anta Fe, ever mindful of its charm and quaint New Mexico-ness, has a problem with sidewalks.

The narrow, brick paths, wrinkled by time, lend an authenticity to the downtown area, but prove impassable for wheeled users: parents with strollers, delivery people pushing dollies and those using wheelchairs.

The persistent issue of inaccessible public spaces, obvious to those who rely on assistive devices to navigate Santa Fe, has long plagued the city, explains Robin Garrison, an advocate with the nonprofit Disability Rights New Mexico.

“We all function within what our reality is and I think that if you don’t have a disability, you’re really just not truly aware of how much accessibility can impact someone,” says Garrison, adding that Santa Fe’s inaccessibility issues are like those around the nation.

But in the City Different, old buildings and roadways, historical protections and vague exemptions to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) have stymied progress.

It’s a well-known problem—the city sought to map trouble spots in 2016 and found plenty. However, an ongoing squabble between businesses and local government over who’s on the hook for fixing them continues.

Some have suggested using part of the recent influx of $15 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to provide a salve, though the Public Works Department hasn’t yet decided whether ADA compliance fits within its framework for the funds.

to a visual impairment. While she has no recollection of any recent legal claims against the City of Santa Fe for ADA violations, Garrison says the evidence is everywhere, from a lack of curb cuts to narrow paths often obstructed by light poles or fire hydrants.

Anne Marsh knows the feeling.

On a recent day, she wanted to practice using her wheelchair on the streets to feel more comfortable navigating the area around the Plaza. The device, which she recently acquired, “is a two-wheel, self-balancing wheelchair that you control using

the seat as a joystick,” she tells SFR. Living with multiple sclerosis is “like having a bad iPhone battery,” says Marsh.

She explains that a 15-minute walk can leave her drained, and using a wheelchair enables her to have a normal outing in Santa Fe. On a recent trip downtown, Marsh and her husband, Hal Malchow, first tried to go down Canyon Road, but soon had to turn back because light poles in the middle of the sidewalk blocked her path.

Next, they tried to head back toward the Plaza on East Palace Avenue, but the side-

walk was still difficult to navigate. When Marsh came across a steep curb cut that led into a parking meter, she swerved to avoid it, hitting a coyote fence and causing her wheelchair to tip over.

“Luckily I didn’t hit my head, I just got bruised up,” Marsh tells SFR. Kaity Ellis, who works with Garrison as an advocate with the disability rights organization, has experienced similar challenges.

“I would just hope that our society is more inclusive, especially visiting Santa Fe,” Ellis tells SFR. “That is our state capital.

That is where all the action happens.” But as Ellis has experienced, most people think of the ADA as an “afterthought” instead of a priority.

That negligence is muddied by a convoluted game of finger pointing.

Gary Housepian, CEO of the disability rights group, explains: “There’s a dispute as to who’s responsible for this. That is, the businesses are saying it’s the city’s responsibility, and the city is saying it’s the businesses’ responsibility. Bottom line is there’s still issues there and no one’s getting it resolved.”

Tom Graham, Santa Fe’s ADA coordinator, explains that in most cities people with disabilities run into barriers, either accessing buildings or navigating public rights-ofway. But “with our city being so old, it does compound that a little bit more.”

City officials are well aware of the accessibility issues.

In 2016, they contracted the KFH Group to identify and map various barriers to accessing city-owned buildings, parks and public rights-of-way. Just glancing at the map, it’s easy to see where a majority of the most concerning issues exist based on the cluster of red dots.

“The majority of priority areas are surrounding downtown and are also located along the City’s major transportation corridors; including Cerrillos Road, St. Francis Drive, and St. Michael’s Drive,” reads the city’s ADA transition plan, which identifies modifications needed—initially drafted in 1992 and updated in 2017.

While these issues have existed for decades, there remain significant barriers just outside the city’s most iconic spaces.

Marsh explains that the Plaza itself is accessible to those who use wheelchairs, but “as soon as you get off the Plaza and try to go down Galisteo [Street] or try to go to the Water Street parking lot…the sidewalks are so narrow and there’s no curb cuts, you can’t do it.”

