NO NEW REGULATIONS Your piece on non-bank lending painted a relentlessly negative picture of an essential industry that is starkly at odds with reality.

Most people believe New Mexico has got it about right in cracking down on unscrupulous lenders. Payday loans were eliminated in 2017. What is left are installment loans, considered, including by consumer groups, to be a safer and more affordable form of credit.

The new regulations discussed in your article will eliminate these beneficial loans.

Experience has shown that any optimism that credit unions will pick up the slack is woefully misplaced. In fact, borrowers will have nowhere to turn.

The alternative to new laws is to allow the potential of the 2017 and 2019 laws to be realized. These mandate the collection of lending data that can be used to identify the need for new policy and, subsequently, to shape it. The data gives policymakers a powerful tool to avoid unintended consequences and make evidence-based public policy.

Lincoln said, “Reconstruction is more difficult than construction or destruction.” Isn’t Biden’s “Build Back Better” just another way of saying “reconstruction?” Unfortunately, we did not get the first reconstruction right, but we have another chance and we had better do it right this time or our Republic will lose its democracy.

White supremacy is the sickness that plagues us, worse even than a pandemic virus, because it goes on and on while the virus will fade in the next year or so...Social media and television have unmasked the horrors done to Black and Brown people in the 21st Century. And the Trump efforts to overturn the election of Biden and Harris has revealed the direct targeting of the black vote...Reconstruction is hard, but that doesn’t mean we don’t do it. We need to have universal health care, good education, housing, and good paying jobs for everyone, a habitable planet, accessible and easy voting, and reform of our justice system including policing, prisons and jails, and the Supreme Court. The Wellesley Centers for Women have a motto: A world that is good for women is good for everyone. As a white feminist and long-time activist, I suggest that “A world that is good for Black and Brown people is good for everyone.” Let’s get it right this time.

Vaccines By the Numbers NM has been one of the fastest states to distribute its COVID-19 vaccines, but officials say the supply just isn’t meeting the demand

f New Mexico has 700,000 to 800,000 people currently eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, and receives enough doses to vaccinate 25,000 to 30,000 people each week, when will you get your vaccine? A. Winter B. Spring C. Summer D. Never If you chose D., buck up. That’s wrong.

A and B are likely correct for those currently in the first two subgroups of the state’s Phase1B group, which includes people 75 and over, along with people 16 and over who have underlying conditions.

Confusion over eligibility since the state launched Phase 1B earlier this month has resulted in some people “jumping the line.” Under the state’s vaccination plan, providers are supposed to dispense shots sequentially, starting with people 75 and older and those with underlying conditions. Those two groups alone, along with the frontline health care workers included in Phase 1A, constitute 700,000 to 800,000 people, according to Health Secretary-designate Dr. Tracie Collins, who discussed the state’s vaccination efforts in a news conference Jan. 25.

To break it down further: Health care workers represent approximately 138,000 people, individuals 75 and older more than 150,000 and people with underlying conditions around 466,000 people. The state then announced on Jan. 26 that all teachers and staff who are 75 years or older will be able to receive a COVID-19 vaccine prior to Feb. 8, when all schools are allowed to reopen in hybrid mode—although it was unclear at press time how many people are in that group.

New Mexico has administered close to 217,000 doses and close to 93% of the supply it has received, the third highest distribution rate in the country, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Collins was not able to provide a demographic breakdown for the doses administered so far, saying: “We are working to make sure our data

is accurate and we can share more moving forward.” SFR has a pending public records request for this information.

Approximately 522,737 people have registered to receive the vaccine, according to the state’s vaccine dashboard.

Hospital officials, also on Jan. 25, said supply is the only barrier to vaccinating more people. For instance, Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Gonzales said the hospital is receiving 1,000 doses per week and is just finishing up second doses for the qualifying frontline health care workers from Phase 1A. Then, it will start vaccinating the 4,000 patients in the Christus system who qualify in the first two subcategories of Phase 1B. The confusion has mostly stemmed from the other two groups included in the latter part of Phase1B: some frontline essential workers, such as teachers and grocery store workers; and vulnerable populations, such as those in congregate settings. Following reports of vaccination events for people not yet eligible—such as a planned gathering last week for teachers in Rio Rancho—the health department said it was doubling down on its communicate efforts about the vaccination plan.

The department also canceled the Rio Rancho event, provoking criticism from educators and union representatives.

“We had trouble with internal communication, which led us to cancel events,” Collins said. “So I really apologize for that.

It should not have happened. Moving forward, we have worked diligently to make sure communication lines are open up and down the chain so this doesn’t happen again.” That includes, she said, communicating with school districts, Education Secretary Ryan Stewart and providers themselves. To the latter group, she said: “We are grateful for you distributing vaccine. It is very important you know what our guidance is and you follow our guidance. We must go in sequence and we must ensure vaccine goes to those at highest risk of serious disease and death.”

Collins said a fix is on the way that will prevent people from sharing vaccnie codes.

