community Center.

The solar project is the 15th county government edifice to get solar installations, and it won’t be the last. The Agua Fria and Rancho Viejo fire stations and the exhibition hall at Santa Fe County Fairgrounds are next, according to

county Sustainability Manager Claudia Borchert.

“As funding is available, we hope to continue installing solar systems in all county buildings where it makes sense and to incorporate photovoltaics into new buildings,” Borchert tells SFR via email.

She is also the project manager.

According to the county, the system will save $16,000 in electricity costs and the project has a 10-year return-on-investment with an expected savings of $250,000 after 25 years, offsetting 85% of the building’s electricity use. The solar array will also reduce 90 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, according to Borchert, about the same as planting 3,403 trees per year or removing 19 cars from the road for 12 months.

The project budget is $216,575 for a 71-kilowatt-hours ground-mounted photovoltaic system. Sol Luna Solar is the contractor.

While the county paid for this particular project at the complex, money for future projects will come from state capital outlay funds. Past solar projects

at Santa Fe fire stations earned funding from the state while others had their bill picked up by the county, depending on how much money the county got from the Legislature.

The county received $505,000 from the state in 2019 but only $325,000 in 2020 to solarize county facilities.

Borchert doesn’t know why the funding decreased this year.

“We didn’t receive any money [from the state] in 2017 or 2018,” Borchert tells SFR. “We did have another influx of capital outlay money… We certainly use up the money the state gives us with projects and we have a similar process with which we request money for projects in the county.

We request money and as it comes in, we then do what we can with it.”

Borchert says Santa Feans who use the facility are “supportive” and “understand the need for everyone to do their part in reducing our collective carbon footprint.”

The county also conducted an energy audit on the complex and will be “looking at ways to increase the building’s efficiency,” Borchert tells SFR.

According to the county’s 2019 Renewable Energy Progress Report, the 14 photovoltaic renewable energy installations that currently operate have almost 1.5 megawatts of production capability.

Since installations began in 2011, the systems have produced 12.6 million kWh of renewable clean electricity and saved Santa Fe County taxpayers over $1.5 million in electricity over the last nine years, according to the report.

The county also plans to add native trees and plants outside some of the buildings.

“As the county’s demand for energy continues to rise, solar power is one of the most abundant resources providing clean, cost effective energy without the toxic fumes and pollution,” District 5 County Commissioner Ed Moreno writes in a statement. The installation will be marked with an event to plant trees and other native drought-tolerant plants around the solar array project in May. The county plans to use the same planting strategy in each commission district, including the Arroyo Hondo Fire Station, the Pojoaque Valley Recreation Complex, the Santa Fe River San Isidro crossing and the Edgewood Senior Center over the next year.

Statewide, solar was a major point of focus for the 2020 legislative session. Senate Bill 29, signed into law March 3, reinstates a solar tax credit of no more than $6,000 or 10% of the costs of the solar panels themselves, as well as the costs of installation.

While the new law does not have a direct connection with the county’s solar projects, it will now play a more significant role with another part of the county sustainability department’s work, which is to help home and business owners solarize their properties.

“We are a technical assistance office to provide unbiased information to the community in how they can solarize their own home or business,” Borchert tells SFR via email. “The tax credit gives people even more incentive to solarize this year.”

Flat Earthers declare new church; scientists stand with the sphere

avid Gordon thinks most people are pointing their telescopes in the wrong direction. Instead of aiming for the stars, he says they should try pointing them across the surface of the Earth. The part-time Santa Fean is a full-time Flat Earther, and at the end of 2019 he decided the best way to protect his unconventional beliefs would be to establish a religion. So, he declared the formation of the Church of the Flat Earth and began hosting a monthly local meet-up.

Now, Gordon says anybody who believes the Earth was created by a higher power, and in the form of a flat plane rather than an oblate spheroid, is protected from religious discrimination.

The legality of this type of claim falls into something of a gray area, according to a prominent First Amendment attorney who spoke with SFR. Gordon tallies current church membership at somewhere approaching 100 people, most of them outside the Santa Fe area. How quickly his nascent flock grows remains to be seen.

1 in 50 Americans are firmly convinced the Earth is flat, and an additional 14% are undecided or skeptical. The same study shows the majority of Flat Earthers classify themselves as “very religious.”

Like many in the movement, Gordon believes the round Earth model is a conspiracy that can be disproved through personal observation. His path to Flat Earth theologian began in the spring of 2015, when he discovered a video series by prominent Flat Earther Mark Sargent outlining various “clues” to the Earth’s flatness. Inspired by one of these, Gordon took his telescope to the top of the mesa across from his house in Golden, Colorado, where he lives when not in Santa Fe, and pointed it horizontally to

a rocky outcrop 54 miles away. Based on his calculations, there were “2,000 feet of missing curvature.”

He recounts this formative moment at the Santa Fe Community College—where SFR invited him to view a large-scale projection of Earth in the round. Lean and windswept, with tousled white hair and faint white stubble on his jaw, he arrives in black cowboy boots, a leather jacket and a black baseball cap bearing a patch that reads: Flat Earth Ranger.

There is something of the cowboy to the man who was born into what he describes as “an aerospace family” in Cape Canaveral in 1959. Indeed, while Gordon now runs a company that sells a high-efficiency outdoor wood stove of his own design, he worked for a while training horses.

says. “When you push the horse around the pen, he is psychologically pushed away from the herd. In the horse’s case, they feel this fear because they are outside of the herd and they’ll be subject to predation. People are the same.”

If Gordon sees himself as circling in an orbit separate from the herd, the force propelling him there would be his strong sense of doubt. Describing himself as a “former NASA fanboy,” he was curious to visit and comment on the projection at the college. Science on a Sphere (SOS) is an initiative of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In a dedicated classroom on the SFCC campus, four projectors illuminate a 6-foot diameter globe with NASA satellite imagery and other programming.

Edwin Barker is chair of the local SOS program. A retired planetary astronomer who worked for NASA, Barker tells SFR that he and other facilitators can project real-time images of weather patterns, shifting tectonic plates and the migratory movements of GPS-tracked whales and sharks, as well as the surfaces of other planets.

“We even have an image that we can display of a flat Earth on the sphere,” Barker says. “But I can’t see how [people] can believe in a flat Earth with all the scientific knowledge we have. In particular

the astronauts that have gone around and around the world. We have firsthand knowledge that it’s round and not flat.”

Barker has staged programs for groups spanning from elementary school students to retirement homes.

“Something that happens when I have, say, fourth graders come in, is they say, ‘Wow! Wow! Wow! I didn’t know the Earth looked like that!’,” Barker says.

“There is a wow factor.”

For Gordon, too.

“Wow, that’s pretty impressive there, I’ve got to say,” he says upon beholding the luminescent globe in room 803. The room is darkened and otherwise empty.

