The Reporter’s characterization of the city’s zoning verification and regulation process for the newly legalized recreational cannabis industry as obstructionist and unreasonably slow is deeply misleading and inaccurate in several respects. Counting the Incarcerated

W

hile nearly a third of New Mexico’s state prisoners who disclosed where they were living prior to incarceration gave Albuquerque addresses, in the country’s once-a-decade Census they’re counted as living in smaller towns and rural areas. Roughly a quarter of New Mexico’s population lives in Albuquerque, so it’s no surprise to find a prevalence of residents from New Mexico’s largest city in the corrections system.

But corrections data obtained by New Mexico In Depth suggests the city’s voting power is diffused to smaller towns and rural areas where New Mexico’s prisons are, a practice criminal justice reform advocates refer to as “prison gerrymandering.” That’s where prison communities—often rural and, nationally, more white—benefit as prisoners from elsewhere increase their populations without being allowed to vote.

Advocates are pushing New Mexico to end the practice in coming months 88

as the state’s new Citizen Redistricting Committee, and state lawmakers, participate in a once-a-decade redistricting that will shape New Mexico’s political landscape for years to come.

And at least one says the last addresses inmates give corrections officials as they enter prison could achieve that goal. The ideal solution would be for the Department of Corrections to hand over the same records it gave to New Mexico In Depth to the Citizen Redistricting Committee, said Mario Jimenez, campaign director of Common Cause New Mexico.

If the committee were to request those records, the department “would absolutely share that with them,” Corrections spokesman Eric Harrison wrote in an email.

Samantha Osaki, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, said ending the practice of counting prisoners in the areas they’re imprisoned would create a more equitable redistricting process.

“Bernalillo County residents who are already suffering from the loss of parents, friends and neighbors due to mass incarceration then doubly suffer from the loss of political representation,” Osaki said.

New Mexico In Depth obtained the last addresses of 5,082 inmates after filing a records request. The corrections department initially refused to disclose the information but turned the records over after the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office found the department had denied the request improperly.

The department created the list of addresses in mid-July. As of Sept. 20, the state’s inmate population was 5,670. Harrison attributed the gap to the fluctuations in the prison population and that the addresses are self-disclosed at the time of intake, meaning some prisoners did not offer where they lived prior to imprisonment.

The addresses include halfway and transitional living houses and 37 “homeless” entries. And 6% are out-of-state addresses from Arizona, Texas and a few other states.

The data the agency provided came with a caveat. A disclosure attached to the records stated that “due diligence has been applied to assure the accuracy of the report data,” but “due to inconsistencies and mistakes over decades of data entry…it is virtually impossible to conclude that all of these data are entirely correct.”

Data collection has long been an issue in New Mexico. For example, it’s unclear what the exact racial impacts of prison gerrymandering are in New Mexico because the state doesn’t track the race or ethnicity of prisoners. Advocates say that nationally, a significant portion of prisoners from urban areas who augment populations of smaller, more rural areas during the census are people of color.

The data shows the great majority of New Mexico’s prisoner addresses—84%—aren’t from the state’s prison towns; 31% are in Albuquerque, which doesn’t have a prison.

All of New Mexico’s prison towns have grown from an influx of prisoners.

Incarcerated individuals compose substantial portions of local populations in some New Mexico communities with prisons. In one, more than two of every 10 residents are behind bars; and in another, more than one in 10 residents are. But only a handful of people in state prisons disclosed living in these towns before incarceration.

Santa Rosa, host to the Guadalupe County Correctional Center, has a total population of 2,850 and an incarcerated population of 585 as of the 2020 Census, meaning the town is 20.5% incarcerated. According to data from the corrections department, there are five state prison inmates with Santa Rosa addresses.

Clayton, host to Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility, has a total population of 2,643 with 15.5% incarcerated. There are six state prison inmates with Clayton addresses.

Grants, which hosts both Western New Mexico Correctional Facility and Northwest New Mexico Correctional Center, is about 7.7% incarcerated, with 871 inmates between the two prisons. There are 28 inmates incarcerated in state prisons with Grants addresses.

In Hobbs, home to the state’s largest prison, prisoners account for 3% of the population. There are 101 prisoners who listed Hobbs addresses, which is a little less than 10% of the size of the prison population.

A number of other prisons are located just outside city or town limits in unincorporated areas of counties.

In addition to transferring political power away from non-prison towns, prison populations can distort political power within communities if city leaders don’t ensure political maps are drawn in a way that accounts for prisoners who are ineligible to vote. That’s because if prisoners are included in the local population when drawing local political district maps, a smaller group of residents is able to elect local officials in the prison district than in other districts.

The ideal solution, advocates say, would be for the Census Bureau to count inmates as residents of their home communities. In the absence of that change, states can enact laws ending the practice, as a number have done in recent years.

New Mexico doesn’t have a law addressing how to avoid the greater political power prison districts hold. But advocates say the state could avoid concentrating prison populations within a few districts by either counting prisoners at their last known address, spreading the prison population evenly among districts, or not using prisoners in counts for political representation at all.

The newly-formed Citizen Redistricting Committee is in the process of drafting district map proposals, which are due to the Legislature by Oct. 30, and will hold several public meetings in the next month and a half.

State legislators will adopt one of the committee’s proposals or develop new ones.

“The CRC has discussed the concern about prison gerrymandering during a few meetings,” committee Chair Edward Chávez wrote in an email. “We do recognize the issue and believe it is a legitimate concern…

We do not have the last known addresses for individuals prior to their incarceration on Census Day. We have not asked any of the jails or prisons for the data and do not know if they would have or share the data.”

