I just read your write-up from yesterday’s COVID-19 Update with Michelle Lujan Grisham and Drs. David Scrase and Tracie Collins...Congratulations to you for asking about hospitals giving preference to their own patients to the exclusion of the wider eligible community. This of course flies in the face of the impression that the NM DOH has given that citizens are chosen impartially through their registration system.

You were very diplomatic in raising this issue, although we both know that here in Santa Fe, Christus St. Vincent has systematically been limiting vaccinations to their own patients.

Now both our governor and the health secretary are on record as saying that this is not right. I hope they will take corrective action immediately and align their intentions with practices on the ground. Both the state and national media have been drawing much needed attention to the equity issues involved in distributing COVID-19 vaccines and I’m encouraged to see that [the Reporter is] engaging decision makers on this critical concern.

Ms. Cantor sounds more like an apologist for the Forest Service than a reporter. There is no mention of the good reasons why people may be upset on social media other than “it is the wrong time of year to see burns.” And there is no mention of scientists who have a different view of how to “manage” forest fires other than setting forest fires. She certainly covered what the Los Alamos Lab is working on. Is it standard for your articles to not present any alternative views from the citizens of Santa Fe?

And you know, some of my favorite patients have kind of succumbed to the virus…there were others, who clearly had not yet come to their time. A vibrant woman with a major organ transplant, who was just an absolute light, who got exposed, got COVID and died within…a couple of weeks. So, yeah, it’s hard. But at the same time, it kind of brings home and refreshes my sense of urgency at the state level.

I know you’re not Nostradamus, but I wonder if you have a stance on whether this pandemic has changed New Mexico and the rest of the country in permanent ways?

With these variants [the South African and UK versions]…there’s a worst case scenario version, where we start over, except instead of having zero cases, we have, like, 300 we’re building on top of and, even worse, maybe the vaccine won’t be effective for one or more of those strains. We know that [bamlanivimab] and other monoclonal antibodies aren’t as effective for a couple of those strains. And so, I don’t have to be Nostradamus: I’m just worrying about what’s going to happen next month. But I do think at the same time that…it will be really interesting to see how [not having a flu season] affects society and how we think about wearing masks in the winter, for example. I think we’ll relax more than maybe it makes sense and then we’ll learn something from that and tighten up.

Collaboration between tribal educators and lawmakers hits back at inequalities identified in Yazzie/Martinez ruling with reform package

A

raft of bills targeting educational inequality soldiers forward in the Legislature, encouraging proponents who hope the state is ready to fulfill its responsibility to educate all New Mexican students.

In direct response to the mandates handed down by late state District Court Judge Sarah Singleton in the landmark 2018 Yazzie/Martinez case, the proposed legislation aims to address pitfalls hampering Native youth.

The proposals’ goals include wrestling control from the state Public Education Department and empowering tribal education departments to apply culturally and linguistically relevant teaching throughout schools while financing programs to hire more Native teachers. Furthermore, by developing broadband access, investing in tribal libraries and legitimizing Indigenous languages, the legislation aims to fill the opportunity gaps still haunting New Mexico schools.

This collective of bills saw early progress in the House Education Committee, with do-pass recommendations on House Bills 84, 85 and 86, pushing them into the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. A final piece of legislation, HB 87, awaits debate in the education committee.

Though advocates remain optimistic, similar legislation in 2019 and 2020 encountered funding challenges. “As I’ve been told in the past two years in a row, there’s just no money to handle these types of issues,” Rep. Derrick Lente, D-Sandia Pueblo and the four bills’ sponsor, tells SFR. Lente says advocates and his team worked with the Legislative Finance Committee to secure funding through a line item in the Public Education Department’s budget.

The LFC also issued revised findings regarding the landmark education lawsuit last month, and they reinforce the need for more precise legislation to topple barriers that, taken together, reflect the dark and painful history of Native education in New Mexico.

Decades of negotiation between tribal communities, Native educators and Indigenous leaders has culminated in a reimagining of public education structures.

A document developed with tribal leaders and education experts informing the goals of the legislation, called the “tribal remedy framework,” outlines how the state should build capacity for culturally relevant teaching and transform the state’s education governance to better support at-risk students.

