Green Market “The whole business idea started when, years ago, I had started growing as a caretaker for a cancer patient,” Aarons tells SFR. “It really affected me when he passed away but one of the things that stuck with me is how proud I was of the difference I made on his last days and the impact this plant has for so many.”

Aarons’ mother, Doris Valdez, is the president of the company and his father, Stephen Aarons, a criminal defense attorney, is acting as general counsel. Also involved is the younger Aarons’ cousin, Alex Costello, who owns an IT company called Atum Tech, and fiancé Stephanie Portillo.

Valdez grew up in Santa Fe, while her husband is from the Midwest and settled in New Mexico’s capital in the 1980s.

“I worked for the museums for a hundred years—30 years—and now I’m retired,” says Valdez. “So this gives me the opportunity to be there for them and help them, to push them forward.”

If all goes to plan, a 10,000-square-foot building on Siler Road will soon house four grow rooms, holding a total of 240 mature plants, a processing space and a retail storefront. The company is finishing renovations, which the city and state must approve before cultivation can start.

The state Regulation and Licensing Department’s Cannabis Control Division has received 13 applications from businesses looking to operate in Santa Fe, a search of the department’s recently-launched public portal shows. (A map from the Department of Health counts 14 existing dispensaries in the city licensed under the medical program.)

SFR spoke with one of those businesses, Endo, which is owned and operated by a local family who is applying for a license. The owners of Roadrunner Manufacturing, an Edgewood microbusiness that was among the first cannabis companies in Santa Fe County to receive licensure, also took some time to chat about its efforts to prepare for recreational sales to begin in April.

Both companies’ owners, while enthusiastic about their futures in the industry, point to challenges ranging from finding a space to operate to plant-count limits.

The companies that have applied thus far are dispersed fairly evenly across Santa Fe, with a couple locations downtown, a couple on the Southside—which is, for now, home to only a handful of dispensaries— and a few others along Cerrillos Road.

With recreational sales expected to begin in a little over two months, no new licenses have been issued in Santa Fe. New Mexico doesn’t have a cap on the number of cannabis licenses that can be issued, so anyone who applies and fulfills the state’s requirements will receive licensure.

The family behind Endo—named in part as a nod to 1990s hip-hop culture, referring to high-quality cannabis grown indoors— has high hopes as they work to enter an industry with which they’re already familiar.

The group expected to start growing a month or two ago, but their target now is March or April.

From seed to harvest, it can take four months to grow cannabis, meaning they could be ready to start selling their own product by mid-summer. Meanwhile, they’re considering trying to buy wholesale from other producers and sell out of their retail shop, but there’s concern that there won’t be enough product available.

“In the long run, so long as we get it off the ground, I think we’ll be fine,” Stephen Aarons says. “It’s not a rush to be there for the April tsunami, but it would have been nice.”

Despite some hurdles, Ian Aarons says he’s optimistic about Endo’s future and hopes it will be a positive force in the community, in part by providing good jobs. He hasn’t locked down how many people he’ll need to hire or how much they’ll be paid, but $15 an hour is likely the minimum of what the company would offer, he says.

Farther south, in Edgewood, Roadrunner Manufacturing got licensed earlier this month to start growing, with approval for manufacturing and retail pending.

The company opened in 2018 after hemp became federally legal to produce and offers CBD products out of Verve Health Shop.

CEO Bob Boylan says he thinks microbusinesses like his can set themselves apart from larger companies through customer service.

“Our girls that work there [at Verve] are really amazing young ladies and they connect really strongly with the customer base and know them by name,” Boylan tells SFR. “We believe that it’s service that’s ultimately going to help the micros survive in the climate of the big boys, that that’s truly what will be the difference if we make it or don’t make it.”

One challenge for microbusinesses, Boylan says, is the restrictive production limit.

CCD issued an emergency rule change earlier this month, temporarily doubling plant-count limits for producers.

Microbusinesses are defined by state law as having 200 mature plants or fewer, so they weren’t affected by the rule.

Senate Bill 100, introduced at the Roundhouse last week by state Sen. Linda Lopez, D-Albuquerque, and Rep. Andrea Romero, D-Santa Fe, would change that, increasing the limit for microbusinesses to 1,000 plants.

“The only problem with that is the micros will not have the funding or the physical infrastructure to even accommodate that without having to scale up themselves,” Boylan says.

But, like the Aarons family, he’s excited for what’s to come.

“There’s some challenges but we use a wellness model, so we’re kind of a hybrid in how we’re going to approach the rec market,” Boylan says. “Medical cannabis patients are not going away and they need to have an environment that’s a little more empathetic and education-based.”

Food for Thought Lujan Grisham administration hopes investments in agriculture infrastructure and farm programs can get ahead of New Mexico’s aching food insecurity issue

food assistance prior to the pandemic, with families of color participating in SNAP at higher rates than white, non-Hispanic families.

While the number of households receiving SNAP benefits provides one view of the state’s need to address hunger, Emily Wildau, a research and policy analyst with Voices for Children, says it’s important to “look at poverty, unemployment, homeownership, and…a cost of food index,” to understand how hunger affects youths in the state. These factors, Wildau says, outline the parameters of those experiencing “food insecurity.”

In 2020, the data book reports, a quarter of children remained food insecure, lacking access to adequate, healthy food, with significant disparities across New Mexico. While 23% of Santa Fe kids experience food insecurity, 37% of McKinley County children are limited in their access to healthy, reliable meals.

t’s as simple as dignity, says Juliana Ciano, program director of Reunity Resources in Santa Fe. “People want the dignity of choosing the food that they like, the food that they want when they want it,” she tells SFR. The success of food programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Double Up Food Bucks, Ciano explains, stems from the power of choice and the increased volume of fresh produce families can afford.