Jimenez, of Common Cause New Mexico, called for an end to prison gerrymandering at the Aug. 10 meeting of the Legislature’s Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee, during which the Citizen Redistricting Committee gave an update.

Prison gerrymandering, Jimenez told the legislative committee, is an “injustice not only to incarcerated people but to all New Mexicans.”

In just its third year, New Mexico United has developed a loyal, low-profile soccer following in the capital

amian Reyes, a United player, is noticeably shorter than the defenders he faces. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in confident speed. Receiving a good look from the open left field, he fakes one defender, then another and chips the ball beyond the keeper’s splayed hands for the team’s first goal.

Reyes leaps gracefully in celebration against the shadows that stretch across the pitch at the Santa Fe Municipal Recreation Sports Complex one Wednesday afternoon.

“Alright, go drink water,” coach Daniel Trejo tells his team. Most of the players trot to the sideline, where their parents sit on blankets with toddlers—the players’ younger siblings.

But Reyes, 10, keeps kicking the ball with his co-captain, Derek. Reyes never misses a day of practice; he’s clear on what lies ahead for his future soccer career.

Without hesitation, Reyes tells SFR he’ll play for the other United team when he gets older.

His favorite player on the United Soccer League team based in Albuquerque is Sergio Rivas. The midfielder, with 21 shots on goal this season, four of them finding the mark, was born in Mexico but grew up in New Mexico.

Reyes’ dreams of making it to the professional level like Rivas got a boost from Santa Fe United Football Club (despite the shared name, there’s no affiliation between the two soccer teams). The youth team helps get kids onto the pitch who otherwise might not have a chance to participate in prohibitively expensive tournaments—a longstanding, well-known barrier to soccer that’s been a hallmark of private clubs in Santa Fe and statewide.

Reyes, his family and scores of other Santa Fe-based United supporters reveal that in the capital, there’s a wellspring of pride and devotion to New Mexico’s first professional soccer team.

Talking to any New Mexico United supporter, whether it’s in the parking lot before a game or on fields south of Santa Fe, passion for the three-year old team is evident.

Some say it’s the universal love for soccer, often referred to as the world’s game.

Others point to United’s bold-colored, progressive, artsy merchandising schemes.

Whatever the source, the popularity of New Mexico’s first truly successful professional sports team is impossible to ignore.

The jubilance in the team’s host city is obvious in bars or at tailgates, but this obsession has taken root outside New Mexico’s primary population center, too.

Here, we just get to say we’re all United, we’re all part of the same thing.

As long as you come with your most authentic self, it’s for you. I think it’s that collective belief.

“It was never about soccer, it was just about bringing the community together and that was always important to me. So that’s what we led with; we let people know it’s for everybody,” Trevisani tells SFR outside the stadium, where his team is about to do battle with Salt Lake City’s Real Monarchs.

The tailgate is in full swing, and Trevisani is interrupted by a young fan with a popsicle-stained mouth and tongue.

“Can you tell Daniel Bruce my birthday is on May 29th, ‘cause his is on May 13th,” the boy demands.

Trevisani promises to share the information with Bruce, United’s 25-year-old midfielder from England. The kid hustles back to his pickup game in a makeshift pitch set up on the grass across Avenida Cesar Chavez from Isotopes Park.

New Mexico United played its first game against the Fresno Football Club in March 2019. In the brief time since, supporter clubs have sprouted around the state. The largest and most vocal, the Curse, is based in Albuquerque. The group’s name comes from territorial governor Lew Wallace’s dispirited assessment of the state: “All calculations based on our experiences elsewhere fail in New Mexico.”

And for fans up in Santa Fe, there are the 7K Ultras, a rag-tag crew that lacks “card carrying” members. After extensive snooping around social media, watch parties and an in-person match, SFR confirms the group doesn’t maintain fixed leadership or a religious following.

Rather, United fans in the capital city who spoke with SFR prefer to exercise their soccer enthusiasm through a variety of activities and groups. Yet everyone who claimed the badge of “supporter” clearly lives daily with the spirit of “Somos Unidos.”

That was the goal for Peter Trevisani, who was acutely aware of New Mexico’s less than impressive record with professional sports. But the Santa Fe resident and owner of New Mexico United says getting the state into the pros wasn’t his primary motivation for starting the team.

Amongst the art galleries, breweries and boutique shops, a small and mighty contingent of United supporters has emerged in Santa Fe. What this loose collection of fans lacks in organized structure, it makes up for in unassuming enthusiasm.

that there’s a difference between United fans from Santa Fe, Albuquerque or any other supporter pockets around the state.

“Here, we just get to say we’re all United, we’re all part of the same thing. As long as you come with your most authentic self, it’s for you. I think it’s that collective belief.”

United supporters and Trevisani hope to translate that unified passion into collective action this November by building a stadium for the team. The proposed publicly-owned stadium has a $50 million price tag, financed by a tax revenue bond measure, which Albuquerque voters will decide on come Nov. 2.

Social media buzzes with opponents and supporters arguing about the stadium idea.

Some critics say the money would be better spent on more cops and other crime-fighting strategies in a city with spiking rates of violence, while advocates of the stadium point to the team’s immense popularity— the fresh arena would provide a morale boost to a struggling Albuquerque.

United has certainly cultivated a following: The merchandise is ubiquitous in Albuquerque and beyond, and the team draws a crowd every time it turns out to play.

David Carl, a spokesman for United, says the team has led the league in attendance. USL Championship, a Division II professional soccer league, hosts 31 teams across the country. In 2019, an average of 12,693 fans attended each United game, almost 2,000 more supporters than the team with the second highest season average.

and some fans still nervous to join large crowds, only the Louisville City FC in Kentucky has a higher attendance average than United.