He stands in front of the giant orb facing one of the projectors, with cloud patterns and the lower portion of Australia slowly traveling across his face.

His appreciation for the technological aspects of the projection does not translate to an acceptance of the veracity of what he is viewing.

“It’s just perpetuating a massive fraud, and there’s reasons for it,” Gordon says flatly. “They don’t want people to think independently.”

Posing for a photo, he assumes an incredulous expression, holding one arm sideways across his body. “Mark Sargent and I invented it,” he says of the hand signal. “It’s called the flatty.”

After the viewing, Gordon explains how his personal revelation that curvature was a myth led to a greater unraveling. Now he considers everything from gravity and evolution, to the existence of dinosaurs and the occurrence of the Dark Ages, to fall into the category of hoax.

“It all came together with the Flat Earth thing,” he says. “We’re told to deny our senses. Science—or as we term it, scientism—is its own religion in which you must believe, period. You must believe the Big Bang, everything they tell us.

Otherwise, you’re a crazy fool.”

Like many Flat Earthers, Gordon relies on visual evidence to bolster his theories, and devotes equal energy to challenging the visual evidence provided by the opposition. Pulling out his MacBook, he shows SFR an image of the moon landing. He adjusts the brightness and contrast to show

what he claims is a square of acetate pasted in after the fact to falsely depict Earth.

Then he shares video footage of the star Arcturus, shot with a Nikon P900—a camera nicknamed “the globe killer” by some Flat Earthers because its powerful zoom lens can capture distant astronomical objects. His screen displays a colorful, filamented geometric shape.

“Every time I pause it, it maintains a structure, but the color changes,” he says.

“What the hell is that? It’s surely no ball of gas out there a gazillion miles away.

You couldn’t zoom in if it was so far away.”

Gordon continues clicking through the stills intently, as if seeing them for the first time. “Somebody said it looks like a book. But it maintains its structure.”

His voice lowers, almost to a whisper: “But why is it flashing?”

wrote her thesis on “stellar evolution and habitable exoplanets.” Her office adjoins the planetarium, which is lined with telescopes of all sizes. Being indoors in storage, their lenses are not angled in any particular direction.

Before SFCC hired her to teach astronomy and revitalize the school’s planetarium, she worked at Los Alamos National Lab in the field of planetary defense.

“You could kind of describe it as the plot of Armageddon…literally gearing up an arsenal of nuclear weapons to shoot at asteroids,” she says.

When asked about the Flat Earth community, Truitt comes ready with a zinger: “The only thing they have to fear is sphere itself.”

Her full takeaway of the movement is more nuanced. She calls Flat Earthers “free-thinkers,” and concedes that it is important to question why we be-

lieve something to be true. However, she says, “It’s almost like they’re so open-minded that everything is equal… At the surface level, that’s good, you shouldn’t just omit an idea because you don’t agree with it for whatever biased reason. But you need a way to systematically rule things out. I think where the Flat Earth movement gets sort of tripped up is that they ignore very good evidence that we’ve systematically curated over a long time.”

Truitt’s desk is strewn with a Rubik’s cube, magnets, astronomy textbooks and the National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Night Sky. Her dedication to science and education kept her up grading papers until 4:30 am the day before. This passion might explain why she sees “serious harm” in efforts aimed toward undermining science—especially those that purport to follow the scientific method.

“Real science is being defunded every day because more and more people don’t see the value in it. And that’s when society can start to break down, because we are dependent on science and technology,” she says.

Truitt ponders Gordon’s accusation that the scientific community would intentionally keep the public in the dark.

“It’s not like scientists are all in on it, like we need to prove that the Earth is round. Why? Why would we lie and say it’s round, if it was flat?”

Moving next door, she fires up the various systems of the planetarium to provide a visual, scientific perspective of the Earth’s roundness. The old control board looks to be about the same vintage as the early Apollo missions, with various metal toggle switches and sliders labeled, somewhat modestly, “Earth,” “Sun,” “Moon.”

Much of this equipment is obsolete.

Under Truitt’s stewardship, the school updated the planetarium to run off a loaded iPad. Now she uses an Xbox controller to give a tour of the solar system. Starting with a simulated view from the planetarium’s exact location, Truitt speeds up time to create a “star trail” image of the night sky. The vast, domed screen overhead changes, gradually overtaken in Van Gogh-like swirls of light.

“Photographers can do this with long exposure over the course of the night, a time lapse of the motion of the sky that shows how things are rotating,” Truitt says.

“It appears like things are rising and setting but you can always find the North Star.

It’s always stationary in the sky relative to

everything else because it’s aligned with Earth’s North Pole, its rotational axis.”

What does this reveal? “We are a big spinning circle.”

Next she zooms in on the Galilean moons of Jupiter, explaining that someone does not need a sophisticated telescope, let alone a planetarium operating system, to observe these moons orbiting Jupiter over the course of several days. A simple pair of binoculars will suffice.

Truitt says Galileo’s observation of these moons in the 1600s provided some of the first evidence that the Earth is not at the center of the solar system, by showing that other bodies can be observed orbiting in space.

“The same physical principles extend throughout the universe,” Truitt concludes. “Why should we be any different, is kind of my thinking. It comes back to wishful thinking that somehow Earth is special or we are special or something. But I don’t really subscribe to that idea.”

Separation of church and deep state Bob Knodel does subscribe.

An IT contractor with an engineering background, Knodel is well-known in the Flat Earth community as the co-host of the “Globebusters” YouTube channel, which has garnered some 6 million collective views. He became an early member of the Church of the Flat Earth and is considering joining the board of directors.

“The bottom line is that there is a creator. This place was made for us. We are special,” Knodel tells SFR from his home in Denver.

The structure and perfection of nature convinced him that there was a creator, he says, providing the metaphor of someone bombing a Scrabble factory and the pieces landing in the form of a perfectly conceived work by William Shakespeare.

“As an engineer, obviously I’ve always valued the scientific method,” Knodel says. “However, even before I found Flat Earth it was patently obvious to me that

this world could not have possibly evolved as a product of random chance.”

The theory of intelligent design finds itself ensconced in the preamble of the Church of the Flat Earth’s homepage.

It calls the Earth “a created realm,” but refrains from defining its creator, saying this should be left to the individual.

The preamble also makes explicit why Gordon founded the church in the first place: as a means of combating perceived harassment.

Knodel agrees that many Flat Earthers set themselves up for ridicule or worse when sharing their beliefs. Sounding both aggrieved and frustrated, he states, “You could say you believe in little green men from Narnia and people would say, ‘Whatever,’ and walk away.” However, if you tell them the Earth is flat, “That triggers a response in people that’s visceral, vitriolic. It’s palpable. They absolutely go bananas over it. It’s like you shot their dog or something.”