Curbs, gutters and sidewalks in front of private property fall to the owner to maintain and make accessible, Graham says, citing the city code.

“With the repairs comes the need for budget and funds to do that, otherwise it’s [an undue burden] by ADA standards,” says Graham.

By “undue burden,” he means that private entities can avoid meeting accessibility requirements under the ADA if the nature and cost of an accommodation is beyond the means of a business.

“There is no hard set definition of what undue financial or administrative hardship means,” says Garrison, adding that it depends on a business’ assets and how much the modification would cost, which means that exemptions are decided on a case-bycase basis.

“The ADA has been wonderful and has made some incredible changes for people, but there’s so many little loopholes in it,” Garrison tells SFR. One of those exemptions applies to many Santa Fe properties:

Buildings built prior to 1990, per the ADA, are grandfathered in and don’t require accessibility modifications.

Public spaces that lie outside of the purview of property owners are the city’s responsibility, which comes with limitations.

Accessibility improvements are included in any construction and repair projects, Graham says. But in the case of other identified barriers, those that aren’t the target of new construction, funding must be secured.

That’s where the American Rescue Plan Act money could come in. City Council’s appropriation of those funds will take place in January.

The area where Marsh fell due to the sidewalk’s inaccessible condition meets the exit driveway of La Posada Hotel on East Palace Avenue. When Marsh approached the hotel about the sidewalk after the incident, management told her it was the city’s problem, she says.

Neither La Posada or the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce responded to multiple requests to comment on access .

The Mayor’s Committee on Disability, an appointed group that works to remove barriers in the city, has included sidewalk repair and improvements among its 2019 and 2020 priorities. Graham, the committee’s staff liaison, explains the pandemic caused a lapse in the group’s work, but in recent months it has resumed advocating for Santa Feans with disabilities.

One recent example of the advocacy was the September adoption of an ordinance that requires “places of public accommodation,” which includes bars and restaurants, to display closed captions for anyone to read while watching television.

Collaboration between local government, private businesses and advocates is needed to pursue solutions, says Garrison.

en and Eli Goodman, the father and son behind local company Best Daze, stand in a forest of flowering cannabis, dwarfed by the greenery that stretches over 7 feet high. In between chatting about the warehouse yield surrounding them, they hug one of the potted plants, laughing, and Eli smells some of the bud he’s rubbed on his fingers.

Their passion for the industry and the plant itself is evident, and it’s shared by all of their 53 employees, most of whom are medical cannabis patients themselves, says the younger Goodman, who’s the chief operating officer.

“Everybody growing the medicine, everybody manufacturing and producing, everybody dispensing has a real belief in the importance of what’s taking place and knows that they’re helping people have a better life and feel relieved,” he tells SFR. Best Daze opened in February 2018 and is expanding as the forthcoming recreational market ramps up, with a new shop on Mercer Street that’s expected to open later this month. The company, which is one of 34 legacy producers that carried over from the medical program and can begin sales to all adults in April, has two other locations in Eldorado and Española.

Anticipating long lines when adult-use sales begin, the Goodmans say their focus will be on protecting access for the patients who have been with them from the beginning.

“They have to be our priority for two reasons,” the elder Goodman says. “One is because we have

to assume they really need it for medical reasons, health reasons. But they’re also the people who have supported us all these years.

They’re our loyal customers. We’ve gotta take care of our folks.”

Best Daze is one of the only dispensaries on the Southside, and its co-founder was one of the first people in New Mexico to get approval to grow cannabis for medical patients.

The family- and worker-oriented company stands out among more than a dozen other options in Santa Fe. Most of the city’s dispensaries line Cerrillos Road or are clustered on the north side, near downtown. There are a few others on the Southside, mostly on the outskirts: Ultra Health, High Desert Relief and Keyway Marketplace, formerly Shift New Mexico.

But Best Daze is the only cannabis retailer on Airport Road.