For Trevisani, all those ticket sales allow for more than just a healthy bottom line. He points to the Somos Unidos Foundation, which launched during the pandemic last year and runs programs to support schools, artists and athletes around the state.

Through funding from the foundation, United started a free soccer academy for youth players in the state—it’s one of only three academies in the country where every player receives a full scholarship, says Carl.

Klaus Voigtlander moved to New Mexico over two decades ago from Germany, where he watched football—he clarifies, “American football,” which Voigtlander finds too aggressive—because there wasn’t a local soccer team that won his heart.

But United’s formation gave Voigtlander a taste of something he’d missed.”I feel like I’m back home, somewhere in Europe,” he tells SFR moments after Amando Moreno scores United’s first goal against Real SLC during a recent match. Voigtlander sports a Meow Wolf-emblazoned jersey and a yellow flag for a cape.

When he heard about where United would play, Voigtlander was skeptical: “In The Lab? In a [triple-A] baseball stadium?”

The team’s quick rise to popularity also came as a surprise to the German national.

“Americans want to watch American football and baseball and basketball, but not soccer,” he says. “I thought I was by myself.”

He wasn’t.

Enjoying a pretzel and a beer, Voigtlander, a long-time Santa Fe resident, speaks of the slow but consistent growth of interest in soccer over recent years, noting the US women’s team that has dominated the world stage.

Voigtlander contends soccer in New Mexico will continue to expand and, hopefully, he says, draw families away from the violent, concussion-inducing sport of American football.

“If you have a daughter or son, it doesn’t matter,” he says of soccer’s inclusivity.

“They want to play? They can.”

Voigtlander bemoans the commercialization of European soccer teams, which has led to, among other things, soaring ticket prices. He can watch United for $25; back home, attending a match would run almost $150—for that price he could attend six United games.

He contrasts the elitist vibe of European soccer against United’s accessibility.

Voigtlander says he would like to see United at the top level of professional soccer in the US, Major League Soccer, but the team’s current status has its benefits. “This is beautiful, for us, for our community,” he

says looking out over the crowd of families and friends.

Tom Ludzia didn’t anticipate becoming a United fan.

His preferred sport, ice hockey, isn’t popular in the sunny state of New Mexico, and he didn’t follow soccer before his first game. He didn’t even expect to attend after waking up at 4:30 am one day to start brewing beer at Second Street Brewery. But his friends cajoled him into joining them for a game after his long shift.

It only took one, says Ludzia, dressed in work overalls and sipping on his brewery’s award-winning Oktoberfest on a Thursday afternoon.

“The last time I felt that type of energy was 1994, in Madison Square Garden when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup,” Ludzia tells SFR, burnishing his hockey-fan cred by evoking an event that’s near religious

for many New Yorkers. “The excitement, I hadn’t felt that in ages. After that we were committed, so we got tickets on the way home for the next match.”

Ludzia has the same relaxed attitude the next time SFR runs into him at the tailgate, where he’s helped lubricate a group of United supporters with 10 gallons of Second Street beer. Since that first season, Ludzia has become tightly entwined in the United supporters network, serving these days as co-chair of community outreach for the Curse.

The supporters club maintains no official connection with United, but their good work is in honor of the team’s name.

Ludzia leveraged his roles with the Curse and Second Street to help low-income families in Albuquerque with basic laundry services. They’ve organized with the nonprofit Laundry Project, to raise money through the sale of Beyond the Pitch, a limited-release session India pale ale from Second Street that embodies the supporters’ spirit.

Ludzia says he took on the community outreach role to help spread the good work of the Curse beyond Albuquerque.

The group has donated to Santa Fe Public Schools’ Adelante Program, which helps unhoused youth, and the food bank Casa de Peregrinos in Las Cruces.

“We’re grateful that we have a professional team; we’re grateful to have a team that cares about New Mexico,” Ludzia tells SFR. “I mean it’s a win-win, and if they don’t make the playoffs this year, so be it, we’ll come back louder and better next year.”

In its first two years, United made deep playoff runs, meaning even more fall evenings for fans from around the state to holler in The Lab. Ludzia’s mild concern about this year’s prospects appear prophetic: New Mexico’s team record this year isn’t as impressive as years past.

With eight games still to play—including one tonight against Rio Grande Valley FC—

NM UNITED SEASON RECORD and a 8-8-7 record, it isn’t likely to play past the regular season.

Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Rivas played for Seattle University after growing up in Albuquerque and attending Cibola High School. After graduating, Rivas signed with the MLS San Jose Earthquakes in 2019. Rivas started with United at the beginning of the 2021 season, marking a return to his home community.

Hailing from Warrington, England, Bruce signed with New Mexico United after playing for University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has a total of four career goals with United. This is the 25-year old’s third season with the team.

Sandoval is an Albuquerque native and spent the majority of this college career at the University of New Mexico. He played for a number of professional teams, Real Salt Lake, San Francisco Deltas, Atlanta United 2, before signing with New Mexico United in 2019.

When SFR catches up with Ashley Young and her family in section 120, row B, they’ve been in their seats for almost an hour already and the whistle marking United’s face off against the Utah team hasn’t blown.

The self-labeled “super fans” have season tickets in seats adjacent to the Curse’s area (section 118). “I couldn’t sit in the supporter’s section because I would have too much worry about not knowing where my seat was,” Young says.

The legendary rowdiness in Sections 116 and 118—on full display again during SFR’s visit to the pitch—can be immensely fun, if a little distracting from the game, Young tells SFR. Her daughter, Callan Cox, a junior on the Santa Fe High School soccer team, also prefers the “supporter-adjacent” section because she wants an unobstructed view of the match. Right of the north goal and only a few feet from the corner flag, their second row seats offer just that.