While Santa Feans redeemed over $5,000 in produce using Double Up Food Bucks from Reunity Resources’ farm last year, Ciano says this amount represents just a fraction of the need across the state.

Data from the 2021 New Mexico Kids Count, an annual publication from the nonprofit New Mexico Voices for Children, shows that children in the state continue to face food insecurity that these programs aim to eliminate; experts say the pandemic has heightened the hunger crisis.

An initiative from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham calls for major investments in farm and hunger relief programs to lay the groundwork for a better food future for New Mexico.

state,” says Kendal Chavez, food and hunger coordinator with the governor’s office.

For the Food, Farm and Hunger Initiative, the governor’s team is requesting $24 million, all of which is recurring apart from a $10 million request for capital outlay improvements and a one-time, $500,000 investment to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.

The recommendation for a cash injection into New Mexico’s agriculture industry and food systems represents the beginning of a five-year strategic plan, Chavez explains, to wrestle New Mexico from the top of the list of the hungriest states in the nation.

The range of programs outlined in the initiative includes $700,000 for additional funding for Double Up Food Bucks, which allows SNAP dollars to count twice at farmers markets, and $10 million in capital outlay dollars for food infrastructure improvements.

“None of [the programs] are radical in the sense that we don’t know if they’re going to impact New Mexican families and our food system,” Chavez tells SFR. Chavez notes that a budget recommendation from the Legislative Finance Committee doesn’t include any appropriation for the governor’s initiative, but she hopes the

Legislature will provide support in the coming weeks while hammering out the state’s finances. LFC acknowledges the negative impact the pandemic has on food security, recommending $5 million in non-recurring funds for food banks across the state to address hunger.

Last year, beneficiaries of the food assistance program who shopped at the Santa Fe Farmers Market redeemed over $180,000.

This continues a trend first observed when the pandemic hit New Mexico, says Andrea Fisher Maril, executive director of the Santa Fe Farmers Market Institute.

“In 2020, the SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks program grew by 97%, with 70% new users,” Fisher Maril tells SFR. She points to the benefits for farmers and the local economy.

“The fact that they’re selling more through SNAP and Double Up right now means that they have more income,” Fisher Maril says.

David Sundberg, a program director with the farmers market institute, says investments in agriculture—such as the New Mexico Grown initiative, which connects community centers with locally produced products—are essential to rebuilding the integrity of New Mexico’s food systems.

These programs, which are part of the governor’s initiative, allow state-supported food systems including schools and senior centers “to be able to go directly to the farmers, basically, and say ‘I’d love to have your potatoes, I’d love to have your beans, I’d love to have your lettuce on my plate,’” Sundberg tells SFR. Additionally, legislators have taken up the issue to get healthy food onto New Mexicans’ plates.

Sen. Liz Stefanics, D-Cerrillos, has put forward five bills to address food insecurity. She sees her own legislative efforts as complementary tools to the executive recommendations.

“We are supporting the governor’s hunger initiative and we are also coming up with proposals to fund other gaps,” Stefanics tells SFR.

n late 2019, after years lying dormant, SFR attempted to relaunch our legendary 3-Minute Film Fest. It seemed a promising affair, too, with dozens more submissions from local filmmakers than we ever thought possible, plus judges like filmmaker and Three Sisters Collective co-founder Autumn Billie (Diné) and Emmy-winning documentarian Kaela Waldstein of Mountain Mover Media.

Then, as we’re all so sick of reading, the pandemic happened, forcing us to delay the fest through all of 2020 and most of 2021. The filmmakers were, how to put this—kind of bummed. But in the end, we managed to cobble together an in-person event at the Center for Contemporary Arts mere days before the new year where, to a sold out house, we presented nearly 90 minutes of funny, strange, clever or otherwise all-too-real films clocking in at three minutes or under.

We were also proud to crown a film dubbed Minecraft Santa Fe as the winner.

The movie from Ehren Kee Natay and Dylan Tenorio (both Kewa Pueblo and Diné) was produced through local nonprofit Littleglobe for its Littleglobe TV series and takes place entirely within the video game Minecraft, a pixelated and adorable building sim wherein anyone with enough patience can create any type of world they wish. Across the globe, users have built everything from Studio Ghibli’s iconic worlds and The Simpsons’ Springfield to the Titanic, Notre Dame and—well, if you can think of something, it probably exists in Minecraft. Natay and Tenorio set their sights admittedly a little smaller, creating a version of the Santa Fe Plaza and its surrounding areas, replete with the Palace Avenue clock, Frito pies at the Five & Dime, the bandstand shelter and, as a bit of an easter egg, a pueblo-like structure hidden beneath what would be Water Street. They also included the obelisk.

Now, every Santa Fean knows activists tore the monument down on Oct. 20, 2020, Indigenous Peoples Day, née Columbus Day in Santa Fe (and other more forward-thinking communities around the country), but the purpose of including the once-erect stone slabs in their film is part of a more intensive would-be project from Natay and Tenorio through which they hope to engage local youths and/or classrooms in discussions about the future of our fair city.

The film includes numerous young gamers excitedly rushing their avatars around the Plaza to identify the spaces and places they know. When they eventually come to the obelisk, they discuss its demise and plan together: First they transform the thing into a water fountain. Then,

deciding dance a bit more universal, they tear it down and, through open dialogue, choose to rebuild the site as a dance floor for breakers. And then they dance.