According to Knodel, this reaction, as well as the perpetuation of the round Earth mythos, is the result of “a programming mechanism.” Who is in charge of the program? “That’s pretty easy. The entity and the people behind that are the ones that belong to the secret societies.”

His examples: the Freemasons, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Vatican.

Knodel says he has received death threats and lost job contracts due to his beliefs, particularly since appearing in a Netflix-acquired documentary entitled Behind The Curve. In a pivotal sequence, Knodel experiments with a $20,000 fiber optic gyroscope that seems to confirm the Earth’s rotation at the scientifically predicted rate of 15 degrees per hour.

“I have the dubious distinction of being the only person in the world that proved the Earth’s rotation. Now frankly I think I should get a Nobel for that,” Knodel says sardonically.

Most of the so-called “aether theories” posit some sort of medium through which light propagates in space.

Einstein’s special theory of relativity is now conventionally used to challenge these theories by demonstrating that space can exist as a vacuum.

After the movie came out, Knodel says he lost a long-held IT contract with a religious nonprofit called Mission’s Door.

SFR contacted Rick Miller, president of Mission’s Door, to ask why Knodel’s contract was not renewed.

“We knew he had some unusual views,” Miller says, with a wry laugh.

“But it did not seem to impact his IT competency. He’s good at what he does, and we liked Bob.” The decision, Miller says, came down to expanding from a one-person company to a larger tech firm, rather than as a result of Knodel’s “unusual views.” (Two other such views that came up in the SFR conversation with Knodel were the “9/11 Truth movement” and a belief the ancient Egyptians had access to modern technologies like helicopters.)

When Gordon declared that there was a Church of the Flat Earth, Knodel was intrigued by the possibility of claiming religious protections for perceived discrimination.

“I started looking at it from a legal standpoint and saying, ‘Oh, wow, there we go,’” he recalls. “Now you have some sort of legal recourse where you can go back and sue on a constitutional type of basis. It’s for that reason that I support this idea.”

The Church is not a 501(c)(3), nor does Gordon intend to seek that status.

There is no physical building, no rites of worship. “The church is a piece of paper in my file at home. That’s all it has to be,” Gordon says.

To probe whether any person with strongly held opinions can simply write them out as religious doctrine and declare them to be protected under the Constitution, SFR contacted Martin Esquivel, an Albuquerque-based attorney who specializes in First Amendment issues.

“I don’t know the answer to that question,” Esquivel says. “I think the law protects not only people who belong to traditional organized religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, but also others that have sincerely held religious and ethical beliefs.”

Emphasizing that he’s speaking generally and not to the specifics of the Church of the Flat Earth, he adds, “That line of demarcation is not clear, but I

think federal law realizes that the more traditional organized religions are not exclusive when it comes to the issue of religious discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.” In addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Esquivel references the establishment and free exercise clauses of the First Amendment, which read, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Both of these items are quoted in the Church of the Flat Earth’s foundational document, in which Gordon declares the creation of an unincorporated, organized, self-supported church ministry.

To his surprise, this declaration was not met with universal enthusiasm within the Flat Earth community.

“Here’s the funny thing,” Gordon says. “I’m kind of ostracized from the ostracized Flat Earth group for having done this. Nobody wants to talk to me just lately. It makes them uncomfortable, even within our ostracized movement of people who are tricked out of the norm.”

He understands their skepticism—after all, that is the primary quality uniting the Flat Earth movement. “All of us have seen the worst of hierarchical church religious organization. Obviously there’s a tremendous amount of damage that has been done in the name of religion, so everyone’s gun shy about that. I had a lot of folks say, we don’t want to make Flat Earth a religion. Well, I didn’t. I made belief in Flat Earth a religion, if you wish.

Nobody has to join.”

His comment found an unlikely echo in Truitt’s approach to sharing her scientific convictions. She too wants to open people’s minds, but without proselytizing.

“I wish I could show the Flat Earth movement the planetarium,” she says, wondering whether its members would benefit simply from being exposed to a rigorous science lesson. “Maybe having that opportunity would be really cool.

But we’ll never know if we can’t talk to each other.”

ands up!” the woman said to me. “Hands up!” she repeated.

She was traveling up the escalator; I was heading down, ready to exit Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, where I’d spent most of Saturday covering the New Mexico Democratic Party’s pre-primary caucus. It took me a moment to realize the good Samaritan was warning me not to put my hands down on the escalator handrail. I’m fairly certain I only realized this because the woman in front of me was holding a rather large sign and the side facing me read: “Coronavirus: Making the Case for Single Payer & Paid Sick Days.”

I had wondered, as I drove north that morning, whether the emergence of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 would impact the day’s activities. What was an election season without politicians shaking hands? Would candidates don face masks while making their cases to delegates? Would the casino be empty as older smoking gamblers stayed home to avoid exposure?

No, no and no would be the answers to those idle questions. Seemingly chipper people smoking and gambling on a beautiful Saturday morning filled the casino room through which I entered the building. Throughout the day, many folks shook my hand, the only notable excep exception being US Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-NM, who, if memory serves, greeted me with his elbow.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham menmen tioned the coronavirus at the end of her speech to the 1,200 delegates and candicandi dates in the room, telling them: “You’re going to wash your hands for 20 seconds.

I don’t know who created the meme that says ‘wash your hands like you just peeled a sack of green chile and you’re going to change your contacts,’ but that’s exactly right…I don’t want to see any hugs, any kisses, nothing. Alright? I want to see a lot of elbows out there because we keep each other safe by making sure we’re smart, and there isn’t anybody smartsmart er than the folks who are participating today in New Mexico’s Democratic party.”

I had waited all week for an easy bridge between politics and hyhy giene and the governor even dede livered. Still, smart or not, no one seemed to be heeding her advice.

In fact, most of the people I spoke with there and elsewhere throughthrough out the week seemed convinced the entire situation has been blown out of proportion.

As for me, I’d been washing my hands even more than usual and awkawk wardly offering people hand sanitizer

at inopportune moments, but failing at social isolation. Everywhere I’d been all week—events, restaurants, theaters—was packed. Were we in denial or having our last hurrah?

I put off writing this column until the last minute, convinced the state Health Department would announce at any moment that New Mexico had its first case (that has yet to happen as of this writing on March 9). This was more pragmatic than defeatist, as state epidemiologist Michael Landen told me last week he expected the virus to emerge and spread here.

On the other hand, a health department spokeswoman told me, also on March 9, it’s possible the virus is already here and not yet detected. The state’s testing numbers per population (2.2 per 100,000) are between neighboring states Colorado and Arizona, but the state is working to increase testing, and is work-

At one point, Santa Fe musician Jono Manson thought he might be one of those tested, but because he’s symptom free, he wasn’t. I reported last week on Manson, who returned home at the end of February from recording and performing in Italy (where the outbreak has now shut down the entire country) and promptly self-isolated on the advice of the health department (which tells me they are monitoring several dozen other New Mexicans who returned from highrisk countries). Manson isn’t worried he’s sick, but he’s not taking any chances.