With endorsements from New Mexico’s 23 tribes, the plan addresses longstanding inequalities that left at-risk students unprepared for college and careers. Though much of the framework’s focus is intended to support Native students, other vulnerable groups, such as English Language learners, students with disabilities and low-income students, stand to benefit from the wide-reaching proposals.

The effort to give tribal education departments greater say—by restoring language autonomy and more—is outlined by HB 85.

“We’ve had a dearth of educational infrastructure in our Native American communities since…we’ve been experiencing mainstream society. With Rep. Lente, we’ve been trying to uplift tribal libraries as this kind of educational hub in our tribal communities,” explains Jasmine Yepa, a policy analyst at the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty.

These structures lacked priority in the eyes of PED in decades past, which has contributed to the current achievement gap between Native students and their non-Native peers, says Regis Pecos, co-founder of the Leadership Institute at Santa Fe Indian School and former governor of Cochiti Pueblo.

Some of the funding from HB 85, if awarded, would help train and certify Native language teachers in tribal communities—a move Pecos dignifies as an effort to stop the erasure of Indigenous culture.

Part of the appropriations in HB 86 would allocate funding for a projproj ect to expand internet accessibility in Native communities.

Most of New Mexico’s 19 tribal libraries are housed in buildings that are not meant for libraries, says Janice Kowemy, director of Laguna Public Library, though often these spaces are indispensable to the communities they serve, providing technology, internet and educational resources which are sometimes scarce in tribal areas.

Despite the critical value of these community spaces, “We weren’t considered that essential yet, so we needed to figure out another way to get funding,” Kowemy tells SFR. In 2018, tribal leaders and education advocates gathered at the Pueblo Convocation on Education to hash out the costs to renovate education centers in each tribal community. Those recommended appropriations are outlined in HB 86.

Cultural and linguistic programs offered in these community education hubs would see funding increases from another piece of proposed legislation. House Bill 84 “is at the heart of the paradigm shift that we seek,” says Pecos. “This is really an important part in furthering the legitimacy of Native language programs, Native language teachers and treating them equally in terms of the resources necessary to fully implement Native language programs.”

Lente’s proposals would allow tribal education departments to use funds to teach Native languages and other methods.

Pecos warns: “If we don’t respond…we will contribute to perpetuating what we otherwise know is part of our demise. And I don’t believe we can afford that.”

“It works when we specifically target people and give them money to become teachers and increase their capacity,” says Faith Rosetta, Santa Fe Indian School’s high school principal. “If you are a Native American student who has had a pretty challenging experience in school, where you weren’t represented in school…why would you feel compelled to join that system?”

For those in rural areas, limited infrastructure has stymied access to the internet. Those who are closer to cities can more easily connect to existing fiber optic backbones, says Kimball Sekaquaptewa, chief technology director at the Santa Fe Indian School.

Instead of saying their vows with an audience of 60 friends and family followed by a reception, the brides chose an intimate ceremony closer to home with only two guests—each of their sisters as maids of honor—staged just before sunset atop the isolated ivory gypsum at White Sands National Park. Donning gas masks afterward to mark the occasion was Christal’s idea, and photographer Logan Monroe chose the spot for the portrait as pink kissed the sky above a mountain in the background.

“It was a beautiful day,” Monroe tells SFR. “For me, just driving there to White Sands, it felt like for the longest time I had been stuck in Albuquerque. It was so nice to finally have a break from that... and then when we got there and the sun set, it just really made me feel optimistic in a time when I felt really grim.”

Those extra efforts to find beauty and small-scale interpersonal connection factored into judging.

Gone were the crowded Plaza streets and art market days and, in their place, even more contemplation of the natural world, which is why the panel chose Luke Linhoff as second-place winner for birds crossing a colorful sky at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Third place goes to Gail MacQuesten for the nostalgic and candid look at a family cruising through Santa Fe in their lowrider.