Born-and-raised Southsider Andrea Lozano got her start budtending at Fruit of the Earth Organics a few years ago and eventually worked her way up to assistant manager. In 2020, she made the move to Best Daze’s Airport shop as a manager and budtender.

In just a few short years, the company has become a fixture in the community, she says.

“It’s like the neighborhood dispensary,” Lozano tells SFR. “Everyone goes to it.

Everyone. I’ll go to smoke with my cousins down the road and there’s a Best Daze bag.”

Best Daze, which grows organic cannabis, also has a warehouse and a kitchen in the area, where workers prepare edibles, drinks and more.

The dispensary’s location on the Southside—where residents have less access to many services and amenities, from grocery stores to parks—didn’t happen by chance.

The Goodmans say the location was of critical importance, in part because it ties into one of Len’s reasons for getting into the business over a decade ago: helping low-income people get their medicine.

“Working people have a higher percentage of pain from work-related accidents and injuries and lack of safety equipment,” he tells SFR. “We realized that this whole medical cannabis business that we had started was catering to a demographic, basically, of poor people in pain…Besides the Southside being underserved from a business perspective, it was a demographic that we had always tried to appeal to.”

Originally from New York, the elder Goodman arrived in New Mexico in 1967 as one of the original members of the New Buffalo commune in Arroyo Hondo.

After settling in Santa Fe in 1971, drawn in by the small town’s climate, mountains and culture, he and his then-wife Roberta started a company called Arius Tile, producing handcrafted tile and murals.

That company eventually dwindled and

Goodman started looking for another business opportunity when he came across an SFR story about New Mexico’s budding medical cannabis program, which launched in 2007 after legislative approval and a signature from then-Gov. Bill Richardson.

“I was sitting on the pot, no pun intended, reading the Santa Fe Reporter, and I read that they’d finished the rules and given out a producer license and you could apply for more,”

he says. “I ran some numbers and spent a couple weeks trying to see whether I thought it would be viable for another small business, and I decided it was.

I didn’t expect it would be very large, but expected it’d be fun. It would be political action, organic farming, it would be something that would help people medically, not just another silly object.”

Goodman lived in Pittsburgh from high school through graduate school. There, he participated in civil rights, anti-nuclear and anti-Vietnam War activism. He sees his decision to get into the cannabis industry as an extension of those roots.

“The drug war was horrendous and although that hadn’t been one of our engagements in the ’60s, and I had been out of that activism for a long time, this was a way to get back into it, trying to reverse the social policy and the harm the War on Drugs had done,” he says.

He received a medical cannabis license in 2009, when there were, he says, less than a thousand patients in the state, compared to 127,743 active patients now, according to the latest data from the state Department of Health. He and his then-wife and partner Susan founded New MexiCann Natural Medicine.

The landscape was starkly different back then.

For example: Producers were restricted to 95 plants, so there were regular shortages that were also driven, in part, by the limited

number of licenses the state had granted at that time.

New MexiCann harvested every two weeks, made product announcements on Sunday and was sold out by Monday.

Retail stores also weren’t permitted, so patients had to buy their medicine in advance online or over the phone and producers had to deliver it.

“We didn’t do this, but they [other producers] were telling people they would meet everybody in Santa Fe, let’s say, 10 o’clock Wednesday morning in front of Albertsons,” Len Goodman says. “So you’d have this whole crowd of people waiting to do their drug deal, right? It was just crazy. It was a terrible way to service patients.”

Rather than making deliveries in parking lots, he says the company asked the health department if it could operate out of an office and allow patients to pick up their advance orders at their convenience, which the department allowed.

Goodman left New MexiCann in 2015 after he and his wife divorced. Eli Goodman, who’d moved back from Los Angeles three years prior and was running sales and retail operations for the company, joined his father.

“The easiest way to separate two families who are enmeshed in a very difficult family dynamic within the business was to sell my share to the other family, who at the time had been my wife,” he says.