As the city’s CHART process for public engagement surrounding the meaning of monuments—like the one with the racist inscription that had stood on the Plaza since shortly after the Civil War— continues, the up-and-coming filmmakers are setting out to collect data of their own through their Minecraft vision of Santa Fe. It’s not only a better means to engage with youths, who comprise a major chunk of the

game’s concurrent 141 million users, it’s surely more fun than filling out questionnaires and attending Zoom meetings.

The process to address the Plaza will likely be a long one. Still, with Valerie Martinez of nonprofit Artful Life, on contract with the city to run CHART, telling SFR the organization is willing and able to adapt to any community input, including future data gathered through Minecraft, Natay and Tenorio might have created one of the most significantly welcoming ways for Santa Fe’s younger citizens to have a voice.

It just needs to be adopted in the classroom.

Wherein real life imitates art.

SFR: What is your main impetus in creating, cultivating and running this slice of Santa Fe in Minecraft?

Ehren Kee Natay: It was first a way for us to have some socialization during the pandemic. I remember us kind of joking like, ‘It would be so cool to be paid to do stuff in Minecraft,’ and were joking we should do it for an episode of Littleglobe TV. We were laughing about it, but I started thinking about it seriously—what if we did something that was based off somewhere in Santa Fe? I thought, we can make something that looks like a pueblo structure; we can have red

earth, cactuses; kind of make it like a desert scene. We started talking about other places in Santa Fe that are recognizable, and the one place everybody knows is the Plaza.

Dylan Tenorio: I think it was being able to just play with a friend and make something you both kind of knew. When you’re building something together, it’s just like playing with Legos, but you’re also using your memory to think about what things are really like. I think the creative impetus came from that. It was something like, we just really wanted to keep playing together. It was ‘let’s

make this thing people can recognize and they can see just like we can.’

DT: I would think of it as something of a liminal space or a transitionary zone. This isn’t the real Plaza, but it’s something that could lead us to a Plaza we can all agree with. This is a great space, and it’s a space that will have to transition before we can get it to be where we want it in real life. In Minecraft, you see all these blocky forms, like the sun in the sky—it’s not exactly real, it feels like it’s been constructed, there’s artificial lighting.

Was this before the obelisk was torn down?

EKN: I believe it was definitely already torn down. The obelisk had come down, but it was before CHART. DT: The youth episode of Littleglobe TV was in June, and we were working on this heavily in early June or late May.

Did the idea come together all at once, or did it take time to formulate?

EKN: It was like an aha moment. Dylan would work on it, and I would come in at different times when he wasn’t on. It was really fun to just show up and see, there’s the Palace of the Governors or Dylan adding some trees or structures; railings or stop signs. We’d continually add things, so the whole time we’re thinking we had to show this to somebody. We’re thinking we had to bring some kids in here and show them what we could do. We were studying the possibilities as we created the world.

DT: I think the sentiment was already there, the idea was the question of who could decide, who does decide [what goes on the Plaza], would be the youth, or should be. Our idea that sprouted from that was that we were really just doing this thing that doesn’t affect us right now, but the youths are the ones who’ll have to live with it.

Did you create the world from memory, or was it researched? It seems kind of dream-like.

EKN: We used Google maps, and there was one time when I drove around the Plaza to really get a feel for it. But that whole time we were building, it wasn’t until it was like 85 or 90% done that I went to see the Plaza.

It was kind of surreal to see this place I had mapped out.

Santa Fe as we know it is built atop stolen land, and in Natay and Tenorio’s Minecraft version, the notion becomes literal.

Was the goal to always engage youth on their turf, as it were? How did you find young people to play?

EKN: It was funny because [my friend] Colin [White] introduced me to Minecraft, and Colin was a breakdancer at Warehouse 21, where the main breakdancing teacher, Ricky Rodriguez...his two boys would play Minecraft, and Colin would be watching them, and it was something we could all do together. Luke and Ricky Jr. would play with us, so we already had this experience where it’s totally different playing with kids— where their imagination goes. We wanted to have that youthful interaction when we were making the film, so we put out a call on Facebook to see if anybody else would want to join, and we got one person from the Navajo Nation who has a son who plays Minecraft. Plus Luke and Ricky.

DT: It’s a definite different experience playing Minecraft with children. They really go.

For me to play as an adult, I think of structures and how I can efficiently build things.

There’s a system to it, but when a kid goes in, it’s anything goes. So, when I heard about Ehren and the kids playing, we thought we could really see if they could figure out what they want to see in the middle of some place they recognize, like the Plaza. So CHART’s trying to figure out what’s happening and we just were like, ‘This could be another way, and people could definitely go to this virtual place and show us what they would like to see.’

Checking In With CHART

he City of Santa Fe officially approved the CHART process— otherwise known as Culture, History, Art, Reconciliation and Truth— in January last year to identify and address community concerns surrounding the felled obelisk, as well as the future of public art and/or monuments on the Plaza. By July, it hired Albuquerquebased nonprofit Artful Life as the project facilitator.

Led by Santa Fe-born Valerie Martinez, formerly of local nonprofit Littleglobe, Artful Life immediately set about forming a team of paid facilitators and interns, all of whom are Santa Fe residents, and creating an outreach and engagement model that late last week, held its first-ever Zoom dialogue session to address one of a number of upcoming topics: monuments.