The upcoming “Acequias, Mayordomos and Norteño Traditions” talk is part of Rancho de la Golondrinas’ ongoing Speaking of Traditions series conducted in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Art and broadcast via Facebook Live (facebook.com/sfgolondrinas/live). The living history museum’s Education and Volunteer Coordinator Laura Gonzales hopes locals will learn the people of Santa Fe have a lot of history of which they can and should feel proud, particularly when it comes to our acequias.

“Our speaker is Stanley Crawford, an author and farmer,” Gonzales says. “He’s usually selling at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, and he’s got that unique perspective to come and talk about the history and community around acequias.”

looking to absorb some interesting New Mexico factoids. Either way, Crawford’s lecture is just one way Golondrinas is offering up online content. The Las Golondrinas Channel on YouTube, for example, boasts everything from past lectures to good old-fashioned tortillamaking and hide-tanning.

“Even if you’re just growing your own vegetable garden or wanting to know about climate change in our environment, we’ll address that,” Gonzales tells SFR of the next talk. “This talk will be interesting, informative and fun. We’re all about sharing with the New Mexico community.”

While Golondrinas remains closed for now, donations keep it going and volunteers are still welcome, for whom virtual training for begins March 6.

“We always want people to know that we’re here and still trying to make programming,” Gonzales adds. “We’re looking forward to bringing people back soon.”

Time to get to the bottom of why we need Black History Month

Woodson initially proposed celebrating a Negro History Week each February way back in 1926. Some 50 years later, in 1976, this event officially became Black History Month, which today might be more precisely designated a month devoted to the history of the Black diaspora beginning with the Atlantic slave trade.

As far as what happens during Black History Month today, you’ve probably already seen an uptick of online events encouraging Black historical appreciation.

You’ll see it on television and in special (but limited-time-only) streaming service sections or in Facebook lists of the names and dates behind Black firsts— sometimes minor and sometimes quite important historical accomplishments: a Black individual who broke a glass ceiling, who strongly influenced some major historical event or who pioneered a field of study.

Black Wall Street was an extraordinary phenomenon until it was dismantled in 1921 by rampaging whites who burned the community to the ground—and if you still don’t know about the Tulsa massacre despite its insertion into recent pop culture properties like Lovecraft Country and Watchmen, Black History Month is the best time to honor whatever vague commitment you made to yourself to learn more.

Black History Month lists extoll singular accomplishments that often, like Black Wall Street, were handicapped, undermined or outright brought down by animosity, jealousy and racism. Inside the lists of names and dates, you might feel the profound arc of the systemic dismantlement of Black hopes, aspirations and potential since the slave trade. Perhaps you’ll begin to develop a personal relationship with the hundreds of millions gone, the few and scattered luminaries, as well as the stories that were never told, the books never written and the families sundered.

You’ll start to feel a profound solemnity when considering the trajectory Black history could have taken if not for colonization, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and a Western philosophy that denied Blacks their agency, intelligence or opportunity.

A

t the tail end of 2020, alarming statistics tied to pandemic-related restaurant closures started flying around in the news. Numbers vary slightly depending on the source, but according to the National Restaurant Association, one in six of America’s eateries have shuttered since the start of COVID-19.

Fact is, if you’ve cracked open any newspaper or clicked on any news site of late, you’ve probably found coverage about restaurants being about the hardest hit industry during the pandemic. And though there’s really no quantifying who has it worse—and with the understanding that not all restaurants are created equal— fine dining has seen better days. In a city like Santa Fe, where the Department of Workforce Solutions says 12% of our workforce is in hospitality and leisure, that’s no joke.

“It’s a higher-end experience,” says The Compound owner/executive chef Mark Kiffin, “and when people have less disposable income, that’s the one that takes the hit.”

There’s probably something to be said about who has access to fine dining, whom such businesses serve and the lopsided nature of literally everything—but before you get too self-satisfied about the whole thing, remember high-end eateries are not only some of the better moneymakers

Judas and the Black Messiah Review Shaka King’s second feature harmonizes conflicting moral questions, staying rapturous from beginning to end

Channeling noir in modern cinema often feels like a pale imitation. Shine some filtered light and boom—you’ve got it. Judas and the Black Messiah culls from the great noir tradition, though it feels nothing like an imitation. It’s presented with such precision, in fact, that it boasts a fresh yet classic atmosphere, giving off an air of both doom and hope in simultaneous moments; no small feat from director/writer Shaka King.