While supplies coming into the state remain inadequate to vaccinate all those eligible, the state estimates working through the first two groups of Phase 1B into the spring. But Collins said the state is “advocating” for more doses and “we’re hoping and keeping our eyes open for options for more vaccine to be available in the coming months.”

Cannabis De-conviction

A

state senator says he’s got a “provocative,” “novel” idea for wiping out past cannabis possession convictions as part of a broader push for adult-use, recreational legalization the Legislature is expected to take up during the session that began last week.

It’s called a “legislative pardon,” and Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuquerque, believes the New Mexico Supreme Court cleared the way for it in a narrow corner of a decade-old firearms case involving federal agents and the Deming family of James Reese.

“When I read [the court’s opinion], I thought: ‘Holy shit, that exists?’” IveySoto tells SFR. “What I want to do is a legislative pardon as to the specific convictions of [cannabis] possession.”

The state constitution is clear that only the governor has the power of the pardon.

And SFR’s examination of the Reese case finds that Ivey-Soto’s reading may be overly ambitious.

The court recognized that a “deferred” sentence—in which someone completes a set of court-mandated tasks to get rid of a conviction—is effectively a legislatively created pardon carried out by a judge. But it did not appear to recognize a broader power for the legislative branch.

Still, the influential lawmaker who chairs the Senate Rules Committee, is certain his way can work and that it’s better than expungement, the mechanism for doing away with convictions offered in the 2019 and 2020 proposed cannabis legalization bills. Expungement is essentially shielding past convictions from public view, and New Mexico enacted a law allowing people to petition courts for it in most cases in 2019.

“I want to be very clear: That’s not what I’m talking about in terms of what I want to see for prior convictions,” Ivey-Soto says. “I want these people to be de-convicted. Let the court file still be public, but have the court file now say that this conviction has been vacated.”

It’s not clear whether Ivey-Soto’s idea will make it into proposed legislation. That’s because, as of presstime, the public has not yet seen a bill. Advocates, legislative supporters and likely sponsors tell SFR that legalization proposals will look a lot like they did in recent years: two ounces of flower and 16 grams of extract legalized and with regulatory frameworks for the proposed new industry, protections for the state’s medical cannabis program and tax structures all spelled out.

Without a path to scrapping old convictions, though, any bill will be stuck in the mud.

Emily Kaltenbach, state director for the Drug Policy Alliance, has been working with legislators on this year’s bill. She sums up the must-have component in an interview with SFR last week, pointing out that people with cannabis convictions are often barred from receiving student loans, housing and certain jobs.

“For nearly 50 years, we have been operating under this failed war on drugs that’s devastated the lives of thousands of folks in New Mexico. Much of that is the result of cannabis,” Kaltenbach says. “We need to automatically get rid of those

criminal records so that a past does not haunt people into the future.”

Rep. Javier Martinez, D-Albuquerque, agrees. He says he’ll sponsor a House bill for legalization, and any attempt to remove or weaken sections that wipe out past possession convictions would amount to a “deal-breaker.”

Martinez says he hasn’t spoken to IveySoto about the “legislative pardon” and adds that it’s not included in the legislation he’s drafting and hopes to introduce this week. He calls the idea “intriguing.”

New Mexico would join 14 other states and Washington, DC, in full legalization.

Many of those have included some version of relief for past convictions in their legalization schemes; California, Illinois, New Jersey and New York have the most sweeping, according to the nonprofit Collateral Consequences Resource Center.

None has used the legislative pardon route and neither, for that matter, has the New Mexico Legislature sought to exercise that kind of muscle in any context before.

However lawmakers decide to propose clearing past convictions, there are other potential hurdles lurking. For example, the Administrative Office of the Courts noted in a fiscal impact report attached

to the 2020 legalization bill that identifying each person eligible for relief under the expungement proposal would be labor-intensive and could cost more than $1 million.

The office could not tell SFR how many would be eligible this year, either, but Artie Pepin, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, says the effort would create “significant workload increase.”

Another provision expected to make a return this year: Anyone still serving time in prison, jail or probation for offenses that would no longer be crimes if a legalization bill passes gets to go home.

Eric Harrison, spokesman for the state Corrections Department, says 53 people are serving time in New Mexico prisons with cannabis possession convictions—but none of them is locked up on that charge alone. It is not clear how many of those people would be eligible for resentencing.

Kaltenbach of the Drug Policy Alliance says her organization has collected data showing about 3,000 people are arrested in New Mexico each year on cannabis-related offenses, with most of those being possession charges.

“The people who have been criminalized for cannabis for generations have mostly been Black, Brown, Native and Indigenous in our state,” Kaltenbach says, adding that this year’s bill should create an avenue for people’s records to be automatically cleared. The Expungement Act, which became law in 2019, already offers the opportunity to petition to have crimes that are still crimes wiped.

Ivey-Soto says the best solution is the legislative pardon, which would maintain a transparent system that doesn’t keep convictions secret, but acknowledges that the state has done away with them.