Before the game starts, with one of the best vantages in the stadium, Young tells SFR: “If there’s corner kicks, we’ll be on TV.” When she’s not managing the electronic health records system for La Familia Medical Center, Young pours her energy into supporting Santa Fe High’s soccer team. As a team parent, Young has worked to make the school group accessible and memorable for each athlete.

Unlike private clubs—those same expensive youth teams that led to the formation of the Santa Fe United—Young has helped to make sure soccer is free for anyone who wants to play.

“I really just want them to know that, regardless of which roster they were put on, JV or varsity, that they’re all one team, and that everything we do is for all of them,” Young says.

The Santa Fe High Demons don’t have to pay a dime for the swag or trips, including the upcoming Oct. 9 United game against Rio Grande Valley FC Young has planned as a team field trip of sorts.

For Santa Fe United, the club featuring young Reyes, the team hopes to also take a trip to Albuquerque to watch the state’s pros in action—and with enough practice, maybe audition for the squad one day.

“Our goal is for one day, hopefully, these kids with our help, and the help in the community and their donations, they’ll be able to at least go and try out for New Mexico

United,” Omar Reyes, the father of the young Santa Fe player, tells SFR. Among the reasons they named the Santa Fe team United: community support for the youth club is so strong.

“Our kids are considered low-income for the people here in Santa Fe, so it feels like a lot of people don’t really care about what they think,” Reyes says. “Our kids love soccer, our kids love United just as much as everybody else and it’s just they don’t get the opportunity to express themselves.”

Reyes understands how impactful United’s momentum has been for the state.

Since the team’s first season in 2019, the Reyeses have become big fans.

“If you’re from Santa Fe, it’s a passion to be from Santa Fe. If you’re from Albuquerque, it’s a passion to be from Albuquerque,” Reyes tells SFR as throngs of young players clad in yellow and blue jerseys shout and kick soccer balls. “For us to like soccer, that’s our passion, that’s our life. For us that’s like going to church. And if New Mexico United is in Albuquerque, it’s an hour drive, so that’s like going to church for me personally.”

Back in The Lab, the older United players, sporting their black Meow Wolf kit, warm up on the pitch. Supporters who have traveled from all corners of the state have come out to be in community with each other.

“There really isn’t a true Santa Fe contingent,” Young says.”And maybe there doesn’t need to be, because there’s already this huge organized group.”

She’s referring to the Curse, highlighting the Albuquerque-based group’s inclusivity and eagerness to engage with supporters all over the state.

For Young, there’s a secondary motivation behind hauling the Demons to The Lab: “Obviously by taking them to a United game, I am trying to recruit more” Santa Fe supporters.

Young and Ludzia, the Second Street brewer, both mention that Santa Fe fans have taken part in a number of supporter activities led by the Curse, like painting banners for each of the United players and greeting the team at the airport when they return from away games.

Ludzia agrees with Reyes—he hasn’t seen much distinction yet between fans in the two cities.

“As far as the passion for the club, we got a longer drive, that’s the difference,” Ludzia says, back at the brewery off Second Street in advance of an upcoming home game that weekend. “And yet, depending on the day, you know how Albuquerque is: To get to the other side of Albuquerque it might take them just as long as it takes us to get home with no traffic.”

Preparing this factory is the most expensive construc�on project in the history of New Mexico, rivalling construc�on of all the state’s interstate highways put together.

This gigan�c undertaking already employs more than 2,000 people full-�me, plus hundreds of subcontract workers. When and if it starts, pit produc�on would be a 24/7 endeavor, because the LANL facili�es are so crowded. LANL wants to hire another 2,000 pit produc�on workers for round-the-clock opera�ons.

Many safety issues remain unresolved. Also, shipping the large quan��es of nuclear waste produced during produc�on will take precedence over the removal of LANL’s extensive Cold War wastes. As a result, cleanup may never happen.

despite climate collapse, crying social and economic needs performance rela�ve to other states, many people in New Mexico s�ll “look to the labs” for economic salva�on. Besides permanent pollu�on and more than 1,600 federally-documented occupa�onal deaths, what does the region have to show for all the money and talent poured into LANL? Labor markets are distorted as LANL absorbs local talent. Housing markets are likewise bid up. And scarce resources such as water and road capacity are consumed.

Taxpayers in LANL bedroom communi�es pay for public services and educa�on for LANL commuters and their families, o�en with net nega�ve fiscal impacts.

Over its history LANL has spent $130 billion in northern New Mexico, a vast sum anywhere but especially here. Yet LANL has generated neither shared prosperity nor social development. A few have benefited economically, but most have not. As a result, LANL drives regional inequality, with devasta�ng Each LANL bomb core social, economic, and poli�cal impacts.

Perhaps worst of all, poli�cal leaders come to focus and would cost $50 million, depend on LANL and its wealthy employees – or else fear enough for 1,000 its power, exerted indirectly through poli�cal par�es and teachers – or thousands organiza�ons. LANL suborns the a�en�on and loyalty of our poli�cal and civic leadership and provides false, self-serving answers to the economic, environmental and social problems we face.

Instead of coming together to truly grapple with these problems, our leaders talk about LANL “jobs”, a narra�ve that centers our a�en�on on LANL – not where it belongs, in our communi�es.

Our state & country desperately need wholesome priorities, not an arms race How can we build strong, resilient communi�es with priori�es such as these? How can we address the existen�al crisis of climate change? How can we provide a good educa�on for all our children, and support for our elderly? How can we provide real voca�ons, with real meaning, for the rising genera�on?

More war, and more prepara�ons for nuclear war, are the opposite of any answer.

The scale of these wrong-headed investments corrupts our poli�cians, drains our treasury, and degrades our morality, dragging down our city, our state, our country, and our world – without even considering the rising risk of nuclear war.

