As one of the “movers and shakers” in the Santa Fe arts community, New Mexico Performing Arts Society (NMPAS) wanted to share a bit about how our organization is adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our last concert with a live audience took place on March 1, 2020. Like many other performing arts organizations, we had to postpone our remaining season events.

Three were rescheduled to Santa Fe Music Week in late August and early September.

Our annual flute and performance skills workshops had to be put off until May 2021, because overnight stays and visitors from out of state would have put participants at risk. NMPAS also decided to live stream all future events until it is safe to resume in person concerts.

In looking back at the first part of the 2020-2021 season, NMPAS is grateful that we were able to continue to perform.

Feedback about live streamed performances has been very positive. We expect to

fter 15 hours of walking through the desert between Mexico and Mexicali, Damian Herrera and six other immigrants made it to US soil. Their guide, whom they had paid to lead them to safety through miles of September-hot border wilderness, had abandoned them just a quarter of the way into their trip.

Herrera and the others finally arrived at the meeting point where another guide, or coyote, picked them up in a car and continued the journey north.

He was one step closer to home— Santa Fe—his wife, Amy, his popular local catering business, Juicy Foods Santa Fe, and his gig teaching free community boxing and fitness classes.

His risky trip through the desert in September of 2020 was not his first.

Herrera made his first crossing in 2002 in the hopes of finding a better job in the US and sending money back to his family. He spent several years in Northern California, where he met Amy, before they moved to Santa Fe in 2008. Ten years later, Herrera returned to Mexico to apply for a visa. Amy says she thought her husband would be coming right back after a successful process. She was wrong.

When the US Consulate denied his application, Damian made a desperate attempt to return to his wife, whose father had fallen ill, and to the nighttime drive north with the other immigrants and the driver.

It wasn’t long into the journey by car before immigration agents pulled them over on Interstate 8, detained everyone inside and took them to the US Marshals Service at San Luis Regional Detention Center in Arizona.

Herrera would spend the next two months there, experiencing the wellknown trials of immigration detention— freezing temperatures, racism and bad food—before testifying against the driver of the vehicle. For his troubles, the 39-year-old was unceremoniously deported back to Mexico.

The deportation, after nearly two decades of living in the US, would seem to effectively end Herrera’s long-fought bid for citizenship. But he and immigration advocates hope the newly-minted Biden administration could be pressured to make widespread policy changes that just might change his circumstances.

Talking to SFR from Peto, Mexico, where he grew up in the Yucatán Peninsula, Herrera tells SFR he misses “everything” about his former life in the City Different.

While he is teaching boxing classes in the evenings in the small village and running a health food cafe, it is not the same as his life in New Mexico.

“I miss my friends and the community, I miss my wife, I miss the land itself,” Herrera says. “Santa Fe became my second home since the moment we moved there.”

In 2018, after a decade of marriage, the Herreras began to work on Damian’s application earnestly, gathering co-sponsors and putting together their tax returns to show his productiveness in US society.

Their lawyer at the time, Santiago Juárez from the Albuquerque-based law firm Amparo Alevante, recommended that Damian return voluntarily to Mexico to apply for a visa at the US Consulate.

But after a year-plus of tenuous hope and interviews, the consulate denied Damian’s application, citing a Trump-era policy—the “public charge” rule. The policy, which advocates say is aimed at keeping out anyone except the wealthiest immi-

grants, attempts to penalize people based on the assumption they will use social services like food stamps and Medicaid. The consulate told Damian that Amy had not made enough money in the first year of owning her business to keep him from potentially needing state or federal aid.

The Herreras filed appeal after appeal, spending thousands of dollars. But each time they were denied. The consulate’s denials also meant Damian would be prohibited for 10 years from entering the US because he had originally entered the country undocumented in 2002. (The deportation from Arizona holds a fiveyear bar, which just folds into the 10-year prohibition.)

Amy tells SFR the denials are a combination of “paperwork error” on the part of their original lawyers and the Trumpdriven shift in perspective on immigrants.

“Someone on that side of the border that’s a US citizen was told that, in my opinion, if somebody does not make enough

money in their family…do not let them get a visa,” Amy says. “Do not let them get a green card. Do not let them become a citizen. We don’t want people that don’t make enough money here.”

Juarez, the family’s former lawyer, declined to comment on the specifics of the case but writes to SFR via email that, “Hopefully, there can be some relief provided with the [Biden] administration.”

Amy is now at a loss as to what to do.

She runs a local colonics center and says she now makes great money after years of building up her business.

“I need to also take care of myself, too, and these last two years, I have not,” Amy tells SFR. “The stress has almost really, literally almost killed me. The stress of somebody that you love more than anything, thinking that they’re dead in the desert because you didn’t hear from them for a couple days and just the stress of getting through paying the lawyers that we paid.”

While Herrera’s story has received local coverage and outrage from the Santa Fe community, it strikes similar chords to those of thousands of other deportations in New Mexico that have split families apart, oftentimes for years on end, according to Allegra Love, immigration lawyer and founder of the local nonprofit Santa Fe Dreamers Project.

“This kind of thing is happening to tens, hundreds of thousands of people right now, this exact same thing, and it’s not a case of just flagrant injustice in one person’s case,” Love says. “This is representative of the massive injustices of our immigration system.”

Love represented Damian for a brief time as she tried, unsuccessfully, to stop his removal from the US. She says his return to Mexico in 2018 was “perfectly horrible” timing in that it coincided with Trump’s public charge policy.

It’s not clear what could now be done in Damian’s case. Love says the best hope is for a radical change in law, such as lifting the 10-year bar or reparations for people who had their visas denied because of the public charge rule.

But the Herreras’ reunion in the US is not a “foregone conclusion” either, according to Love—she tells SFR it’s impossible to know when a tweak here or there could change the course of an immigration case.