If his idea makes it into state law, a challenge based on the senator’s reading of the Reese firearms case would surely be forthcoming. The Supreme Court’s ruling was limited to deferred sentences, which James Reese received, and served only to restore his right to run for public office.

“The New Mexico Legislature established the deferred sentence as a means of judicial clemency,” thenChief Justice Richard Bosson wrote in the unanimous 2014 opinion. “Stated another way, deferring a sentence is an act of judicial clemency while a gubernatorial pardon is an act of executive clemency; and they are the same in legal effect.”

Ivey-Soto says he recognizes the novelty of his idea and hopes to cook it into state law so that it can’t be easily undone.

“At the end of the day it’s the judicial branch of government that gets to decide if it’s gonna recognize” a legislative pardon as Ivey-Soto sees it, he says. “We would never know if we didn’t try it.”

Bring on the Burn

lumes of smoke rose from Pacheco Canyon earlier this month as the Santa Fe National Forest and partner organizations conducted prescribed pile burns, lighting up stacks of brush and small trees felled in a 2018 thinning project.

It’s all part of a long-term fire treatment plan for the area. This fall the Medio Fire proved the effectiveness when fire lines from a previous prescribed burn held the wildfire at bay and stopped it from racing up the mountain toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin.

The biggest local lesson of the 2020 fire season showed the necessity of prescribed fire in preventing wildfires from becoming high intensity infernos that cause widespread destruction. Scientists and lawmakers in New Mexico are taking initiative.

New legislation being proposed across the West in the wake of 2020’s terrifying fire season includes a bipartisan bill currently up for debate by the New Mexico Legislature that would make the use of prescribed fire more accessible to private landowners.

Meanwhile, scientists at Los Alamos National Labs are studying how the future climate will impact ideal prescribed burn conditions. And they’re developing tools that could help fire technicians on

the ground plan for even safer and more effective prescribed burns.

Still, none of this negates the alarm Santa Fe residents expressed on social media at seeing smoke on the horizon in the dead of winter when the pile burns began in Pacheco Canyon. After all, this is not when the forest usually burns. Even most prescribed fires are scheduled for early fall or spring.

Pile burns are an exception to the rule, says Rian Ream, prescribed fire and fuels technician for the US Forest Service’s Española and Pecos ranger districts.

Unlike “broadcast burns,” in which managers clear excess brush from the forest floor by lighting a fire line and carefully herding it along the ground in the direction they want it to go, pile burns are used for areas that have first been thinned by hand because they are too densely overgrown to safely conduct a broadcast burn.

Ream says Santa Fe residents should expect to see smoke rising from Pacheco Canyon on and off for the next few weeks as the Pueblo of Tesuque and others in the area also conduct their own pile burn treatments.

Alex Jonko, a scientist at LANL engaged in both climate and fire research, says changes in the climate might lead forest managers to conduct many more burns in the winter in coming years—including the types of broadcast burns that are usually conducted in the spring and fall.

Jonko uses modeling to understand long-term trends in climate data and the kinds of changes that are likely to occur in the future. According to her most recent research, changes in temperature, humidity and wind speed will make the fire season longer and push the dates that offer the safest and most effective conditions for prescribed burns later into the fall and earlier in the spring.

Ream says increasing summer temperatures have not yet impacted when and how the Forest Service conducts prescribed burns locally, but notes that the

“The Medio Fire was the latest that I’ve fought a big fire in the Santa Fe in my career,” he says.

Rod Linn, a senior scientist at LANL, is working on a tool that could help forest managers better prepare for changing conditions.

Linn says changes in the climate, a century of fire exclusion that has led to dense, overgrown forests and the expanding wildland-urban interface all contribute to increasingly extreme wildfires and complicate prescribed burn efforts.

Linn is part of a team that’s spent more than 20 years developing a super computing tool to analyze and simulate wildfire dynamics under countless different conditions. The program, called FIRETEC, is used by the Forest Service, the Department of Defense and other agencies.

Now, Linn is developing a second software tool, QUIC-Fire, that simulates prescribed burn dynamics in real time on a laptop computer and is designed to help the forest managers plan for safer and more effective prescribed burns.

“This is a way of giving them a set of tools they can use to explore and plan and develop those prescription windows,” says Linn.

State lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are also thinking about how to increase the safe and effective use of prescribed fire to protect local communities and agricultural assets from destruction.

Rep. Matthew McQueen, D-Galisteo, and Rep. Gail Armstrong, R-Magdalena, are the sponsors of House Bill 57, the Prescribed Burn Act. The bill would make it easier for private landowners to conduct prescribed burns on their own property by clarifying liability issues and instructing the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s Forestry Division to develop prescribed burn training, a prescribed burn manager certification program and a statewide permitting system.