American films seem to struggle with portraying the Black Panther movement, save for peripheral nods here and there. King, however, shrewdly drops us into William O’Neal’s perspective, letting us see the world with fresh eyes. Held in custody after a failed carjacking, O’Neal (Sorry to Bother You’s LaKeith Stanfield) is recruited by an FBI agent (Jesse Plemons of Breaking Bad) to infiltrate the local Black Panthers chapter and gather intel on the up and coming so-called “black messiah” of Chicago, Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out). J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen, weirdly) obviously hates him. Unavoidably, however, Hampton’s charisma tears O’Neal between his more immediate shot at freedom from law enforcement and the freedom of promise offered by

Director Lee Isaac Chung’s semiautobiographical Minari harks to the intricacies of Richard Linklater’s comingof-age tale Boyhood with a bit of John Ford sentimentalism à la How Green Was My Valley.

Yet, in some ways, this one feels more guided

by America’s literary tradition than its cinema (there are evident echoes of Steinbeck and Morrison). What emerges is far from a repeat of the author’s past—Minari is an astonishing work of art capable of standing on its own.

In the 1980s, a Korean-American family led by Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica (Han Ye-ri) relocate to rural Arkansas to start a farm. Told from the perspective of 7-yearold David (based on Chung himself; Alan Kim), Minari often finds Monica exclaiming, “It’s not what you promised!” in response to Jacob’s increasingly obsessive bucolic dream.

Characters come and go in King’s film, picked off one by one by the powers that be.

Still, Judas finds sure footing between gripping and inspiring as King doesn’t shy away from the Black Panthers’ militarism. He doesn’t gloss over the novel, rare and true portrayal of women Panthers and the organization’s free community social programs, either. The government’s hostility toward the Panthers’ agency helps balance opposing concepts of violence and charity, and members of the movement display conflicted natures and motivations. This feels vulnerable in a way mainstream cinema rarely approaches when culling tales from the real-life Panthers.

These are layered and flawed people, not one-dimensional angry Black folks.

Kaluuya absorbs Hampton’s leadership and determination, while Stanfield achieves a remarkable level of sympathy within the frame-

Unlike other films in the realist movement, Minari avoids artificial nostalgia spurred by endless panoramic nature shots. Basing the bulk of the narrative on his own memories, Chung gives himself the breathing room to better emphasize the film’s production design, score, costuming and other oft-disregarded cinematic elements. The smaller things add up in Minari, exchanging flashy cinematography in favor of building a child’s world with honesty.

Yuh-jung dominates every time she’s on screen as the grandmother, while Ye-ri’s bold decisions in portraying the complexities of a torn mother unsure how to save her family are nothing short of phenomenal. Still, it’s the overall cast that works so well together in making Minari a real standout even a year after wowing crowds at Sundance. In a world of superheroes and CGI movies about feeling feelings, films like this rarely get in front of the number of eyes they deserve, which is a pity; this one’s a triumph. King wrenches each character’s deepest bits of humanity, letting the camera linger on facial expressions a beat or two longer than we’re accustomed to in our movies, providing the opportunity to examine their pains and joys, driving both home deeply but subtly.

Judas is thus the best kind of modern filmmaking—competent and confident, visually arresting with performances so exceptional, it’s enveloping from the first moments. Riveting, tense and often spellbinding, Judas stakes the claim as 2021’s first can’t-miss movie.

If you’ve ever feared a Reddit post coming to life and whispering its no-doubt super-edgy edgelord nonsense in your ear, those nightmares have now come true with the new “documentary,” A Glitch in the Matrix.

One of the more questionable entries at this year’s Sundance film fest, The Nightmare director Rodney Ascher’s newest lingers in a gray zone between comedy and true crime. It would almost be impressively self-assured in its boldness but, in actuality, it’s the film equivalent of the dude who crowds you at a bar to rant incessantly about his internet search history, or your stoner buddy asking you if you’ve ever contemplated the cosmos, man?!