For now, Damian and Amy remain apart, and currently without lawyers as they work out, together, what their next move could be.

“This is a procedurally complicated case and so speculating on things that could possibly happen that could affect it is, I think, really dangerous,” Love says.

“Hope is a difficult thing when you’re working with immigration.”

Oil and Gas Industry Decries Federal Lease Pause But not everyone in the New Mexico is rankled by Joe Biden’s executive order

ith the stroke of a pen, President Joe Biden has enacted an indefinite halt to oil and gas leases on federal land across the country. The executive order reflects a broad set of climate change goals the administration has been working on since well before the election. Among the many provisions—including creating a National Climate Task Force and two environmental justice councils and building climate considerations into foreign policy and national security—the order calls for a review of current leasing and permitting practices on federal lands.

“We’re going to review and reset the oil and gas leasing program,” Biden said at the signing ceremony. And he clarified, “We’re not going to ban fracking.”

Industry message makers have decried the move, which affects thousands of acres of federal lands in New Mexico. Half of the state’s current petroleum production comes from federal lands, and taxes on lease sales and oil and gas sales buoy the economy.

Those industry voices say the ban will crater the economy, drive oil and gas operators out of the state and lead to the loss of more than 60,000 jobs by the end of 2022. The Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico (IPANM) calls it “the equivalent of dropping a bomb on operations.”

The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association has already started a letter-writing and phone campaign to sway the state’s politicians away from backing the act. The Western Energy Alliance, an oil and gas advocacy group, filed suit in US District Court in Wyoming within hours of the order’s signing.

“The Biden administration has just empowered countries most hostile to the United States,” declares Jim Winchester, IPANM’s executive director, in a statement.

However, outside the industry, very few agree with the end-time rhetoric.

Erik Schlenker Goodrich, executive director of the Western Environmental Law Center, calls the industry claims “frankly bogus.”

He points out that industry has stockpiled thousands of oil and gas leases and drilling permits already, which means production will continue on millions of acres across New Mexico.

Janie Chermak, graduate director and professor of economics at the University of New Mexico, says, “It’s not without concern, but the sky is not falling today, I don’t think.”

Meanwhile, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is taking a wait-and-see approach. States can ask the federal government for an exemption to the pause, but Lujan Grisham hasn’t said what she plans to do. “Our administration is reviewing these orders to evaluate the scope of the impact they will have on our state,” according to a statement her office released in response to Biden’s executive order.

On the legislative side, Dawn Iglesias, chief economist to the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee, says, “We’ll be working on this over the next few weeks” to try and estimate future impacts, if any.

The oil and gas industry is responsible for just over half of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to the state’s continuing climate crisis.

The Lujan Grisham administration has to thread a political needle as it commits the state to a dramatic shift toward green energy and lower greenhouse gas emissions while relying on oil and gas revenues to fund more than a third of the state budget. A dip in those revenues at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic last year threw state government into turmoil and prompted a special session of the Legislature.

“They have so many things on their plate right now,” Chermak says of the Legislature and the governor’s lukewarm response, “but this is probably a good time to say, ‘If we have a window of opportunity, how do we transition out of it?’”

Meanwhile, the reality for some large oil companies seems to be fairly sanguine. David Hager, executive chairman of Devon Energy, one of the biggest producers in the Permian Basin, says that his company has enough permits on hand to keep drilling for another four years. And it is not alone.

Aside from the technical knowhow and equipment, drilling on federal lands requires two things: a lease for the rights to the oil and gas under a particular patch of land, and a permit to sink a well there to bring the oil and gas up. As Schlenker Goodrich notes, industry has bought and stockpiled thousands of leases and permits across the West in the past couple of years. According to a fact sheet released by the US Department of Interior on the same day as the presidential order, out of 26 million acres leased to the oil and gas industry, 53% are unused and not yet producing oil or gas.

Furthermore, during the Trump administration, the Interior Department offered up more than 25 million acres of land in mineral rights auctions—something the Interior Department itself now calls a “fire sale”—and only 5.6 million acres sold. So the oil and gas industry wasn’t suffering from a lack of land to drill. By all appearances, it wasn’t interested in more.

Schlenker Goodrich says the industry suffers from an “ailing business model.”

While there may be a lot of oil and gas in the Permian Basin, drilling for it isn’t cheap. And he calls industry’s fight against a pause on federal leases a “deflection away from their own vulnerabilities and their own fragility of the revenue and economic logic that they’re operating under.”

As Chermak explains, production in the Permian—and elsewhere across the country—rocketed up in the 2000s because petroleum prices rose enough to cover the cost of the expensive fracking technology needed to reach deep oil and gas pockets. That led to a cycle of drill-and-debt that left many companies bankrupt.

In the meantime, oil and gas operations in New Mexico are unlikely to change for the foreseeable future. The pause on new leases does not affect the thousands of leases and permits that have already been issued, and it doesn’t affect leasing and drilling on millions of acres of private and state lands.

While the governor remains noncommittal over what action she might take, Schlenker Goodrich is optimistic that the pause in leases—as the Biden administration reviews the federal leasing process—“should give every New Mexican optimism that the federal government is going to play a very constructive role in New Mexico’s future.”

Last year, Santa Fe got legislative and Volkswagen settlement funds to install electric vehicle charging stations at public buildings; 17 new charging stations will provide power for 34 cars.

Retrofitting the city’s street lights with high efficiency LEDs is another project the city plans start this year. The city will also complete construction of a biogas cogeneration system at the wastewater treatment plant that will allow the facility to produce 94% of its own electricity.

At the top of the list for 2021 is an initiative to bring down the price of rooftop solar for low-to-moderate-income homeowners who have suffered financial hardships due to COVID-19.

othing went exactly as planned last year, but it still feels important to celebrate the small wins and look forward to brighter days ahead.