“If I got it, I’d get sick and get better because I’m healthy and have a strong immune system,” Manson told me, “but there are other people I come into contact with every day who aren’t in that categocatego ry. That’s the thing people really need to be concerned about, beyond themselves.”

I checked in with Manson again this week, who remains symptom free and ready to return home to his family on March 14. He’s been writing songs and productive using his time “creatively and productively,” he said. He’s also had plenty of time to think and was pondering the precautions he’d be taking when he goes back into the world. “The last thing I want is to leave this and go out and catch coronavirus,” he said.

I hope COVID-19 has been blown out min of proportion. But right now, at bare minimum, it’s a new virus with no vaccine spreading rapidly that has and will be lethal for some. Me? You? Maybe not.

But someone. Which is why those precautions—hand washing, social distancing, staying home when sick— self-preserva might be looked at less as self-preservation and more as the way we act when we care about other people.

TOYS IN BABELAND Recent-ish psychological proclamations have included waxing poetic on the power of play—an activity we sadly tuck away further with each passing year. Seriously, though, scientists say it’s good news for us to get into playing. Additionally, it so happens, the arts are good for our brains; good thing the Santa Fe Community Gallery has a show merging these concepts. At the upcoming PLAY/THINGS: The Iconography of the Toy, scads of artists attempt to ask how toys play a role in our creativity, what are the most sacred toys from their respective childhoods and does the idea of digital play affect our brains in the same way? In that time, Schafer has worked toward perfecting a certain type of ambient music, and it is not hyperbole to call it magic. No joke, during a recent event at Schafer’s space wherein he debuted new music, a certain SFR writer was in the midst of a rock ‘n’ roll panic attack of the highest caliber. Schafer’s calming and brilliant music—equal parts comforting soundscape and strangeness, field recording and found audio—calmed this person. But now Schafer’s headed home to Michigan, but not before one last performance featuring music and video.

Solarizing Casa Milagro New Energy Economy hosts fundraiser for local nonprofit that helps homeless, mentally ill people Casa Milagro, a 12-bedroom, six-bath nonprofit home for people who are both mentally ill and homeless, has provided dignified living to those who need it most since 1995, but it needs help going solar.

Enter New Energy Economy, another New Mexico nonprofit, with a series of fundraisers designed to help pay to completely solarize the Casa Milagro house on Santa Fe’s Southside as part of its next SOL for All! project. After installing the system, 101% of Casa Milagro’s annual electricity will be taken care of, effectively putting an end to electric bills.

“The SOL for All! project has been successful and, for community institutions, it makes it possible to cancel out their continuously rising electric bills,” says New Energy Economy Executive Director Mariel Nanasi. “They repurpose that money, and instead of it going to PNM and out-of-state shareholders, it goes back into their program needs.”

This particular fundraiser features a screening of the Sundance Official Selection film Bedlam: An Intimate Journey Into America’s Mental Health Crisis from

filmmaker Kenneth Paul Rosenberg, a challenging but vital look at mental illness today. After the screenings, a panel discussion dives deeper into the work of both Casa Milagro and New Energy Economy.

Homelessness in New Mexico has continued to rise over the last several years, a problem exacerbated by a dearth of clean and safe boarding homes for those with mental illness. Casa Milagro allows its residents to stay for life, as well as keep pets, though residents are required to have a job, pay rent and spend time in the community.

The total cost to solarize Casa Milagro is about $57,000, according to Nanasi.

“We had an audit done of how much it would cost...and we essentially got the complete buy-in [from the residents and administrators],” Nanasi tells SFR. “It was extraordinarily beautiful.”

Reading in the Arroyo: An Occasional Column about Books Santa Fe Noir, edited

A

noir sensibility is more of a feeling than a setting or a type of plot. Noir is defined by darkness, certainly, but even more so by duality. A noir story is as much about what’s illuminated by sunshine as what lurks in the shadows.

David Lynch tried to define this ineffability.

“Noir has a mood that everyone can feel,” he once said. “It’s people in trouble, at night, with a little bit of wind and the right kind of music. It’s a beautiful thing.”

In addition to its average 283 sunny days a year, Santa Fe is loomed over by the mysterious, majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains. In this way and many others, the City Different never lacks for a certain darkness—so the new short-story anthology Santa Fe Noir is a natural fit as the latest in a long line of city-centered noir titles published by Akashic Books.

“Too often the story of Santa Fe has been told only by the conquerors and the tourism PR firms,” editor Ariel Gore writes in the introduction, explaining the city’s close relationship to a particular murkiness. “Conquered and reconquered, colonized and commodified,

Santa Fe understands—from historical genocide to the murders of family members — the intimacy of violence.”

The anthology’s 17 stories examine the underbelly of the City of Holy Faith, swooping from Eldorado to Ten Thousand Waves to the abandoned St. Catherine Indian School, up to the Santa Fe National Forest and into a hotel room at La Fonda.

There is a real charm to the local specificity of Santa Fe Noir, and it’s a pleasure to discover how different imaginations can channel the chiaroscuro energy of well-known places. In Katie Johnson’s story “All Eyes,” the witchy log huts on the Aspen Vista Trail become an eternal haunt for a ghostly girlfriend.

Tomas Moniz imagines a topography of violence and resistance on a night drive between Albuquerque and Santa Fe in “I Boycott Santa Fe,” writing “all those deaths, all that history of violence, spreading across the desert. The arroyos.

The stories of Natives resisting US soldiers, of Chicanos resisting ranchers and hippies, of women resisting machista men.” In “SOS Sex” by Hida Viloria, the parking lot at Owl’s Liquors is the scene of a gruesome retribution. But after the

act is completed, the perpetrator walks down Hickox Street and quaffs an Angry Orchard Hard Cider on the warm, bright patio at the Tune-Up Café.

Perhaps the most engrossing story is Darryl Lorenzo Wellington’s “The Homeless Detective,” set in and out of the Interfaith Community Shelter at Pete’s Place on Cerrillos Road. Wellington’s vagrant hero, Leo Malley, is an unreliable narrator, a lifelong alcoholic who

is homeless after surviving a house fire.

Grappling with mental illness and PTSD, he’s been reading about mysteriously familiar-sounding murders in The Santa Fe New Mexican.

goes: “The street traffic surrounded him like swarms of locusts. The cars blazed like flashlights inside a pinball machine.

He bounced here, there, and back and forth, a pinball surrounded by sounds, brrnnngs.”