While there’s no minimizing the pandemic terrors, there’s also no denying artists of all stripes have had a chance to hunker down and focus on work. Whether this has been Terran Last Gun (Amskapi Piikani) creating affordable line drawings, Winoka Yepa (Diné) at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts digitizing entire exhibits, AMP Concerts producing live drive-in concerts or even just people kicking out commissions, smaller-scale gallery shows, online events, streaming, socially distanced openings… the list goes on, but the output has been extensive. Maybe it’s oddly easier to create when faced with sadness, or maybe it’s just that being forced to slow down and look for beautiful things has been a secret Godsend. It’s pretty tough that we can’t all congregate or go about our business, but it’s honestly a little nice to have a go-to excuse for not going

There is one place we are forever thankful for after this year, and that’s the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve. It’s got to be one of the best places in Santa Fe to escape, and during the March-May turmoil it was one of the few places out of the house where we found any peace. During spring the snowmelt sogs up the place. In fall the aspens crisp

I placed an order for Felipe’s Tacos by phone. Ten minutes later, owner Felipe Martinez handed me a sealed bag of still-hot burritos with a smile.

Days earlier, post after post on social media announced locals trying chef Martin Rios’ new Build-a-Bowl popup were in love.

Even earlier in the pandemic, a call to Second Street Brewery ended with killer fish and chips and a six-pack placed right into my car by a friendly worker. Kohnami has also placed sealed bags of absurdly affordable sushi/salmon/tempura in my car. If the landscape of foodservice as we know it will

3 anywhere. “I’d love to check out your weird thing, so-and-so,” we say, “but, like, COVID, you know?” We’re doing doctor’s appointments by phone, even interviews that would normally mean driving to someone’s house, being barked at by the dog, doing the whole pleasantries thing and then being stuck there for an hour all like, “Cool that you’re doing a thing, we guess?” Now our lives are full of “I totally get it,” statements when we beg off. We’re also pretty lucky in how seriously most of the people we know are taking this.

Presumably, they, too, are thrilled expectations have lowered. And with that, it’s nap time. (ADV)

We hated Zoom meetings at first, and we still would rather talk to our fellow humans in person when we can, but we have come to love virtual city meetings.

While they do cause accessibility issues for anyone without internet, overall virtual meetings offer a lot of advantages for the average Santa Fean trying to participate in city government.

You don’t need to hire a babysitter for five hours on a Wednesday night while you attend the City Council meeting downtown. You don’t have to pay for parking or worry about whether you’ll be able to catch the bus at 11pm when the meeting ends. Best of all, you can watch in your PJs and eat ice cream while you’re at it and call in to comment from bed. What could be better? (LC)

Oh how we’ve groaned and moaned over the loss of movie theaters. There’s something very special about a darkened space with strangers, the lady to your left reading out the titles, another guy shaking his drink, teenagers in front checking Instagram. Ah, memories.

We’ve eaten more than our fair share of takeout in recent months, and have become big fans of Back Road Pizza’s magnet rewards system. For every pizza you take home you get one round red magnet to put on your fridge, and once you’ve collected 10 you get a large, two-topping pizza free. Sure, tons of places have loyalty programs or punch cards. But Back Road, 1087 2nd St., is the only place we know of that uses magnets, which come with the added bonus of being able to keep photos of all the relatives you can’t see in person pinned to the fridge or create bright red magnet mosaic art.

The video curriculum featuring notable Black artists, historians, writers, etc. is meant to be rolled up in New Mexico Public Schools’ Black History Month lesson plans, and includes information from Black New Mexicans in eight key areas including history, literature, hip-hop, science and more. No place has ever had consistent access to relevant (or even accurate) info on Black history. This is straight up thrilling. (ADV)

The Santa Fe Public Library system has been busy setting up a variety of virtual public programming in 2021 for people of all different ages, on top of the convenient curbside pickup it already offers for all of your literature needs. There’s an entire committee made up of library staff that exclusively discuss ideas for programs and plan them based on certain themes or happenings in the community. Driving Through the Hills and other Simple Pleasures

Driving along an unassuming stretch of West Alameda you’ll spot, behind a metal guardrail, an enormous mural that spells out “O’Ga Po’Geh,” which means White Shell Water Place—the name by which Santa Fe was known to Natives long before the Villa Real de Yadda Yadda bit ever came to be. The painting completely covers the wall with soft blues, purples and yellows. Inside the lettering, Native artists painted a Tewa pueblo as a way to honor the original name and people of Santa Fe, according to the Three Sisters Collective, a local art and activist group.

Connected Through Time and Space Chaco research continues to makes connections between New Mexico and Mesoamerica Visitors to Chaco Canyon National Monument often marvel at what’s been lost to time and what remains. As they stand in the shadow of towering stone walls constructed ten lifetimes ago, doorways reinforce images of the humans who once walked there.

Yet, the structures don’t tell the stories of the past, so proponents of the sciences of archaeology and anthropology study objects and craft narratives to attempt to learn about how people lived.