Glitch asks the existential question of our reality: Are we living in a simulation, a la The Matrix? Setting aside how absurd it is to base a so-called documentary on a film that we now know is about coming to grips with being trans, the people interviewed in the film say their

anecdotal experiences are proof computer algorithms set our day-to-day lives. Ascher doesn’t clarify who these subjects are or why we should take them seriously—we don’t even get names; the good news is that we already don’t take them seriously.

The Matrix, you see, is a work of fiction. So are Phillip K. Dick’s works. Ditto the YouTube video essays from the depths of the internet where only the bearded truck ranters dare to tread. To these nefarious subjects, though, their “facts” are indeed facts—and grave warnings.

Ascher deserves some credit for not shying away from the darker sides of conspiracy beliefs, but Glitch runs away with its own rambling. Movie clips and frightening amateur animation do even less for credibility, and Ascher’s confidence feels more like a mask for a hollow and exploitative nonstarter topic.

Ascher doesn’t know what he’s going for.

His film is somehow comedic, dark and dull all at once, and he seemingly decides skimming the surface will do. Glitch is a 108-minute equivalent of a shrug. The automated voice that reads Wikipedia articles out loud would leave you with more. (Riley Gardner) VoD, NR, 108 min.

I bring these thoughts to your attention, Aries, because the coming weeks will be a favorable time to honor and celebrate the marvelously rich stories of your own life—and to feel gratitude for the full range of experience with which they have blessed you. PS: Now is also a favorable phase to rethink and reconfigure your answers to the Big Questions.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): It’s not a good time for you to be obsessed with vague abstractions, fear-based fantasies, and imaginary possibilities. But it is a favorable phase to rise up in behalf of intimate, practical changes. At least for now, I also want to advise you not to be angry and militant about big, complicated issues that you have little power to affect. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In her story “Homelanding,” Margaret Atwood writes, “Take me to your trees. Take me to your breakfasts, your sunsets, your bad dreams, your shoes. Take me to your fingers.” I’d love you to express requests like that. It’s a favorable time for you to delve deeper into the mysteries of people you care about. You will generate healing and blessings by cultivating reverent curiosity and smart empathy and crafty intimacy. Find out more about your best allies!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You’re about to reach the end of your phase of correction and adjustment.

To mark this momentous transition, and to honor your ever-increasing ability to negotiate with your demons, I offer you the following inspirational proclamation by poet Jeannette Napolitano: “I don’t want to look back in five years’ time and think, ‘We could have been magnificent, but I was afraid.’ In five years, I want to tell of how fear tried to cheat me out of the best thing in life, and I didn’t let it.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “The chief object of education is not to learn things but to unlearn things,” wrote author G. K. Chesterton. He was exaggerating for dramatic effect when he said that, as he often did. The more nuanced truth is that one of the central aims of education is to learn things, and another very worthy aim is to unlearn things. I believe you are currently in a phase when you should put an emphasis on unlearning things that are irrelevant and meaningless and obstructive. This will be excellent preparation for your next phase, which will be learning a lot of useful and vitalizing new things.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) ultimately became one of the 20th century’s most renowned composers. But his career had a rough start. Symphony No. 1, his first major work, was panned by critics, sending him into a four-year depression. Eventually he recovered. His next major composition, Piano Concerto No. 2, was well-received. I don’t anticipate that your rookie offerings or new work will get the kind of terrible reviews that Rachmaninoff’s did. But at least initially, there may be no great reviews, and possibly even indifference. Keep the faith, my dear. Don’t falter in carrying out your vision of the future. The rewards will come in due time.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Ancient Greek playwright Euripides was popular and influential—and remains so to this day, 2,400 years later. But there’s a curiously boring aspect in five of his plays, Andromache, Alcestis, Helen, Medea, and The Bacchae. They all have the same exact ending: six lines, spoken by a chorus, that basically say the gods are unpredictable. Was Euripides lazy?

Trying too hard to drive home the point? Or were the endings added later by an editor? Scholars disagree.

The main reason I’m bringing this to your attention is to encourage you to avoid similar behavior. I think it’s very important that the stories you’re living right now have different endings than all the stories of your past.