For Neal Denton, sustainability planner for the Environmental Services Division of Santa Fe’s Public Utilities Department, the wins include completed audits, certifications and long-term planning he hopes will eventually help the city meet the goals of its 25-year sustainability plan.

In 2021, Santa Fe residents will begin to see some of the fruits of that labor.

Just like the rest of us, the sustainability office had to forgo fun last year and cancel all events and educational programs.

The upshot was more time to focus on unglamorous, behind-the-scenes tasks like taking stock of the city’s progress toward its sustainability goals.

Despite two high-level vacancies for a sustainability officer and a build-

ing codes specialist hampered by a hiring freeze, Denton says his staff was able to achieve a lot last year.

“We’re lucky, we did not have to sideline anything really important because of the impacts of COVID-19. That can’t be said for every city,” he tells SFR, noting the city now plans to fill the two jobs.

To start, the office commissioned an energy and water efficiency audit of 38 city facilities that resulted in recommendations to install 17 new solar arrays on city buildings and upgrade 9,000 light and 800 water fixtures. Denton says the changes will save the city 20% on its utility bills.

The city also earned two national certifications last year that help define metrics of success and identify places to improve, says Denton.

Santa Fe achieved SolSmart Bronze certification from the US Department of Energy for streamlining its solar permitting and zoning rules. The city also earned a LEED for Cities Gold certification from the US Green Building Council in June after Denton’s staff spent three years collecting data on the city’s energy, waste, water and transportation systems and creating a community-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

together to negotiate the price for solar panels and installation, the new program will offer a better deal than what’s currently available to the individual consumer.

Officials are also exploring financing options that would allow the Public Utilities Department to back up loans for lower-income participants.

“This project is designed to remove the upfront cost from the solar loan for low-to-moderate-income homeowners… while making sure the monthly payment is lower than their electricity bills so that these homeowners are immediately saving money,” says Denton.

It’s a model that was successfully pioneered in Philadelphia. According to the Solarize Philly website, the initiative has signed up over 6,000 households and won contracts for solar panels on 677 homes since 2017.

Denton says he plans to approach the Santa Fe Public Schools board to offer the program to the district’s 2,000 employees, the majority of whom earn salaries at the lower ends.

“Teachers are dealing with challenges like they’ve never seen before,” says Denton. “This is a way that we envision communihelping the members of our communi ty who have really stepped up for our students.”

Teresa Seamster, a former school administrator and the chair of the Northern New Mexico group of the Rio Grande nonChapter of the Sierra Club, says the non purchasprofit has managed solar bulk purchas ing in other parts of the country and will work with the city on the Solarize Santa Fe program.

“Staff and level one teachers are generally pretty underserved—they don’t earn minorivery much money, are often from minori ty groups and they are well educated,” says Seamster, “so you’ve got people who inalready know about solar and are real in terested, they just don’t have the cash to pull it off.”

Neighborhood Lit Santa Fe’s Little Free Library stewards and readers have a common cause to expand readership

rika Benson is a passionate reader. As a Family Nurse Practitioner at La Familia Medical Center on the Southside, she comes into contact with all kinds of families daily. Most have little disposable income, and from all the years she’s spent getting to know her patients well, Benson knows many lack good books in their lives.

She felt she needed to take action, so Benson enrolled La Familia into the Read Out and Read program, a national literacy organization. As the site director for the program at the Southside location, she ensures when youth come in for a wellchild visit they’ll also leave with a book.

Families without books proved to be abundant. Despite receiving a book at the end of their visit, the next appointment wouldn’t come for months. Books, Benson found, weren’t in her patients’ homes, and for many, their La Familia visits proved the only times they received books. Benson started collecting used titles to give out for every appointment she had with a child. Siblings who came in with patients received books, too.

It still wasn’t enough, Benson tells SFR, so a Little Free Library stewardship was the natural step forward.

Little Free Libraries are part of a larger movement meant to tackle book deserts— described by nonprofit Unite for Literacy as a geographic area where books and other reading materials are hard to obtain.

Lack of books is a serious issue for developing children. In their 2019 study

the library, and was just expressing to me how much she loved it and how happy it made her,” Benson recalls. “There’s no better present I could’ve received.”

Santa Fe boasts three public libraries—the public library downtown on Washington Avenue, the La Farge branch on Llano Street and the newest (now 13 years old) on Jaguar Drive. While it might seem like going online to check out books for COVID-safe curbside service is simple, not every family has the opportunity.

Neuman and Moland’s 2019 study also found access to vehicles, the broader issue of income inequality and internet connectivity all play a role in the formation of book deserts. In higher-income areas, the study found, there was one book for every 13 children. In areas where people have lower incomes, it was more like one for every 300—and even then, they were often coloring books.

“My patient population is low-income, first generation families that are raising children in our community. So I stress the importance of reading with your kids,” Benson explains. “A lot of people can be scared of using a community service, especially if they are undocumented. Having it in front of a clinic helps serve neighborhoods that might be missing out.”

Book Deserts: The Consequences of Income Segregation on Children’s Access to Print, authors Susan B. Neuman and Naomi Moland found the mere presence of books in a home promotes curiosity among children, building a scholarly and pro-education attitude from an early age. The study also notes reading to children increases comprehension skills and can lead to better educational results— but working-class families don’t always have the luxury of filling a house with literature.

La Familia’s program offers gives them a place to start, and building the actual, physical book receptacle was a family activity for Benson. The Little Free Library nonprofit sells kits through its website—a quick scroll on the site store has them listed between $200 and $400—but Benson preferred a cuter and more memorable design.

“It all came from old tiles we had in the backyard. And from a table stand that was broken. It was all from old materials,” Benson explains. “But we live on a dirt road with zero traffic. We realized we had to find a new home for it.”