Patricia Crown is among them. A book she recently published with the help of other researchers called The House of the Cylinder Jars (2020, UNM Press) reveals the culmination of nearly two decades of work on pottery found in one particular room and what it might represent.

Crown, who teaches archaeology at the University of New Mexico and is a Weatherhead Scholar at the School for Advanced research in Santa Fe, gained notoriety in 2009 with the discovery of chocolate residue in vessels from Chaco.

more firmly established a long suspected link with Mesoamerica.

“People in Chaco were aware of materials and species and objects that were thousands of kilometers away and it really indicates how connected the world was 1,000 years ago,” Crown says in a video produced by SAR. “People out there were aware of a much wider world than we probably would have anticipated.”

Reading in the Arroyo: An Occasional Column About Books New in town? Read all about it!

he Trader Joe’s parking lot is filled with out-of-state license plates.

Ghosted by tourists, Airbnb hosts are renting out glorified hotel rooms with hot plates and mini fridges for $1,300 a month. We’ve got more mattress stores than ever.

Call it what you want—pandemic-related relocation, gentrification, or an accelerated version of business as usual in Santa Fe—but it seems like a lot of people are moving to town these days. This is an old story, beginning with the Spanish moving to the Tewa stronghold of O’Gah Po’Geh in the 1600s, the Americans arriving in the 1800s, the East Coast artists and tuberculosis patients seeking refuge in the early 1900s and the second-homers resettling neighborhoods from the 1980s onward.

According to writer John Pen La Farge, the latter group sounds a lot like what the current influx is often accused of: “They are more transient, more the sort who is interested in their own good and less the sort who is interested in others,’ more selfish and inward, and less neighborly or communal.”

I moved here almost a decade ago with a sixth sense that it was home. But it took two jobs at local bookstores, reading everything I could about New Mexico’s history, food, culture, wars and culture wars until I felt like I belonged. Let’s suppose that all these relative newcomers need is

a fair amount of time holed up with some good books about their chosen stomping grounds. This column is for them.

If I were still in the first full flush of my romance with the state, I’d start with a trifecta of the New Mexico canon. Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather, published in 1927, tells the story of one of Santa Fe’s most famous immigrants, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, who built downtown’s crown jewel on a site that had hosted two previous churches. Around the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the Virginia-born, Nebraska-bred Cather weaves narratives of Acoma and Isleta Pueblos, Kit Carson, Manuel Antonio Chaves and the Penitente brotherhood, among other historic New Mexicans.

Richard Bradford’s Red Sky at Morning, a 1968 classic, shows how a 17-year-old transplant from Alabama to the mountain village of Corazón Sagrado transcends his mother’s disgust for “tacky, dusty little Westerners” to overcome racial prejudice and become a contributing member of his new society.

Another coming-of-age tale from 1972, Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima, reflects the Hispano culture of rural New Mexico from a major player in the mainstream emergence of Chicano literature.

If I were craving a more recent voice in fiction, I’d check out Kirstin Valdez Quade’s incandescent 2015 short story collection Night at the Fiestas, a contemporary take on Hispanic life in working-class New Mexico.

Then I’d cleanse my palate with some chile.

bioregion, with chile at its flaming heart,” writes Stanley Crawford in the foreword to The Chile Chronicles: Tales of a New Mexico Harvest by Carmella Padilla. A glut of books has been published about chile since this one came out in 1997. But The Chile Chronicles, created over a study of four consecutive growing seasons from Embudo to Las Cruces and accompanied by lush full-page photographs by Jack Parsons, is the most readable and New Mexico-centric. (Speaking of agriculture, Crawford’s 1988 book Mayordomo, chronicling a year in the life of a Northern New Mexico acequia, is another must-read.)

Once you’ve delved into the history, science and seasons of our state crop, grab The Rancho de Chimayó Cookbook by Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison and learn how to cook a few staples to tide you over until indoor dining reopens. Both the Jamisons and Rancho de Chimayó Restaurante owner Florence Jaramillo are James Beard Award honorees (though Bill did pass in 2015), and the green and red chile, posole and blue corn pancake recipes here are imparted with healthy doses of respect, history and culinary wisdom.

One Amazon reviewer calls the 2009 anthology Telling New Mexico, sparked by the permanent exhibit of the same name at the New Mexico History Museum, “full of social justice warrior revisionism.” I don’t know about you, but that description would entice me, and this is the book I’m most likely to flip through when I want to learn the unexpected. Edited by cultural historian Marta Weigle, its 483 pages are divided into seven sections of essays that are roughly chronological but wild-

ly diverse in topics and writers. “Becoming the Southwest” alone covers Billy the Kid, land grants, the Black community of New Mexicans called Blackdom, Native-Anglo relationships and the development of tourism.

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Santa Fe, Sunstone Press published White Shell Water Place in 2010. Editor F. Richard Sanchez gathers essays by 10 contributors of Pueblo, Diné, Zuni and Genízaro ancestry that offer stories and scholarship about the city’s Native American cultural foundations. Gregory Cajete (Santa Clara) tackles “A Pueblo Perspective of the History of Santa Fe,” while Diné lawyer Carol Harvey explains what it means, on a very personal level, to embrace both Navajo and Hispanic faiths.