“They listen to you, they’re not so on you about how you dress,” Lozano says. “They just want you to come to work and have a good attitude and be honest and good to the patients. That’s all they really care about, and it’s really all that matters, honestly.”

Lozano says Best Daze pays its employees well, particularly compared to some other cannabis companies, and offers a 50% discount on products.

“Virtually everyone who works for us, if not everyone, is a medical cannabis patient,” the younger Goodman says. “They have a deep relationship with it and if they didn’t work for us, I don’t think there’d be any less cannabis in their life, there’d just be a lot more money spent on it. So it helps, and patients talking to patients is productive.”

Over the past year, Lozano has managed eight people at the Airport Road store, and is hoping to have a staff of the same size at

headquarters on San Mateo Lane in October 2020 that severely injured two workers, the second such serious accident at the operation.

The same year the Goodmans left New MexiCann, the state health department opened the door to receive more medical license applications, which had been closed for several years, and the father and son got another license.

Enter Best Daze.

Despite success in the three years since opening on the Southside, starting over had its challenges, including finding grow, manufacturing and store locations and developing a new name and logo.

But in their new venture, the Goodmans have found loyal customers and employees, including Lozano, the budtender and manager.

The 28-year-old started using cannabis medicinally years ago to aid in her recovery from an eating disorder.

“I suffered from bulimia for a very long time, so my therapist actually recommended it,” she says. “I’d been smoking pot my whole life but I’d never really done edibles. That really changed my whole life. I needed it. It helped me eat, get an appetite and digest food without it being so painful.”

She left her job as a casino dealer and started budtending shortly after, first at Fruit of the Earth Organics, where she was working when the coronavirus pandemic began.

The switch to curbside service and interacting with impatient people waiting in line in their cars proved challenging, and Lozano was looking for a change.

She moved in August 2020 to Best Daze, which she says is a great place to work.

She says they work either 9- or 5-hour shifts, which she tries to disperse evenly so as to not overwhelm anyone.

That scheduling strategy seems to line up with the Goodmans’ perspective on work.

“Len and I both strongly believe that quality of life is what is important in work,” says Eli, who has also maintained an acting career over the past two decades and recently starred in a play written by his wife Kristin that opened at the Santa Fe Playhouse.

“Everybody has to work and earn a living and take care of their family, but everybody also has other things going on in their life. They have family needs that mean they have to be able to get time off.

“For me, being engaging and playful and light is important and I do my best in conversation with everybody just to talk to them and know what’s up with them, just to make sure that working with us is a positive part of their life and not something that’s dragging them down.”

For Lozano, the best part of the job, along with the work environment, is the relationships she’s built with patients.

“You get super close to these people,” she says. “They bring you Christmas gifts. They bring us food all the time. I love them. And they love us, too. You’re like their therapist for a lot of them. They spend time talking to you and you know that they don’t have other places to go.”

Those relationships can, in another way, be the hardest part of the job, she says.

Sitting in the lobby of the new shop on Mercer Street—yet to open to the public at the time of SFR’s visit—on a Saturday in December, she talks about a patient who recently died from cancer, a diagnosis Lozano says she sometimes found hard to believe was true because he was energetic and “brightened up the whole room.”

Budtenders help medical cannabis patients at Best Daze’s store on Airport Road.

in New Mexico, according to the health department.

“Once you get that obituary or just news, it’s awful,” Lozano says. “I’ve stood in the top offices at Airport so many times just crying.

It’s so hard.”

During a recent morning stop at the Airport Road store, Eli greets a pair of patients, who he knows by name, as a budtender helps them.

Going into the recreational market, patients will be prioritized, he says, adding that while not everyone is classified as a patient, in his view cannabis has medicinal value for all.

“I believe that everybody that uses cannabis does use it for medicinal reasons, regardless of how they’re categorized, whether or not they have a card,” he says. “It’s used at the very least for relaxation and often to ease pain and stress, so it’s medical no matter what to us, but we will put the patients in the program first all the way through.”

With recreational sales set to begin on April 1, the company hasn’t quite settled on the details, but ideas include patient-only lines and medical Mondays.