Martinez tells SFR that prior to the session, public outreach and online surveys pulled in the rough equivalent “of a 300-page book, single-spaced, in terms of data.” That information will continue to inform the topics for the dialogue sessions, which will run monthly for the time being. Each topic will be announced ahead of time to allow potential participants time to register for the session and prepare. And while Martinez says she understands “monuments” is a nebulous term, she is also quick to point out that her organization has not and will not be making any decisions about the talking points, the future of the Plaza or otherwise. The topics, she notes, are dictated by CHART participants, and Artful Life’s position in the process exists solely

to gather information from and for the community.

“The survey launched last September, we had four months, and since online surveys tend to skew a little older, we made a particular effort to get to younger audiences,” Martinez says. “Anybody can register [for the survey and dialogue sessions], and we take that information and book people for particular times.

They tell us their preferences and we can accommodate their needs—they can also request sessions in Spanish or that are bilingual.”

Martinez says it’s a little too early to have identified any particular patterns in the data Artful Life has gathered for CHART, but that 86 Santa Fe residents attended the first dialogue session. That may not sound like many, but it resulted in a goldmine all on its own. And there’s more to come.

“What I’d say,” she continues, “is that the first months will be creating that administrative structure and foundation, and then we launch a wide array of public events. These dialogue sessions are just one type, so we’ll also be hosting other kinds of community conversations.

There will be lots of ways for people to participate.”

For now, she says, the best way to add your voice to the mix is to engage through chartsantafe.com. There, interested parties can also learn more about the 18-person team working on the process and sign up for dialogue sessions and surveys. The goal is for the process to adapt and evolve over time based on community needs. CHART facilitators, for example, are willing to talk with anyone interested in voicing an opinion, be they a single person, a DIY organization or what-have-you.

“The great thing is that anybody can contact us any time with information, and I think we’ve said this from the beginning, that the process is thoroughly planned and depends entirely on the input we’re getting,” Martinez explains.

“But it’s also iterative, so we learn and adapt as we go. We need to learn along the way. For example, one thing we’re looking at is one of the hardest populations to reach, ages 20 to 29, who are maybe not at colleges, they’re working in service jobs; we’re doing our best in the midst of a pandemic for more in-person outreach, and we’re looking to demographics of the county to help us understand where we need to reach out in more creative ways.”

Have more users signed up?

DT: So far, that initiative hasn’t been completely sent out. We have, as Littleglobe, introduced this idea to a lot of local teachers who did like the idea, but there was no initiative after that point. We’ve gotten some teachers who like the idea of students expressing what home means to them through Minecraft; what structures they could build that they relate to what they call home.

EKN: We would be up to having this in classrooms, but it’s been hard for us to make this connection. One thing we hope that comes out of getting some publicity is someone speaks up. There’s a lot we could do here if we step up.

Let’s say a bunch people read this story and want to engage with your Minecraft world. Would you want to share your findings with CHART and the city?

DT: I’d say the original notion of this was for a youth episode for Littleglobe TV, and this was definitely made for people to see what the youths are doing in Santa Fe. But we realized this could definitely be a lot bigger than that, and I think we are interested in helping the city have more input from the people who will actually inherit these spaces.

EKN: I think so. We should start thinking about things all-inclusively, including children and elders. People who don’t have access to getting their voice out there in ways that really touch others—through art, music, through games, even. Especially with the pandemic, we learned that we can meet whoever we want if we set up a Zoom call, do a video Facebook; we can meet these people—if they’re on the internet we can make it happen. We can connect to people going through the same things.

We can go across the world. What might they have to say about similar things?

That could be valuable.

What’s your endgame here, if there is one?

EKN: Dylan and I have been talking about doing the next phase of this as part of Midtown. We want to keep the idea going, so we’ve talked about recreating…what would be the easiest place in Midtown to create? It’s a section that will impact the people of Santa Fe in a far greater way than the obelisk has. I’d like knowing there might be more opportunities for support, financially and with participation and engagement with the community, and from Littleglobe, which funded the original project.

DT: I think it’s definitely a growing thing.

I don’t think we know all the answers yet, because it’s a lot of considering resources and accessibility for people to get on this kind of platform and the actual input about who can express themselves through Minecraft. I think people who are used to video games can get it, but those who aren’t, might not. It’s a bigger conversation that would be great to have, and maybe this is not the only way we can express these types of ideas.

Maybe there are other avenues for getting voices out there, this is just one of them.

So what happens next?

DT: Probably the idea of Midtown, or something that would be in the next Littleglobe TV episode. What part of Midtown would we want to build? There are different ideas going around, though we work with a relatively big team and it gets bigger during a production, so there are 20 people working and Ehren and I are just two of the 20. One idea I had was to perhaps have alums from the College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art & Design talk about their memories while they walk around the campus— in Minecraft—just to voice what kind of lives were lived there, what kind of place that was that is no longer there; to un-familiarize the familiar.

EKN: I would really like to see some interest [in Minecraft Santa Fe] or somebody who can help us into interacting with classrooms. Like I said, we put out a call to see if kids would log in and play, and we got three kids, two of which were because I knew their parents. I’d like to see about help to get us some funding into the project, or some kind of programming set up through the schools through which we can start having these conversations. I think it’s awesome to bring in students. Who are the other people we’re not thinking about, though? Maybe the homeless people who’re living [on the Midtown Campus] during COVID. There’s so much history there.

A LITTLE LESS LONE

Ah, to be Young SITE Santa Fe’s Young Curators kick off new exhibit

Don’t get mad that we’ve got SITE Santa Fe on the Picks page twice—but there’s a high bar to accessing the fine art world; there’s a high bar like woah. It’s the kind of stark reality that just plain deters those who might otherwise create unbelievable work, and it’s the kind of thing that disproportionately affects youths. At SITE Santa Fe, however, the kids get encouraged, and a new show at the internationally renowned institution puts some of those very kids on display. Check out Everything is Beautiful this week, an exhibit from the Young Curators program.