Her first idea was to place the Little Free Library outside her workplace, but soon realized foot-traffic was key. Not enough people walked by the Southside location, but La Familia’s northside clinic on Alto Street could potentially see thousands pass by given the nearby park, baseball diamonds and basketball and tennis courts. Benson also realized it could serve dual purposes, both for passersby and for La Familia’s patients.

It would also give the nearby neighborhood a Little Free Library to call their own.

It was an immediate success, says Benson. Within a short time frame, books began cycling in and out on their own, and Benson keeps a steady supply coming as regularly as she can. Sometimes, she says, there are discouraging moments—trash and religious literature, political flyers and a host of other materials wind up inside the library. Vandals have struck, too, requiring even more dedication to repairs and cleaning, all of which must take place during whatever little and precious free time Benson has.

Still, she says, one mysterious stranger repaired the little library once.

“I would love to say thank you to whoever did that. That’s a big undertaking.”

Benson says. “It’s funny, you can tell what a neighborhood thinks based on the books that are there. Maybe that’s why some people want them to stay.”

The hard work, she says, pays for itself.

this further emphasizes the onus placed on DIY ethos by the organization. Whom a library targets is up to individual stewards, and that includes which neighborhoods get libraries.

The nonprofit Unite for Literacy finds Santa Fe suffers from the same trends of being underserved when it comes to book access. Black, Hispanic and Indigenous communities face this struggle locally and nationwide. In Santa Fe, people who have low incomes also don’t have as much access to Little Free Libraries. The St. Michael’s Triangle and Southside neighborhoods (between Cerrillos and Agua Fria) have fewer than

So why are so few Little Free Libraries in the neighborhoods that most need them?

The Neuman/Moland study finds Little Free Libraries tend to go up in neighborhoods with residents who already enjoy easy access to books. In Santa Fe, of the 32 Little Free Libraries SFR located, only one stands in a tract the US Census describes as low-income.

The organization itself doesn’t provide much help. Potential stewards facing lower incomes are encouraged by the nonprofit to contact local organizations such as the Scouts, churches and Rotary clubs, and with no particular oversight, any data SFR could find was anecdotal.

“We measure our progress by looking at the number of Little Free Libraries and number of books shared annually,” Margret Aldrich, a spokeswoman for Little Free Library, tells SFR. “We also look at the placement of Little Free Libraries through our Impact Library Program, which provides libraries and CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

to be amazed anew by how what on the surface level is just an ordinary looking patterned object can let me share an often intimate moment with the writer, sometimes with people long dead. It’s a powerful tool to connect minds, and we need things like that.”

Those living the nomadic lifestyle, or who travel often, might find the little libraries offer the access they were looking for. Barnes sees the bookshelves at campgrounds and on random drives. They’ve come across impeccably crafted bookshelves and plainer ones—even a library made from of an old microwave.

“The books are communally owned rather than lent, they can be kept or ‘returned’ to a different public bookcase entirely. So it’s nice for both living light but also to supplement a collection,” Barnes explains. “It just depends on

books at no cost to underserved areas throughout the United States.”

That program is meant to directly serve struggling communities—including a specialty offshoot aimed specifically at Indigenous communities—but also requires a sponsor willing to perform caretaker duties for at least one year.

Thus far, none have been registered in Santa Fe and there are only four in the entire state.

A connoisseur of Little Free Libraries, Arlo James Barnes often peruses the cabinets around Santa Fe, searching for the overlooked treasures.

“They contribute to the world being weirder and more diverse and interesting in a good way, which I have to hope combats the way the world has become weirder in a bad way,” Barnes says.

“However, they’re not all made alike.”

What kind of things have they found?

“A little booklet with holes in the cardboard pages, meant to insert pennies for each year in the 20th century; the latter half had been filled,” they tell SFR. “A plastic ‘20% Off!’ sign. A VHS of a fictionalized biography of Stravinsky. A brick.”

Barnes’ finds in the Little Free Libraries range from the usual oddities to architecture guides, or books of poetry by Talking Heads leader David Byrne. Religious tracts commonly get left behind. Barnes even found a carefully molded paper mache figurine stored away in one.

One thing that’s stood out to them is the number of self-published works that find their way in—independently published memoirs, books of poetry or creative works. Oddness aside, Barnes feels Little Free Libraries give authors an audience who’d otherwise have no readers.

“Reading has always been a part of my life since I learned how to do it,” they say.

Barnes notes they aren’t intended to be a one-size-fix-all for the problems of the broader community. To them, the little libraries give readers a chance to check out what might be missing from bookstores or government-supported library systems.

“They’re not a replacement for funding and supporting institutional libraries and places of education and culture, but they’re an often-great supplement to them,” they express. “It covers gaps in curation that are infeasible for taxpayer-funded institutions to justify doing.”

Barnes cites Sturgeon’s law—the concept from author Theodore Sturgeon that 90% of everything is crap, but the 10% is worth the struggle to find it.

Their advice to the skeptical?

“If one doesn’t impress, try finding another; or if it’s in your neighborhood, try tending it from time to time. It’s like a community garden of sorts.”

Off the Beaten Path

Pueblo Alegre’s neighborhood library boasts a smattering of romance novels, along with some classics, reference, spirituality and the occasional religious tome.

Tee Iseminger has been looking to build a literary community just outside Santa Fe in the tiny town of Lamy for years, but community meeting spaces have often been scarce. The on-again-off-again Legal Tender restaurant has been in flux as far back as anyone can remember, but Iseminger has seen Little Free Libraries thrive in other towns she’s called home.

The Amtrak station became her de facto location. After all, if passengers were regularly happening through and waiting for trains, a Little Free Library would certainly provide something to do.