Runaway nuclear weapons spending is just part of this year’s $934 billion ($7,738 per household) bill for U.S. “defense” overall, more than half of all congressional appropria�ons. U.S. military spending exceeds the combined total military spending of all the other countries in the world, save three. The U.S. spends more on just nuclear weapons than the en�re defense budgets of all but nine countries.

NNSA needs silence and acquiescence in order to con�nue this reckless folly. The last thing LANL and NNSA want is to have to jus�fy their plans in public.

Meanwhile LANL hopes to subordinate our educa�onal ins�tu�ons to their needs, so our children can enter their “pipeline” of plutonium workers to be cannon fodder for dreams of world domina�on.

What can be done, and how you can help LANL’s semi-secret plans are unclear even to LANL. And they are expanding. Two additional billion-dollar nuclear facili�es are now planned. Once produc�on is underway, a large new plutonium facility will also be needed.

According to LANL, 2,000 to 3,000 workers must soon be brought to the site daily in buses because LANL has outgrown local road capaci�es. Meanwhile LANL is nego�a�ng with the Pueblos to build trailer parks for its an�cipated army of construc�on workers.

Our Senators, Congresswoman Fernandez, and our Governor all support LANL’s new mission without reserva�on, without even knowing what it entails. So far, these poli�cians oppose transparency and environmental analyses. We have requested their help many �mes. Don’t bother asking − it only encourages their disdain.

Given the widespread lack of knowledge we are organizing a public informa�onal and planning mee�ng, to which our congressional delega�on, Governor, and local leaders will be invited. Further ac�on will be necessary, ideally coupled with a rising �de of impa�ence rela�ve to our climate and social emergencies.

Manufacturing plutonium nuclear weapons cores takes northern New Mexico in a dark direc�on, foreclosing be�er choices. We need a sustainable, just society that is working to address climate collapse and other crises straight on, not the moral and fiscal black hole of a new Cold War.

New media artists Robert Campbell and David Stout both come from a filmmaking background, with Stout having some experience as a sonic artist. Here they bring life to lines, constructing an array of sharp imagery like you’re looking at the world from afar or through a microscope. You’ll maybe see architecture or natural landscapes within these patterns. Or heck, maybe something more. Love in the Time of Climate Change One couple’s struggle for answers and a way out of IKEA Daunting themes like parenthood and climate change expand throughout the play Lungs by Duncan Macmillan. Such common struggles for younger generations juxtapose the bare stage at the New Mexico Actors Lab, where Nicholas Ballas intends for audiences to embrace them in the new local production of Lungs—a bold move for his debut as the sole artistic director of the New Mexico Actors Lab. “What I really believe about this show more than anything else is it’s a love story at its core,” Ballas tells SFR. “I want the audience to vicariously experience these people falling in love, to experience the bumps in the road they go through and to ultimately come out the other end with them and to be cheering them on all the way.”

Written in 2011 and winner of the 2012 Best New Play Off West-End award, Lungs is darkly funny and playfully unfiltered throughout. The only characters, M and W (Geoffrey Pomeroy and Joey Beth Gilbert), contemplate their future as a couple, but also their responsibilities in a changing world. (505) 473-0743). It’s a real doozy, too, as Sacramento-based MC and lyricist Mr. P Chill returns to New Mexico once again with enlightened takes, sick beats and a little bit of that ACAB action layered within his combination old-school/new-school sounds.

Lending support are iconic locals like MC Slader, O.G. Willikers and DJ D-Monic, all of whom know a little something about the boom-bap, too. It’s been about four years since we last checked in with P Chill, so we figured the pandemic times might have armed him with a thought or two when it comes to answering questions. (Alex De Vore) As a socially-conscious rapper—and given the shape of the world—do you find yourself having maybe too much inspiration/material at this point?

Yes and no. There is definitely no shortage of things to talk about in the music, that’s for absolute certain. Sometimes I find it overwhelming, because while I’m a socially-conscious rapper, I like to write things from a personal standpoint that don’t reflect society’s woes, and sometimes when I’m trying to write that personal stuff, the social stuff comes out instead. It does get in the way a little bit. My last album, LIFE, or Living in Fragile Environments, was supposed to be personal stories—LIFE was an acronym for ‘love in full effect,’ and a third of the way through the album it started becoming something else.

I’d been dealing with anxiety and depression, though, especially last year during the pandemic. My anxiety and mental health came into the forefront, and about this time last year, I feel like I had a complete breakdown and I had a threeweek long anxiety attack. I get little ones all the time, but this was some whole new shit. I lost my mom in 2019, and I’m still trying to write something in memory of her, and it was one of the things I was going to put out there, but never got around to

finishing. Music...It’s like self-medicating, but in a really healthy way, although I spent a good portion of 2020 smoking all the weed I could get my hands on and drinking all the beer, and I know I’m not the only one.

As for the world, being socially conscious, in my experience, things that lean to the right lean against people of color. We cannot forget I’m a white rapper, and we cannot forget that hip-hop culture was created by people of color in New York. Anybody who won’t give it the respect is…I’m a guest in hip-hop’s house.

I don’t own anything here. But I’m thankful for it. You’ve gotta respect the elders. The culture. I’ve been given a platform, the mic’s in my hands, and if I were to go out there and do only songs that make me feel good, that’d be terrible. The hip-hop that has inspired me since I was young is socially conscious. Heroes like Chuck D who put the message first.

You usually tour often. Has not being able to do that impacted how you create?