In order to challenge the myth of Santa Fe as created by the people have rewritten its history in their image only, we need more books like White Shell Water Place.

Finally, in your ongoing effort to hear as many Santa Fe voices as possible, read La Farge’s always engaging 2001 collection of oral histories, Turn Left at the Sleeping Dog. Reading through the recollections of 24 townies, including La Farge’s father Oliver, the artist Jerry West, the priest and writer Fray Angélico Chávez, state historian Myra Ellen Jenkins and journalist Calla Hay, you may find yourself mourning a Santa Fe you never quite knew. That was a small town where, as Richard Bradford found, it was more useful to tell a visitor to his house in the late ‘50s to turn left where a large shaggy black dog slept every afternoon than to have him navigate the unlabeled streets near Acequia Madre.

But the memories in Turn Left can also fuel a bond with present-day Santa Fe, however booming and filled with inequality it may be.

“It’s an elegant little city; it’s got charming streets; it’s got charming atmosphere in certain parts,” says one interviewee. “Those things, I think, can survive.”

Rothschild would spend two weeks in a friend’s small casita near St. Francis Drive and Agua Fria Street., stuck in the depths of over-analytical thought patterns and sheer loneliness. Songs started taking more cohesive shape. Rothschild would spend the next two weeks roping in musician friends to help him record his recently released self-titled debut EP (Ottmar Liebert, Jon Gagan, Dana Winograd and Yuko Shimokawa to name a few), and it seemingly signifies a new era for the local while reinforcing musical aspects we know about him—and introducing things we don’t. y the time news of the US COVID-19 crisis reached Santa Fe multi-instrumentalist Robby Rothschild in Australia last March, he was concerned he’d be trapped down under without a lifeline. The former Lizard House and Round Mountain member was touring as Kip “Seventeen” Winger’s drummer and, he says, the suspense was intense.

“There was real unease going on,” he tells SFR, “and I almost thought I wasn’t going to be able to get back into the country. I hadn’t gotten to see my kids in a while…I was in this very raw, emotional space.”

Rothschild also recently went through a separation and divorce from his longtime partner (though he’s lightning-fast to praise his ex as a wonderful parent and longtime life collaborator), deepening what he already calls a propensity for melancholy.

Songs started forming in his head.

Some grew from bits and pieces he’d worked on with his Round Mountain partner (Rothschild’s brother, Char), others came new, fresher and more immediate. The process served both as a means to quiet down the darker thoughts, and also as a signpost that he could create independently from his brother and other musicians.

Robby Rothschild feels like what we’d expect from an Americana songwriter at first, but the deeper one explores its six songs, the more surprises reveal themselves. Even on opener “Untie Me,” Rothschild incorporates the subtlest Irish folk nod while deftly changing chords in unpredictable ways, taking the musicality to places both unexpected yet oddly inevitable. It’s like when someone points something out and it all feels so obvious—only we’d never have thought it ourselves.

“I want to hold my truth so the blaze of youth can work me fully over,” he sings on the track, dubbed “Untie Me,” “An open fire on the white beaches…”

Art keeps us young, or at least receptive to new lessons, and it seems Rothschild is both lamenting the passage of time and place while staying open to whatever comes next.

“It had become something of a…if I imagine what COVID has felt like, it’s felt

like a changing point, and this album for me became the central focus of that,” he says. “I could feel something in my body that this was what I wanted to do, the seeds to follow it further.”

This is no more apparent than on “Encircled,” the EP’s midpoint and a return of the oceanic theme. “This aching’s going to last,” he sings; looking back, absorbing more change but accepting pain is a path to personal evolution. It’s a tear-jerker, no doubt, but lacking in pretense—this motherfucker cuts deep and true right alongside Rothschild’s almost-breaking vocal work.

If one absolutely must liken his voice to a known entity, it’s almost like someone hurt James Taylor real good, but this is no vocal facsimile, it’s straight up one of the most sincere voice tracks I’ve heard in my entire life.

The EP closes out on a higher note with “Bead of Glass,” a slow build piece of kora music (think of it like a West African cousin to the harp if you don’t know the instrument) and tribute to fatherhood. This one stings, too, though not with loss or remembrance, but in that there is no purer love than that of a parent. Sea imagery loops back in again and Rothschild promises: “I give my soul to your eyes.”

Goosebumps. Just gorgeous.

“And I’ve got more to say,” Rothschild tells SFR, “but I like taking it as slowly as the situation requires which, in this moment, is kind of slow. It’s like…you know when you start a fire, and sometimes you put down fresh kindling with old coals and you’re trying to get the new wood to catch fire? If you do one really big, fast blow, nothing happens, but if you do it slowly and increase gradually, you finally coax it hot enough to ignite the wood.”