At its simplest, the long-running initiative teaches kids how to operate in the arts world while also delving into deeper ideas surrounding art making itself. You might even be surprised by how many local faves have been churned out or otherwise affected by the program.

At its upcoming show, the current Young Curators cohort of 12- to 18-yearold students first identified passions,

target audiences and what makes for compelling art. Then, working collaboratively all the way through, the group eventually nailed down an intriguing topic: transformation through discomfort.

In this instance, that concept is split into works about climate change and the uncanny valley (boiled down, when lifelike robots or AI freak living humans out). These ideas overlap in Everything is Beautiful across pieces from 15 young artists in mediums like clothing, sculpture, altered found pieces and more. Everything, in fact, was created from otherwise discarded materials. This one might get uncomfortable, but that’s a good thing.

That’s how we grow, that’s how we learn.

EVENT MON/31 CALLING ALL QUEERS While many a borderline ’phobe has often wondered, nonplussed, why our queer siblings would need specific sites set aside just for them, we think it’s quite obvious: Straight-ness being considered the default means of existence is an absolute curse, and safe spaces where people who face the worst of society can mingle, grab a drink and feel safe and accepted are invaluable. And though the gay bar concept in any official capacity long ago left Santa Fe behind, a night dedicated to our queer residents can help soften some of that blow. In this instance, it’s at La Reina within the El Rey Court, and it goes down every Monday night. It’s not a solution to all the world’s problems, but it’s something. Marietta Patricia Leis isn’t one to slow down. After decades pursuing the arts from performances to paintings, she’s still showing in galleries—pandemic-bedamned—at 83 years old. Leis’ newest exhibition Sense Memories at the Center for Contemporary Arts (1050 Old Pecos Trail, 11am-4pm, Fri-Sun. $10) is just as it sounds; a show that takes you as a viewer both into her own senses, but also into your own. Maybe that’s a view of the natural world, or something far more personal. This is where nostalgia and the earth’s physicality intersect. With a play on light and shadow, art becomes something beyond a frame and spills into our own senses. A longtime fan of minimalism, one of Leis’ major goals is to evoke emotion from simplistic elements. SFR spoke with with Leis about her showcase, the things that inspire her and how a grandmother gardening can become a catalyst for decades’ worth of creation. (Riley Gardner) Can you give us a little background on your career?

You might call me a ‘lifetime artist.’

The arts have been the primary focus of my life since I was a child growing up in New Jersey. Like many artists, my career’s gone down a long and circuitous road. I was always painting whenever I could. I studied and performed as a dancer at 14 and then moved to New York City when I was 17 to continue with my dance studies.

I studied the Stanislavski Method of acting with Lee Strasberg. Between classes and gigs as a dancer, actor and model, I continued to paint and began to show my work in the East Village.

In 1962, I moved to Los Angeles for my acting career and played minor roles in film as I continued to paint whenever I had a chance.

Visual art eventually became my primary creative expression, which led me to New Mexico and an MFA

from the University of New Mexico.

Extensive travel has really influenced my interests, specifically my interest in the planet, its sustainability and the inter-connectivity of everything in it. I’ve been fortunate in having been given numerous artist residencies throughout the world too, which have really inspired my work’s sense of place.

With the name Sense Memories, there’s an element of human sensation involved with the work beyond mere sight. Why go for this route rather than a more traditional one?

My grandmother was an Italian woman who responded to life in very visceral ways: gardening, cooking, appreciating beauty. [My use of] color recalls being with her in her gardens and eliciting the emotions of love that I feel for her. When I smell olive oil and garlic, the sense of her and her home is vivid. These are examples of ‘sense memories.’

Actors and psychologists use sense memories to stimulate memories and the emotions behind them. One of my intentions in my art is to engage the viewer, to invite them to participate and connect with the work, perhaps recalling their own memories, sense of place and feelings.

Light and shadow are notoriously difficult to work with, for obvious reasons. With that in mind, what are unique aspects of working with those elements that you can’t get from other elements?

They extend the art. Shadows and light can be seen as halos, and that is really magical to me. With installations consisting of several pieces, the shadows bridge these individual pieces.

Sometimes they can make the work larger than the work itself. Plus, when I was a kid, I loved the Robert Louis Stevenson poem My Shadow, which reads ‘I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me...’

My reductive art strives to be beautiful, to seduce people to think about larger and underlying issues.

When I extend my art off the wall, I’m attempting to meet the viewer where they are. These resulting shadows are a way to reach out and invite the viewer into conversation with the work [and this is] usually is a unique connection. Sometimes I use mediums that reflect light—glossy mediums and surfaces that can be burnished, metal leaf and others. We respond to light because we need light. It completes the darkness.

Once More, With Feeling Alberto Zalma works through challenging emotions with new piece based on the day the obelisk came down

ainter Alberto Zalma just so happened to come across the Indigenous Peoples Day protest on the Plaza that resulted in the felling of the obelisk in October 2020. He’d just returned from a family trip to the Midwest to visit his wife’s family where they’d also visited the George Floyd Global Memorial in Minneapolis with their young daughters.

“I didn’t really go down to the Plaza because I’d heard about it, I was just driving by,” Zalma tells SFR. “I had my kids with me, and they were freaked out. [At the Floyd memorial], it was still during the early days of the pandemic, and my one daughter just kind of flipped out and was asking me, ‘What’s wrong with the world?’ so coming from that to seeing the Plaza, she...was terrified. She kept asking what was going to happen next.”