I felt like I spent a lot more time focusing on creating. I had the time, and I wasn’t distracted. I was able to give my last album my undivided attention, which I think really helped. I did my song about mental health, which was the last one I wrote before COVID, it’s called ‘Morning Coffee.’ The next one I wrote was actually a song with Doodlebug from Digable Planets called ‘Social Distancing,’ and we just dead-on hit that. I did a song called ‘Millions of Militants’ about everything from the far right, the Proud Boys, Fox News, Trump.

That song, it was wild—for the first time I was getting anxiety about putting something out. I was like, ‘I’m gonna say it, I’m going to do it, but what’s going to happen?’

I also had money set aside to tour, a bunch of stuff lined up that went away, and that’s when I ordered 600 masks that said ‘COVID Sucks,’—and that was at a time when people had a hard time getting masks—and I just gave them away. Usually my music is how I try to address problems, but when I couldn’t do that, couldn’t leave the house and hadn’t quite realized streaming was a solution, I just wanted to fill those voids with other ways I could make a positive difference.

It seems like you make a point to perform in New Mexico any chance you get, huh?

Years ago, I fell in love with New Mexico. The people there are absolutely wonderful. When you’re on the road, you miss your fam and friends and your cat, but you have people you’ve built bonds with over the years and it makes it a little easier. In Madrid especially. I’ve told my wife that it’s on the list for places we could retire. I give myself a little extra time always to talk to everyone I know in that town.

Whoa, ‘murder folk’ is a great name for a genre! AJJ definitely has a few murder folk tunes. I’ll adopt a persona from time to time.

Sparingly. A lot of the songs are direct commentary, but a lot of them are from the subconscious as well.

Presumably, AJJ doesn’t live fulltime in B&W, but they do slay.

ormerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad, Phoenix, Arizona’s AJJ rose to prominence shortly after their 2004 formation and the subsequent release of 2005’s Candy, Cigarettes & Cap Guns. At the time, other folk punk heroes like Johnny Hobo & the Freight Trains and Kimya Dawson helped take the genre to new heights alongside AJJ. Since then, the band’s sound has evolved, as has its roster of killer musicians, but founding members Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty have always stayed true to the punk roots and values established in the band’s early days with thrashing melodies, introspective lyrics and a strong bent toward political and social commentary.

In the aforementioned early days, the band grew to popularity with its catchy style and thoughtful lyricism (“I’ve got an angry heart filled with cancers and poppy tarts/If this is how you folks make art, it’s fucking depressing,” from the 2007 song “Brave as a Noun” off People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World, for example), but the 2011 release of the enduringly popular Knife Man on legendary Bay Area indie label Asian Man Records

leads us to AJJ’s current place in the pantheon of acoustic punk nerds. It’s a good album for newcomers, too, especially during a pandemic; to wit—when Bonnette sings on “Hate, Rain On Me” from Knife Man: “I wanna put on my sweatpants/You know I’m trying to quit/I want to give a shit again.”

For those newcomers, the elder punk statesmen, for all the tranqs, lobos, zipheads and even just Santa Feans in the know, the Knife Man 10 Year Anniversary Tour comes to Meow Wolf on Sept. 29. As a longtime AJJ fan who counts Knife Man among my favorite records, I got a chance to speak with singer-songwriter and frontman Bonnette about the 10-year milestone, pandemic shows, songwriting and mental health.

Happy 10 year anniversary, Knife Man! SFR: Knife Man is an album that clearly deals with themes of mental illness, loneliness and isolation. What do you think of the current discourse about mental health, especially during and on the ‘tail end’ of the pandemic?

Sean Bonnette: In regards to the current mental health discourse, what I’m seeing lately is a wider understanding of the effects of—and the definition of—trauma; both to the individual and across generations and communities. At the same time, I am also

seeing a rift in how we as a society process massive, looming trauma. I think the themes from Knife Man you identified will always be relevant, sadly. Wah-wah.

I enjoyed many of your quick Instagram Live sessions during the pandemic. Is that something you only started doing during COVID-19? Are those IG Live sets something you might continue offtour, or do you think they had their time and are done now that live shows are coming back?

I loved doing those. They gave me something to do during a very uncertain time. We had started toying with livestreams a little bit before the pandemic, and I think we will continue doing them sporadically. The lockdown was a very interesting time for entertainment. It leveled the playing field, in a sense. Saturday Night Live was really weird for a couple weeks. I look forward to playing more outdoor shows as weather permits.

In some of your songs that deal with darker subject matter, it almost feels as if a persona, or a different side of you, is coming out. Do you have a songwriting persona that you adopt, or do you think it’s pretty much all you, all the time depending on what you are dealing

What kinds of things do you pull your inspiration from, besides other music?

What is your process when it comes to writing? Do you ever have a concept for albums?

We’re on tour with two of them right now!

Xiu Xiu and Emperor X are inspiring and influential. Xiu Xiu’s vulnerability and honesty is heroic. Emperor X is pure chaos magic. I really love the cross-pollination of inspiration and influence across mediums.

I love putting pieces of films in my songs.

Sometimes a piece of art will grab me in just the right way and I’ll have to process it into music. I usually write melody and lyrics together first, usually from a tune I’ll get stuck in my head. I write songs compulsively, but when I start to notice recurring themes, I’ll follow those threads and it makes writing the album easier.

What’s your favorite song to perform live? What’s your favorite city you have played?

I love to try out new songs live, helps me finish ‘em! Favorite city? That is a big question. Los Angeles? Budapest? Berlin?

Melbourne? Santa Fe? Home? My favorite city to play is the city I’ve never played before. To quote Dewey Cox, ‘It’s a beautiful ride.’

If you weren’t living the dream, playing punk music and touring the world, what do you think you would be doing? What was your childhood dream job?

I bet I’d be a therapist. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a filmmaker, but I don’t think I’d be good at it. Gotta be really organized to make movies.