If the noir genre originally grew out of a World War II-era disillusion with humanity, then it certainly should find its way into commentary on the homeless situation in Santa Fe. Wellington lets the cognitive dissonance of the Pete’s Place counselors—“proposing plans, services, options”—sink in. “The Homeless Detective” reveals the absurdity of the precarious systems in place for people like Leo, as well as the hopeless futility of trying to piece back together a “house cat” sort of life, as Leo calls it, once it has crumbled to his circumstances. But despite his perch way out there on the margins of society and the $3.85 that defines his net worth, Leo knows something the police don’t. He might even be a hero.

These unexpected complexities make Santa Fe Noir worthwhile. The homeless man is either a killer or a savior, no one is simply good or bad, and facts and legends are inverted and complicated. In these pages, La Llorona is much more than a grief-stricken wanderer, she’s the historical conscience of a city.

“We have cried rivers of tears for all the children,” Israel Francisco Haros Lopez writes in a graphic novel treat treatment of the classic tale. “Don’t let the mad colonizer say our story is about a madwoman who killed her children. It’s more complicated than that. It always is…”

The New Mexico History Musuem’s new director has already been on the job since May 2019, but now it’s official: As of last week, the Department of Cultural Affairs dropped the “interim” from in front of Billy Garrett’s job title. Garrett oversees daily operations at the museum and at its other sites, the Palace of the Governors, Palace Press, Fray Angelico Chavez History Library, Palace Photo Archives and Portal Native American Artisans Program. SFR first met Garrett, a retired National Parks Service worker, when he ran for lieutenant governor in the last general election. We were happy to visit with him again to chat about the future for the history museum. (Julie Ann Grimm) What are your short-term and long-term strategies today that will matter most to the people of New Mexico?

We are installing more exhibitions. We are getting exhibitions in the museum on a regular rotating basis and the short-term is really something that has been accomplished effective today. We had the Herzstein gallery in the Domenici Building, the new part of the history building, was closed for more than a year, and we have a new exhibition in that space that is a really great exhibition. So being able to start getting some new exhibitions in the museum as a whole, I think, is really important. On the longer perspective, the next really big challenge we have is to finish the rehabilitation of the Palace of the Governors so we can start getting exhibitions and activity back into that building. I say that with a bit of an asterisk because we are going to allow programs in the building and have tours, so long as we can do that while working around construction activity.

The target date for its reopening seems to keep shifting.

What is going on at the Palace of the Governors?

The short answer is we don’t have the funding to do all the work that needs to be done so we are in the process of assessing where we are and in the process of getting that funding. This is absolutely going to be phased. We are moving forward as we have money to continue the work.

An important part of this is that we are done with a lot of the work that would have kept people out of the building.

So we can now allow tours and whenever I have the opportunity to make sure the building can be open for people, we are going to do that... We had Christmas at the Palace...

People loved it and we opened up some ad space for musical venues. We had four going on at the same time.

You served as a county commissioner in Doña Ana County but you moved to Santa Fe at some point. How does that geographical change inform your work?

I grew up in Las Cruces and then was fortunate to have a career with the National Park Service where I worked all over the country and then returned to Las Cruces. And the work I was doing as county commissioner, you are connecting with other counties and the work being done at state government. So, I developed a very good sense of what New Mexico is as a whole. ...As somebody from the south and the position I have now, I really want to be able to make sure this museum, as we put together exhibits and programs, we think about both audiences—people coming from other parts of the state to some degree want to see themselves in the exhibitions and hear about what they are doing too...I have always loved the north. And I have a deep love of my own homeland in the south.

Something Old, Something New Slow Caves comes to town with a new album firmly rooted in the past

C

olorado rock act Slow Caves might have just released their ­debut full-length Falling last year, but their sound is directly out of the mid-’90s alternative scene. The band is so entrenched in this sound, it feels as if they went through a checklist: Soft/loud song dynamics made famous by the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, and Silverchair? Check.

Alternating major/minor key changes between chorus and verse? Got those.

Beautiful guitar leads that scream peak Weezer? Oh, yeah. For ’90s teens, this is the kind of album that immediately transports you to that sophomore year in high school, walking to the bus stop with a Walkman turned to max volume, quietly humming to yourself while you dreamed about being as cool as Fairuza Balk in The Craft. And while Falling is dripping in alt-nostalgia, there’s more going on ­underneath the flannel shirt.

“We worked with [producer] Frenchie Smith, and he really helped us create that shoegaze sound,” bassist David Dugan tells SFR. “We write dreamier songs, but [Smith] opened our eyes to new worlds of distortion, reverbs and analog equipment that took us to a new level.”

Let’s back up a bit to contextualize that statement. In 2017, Slow Caves released

their first EP. Titled Desert Minded, those four tracks are so sonically different from Falling, I had to double check to make sure it wasn’t by a different band. Where I was expecting a less polished version of the songs found on the full-length, I was greeted with comparatively gentle summer-beach-type tunes—good, but ­ very different.

Dugan notes it wasn’t just the band working with a new producer, the sonic shift is also a product of Slow Caves going through different inspiration modes.

“When we put out our first EP, we were really inspired by surf rock,” he says.

“With this record, we fell in love with the ’90s vibe.”

Plenty of bands change their sound or bring in producers to help steer the ship to new territory, right? But what sets Slow Caves apart from the gaggle of other acts still knee-deep in the past is that they make it sound fresh, effortless and, most importantly, bloody good. Falling is an album that brings all of the joy and experimentation of ’90s alterna-rock while feeling genuinely invested in the details that made growing up in that era so exciting.

For example: During the final chorus of album opener Sorry, there’s this one drum fill and pinch harmonic occurring as emphasis. It never shows up before in the song, it’s never even telegraphed at any point in the preceding two minutes— it’s just there for a moment, but it feels so fun. I had to rewind the track a dozen times to take in this one tiny fill that might be a throwaway riff on any other record. Later in the album, Slow Caves

throws some gang vocals in the pre-­ chorus during the second verse of Falling Through The Clouds. This is, of course, a punk-rock staple, but once again, it’s an element that doesn’t show up before or after in the track. That’s a simple addition, but a very cool one.

And in a way, that’s what the ’90s were about: Taking pieces or ideas of established formulas and spinning them in clever ways to make tracks fresh. A producer can elevate a band, for sure, and Smith does just that, but these ­moments break down to chemistry and longevity; Dugan explains he has “known Oliver and Jakob [Mueller] for 10 years, and played music with them for most of that time.”

And, of course, no alternative album would be complete without some proper angst.

“When we were writing the record, we were going through some hard stuff,” Dugan says. “A lot of failed relationships, we were on the road for something like two years, quitting jobs, and putting school aside. We were bummed out and

vulnerable.”

And even though the songs might be born of personal difficulty, ­Dugan says Slow Caves found new meaning in performing them with friends.

“For me, instead of seeing the songs where they came from, it’s a happy thing,” he explains. “I feel like it’s been a coping mechanism. Now we’ve expressed ourselves, and when other people are singing them back to you, you can kind of feel that they’ve gone through the same sorts of things. That’s helped to get through stuff and came out better on the other side.”