Other cannabis businesses that have talked with SFR are considering similar strategies.

Earlier this year, business owners and state regulators warned that there would be a supply shortage come April, although Regulation and Licensing Department Superintendent Linda Trujillo said last month that she doesn’t expect shortages to be an ongoing issue.

Best Daze has a large surplus built up, according to the Goodmans, who say they don’t anticipate running out of cannabis in 2022.

While the company plans to stay true to its roots, along with the Mercer expansion— which experienced some pandemic-driven setbacks—comes excitement and high hopes.

Construction took a year and a half to complete, in part because materials were held up, the elder Goodman says. The building used to be an auto glass repair center, so the renovation was significant.

Lozano says she had a major role in designing the new shop.

“I definitely chose it for a change,” she says. “He [Eli] was letting whoever was going to start up the store pretty much do the whole aesthetic of it and I was so down. He allowed me to choose the plants and the tables, where everything is going. There was so much freedom. This was like a whole new job.”

Customers at the Mercer store will be able to order through walk-up windows, some dedicated to patients, looking in on a vibrant space covered partly in orange paint.

The company chose a bright color to send a message that cannabis use isn’t something that needs to be hidden.

“It’s just an everyday part of life, people using cannabis, and there’s nothing illicit about it. That’s why there’s orange on the wall,” the younger Goodman says. “This is the same as, I suppose, a yogurt store. This is just something you do during the course of your day. ‘I got my bread, I got my milk, I got my weed and I’m going home.’”

Still, as a family business, it’s made it through some of the worst days with a little bit of PPP assistance and a commitment to high-quality takeout (seriously, you should see how excellently the takeout is wrapped).

Their other eatery, Café Sonder, however, wasn’t so lucky and closed in 2020, according to Garcia, who chalks the closure up to a rocky start and bad public health timing.

Still, he says, he can now focus entirely on Yamas, and with assistance from the whole family, including menu development from brother Nick Ratazos, a professional chef working in California, plus former

O

nce upon a time at a Greek Festival at the San Bernardino horse track (that’s in California), my mother instructed my brother to approach my very single lady’s man uncle as he was flirting with a woman and to loudly query, “Daddy? Can I have a hot dog? Mommy says I can have one!”

We watched from the shadows, laughing, lamb gyros in everyone’s hand.

Years later, my father, drunk on ouzo at my aunt’s wedding, stepped into the center of the circle dance, waved to the crowd, and burned that mother down. Grasping a dolma and a massive piece of baklava, I’d never seen him move so fluidly and freely.

I’d never been so glad about having just smoked weed in a parking lot.

What’s my point? I’m Greek as a sunkissed olive tree, and I’ve learned a thing or two about the food from my family over the years (mainly how not to cook lamb), and this is why you need to believe me when I say Yamas Greek Rotisserie (2411 Cerrillos Road, (505) 930-5921) is easily one of Santa Fe’s most excellent places to eat right now, and it’s not the kind of place to wipe out your bank account.

With that added focus, Yamas has become the type of local eatery loved by the puro Santa Fe set.

For this Greek Santa Fean, too, Garcia and company might be serving up the best Greek food I’ve had locally in ages. Just the other day, I sampled the falafel sandwich combo ($14.04), which comes with a small house salad and fries. Crispy around the outside edges and satisfyingly chewy inside, the combo of fresh tomato, lettuce and falafel was pitch-perfect, including the bang-up takeaway packaging. My companion tried the Mediterranean kale salad ($7.95-$12.90), one of Yamas’ staples according to Garcia, and spent days waxing about its freshness, crispness and overall taste. Even the following day, the leftovers somehow proved more flavorful and didn’t fall victim to the soggy sadness of day-old food.

“That falafel, for example, is something we worked really hard on,” Garcia tells me by phone some days later. “[My stepdad] grew up working with his father in the kitchen, and when we were designing the concept for the restaurant, we used what he had in mind from when he was growing up. The recipes are really things he grew up eating and things

he made for us when [my brother and I] were kids. Even the marinades, it’s the same thing.”