“Joe is every man. He is you. He is me— the guy and gal next door and all female renditions of the name,” Roland Richter, who operates Joe’s Dining with his wife Sheila, tells SFR. “Joe is really all of us.”

That’s right—the famous Joe is nothing more than a mythical figure, that spirit of heartfelt dining that we all carry with us. Or something like that. If you can move past your relief or disappointment and pity for the staffers who likely have to answer this question multiple times a day, you’ll easily see why Joe’s Dining, now in its 19th year, has become one of those it’s-been-thereforever places.

Born in Essen, Germany, Richter left his home country to work in food in the United Kingdom, then the Canadian restaurant sphere and down south through the United States, eventually to Santa Fe, where he and his wife opened the DeVargas Center’s iconic Pizza Etc. There, they built up a loyal following—until they noticed a larger economic shift at play.

Pizza Etc. “was very successful, but we noticed many of our clients were starting to move to the Southside of town,” he explains, noting the ever-growing cost of living in Santa Fe. “Our market was moving down there, so we decided it was time to try that part of town out.”

Since 2002, they’ve moved on from Pizza Etc. (though the Araiza family who owns it today still tosses up a pretty sweet pie), but Joe’s Dining hasn’t had much of a reason to slow down, even through two major recessions that shut so many restaurants’ doors. Richter cites his European background as a partial reason for the success—not in a superiority

sense, but rather due to early lessons in clean and fresh foods.

“My parents always cooked at home. We rarely ate out. I was lucky to go into work in a very good hotel, where I saw how everything came in fresh, from the carcasses to the vegetables; nothing was frozen back in the ’70s, and this is when the food scene started changing a lot,” he says. “The chain restaurants really came out, looking for methods of consolidating and simplifying. Frozen products became the rage. I never worked in places like that and never liked that system.

I stayed away. I don’t like it when they start taking things out of products and try to stitch it back together again.”

When a restaurant owner talks about how their regular customers are oh-so-regular, one might be tempted to roll their eyes. Spend an hour in Joe’s Dining, though, and you’ll know Richter appreciates the loyalty at work. The staffer answering the phone knows every other caller and converses in a jovial manner, saying, “We were expecting a call from you!” or “How are things going? We miss seeing you!”

Customers enter and prove themselves to be on a first-name basis with

a number of the staff. Three groups exit with a “See you next week!”

Even the pamphlets adorning every table feel like talk between old friends. Info within these pamphlets isn’t marketing, rather thoughts from the crew: a joke they thought was funny; the occasional talk about spiritual re-awakening; something decrying Bill Gates’ claims about a future of synthetic beef; and an appeal to customers

to stop fearing healthy fats (“I love you, but please stop it,” it reads). There’s even a shoutout to all the local farmers, ranchers and orgs who stock up their supplies.

Despite the name, Joe’s Dining isn’t the kind of small town joint where The New York Times goes to discover why Hillary Clinton lost—you won’t get stuffed to oblivion. That’s not to say there’s no possibilities for eating until unfamiliar pains emerge, but there’s an obvious focus on quality and presentation

over portion sizes here—which themselves aren’t lacking in generosity.

“To do something well, you have to concentrate on it very well,” Richter explains.

“Hollandaise sauce is something we’re known for in our Benedict variations, those are very very big sellers for us.”

Richter fails to mention his Benedict variations might sell simply because they are incredibly good. The hollandaise sauce atop their near-perfect eggs Benedict ($16) ranks as some of the best I’ve had in town, and the in-house smoked salmon ($16) may look meek, yet is the star of the show. Topped with red onions and capers and thinly sliced atop the expertly crisped potato latkes ($8), the salmon will remind you of the difference good food makes. And though more than a few restaurants preach this commitment to quality, I can safely say Joe’s ranks as one of the few places in Santa Fe where I’m truly able to taste the difference.

Hollandaise not your thing? That’s sacrilege, but we’ll forgive you for now— Joe’s egg scramble ($12), the classic four-stack buttermilk pancakes ($8), breakfast enchiladas ($12) or one of the three omelette varieties ($13; ranging from a pepper-Western style to a garden variety style with local seasonal vegetables) are all popular options, according to Richter. And before you all freak out, yes, there’s a smothered breakfast burrito ($11) for the traditional brunchers. Throw in a mimosa ($8) and you may feel you’ve made it, for an hour, anyways.

It’s hard to recommend Richter’s spot enough, actually. “See you next week!” could easily be the company motto with the inevitable printing on mugs and shirts. If the mantra doesn’t leave your lips on the way out the door, the words will probably be dancing in your mind. Even as a once-in-a-while trip, you’ll probably want to end up as a Joe’s Dining regular. Maybe someday.

Kicking it old-school

When a young San Francisco journalist named Annabelle Angel (Scout Taylor-Compton) shows up in the Arizona town of Apache Junction circa 1881, she’s got everything to prove and a rigorous and hard US Army captain (Trace Adkins) who seemingly wants to stop her from doing so. Annabelle works for Hearst, y’all, and she volunteered to hit the Wild West to document the lives of bounty hunters, the nearby Army folks, the Natives in the area and so forth, but when she unwittingly gets swept up in the world of one Jericho Ford (Stuart Townsend) and his trusty best pal Wasco (Ricky Lee Regan, whom SFR interviewed recently; 3 Questions, Sept. 1), telling the story becomes something else entirely.

Bounty hunters, soldiers and bandit gangs come together to take our heroine down—as does a nefarious gunslinger by the name of Oslo Pike (Ed Morrone)—but with Ford and Wasco keeping that chivalry dream alive, you can bet your 10-gallon hat there’s gonna be shootouts and standoffs and stuff.