If he’s saying he has more to give musically or emotionally, I’ll take it any day.

You’re going to start seeing movies and television that were “bravely” filmed during the swirling, imposing pandemic. The kind that make the virus part of the plot. But as the onslaught of oh-so-topical projects starts to hit our screens, one question will remain for the those in search of quality entertainment: Why, when the excellent Michael Sheen/David Tennant production Staged exists on Hulu, would we ever put ourselves through the tired and unremarkable Locked Down with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor now streaming on HBO Max? The short answer is that we shouldn’t.

The longer answer has something to do with Hathaway’s Linda and Ejiofor’s Paxton, a well-to-do American/English couple living in London who split up just as the UK COVID-19 lockdowns come into effect. We observe the aftermath. The well-to-do bit has everything to do with Linda’s CEO position with some international company called Miracore. She’s racked with doubt. Paxton, meanwhile, once went to prison, loves his motorcycle so damn much and apparently has toned down his former wild ‘n’

You remember David Arquette, right? The actor from the Hollywood family that also boasts Rosanna, Patricia and Alexis Arquette?

He was in Scream? Eight Legged Freaks? He married Courteney Cox? Yeah—that guy.

Anyway, turns out Arquette once had this super-promising acting career until the year 2000, when he joined the WCW pro wrestling league as a promotional stunt for the not-very-good movie Ready to Rumble (also with Scott Caan...ugh) and became its Heavyweight Champion of the World. This set off a firestorm of hate among the wrestling faithful, who’ve spent the last 20 years hating Arquette’s guts—and it almost certainly derailed his acting.

What’s a guy to do? Well, according to the documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette, the answer is to start wrestling for real, start training in earnest, hopefully to win the respect of…whoever…while simultaneously clearing out the cobwebs of mental illness and undoing two decades’ worth of ire from the wrestling community. And it’s a trip.

crazy ways to live in a posh multi-story house with a friendly hedgehog out back. Linda resents him for giving up his attitude even if he did it for her; Paxton likes poetry and reads it aloud in the streets to his neighbors. Gross.

The chemistry between the two is fleeting, though particularly smoldering during arguments. We understand things were said that cannot be unsaid, but somehow we got lost when, in the third act of the film, Linda and Paxton decide they’re maybe going to pull off a heist. See, Paxton’s courier service boss (Ben Kingsley) sends him to illegally transport a diamond from Harrod’s department store—the very diamond Linda’s company has…something to do with… somehow. Unclear. But they might steal it, and then it’s splitsville, baby. No looking back. Right?

Hathaway and Ejiofor do their best with Hathaway in particular doling out a decent mono-

logue or two. Ejiofor’s effortless charm always works. Still, as rom-coms go, it’s not that funny or romantic. As heist flicks go, it’s kind of too little, too late. It’s also hard to reconcile blink-andmiss-it performances from Kingsley, Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling and Ben Stiller as anything other than a list of actors who said “Sure, I’ve got 10 minutes to Zoom in a performance,” to director Doug Liman (he did Swingers, you know).

So, yeah, maybe just watch Staged? Or at least wait for something that isn’t quite so drawn out and mostly boring with so little payoff.

The youthful optimism reaches its inevitable halt, however, demonstrated by a sequence which finds the students participating in competitive military drills. Birdy leads what becomes an impromptu musical march that faces harsh rejection from the powers that be. When our leads realize “new” is still tantamount to “dangerous,” Herein’s strengths begin to falter. It descends into repetitive, soapy melodrama, and while boys screaming and crying about love can be a lot of queer fun, you can’t help but wish it would speed up. Given its strong start, this is a sad stumble.

Thankfully a wonderful finale keeps Liu’s film afloat, even if Herein sails into port weighted down.

Thus, it isn’t a knockout, but folks who like sentimental storytelling (yours truly) will fall hard; audiences unfamiliar with Taiwan’s cinematic style and output not so much. Still, Liu’s directorial future is bright and hopefully his subsequent works can find a better balance within the melodrama while holding tight to the naturalism at which he excels. when it dropped a few months back, but now that it’s found a home at Hulu, it’s endlessly watchable in a trainwreck kind of way.

Arquette produces his own redemption story, one in which he gets fit, travels to Mexico to train with luchadores, enrolls in a real-life wrestling school and ultimately finds himself while being accepted within the wrestling world. It honestly feels like a long con bit at first, but as scenes wherein backyard wrestlers seriously mess him up or even an ER visit that comes after a bout results in a nicked throat artery show, there’s something to learn from the star of See Spot Run—homeboy is dedicated and, as the people who sincerely love wrestling are quick to remind you, even if it’s akin to a play, it’s still a sport (Arquette’s athletics prove that, too).

We also get interviews with living Arquette siblings (RIP Alexis), Cox herself and Arquette’s present-day wife, the journalist Christina McLarty. McLarty’s insistence that hubs is for real lends credence to the journey, and it’s heartwarming to see her support in action. Both give the audience even more of a reason to root for the guy. You’ll almost surely come to respect Arquette by the end, and you’ll appreciate how much he really, truly means it. (ADV) Hulu, R, 91 min.