By the time Zalma dropped his daughters off and returned to the Plaza, city police commanders had told officers to stand down, and activists were attempting to topple a second section of the obelisk. Zalma knew he’d need to do something with what he was seeing, he just didn’t know what yet.

“It was really intense,” he says. “On one hand, I understand why people wanted to rip

it down. I understand the feeling they got from looking at that monument, their frustration in asking for its removal I don’t know how many times—and nothing happened. At the same time, it didn’t feel good. It felt like somebody coming into your backyard and destroying something. I can’t say this is my property or my land, but that’s just what it felt like; I was literally born a block away at what is now the Drury hotel, and that thing has been a part of my life for my entire life.

It was a little weird.”

When the dust settled and Zalma left the Plaza, he knew he’d have to channel those feelings into something artful, but his conflicting emotions altered his usual process.

Usually, Zalma has some idea of what he’s going to paint and how he’s going to go about it; not so this time.

Even those in Santa Fe who don’t know Zalma by name surely know his work. It’s mostly skeletons in an almost cartoony fashion (think Fleischer meets Posada), and he’s done everything from Guadalupe to Trump in his signature style. For this piece, however, Zalma wanted to go larger and to create something more ethereal than a strict recreation of what he saw.

What resulted is “The New Revolt,” one of Zalma’s larger works at 4 by 4 feet and a reminder that perspective can be everything. Again, Zalma is not against the toppling of the obelisk, but as a creator with a mixed background including Spanish, Native and Mediterranean blood, he wasn’t sure what part of himself would inform his new work. As such, it’s a packed crowd scene populated with his skeletons. Some represent people he knows, others, more loose concepts or puro New Mexico groups like the Matachines or the Penitentes.

Trump makes an appearance in the crowd, as does Zozobra himself. The longer one observes, too, the more seems almost out of place. Take, for example, the Palace of the Governors, on which the famous Hispano family crests hang during Fiestas. That’s not an October event, but Zalma included them anyway, perhaps as a subtle nod to the colonial nature of Santa Fe’s past, or even just as a reminder that we’re a multicultural city.

All in all, he says, the piece took him over a year to complete.

“The different emotions that went through me just looking at it, they weren’t because of that day, they were because of that whole feeling of uneasiness that went through me—like there’s been uneasiness in this town since the beginning,” he tells SFR. “It can be hard for me, because where do I fit in? Where’s my voice? With my background, there’s no way for me to be on any one side of the issue, and sometimes I just feel like I agree with everybody.”

“When I hear the Natives talk,” he continues, “about how it made them feel, how it was a monument to oppression and genocide? I understand. We all know the history of this whole town, that it was a bloodbath, but this was my interpretation of Santa Fe when it gets together.”

Take that how you wilt, it seems, and the piece still hangs in Zalma’s Alberto Zalma Gallery on Guadalupe Street with a price tag of $10,013 (in honor of its Oct. 13 completion).

He’d like to sell the piece, of course, and he’d also like to see it hang in a museum, at least for a little while.

The latter, he thinks, would be the more community-minded. See, “The New Revolt” is the kind of painting that will say many different things to many different kinds of people. At its core, it doesn’t take sides, but it does reflect whatever emotions the viewer wants to put into it—good, bad, ugly. Like Zalma says, it’s easy to have conflicted feelings. Is it good that the obelisk fell? Probably so, and it will hopefully lead to a time of healing. Is it also normal for longtime Santa Feans to feel all sorts of ways about it? No question.

A Feast for the Senses Liu Liu Liu’s Asian fusion delights make for the best new culinary experience in Santa Fe KILEY LARSEN @kilarzleesen

A

ny Angeleno knows that some of the most memorable and extraordinary dining experiences in Los Angeles often happen in nondescript strip malls. At Liu Liu Liu (1722 St. Michael’s Drive, Suite F, (505) 428-0589), owners Cameron Markham and Elizabeth Blankstein are counting on Santa Feans to embrace the same mindset.

Markham and Blankstein’s creation might have only opened in an unassuming spot next to ABC Drivers Ed in the Food King parking lot on St. Michael’s Drive last summer, but the kitchen serves up a delectable combination of Taiwanese, New Mexican, French and Californian cuisines that can confidently take on any of Santa Fe’s downtown staples. While that’s not their intent, as Markham tells me, noting that, “we aren’t here to compete with the classics that are amazing at what they do,” his new 10-table spot is a most welcome addition to the local high-end dining scene.

Markham is a fifth-generation New Mexican, and Blankstein grew up in Taiwan before her family relocated to Los Angeles. Both spent their careers working for some of the most notable Michelin star chefs in LA, and the two met at Salt Air in Venice’s trendy Abbot Kinney district (that restaurant, sadly, closed in 2019). After working other industry jobs throughout Southern California, they came together and were on their way to getting married when COVID changed everything. Instead

of a lavish ceremony, Markham and Blankstein put their wedding cash toward a return to New Mexico—and opening Liu Liu Liu. After proceeding through the mood-setting black drapes covering the storefront, Edgar, the manager, warmly greets my wife and me while acting as our server for the evening. Markham and Blankstein want to celebrate their staff by including them while developing recipes, and Edgar, from El Salvador, used his spice knowledge to help with the goat entree ($66). An Indigenous team member also inspired sopaipillas served alongside chicken liver mousse and taro honey ($18).

Both Markham and Blankstein have roots as sommeliers, but instead of starting with the wine list, Liu Liu Liu offers multiple water options.