“I thought we could at least start with a small library since the nearest source of books was up at the Eldorado library, five to eight miles away,” Iseminger tells SFR. “Honestly, I also think that getting a peek at what your neighbors are read-

The Christian Girl’s Guide To Money

by Rebecca Park Totilo Alto Street’s Little Free Library The journey of a strong capitalist mind apparently begins at 8 years old! This curious little guide for young girls includes such fun activities as “give your money a name” (your choices are Oscar, Frog Skin, Bread or Spondulicks, to name a few). It encourages children to read the water meter, search for cable service deals in the newspaper, and for the child to call the phone service provider to get a better deal.

Such ways to start a business including charge your friends for Valentine’s Day cards, creating your own ranch dressing or becoming a DJ. There’s some good advice in here, especially saving during an emergency or cutting wasteful spending where you can. This was curiously nestled beside a Book of Mormon.

Demystifying Social Deviance

by Stuart L. Hills St. John’s College Little Library (at the Atalaya Trailhead) We get it Johnnies, you’re smart and read smart psychology books. A chapter titled “Homosexuals in a Changing Society” might give you the shudders as this was published in 1980, but it’s surprisingly progressive for its time. It examines both the male and female homosexual experience and a growing normalization—for the standards of 1980.

A thesis from the book seems to be why we labeled “deviant” for all things we didn’t understand back in the day, from organized crime to addiction to everything else. It’s actually a fascinating find if you’re curious how psychology was evolving back when Jimmy Carter was president.

Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook (1981 Edition) from Better Homes and Gardens & Sandra Granseth Alto Street’s Little Library We all had a relative with this in their kitchen—once-crisp white pages faded to something on the yellow spectrum.

Some of the photo examples are delightful, others a little horrifying. A quick look through the book taught me there’s a difference between dark and light fruitcake. Also that an Omelet Sandwich Puff is a thing.

This is a ninth edition published in 1981, and there’s a handy wine pairing guide and a detailed guide to identifying cheeses by look and smell.

There was an odd sticky substance in the opening page, but I can’t complain since the cookie bar recipe yielded some good results.

Flower Child

by Farida Sharan Pueblo Alegre Little Library I figured a book with vague imagery of the sky and galaxy would be dismissible, but Flower Child opens with a pretty touching introduction that made me appreciate it was written at all. Flower Child is one of those memoirs that wouldn’t have gotten the big press, but what’s not to love about a reflection of days-gone-by? It’s also 400+ pages, impressive for someone just writing for the heck of it. Well done, Flower Child.

What made you want to part with them now? This one has some markings, specifically noting the date of purchase in 1972. The great mystery here is that I’m not able to hear the secrets within. I didn’t even realize until I saw this tape that I had no ability to play it (yes, cassette enthusiasts, I hear your complaints).

For a lifelong reader, that connection feels nice. Books, Iseminger tells SFR, were vital to surviving her parents’ divorce when she was a child. They’ve always been there for her. Sharing that love, even not overtly, has been rewarding, even if nearby residents didn’t know what to make of the bright red library built by Iseminger and her husband Shane.

“At first people started using the Little Free Library to dump all kinds of unwanted things if they were even slightly book-adjacent,” she says.

“They’d leave open boxes of magazines on top or next to the library, which would then get filled with dust and rain, and just made it feel like a spot for junk.”

Despite those challenges, Iseminger says, participants eventually got the picture.

“It’s been up about two years now and I’m always surprised that every time I drive by, the number of books in there has changed!” she explains. “It gets a lot more usage than I expected it would, given that Lamy is so small. People really seem to like it.”

Not So Simple The impact a Little Free Library can make on a small hamlet like Lamy or a larger town like Santa Fe is yet to be determined. Little Free Libraries is one one of many organizations fighting to alleviate growing book deserts, but dedicated stewards like Benson and Iseminger aren’t always easy to find.

The nonprofit itself has less than a dozen employees—it’s the readers who do the work on their own time and their own dime.

But for people like Benson, watching over a library feels less like work and more like a civic duty. Either way, she says, seeing the impact amongst her patients matters most, even if she could use a few more Spanish language children’s books.

“Every once in a while it gets low,” Benson says. “But when you put a shoutout, people come out.

I’m so thankful for that. I don’t care whose hands the books go out to, as long as those hands have books.”

I’m a sucker for those rags to riches stories about regular people with big talents who get discovered and burn bright. Maybe it’s because I love to sing and my 1988 kid self always wanted to get discovered and become the next Tiffany (good thing that didn’t happen, though, ’cause she didn’t last long), or maybe it’s just the intoxication of a wellbuilt crescendo as you fall in love with a character and watch the world fall for them, too.

Either way, that song “Shallow” from A Star is Born has been running endlessly through my head lately, so I decided to rewatch the film. I figured I’d stop the movie before Bradley Cooper’s self-destruction, that I’d watch just enough to revel in the unfolding romance and Lady Gaga’s character coming of age. The story was predictable (they’ve made the movie a few times before) but beautifully executed in its excessive Hollywood way, and it left me with all kinds of sad feelings I didn’t expect, even though I stopped the movie before the total devastation.

I lay in bed afterwards trying to sort out the source of the heartache and realized it’s a larger, more prevalent grief—grief for the parts of being fully alive that this pandemic and parenting a toddler have taken away.

Performing in front of a crowd, for example, or wearing something fancy; seeing live music, being in community, making unexpected connections with new people—going out anywhere after 7 pm. These things I don’t let myself think about because I’m so busy compartmentalizing and getting through another seemingly endless 24 hours while trying to be grateful I still have work and food and a home.

So many folks are struggling so hard right now to meet the most basic needs in a country with a lousy social safety net and a raging pandemic; I don’t want to take anything for granted.

But I want to honor these other losses as real. The juicy and exciting parts of our lives matter. They give many of us the resilience we need to get through the grind, to feel connected to something larger than ourselves.