Director/writer Justin Lee (Final Kill) comes out swinging with his ode to the classic Western.

Apache Junction looks and feels contemporary in its cinematography and pacing, but story-wise, character-wise, sense-of-place-wise, Lee clearly did his

I Carry You With Me offers something akin to perfection before its sense of self-importance ventures too far. Even still, prepare for its better elements to sweep you away even when it might ultimately leave you adrift.

In the early 1990s, Iván (a wonderful Armando Espitia) isn’t having much luck on his path to becoming a chef and Puebla, Mexico, isn’t offering much. All the while, he’s trying to support his young son amidst his poverty—but, as any queer drama requires, things begin to change when he meets Gerardo (Christian Vázquez) and the two fall into a loving but hushed relationship. Circumstances devolve until Iván is forced to immigrate illegally to the United States for a chance at giving his son a better economic footing.

The narrative storytelling in I Carry You With Me is a knock-out. Still, it suffers from a glaring creative misdirection—blending the wonderful narrative with documentary, focusing on the present day lives of the men who’ve inspired the film.

Director Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp) proves herself to be a hell of a filmmaker, but she can’t seem to separate entirely from her documentarian background, even when the project begs for it.

homework on the Golden Age of Hollywood. To wit: Townsend’s loner-with-a-gun thing hits all the right beats, particularly in his sense of right and wrong (find any essays on the hero’s journey and/or lightversus-dark), but with a sort of effortless charm that recalls the genre’s greats; Thomas Jane is pitch-perfect as the saloon owner.

By comparison, Regan’s Native sidekick role comes correct with a dose of compassion and humanity; perhaps even representing the last good bit of Ford’s soul if we wanna get philosophical here.

Sadly, though, like most Native characters in film, Regan doesn’t get enough to do and certainly not enough dialogue—a pity given his pedigree with Oklahoma’s American Indian Theater Company.

Still, he strikes a satisfying balance between compassion and badassery. Same goes for Mary (Danielle Gross), an enigmatic citizen of Apache

I Carry You With Me began as a doc before it evolved into a narrative, according to Ewing, but its genre-blending yanks the rug out from under the viewer (the entire third act transitions into documentary), shattering the illusion so well built for us. Even if these sections are well-crafted, it’s harder to swallow because Ewing’s creative choices are otherwise solid. She shoots the film tightly, having her actors dominate the frame and sacrificing dialogue for subtle looks and glances. It is tense, funny and often affecting, even if its plot beats are familiar.

I wish we got a complete film rather than two separate works stitched together—at least its narrative elements are worthy of celebration.

Clint Eastwood returns to the director’s chair for the first time since 2019’s Richard Jewell with Cry Macho, a filmed-in-New Mexico sort of neo-Western in which Eastwood also stars and about which the best one can say is that it probably won’t be the worst thing to happen to someone this week.

Junction who sees the looming tide of proper civilization as a sad inevitability. Gross’ take on heartache over something she hasn’t quite lost yet is one of the more compelling pieces of the puzzle, though it does overshadow Taylor-Compton’s wide-eyed newcomer.

Still, when the dynamite’s tossed and the explosions punctuate the flying bullets, Apache Junction works. Seems like every few years we get a decent Western making the rounds, and this is that, even if a little more character development would have worked wonders. Can’t really beat those sunsets and landscapes, though.

Eastwood is Mike Milo, a former ranch hand/ cowboy/rodeo star who, we learn, broke his back in a bucking bronco accident some years earlier, took up with pills and booze and is now bumming out his boss Howard (Dwight Yoakam) real hard.

No shit on the elderly here, but it’s almost funny that Eastwood’s Milo is fired from cowboy-ing for being chronically late rather than objectively ancient, but we go with it because Eastwood was once a badass.

That suspension of disbelief becomes harder, of course, when Milo’s former boss hires him to head into Mexico to find said boss’s teenaged son Rafo, who is apparently being abused by his mother Leta (Fernanda Urrejola) in ways not worth defining to the audience. Milo reluctantly agrees and sets off on the odyssey with his cowboy hat shining and his willingness to sleep out in the open on full display. Once in Mexico, Milo meets and then runs afoul of the young boy (a painfully wooden Eduardo Minnett) with very little difficulty; the scene wherein his unstable yet powerful mother demands sex from Eastwood just feels silly, though.

Rafo and Milo flee to trek across Mexico with Leta’s never-explained henchman not far behind.

Together, our heroes meet a colorful cast of crooked cops, restauranteurs with hearts of gold, friendly and not-so-friendly folks and, like, cockfighting promoters and stuff. Minnett struggles to find

balance playing against Eastwood’s gravitas while Eastwood, it seems, landed on playing his cowboy as befuddled most of the time, though he does somehow get the better of gun-toting goons and the authorities again and again.

And so it goes for what feels like too long (but isn’t; Cry Macho doesn’t even run two hours), and with only the semblance of backstory for basically every character, any attachments we might have formed don’t come. Is it on the nose for someone like Eastwood to play some old guy whose glory days seem long behind him? Maybe so, but it’s even more exhausting to watch over-the-top performances from basically every other actor (though we’ll give a shoutout to Santa Fean Pablo Paz for the back of his head’s appearance as some cop). Maybe Eastwood’s subdued appearance spurred them to try harder? And why would you bring in someone like Yoakam, who has shown he has chops, to say three things and then disappear?

The answer ultimately doesn’t matter, but it feels sad—and not in that we all age and it’s hard way, more in how Cry Macho’s little universe simply isn’t fleshed out enough. Because of that, it feels like half a movie that could have been something, and one that relies heavily on the star power of a once glorious cinema titan. Stream this one on HBO Max if you have it, but don’t hit the theater.