I’m reticent to use the term “authentic,” especially since Garcia says they’ve been open to tweaking recipes based on diner input, but someplace between the feta on my salad and the sauce in my sandwich, I was transported back to the Greek festivals of my youth in taste and mood. At the very least, the foundation of everything on the Yamas menu is firmly planted in the motherland.

Or, to put it another way, you can practically taste the combined will of the family in the food. Yamas is, after all, both the continuation of the Greeker parts of Garcia’s extended family and a restaurant willing to continually refine its offerings. It’s also a part of a subtle nationwide movement that finds restaurants opening up in residential neighborhoods rather than in flooded commercial zones.

Take, for example, Rowley Farmhouse Ales—the place slaps hard and lives in the heart of a regular old Midtown Santa Fe neighborhood; Yamas has a similar thing going inside the space that once housed Lamplighter Liquors which, according to Garcia, was very much by design.

“I just realized there was this massive neighborhood back behind us, and those people are looking for places to eat, too. I mean, I live over there, too,” he tells SFR. “I feel like that’s just the way things are going, I mean, that’s more forward-thinking than downtown where you have to pay an initial cost to go to a restaurant. I love those restaurants, nothing against them, but you have to pay for that parking meter, and I even remember working downtown and having to pay $12 a day just to go to work.”

For now, Garcia adds, he’s happy to simply try and offer the best service he can.

“We like to say service is the job, hospitality is the extra steps,” he says. “We want people to know we care about the experience, but we’ve also had a lot of support. If it weren’t for the community around us, we wouldn’t still be around.”

Being the Ricardos Review Aaron Sorkin read a book and really wants us to know

Does everything for which writer/bad director Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) lives fit well enough into a behind-the-scenes look at the cast of I Love Lucy? Give the man almost any American institution—the White House, cable news, Facebook— and he’ll find a way to bring it down to a reality check, reminding us along the way that the world is run by assholes. Who woulda known?

Lucille Ball (a dedicated but odd-looking performance from Nicole Kidman, who’s got some weird wide-eyed thing going on) and her husband Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) are the brilliant minds behind America’s most-watched sitcom. Things aren’t so idyllic under the surface, though. Wanna know why? Because they are assholes, says Sorkin.

Of course. Ball is accused of communist sympathies while Arnaz’s affairs are tabloid fodder. Everyone is sad and pissed off all the time.

Being the Ricardos never falters in its performances, despite its myriad stumbles in everything else it tries. Just how does a film about one of the

Some comics, it seems, exist for other comedians, and actor/writer Bob Einstein was one such performer.

Many know him as Marty Funkhouser from Larry David’s iconic HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, others from his long-running Super Dave Osborne stuntman parody that started sometime around the heyday of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and ran on talk shows all the way through his death in 2019. You might even remember Einstein as George Senior’s surrogate from the criminally under-appreciated Arrested Development, or, if you’re a certain age, as actor/writer Albert Brooks’ brother and a mainstay writer across comedy shows that produced future writer/performers like Steve Martin, Carl Reiner and other heavy hitters. However you know him (or are just realizing you know him), Einstein was a gifted funnyman with an enviable decades-long career, and a new HBO documentary from filmmaker Danny Gold digs into the career of the consummate comic for comics.

Whether through interviews with some of the biggest names in comedy—from the aforementioned David, Martin and Reiner, to Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, JB Smoove, Susie Essman, Jerry Seinfeld and more—or in footage from Einstein’s stints with the Smothers Brothers, Sonny and Cher, the short-lived cable program Bizarre or elsewhere, a picture emerges of a creator who some20

most beloved comic duos in media history wind up so humorless? Kidman and Bardem spew out all the factoids Sorkin got out of whatever biography he read, but they are still just masses of meat in a frame, like an AI bot telling you about its internet searches.