Sometimes we need a little power or a little magic to keep our souls lit.

When I was young and adventuring, I used to be such a fan of that Jack

Kerouac quote about the Roman candles: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars…”

I thought that was the essence of being alive and those were the friendships to pursue, but as I’ve aged, I’ve realized how much was missing from his proclamations. Kerouac never learned much about longevity—he drank himself to death by 47. Same with the tortured singer in A Star is Born. Roman candles burn out, and burn other people.

I’ve been thinking a lot about burnout lately.

Like so many of us, I’m pretty depleted right now. My stamina is achingly low for work I used to love.

These months of pandemic parenting, global disaster and being the family breadwinner have been utterly exhausting and turned up the volume on my longstanding mental health woes. I started a new med recently to take the edge off, which I write about casually, but it hasn’t felt like a very casual decision. It’s been pretty gutwrenching, along with some other hard calls and unsexy truths, like acknowledging just how limited my capacity really is. Most days, I am plum out of patience and spoons before the toddler’s even in bed. My thoughts are not dazzling explosions across the sky. I’m trying to figure out how to get more rest, eat more nourishing food, reduce my workload and find the space to stare out a window and take care of no one. Often, my spiritual task these days feels like it’s about compassion, acceptance and humility. Finding the glimmers in the day-to-day.

I long for a time when I can be generous again in what I offer the world, beyond the offering of parenting the next generation and paying a mortgage. I long for all of us to be connected to what makes us feel radiantly alive and profoundly creative. I long for wholeness rather than holding on and hanging in there.

I long for surprising beauty, like the plant I used to have with crooked arms and a thousand spikes, which would suddenly, in November, bloom pink stars at every joint. I want us all to bloom like that.

This is Not a Drill Michael Namingha’s odd, abstracted landscapes It really wasn’t all that long ago that the world’s eyes were trained on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota.

There was no shortage of Indigenous water protectors, well-meaning white folks, bandwagon cause-havers and media attention to descend upon the site of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Still, despite unspeakable violence from police and a massive public outcry to shut the pipeline extension down, it was built anyway. There have been spills. It’s pretty terrible, honestly. And that, friends, is just one example of the stranglehold our country’s oil and gas companies have on our nation and our planet. Somebody send in the artists.

In this case, that artist is Michael Namingha (Tewa/Hopi), whose upcoming Altered Landscapes show at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts merges photography, abstraction, geometry and good old-fashioned caring about the Earth into a strange yet beautiful takedown of the extractive industry’s impacts on sacred places around the Four Corners area.

pieces take on a three-dimensional quality, becoming almost dreamlike—sort of like something recognizable morphing into a bizarre, unfamiliar shape and tone.

With tens of thousands of wells across New Mexico alone, including near sites such as Aztec’s The Black Place or the endlessly fascinating Chaco Canyon area, the problem is only getting worse, but whereas rage toward commerce would be warranted, Namingha puts the onus on the viewer. Why do we let this happen?

Why isn’t there a larger public outcry during times that aren’t Instagramable?

With Indigenous communities seemingly hit hardest by the industry, Namingha’s work is both timely and timeless—gorgeous in its quiet simplicity, but boundless in what it can and should inspire within whatever’s left of our shared conscience. New Mexico Highlands University receives neary $1 million grant for Manitos Community Memory Project/Digital Resolana

ou’d think former state historian Estevan Rael-Gálvez would be a little more braggy about his credentials and work, but the scholar/ thinker/writer/punk-rock academic is more interested in serving communities throughout New Mexico and keeping history alive through old-timey info and contemporary data gathering. The Project Director for New Mexico Highland University’s Manitos Community Memory Project, which has been in process for nearly three years now, I caught up with Gálvez to learn about how a $970,000 grant from Pennsylvania’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will help the fledgling digital archive.

SFR: Tell us about the core ethos of the project. How long have you been at it, etc.?

Gálvez: One of the major things the Mellon Foundation is interested in…they sent out this call about working with rural communities and…they decided they wanted to work with smaller universities versus what they’d been used to working with—like Yale or Stanford. At that point, Highlands reached out to me. I came in and talked about the WPA project from the 1930s, particularly the [Farm Security Administration] photos. We had these photographers come into New Mexico and capture these amazing photographs

of individuals, buildings, of towns, but there was a politics to that process where unless you were white, your name was not included in those photos. I went in to talk about this project, and I said there’s an opportunity with people from Trampas and Questa and Taos, these small villages full of people’s ancestors, and we can use their [photos, relics and artifacts] to develop a memory project. This point was about two-and-a-half years ago, they invited us to submit a proposal, so we did.

What we’re calling Phase 1 was building our capacity: identifying what the problem is, grappling with the idea of what a community archive is, how we define that; developing relationships in small villages. We finished that part, and it’s on to Phase 2.

How does one even go about finding stuff for such an archive?

It’s not necessarily old-timey photos, old interviews, but it’s engaging youth in recording not just their grandparents, but each other. In Phase 2, we’ll pay individuals a stipend for their work in communities. We’re going to start what we’re calling Memory Labs. We’re trying to find ways to work within these smaller communities by placing equipment, like scanners, for example, so they can gather [items]. We’re also going to be working with Littleglobe, who are committed to intergenerational youth going into communities to gather oral histories—with organizations that already have infrastructure like that built-in.

What sorts of things have been collected and are on the website already?

People might see letters that were shared amongst people, photos, documents about a community. Eventually, in time, we’ll see some oral histories. Our intention is to gather people’s memories right now. And I’m not just interested in elders, that’s cer-

tainly part of it, but I’m interested in contemporary reflections no matter the age of the respondent.

Have you found or learned anything surprising?