+ WELL CRAFTED CHARACTER DRAMA - BIT MUCH ON THE MANY, MANY TEARS

Seems like queer East Asian filmmakers might see Taiwan as a beacon in their region. The country’s far from perfect, but as the only one in the whole region to permit same-sex marriage and other civil rights, filmmakers there are on a mission to capture the queer experience in case it falls victim to stereotypes or bizarre audience expectations. So comes Your Name Engraved Herein, just reaching American audiences on streaming services after garnering a whopping $100 million in Taiwan this past fall.

Director Kuang-Hui Liu’s second feature opens as Taiwan’s decades-long martial law ends circa 1987. A new freedom dawns and the students at an all-male Catholic school find themselves in the midst of a cultural euphoria. Reserved Jia-han (Edward Chen) is smitten with the mercurial, wild-spirited Birdy (Tseng Jing-Hua), but despite the hopes of a new enlightenment, the patriarchal sway of the old ways still holds firm in the mind of Taiwan’s citizens.

Herein’s path forward is familiar, but expressed in such a literary quality that its tropes feel fresher.

The relationship causes problems with the people in Elwood’s life. At one point a psychiatrist tries to convince him to “struggle with reality.” Elwood replies, “I wrestled with reality for 40 years and I am happy to state that I finally won.” I’m happy to tell you this story, Aries, because it’s a good lead in to my counsel for you: I suspect that one of your long wrestles with reality will yield at least a partial victory in the coming weeks. And it will be completely real, as opposed to Elwood’s Harvey. Congratulations!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The 17th-century Libran polymath Thomas Browne had a brilliant, well-educated mind. He authored many books on various subjects, from science to religion, and was second only to Shakespeare in the art of coining new words.

He did have a blind spot, however. He referred to sex as the “trivial and vulgar way of union” and “the foolishest act a wise man commits in all his life.”

Most of us have pockets of ignorance like that— aspects that qualify as learning disabilities or intellectual black holes. And now and then there come times when we benefit from checking in with these deficiencies and deciding whether to take any fresh steps to wisen them up. Now is such a time for you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The light of the North Star takes a long time to reach us, even though it’s traveling 186,000 miles per second. The beams it shows us tonight first embarked when Shakespeare was alive on Earth. And yet that glow seems so fresh and pure. Are there any other phenomena in your life that are metaphorically comparable? Perhaps an experience you had months ago that is only now revealing its complete meaning? Or a seed you planted years ago that is finally ripening into its mature expression? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to take inventory of such things, Taurus. It will also be a favorable phase to initiate innovations that will take some time to become fully useful for you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In 1971, astronaut Alan Shepard had the great privilege of landing on the moon in a spacecraft, then walking on the lunar surface. CANCER (June 21-July 22): William Shakespeare worked with another playwright in creating three plays: Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen, and Cardenio.

The lucky collaborator was John Fletcher, who was popular and influential in his era. I propose that we name him one of your role models in 2021. Here’s why: You will have an enhanced potential to engage in fertile partnerships with allies who are quite worthy of you. I encourage you to be on the lookout for opportunities to thrive on symbiosis and synergy.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Canadian journalist Nick Ashdown is amazed that white people in North America are so inhibited about revealing their real feelings. He writes, “How bizarre that in English, the word ‘emotional’ is used pejoratively, as though passion implies some sort of weakness.” He marvels that the culture seems to “worship nonchalance” and regard intense expressiveness as uncool or unprofessional. I’m going to encourage you to embody a different approach in the coming days. I don’t mean to suggest that you should be an out-ofcontrol maniac constantly exploding with intensity.

But I do hope you will take extra measures to respect and explore and reveal the spirited truth about yourself.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it,” declares actor and comedian Mindy Kaling. Is that an unromantic sentiment? Maybe. But more importantly, it’s evidence that she treasures her sleep. And that’s admirable! She is devoted to giving her body the nurturing it needs to be healthy. Let’s make Kaling your patron saint for now. It’s a favorable time to upgrade your strategies for taking very good care of yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): All of us go through phases when our brains work at a higher level than usual. I’m guessing that you’re about to enjoy one of these times. In fact, I won’t be shocked if you string together a series of ingenious thoughts and actions. I hope you use your enhanced intelligence for important matters—like making practical improvements in your life! Please don’t waste it on trivial matters like arguments on Facebook or Twitter.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Today the Capricorn artist Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) is regarded as an important and influential painter. Early in his career, though, he was rejected and even ridiculed by critics.

One reason was that he loved making still-life paintings, which were considered low art. Of his 584 works, about 200 of them were of inanimate, commonplace objects. Fruit was his specialty. Typically he might spend 100 separate sessions in perfecting a particular bowl of apples. “Don’t you want to take a vacation from painting fruit?” he was asked.