So where does the road lead for Slow Caves? Who knows. They’re in the studio, recording a new album as we write, planning future tours and hoping for ­ possible successes. Still, Dugan says, “if it never gets bigger than this, I think we’re okay with that.”

ACTING OUT Crash Landings hen it comes down to it, how much responsibility do we have to take care of our fellow human beings? And perhaps more vexingly, how much can we take care of our fellow human beings, especially those whose agency dictates they make choices that won’t necessarily benefit them?

These are the questions left over after Ironweed’s production of The Aliens, Annie Baker’s remarkable play about friendship, isolation, estrangement and connection. Directed by Lynn Goodwin and starring three dependable local actors, the presentation also celebrates Ironweed’s 15th anniversary in Santa Fe, and marks another phase in a sea change for the company.

Largely known for its intricate productions of scripts by dead white guys (think Sam Shepard and Arthur Miller), Ironweed is striking a new direction lately under the leadership of founder and artistic director Scott Harrison.

Aiming now to tell stories more seldom expressed, The Aliens takes us to the back porch of a coffee shop in Vermont where three young men tell a different kind of coming-of-age story dominated by

mental illness, addiction and—for lack of a better word—heartbreak.

Mickey Dolan is Evan, a fresh-faced junior in high school who works at the shop (the play takes place out back, by the shop’s garbage cans). He comes across KJ (Niko’a Salas) and Jasper (Matt Sanford), CARRIE MCCARTHY

two vaguely college-age young men who have made the picnic table their default hangout spot, whether they’re allowed there or not.

The setting itself is beautifully done here, thanks to set design consultant Chadney Everett and master carpenter Ben Barthell. The place is ultimately believable, down to the spatters of dirt on the purple siding of the building and the teabags hanging on the fence. (Oh, and don’t be alarmed when you enter the theater and find yourself onstage; the door to the lobby becomes the door to the coffee shop, and vice versa.)

It’s clear that Evan is a bit of a loner at school. Jasper and KJ seem at first to take the kid under their collective wings, chatting with him and singing songs and inviting him to parties…albeit all very awkwardly. Yeah, something isn’t quite right here. But it doesn’t become clear until the Fourth of July, when Jasper snatches a bottle of alcohol out of KJ’s reach, and we learn more about the friends’ struggles with homelessness, family estrangement and mental illness.

THEATER

Salas and Sanford make a formidable pair as longtime buds whose friendship first appears fluffy and fun, but soon descends into darker territory. Especially remarkable is Salas’ portrayal of KJ’s dance on the brink of sanity; KJ is clearly an immensely intelligent and ultimately kind person, but we watch with trepidation as he reveals quirks and markers of his proximity to a mental break. He’s full of kinetic energy, ready to jump out of his skin, and Salas has perfected that one dude we all know who seems neurotypical for the first five minutes of any given conversation, but soon reveals more complex inner workings. The benefit of a tiny theater is that we see it all face-to-face, too.

Jasper, despite quiet seething, tries his best to be the more stable one of the two—but soon hits his own wall. Sanford’s depiction of the character’s struggle between his own harsh reality and a beautiful escapist world he’s created in his novel is masterful. My only hesitation with Sanford was that he seems too put-together, but isn’t it the truth that we so often never even know about someone’s demons until they’re overtaken?

Dolan’s Evan is ultimately lovable as the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed kid in desperate hopes of acceptance. He, along with an incredible script, perfectly captures the intensity of the high school brain. Everything matters, everything is important, everything is vital. Watching his emotional deflowering, as it were, is both sad and gratifying; he can’t necessarily help Jasper or KJ, but dammit if he doesn’t want to, and he’ll sure remember everything his “best friends” did for him that summer behind the coffee shop.

Whether the summer was the best or the worst is for us to decide.

A Lesson in Authenticity A semi-secret Southside restaurant deserves your full attention

I

’m cautious to use the phrase “holein-the-wall” to describe restaurants.

We’re not rodents, we’re human beings! What some call a hole is someone else’s whole livelihood, a place people show up to and take care of every day.

I suspect some critic coined the category to avoid taking these restaurants too seriously, to avoid seeing them as veritable temples of culinary arts, even if they are consecrated to diners in the working and immigrant classes.

Our city’s full of walls, physical and metaphorical. Lucky for us foodies, those walls are full of “holes” where we can have a pure and direct experience with food.

Some of the best cuisine is found far outside the downtown core, and by all indications, it’s only getting stronger.

One representative of this rising culture is the unpretentious yet authentic Chapin y Mex restaurant (6417 Airport Rd Ste. 100; 467-8289),, a well-kept secret that’s been open since 2017, but which only recently came onto my radar after a reader recommendation. “Authentic” is the restaurant’s own term to describe its Mexican and Guatemalan offerings, and while I often abhor that word in most contexts, it’s appropriate here—it’s not an empty catchphrase to attract tourists (which, frankly, seems to be the restaurant’s last concern) but a matter of national identity

and pride, of representing home and providing familiar, quality food to Santa Feans of Mexican and Guatemalan heritage.

The windows of Chapin y Mex feature blown-up decals of their dishes, which literally caused my mouth to water before I could get in the door. I can respect a restaurant that uses photos of its own food to create atmosphere—functional, colorful, maybe a little cocky? I’ll take almost anything besides a faux regional facade at this point.

The interior walls are completely decked out in bright murals depicting landmarks from across Guatemala and Mexico, wildlife and a prominent Pancho Villa astride a horse. I was greeted in Spanish and offered my choice of seating.

This being a bilingual city, I appreciated the expectation of communication in genSpanish, and my server was gen erously patient with my errors and spoke slowly enough for me to understand.

My friend and I were brought chips and salsa

immediately, and while I couldn’t sample the chips due to a recent awful experience with my wisdom teeth, I used them to scoop a simple salsa verde into my mouth.

The tomato-less salsa celebrates chile with a lingering heat that began to creep into the corners of my tongue, setting the stage for pops of roasted pepper.

The Chapin y Mex menu is split into several sections: standard Mexican breakfasts with things like chilaquiles de pollo ($9.75), huevos rancheros ($8.95) and breakfast burritos with your choice of bacon, ham, chorizo and sausage ($4.95).

ilarly large number of tortas, a rich seafood section and two sections each for main courses from Mexico and Guatemala.

My friend ordered a plate of Guatemalan staples: carne asada arrachera, fried bananas and mashed black beans topped with fresh, cotija-style cheese ($10.75). I settled for the chile rellenos with shrimp and sides of rice and refried beans ($12.75). My friend’s plate was simple, allowing each ingredient its own moment to shine with quality and rich flavor. The steak was well-marinated but a little tough, which is one of my only criticisms of the meal, but ultimately not unexpected from a thin flank steak. The bananas, on the other hand, were crispy on the outside, sweet and almost bready and covered in a light cream sauce. She was surprised to find the beans were her favorite part; at Chapin y Mex, they’re not a side dish, they’re foundational to the plate and deep in garlic flavors which turn into something even more satisfying with the added mild cheese.