I’ve been at this for quite a while, so very little surprises me, but what it does is excite me, like when I come across a thing or hear a story I hadn’t heard before. There are individuals who tell us more about who we are—like the mayordomos, the water caretakers in a village who embody tradition; or curanderos, healers, maybe that nurse in your family who started out in a place like Trampas but is now living in Albuqerque and helping people through COVID. One of the things we’re trying to take advantage of and leverage is with tech, and at this point, a lot of people hold tech in their hand that can be used to record someone or take a photo of someone, some thing. I now have this iPhone 12. In Phase 1, we were trying to bring in new types of tech to create 3D models of artifacts or buildings, and I actually think I have that tech now on my phone.

Do you think the rise of tech and our obsession with documenting everything has made doing such things feel mundane to most people?

What may seem mundane now may be of

interest to some future historian. My dad was a farmer/rancher in Costilla, and he always had a little notebook in his shirt pocket. Recently I showed up at his house and I said “Dad, do you have any of those notebooks?” A huge smile came over his face as if he’d been waiting for me to ask him. Some were from even before I was born. Him just noting: “20 lambs in the field today, irrigated six acres in alfalfa.” Little notes that tell us something.

Let’s talk about the term “Manitos,” as this term may not be familiar to everyone. Who are the Manitos?

We were drawn to this word because it’s how a lot of individuals refer to themselves. These are people from villages like Trampas or Abiquiu, whose ancestry is pretty complex, who can trace back to 1598, but to Indigenous ancestors, African ancestors, too. Part of the project is talking about that complexity.

It’s maybe meant as a diminutive, but a positive, and I think the idea is it was a diminutive greeting to them as “My little brother.” Like “hermano.” To this day when people see each other, refer to each other like “Mano Estevan, how have you been?” It’s using a word to pull them in and embrace them. It’s revealing the uniqueness of these cultures, including their neighbors.

Books and Biscuits

A

s the sourdough starter in my kitchen approaches its first birthday, my discard game is getting a little stronger. I’m a member of the brand new, unofficial pandemic bread-bakers club, and during these 12 months, the yeast in question has experienced few fits and starts—with one major scare in the early fall when I feared I had killed it for good. It remains, nonetheless, alive and happy.

These seem like adjectives we would all do well to embrace. So, when the story about the 65-year-old “monster” sourdough starter hit my social media again recently, it felt like a good time for a recap. Those who keep sourdough alive for long periods of time each have their own secrets, but regular “feedings” of water and flour are the key. Each time this occurs, some of the old sourdough must be set aside to keep the ⅓ proportions correct. And what to do with this substance is an art unto itself. I feed mine once a week and let it rise for an hour or so before I return it

to the fridge. Before I bake, I let it warm to room temperature, feed it and let it double.

It’s a good thing that this year I also embarked on reading Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1985 Western novel, replete with Texas Rangers, cattle drives, love stories and (let it not go without saying) ugly depictions of Native people. Those who know the book (or who caught the late-eighties TV miniseries) know it’s centered around two old cowpokes who have been friends forever and whose distinct skills drive the narrative.

“dough pot,” before his partner Woodrow Call decided to move the outfit north.

McMurtry sprinkles repeated reference to the biscuits—and their absence—within the course of the 1,000-page paperback, as if the dough itself is a character.

This inspired a spate of biscuit making the likes of which my kitchen had heretofore never seen. I’ll admit, I never even attempted to make homemade biscuits before now (something about a man in my family history who threw a hard one through a screen door and lives in infamy), but I even went down the internet rabbit hole and learned there’s a restaurant in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards called Lonesome Dove Bistro, helmed by chef Tim Love. There’s nary a biscuit to be found on the menu, however—Tim’s place features rabbit-rattlesnake sausage and other cattle-drive inspired dishes alongside fine dining fare. I’m betting Love’s cookbook does not contemplate Gus’ biscuits either, though I could not find a copy of it locally and am now awaiting an inter-library loan.

This got me thinking about Rick’s Cafe: Bringing the Film Legend to Life in Casablanca Casablanca, which includes reci recipes to recreate what Humphrey Bogart and cohorts ate and drank in the 1942 movie. In 2004, author Kathy Kriger opened a restaurant in Morocco to serve the food, and the book chron chronicles its story in a way that’s part memoir, part cook cookbook. with a side of an expat navigating bureaucracy and pitfalls.

Apparently no one has done this for Lonesome Dove’s coveted breakfasts, the fried grasshoppers with which Po Campos surprises the entire Hat Creek outfit, or his plover egg pie, for example. Or, at least if they have, the internet didn’t help me get connected.

So, after some adventure, I’ve altered this recipe for high altitude and for our two-person household. Come summer, my plan is try it on a camping trip with a dutch oven over the coals.

• Start with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a pinch of flour.

• Mix a half cup each of cold butter and flour using a fork.

• When the substance is uniform and crumbly, work in a half cup of sourdough starter.

• Press dough on parchment paper into a half-inch-thick slab. Use a jar to cut out discs.

• Piece together the scraps and make one more.

• Yields five or six depending on the size.

• Bake in a 350 degree oven on a clean piece of parchment over a cookie sheet for 16 minutes or until the tops are golden. Check the undersides and don’t let them burn.

Please do yourself a favor and serve them hot and slathered with apricot jam from last summer’s South Capital crop.

Brisk, fresh, frightening and touching: ‘Two of Us’ hits hard and leaves an impact

Two of Us is a surface level romance, although its true nature is, oddly, horror. It isn’t the film’s imagery or plot that make it so, but a deeper and harsher reality that’s almost hard to fathom: Homophobia is alive and well.

Nina (Barbara Sukowa) lives across the hall from Madeline (Martine Chevallier). To everyone in their lives, the women appear to be casual friends, but in secret they’re longtime lovers.