While mineral water is standard in Europe, having different choices is a reasonably new idea in American dining, thanks to infamous water sommelier Martin Riese, with whom Markham trained to hone the menu. We select Saint Geron ($18), a French sparkling water that offers middle-of-the-road mineral content.

As far as wine, Markham and Blankstein’s expertise is on full display, with the rotating menu laid out so even the most novice drinker can find something while those looking for more complex vintages might discover their new favorite label. We start with a velvety 2015 LAN Rioja ($15/ glass) from Spain, before touring to the north Italian border with a 2019 Manni Nossing Müller Thurgau ($16/glass) and, my personal favorite, a refreshing verdicchio by La Marca Di San Michele ($16/glass).

Additionally, Liu Liu Liu purchases all of its produce from the Santa Fe Farmers Market, and the freshness is on full display with the black hummus ($14), which skirts the traditional Mediterranean style for a somehow sweeter and more savory take. Accompanied by in-season vegetables including kohlrabi, calabash, heirloom Spanish black radish, Thai eggplant and Indian bitter melons then dashed with salt and lemon juice, it works well in contrast with a dish featuring satisfyingly crisp Persian cucumbers ($12) served with yellow squash, tossed in garlic, sesame oil and, one

of Blankstein’s favorites, Gochujang, a spicy chili paste that gives the dish its well-placed kick. The burrata ($25) is served on a bed of charred mesquite radicchio, rare yellow dragon fruit and the brightest kumquats I’ve tasted outside of Santa Barbara.

What heaven is this?

While the menu is a vast fusion of what inspires Markham and Blankstein, the common theme is Taipei’s night markets, which Blankstein recalls with a sparkle in her eye. For starters, we order the Bean Curd ($13), a traditional offering from the island’s street scene. Accompanied by carrots, cucumber, charred peanuts and topped with cilantro, the noodles are tossed in sesame oil and are refreshingly cool with excellent bounce.

Other market staples include popcorn chicken painted with fried Thai basil and Périgord black truffle ($42), and a delicious artichoke appetizer which Blankstein braises in traditional LuWei broth served with carrot and Korean radish ($18). There’s the Beef Soup ($30), a traditional family recipe that Blankstein learned from her mother, and that comes in a trough-sized bowl big enough to share with a few friends, and swordfish ($40) served on a chayote mash with beet then topped with a creamy pernod velouté and dehydrated lily flower.

The icing on the cake comes when Blankstein completes the dish with absinthe essence, which breathes new life into the swordfish.

For vegetarians, the trip is worth it alone for silky mapo tofu ($24), served with green beans and a radiantly floral green Sichuan sauce that explodes on the tongue while numbing the pallet. If there can be a red and green chile war in New Mexico, the same applies to Sichuan, and I am firmly on Team Green after years of only trying reds.

Liu Liu Liu’s approach, Markham says, is to be “restrained and delicate, yet approachable,” and its owners have built a trendy black and gold atmosphere to ply their modern take on Taiwanese food in a way that never feels intimidating. Oh, and if you’re a fan, look out for Blood Sausage, their new restaurant and beer garden in Albuquerque—which is slated to have an ’80s horror theme— opening sometime in March.

Stop-Zemila Review Ukraine is very cold, and the vibes are...well, they’re also chilly

It’s tough to be a Ukranian teenager these days, what with all the who-likes-who, what-does-thefuture-hold questions, plus that growing will-mycountry-exist-in-a-few weeks thing. At a time when Ukraine’s sovereignty is on shaky ground, it feels almost counterproductive to focus on the most typical problems teenagers face, but Stop-Zemila from writer/director Kateryna Gornostai dares to suggest otherwise, providing a film so familiar yet unexpectedly mesmerizing.

Masha (Maria Fedorchenko) is a loner who is isolated from her social peers. She holds intense loyalty for her two best friends, punk-rocker Senia (Arsenii Markov) and quiet depressive Yana (Yana Bratiychuk). Meanwhile, Masha’s crush Sasha (Oleksandr Ivanov) navigates a closed-off relationship with his mother that keeps him dependent on friends for expression.

What makes Stop-Zemila unique is its relation to current events. Instability hovers over youthful

Old Oxford pals Hugh (George MacKay of 1917) and Paul (Jannis Niewöhner, Cortex) have long been separated due to their politics—one finds solace in Neville Chamberlain’s (Jeremy Irons) appeasement strategy and the other in the the nationalism of Nazi Germany. They aren’t on speaking terms, but for reasons unknown Paul has joined the resistance to Hitler (Ulrich Matthes in one of the worst portrayals of Hitler put to screen). MI6 requests Hugh meet with Paul as a contact, but Paul’s got his own plans. As expected, they go through run-of-themill Nazi spy scares set during the 1938 Munich Conference.

Both Hugh and Paul are intolerably bad spies.

Horror-movie-lead-running-right-into-the-murderer bad. Each looks panicked anytime they do anything, even when they walk, and they’re overheard far too often to help the fates of their respective nations—a set of squirrel spies on the job would yield better results, making emotional beats in Munich akin to a roller coaster. Characters scream, for example, seemingly due to director Christian Schwochow’s fear the audience might get bored. It’s also a never-ending collection of chaotic quick-cuts that try and fail to distract from the badly constructed screenplay from Ben Power and Robert Harris, who penned the book on which it is based.