My own chile rellenos were stuffed to the brim with shrimp. The peppers themselves weren’t particularly spicy, but were covered in a thin jalapeñoonion-tomato sauce that addadd ed heat. Where my friend’s plate was composed of simple momo ments, mine was more of a single symphonic blast, a tide of flavors that push ahead without stopping to figure out what’s going on. The beans and rice did function more as sides on my plate. The rice was buttery, soft and specked with bright veggies, providing a comfortable return to solid ground after getting caught up in the tide of the chile relleno.

The biggest tragedy of the meal was that neither I nor my companion had room for dessert. We were hoping to try the choco flan ($4.95) or the Guatemalan-style tres leches cake ($5.95), but we were completely stuffed—not good for dessert sales, but hugely good for my soul.

Fast fashion and strange pacing make Steve Coogan’s newest rather vexing

Whereas American films like The Big Short tackled ideas of ethics, money and unscrupulous business dealings, director Michael Winterbottom’s Greed, starring Steve Coogan’s take on fast fashion and the people behind it, feels heavy on the frills and light on message.

Coogan is Sir Richard McCreadie, a Richard Branson type operating in England—though he is perhaps more evil. Coogan’s billionaire mogul built his empire on shady banking deals, sweatshop labor and the idea that image is more important than reality, an ethos his ex-wife (Isla Fisher) and reality star daughter (Sophie Cookson) subscribe to as well. If it sounds Trumpian, it surely is, though it’s notable that Coogan’s McCreadie doesn’t seem as idiotic as our president, maybe just as money-grubbing (which is honestly so much worse).

In the lead-up to McCreadie’s 60th birthday, a lavish, multi-day party is planned in Greece.

But it’s not just celebratory, as we learn in flashbacks to a government hearing during which McCreadie feels he was humiliated. The party

is meant to reassert his position as a powerful man, and to send a message to his contemporaries—if only something, anything, would go right. Everything from Syrian refugees, unavailable celebrity guests, nosy biographers and lackluster lions seem to be conspiring against McCreadie, and as we watch his party shut down, we begin to learn firsthand why many of his employees and former partners have dubbed him “Greedy” McCreadie.

Greed works well when it leans into dry British humor, and Coogan certainly has a way about him that lends itself to a rich asshole character. All around him, however, is chaos, and not just in the plot, but in the jarring back and forth pacing that can’t seem to help the film decide

whether it’s a comedy or a drama. When done well, so-called dramedy can be divine, when done like this, no characters get proper enough development for an audience to build any sort of feelings about them.

Toward the end, some heartbreaking facts about the fashion industry flash across the screen in text, and though this is certainly valuable, they feel like an afterthought. The rest of Greed feels cobbled together despite a few big laughs and a shocking ending that is unexpected but solemnly hilarious.

+ AFFLECK; TALENTED CAST - CONFUSING, GENERIC PLOT; SO SLOW

This March you are invited to witness the story of a basketball coach with dark issues and a tragic backstory mentor a smartmouthed team of children who discover their collective inner strength and reach victory! No, this isn’t Mighty Ducks (too many F-bombs) and it isn’t Coach Carter (not enough sass)—it’s the Ben Affleck-led sports drama The Way Back, a slow, sad, cliché-stuffed tale of a broken man who reckons coaching high school sports can lead to personal redemption.

For all its flaws, Affleck’s Jack Cunningham is consistently honest in his portrayal of alcoholism. The most resonant scenes have to do with the loved ones addressing his drinking; he lashes out, makes excuses and dismisses every serious discussion with believability as his ex-wife (Blindspotting’s Janina Gavankar) brings extra weight to her scenes with Affleck. Elsewhere, however, the team suffers from a lack of development despite well-cast young actors. They’re not given much to work with other than talking a little

smack and receiving Jack’s tutelage. Worse, they’re all stereotypes, including the gifted leader, the ladies’ man and the misguided dude who just needs a second chance.

Director Gavin O’Connor, who previously helmed such rousing sports films as Miracle and the unusually powerful MMA tale Warrior, brings none of the energy from his past works to The Way Back. We do see flashes of greatness through his intimate work with Affleck, but O’Connor saves little else for the other players. An uncommon fourth act arrives, and that, too, drags on as if writer Brad Ingelsby had kneecapped the feature so he could smash generic sportsflick drama together with a feint jab at dark character study. Are we going to watch Affleck drink gin out of a coffee container, or is he going to give the troubled kid a ride home and life advice? Both! The whole film suffers.

The path to wellness for many is a long, hard road, and films with the courage to approach such issues deserve to be recognized—but at what cost? Sports dramas are certainly attractive and make us believe we’re feeling something, but in the case of The Way Back, that something is mostly cliché-fatigue. (Matthew Gutierrez)

make sense to seek comfort with another who truly knows your situation? The relationship is especially moving in its adjacency to the dance studio’s—and Tbilisi itself’s—machismo, an unexpected element again, but another example of Akin’s ability to find something beautiful within seemingly staid or even lifeless places.

While And Then We Danced recalls Whiplash in its brutality and emotionality, it recalls other foreign newcomer Portrait of a Lady on Fire in its portrayal of love in unexpected places; which came fist doesn’t matter, because it’s magical, even if it hurts us getting there.(ADV)

Cinema is crammed with dance movies that examine obsession or loss, challenge or personal development. And while there has certainly been sex in dance films, And Then We Danced practically begins with the line: “There is no sex in Georgian dance.” Yeah, right.

It’s interesting for a Swedish director like Levan Akin (who, to be fair, has Georgian parents) to tackle a movie about Georgian dance, but this one is something special, like a fragile flower growing amongst the concrete and rubble of a too-hard Georgian society.

Levan Gelbakhiani is Merab, a 20-something dance obsessive who has been rehearsing an important duo routine for nearly a year in the hopes of gaining a spot with the national dance squad when some other hotshot named Irakli (Bachi Valishvili) shows up to steal his thunder

with his fewer years of practice and somehow more effortless moves.

“Since I could walk,” Merab answers when asked how long he’s danced, and there’s a deep family connection to dance as well with his folks having been hip shakers before him. It’s almost like his birthright or something, at least in his eyes; his girlfriend is in the troupe as well, his party animal brother, also.

The whole replacement thing wouldn’t be the biggest deal, really, but Merab’s home life isn’t so great. The electricity is often shut off, his elders seem to have given up on pretty much everything and dance is the one place where he can truly feel free. His game is all mixed up, leaving him feeling a ferocious hatred of his rival— oh, but he might be gay, too, and have the major hots for Irakli, so that’s really just complicating everything even more.