Even as society errs more toward approving of their relationship over time, the pair’s hush-hush goings-on remain a secret until Madeline has a stroke, putting Nina in the heart-wrenching position of battling her partner’s nurse and family, all of whom see the once friendly neighbor as increasingly strange and dominant. Those familiar with the canon of queer film might expect such a story to zero in on the injustices, and while it was probably tempting to go that route, director

+ HATHAWAY SELLS IT ONCE OR TWICE; HEDGEHOG

- LONG AND CONVOLUTED

You’re going to start seeing movies and television that were “bravely” filmed during the swirling, imposing pandemic. The kind that make the virus part of the plot. But as the onslaught of oh-so-topical projects starts to hit our screens, one question will remain for the those in search of quality entertainment: Why, when the excellent Michael Sheen/David Tennant production Staged exists on Hulu, would we ever put ourselves through the tired and unremarkable Locked Down with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor now streaming on HBO Max? The short answer is that we shouldn’t.

The longer answer has something to do with Hathaway’s Linda and Ejiofor’s Paxton, a well-to-do American/English couple living in London who split up just as the UK COVID-19 lockdowns come into effect. We observe the aftermath. The well-to-do bit has everything to do with Linda’s CEO position with some international company called Miracore. She’s racked with doubt. Paxton, meanwhile, once went to prison, loves his motorcycle so damn much and apparently has toned down his former wild ‘n’ crazy ways to live in a posh multi-story house with a friendly hedgehog out back. Linda resents

SMART, AND TIGHT; SUKOWA’S EMOTIONAL WEIGHT - WOULDN’T HURT TO GIVE ANOTHER FEW SCENES TO THE SUBPLOTS

Filippo Meneghetti’s first feature makes internalized homophobia a very real antagonist. Two millennia of oppression makes all kinds of love risky in the mind, even when the world ostensibly shouts its support; Meneghetti’s minimalist take keeps us behind the walls of the women’s apartments, making any exodus feel more akin to agoraphobia. He tells the tale economically, with no minute or scene dedicated to pointless fluff, which makes for a brisk run time, Two of Us becomes a wonderfully quick and cohesive introduction to queer cinema from a filmmaking newcomer.

him for giving up his attitude even if he did it for her; Paxton likes poetry and reads it aloud in the streets to his neighbors. Gross.

The chemistry between the two is fleeting, though particularly smoldering during arguments. We understand things were said that cannot be unsaid, but somehow we got lost when, in the third act of the film, Linda and Paxton decide they’re maybe going to pull off a heist. See, Paxton’s courier service boss (Ben Kingsley) sends him to illegally transport a diamond from Harrod’s department store—the very diamond Linda’s company has…something to do with…somehow. Unclear. But they might steal it, and then it’s splitsville, baby. No looking back.

Hathaway and Ejiofor do their best with Hathaway in particular doling out a decent monologue or two. Ejiofor’s effortless charm always works. Still, as rom-coms go, it’s not that funny or romantic. As heist flicks go, it’s kind of too little, too late. It’s also hard to reconcile blinkand-miss-it performances from Kingsley, Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling and Ben Stiller as anything other than a list of actors who said “Sure, I’ve got 10 minutes to Zoom in a performance,” to director Doug Liman (he did Swingers, you know).

So, yeah, maybe just watch Staged? Or at least wait for something that isn’t quite so drawn out and mostly boring with so little payoff.

Chevallier, meanwhile, has the monumental task of communicating without words and physicality. Denied easy communication, she gives every post-stroke scene a layer of tension atop Nina’s own turmoil. Two of Us, then, is properly intimate—a work that knows its boundaries and thrives in the ultimate simplicity of a story told well. The burn is slow, but the merging of confident filmmaking and a familiar but looming terror asks us to hold out a little longer as each scene ticks on toward resolution.

+ ENTERTAININGLY HEARTWARMING - TAKES A GOOD WHILE TO FIND ITS FOOTING

You remember David Arquette, right? The actor from the Hollywood family that also boasts Rosanna, Patricia and Alexis Arquette?

He was in Scream? Eight Legged Freaks? He married Courteney Cox? Yeah—that guy.

Anyway, turns out Arquette once had this super-promising acting career until the year 2000, when he joined the WCW pro wrestling league as a promotional stunt for the not-very-good movie Ready to Rumble (also with Scott Caan...ugh) and became its Heavyweight Champion of the World. This set off a firestorm of hate among the wrestling faithful, who’ve spent the last 20 years hating Arquette’s guts—and it almost certainly derailed his acting.

What’s a guy to do? Well, according to the documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette, the answer is to start wrestling for real, start training in earnest, hopefully to win the respect of…whoever…while simultaneously clearing out the cobwebs of mental illness and undoing two decades’ worth of ire from the wrestling community. And it’s a trip.

like it was worth the $19.99 rental on Amazon when it dropped a few months back, but now that it’s found a home at Hulu, it’s endlessly watchable in a trainwreck kind of way.

Arquette produces his own redemption story, one in which he gets fit, travels to Mexico to train with luchadores, enrolls in a real-life wrestling school and ultimately finds himself while being accepted within the wrestling world. It honestly feels like a long con bit at first, but as scenes wherein backyard wrestlers seriously mess him up or even an ER visit that comes after a bout results in a nicked throat artery show, there’s something to learn from the star of See Spot Run—homeboy is dedicated and, as the people who sincerely love wrestling are quick to remind you, even if it’s akin to a play, it’s still a sport (Arquette’s athletics prove that, too).

We also get interviews with living Arquette siblings (RIP Alexis), Cox herself and Arquette’s present-day wife, the journalist Christina McLarty. McLarty’s insistence that hubs is for real lends credence to the journey, and it’s heartwarming to see her support in action. Both give the audience even more of a reason to root for the guy. You’ll almost surely come to respect Arquette by the end, and you’ll appreciate how much he really, truly means it. (ADV) Hulu, R, 91 min.