A pro-Chamberlain film isn’t on anyone’s bucket list, is it? Munich portrays him as the hidden genius whose actions allowed the UK to triumph in WWII. Uh, OK. Brave opinions aside, we’re stretched between a bargain bin knockoff of Darkest Hour, plus a bad try at Tarantino, plus astonishing homoerotic tension. Make that movie next time, geez!

vices, even if the kids don’t talk about it, and Senia is a refugee from Eastern Ukraine, where the proxy wars pushed him out. The kids go to military training as part of their high school curriculum (military conscription is mandatory for men in Ukraine).

They train with guns and the piano and learn battlefield medicine, but also the science behind love.

Irony is the point: They are desperate for a sense of permanency in this faux-stable world—something director Gornostai is certainly familiar with given her background documenting Ukraine’s political turmoil nearly a decade ago in Euromaidan. Rough Cut. You’ll still find chinks in the armor among her deep commitment. Stop-Zemila lacks needed clarity

Even so, Munich is semi-enjoyable in the way one might still enjoy monster-smash movies. It’s a stupid bad-spy movie with no restraint where it needs it and all the restraint where it doesn’t. Even still, some sequences are genuinely tense, the actors are all good looking and it’s a period piece fan’s delight. Just don’t try to dig deep. (RG) Netflix, NR, 130 min

Yusuki’s (Hidetoshi Nishijima) only certainty comes from his car, an aging red Saab. The car becomes something of a totem for his autonomy, but as life’s trials strike him down, Yusuki dives into a directing job in a Hiroshima theater. It’s not the picturesque escape he envisioned—he’s faced with a lead actor (Masaki Okada) whose self-destructive nature ripped apart Yusuki’s personal life years before. Even more upsetting is his gradual vision loss, resulting in the young Misaki (Tôko Miura) taking the helm of his Saab as his personal driver, altering Yusuki’s sense of control. In short, this is one sad dude.

Based on the short story of the same name by Wind Up Bird Chronicles author Haruki Murakami, Drive My Car is a difficult piece to grasp in one sitting.

It’s a slow ride at nearly three hours, exceedingly quiet and overwhelmingly lonesome. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi turns the concept of an urban night drive into something of a holy hour, the time when confessions burst out, revelations are exposed and the gradual understanding of living occurs in a place that lingers between mysticism and reality.

What results is a curious take on grief. Not the fear of death, really, but a fear of self and how we react to the sudden evils of which we’re capable.

and charm and relies too heavily on montage and dreamscape imagery. By its conclusion, it might feel pointless, but cinema’s great gift is to see life in far away places not as a gawking tourist, but more quietly and accurately. Gornostai finds brilliance within young Ukranian society, but also the looming threat that it could all be snatched away from them.

Drive My Car, then, is a film of slow surprises, dripping with minute reveals scene-by-scene. Juicy drama unfolds, mind you, but also a remarkable humanism we rarely see in Western cinema these days. One could imagine a less reserved filmmaker needing to push platitudes and proverbs and otherwise underestimating their audience. Hamaguchi instead crafts a world that reflects a universal human experience and the secret fear most dread: loss of control.

By understanding entirely where it’s aiming from the get-go, Drive My Car proves its plaudits and accolades well earned. Imagine a cinematic landscape where filmmakers felt brave enough to prove they feel the darkness, too, even if it manifests less mythologically than it does in the more bombastic movie fare of today. In a time when we’re force-fed tales of heroic inter-galactic victories over catchall, one-dimensional enemies, it can be a surprise when effective storytelling doesn’t need to lean on something loud and fantastical. You can be the darkness in your own story. You can win small victories.

+ THE ACTING WORKS - PRO-MERITOCRACY GARBAGE; A CONCEPTUAL MESS

JR (Tye Sheridan/Daniel Ranieri) wants to be a writer. He wants to write because he’s, y’know—special.

You won’t see him writing much or discover a thing about his passions, but remember: He’s special. The people who make up JR’s crowded home love and encourage him, Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck) in particular, who becomes a guiding light in opposition to JR’s deadbeat father (Max Martini). Still, our hero wonders if he has what it takes to be a writer, plus

there’s some girl drama. There you go—that’s The Tender Bar from director George Clooney (yes, that George Clooney), a film with a decidedly un-clever title which portrays itself as a sprinkler spouting truth when it’s really as murky as polluted lake water.

You’ll probably wonder why you’re watching JR at all, especially as the writer-riddled-with-self-doubt story has been told ten gazillion times in film. Most kids are told they’re special by their families, what’s unique about this one? You won’t ever find out, save for something or other about daddy issues, but you will get a ’70s/’80s nostalgia-fueled tale with the weakest kinds of evocation, from then-ubiquitous pop tunes and a sepia tone filter, as if that’s supposed to mean anything. C’mon, Clooney.

Amazon Prime’s new film is a tonal trainwreck, its focus as unsteady as the camcorder-like cinematography. Find here an inexplicable abundance of snap-zooms, as if Clooney had a fever dream and thought he might be making an action flick. But then, Clooney’s directorial history is littered with one stumble after another (remember The Midnight Sky? Suburbicon? Sheesh). At least those stumbles are a source of consistency, but maybe we can all collectively agree that, moving forward, the majority of memoirs can stay within pages rather than digital frames?

The Tender Bar, most curiously, promotes the notion that real America is the folks at the bars who passively watch the world and its people go by. They are content with their lot and recognize brilliance, however; they give grandfatherly advice to the special smarties like JR. Uh, OK. Such weird working class romanticism hovers over this story, all while encouraging the not-so-special normies to be cool with what they have. Clooney, one the highest paid Hollywood actors, maybe isn’t one to tell us about working class truths, though.(RG) Amazon Prime, R, 104 min.