Scenes with Gelbakhiani and Valishvili are revelatory. They’re hot, yes, but with a tenderness wrought from a deeper aesthetic of love and caring. The pressures of a dance career weigh down mightily on them both—does it not

- SLOW TO START, FAST TO RESOLVE

Elisabeth Moss (Her Smell) continues her streak of noteworthy performances in The Invisible Man, a film with so-so jump scares, a rather terrifying core premise, an important message and an otherwise chilling resolution likely to stay with its viewers long after—even if that resolution feels half-baked.

Moss is Cecilia, a woman we meet as she’s escaping an abusive relationship with some kind of Silicon Valley optics genius/billionaire. Controlling doesn’t begin to describe her ex’s behavior, and the aftermath finds Cecilia struggling to do things as simple as leaving the house of her bud James (Aldis Hodge), a cop and father with a heart of gold. But then the ex winds up dead, or so it seems, and Cecilia gets back to living her normal life—right up until she’s pretty sure he’s somehow been able to turn himself invisible and is stalking her at every turn.

The slow yet steady isolation begins as the ex starts making Cecilia look like a violent and crazy sociopath to the rest of the world. Unable to convince her friends and loved ones that her reportedly dead former partner is alive and invisible, she descends deeper into the abyss, frightened and detached and powerless. Moss has said in interviews that the movie’s like one long metaphor for gaslighting, and while the stakes are more intense than they must feel to everyday people suffering from proximity to a narcissist, the song remains the same—and it’s awful.

Moss is brilliant, steadfast in her convictions but teetering on the edge of what she believes is real or not. The situations in which she finds herself prove increasingly dire and bleak, and though The Invisible Man shows the fallout of her ordeal in excruciating detail, and though it often seems like she’ll be unable to emerge from the

In the annals of rock and roll mythology, The Band enjoys an exalted status. The quintet is credited with more or less inventing the Americana sound, and their synergy as a musical unit was legendary.

Among the five world class musicians were three gold-standard lead vocalists and one Hall of Fame songwriter—Robbie Robertson.

Once Were Brothers is the story of The Band told from the perspective of Robertson. It’s based on his autobiography, making Robertson effectively the narrator of the film. That’s good and bad. The film’s singular POV provides a sturdy narrative structure—and it’s a hell of a story—but also leaves the film feeling, at times, like commissioned portraiture.

Still, what a lovely portrait. The Band assembled itself in the late 1960s and famously served as Bob Dylan’s backing act when he jumped from folk to rock. The archival footage from this period is fantastic and includes home-movie-style film clips from the heart of the rock and roll revolution.

Director Daniel Roher (Finding Fukue) alternates old film clips with testimonials from admirers: Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Peter Gabriel, Jann Wenner, Van Morrison.

“If there were any American musicians comparable to the Beatles, it was them,” says Taj Mahal.

Casual fans should enjoy all the musical history on display, while serious students of The Band are provided some interesting insights. Clapton extols the group’s disciplined creative process: “They didn’t jam,” he says. “They were a songwriting outfit.”

Toward the end, the film suggests the real reasons The Band splintered as it did—alcoholism and addiction. Robertson and Garth Hudson, the

nightmare, we learn the importance in believing women or, rather, in trying to not make people in general feel insane for feeling their feelings.

In a post-Get Out world, where horror films plumb the depths of issues long lurking in the darkness (such as racism or gaslighting), movies like The Invisible Man feel urgent in a way the monster flicks and serial killer fare of yesteryear never did. Moss’s Cecilia gets her resolution, alright, and while it raises other questions about how we’re supposed to handle our emotions, it certainly feels satisfying. Just be warned that writer/director Leigh Whannell digs deep into some painfully relatable topics that could be triggering for some. (ADV)

It’s early, but Portrait of a Lady on Fire is one of the year’s best.

two relatively sober members, held the group together for years (tellingly, they’re the only two still alive), but the Band still detonated at the end of its run in a cloud of bitterness and copyright disputes. With the film, Robertson basically gets in the last word.

Roher flashes forward throughout, but sensibly ends it all with the story of The Last Waltz, the famous 1978 farewell concert immortalized by filmmaker Martin Scorsese. That’s the right choice. On that transcendent evening, The Band was the best rock and roll group on the planet.

That’s how we ought to remember them.

“It was a beautiful thing,” Robertson says. “It was so beautiful it went up in flames.”

Someplace near the windswept beaches of Brittany, late in the 18th century, an artist named Marianne (Noémie Merlant ) arrives by boat. She’s to paint the portrait of a young, engaged woman named Héloïse (Adèle Haenel); she’s not the first, and she might not be the last—others, she’s told, failed at the challenge set forth by Héloïse’s mother: to paint the girl without her knowledge. Hers is an unwanted marriage. But from the bizarre setup comes a fiery if painful tryst between the women. Unthinkable in its time, in the hands of writer/director Céline Sciamma (Water Lillies), Portrait becomes a methodical and believable look at sexual politics, family strife, loveless marriage, lust, connection and artwork.

Perhaps even better, it is free from any male fantasy dynamics and instead becomes a relatable and powerful piece of LGBTQIA2+ filmmaking.

Her chemistry with Merlant hangs thick over even the simplest meetings, but Haenel never loses the thread of pain so important to her character’s development, even up to the moments before the credits roll. And over everything, cinematographer Claire Mathon’s bright yet muted color and lighting schemes belie the deeper urges afoot, and with most scenes resembling paintings themselves—be it a simple meeting in an estate kitchen or a hauntingly gorgeous scene of singing—it would be impossible to pinpoint one moment that feels out of place. Even a seemingly insignificant chamber maid (Luàna Bajrami) hides more than she lets on, and discovering her secret feels more like uncovering a sisterhood than it does a morality play—these women look out for each other, even to their own detriment, even at a time when there’s no telling what repercussions might have come to bear.

In the end, Portrait is a triumph, even if it eschews sappiness for a more authentic look at love at the wrong time and place. It’s as beautiful as it gets, a cinephile’s dream, which, yes, can mean it feels slow. But nothing is out of place in Sciamma’s world and vision. This one will stick with you. (ADV)

year-old Turkish Angora sisters. These beautiful girls came to the SFAS together in Sept 2017 from a landlord, after they had been abandoned at the rental property by the previous tenant. They appeared quite bonded during assessment, ORI ONYX so they were adopted out in January 2018 as a bonded pair to a new loving home. Sadly, their new mom succumbed to cancer in February and the cats remained in the apartment with the management attending to them daily until Felines & Friends was contacted. These lovely cats are still adjusting to their new circumstances and are a little shy. However, when given individual attention they respond and purr. We are looking for a quiet adoptive or foster home for them together.