Everyone around Ball and Arnaz are bumbling morons, typical of Sorkin’s usual “great people” mindset. Ball builds her storyboards as if she’s diagnosing computer code or defusing a bomb; intense music flares—intense close-ups everywhere. Why on Earth should a movie about a 23-minute sitcom be so methodical and why did Sorkin employ a painfully pointless fake documentary framing device?

how became a straight man unto himself. As the legendary Super Dave, Einstein crafted an enduring bit that inspired an entire generation of physical comedy fans; though his inspiration on the hip-hop community is a welcome surprise.

Einstein’s bit, as it were, is that there wasn’t a bit—only deadpan seriousness with the slightest twinge of rage. As Reiner says in the film, all the best comics channel that bit of anger, but Einstein perfected its nuance.The Super Bob Einstein Movie unveils one of comedy’s worst-kept secrets, but lovingly teaches us why it continues to matter. Think of it like a crash course in craft for even the most seasoned comedy fans, a glimpse into the life of a guy who impacted just about anything that made us laugh over the last 50 years and a humble but important entry in the pantheon of jokes.

You’ll laugh and cry and wish you were a performer yourself, even as Einstein’s strained familial relationships are hinted at, but never fully explored.

At its core, however, Gold’s film seems a great excuse to find out what makes our favorite comics laugh. In that and so many other ways, Einstein became a legend. Like jokes? See this doc.

It hurts to watch, and whereas Sorkin’s last project, The Trial of the Chicago 7, went for something, anything—even if it was merely highlighting Sorkin’s skepticism of progressivism—and had a unity of vision, here that vision feels as aimless as a lumberjack swinging an axe in a field with nary a tree in sight.

down of cinema, the same-ness of superhero movies or by even just pointing out how No Way Home is as predictable as a film can get. But when the chips are down in director John Watts’ third installment of modern web-swingin’ quip-master’s story, it becomes a deeply satisfying bit of fan service enjoyable for its thrills and bazillion dollar CGI. When we join this particular universe’s SpiderMan (Tom Holland), he’s dealing with fallout of the last film wherein Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealed his Peter Parker secret identity through none other than unscrupulous “journalist” J. Jonah Jameson (played here by JK Simmons like he’s Alex Jones or something). In the aftermath, Peter and his pals MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) can’t get into college because of the controversy, and in an effort to undo his big reveal party, Pete visits Dr. Strange (Benedict “PingWing” Cumberbatch) about a spell that’ll make people forget.

The spell goes awry and starts pulling in Spider-Foes from other universes—you know, the villains from the original run of films plus those Andrew Garfield ones? Doctor Octopus and Electro? Sandman? Those guys? We shan’t spoil it any further, but we think you know what that means in terms of star power. Thus, main universe Spider-Man’s world crumbles around him. There are nefarious deeds afoot, dear reader—magical darkness? A must!

Watts and company get pretty big points for making a film that feels like a comic book issue of Spider-Man, and Holland actually hints

at depth this time out. But whereas this level of acting (which is still not, like, something on the same level as the greats of the medium) might have been nice in other installments, No Way Home is mostly a vehicle for introducing the multiverse, dropping closure bombs and giving longtime fans reason after reason to love the film despite themselves. Still, at this point in the Marvel cinema/TV canon, one could practically set their watch to the story beats.

Zendaya and Batalon bring much-needed levity to this heavier entry, and Cumberbatch’s “I’m a dick” thing works here. Too bad Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May isn’t on the screen more, and the same goes for the rogue’s gallery of villains who, at times, stumble over each other. Be advised, as well, that unless you’ve been following this stuff since Tobey Maguire first donned the tights, you could get lost. A film should answer its own questions rather than require us to be lore experts, though it’s almost impossible to escape the Marvel machine at this point.

And so it goes, predictably, but with enough pizazz and history to make it fun. You shan’t have trouble finding indies and art films, nay-sayers, and it’s blessedly enjoyable to get a summertime-type blockbuster at the tail end of a miserable year. Sometimes movies are simply about dumb excitement, and there’s nothing wrong with that, even if No Way Home feels like a lesser version of Into the Spider-Verse, which still slaps hard.
